While Tyran Wishart has been making headlines for his versatility and hard-working nature on the field
it’s been his efforts off the field that has set him up for greater success in the years to come
Despite relishing the opportunity to soak in the bright lights of the NRL stage
Wishart hasn’t forgotten the importance of life outside the rugby league arena
having completed a Bachelor of Construction Management and Property while coming through the rugby league ranks
he still has his sights set on finishing the Carpentry apprenticeship that saw him juggle a trade
study and rugby league earlier in his career
“Rugby league is only a short part of your life so if you're lucky enough to play for 10 years
that's a pretty good rugby league career but you're probably going to be done by at the latest mid 30s,” Wishart said
Having taken out the ‘Iron Bar’ award during the Club’s notorious IDQ pre-season camp
Wishart’s strong work ethic was demonstrated early on in his career
having juggled rugby league commitments with not only study but full-time work as well
"There was one or two years where I was working full-time in construction and that's when I started my carpentry apprenticeship and I loved it,” Wishart said
“I thought it was a good way to approach it as I’d done the theory during my degree but this was a good way to learn practically as well,” he said
“I was doing footy part-time in the Under 20s and I didn't get a full-time contract until I was 21
so I had a few years to focus on that and I even did a couple of years of full-time Uni,” he said
“It overlapped for a year which was a busy year because I was doing NSW Cup at the same time which just meant I was training in the afternoon’s to work my way through it.”
The 24-year-old said he even found having something to focus on outside of footy played a key role in getting the best out of himself on the field
“Everyone's different but I found for me if I have something to focus on outside of footy it stops you from constantly thinking about things and gives you something to take your mind off it,” he said
"For me when I have something else on my mind I feel like I actually play better footy but also there’s the importance of having something to fall back on post footy."
“You never know what's going to happen so I think it's just important to do something you're interested in and you might find a good career out of it post footy.”

Justice Osborne’s Endorsement in Re: TBS Canada grants novel relief to the mandatory franchise disclosure requirements under the Arthur Wishart Act (Franchise Disclosure)
2000 (Arthur Wishart Act) in the context of the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (the CCAA)
The Body Shop Canada Limited (the Company) filed a notice of intention to make a proposal pursuant to Section 50.4(1) of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (Canada)
perfume and skin care retailer with 105 store locations across Canada
operating under “The Body Shop” brand
which was recognized globally for its natural and ethically sourced beauty products
The Company was the wholly owned subsidiary of The Body Shop International Limited (the UK Parent)
who itself had filed for administration in the United Kingdom on February 13
The NOI Proceedings were converted to an application pursuant to the CCAA on July 5
the Court granted a Sale Process Order approving the sale and investor solicitation process in respect of the Company (the Sale Process)
The Sale Process was designed with two key considerations in mind
the Company did not own “The Body Shop” trademark or its intellectual property
but rather held a license through a distribution and franchise agreement with the UK Parent
there was an ongoing simultaneous process to find potential buyers of the UK Parent
in order to fully transition “The Body Shop” business to a new entity
a purchaser had to enter into both an asset purchase agreement with TBS Canada and a franchise agreement with the UK Parent
Shortly after the approval of the Sale Process
the UK Parent was sold to The Body Shop International Limited (the UK Purchaser)
The UK Purchaser engaged with the Company and the Court-appointed Monitor
After engaging with over 55 parties to solicit interest in acquiring the business or assets of the Company
an affiliate of a global private equity firm with significant experience in operating brands in Canada
was identified as the successful bidder through the Sale Process and by the UK Purchaser as the preferred franchise partner
Dentons represented the UK Purchaser throughout the Sale Process negotiations
the Company entered into an asset purchase agreement with the Purchaser (the APA)
The transaction contemplated within the APA was subject to
The issue of whether Court should approve the APA was heard and decided by the Honourable Justice Osborne on December 14
The proposed APA provided a very favourable outcome for stakeholders of the Company
including the continuation of employment of over 500 employees through the upcoming holiday season
the closing of the transaction could not be delayed from December 16
without triggering significant negative economic risk for the transaction
Franchise laws in six Canadian provinces where The Body Shop stores are located require a franchisor to provide a franchisee with a franchise disclosure document at least 14 days before entering into the franchise agreement
The franchise disclosure document required pursuant to section 5 of the Arthur Wishart Act must include all material facts
financial statements and all copies of the proposed franchise agreements
Providing the franchise disclosure document is a mandatory obligation and the failure to do so triggers a statutory right for the franchisee to rescind the franchise agreement
The Court found that this document would take several weeks or months to prepare and deliver to the Purchaser
which created an irreconcilable conflict with the commercial need for the transaction to close by December 16
the execution of a master franchise agreement between the UK Purchaser and the Purchaser was conditional on the Court granting relief from the franchise disclosure requirements.
The Court took into consideration the economics of the transaction
the potential recovery for creditors and stakeholders
as well the objective of the relevant statutes in coming to the decision to grant the declaratory relief
Critical to the Court’s consideration were the following factors:
Justice Osborne succinctly described the challenge of the proposed transaction in paragraphs 52-56 of his Endorsement:
[52] The complicating factor is that under franchise laws in six Canadian provinces in which retail stores of [the Company] are located
the UK Purchaser) must provide to a franchisee (i.e.
a franchise disclosure document at least 14 days before the earlier of the franchise agreement being signed
and the payment of any consideration to the franchise or relating to the franchise
[55] To require the UK Purchaser to prepare and deliver the franchise disclosure document would delay the closing of the Transaction by at least several months
if [the Company] cannot main operation of the Canadian business in the interim
[56] Absent an exemption from application of the governing statute
or an exemption from the requirement to deliver the franchise disclosure document
if the UK Purchaser fails to provide the franchise disclosure document or provides a franchise disclosure document that is deficient
the Purchaser may have the right to rescind the Franchise Agreement and claim damages: in this case against the UK Purchaser
Justice Osborne correctly observed that the circumstances before the Court were “somewhat unusual”
the Court was satisfied that the relief sought should be granted for the following reasons:
In addition to granting the declaratory relief
the Court made certain corollary orders including approving the underlying asset purchase agreement
granting a sealing order to certain commercially sensitive information
granting an assignment order of certain material agreements
expanding the Monitor’s powers and making a declaration enabling former employees to receive benefits under WEPPA
This decision reflects the Court’s understanding of the unique commercial circumstances affecting the proposed transaction and the application of significant flexibility required to address the negative impacts of rigid adherence to statutory requirements
By granting relief from the disclosure requirements of the Arthur Wishart Act and other comparable provincial legislation
the Court facilitated a transaction that preserved over 500 jobs
maintained numerous commercial leases and maximized creditor recovery
This case underscores the importance of judicial flexibility in the insolvency and restructuring context to support outcomes that benefit all stakeholders involved
While the Court provided guidance around the limited circumstances in which it is prepared to dispense with compliance with the mandatory provisions of provincial legislation designed with remedial intent
the decision of Justice Osborne should not be taken as a license to seek dispensation with mandatory statutory requirements
it was the combination of a high-level of commercial sophistication
the alignment in interest of all stakeholders in the closing of the transaction and the serious economic consequences that would be triggered by a delay in closing

Tyran Wishart played a match-influencing hand in the Storm's Round 24 win over the Panthers after coming off the bench in the second half
Best finishes of 2024: Panthers v Storm - Round 24
Wishart: "I got a small taste last year and loved it"
NRL Press Conference: Storm v Raiders - Round 9
NRL Press Conference: Storm v Rabbitohs - Round 8
NRL Press Conference: Dolphins v Storm - Round 7
Tyran Wishart moved to Melbourne midway through the 2021 season determined to do whatever it takes to break into the NRL
The playmaker's progress at the Dragons had stalled after moving through the Illawarra pathway as a promising halfback
So when Wishart said he was willing to do whatever it took
Even if it meant lining up on the wing or as an undersized middle forward
Fast forward three years and the 24-year-old is a key figure in the Storm's premiership quest
a Mr Fix It who coach Craig Bellamy can turn to plug gaps when needed
Wishart is preparing for his 50th NRL match in Saturday's clash with the Dolphins
It's just the latest example of his versatility and desire to do whatever it takes to help his team
"That's been my role for the last couple of years," he told NRL.com
"At training I'm throwing myself into different positions and just getting back to that utility role
"It's what I came down here to come and do
The fact I have been in the team each week has been pretty pleasing
As a team our goal is set on getting to finals and doing the best we can to lift that trophy."
The utility label has attracted negative connotations in the past but it has quickly developed into one of the most important roles in an NRL team in the past few years
The introduction of Head Injury Assessments and the increased pace of the modern game thanks to set restarts have seen many clubs carry a versatile player on the bench that can cover multiple positions and break games open in the second half
It's a common theme among the competition heavyweights
At Penrith emerging playmaker Jack Cole is the bench utility
the Sharks have Sifa Talakai while Gordon Chan Kum Tong can cover multiple positions for the Sea Eagles
Roosters utility Connor Watson has seen his value soar in recent years
leading to a NSW Origin debut during this year's series victory
The 28-year-old has spent much of his career moving between the centres
hooker and lock as a stop-gap solution when needed during stints at the Roosters and Knights
Watson conceded he used to find it frustrating being asked to switch positions on a regular basis but now views it as a sign of the important contribution he can make to his team
"Early in my career it was something I didn't like," he said
"I didn't like the fact I would move around because I wanted to just play in one spot
As I've got older I've started to see it as a positive and I actually enjoy playing in different spots at different times
"With head knocks and injuries it's become more important to have guys who can cover all of those spots."
Wishart's contribution to the Storm hasn't solely centred around his impact off the bench
with the emerging talent starting at five-eighth in eight games this year while Cameron Munster recovered from a groin injury
Replacing the Queensland and Australian representative can be a daunting task
but Wishart didn't skip a beat and received high praise from Bellamy and halfback Jahrome Hughes
The Storm won seven from eight games with Wishart in the No.6 jumper and they currently sit on top of the NRL ladder
four points clear of the Panthers with three games remaining
The playmaker said his focus throughout that time was to play his natural game rather than attempting to recreate Munster's playing style
Watson has learnt a similar lesson throughout his career and found it much easier to settle into different positions at short notice once he adopted that mindset
I can't speak for what other people think when they do it
is just playing the role how I want to play," Watson said
"I'm not trying to change my game to suit to play in the centres or in the halves
doing them to the best of my ability and just playing football
"It's what we've been doing since we were little
We've played in all different positions since we were little and we were just playing football."
The nature of rugby league has changed significantly since set restarts were introduced when the competition returned from a COVID hiatus in 2020
The rule was then expanded in 2021 before being refined in 2022 and the pace of the game has increased significantly in the past four years
Hulking middle forwards have found life increasingly difficult while space has opened up for smaller livewires in the final 10 minutes of each half
Wishart has been among the biggest exponents of the new style of play
making 12 line breaks this season and creating opportunities for those around him
The utility scored a decisive try in last week's two-point win over the Panthers
throwing a dummy and slicing through a tired defensive line to level the scores despite Melbourne having a man in the sin bin
It's the type of play Bellamy expects to see from Wishart on a regular basis but the playmaker has learnt searching for such a moment can come with unintended consequences
"When you come on with 10 or 20 minutes to go and try too hard
that's when things go wrong," Wishart said
"You've just got to keep a lookout from the bench and see how the game's going
"I try and identify different areas where I can make an impact
then I just try to slip in and do my job."
It's a job Wishart has completed to a high standard throughout 2024 and one that could prove extremely important for the Storm throughout the next seven weeks

Credit: Jeremy Ng/Getty ImagesThe NRL’s high shot crackdown continues to have coaches
and fans scratching their heads after Manly forward Corey Waddell was not sin-binned for a high shot on Tyran Wishart late in the Sea Eagles’ 48-24 loss to Melbourne but today has been banned for three matches
The Bulldogs’ fifth win on the trot was soured with Kurt Mann handed a two-match ban for his crusher tackle on Knight Thomas Carr
The Waddell tackle had commentators bemused with Fox Sports pundit and Penrith great Greg Alexander lamenting
“we’ve seen players binned this weekend for less.”

Five players were cited after round five with Bulldog Jacob Preston and Knight Adam Elliott receiving fines for their high shots
while Newcastle’s Phoenix Crossland was fined for tripping
The Waddell tackle capped off a forgetful match for Manly with the much-famed Battle of Brookvale showdown between the great foes more a massacre as the Storm ran riot after losing to St George last round
Fresh off a broken hand suffered only two weeks ago
Jahrome Hughes was the star for the Storm on Sunday as he helped lay on three tries in a pummelling of the Sea Eagles
His halves partner Cameron Munster also impressed
while winger Grant Anderson scored a hat-trick to help Melbourne stay in the NRL’s top four
The only concerns for Melbourne were precautionary early marks for fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen and winger Xavier Coates
after a back cork and hamstring tightness respectively
as the Storm rebounded from last week’s shock loss to St George Illawarra to show again why they are a premiership force
Melbourne blew Manly apart in two separate seven-minute stints
going from 2-0 down to 18-2 up without Manly touching the ball early in the first half
And while the Sea Eagles got it back to 18-10 by halftime
the Storm repeated the dose after the break with another trio of tries
His first moment of magic came in the first half when he laid on a perfectly lofted ball for Anderson, putting it out in front of the winger to run on to and score.
With the game back in the balance after the break, the Kiwi No.7 fooled the defence when he looked left and threw a long cut-out ball to the right for Anderson to score again.
In the next set Hughes did the damage from inside his own half, throwing a dummy before running downfield and helping send Papenhuyzen over.
“He’s a big part of (the turnaround from last week),” Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy said.
“We know he is a good player and a smart player, but he is a tough unit as well.
“To play tonight after the operation he had on his hand. There was no push from in the club from medical people or players.
“But he put his hand up and wanted to play. I thought he was thousands (to one to play). And he’s very important to the side as we all know.”
Muster also had his fingerprints on the flogging, putting Stefano Utoikamanu across for Melbourne’s first, before the five-eighth scored the second himself.
The loss took Manly’s record without the injured Tom Trbojevic to 16 wins from 48 games since the start of 2021, compared with 38 from 58 with him.
The fullback is due back from a knee injury in a month, but it is unlikely he would have saved them on Sunday.
The Sea Eagles did well to get back into the match at halftime and hung in the arm-wrestle for the first seven minutes after the break.
But when Ben Trbojevic made a half bust and was ruled to have played the ball incorrectly, Melbourne got the ball, scored, and the hosts didn’t cross again until they were 48-10 down.
Manly also lost Jason Saab to an ankle injury late, but they are confident it is only a minor one ahead of Saturday’s clash with Cronulla in Perth.
“The game was just won in two blocks,” Sea Eagles coach Anthony Seibold said.
“Inside those six sets (where they scored in succession) we gave them field position through a penalty or fundamentals. And they are a very good side, so they made us pay.”

Tyran Wishart has vowed to “keep it simple” as he prepares for his role as the Storm’s ‘Mr Fix-It’ in Sunday's grand final against the Panthers
The 24-year-old has played all but one game in another season of the excellence for the Storm and heads into the decider full of confidence
Wishart grew into a starting role in the halves after injuries to Dally M Medal winner Jahrome Hughes early on and a long-term groin issue for Cameron Munster
Wishart enjoyed a golden patch in the No.6 jersey between Round 12 and 21
scoring five tries and setting up three others as the Storm won eight of nine to maintain their lofty ladder position
In a season that has seen him fill in everywhere from lock and hooker to five-eighth and fullback
Wishart has relished a return to the No.14 bench role with the Storm's first-choice spine back on deck
and try not to overthink it,” he said in the lead-up to the decider
“Just worrying about the most likely situation to happen
“There is always that opportunity or chance that something’s going to go wrong
I like to think I’ve done enough reps and extras in certain positions so that if it does happen
I’ll try and do anything that I can to make sure that I’m ready to go for any situation.”
He reflected that he was proud of a season where he has established himself as a first-grade regular for the first time
Someone else who has undoubtedly watched his progress with pride is his father
who played 177 first-grade games for the Illawarra Steelers and St George Illawarra while representing New South Wales and Australia in the 1990s
A member of the St George Illawarra side that made it all the way to the grand final in their debut season in 1999
Rod Wishart's last game was the loss to the Storm in an epic decider at Stadium Australia
The irony isn't lost on Tyran that he enters his first grand final representing the team that shattered his dad's dreams 25 years ago
but he knows Rod will be well and truly in his corner come Sunday
Now 54 games into his NRL career and looking more at home by the week
Tyran will take the family mantra into the biggest match of his life
and that’s what I try to do as well," he said
Grant: "Take confidence from what we've done this season"
The connection Rod has with rugby league in the Illawarra has led many to speculate that a return to the Dragons looms in Tyran’s future
There will likely be some tough decisions for Wishart to make as his contract expires at the end of 2025
particularly if he’s unable to break into the Storm’s starting side
and that’s something that the Storm takes a lot of pride in,” he said
“It took a few days to sink in [that I was playing in a grand final]
started previewing the game and doing our usual things

Laurie Daley’s second coming as NSW Origin coach officially started in an airconditioned hotel conference room at Brighton-le-Sands on Saturday
Some of the biggest names in the NRL – including Nathan Cleary
Tom Trbojevic and Jarome Luai – spent a few hours listening to Daley
who last oversaw the Blues during the 2017 series

The only player in attendance who had worked with the coach at Origin level was Jake Trbojevic
James Tedesco and Nicho Hynes were not invited to The Brighton
and Penrith pair Lindsay Smith and Mitch Kenny
“I had only ever said g’day to most of the boys
so it was a good chance to tell them a bit about my story and my history
and talk to them about what my expectations are,” Daley said
“I also wanted to speak to them about what could be built on from last year
Most of the players involved in last year’s successful campaign under Michael Maguire were at the gathering
Game one of this year’s series is in Brisbane on May 28
“You also have young Lachie Galvin and Matty Burton
You can only hope they’re all available when it comes to selection.”
South Sydney’s Mitchell was a standout in his only game in Melbourne before injury ruled him out of the decider last year
saying: “I’m sure he’ll be an important part of the puzzle.”
In what can be considered a full-circle moment
Wishart impressed in a number of positions for Melbourne last year
he will compete with Roosters utility Connor Watson for the No.14 jersey
“I like how he played last year; he’s got great versatility
and he’s someone who deserves to be here because of these performances,” Daley said
Greg Inglis has joined the Wests Tigers’ coaching staff

the Tigers confirmed ‘GI’ would work as a specialist coach with the outside backs

The 38-year-old Inglis had previously spent time mentoring several Tigers
Tigers’ NRLW coach Brett Kimmorley said of Inglis joining his staff: “Greg is a phenomenal addition to our coaching staff
and ability to connect with players are second to none
“I have no doubt that he will have a profound impact on our squad as we build towards the upcoming season
as well as attending our pathways education session
and the support from the club to continue to grow in the NRLW program is evident with this investment
“He’s been in some very good systems at very good clubs
so we’re rapt he’s on board and he’s a part of us.”
which means they are not allowed to train until 4 pm
That makes it even more important for the coaches to communicate with players quickly and effectively
“When you’re restricted with how long the players are allowed to train in the NRLW
you try to fit everything into a few hours a few afternoons a week – to have Greg there to mentor players
and be that good voice to bounce things off
it’s an enormous bonus for us as a club and bonus for our female players to have someone like him,” Kimmorley said
Parramatta has appointed Mitchell Moses as the captaincy successor to Clint Gutherson
It’s one of the first big calls for new coach Jason Ryles

“I am incredibly proud and honoured to be named captain,” Moses said

“Mitch has shown strong leadership qualities both on and off the field
and I believe he is ready to lead our club into the future,” Ryles said
I’m confident he will continue to grow as a leader.”
Parramatta Eels CEO Jim Sarantinos added: “Mitch has been an outstanding player for our club
and we are thrilled to see him step into the role of captain
Mitch’s appointment is an important moment for the club as we move into an exciting new era for our football program.”

Luckless Rabbitohs centre Campbell Graham’s return to the paddock has been delayed by a broken hand the club prepares to be without skipper Cameron Murray and leading prop Junior Tatola for the start of the season
Graham came from a field session at the Rabbitohs’ Maroubra training base in pain on Tuesday and scans have confirmed a fracture in his hand
Souths medical staff are awaiting a specialist verdict on whether Graham requires an operation to fix the break

Should Graham require surgery on the injury
it would likely rule him out of Wayne Bennett’s first game back in charge of the club against his old Dolphins outfit in round one on March 7
The Kangaroos centre has endured a wretched injury run during the past 18 months, missing the entire 2024 season with an ongoing sternum issue
The Rabbitohs received a much-needed boost on Wednesday with news that Latrell Mitchell will be free to play against the Dolphins as the NRL ruled his one-game suspension can be served in next month’s All Stars match.
ex-Dolphins back-rower Euan Aitken and veteran winger Alex Johnston are all facing an uphill battle to be fit though as South Sydney’s 2024 injury woes linger into Bennett’s return campaign
Murray is recovering from wrist surgery late last year to repair his scapholunate ligament after playing with the injury for Australia in the Pacific Championships
Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga defended his staff’s handling of Murray’s injury – picked up a few days earlier at training – given the Souths skipper did not complain of any pain before playing 80 minutes and making 51 tackles against New Zealand
Murray was always facing at least a three-month recovery from his operation and his exact return date is still up in the air
Fellow forward Tatola is running again after two foot operations and an infection that threatened his career and limited him to the first six games of 2024

The 28-year-old is yet to join team training ahead of the Rabbitohs two pre-season trials against Manly (February 15) and the Dragons (February 22)
and the club is especially wary of pushing his return too early
Johnston’s ongoing recovery from an Achilles rupture and Aitken’s shoulder and pectoral surgery are also tipped to keep them out for the opening rounds of 2025
stretching South Sydney’s depth to start the season
Concern at the Wests Tigers over the fitness of $6 million signing Jarome Luai has been eased after scans cleared the newly minted co-captain of serious injury
Luai will be kept on ice for several days after sustaining a quad injury late last week
with the Tigers’ first trial game against the Bulldogs three weeks away

The star Tigers recruit was sent for scans on the injury over the weekend and results have eased concerns of a hampered lead-in to his first campaign at the club
Luai participated in a pre-season army camp in Queensland’s Moreton Bay
where he impressed club officials and camp organisers
The 28-year-old’s move from four-time premiers Penrith to the wooden spooners makes him the biggest recruitment story in the NRL
Luai has been honing a new halves combination with rising star Lachlan Galvin for the past month
The Tigers have trial matches scheduled against Canterbury (February 16) and Parramatta (February 21) ahead of a March 7 start to the season against Newcastle
it’s expected the Tigers will only field a full-strength spine in one of those games
Luai is slated to be a senior voice in round one given co-captain and hooker Api Koroisau is serving the last week of a suspension from 2024
making for a young play-making spine of Galvin

Luai’s rise to share the captaincy with Koroisau comes after Samoa’s tour of the UK meant he only arrived at Concord late last year
but the NSW Origin star has impressed plenty at the Tigers since
“He’s been huge already for our young guys Lachie [Galvin] and [Latu] Fainu
he’s an Origin and grand final-winning half,” Koroisau said
“Both the young guys are asking questions all the time and Romey’s very vocal anyway
and we need that guy leading the team at halfback
You can just see the confidence he gives people.”
Koroisau played alongside Luai in two premiership wins at Penrith before making his own move to the Tigers in 2023. Luai’s five-year, $6 million deal includes a player option for 2027 that could allow him to leave the club early
but Koroisau is backing him to be a circuit-breaking signing and deliver as a marquee recruit
“He’s very different these days,” Koroisau said
“He was the guy that when you gave him the ball
He took the reins when Nath [Nathan Cleary] was out and you could see him maturing right in front of you
He can be the five-eighth with the big plays and the game manager
because he’s grown into such a good leader.”
Cronulla coach Craig Fitzgibbon was quick to reel off several strong points when it came to why he would keep Nicho Hynes as his No.7
and resist any move to five-eighth or even fullback
but it was lost on most people at the time when he floated the idea of moving Hynes to fullback

“I think that would bring the best out of Nicho and take a bit of pressure off him,” Johns told SEN about a move to No.1 during last year’s NRL finals
“I don’t know what that would mean for Will Kennedy
it might be shifting something around and weakening another
Cronulla have made the finals the past three years
but have lacked that circuit-breaker needed to win a second title
and the only thing the No.7 needed was more time developing his combination with Braydon Trindall
“In Nicho’s time in the halves for the Sharks
and represented his state and country,” Fitzgibbon said
“In a sample size of three years as a half for the Sharks
and when Hynes came back and wore the No.7
A lot of people believe there is something in the number
Nicho just needs to perform his role with the way we play ..
“What we haven’t had is a great deal of time with Tricky and Nicho as our halves
Tricky had his time out when Nicho was playing
They haven’t had a great deal of time as a combination.”
Fitzgibbon said Hynes started last year in arguably career-best form
“had some turbulence in the middle of the year” – Hynes was dropped after the first Origin game – then took a long time to overcome an injury on the eve of the finals
turned up really fit and ready to go and looks good,” Fitzgibbon said
Cronulla had several players undergo off-season surgery
including a shoulder operation for Trindall
but expect to have a full list of players to choose from for the season-opener against premiers Penrith in Las Vegas
They have recruited top prop Addin Fonua-Blake who has quickly earned the respect of his teammates
Off-contract Cronulla winger Ronaldo Mulitalo has broken his silence about his playing future
insisting he wants to get a deal done that will continue his career in the Shire
There were reports last weekend about Mulitalo being shopped to the Brisbane Broncos
but his new management company met with Sharks officials on Tuesday
and both parties are confident a deal will be struck

prop Tom Hazelton and winger Sam Stonestreet all off contract at the end of the year
Kennedy is in the process of switching management companies
while Hazelton has helped early talks with Newcastle who need a front-row replacement for Canterbury-bound Leo Thompson
Cronulla chairman Steve Mace is close with Mulitalo away from the field
and when speaking to this masthead at Thursday night’s club launch and cultural event
all but assured the 25-year-old would stay put
Mulitalo ridiculed the Broncos’ report via social media
and said: “I looked at that and had a laugh
I’ve made it clear to my management I obviously want to hopefully get something done here
I have a team around me who know what my ambitions are and what I want to do in this game
I’ve poured my heart into this place through the good times and bad times.”
and “I need to play halfback or become a big prop to get some coin”
“But there’s more to it than just money,” Mulitalo said
and I’m at the point of my career now where championships matter
I see it [the potential] in this group here.”
The future of Dragons prop Francis Molo is in doubt after the ex-Queensland Origin forward was granted an extended absence from training on mental health grounds

Sources speaking on the condition of anonymity
have told this masthead that Molo has not attended Dragons training for more than a week and is now taking a mental health leave of absence from club duties
Molo is due to front St George Illawarra officials next week to discuss his future at the club
Molo’s management has discussed the prospect of an early release from the final two years of his contract with St George Illawarra
though no formal release has been requested
Molo’s management and the Dragons declined to comment when contacted
The Rugby League Players Association has been briefed on the matter and is monitoring the situation
was signed by ex-Dragons coach Anthony Griffin and joined the club after playing two Origin matches for Queensland in 2021
He has since re-signed on a two-year deal under current coach Shane Flanagan that began this season
and most recently played for Samoa against England in November
Molo played all but one of the Dragons games last season and is a key pillar of Flanagan’s forward pack
St George Illawarra’s bid to sign veteran prop Matt Lodge fell over late last week after months of negotiations with the ex-Manly forward
Lodge completed a medical with the Dragons
who were willing to offer him a near minimum-wage
the parties failed to come to terms and Lodge
Flanagan has openly conceded he is light on for experienced middle forwards
The Dragons have one roster spot remaining in their top-30 squad
which includes several promising uncapped forwards

“You also have young Lachie Galvin and Matty Burton
You can only hope they’re all available when it comes to selection.”
South Sydney’s Mitchell was a standout in his only game in Melbourne before injury ruled him out of the decider last year
saying: “I’m sure he’ll be an important part of the puzzle.”
in the room for the Blues’ first meeting
“I like how he played last year; he’s got great versatility

Greg Inglis has joined the Wests Tigers’ coaching staff
with the NRL Hall of Fame inductee to work as an assistant with the club’s NRLW team
A day after Queensland Rugby League announced Inglis would coach their women’s Origin team
the Tigers confirmed ‘GI’ would work as a specialist coach with the outside backs
Tigers’ NRLW coach Brett Kimmorley said of Inglis joining his staff: “Greg is a phenomenal addition to our coaching staff
“I have no doubt that he will have a profound impact on our squad as we build towards the upcoming season
“Greg has finished an NRL coaching course
“He’s been in some very good systems at very good clubs
so we’re rapt he’s on board and he’s a part of us.”
“When you’re restricted with how long the players are allowed to train in the NRLW
you try to fit everything into a few hours a few afternoons a week – to have Greg there to mentor players
it’s an enormous bonus for us as a club and bonus for our female players to have someone like him,” Kimmorley said
It’s one of the first big calls for new coach Jason Ryles
J’maine Hopgood and Jack Williams in a new-look leadership group
“I am incredibly proud and honoured to be named captain,” Moses said

Luckless Rabbitohs centre Campbell Graham’s return to the paddock has been delayed by a broken hand the club prepares to be without skipper Cameron Murray and leading prop Junior Tatola for the start of the season
Graham came from a field session at the Rabbitohs’ Maroubra training base in pain on Tuesday and scans have confirmed a fracture in his hand
it would likely rule him out of Wayne Bennett’s first game back in charge of the club against his old Dolphins outfit in round one on March 7
The Kangaroos centre has endured a wretched injury run during the past 18 months
The Rabbitohs received a much-needed boost on Wednesday with news that Latrell Mitchell will be free to play against the Dolphins as the
ex-Dolphins back-rower Euan Aitken and veteran winger Alex Johnston are all facing an uphill battle to be fit though as South Sydney’s 2024 injury woes linger into Bennett’s return campaign
Kangaroos coach – picked up a few days earlier at training – given the Souths skipper did not complain of any pain before playing 80 minutes and making 51 tackles against New Zealand
Johnston’s ongoing recovery from an Achilles rupture and Aitken’s shoulder and pectoral surgery are also tipped to keep them out for the opening rounds of 2025
stretching South Sydney’s depth to start the season
with the Tigers’ first trial game against the Bulldogs three weeks away
Luai participated in a pre-season army camp in Queensland’s Moreton Bay
The 28-year-old’s move from four-time premiers Penrith to the wooden spooners makes him the biggest recruitment story in the NRL
it’s expected the Tigers will only field a full-strength spine in one of those games
Luai’s rise to share the captaincy with Koroisau comes after Samoa’s tour of the UK meant he only arrived at Concord late last year
“He’s been huge already for our young guys Lachie [Galvin] and [Latu] Fainu
he’s an Origin and grand final-winning half,” Koroisau said
“Both the young guys are asking questions all the time and Romey’s very vocal anyway
You don’t have to ask for his opinion
“That’s something we’ve needed
You can just see the confidence he gives people.”
Koroisau played alongside Luai in two premiership wins at Penrith before making his own move to the Tigers in 2023
“He’s very different these days,” Koroisau said
“He was the guy that when you gave him the ball
because he’s grown into such a good leader.”

How Reece Walsh and a custom headgear inspired Meaney's return
This is probably not the page you’re looking for
Despite being in the contest in their past two matches
the Dragons are still searching for their first win of the season and have another challenge on their hands when they host the undefeated Storm
St George Illawarra have had plenty of time to stew on their Round 2 loss to the Rabbitohs
where they let the game slip late after one stage leading 24-12 to lose 25-24
Melbourne come into this match with an opening round win over the Eels
a week off for a bye and hard-fought win last week against the Panthers and will be looking for an improved performance after struggling to overcome the under-strength defending premiers
The Storm started strongly against a side missing key personnel including Dylan Edwards
but when chief player Nathan Cleary was ruled out in the eighth minute with concussion
the absence seemed to affect them more than it did the Panthers who rallied to take the game to their hosts who were able to hold on for a narrow 30-24 win
it is the Storm who will be missing their star halfback
with Jahrome Hughes suffering a broken hand against the Panthers
Big man Nelson Asofa-Solomona will also miss the match after failing a HIA following the game
placing him in the NRL's concussion protocol
Dragons: A late switch an hour before kick-off with Toby Couchman moving to the bench and former Blues and Kangaroos prop David Klemmer starting the game in his club debut
Young back-rower Dylan Egan also joins the interchange for his NRL debut
Centre Moses Suli has been named to play despite suffering a rib injury in Round 2 against Souths
Storm: Marion Seve has been added to the bench an hour out from kick-off in place of prop Lazarus Vaalepu
The versatile Tyran Wishart takes over at halfback from Jahrome Hughes (hand) while Grant Anderson moves to centre to replace Nick Meaney (jaw)
Will Warbrick returns from concussion on the wing
Nelson Asofa-Solomona (concussion protocol) will miss the game
Bronson Garlick comes in as the No.14 with Wishart in the starting side

A family has managed to win a house in one of Brisbane’s most sought-after school catchments
after a fight between four active bidders on Saturday morning
has been unchanged since it was built in 2000
Agent Henry Wong with the Henry Wong Team at RE/MAX said the auction attracted seven registered bidders
representing a changing generation of homeowners
it’s the younger families that are buying.”
found seven registered bidders fighting for it on Saturday morning
with the pace of the bidding war quickly skyrocketing as offers were sent back and forth
“Once we actually cracked the $1.4m mark it got really slow
Offers quickly rose above the reserve price
as well as the suburb median of $1,420,600
Three bidders were still participating when the home went on the market at $1.4 million
but it went down to two buyers after $1.5m
the winner claimed the home for an offer of $1.526m
The suburb is part of the Mansfield State High School catchment
ranked as one of the best secondary schools in the city
Wishart is located in the Mansfield State High School catchment
one of Brisbane’s top ten public secondary schools
With homes in the area also being close to Wishart State School and the private school Citipointe Christian College
Mr Wong said the suburb was in high demand
“The catchment wars are still on,” he said
“When you can walk to Wishart State School and Mansfield State High
The home went to a family migrating from China
who wanted their kid to go into Wishart’s schools
Mr Wong said the sellers were “over the moon” at the final sale price
congratulating each other at the end of the auction
the buyers – a young couple moving from China – were happy to move into the same suburb as a family member
“Usually when people come from different parts of the world
they come in groups and they want to live close together,” Mr Wong said
He added the family had moved to Wishart to help get their children in the popular school catchments
and appreciated how close the nearby schools were from their home
“Who wants to spend their time in traffic?” he said
“That’s a big factor when it comes to families with children … they live busy lives as it is.”

In December, a Goulburn Murray Cricket prospect was afforded the opportunity to compete against the country’s best emerging cricketers.
Nondies-Cohuna’s Xavier Wishart was selected to join Victoria Country for the under-19 National Championships, held in Adelaide from December 12 to 19.
Wishart and Vic Country started the tournament on the right foot with a 134-run win over the Northern Territory in their opening contest.
He put in a solid shift with the ball, bowling a team-high 10 overs and taking 3-50.
Vic Country wasn’t able to pick up any more wins in the pool stage, going down to Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania, Wishart also unable to add to his wicket tally.
This led the side to a seventh-place playoff with the ACT, where Wishart’s side strolled to a six-wicket win after bowling the capital side out for 137, the Nondies prospect bowling 1-23 to help his side secure the placing.
The developmental format allowed sides to name a different 11 in each innings, and Wishart was not provided the opportunity to showcase his skills with the bat.
The young gun has been a bright spot in a low season for Nondies-Cohuna so far this year in the McMahon Shield.
Wishart is one of only two Nondies batsmen to have logged more than 100 runs this season, scoring 139 at an average of 34.75 through seven innings.
He hasn’t been able to find as much success with the ball, taking only one wicket thus far.
Wishart is also part of the Vic Country under-19 emerging players squad.
This year's Prime Minister's 13 showdown with Papua New Guinea will be a family affair for Reuben Garrick and Tyran Wishart.

Scottish Lib Dem MSP Beatrice Wishart leads the first Scottish Parliament fishing industry debate since 2022
disputing Conservative claims of securing it
Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for Shetland
has led the first debate on Scotland’s fishing industry in the Scottish Parliament since 2022
highlighting key challenges facing the sector in 2025
the debate has sparked political controversy
with the Scottish Lib Dems disputing Conservative claims that they were responsible for securing the discussion
A spokesperson for the Scottish Conservatives told The Fishing Daily today that their MSP
Tim Eagle had written to the Scottish Government calling for a dedicated debate on fishing before Tuesday’s discussion
who secured the debate through a members’ debate slot
She also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the late Dr Ian Napier
Senior Fisheries Policy Adviser at UHI Shetland
Scottish Conservative MSPs suggested they had secured the discussion
Wishart’s team pointed out that she had led previous parliamentary debates on fisheries
including the first Holyrood debate on Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs) in 2023
which were later scrapped by the SNP-Green government after industry backlash
Wishart acknowledged the growing role of renewables
but warned against policies that harm the fishing industry:
She emphasised that marine spatial squeeze is becoming a major concern
as traditional fishing areas are lost to offshore wind farms and energy infrastructure:
“We have seen traditional fishing areas lost to at-sea infrastructure
From the discovery of North Sea oil and gas over 50 years ago
we now have a growing renewable energy sector with sites set to host vast swathes of offshore windfarms.”
She stressed that while climate change is real
so too is the impact on fishing businesses:
“Offshore wind cannot be at the expense of fishing
A transition is not just if it ends up squeezing the life out of viable fishing businesses.”
Wishart reiterated the need for stronger government action to support Scotland’s fishing industry:
“There is so much that needs to be aired about the challenges and opportunities for the fishing sector
Almost every paragraph of my speech could have been a debate in itself.”
She also called for the Scottish Government to provide greater resources to the Marine Directorate
ensuring it has the capacity to effectively support the industry:
“Our fishermen deserve the equal support of the Scottish Government’s eagerness to champion our world-class seafood sector with action.”
With the fishing industry facing mounting pressures
the debate has reignited political tensions over which party is doing the most to represent Scotland’s fishing communities
Whether the Scottish Government will take further action remains to be seen

who won Storm’s Billy Slater Rookie of the Year Award in 2022
who was player of the match in this year’s Under-19s Origin match
have signed on through to the end of the 2025 season
Wishart first joined Storm midway through the 2021 season
He made his debut in round one of 2022 season

The versatile 23-year-old played a number of positions in the backline over his 15 matches

Pezet has been part of Storm’s top 30 squad in 2022 after initially joining the club on a development contract
He has progressed through from the Jersey Flegg competition with the Victorian Thunderbolts to a regular position for the Brisbane Tigers in the Hostplus Cup in the past 12 months

the highlight of his season came in a NSW jumper when he set up four tries in the Blues’ dominant 32-4 win against Queensland in the annual under-19s match
