The City of Onkaparinga’s newest dog park is officially open in Woodcroft after a celebration in Hurtle John Potter Reserve on Saturday
The 4,300m2 fenced park – on the corner of Bains Road and Investigator Drive – offers playful pups a large area for ball and general play
The project was made possible thanks to a $500,000 state government grant following an election commitment by Member for Hurtle Vale Nat Cook MP
City of Onkaparinga Mayor said there has never been a better time to be a dog down south
“Not only are 10 kilometres of our 31-kilometre coastline
but we also now have our fourth dedicated dog park here at Woodcroft’s Hurtle John Potter Reserve,” she said
“We know how important exercise and socialising is for dogs and people alike
and it’s really pleasing to see these new facilities added to the already much-loved reserve and its skate park and playground
“Judging from the excitement we’ve seen about the dog park and toilets from residents these past few months
this place is going to a focal point for the community
active and connected for many for years to come
“A massive thank you to the Member for Hurtle Vale
whose support and the state government funding has made the dog park and toilets possible
“Another big thank you to everyone in the community who provided feedback during the community engagement process – your views were instrumental in shaping the park’s design and features.”
Member for Hurtle Vale Nat Cook MP said she was
“so proud that we’ve been able to deliver this fantastic new dog park for our community”
“Dog parks are a wonderful way to facilitate people spending time outdoors and provides opportunities to build new relationships and connect with those in the local area,” she said
“I’m sure we will see our community coming closer together as a result of this investment by the state government
“I will certainly be there regularly with my beagle
Community engagement on the draft concept plan was undertaken in 2023
The new community facilities add to this popular reserve
which already features a skate park and playground

bringing local produce and specialty coffee
Images: Grazing in the Valley
a brand-new café has quietly opened its doors in Woodcroft
offering a unique spin on the typical grab-and-go coffee shop
As they prepare for their official grand opening
the spotlight is on their standout feature
beautifully curated grazing tables!Grazing in the Valley has been around for the past few years
catering grazing tables and boxes for events around the state
owner Emma has decided to take the leap and open her very own cafe
selling specialty grazing offerings in combination with your favourite cafe treats and local coffee
“I’ve always been the person who’s catered for all of our friends’ events
and a couple of years ago a friend asked me if I could cater one of their corporate events
and I couldn’t do it as I wasn’t licensed or insured,” Emma shared
“Another friend said to me ‘Why don’t you start a food business
do something you love?’ so that’s what I did
Emma jumped right in and started Grazing in the Valley about two years ago now
“We’ve grown nonstop over the past few years
We started from home and about six months into it we extended our kitchen
and another six months later we outgrew that
We then built a commercial kitchen in Lonsdale
and a year later we’ve grown out of that
so we thought why not do a cafe as well!”
“We try and support local businesses
we get as much local produce in as we can.”
plus Emma’s signature grazing boards
will be available to try at the Grand Opening event on Sunday
so as long as there are no fires they’ll be bringing CFS trucks along
we’ll have a grazing table for people to sample
plus we’ll be selling drinks cakes and sweets
We’ll also have a lady doing glitter tattoos
and we’re running a competition to win a year’s worth of babyccinos
“We’re just going to be here and have fun
we’re all so excited,” Emma shares
For those interested in the grazing boards and boxes
Emma says they can be ordered in-store or online
and while stocks last she’ll always try and have some mini boxes available to purchase on-site
you’ll find a combination of local cold meats
the Grazing in the Valley is sure to become a staple in Woodcroft
Don’t miss their grand opening event on Sunday

The Anaheim Ducks are casting a wide net for their coaching search
The club interviewed Jay Woodcroft, met with David Carle, and contacted Mike Sullivan, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported
It was reported Saturday that the Ducks also interviewed Joel Quenneville
Woodcroft was head coach of the Edmonton Oilers for parts of three seasons before being fired following a 3-9-1 start to the 2023-24 campaign
His .643 career winning percentage is the eight-highest all time among coaches with at least 100 games
Carle is the head coach at the University of Denver
He's led the Pioneers to two national championships over the last four years
The 35-year-old has also guided Team USA to back-to-back gold medals at the World Juniors in 2024 and 2025
Sullivan and the Pittsburgh Penguins parted ways Monday after a 10-year run
which included back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017
His 479 wins are the 32nd most in NHL history
The Ducks fired Greg Cronin after the team failed to reach the playoffs for the second straight season
They're mired in a seven-year postseason drought
Anaheim is one of eight coaching vacancies across the league
Rick Tocchet informed the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday that he will depart the organization after a successful two-and-a-half year stint that saw him accumulate the second best point percentage of any coach in franchise history
while winning the Jack Adams for coach of the year in 2024
Replacing what Tocchet brought in Vancouver won’t be easy
and Canucks management is very much in the early stages of a process to identify a new bench boss that the club sincerely believed wouldn’t be required this summer
“We’ll do a shortlist,” said Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford on Tuesday afternoon
“I’d expect our phones will ring on a regular basis from people who want this job
We’ll narrow it down fairly quick and start the process from there
As the process begins the Canucks will cast something of a wide net
There are veteran coaches who have had significant success working with Rutherford who are free agents this hiring cycle
There are also some talented young coaches
appears to be relatively open to considering a variety of different profiles for Tocchet’s replacement
“We have a situation here where we have some star players
the coach has to be able to adjust to how you deal with them compared to the rest of the roster,” Rutherford said
“They have to understand that playing in Vancouver
can they manage the schedule … It’s a bit of a unique situation because of that
you have to have a good structure and system that players can lean on when they’re not playing well.”
Let’s spotlight nine names that would seem to fit the bill of what Vancouver is looking for
Rutherford confirmed that Malhotra will be on the shortlist of the club’s head coach candidates
It makes complete sense when you consider how successful Abbotsford has been this season
Malhotra spearheaded the Abby Canucks to the fifth-best regular season record in the AHL despite seeing many of his key players shuttled up to Vancouver throughout the campaign as call-ups
That included an incredible 13-game winning streak down the stretch when some of Malhotra’s top players were up with the big club
Malhotra has also done an excellent job developing young players: defenceman Elias Pettersson and forwards Aatu Räty and Linus Karlsson
all showed legitimate NHL promise down the stretch
A big part of an AHL head coach’s responsibility is ensuring that players who get called up can hold their own at the NHL level
who didn’t necessarily take the NHL by storm
which is still considered a developmental success
The 44-year-old former Canuck’s knowledge of the game
dogged preparation and detail-oriented style are all impressive
He’s a terrific communicator and is well-regarded as a leader going back to his playing days
There’s a risk in rolling the dice on a candidate who doesn’t have previous NHL head coaching experience and
had never been a head coach at any pro level
But Malhotra has seven seasons of experience as an NHL assistant
which included three years in Vancouver with Travis Green
there are teams having success right now with bench bosses who didn’t have a previous NHL head coaching resume
Louis in Montreal and Kris Knoblauch in Edmonton are three notable recent examples
This management group will have a really deep understanding of how Malhotra operates and whether he’s ready for the next step
Malhotra already has relationships with many of the organization’s key prospects
The structure and playing style he committed to in Abbotsford doesn’t stray far from what Tocchet and the Canucks were doing
which aligns with how this management group wants the team to play
who arrived in Vancouver as an assistant coach with Tocchet in January 2023
has successfully run the defence over the past two and a half seasons
the dominance of the Hughes pairing with Filip Hronek
the development of younger defenders like Elias Pettersson and the two-way bounce back of Tyler Myers
A hard-nosed defender who won multiple Stanley Cups and Olympic Gold with Team Canada in 2002 as a player
Foote has serious weight as a leader and hockey mind
And his Canucks future is murky in the extreme in the wake of Tuesday’s news
He’s widely expected to join Tocchet’s staff at his next stop
Rutherford suggested Tuesday that the club will have to “tread lightly” in navigating the future of their remaining assistant coaches
“I would say that the organization respects the other guys and they will be guys that we will want to keep,” Rutherford said
they might want to bring in one or two of their guys.”
It’s a route that might appeal to Canucks players
Foote has developed a close working relationship with Hughes
and would have the added benefit of maintaining some sense of continuity in the wake of Tocchet’s departure
While Foote has shown his mettle as a top NHL assistant
he’d be an inexperienced candidate for an NHL head coaching job
Foote has never served as a head coach at the professional level
and his performance in one season as a WHL head coach with the Kelowna Rockets in 2019-20 was largely unsuccessful
If experience is what the Canucks are looking for
they won’t find anyone more qualified than Laviolette
The 60-year-old has over 20 years of experience as an NHL head coach and has the seventh-most wins in league history
He’s won a championship and has been to the Stanley Cup Final twice more
Laviolette’s last two stops in the NHL have been a mixed bag
He had quality regular seasons but couldn’t get an aging Capitals team past the first round in 2020-21 and 2021-22
before being fired for missing the playoffs in 2022-23
His first year with the Rangers was a dream as the club won the Presidents’ Trophy and made it to the Eastern Conference final
He unlocked the breakout version of Alexis Lafrenière
had the Rangers defending better and was pushing many of the right buttons
playing like a disjointed bunch rather than a team
the Rangers were one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL
Former Chicago head coach Jeremy Colliton would be an interesting candidate
if the Canucks were open to repatriating the New Jersey Devils assistant coach who left the organization just last summer
is a young bench boss with a ton of experience relative to his listed age
Colliton has enjoyed significant AHL success across stints in Rockford and Abbotsford
and served as the Blackhawks’ head coach for nearly three seasons from 2018-2021
while being put in the unenviable position of replacing Joel Quenneville following his dismissal in November 2018
Not only is Colliton familiar with the organization
but he’s coming off an impressive season running the Devils’ power play under Sheldon Keefe
Though it ran cold in New Jersey’s first-round series loss to the Carolina Hurricanes
are also the league’s best penalty killing team
the Devils managed the third best conversion rate with the man advantage this season — and impressively held up as a dangerous power-play side even after star centre Jack Hughes’ sustained a season-ending shoulder injury
Canucks management hired Yeo in the summer of 2022 to join Bruce Boudreau’s staff as an assistant
It’s telling that the club held onto him even when Boudreau was replaced with Tocchet
Yeo oversaw a dramatic improvement in the Canucks’ penalty kill
which was a significant reason why the club beat Nashville in Round 1 and pushed Edmonton to seven games in Round 2
Vancouver offered Yeo an extension last summer
but he opted to instead join Travis Green’s staff in Ottawa as an assistant for 2024-25
The Senators made the playoffs for the first time in eight years
The 51-year-old is highly regarded and has had two non-interim coaching stints
He’s also got a long-standing relationship with Patrik Allvin dating back to their shared time in the Penguins organization
Louis — he was fired during the 2018-19 season
with Craig Berube replacing him and leading the Blues to the Stanley Cup that year — is what will immediately come to mind for many fans
what’s often forgotten is that he had a genuinely solid three-year run as Minnesota’s bench boss
Yeo is the only coach who’s steered the Wild to a playoff series win over the last 20 years
the Wild were one of the stingiest defensive teams in the NHL
which is something the club will presumably be looking for in its next coach
Nelson is easily the most accomplished head coach in North America who has yet to be given a real opportunity to coach an NHL team for a full season
whose only stint as an NHL head coach came with the Oilers in relief of Dallas Eakins during the 2014-15 campaign
has a ridiculous track record of success both as an NHL assistant and at the AHL level
across two stops and separated by a four-year stint as an assistant coach with the Dallas Stars
Nelson’s teams have won three of the last four Calder Cup playoff trophies in the AHL seasons that he has worked
It’s frankly preposterous given Nelson’s track record that he’s never been handed the keys and permitted to try his hand driving an NHL team
Edmonton was teetering on the edge of disaster when Woodcroft took over in the middle of the 2021-22 season
The Oilers lost the qualifying play-in round of the 2020 bubble playoffs to an aging
mediocre Blackhawks team coached by Colliton
They were swept in the first round by the Winnipeg Jets in 2021
They were outside of a playoff spot with a 23-18-3 record when Dave Tippett was fired on Feb
Woodcroft instantly took the Oilers from mediocrity to Cup contender status
Edmonton went on a 26-9-3 tear once Woodcroft took over
which saved the franchise from an embarrassing playoff miss
but he guided the Oilers to the Western Conference final
That marked the first playoff series win the Oilers had celebrated since 2017 when Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were 20-year-olds
Edmonton continued that momentum into the 2022-23 season
finishing second in the Western Conference with 109 points
The Oilers lost a hard-fought second-round series in the 2023 playoffs to the Vegas Golden Knights
but there was no shame in falling short to the eventual Stanley Cup winners
Woodcraft changed Edmonton’s neutral zone defensive formation to a 1-1-3 structure
He also switched the club from playing man-to-man defence to a zone style
similar to what Vegas ran when it won the Cup
Woodcroft believed those changes would set the Oilers up for better defensive success in the playoffs
the adjustments backfired spectacularly: Edmonton got off to a horrific 3-9-1 start
restabilized the team and took the Oilers to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final
While Woodcroft unquestionably bears responsibility for the failed system change last season
The Oilers weren’t getting any saves (.889 save percentage)
were getting zero bounces offensively (31st-ranked 6.5 percent shooting clip)
not to mention that McDavid and Mattias Ekholm were struggling because they were playing at less than 100 percent health
has a ton of experience in NHL front offices as well
He worked as an assistant general manager and director of hockey operations and was a high-quality AHL head coach with the Charlotte Checkers and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
He’s also been a mainstay on the coaching staff in Pittsburgh since Rutherford hired him in 2019
Vellucci is a quality coach at the AHL level with a ton of hockey experience
but no NHL head coaching experience to speak of
and has done very well when given command of the bench at lower levels
Ducharme’s rapid rise and fall is one of the most unique recent stories in the NHL
Ducharme took over as Montreal’s head coach in the middle of the abbreviated 2020-21 season
He led the underdog Canadiens to a Cinderella run to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final
Ducharme didn’t have much elite offensive firepower on his roster
boasted an elite penalty kill and relied on top-notch goaltending from Carey Price
That’s an intriguing story considering some of the similar ingredients the Canucks are trying to win with
The Canadiens face-planted to a league-worst 8-30-7 record when Ducharme was let go
Shea Weber never played again after the 2021 Cup run
Montreal lost other key players in free agency that summer and had to contend with a brutally short offseason
Ducharme has spent the last two seasons as an assistant in Vegas

LeBrun added that the trio of heavy-hitters aren’t the only names on Anaheim’s list
Kesler retired and Perry left after the subsequent season
Those departures thrust the Ducks into a rebuild that Verbeek hopes to end with a return to the playoffs in 2026
Anaheim will have some dazzling coaching candidates to choose from
Leading the pack is the coach with the second-most wins in NHL history
Quenneville hasn’t been deemed as a clear front-runner for the vacancy
but a second interview is a mighty bode of confidence for a man who was barred from coaching from 2021 to 2024
due to his involvement in assault allegations from the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs
There was only one coaching vacancy by the time Quenneville was reinstated late last summer
and he reportedly wasn’t considered for the role
That makes attention from Anaheim particularly notable
marking Quenneville’s first chance to prove himself after not coaching a full
He won three Stanley Cups with the dynasty-era Chicago Blackhawks in 2010
Woodcroft doesn’t have the multiple years of championship pedigree of Quenneville and Carle
though he did lead the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors to a Calder Cup in the shortened 2020-21 campaign
He was promoted to the NHL partway through the following season and led the Oilers to a pair of playoff berths before being axed after a 3-9-1 start to the 2023-24 season
He is another young head coaching candidate with 20 years of experience behind pro benches
That could serve him well as Anaheim looks to strike a balance between winning now and building for their future
Whomever gets the job he is going to need to address special teams
it doesn’t matter as long as he’s successful
I’d be suprised if Carle took any NHL job right now
he’s gotta be at least a little interested
unless he just went to Anaheim so he could go to Disneyland
I can’t believe a young team like this one would not be looking at Turk Gallant
Verbeek knows what kind of player he was and he should have sources to tell him is still a good coach.

The Anaheim Ducks are ramping up their coaching search for a successor to Greg Cronin
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports former Edmonton Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft and Denver's David Carle have been interviewed and contact has been made with ex-Pittsburgh Penguins bench boss Mike Sullivan
Hearing Ducks have interviewed Jay Woodcroft
Also hear Ducks GM Pat Verbeek recently met with David Carle
Believe Anaheim has also made contact with Mike Sullivan
Joel Quenneville will soon get a second interview
Former Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville is set for a second interview
Cronin was fired last week after two seasons on the job in which the Ducks missed out on the playoffs
was a midseason hire by the Oilers in 2022
promoted from the American Hockey League's Bakersfield Condors upon the firing of Dave Tippett
He amassed a 79-41-13 over parts of three seasons
reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2022
Carle, 35, has been behind the bench of the Pioneers since 2018. He's led the team to National Championships in 2022 and 2024. The Anchorage, AK native also coached the United States to back-to-back gold medals at the 2024 and 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships. Carle had been attached to the Chicago Blackhawks' vacancy
parted ways with the Pens earlier this week after 10 seasons on the job
He became the first American-born head coach to win multiple Stanley Cups when he led the Pens to back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017
Quenneville, 66, has been out of hockey since the fall of 2021 when he resigned from the Florida Panthers in the wake of the investigation of the Blackhawks' handling of allegations of sexual assault against video coach Brad Aldrich during the team's 2010 Stanley Cup run
After previously claiming to have no knowledge of the allegations
multiple witnesses during the investigation claimed that Quenneville was present for a meeting ahead of the Stanley Cup Finals in which the matter was discussed
Quenneville was officially reinstated by the NHL last summer
Quenneville's 1,090 regular-season victories behind the bench of the Panthers, Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues are second all-time behind only Scotty Bowman's 1,467
native won three Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks in 2010
After a rough 2024-25 campaign where they missed the playoffs, the Anaheim Ducks decided to fire Greg Cronin and began their search for a new bench boss
As they continue to look for a new head coach
Pierre Lebrun provided an update on their wide search
who is the former head coach of the Edmonton Oilers
He had an impressive 79-41-13 record before he was relieved of his duties and replaced by Kris Knoblauch
He served as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the World Championship last season and is looking to get another opportunity
Related: Grading the Anaheim Ducks’ Young Players’ 2024-25 Seasons
has been the head coach of the University of Denver in the NCAA since the 2018-19 season
He has also served as the head coach of Team USA at the U20 World Junior Championship for the past two seasons
and it’s no surprise that teams are interested in bringing him in
who was recently fired by the Pittsburgh Penguins after almost a decade as their head coach
has been heavily connected to the New York Rangers since being let go
he has a 479-311-127 record and has won two Stanley Cups
Bringing him into the Ducks’ organization could help guide them back into contention sooner rather than later
Joel Quenneville, who is 66 years old, has faced controversy for his involvement with the Chicago Blackhawks in the early 2010s and was only recently granted permission to seek employment in the NHL again
His involvement in their coaching search has received backlash from fans
but his success previously could entice the Ducks to look past the fans and bring him in
There is no clear indicator of who the “frontrunner” for the job is
but it would be safe to assume Woodcroft and Quenneville are the most likely candidates
Carle has stated previously that he would need the perfect situation and a great offer to be pulled away from the NCAA
while Sullivan is expected to sign with a team fairly quickly
which could eliminate the Ducks from having a chance to bring him in
Lebrun indicates other names out there have a chance at becoming the Ducks’ next head coach
I would assume one of them will end up getting the position
The Ducks will have to weigh the positives and negatives of hiring Quenneville if they decide to go in that direction
considering they could lose season ticket sales from fans who don’t approve of hiring him
Woodcroft’s record indicates he could be a huge help to the Ducks as they look to try and get back into contention
and if the Ducks choose to move away from Quenneville because of the fans’ outrage online
It seems like they’re going to take their time going through the process of choosing their next bench boss
so it will still be a while before anything becomes official

The countdown is on for the grand opening of the brand-new Woodcroft Dog Park this September – a $565,000 project set to improve community amenities for dog owners and their furry companions in the City of Onkaparinga
on the corner of Bains Road and Investigator Drive
the dog park covers 4,300 square meters and has a range of features designed with the help of the community
But you’ll have to hold onto your leashes for just a bit longer – the grass still needs some final touches before welcoming its first guests
The City of Onkaparinga posted to Facebook saying: “We know your doggos are excited about the opening of the new Woodcroft dog park
but the newly laid grass just needs a bit longer to get established before the gates will be open to the public
Full lawn coverage is needed to ensure it can withstand regular use from foot and paw traffic.”
So what’s in store once those gates swing open
The park is set to be an agility wonderland featuring weave poles
and even a sit-stay platform for capturing the cutest pictures of your doggo
and a landscaped areas to enjoy the scenery
The paw-some project wasn’t dreamt up overnight
With over 600 voices contributing their ideas
the Woodcroft Dog Park is the community’s collective vision brought to life
Supported by a $500,000 grant from the state government and following extensive consultations last year
Although the park faced a few with setbacks
because of unauthorised entry that required repairs to hydroseeded areas
the space is officially set to open in spring this year
The delay is to ensure the park’s long-term sustainability
allowing enough time for the grass and vegetation to properly take root
The new Woodcroft Dog Park will join three three other dedicated off-leash parks in the City of Onkaparinga

Designer Nina Woodcroft has created an energy-efficient family home that is also a useful conversation starter
which is covered with unusual and striking cork insulation panels
it is not only a common occurrence but is welcomed
The conversations may start with curiosity but much of the time lead to lengthy
passionate discussions on how to make homes more energy efficient
“We are new to the neighbourhood and it has been a really nice way to engage with our new community
A lot of delivery drivers will be like: ‘What’s this?’
and we’ll have a chat for 10 minutes about cork
The house was a “leaky” 1970s property built originally as a clergy house
decided that instead of an extension they would design a renovation
View image in fullscreenTo maximise the pump’s efficiency the radiators downstairs were stripped out and replaced with underfloor heating
Photograph: French+Tye“Our architect was saying that it was unusual the way we’ve decided to spend our budget
let’s add another floor or let’s do a side return
but the motivator for us was to make what we have already future proof and really efficient,” says Woodcroft
They chose dark expanded cork, an increasingly popular building material
to cover the exterior of the house because of its insulating properties
“The way that it’s manufactured is cork granules
bits of the bark of the cork oak tree are heated and pressed into a panel at the same time
which is what sticks those cork granules together
And that’s what makes that product really natural,” says Woodcroft
The inside of the property, designed with running children in mind, is as thought through as the property’s exterior, with joinery made from local and reclaimed timbers, kitchen countertops constructed from recycled plastic and a kitchen island formed from a London plane tree that was felled in Soho Square by Westminster council
“I feel grounded and connected in this house because of the natural materials I think
like a little retreat from the busy world outside,” says Woodcroft
The design company was born out of Woodcroft’s frustration with the lack of care for the environmental impact of materials used in the design industry
Nina’s House is the latest in a string of projects by Nina+Co to transform property interiors into sensual
textured spaces with a minimal environmental impact
such as the interiors for the restaurant Silo in Hackney Wick
the world’s first zero-waste restaurant and winner of a Michelin green star
mycelium (a biodegradable fungal material)

Photograph: French+TyeWoodcroft says: “I am kind of always thinking about what life this [material] is going to have next: a restaurant
a home … it will have a certain lifespan that’s actually not very long in the grand scheme of things of the planet
And so I’m always trying to think what’s the next life of this and how to retain longevity and value in something.”
She hopes her renovation will inspire others to be more conscious of the types of materials used in property design and take small steps to make their homes more sustainable and energy efficient
“I’m really up for sharing knowledge with people … Not everyone will have the financial resources to do a project like this
or the time and the energy because they’re busy with work and just need to pick a floor … but if it can inspire just doing one little thing

PRAGUE -- Jay Woodcroft and Todd McLellan made the trip to Prague for the 2024 NHL Global Series Czechia presented by Fastenal to give back to the game that has given them so much
who each coached in the NHL as recently as last season
were the guest speakers at the NHL Coaching Clinic at O2 Arena on Thursday
theories and some X's and O's to a melting pot of 350 Czech coaches
"They have their national team coaches here
all the way down to mites and squirts coaches," Woodcroft said
but the biggest thing is they're hockey people that are committed to being the best that they can be
They're continuous learners that are trying to pick something up from some NHL coaches
The hook for the clinic is the Global Series
to be played this weekend at O2 Arena with the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres opening the NHL regular season Friday (1 p.m
This year's clinic was the 26th the NHL has run since the Global Series began in 2017 and has taken place in 14 cities across seven countries
McLellan coached 1,144 NHL games with the San Jose Sharks
Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings from 2008-24 and was fired by the Kings 48 games into last season
He previously was an assistant with the Detroit Red Wings
Woodcroft coached 133 games with the Oilers from 2021-24 and was fired after 13 games last season
Woodcroft previously was an assistant under McLellan in San Jose and they worked on the same staff in Detroit in 2008
you're so wrapped up in what you're doing for your team and trying to win," McLellan said
"This is my first opportunity to not have the stress or pressure of training camp and the season and everything else that's in front of you
"I'm at that stage now where I have to give back and try to share with other coaches
and that can be anywhere from Prague to Saskatoon to Toronto
I have the luxury of time right now and I'm going to use it to give back as much as I can."
McLellan and Woodcroft were tasked with giving two presentations each
they each talked about career paths and coach development from different vantage points
Woodcroft presented on his experience of receiving the call to be an NHL head coach
"For me it wasn't just about those 36 hours or that 36-hour sprint
it was more about the 17 years of coaching that I put in to get to that point to be ready," Woodcroft said
McLellan presented a survey he did with various decision-makers in the game about how to advance to the next level
the coaches went the technical route and used some video
McLellan did a power play presentation and Woodcroft went into a deep dive on face-offs
"One thing we've told the coaches is these are just ideas
it doesn't mean that we're right or we're wrong," Woodcroft said
"It's just that through experience we've built a belief system and we're sharing it here today with this group."
"It's great for me as a hockey coach to see and to feel the NHL level here in Prague," said Vojtech Fiala
"The presentations were great and it's inspiring for me to hear the stories of how things go in the major leagues
those things from people who are pretty connected with hockey
It's such great inspiration for me and it gives me new knowledge
I'll try to maybe bring some of it to my team too."
McLellan said he even told the coaches in the clinic that they too could have a future in the NHL
the next Scotty Bowman could be sitting here in Prague today and starting out by coaching a 12-year-old team and working his or her way up," he said
"The runway is pretty long then and you've got a significant path or journey in front of you
You can see that from the group here in Prague
It's significant and it's not a surprise that the Czech national programs are doing well because the passion starts at the grassroots level."

The Weather Channel is the world's most accurate forecaster according to ForecastWatch, Global and Regional Weather Forecast Accuracy Overview
Jay Woodcroft has kept a low profile since the Edmonton Oilers fired him as head coach last season
There isn’t much currency in being in the media spotlight when the team that fired you is in the midst of a trip to the Stanley Cup Final
is that he didn’t see any value in defending his brand
Woodcroft went under the radar over the past 11 months and used the period to decompress and delve deeper into ways to better himself for the next opportunity
“I’ve thrown myself into my personal development,” Woodcroft told The Athletic. “So what does that look like? For me, it starts with family. Having this time has allowed me to be fully present for my wife and kids and take full advantage of the everyday moments that, during the course of a regular NHL season and playoff run
“The second thing for me about how I’ve tried to use this time to my benefit
There’s things as a coach that you think about over the years and you’re certainly intuitive about certain types of things
but when you study behavior properly and you’re thinking about how best to leverage people’s strengths
I think that gives you a leg up when the time comes when it’s your next opportunity.”
That next opportunity almost came in the offseason, per league sources. The 48-year-old Toronto native interviewed multiple times with the New Jersey Devils and was a finalist for the job that ultimately went to Sheldon Keefe. He was also the No. 2 choice for the Columbus Blue Jackets
he said the interview process has been positive
was informative and made me think about what my core beliefs were,” he said
“It made me be able to articulate what was most important to me as a coach
… I hadn’t had that (head-coach interview) experience very much in my career
so yeah it made me better for opportunities going forward.”
it is somewhat unusual for a coach to stay in the market after being fired
The last thing you want is to be surrounded by reminders of the team that let you go
But Woodcroft and his wife decided it didn’t make sense to move their twin 10-year-old girls twice when the next NHL gig came
so Edmonton remains home until further notice
And it’s been fine despite the awkward reality of walking the streets with fans of your former team
“I have a great relationship with the community,” Woodcroft said
A lot of her family is still around the city
The fan base has always treated me like gold.”
They did escape in the summer to Ontario cottage country
But he’s eager to get going again in the NHL
Woodcroft had no real previous relationship with Tortorella
but they started chatting as he reached out to peers to pick brains and seek advice over the past year
“John Tortorella was nice enough to ask me if I wanted to watch a couple of his practices,” Woodcroft said
“The benefit of doing that was seeing how somebody else does something
… He is legendary for having these ultra-difficult-but-highly-productive training camps
“To go there and just watch how he went about his business and how his team went about its business
Here he was watching another team’s practice from the stands
someone who is committed to being the best he can be on a daily basis
I think it’s important to pay attention to different things,” he said
“I had numerous calls with different mentors around the league — people that are in my orbit
but also with people that aren’t in my orbit.”
Don’t get it wrong: Woodcroft wants to grow
but he doesn’t seem to have lost any confidence
It’s one thing I’ve always been intrigued by in 30 years covering the NHL: the balance for a coach between needing to have the ego to lead a group of pro athletes and face cameras every day while also needing to have the humility to self-reflect and self-diagnose what’s working and what’s not
“I spent nine great years in Edmonton’s organization,” Woodcroft added with emphasis
“I wore every hat that I was asked to wear along the way
from assistant coach to head coach in the American League to head coach in the National Hockey League
I’m proud of the players and teams I was able to work with
“But I’m probably most proud of the relationships I built and continue to maintain with players and certain staff
Having that ability to go in there and push players to areas that they had never experienced before
having helped lay the building blocks as a team that’s trying to take the next step — those are all things that I take from that experience.”
And has Woodcroft re-lived those final days as Oilers head coach just before getting fired with a 3-9-1 2023-24 record
You’re able to look back at it through a different lens.”
But he’s certainly proud of the work he did before that
including getting the Oilers into the playoffs in 2021-22 after taking over as head coach in-season
The Oilers under Woodcroft lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champion in back-to-back postseasons before digging the hole last season that led to his exit
you have to wonder whether he could have gotten the Oilers out of the abyss if he stayed on
my belief was that the more we could get the group to focus
the more likely we were going to be able to break through the early doldrums of the season,” he said
“There were a lot of things being done correctly
We were generating numerous chances but had a tough time converting
but what we did seemed to be going in our net
it’s the job of coaches in that time to get the group to focus and find a way to break through
And I felt that the group was coming out of that.”
He didn’t get the chance to see it through
And it’s pretty hard to argue with what Kris Knoblauch did once he took over
It was by any measure a spectacular turnaround under Knoblauch
I felt we were 90 percent there,” Woodcroft said
“I felt the team was really ready to take a step
but I saw lots of good things from a lot of good people
The team ended up going on to do some good things
That’s a credit to all those players and staff who were able to get it done.”
All of which was said without a hint of bitterness
He prefers to focus on all the positives from nine years in the Oilers organization
All has been quiet around the Chicago Blackhawks’ coaching search
Something usually leaks in coaching searches and it hasn’t with the Blackhawks
There is some speculation that general manager Kyle Davidson is either taking his time setting up interviews or has already zeroed in on his candidate(s)
When Davidson last spoke to the media April 17
but he also didn’t provide much in details
“We’ve thought about that quite a bit,” Davidson said of the search
I think it’s just kind of getting a feel for different candidates and different people we’ll want to talk to and make sure we feel good
then we’ll see who that next head coach is
whether it’s Anders (Sörensen) or an external candidate
something we think about all the time and talk about quite a bit
who could be in the mix for the Blackhawks’ position
Sullivan’s unexpected parting with the Pittsburgh Penguins could present the Blackhawks with a new candidate for the top of their list
Sullivan has exactly the type of NHL experience and winning background the Blackhawks are looking for in their next head coach
Sidney Crosby’s long-time coach could be a good fit for Connor Bedard
The Blackhawks do have a connection to Sullivan
Blackhawks associate general manager Norm Maciver was once Sullivan’s assistant coach with the Boston Bruins
Sullivan will have plenty of other teams after him
The assumption was that he wouldn’t be available after this season
It could come down to what Sullivan wants in his next job
After a few trying years with the Penguins
is he seeking to find a team that can win quickly again
who are young and building and could still be a few years away
The Blackhawks will probably make their pitch soon
coaching in just 51 games during the 2014-15 season
but he has had a ton of success in the AHL as a head coach and spent time as an assistant in the NHL
He’s someone who probably will get another NHL look at some point
The success of Spencer Carbery in Washington (and even Ryan Warsofsky in San Jose) could inspire NHL front offices to look closely at the AHL for the next up-and-coming coach
Nelson helped rebuild Connor McMichael’s game in Hershey and has coached three Calder Cup championships
What stands out about Nelson is his ability to adapt his coaching style to his surroundings and that he encourages his team to play to its offensive strengths as long as it can play a defensively responsible game
That should appeal to a Blackhawks team with high-end offensive talent and serious defensive issues
Carle isn’t the only college coach who might get a few phone calls from NHL teams
Pandolfo doesn’t have the national championship that Carle has
but he has been consistently successful at Boston University since taking over the program in 2022
The Terriers reached the Frozen Four for the last three seasons
which included losing in the championship game this season
first in player development and then as an assistant for five seasons
there is an assumption that it would take something significant for Pandolfo to leave Boston University
He’s got the program rolling and continues to attract top talent
Shaw may have minimal head-coaching experience
but he has made a name for himself as an expert assistant and associate coach
Some coaches are built for assistant jobs — their handle on the tactical side of the game translates better in that role versus a head-coaching position. But Shaw looks ready for the next step, thanks to his strategic thinking and communication
Just how much does experience matter in the Blackhawks’ coaching search
That may determine whether Leach is on management’s radar
Leach was promoted to head coach of the Penguins’ AHL affiliate
after Mike Sullivan got the bump to the big club in 2015
Then he spent five years as head coach of the Bruins’ AHL affiliate in Providence
But his NHL resume is primarily in an assistant capacity
Leach was a part of the Seattle Kraken’s inaugural coaching staff
where he helped build a solid defense of misfit Seattle defenders
who emerged as a top-pair defender with his new team
That defensive strength helped Seattle reach the playoffs in Year 2
But after changes behind the bench last offseason
Leach moved back to Boston — this time as an assistant under Jim Montgomery
He stayed on staff after the Montgomery dismissal and worked under Joe Sacco the rest of the year
His defensive acumen and ability to communicate with young players are a plus for a rebuilding team such as Chicago
Leach is the kind of coach who can grow with a team
but sometimes teams prefer certainty over potential
Sörensen will be considered after being the Blackhawks’ interim coach for 56 games
His interim run probably didn’t go as well as he and Davidson had hoped
The Blackhawks were better in some areas under him
giving him a slightly better points percentage than Luke Richardson
The Blackhawks’ young players did seem to like playing for him and had stretches where they performed well under him
“I thought he did a really nice job,” Davidson said after the season
A little bit of a team that was obviously struggling
We’re transitioning from an extremely veteran roster at the start of the year — it didn’t work
it didn’t click — and as we went on with the season
there was a transition to much younger players and a much younger roster and giving some exposure and experience to some younger players
That transition in itself is not easy for any team or any coach
but especially for one coming in partway through and has to deal with that and coach through that
That’s something I think he did quite well
“We saw some ups and downs in his time as the coach over the last year
I think the one thing is we really finished off strong
The young players in particular seemed to really find their footing towards the end
I thought he did a really nice job in a tough spot.”
Sörensen might not be the Blackhawks’ top target in their search
but he’s probably ahead of a lot of people
If the Blackhawks don’t hit on someone they really want
he could still grow into the position or the Blackhawks could go looking for someone else down the line
the question is whether the Blackhawks would hire an AHL coach over Sörensen
Nelson has some NHL head-coaching experience and Sturm has been an NHL assistant
but their current position is the same as where Sörensen was
has a different coaching background from the other candidates in that he began coaching in his native Germany and then worked his way over to North America
He was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings for four seasons and has been the AHL head coach of their affiliate
He has received some NHL head coaching bites already
He was among the candidates for San Jose last year
Tocchet’s availability depends on how the situation with Vancouver unfolds
The Canucks did not exercise a one-year option on his deal and are instead looking to sign their head coach to a new contract
If the two sides can’t come to an agreement
then teams with vacancies can try to sign him
Tocchet gets credit for fueling the Canucks’ turnaround
Vancouver was one of the best regular-season teams in 2023-24 and made it two rounds in the 2024 postseason
The question is how much the coach deserves credit in this instance
especially after a total collapse this season
The Canucks’ power-play scoring and goaltending did a lot of the heavy lifting last year
but the team did improve defensively as the season went on
This year’s fiasco in Vancouver does hurt his stock
While he shouldn’t shoulder all of the blame for the Canucks’ shortcomings
his role as head coach is more as a manager of the room than tactician
Should the Blackhawks chalk that up to a management and roster issue
If Chicago’s management feels it’s the former
his leadership could get this team going after a disappointing season
But the key to his success may depend on who he surrounds himself with on the bench
Woodcroft might be the most intriguing candidate with NHL experience
There’s sort of an unknown about him as a coach
He coached only one full NHL season with the Edmonton Oilers
but his resume is solid with a .643 points percentage in 133 regular-season games and 14 wins in 28 playoff games
He was fired by the Oilers after 13 games in the 2023-24 season when he started 3-9-1
Woodcroft helped channel the best that the Oilers had to offer in 2022-23
But after losing to Vegas in Round 2 of the 2023 playoffs
the coaching staff decided to shake up the team’s defensive tactics and shift from man-on-man coverage to zone defense — and that is where trouble started
Woodcroft and his staff struggled to employ that strategy
Management didn’t tweak the roster to fit those tactical changes
It allows them to get a better perspective of what works around the NHL (and elsewhere) and reflect on what went wrong in their last experience
versus a coach who gets dismissed from one gig and hired to another days later
(Note: This section was published before the news that Carle is no longer a candidate for the Blackhawks coaching job
It appears below as it did before the news broke.)
Carle is the hottest name on the coaching circuit
Between his success at the college level with Denver and internationally at the World Junior Championship with Team USA
the 35-year-old Carle has created a lot of hype around his potential in the NHL
The thought is that Carle could be the ideal coach for an up-and-coming team such as the Blackhawks
as he could potentially marry development and winning
The Blackhawks have spent plenty of time watching Carle’s teams in action the past few years
Something that helped Thompson in his development was Carle’s emphasis on one-timers
Carle found that a majority of goals are scored from one-timers and made that a priority in practice
Another Carle coaching philosophy is winning at least three of the following categories in every game: the special teams battle
winning 55 percent or more of the faceoffs
taking zero bad or undisciplined penalties and winning the net-front battle
the Blackhawks likely have to commit plenty of money and term
Any coach coming into Chicago will want that security
knowing it could be at least a few seasons before the Blackhawks turn the corner
Carle has already proved he isn’t leaving Denver for just any NHL job
He has to really believe it is what’s best for him
The Blackhawks are going to have to sell him
(Top photo of Mike Sullivan: Bruce Bennett / Getty Images)
If Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson had waited until the offseason to part ways with coach Luke Richardson
Anders Sorensen may have never gotten a look at the job
Davidson wouldn’t be hiring an interim coach for next season and likely wouldn’t be willing to take a risk on another person with no NHL head coaching experience. He’d be searching for more certainty. But because Davidson fired Richardson when he did
Sorensen essentially has been given a 56-game trial to prove himself
and Davidson’s decision to promote him reflects that
Sorensen wasn’t the obvious choice to be promoted; Derek King was
He was the Blackhawks’ interim coach when Davidson fired Jeremy Colliton
Sorensen even had been King’s assistant once in Rockford
So for Davidson to bypass King and go to Sorensen
here are 10 candidates (in no particular order) Davidson could explore hiring after the season
Or does the fact that the Oilers were a ready-made contender make him an awkward fit for a team that’s still focused on development
and has a history of building well-structured
but he’s likely better off with a veteran team than the youth-oriented team the Blackhawks are likely to have next season
Quinn’s NHL resume is pretty underwhelming, as he failed to make the playoffs in all five of his seasons with the Rangers and Sharks. But once you have an NHL job, you always have an NHL job, it seems. Quinn’s success at Boston University still catches the eyes of NHL GMs, and depending on how this season goes with the Penguins
who won the AHL’s Calder Cup in his first season as head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins
knows all about long-term rebuilds and how frustrating they can be
He was behind the bench in Detroit from 2015-22
ending that seven-year run with six straight seasons out of the playoffs
He’s spent the last three seasons as an assistant under Cooper in Tampa Bay
if not exactly the most enticing track record
He’s another coach whose lack of NHL experience should give the Blackhawks pause
but what he’s accomplished in Hershey is tough to ignore
Leach is one of those assistants who seems destined to become a head coach sooner than later — much like Richardson when the Blackhawks hired him
first with Jim Montgomery and now with Joe Sacco
unless Sorensen is so impressive for the rest of this season that he forces Davidson’s hand
it’s unlikely the GM will take another chance on a first-time head coach
but if you’re looking for a guy to get offensive players such as Bedard going
few have a better track record than Boudreau
At least it’d be guaranteed to be entertaining

Woodcroft Library, in collaboration with the University of Adelaide, is making significant strides in fostering young minds down south, thanks to the popular Children’s University initiative
the extra-curricular ‘passport to learning’ program is more than just an educational venture; it's an effort to instill a love for learning
resilience and a sense of belonging among youth in the City of Onkaparinga
Woodcroft Library recognised a gap—many local children were missing out on valuable learning opportunities and struggling with resilience in conventional academic settings
This insight led to the library's involvement
transforming it into an accessible learning hub for all children and representing a groundbreaking shift to a more inclusive
the library became a fully accredited student hub by 2016
It was the first library in the state to become involved in this innovative program
broadening its impact and bringing together a diverse mix of children from various schools and backgrounds
The initiative sees children engaging in extra-curricular activities
earning credits in a passport style system that’s based on hours spent across diverse learning experiences
ranging from practical and hands-on to more community-based
This melting pot of learning activity allows for a broader exchange of ideas and perspectives
and underpins a holistic approach to education
To celebrate the achievements and personal growth of each child
the program concludes with a graduation ceremony each year
Alumni are encouraged to volunteer with the program
as part of an additional ‘passport to volunteering’ initiative
This not only aims to provide graduates with an ongoing supportive and nurturing space
but also helps cultivate a volunteering mindset within the community
"Our goal was to ensure that every child in our community had equal access to the enriching experiences of the Children's University initiative
regardless of their school's participation,” Angela said
we've witnessed tremendous growth in the kids' confidence
and get a real sense of pride when they’re celebrated for their achievements
“Seeing kids from different backgrounds come together
learn from each other and grow is our biggest reward
and evidence of the program's success.”
Both current and previous participants agree
"I love being part of the Children’s University
and made new friends from different schools
It’s fun graduating at Bonython Hall and getting to wear a robe and hat too—I felt very proud,” she said
a previous graduate who has gone on to obtain his advanced diploma in interior design and runs his own business
directly attributes his academic direction to his experiences in the program
“Children’s University at Woodcroft Library was absolutely pivotal for me
It was a community that embraced every child regardless of background
and believed in our potential,” James said
Children’s University gave me an avenue to connect with other kids
it built my confidence and helped me develop an interest in subjects that otherwise wouldn’t have appealed to me
“Being exposed to a wide range of passionate individuals meant I was not only able to learn with enthusiasm
but am now able to pass this passion onto the next generation of kids coming through
instilled in me the belief I could go on to pursue the career of my choice
and now offers many opportunities to volunteer within the community—something I love to do."
The City of Onkaparinga continues to be a steadfast supporter of this valuable initiative as 2023 sees the University of Adelaide celebrate its 10th successful year
“The council’s commitment is testament to the program's value in building a resilient
well-rounded future generation in our region,” Angela said
“It’s far more than a simple funding matter; it's a reflection of their dedication to see the program flourish and nurture the potential of every child
The council's support allows us to reach and engage more young minds within our southern community.”

The City of Onkaparinga’s first Library of Things will be launched at Woodcroft Library on Thursday 8 February
Consider all those pesky products you might need for one-off jobs but that you’ll rarely use afterwards—think baking and party items
Perhaps you even need a chocolate fountain or pond dipping net
The Library of Things will allow those aged 18+ to—using a Libraries SA library card—borrow up to four of these “things” for free for up to two-weeks
rather than spending your hard-earned cash (only for the items to be tucked away in your cupboard for years afterwards)
You could even borrow items to try them before seeing whether to purchase them elsewhere
The aim of the Library of Things is to encourage sustainable living and promote a circular economy by promoting reuse and reducing waste
The huge range of items on offer was selected following a survey by the team at nearby Aberfoyle Repair Café
who had already asked the community for feedback on what items they’d like to borrow at a new new Tool Library initiative nearby
The Onkaparinga team used the survey results to create its shopping list of ‘things’
excluding power tools so as not to double-up on what’s offered locally
Items in the Library of Things will be browsable via the library catalogue
though you won’t be able to reserve items
ensuring as many people as possible can enjoy the collection
Residents are encouraged to come in and have a browse during Woodcroft Library opening hours where you can borrow and return the items (though not through the after-hours return chute)
Suggestions for new items are welcome and the council will reach out to the community in a year’s time during the evaluation process to see what else would be useful in the collection
Donations (electrical items won’t be accepted) will be considered on a case-by-case basis
so please chat to a Woodcroft Library staff member
Woodcroft Library was selected as the ideal location because it’s within Woodcroft Community Centre, which doubles as the council’s northern green hub demonstration site
The green hub showcases the type of building upgrades and systems that residents and businesses can put in place to reduce energy and water consumption
waste to landfill and greenhouse gas emissions
The Library of Things follows the recent launch of a seed library at Woodcroft Library and the Willunga Environment Centre
After the former Community Centre was deliberately burnt down in 2015
the newly created City Architect’s Office took the opportunity to build a centre exemplifying its vision for community centres as places of lifelong learning
Ambitions for the centre included an increased capacity and flexibility of spaces and for its architecture to galvanise civic pride
The brief to Carter Williamson called for:
- A robust, fire-proof building- Flexible spaces for differentiating groups at once- Iconic design, a civic landmark within the residential area- Greater connection to Woodcroft Lake and Parklands- A backdrop and facilities hub for the annual Woodcroft Festival
© Brett BoardmanNaturally, sustainability was paramount to the design, the centre featuring Solar orientation & cross ventilation for natural lighting & cooling, whilst north-facing PV array powers the centre to standby mode.Rainwater is stored in 50,000-litre underground tanks, the centre relying less on natural resources.
which aids in its goal to galvanise and bring together local communities
whilst not negatively impacting surrounding residents
It’s clear Woodcroft Neighbourhood Centre has succeeded

A Brisbane startup company founded on University of Queensland technology to monitor the health of electricity network transformers has been acquired by French multinational Schneider Electric in a multi-million-dollar deal
The sensor technology was licensed to Aurtra in 2017 by UQ commercialisation company, UniQuest
Aurtra CEO and co-founder Terry Woodcroft said the company quickly expanded into 16 countries
“The key was the combination of available capital and software architecture that facilitated ease of product roll-out and support and a unique product that delivered a strong return to the customer,” she said
“It was during this expansion that Aurtra came to the attention of Schneider Electric.”
UniQuest CEO Dr Dean Moss said Aurtra’s acquisition
just five years after the company was founded
“It is remarkable that within five years Aurtra has managed to in-licence the intellectual property from UQ
build a successful company with global sales
“The remote sensing market is estimated to be worth up to US$2.5 billion and the technology is highly valued by asset managers as a way of undertaking preventative maintenance or controlled shutdowns.”
Aurtra’s technology provides automated online reports to electricity distributors of a transformer’s condition
and any probability of failure ahead of time
Ms Woodcroft said the company initially collaborated with major electricity distribution companies in Australia to develop an economical way of monitoring the health of a large and ageing network
“This transaction just would not have occurred without grant funding from both state and federal governments
including vital seed money from the founders and a Brisbane-based family business
Aurtra raised investment capital from UniSeed
Sydney and Brisbane Angels and a team of high-net-worth investors
Dr Moss said Aurtra was one of many IT-based startups founded on licensed IP developed by UQ researchers and commercialised by UniQuest
UQ associated startups such as Movus Fit Machine (iLab)
which provides real-time machine health monitoring
or state estimation software such as GridQube (UniQuest)
and machine-intelligent testing software like Turbine Machine Genes (iLab)
are already emerging players in this space

as Todd McLellan took over from the fired Derek Lalonde in Detroit
The Edmonton Oilers found themselves in the news in a manner of speaking during the Christmas holidays, even though they were enjoying a five-day break between games. That's because one of their former head coaches found himself with a new gig
Almost as a side note but also just as interesting, was that among those beaten out by McLellan for the job with the Red Wings, was another former Oilers head coach. As previously reported by The Fourth Period, Jay Woodcroft was apparently also in the running for the position in Detroit
This isn't the first time Woodcroft has been speculated to have missed out on an NHL head coaching opportunity since being fired by the Oilers. As we previously wrote
Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun suggested last December
that the 48-year-old could be the choice to replace D.J
it was Travis Green who took as the next permanent head coach of the Senators
And while it was never officially confirmed that Woodcroft had a chance at the job
it does bring to mind why he is still on the outside looking in when it come to the NHL
more than a year after being fired by the Oilers
Well, Jason Gregor of Sports 1440 has a theory, which he shared during this past Friday's edition of his popular show
Gregor also pointed to some of Woodcroft's decisions in the 2022-23 second round playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights
which ultimately cost the Oilers against the eventual Stanley Cup champions
He additionally commented on the penalty kill not being particularly great in general
during the Toronto native's tenure in Edmonton
and we can appreciate why certain critics would compare Woodcroft to Knoblauch
who came in and subsequently led the Oilers to their first Stanley Cup Final since 2005-06
It also didn't help that Woodcroft's time ended due to a terrible start to the 2023-24 campaign
with a franchise-worst 2-9-1 record through the opening 12 games
It is noticeable that the Oilers also suffered through a poor start this season under Knoblauch
while we would contend he is indeed a better head coach that Woodcroft
this still doesn't totally explain why the latter hasn't gotten another chance yet in the NHL
It should be noted that for the majority of his time in Edmonton
He led them to their first 50-win regular season since 1986-87
and produced an NHL-record 32.4 percent efficiency on the power play
As we wrote just prior to the Oilers' firing Woodcroft
we believed he was extremely unlucky to be in such a tenuous position
even allowing for his relatively short time as head coach in Edmonton
he is second in team history in winning percentage among head coaches (behind only Knoblauch)
albeit backed up by extensive knowledge about
no matter how close this theory may or may not be to the truth
ultimately Woodcroft will get another chance at some point in the NHL
but it's just a matter of having to be patient in the meantime

Warren Foegele comes back to haunt the Oilers as Kings win
Jay Woodcroft has been passed over for other head coach jobs
and an Edmonton-based sports media host has a theory as to why
Former Edmonton Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft has had a lot of time to reflect on his last days behind an NHL bench
Woodcroft was heading into his second full season as head coach of the Oilers in 2023-24 after taking over from Dave Tippett on Feb
After losing in the playoffs two years in a row to the eventual Stanley Cup champions (Colorado in 2022 and Vegas in 2023)
Edmonton was armed with championship aspirations and something to prove
Instead, the Oilers went 3-9-1 in their first 13 games and Woodcroft was fired and replaced by Kris Knoblauch. Edmonton then completely turned their season around under Knoblauch, making it to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals before losing to the Florida Panthers
“As the coach at the time, I felt we were 90 percent there,” Woodcroft told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun in an interview published to The Athletic Monday
In the 11 months since being fired, Woodcroft has kept himself busy, spending time with family, coaching with Team Canada at the 2024 World Championships, going to Prague with the NHL Coaches’ Association during the Global Series, and attending Philadelphia Flyers training camp at the invitation of John Tortorella
“I’ve thrown myself into my personal development,” Woodcroft said
Having this time has allowed me to be fully present for my wife and kids and take full advantage of the everyday moments that
during the course of a regular NHL season and playoff run
LeBrun reports that Woodcroft interviewed with the New Jersey Devils multiple times before the job was given to Sheldon Keefe and that he was the second choice behind Dean Evason for the head coaching gig in Columbus
Woodcroft spent nine years with the Oilers organization
including with the big club and the team’s AHL affiliate the Bakersfield Condors
While he can acknowledge now what he would’ve done differently with the Oilers

officially opening its doors with an Open Day event on Saturday

do you love martabak that spongey sweet Indonesian sandwich cake with a delicious range of fillings
Or a savoury one filled with ramen and sausage
"They've got charcoal and red velvet martabak!"
A martabak is sometimes referred to as an Asian pancake
and the ones at Martabak 109 are specifically Indonesian martabaks
Savoury martabaks are enclosed in a thin dough
like a stuffed roti and don't really resemble pancakes while Martabak Manis aka sweet ones are like a pancake sandwich crossed with a crumpet
Lenny Kenio and her husband William Tan are the couple behind Martabak 109
He was a chef but gave it up two years ago for this Martabak business
Her parents have restaurants back in West Java
Customers order their martabak and pick up their takeaway martabak from their home in Woodcroft near Blacktown
Laura and I were heading out to Bankstown for lunch and decided that we were going to give the martabak a go since we were in the area
To order martabak with Martabak109 you need to message them your order via WhatsApp (texts don't get answered I learned that the hard way so it's WhatsApp or nothing)
Lenny is always friendly and responds quickly
She has sweet and savoury martabak on offer
Savoury ones come with four fillings: chicken curry
minced beef or corned beef with the option of melted mozzarella cheese on top
With sweet martabak there's a lot of choice
Then pick your filling and these range from cheese aka Kraft cheddar cheese to Lotus Biscoff & Cream Cheese, Cheese & Oreo, Cheese Milo & Peanuts
Chocolate & Peanuts & Condensed milk
Banana + Chocolate + Cheese & Condensed milk
Cream Cheese & Banana & Kiwi & Condensed milk or the Complete All in one filling with Peanuts + Chocolate + Sesame Seed & Cheese & Condensed milk
You text them what you want one day in advance and pay by bank transfer. When we go to pick up our martabak she hands us some extra dumplings and offers us a cool respite inside with a cold drink. We demur as we are planning to go to a nearby park to photograph and try our martabak. Then she comes running out holding a container of noodles and soup and says that a customer didn't pick these up so would we like them
Normally martabaks are enormous and weigh over a kilo
But Lenny had offered to make our sweet martabaks in a smaller pan which she usually doesn't do but she wants us to try as many flavours as possible
put out a tablecloth and eat at the shaded picnic tables
There are two types of savoury martabak and this one is deep fried with a crisp
thin dough on the outside and plenty of ramen and a generous amount of sausage inside
shallot and onion filling and we added melted mozzarella on top
Both of them are generously filled and delicious
They both come with crunchy sweet and salty pickles on the side
greens and a garlicky beef meatball soup on the side
There are more mushrooms than usual as Lenny explains that the person that ordered it wanted more mushrooms
The dumplings have caramelised garlic on top and are delicate little dumplings filled with jicama or white yam with dried prawns
Even the smaller pan makes around 600grams of martabak
I must admit that I'm more a savoury martabak person than a sweet and can only have a square of sweet martabak before I get too full
This one is an interesting one with a charcoal base
The rice gives it a nice added texture and the martabak serves as a sponge to soak up all the butter and condensed milk
We try the taro based filled with Lotus biscoff crumbs
The butter used is a Wijsman preserved Dutch butter that is a salted butter
This is my favourite one as I love biscoff cookies
The Red Velvet is a striking looking martabak filled with everything. And by everything we mean EVERYTHING like Peanuts, Chocolate, Sesame Seeds, Cheese and Condensed milk. The cheese used is a mild Kraft cheddar cheese so not overly salty like a traditional cheddar and this one has a real choco-nut vibe so it might be for people that love that chocolate nut combination
The chocolate is actually chocolate hail or sprinkles
Lastly there's a pandan martabak with cheese
condensed milk and that salted Dutch Wijsman butter
It's the simplest martabak but the filling allows the pandan flavour to shine through
the Detroit Red Wings still have a lot on the line
Playoffs are still feasible by the slimmest of margins
these somewhat meaningless games are great opportunities for players to audition for 2025-26 roles – in Detroit or elsewhere
stay up to date on the latest Red Wings news and rumors
and potential changes to the coaching staff
the Red Wings have scored 2.95 goals per game
This is only slightly up from the Derek Lalonde era (2.56).
five-on-five scoring has been a weak point for the past few seasons
I wonder if McLellan will augment the coaching staff and bring in Jay Woodcroft to help boost offensive output
The former Edmonton Oilers coach served as McLellan’s assistant for 10 seasons and will be a free agent this summer – the 2024-25 season was the last year of his deal with the Oilers
Prior to his time as McLellan’s assistant, Woodcroft served as Detroit’s video coach under Mike Babcock from 2005-2008. Clearly, there’s trust and familiarity between the two. They even hosted a coaching clinic together at the 2024 NHL Global Series in Czechia
The Red Wings desperately need to score more
will be addressed via signings and trades during the offseason
But perhaps a new voice in the room will be just as effective.
He’s overseen strong offenses in the past – with and without superstars
And Woodcroft was jettisoned from the Oilers for defensive shortcomings and goaltending issues
He could be a nice value-add for the organization
The Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes bolstered their rosters this past week
with Ivan Demidov (Canadiens) and Alexander Nikishin (Hurricanes) joining their NHL clubs for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs
Both players are highly touted prospects who dominated the KHL this season
And now they’ll finish up the 2024-25 campaign as members of playoff-bound NHL teams
Fast-forward a year – could this be the path for Dmitri Buchelnikov to join the Red Wings
The 2022 second-round pick has one more year left on his KHL contract
he’s free to sign an entry-level contract with the Red Wings.
Buchelnikov has risen from a potential hidden gem to a prospect with serious upside – he ranked fourth among all Red Wings prospects in our midseason evaluation
here’s how Buchelnikov compared to Minnesota Wild all-star Kirill Kaprizov in their respective age-21 KHL seasons:
All prospects are different and each have unique development paths
and Buchelnikov should not be viewed as the next Kaprizov
you can’t ignore how similar their numbers look at the same stage of their careers
especially when you consider Buchelnikov was the leading scorer for a team that missed the playoffs and Kaprizov’s loaded CSKA Moscow club won the Gagarin Cup
Buchelnikov’s 2025-26 season will be one to watch

After Thursday night’s loss to the Florida Panthers
coach Todd McLellan made it clear what he expects from the team in the final few games
“Individual reputations are on the line in my opinion,” McLellan told reporters
(from ‘Todd McLellan challenges Detroit Red Wings: “Individual reputations are on the line”’ – Detroit Free Press – 4/11/25) “Coaches
We talk about playing for the crest on the front
but our actions or inactions now are directly reflective of individuals.”
“You want to play a type of game that’s reflective of your individual character
You put your own personal name on the line now.”
This level of accountability is refreshing to see/hear
McLellan has high expectations for his players
Part 2 is the players following through and finishing strong
And Part 3 is McLellan and the front office making decisions based on how players wrap up the season
You need the second and third components to make a difference
something to monitor as the season concludes and we move into year-end conversations
