A primary school has slammed a P&C fundraiser held on its campus after a father wore blackface and a dreadlocked wig before winning the prize for best dressed
The man wore the offensive outfit to a '90s themed bingo night organised by the P&C committee at North Woodvale Primary School in Perth's north
The guest was seen wearing brown face paint
gold and black body suit in now-deleted photos from the event on May 25
Guests were invited to come as their favourite '90s character
with the man dressing as a member of the Jamaican bobsleigh team from the comedy Cool Runnings
The school's P&C bingo committee has been forced to apologise after the matter was brought to the attention of North Woodvale's principal
the committee said it had been 'naive' to the complex history of blackface when it heralded the father as best dressed on the night
'North Woodvale Primary School P&C bingo committee would like to own and acknowledge our mistake and our own personal naivety in not understanding the complex history of a certain costume
which we awarded best dressed male costume on the night of May 25th at our bingo fundraiser,' it said
'We sincerely apologise to the wider school and the Woodvale community for the hurt it clearly caused
We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and welcoming committee within our school and will learn from our mistakes.'
Education Department Director General Lisa Rodgers told the West Australian the incident was 'disappointing and unacceptable'.
She saaid the bingo night had been held off-site and without any staff present and did not reflect the school's culture and values.
'As soon as this matter was brought to the attention of the school principal, he immediately contacted the president of the P&C association to raise his concerns and express his disappointment,' Ms Rodgers said.
Blackface routines were common through much of the 20th century but a white person taking the stage with their skin darkened, particularly for comedic purposes, is now considered offensive in most contexts.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted North Woodvale Primary School for comment.

The speed limit along a section of Formby Bypass will be reduced
ahead of 286 new homes being built on land next to the road
Proposals have been put forward by Sefton Council to reduce the speed limit on the section between Woodvale and Freshfield from 60mph to 50mph
approval was given by Sefton Council’s Planning Committee to an application for the construction of 286 new homes after the demolition of existing structures south of RAF Woodvale between Southport Road / Southport Old Road and Wham Dyke on the west side of the A565 Formby Bypass
Due to the increased vehicle movements generated by the development
a Planning Condition was attached which required the developer to fund the introduction of a new signalled junction with pedestrian facilities and the reduction of the speed limit on the A565 Formby Bypass at this location from its current 60mph limit to a new 50mph limit in both directions
Sefton Council says the introduction of the lower speed limit will have a number of benefits including:
Safety Considerations: It will reduce the severity of potential collisions
Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety: The development will introduce increased footfall and cycle use; a lower speed limit improves safety for vulnerable road users
Junction Operation Efficiency: A 50mph limit will improve traffic signal compliance and allow safer vehicle movements north and southbound and out of the new development
National Guidance Compliance: The Department for Transport’s guidance supports lower limits where roadside development increases conflict points
The proposal change in speed limit will be applied to both north and southbound traffic
revoke the existing 60mph Speed Limit Order on the A565 Formby Bypass and introduce a new 50mph speed limit from a point 254m southwest of the southwest kerbline of the Coastal Road to the northwest kerbline of Southport Old Road (south junction) in a southbound direction and in a northbound direction between the northwest kerbline of Southport Road to a point 260m southwest of the southwest kerb line of Woodvale access road

Australian Unity Diversified Property Fund has divested Woodvale Boulevard Shopping Centre in Western Australia to a local syndicator for $36.5 million
Nigel Freshwater and Sean Flynn – said the publicised on-market campaign for the property
which houses a strong performing Woolworths supermarket
received more than 180 inquiries leading to eight formal offers
Woodvale Boulevard Shopping Centre is located on a 27,000sqm land holding in a catchment area with an average household income of $121,446 – 6.2 per cent higher than the WA average
“Western Australia’s retail investment market has shown resilience despite wider macro-economic volatility affecting other markets,” said Hatcher
“Transaction numbers in the first half of the year were nearly double the five-year historical average reflective of investor interest into the state.”
“With the cost of capital significantly rising in recent months
investors’ return hurdles have been impacted resulting in an increase in demand for higher-yielding assets

Woodvale
the Atlanta-based private equity real estate firm
has completed the purchase of four Marriott branded hotel properties across three states in the Southeast. The portfolio
represents an opportunistic addition to Woodvale’s assets under management
The acquisition closes out a fund raised in 2023 for the purpose of purchasing distressed assets in the Southeast
“We’re very excited about these acquisitions and the value they bring to our investors,” said Rahim Charania
“This fund was designed to capitalize on opportunistic pricing in a unique market environment
allowing our investors and partners to achieve exceptional returns and I feel we were able to meet those goals with this portfolio”
The debt markets have faced significant challenges in 2024
and a surge of approaching loan maturities across all asset classes
these pressures resulted in historically low transaction volumes and sharply declining valuations
creating rare opportunities for well-capitalized investors
Woodvale leveraged these market conditions to acquire the portfolio of four Marriott-branded properties in the Southeast
The broader real estate market faced significant headwinds in 2024
with many transactions falling apart due to financing constraints
Sellers frequently struggled to find reliable buyers
“Our strategy of purchasing assets all-cash proved to be instrumental
as sellers prioritized certainty of closing,” said Bashir Mansour
Vice President of Acquisitions at Woodvale
“By staying well-capitalized and maintaining an aggressive acquisition approach
we secured favorable pricing while providing sellers with the confidence they needed—a strategy that proved highly effective in this unique market environment.”
The fund’s success has positioned Woodvale to launch a follow-up fund focused on hotel and multifamily acquisitions
expected to deploy in the first half of 2025
“Building on the momentum of our first hospitality fund
we believe there is a continued opportunity to acquire high-quality assets at favorable prices,” Charania added
and we’re optimistic about the opportunities ahead.”

The report showed one-third of the 4772 suburbs analysed recorded a current median value at or above $1 million, up from a recent low of 21 per cent in January 2023 following the start of the rate-tightening cycle.
CoreLogic economist Kaytlin Ezzy said Perth came in third, with 35 new entrants and one re-entrant to the million-dollar club over the year.
It also marked the first time that unit markets in four Perth suburbs topped the million-dollar mark.
“Despite recording the highest annual rise in dwelling values among the capitals and rest of state regions, Perth’s relatively low starting point resulted in fewer new seven-figure markets compared to Sydney and Brisbane,” Ezzy said.
“At the other end of the scale are Melbourne and regional Victoria, where dwelling values fell by one per cent over the year.
“An unfavourable investment taxation environment, a higher level of new housing completions, and an above average level of advertised supply have put downwards pressure on values, resulting in fewer new million-dollar entrants in Melbourne and a net decline across Regional Victoria.”
Ezzy said it was unlikely that Perth had reached the peak in the number of million-dollar markets.
Rate cuts may be imminent. What impact will they have on Perth house prices?
Mammoth $20 million Cottesloe property poised to obliterate WA record
With listings soaring in some suburbs, has Perth’s competitive house market turned a corner?
“As of August, there are 24 suburbs with a median value above $990,000 currently recording positive quarterly value growth,” she said.
“It’s likely we’ll see a number of these markets cross the million-dollar threshold within the next few months.”
Perth led the country in value growth, with dwelling values up 24.2 per cent over the year to August.
This has resulted in a 56 per cent increase in the number of seven-figure suburbs compared to last year with 31-house and four-unit markets entered the club for the first time and one house suburb (Highgate) re-entered the club, taking the total count to 100.
Perth’s inner, north-west and south-west regions each had 26 markets with a seven-figure median value in August, while the south-east and north-east regions had 19 and three, respectively.
Mandurah is now the only SA4 region in Perth that does not have a million-dollar market.
Nine of Perth’s top 10 most expensive house markets are located in the Cottesloe–Claremont sub-region, with Dalkeith recording the highest median value at $3.5 million.
Similarly, all four of the newly minted million-dollar unit markets (Cottesloe, Crawley, Floreat, and Swanbourne) are in the exclusive beachside neighbourhood.
Despite recording the highest annual increase in values across the regional markets (up 19 per cent), regional WA saw just one house market, Dunsborough ($1.2 million), join the million dollar club, taking the total count to three.
Quindalup ($1,377,367) and Yallingup ($1,654,267) were the only other markets to record a house median above the $1 million mark.

The director of a north Belfast estate agents has said he is in "shock" after a car was rammed into his shop on Tuesday evening
Robert McDowell said tenants were left terrified upstairs in the premises after the vehicle was driven at the front of the building on Woodvale Road
Mr McDowell also said there has been protests outside the business in the days leading up to the incident based on messages spread on social media that he was "housing asylum seekers"
something he said is "100% totally untrue"
The incident happened amid a further night of violent disorder which took place across Belfast
Police confirmed six people have been arrested – including three teenage boys
Paramilitary ‘element’ suspected in latest disorder in Belfast
Mr McDowell said: "I got a phone call about quarter to 8 this evening by a member of staff
who had got a phone call to say there had been an attack at our office on the Woodvale Road
"A car had been driven into the side of the building
one of the residents up there she phoned me and told me what had happened
There had been two attempts to crash into it..
and that a crowd was gathering outside our building
"Another report told me they saw four people getting out of the car and running away and they were hooded and they ran off
"I am sitting here in shock - totally shocked to be truthful and a bit scared and very
very concerned for the people in that building this evening
"They are very worried about coming to work tomorrow
They are very worried about being in their own homes this evening
"We are a traditional estate agent we sell houses for people we let houses for landlords and we find tenants
The business has been in that area for almost 30 years
"The message seems to be that we are housing asylum seekers
We just simply cannot accept them as tenants because they do not meet the simple straightforward referencing."
The business owner explained he cannot accept illegal immigrants or asylum seekers as tenants due to the need for references and guarantors
"The idea we are letting houses to this group of people is a total nonsense
Mr McDowell went on to explain a previous demonstration outside his business and other estate agents took place last Friday
with people gathering outside the building with placards
"This was anger and frustration again about the level of immigration and particularly targeted at asylum seekers,” he added
"We got wind of that and as the group started to assemble we looked the door there were five of us inside the building and we put our shutters down
They started shouting come out and rattling the shutters
"[It] was circulating that Rea Estates are the cause of the problem in the area that we are the ones who are housing asylum seekers and illegal immigrants
"People were warning me and warning in particular the staff
We were expecting something further could happen
"You are targeting completely the wrong person.”
Mr McDowell also revealed tenants of his have started to leave Northern Ireland out of fear of being targeted, including a nurse who worked in the health service who he said is returning to India.
"There is one tenant who said he has had enough he is going back to Africa.
"I know of another family, a husband and wife and I think they had one child - who returned to India.
"She was a nurse and she left Belfast. She didn't feel safe anymore.
"Her house was targeted and a sticker put on the window which made it very clear that because of where she was born she wasn't welcome in the area. She gave up a well paid job and left.”
Mr McDowell’s urged those behind the attack to understand he and his staff are “trying to do the best for the local community”.
"I have never experienced this I have never had people working for me who are scared,” he said.
"Whoever is doing this, the chatter is wrong it is on social media but it is wrong. We are not doing what you think we do.
"What I would say to them is think about the people who work in Rea Estates who may well be your neighbours. They have kids at the same school as yours. Think of them. They are not the bad people.
"We are just a very ordinary business trying to do the best for the local community.”
Speaking about the attack on the estate agents on Wednesday morning PSNI temporary assistant chief constable Melanie Jones said: “We dealt with a report of a hijacking in the Fingal Street area of west Belfast at around 8.45pm, followed by a report that a car was deliberately driven at a business in the Woodvale Road area, causing damage to the shutters. The suspects made off from the scene.”

Jason Stefanski murdered his father and neighbour at his Woodvale home in September last year. (ABC News: Katrin Long)
Link copiedShareShare articleA Perth man with schizophrenia has been sentenced to life in jail with a 23-year minimum for "savage" and "frenzied" attacks that killed his father and a neighbour.
Jason Stefanski, 24, pleaded guilty to murdering his father Ranier, 69, and his neighbour Bill Butler, 68, in Woodvale in September 2014.
The Supreme Court was told Stefanski was in a "florid psychotic" state, caused by his undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia and his "continuous" use of cannabis in the hours before the murders.
Stefanski's lawyer, Michael Perella, said because his client did not know he was mentally ill, he was unaware that his voluntary consumption of cannabis would have the consequences it did.
Mr Perella said Stefanski was delusional and hearing voices that were telling him to hurt and kill others.
The court was told both victims were so savagely beaten that their relatives were unable to recognise them.
Stefanski killed his father first in the backyard of their home and then attacked Mr Butler when the neighbour went to help him.
Justice Stephen Hall said it was "chilling to think that the humanity that caused Mr Butler to leave the safety of his house ... was the same humanity, that put him in the position to be attacked by you".
Justice Hall said both victims were "vulnerable and defenceless" and subjected to "merciless" attacks.
The court also heard that just before the murders, when Stefanksi's mother saw him shaking and in an angry state, she made calls to a medical help line, her local doctor and family members to try to get help for him.
Justice Hall noted the role cannabis played in the murders, saying while there was a "general view" it was a "benign drug", it was well recognised it could lead to serious situations when it was used by people with schizophrenia.
After sentencing Mr Butler's sister, Kaye Sinclair, said her brother was a helpful person who "would do anything for anybody".
"To see him go like that is not good," she said.
"Hopefully one day we'll get over this and get on with our lives."
Mr Butler's wife was also in court for the sentencing, but made no comment as she left.
With time already served, Stefanski's earliest release date will be in September 2037.

A FORMER Carlton footballer from colonial days is to have a central Victorian oval named in his honour
represented Carlton in 16 matches through its premiership season of 1874 and also served the Club as a committeeman
The Australasian of June 1895 also notes that Boyle was Carlton’s first delegate to the Football Association
Boyle was one of the most important and influential Australian cricketers of the 1870s and 1880s
He represented Victoria and Australia as its 17th Test cricketer – and in 1882 at The Kennington Oval famously took the final match-winning wicket against England which led to the creation of The Ashes
The ground identified as the future Harry Boyle Oval is the Woodvale Recreation Reserve located about 14 kilometres north of Bendigo and a short drive from neighbouring Eaglehawk
The area was known as Sydney Flat at the time Boyle spent his formative years there in the 1850s and ’60s
While the oval’s genesis was undoubtedly the result of a community effort
Boyle is credited as leader of a group of youths who worked tirelessly to get the oval completed in time for the 1863 cricket season
Driving the initiative to name the oval is Matt Thompson
who relocated to the area from Melbourne some 21 years ago
Thompson learned about Boyle’s connection to the oval from Bendigo historian Peter MacIver
who is researching a proposed book about Harry Boyle
The Boyle family came to the goldfields from Sydney in 1853
Daniel had a successful spell looking for gold and later settled in Sydney Flat where he established the Australian Store/Hotel
The premises was on the main road and very close to where the oval was positioned a few years later
Shortly after Boyle’s death in December 1907
Dave Scott (Boyle’s lifelong friend and business partner) penned a memorial article for The Referee about Harry
Scott described how in 1857 or 1858 he had first heard of Boyle as “a wonderful boy cricketer whose bowling was causing great havoc amongst the stumps”
Following a successful spell playing for Sydney Flat (on the oval he helped create) Harry joined the ‘big’ club in Bendigo
Such was Boyle’s progress that in season 1865/’66 (at 19 years of age) he was selected to play for Bendigo against a strong Victorian team
Boyle took 4-11 and 4-9 with Bendigo winning by an innings and seven runs
During the off-seasons between 1872 and ’74
In July 1873 he was named by the Bendigo Advertiser in a squad of footballers selected to meet Melbourne at the Kangaroo Flat Cricket Ground
While it is not clear if Boyle turned out for that game
a report in The Australasian from July 1872 described him as exhibiting fine play in a game for Sandhurst against South Yarra
Boyle’s continued form for the BUCCs kept him on the radar of the big metropolitan teams and following a fine performance in a Colts match against a strong Melbourne CC team in the 1871—72 season he was invited to play for the East Melbourne Cricket Club by Alfred E Clarke
For a couple of years Boyle would travel to Melbourne each weekend (full expenses paid) to play for the Jolimonters
eventually becoming the third captain of the EMCC
Boyle was primarily a cricketer and one of the most important events in his cricketing life occurred just prior to his permanent move to Melbourne
In December 1873 Boyle became the first man to bowl WG Grace when he played for Victoria against the Leviathan’s touring English XI
beat the champion and clean bowled his middle stump”
Scott souvenired the ball Boyle used and it now resides in the Australian cricket museum at the MCG
Boyle’s success against Grace established him as one of Victoria’s leading bowlers
He became a regular fixture in the Victorian XI and was also a selector for many years
Between 1872 and 1888 he played for Victoria in 28 first-class matches taking 62 wickets at an average of 19.56
while with the bat he accumulated 614 runs at an average of 12.03 from 51 innings
Boyle also captained the Vics in the inter-colonial games of 1875
Boyle’s connection with the Carlton Football Club can be sourced to 1874 when he represented the senior 20 as a defender throughout the season
The newspapers were generally positive about Boyle’s play in ’74
although one report has the umpire and Boyle being ‘hooted’ at by a mob over a disallowed goal in a game against Albert Park
Boyle was supposed to have touched the ball just before it passed the goal line
It appears that Boyle stopped playing football at the top level beyond the 1874 season as his name is not recorded on team lists for the Carlton first or second 20s for competitive matches
A football first - the charging of admission at the gate - occurred on Boyle’s watch in 1875
lost his sight and use of his hands in a mining accident
Carlton and Melbourne agreed to charge patrons a cost of sixpence to view their third match of the season at the University Cricket Ground
£106 was taken at the gate and after expenses
a sum of £97 3s 4d was handed to the Jackson family
along with other monies raised in Sandhurst
enabled the family to start a small business and escape the potential of poverty due to Edward’s injury
Boyle’s last on-field involvement with the Carlton senior 20 appears to have occurred in June 1877
The following year he assisted John Conway in identifying the Victorian players for the national team which embarked on a tour of the Australian colonies
Boyle was also involved with football affairs
as Carlton’s first delegate to the Football Association
He was also a member of the football club’s committee of management in 1875
Following the successful Australian XI tour of 1878
Boyle established the Boyle and Scott’s Cricket
which hugely impacted upon Victorian and Australian Cricket in the 1880s
Boyle became one of the most famous players in the cricketing world and with the constant demands of arranging tours and touring this period appears to have marked the end of his active involvement in football - although in August 1889 he did appear in an old boy’s match for Carlton against Geelong to raise money for the Geelong Hospital
Boyle toured England with Australian cricket teams as a player in 1878
Renowned as an exceptionally accurate medium pacer with a deadly leg break
Boyle and the legendary Frederick Spofforth formed the greatest bowling combination of the age – as exemplified in 1878 when they dismissed a powerful MCC side at Lords for 33 and 19
the pair (through their bowling) were largely responsible for the famous win at Kennington Oval in 1882 which gave birth to the Ashes legend
W G Grace wrote of Boyle that he “had a rare head on his shoulders and was often successful in getting batsmen out when other bowlers equally as good had tried and completely failed”
Following the closure of Boyle and Scott in 1892 and time in Queensland and Tasmania
Boyle returned to work for the Victorian Government as Inspector of Tracks based in Walhalla
After he was retrenched from this position he became Collector for the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum
a position he filled until his death in 1907
Boyle clearly never lost his love of football and Carlton
having been released from hospital following major surgery
Boyle fronted up to the Melbourne Cricket Ground to see Jack Worrall’s Carlton overwhelm South Melbourne to secure the second of three consecutive League premierships
A number of reporters remarked favourably of his attendance on Grand Final
but barely two months later Boyle was gone
Shortly after attending the football match
Boyle travelled to Bendigo to stay with his brother-in-law for the purpose of further recuperating from the operation
He quickly relapsed and was taken to Nurse McKinnon’s Private Hospital where he died on 21 November 1907
Boyle and his wife Margaret Wilson Scott had no children
and it also appears that his two sister’s families have also died out
Boyle was descended from two first fleeters (one a convict and one a marine) and a glance at the First Fleet website indicates that there are thousands of Australians with blood connections to him
who greatly assisted in the research for this article
He assisted Richard Cashman and Ric Sissons with research for their book
Billy Murdoch: Cricketing Colossus and is currently working on a proposed book about Boyle
MacIver’s interest in Boyle stems from pieces he wrote for the Bendigo Advertiser a number of years ago
Through his research for a proposed book on Boyle
he came into contact with Matthew Thompson and informed him of the Boyle connection to the oval at Woodvale
“Matthew and I are both keen to try and gain Harry Boyle the recognition he deserves and while I have helped Matthew with information and contacted a few people the success in getting the oval renamed has been largely down to his efforts.”
Thompson’s interest in Boyle was based on his own passion for cricket
given his family connection with sports equipment manufacturer Kookaburra Sport
which was established in Melbourne by Alfred Grace (AG) Thompson in 1890
But he was mindful too of Boyle’s Carlton connection – which he hopes will stimulate further interest at a ground which has not seen a football match staged there since 1970

Resources Victoria has provided an update on the rehabilitation of the Woodvale Evaporation Ponds Complex and the Kangaroo Flat site near Bendigo
The Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) has catalogued more than 2000 drill holes and almost 1700 pallets of drill core at the Woodvale Evaporation Ponds Complex prior to transferring 223 pallets to the drill core library in Werribee for further evaluation and storage
Resources Victoria said by preserving some of these Woodvale samples that were stockpiled by the former licensee
they can be studied without further drilling required
“The drill core to be stored at the Geological Survey of Victoria’s drill core library are valuable geoscientific assets which will improve our understanding of Bendigo’s geology,” Resources Victoria chief executive officer Matt Vincent said
Stage two removal of the remaining drill core from the Woodvale site in now underway
rehabilitation works at the Kangaroo Flat continues with the tailing storage facility being covered with rock to suppress dust levels over the summer period
“The Earth Resources Regulator has permanently sealed the Swan Decline
the primary gateway to Bendigo’s historical underground mining,” Vincent said
“We’ve unearthed significant historical records and snapshots at Kangaroo Flat dating back to the 1850s and it’s great to be able to pass these on to the Bendigo Historical Society and Goldfields Library Corporation.”
GBM Gold subsidiary Kralcopic previously held mining licences around Bendigo
which included the Kangaroo Flat site and the Woodvale Evaporation Ponds Complex

Ian CallenderFri 28 Jun 2024 at 11:00It was a no-brainer that Harry Warke would captain Woodvale one day. The clue is in the surname.
Son and grandson of former Ireland captains Stephen and Larry – both Woodvale stalwarts – Harry has a lot to live up to, but even he admits that captaining the team at the top of the NCU Premier League halfway through the 2024 season is a surprise.
“After last season (when Woodvale finished 12 points adrift of eighth place with only relegated Derriaghy below them), I definitely didn’t expect to be up there,” says Harry. “But we came into this season with higher expectations.
“There is a better spirit around the club, winning obviously helps a lot, but the boys have taken more ownership, and when you perform week in, week out, it’s nice to be sitting at the top.”
The 824 club runs so far of Player of the Season Ruhan Pretorius, backed up by professional Ludwig Kaestner, have obviously been key to Woodvale’s League success in the 2024 season, but they are also in the Semi-Final of the Challenge Cup and, in the last round, they progressed without the help of their two stars.
“Ruhan and Ludwig have scored a lot of runs this year, but there have been other contributions which perhaps you don’t see in the summary scoresheets throughout the whole team,” Warke adds.
“Every team has two or three paid players, so we’re no different, and we’ve been lucky both of ours have come off.
“But in the Challenge Cup Quarter-Final against Waringstown at home, Ruhan and Ludwig only combined for 14 runs (in a total of 217).
“Waringstown are one of the strongest teams in the League, but contributions from elsewhere is how we managed to win that game, so that was the best team performance of the season.”
Woodvale were drawn away to Muckamore as they bid to reach their first Challenge Cup Final since 2000 in what Warke describes as a ‘tasty’ tie, but on Saturday, he gets the chance to size up the opposition when the League leaders travel to Moylena.
He says: “They have worked out how to play well at home, I don’t think they have lost a 50-over match there this season.
“Beating CIYMS (with a last wicket stand of 40) shows they know how to win at home, but hopefully, this Saturday, we’ll be able to gauge how best to play there and take it into the Semi-Final.
“Either way, it’s going to be tough in the Cup, no matter who wins on Saturday. We would have liked a home draw, but I’m happy enough. You have to beat everyone to win the Cup.”
Stephen Warke appeared in three consecutive Finals for Woodvale from 1998, scoring a century in the club’s last success that year before Harry was born.
Harry’s earliest memory was being taken down to the nets at Templepatrick.
“Rugby and cricket were the main sports, I played mini rugby at Ballyclare so it was natural I started at Templepatrick (based in Ballyclare),” he reflects.
“I then moved to Carrick to play with my school friends, but after I finished school, I was looking for more opportunities and Wayne Horwood got in contact and it was an easy decision to go to Woodvale and play for them, like my grandad, dad, cousins and uncles. They also had just been promoted to the Premier League.”
Taking over as captain was another natural progression as he followed in dad’s footsteps.
Warke adds: “I had always captained through age group cricket and never minded the extra pressure of captaincy, so when Jamie Gibson, after leading Woodvale for many years, wanted to step down, I was happy to put my name forward and, thankfully, in my first season, it is going well so far.
“It helped that dad knows what he is talking about, you get the odd, ‘Oh, he is Stephen’s son’, but it’s nothing that has held me back. The only pressure I get is from dad, but there are no external factors.”
Meanwhile, barely three hours of play was possible on the penultimate day of Ireland XI’s game against West Indies Academy at Stormont. There are two sessions to get a result on Friday when the tourists resume on 148 for three, still 93 behind.
On Thursday, the Irish surprisingly batted on, adding 44 runs to be all out for 441.

Officers were called to a home on Justicia Close on Saturday following reports of an altercation. (ABC News: Katrin Long)

The 69-year-old man's son now faces two murder charges over the incident, which happened at the weekend.
A 68-year-old man was killed on Saturday after an alleged fight between the man and his son.
Officers were called to a home on Justicia Close about 1:20pm (AEWT) on Saturday following reports of an altercation.
Witnesses told the ABC that a woman ran to her neighbour's house for help to break up the fight between her husband and son.
Two neighbours then rushed to the house, where they found the 69-year-old father injured.
The 68-year-old neighbour then waited for an ambulance outside the home.
Witnesses said the son chased and attacked the man in the driveway, beating him unconscious. He later died.
The father was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, but has now also died.
The man's son has been charged with two counts of murder. He is due to appear in the Stirling Garden's Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
