This deal will keep Head at Wynnum Manly until the end of the 2028 season
totalling six years in charge of the Seagulls football program
Head has lifted the professionalism at the Seagulls during his first two seasons
coming from the Dragons and Tigers NRL coaching systems
with notable changes in strength and conditioning
communication and the structure of our programs
Implementing his coaching style from the Hostplus Cup team downwards
has also seen dozens of Seagulls players sign with NRL/W clubs during this time
“It’s a proud moment for me and my family to extend my contract here at the Seagulls
and it feels like an exciting time to be at the club
I’m grateful to Wayne and the board for the opportunity
“It’s a great opportunity to solidify the changes that we’ve made to the Seagulls football program
and we will reap the rewards in the future”
The club has undergone a transition since 2023
with many high-quality staff and players recruited to the club by Head and his staff
“There’s plenty of new faces in the squad this year
and us as coaches have enjoyed working with them all during the pre-season
Now we get to kick off 2025 with Burleigh at home on Sunday
Asked whether the Seagulls can go all the way this year
Head said: “The ultimate goal of every season is to win the premiership
And we have certainly put a squad together that we think can do that
the affiliation with the Broncos helps our chances
as it does every club with their own NRL affiliate
but we are very confident in the players we have signed at the Seagulls and our goal is to win the last game of the season”
This is great news for the BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls on the eve of our first game of the season on Sunday
and provides stability for the playing and coaching groups for the year ahead

The Queensland Law Society was saddened to learn of the passing of Geoffrey Porter
“Geoff grew up with his brother Phillip in Biggenden in Central Queensland
For his secondary schooling he boarded at Scots College in Warwick
Thereafter he studied law at Queensland University
“Geoff was articled to Malcolm Thomas in Wynnum and was admitted to practise in 1973
Soon afterwards he joined in partnership with Malcolm Thomas and Keith Genninges under the name of Thomas Genninges
“I joined the firm in 1976 and became Geoff’s partner in 1980
Malcolm Thomas left the practice some years earlier and Keith Genninges retired in the early 1980s
Geoff and I remained partners until we sold the practice to ALG in 2015
that is to say we were partners for about 35 years
We changed the firm’s name to Porter Hulett in the 1990s
Geoff practised in Wynnum for his entire career
In the early years Geoff was active in the local community
Over the year he secured work for insurers and mortgage work
He was an early adopter of computer technology
“He was a valued mentor of several articled clerks and younger colleagues
putting in very long hours over many years
He was well-read and researched on a wide range of legal matters
with an impressive memory for caselaw.A rare photo of Jon and Geoff
Geoff was a fierce advocate for his clients
A somewhat brusque exterior concealed a generous and humorous character
which speaks volumes of Geoff’s commitment and steadfastness
“I know of no other practitioners who have survived 35 years together
and remained on good terms. We were very different personalities
which enabled us to navigate our partnership and careers without serious blemishes
Geoff worked as a consultant for ALG until about two years ago
when he reluctantly retired at the age of about 71
His short retirement was beset by ill health
He also lost mobility following a bad fall while holidaying in Budapest several years earlier
Geoff built a boat and enjoyed sailing it on Moreton Bay
He is survived by children Craig and Amanda

With 5 games at BMD Kougari Oval on Sunday
you’d be forgiven for thinking that we were handing out free lottery tickets
as people came from everywhere to see some high quality football
4 wins and a golden point semi final loss capped off a near-perfect day in front of a Chook Pen crowd that reinforced our home field advantage as only they can
The Wynnum Manly Juniors BRL Reserve Grade won 30-6 over Souths Magpies
the Cyril Connell Cup U17 played their semi final against Burleigh Bears
The two best teams in the South East pool were both loaded with NRL-contracted players in what promised to be an entertaining match
The Seagulls had an 18-4 lead with 14 minutes remaining before Burleigh fought back to score 3 tries in 9 minutes and flip the game
before giving away a penalty after the siren
Lachie Hooker kicked the penalty goal from the sideline in front of a rapturous crowd to send the game into golden point extra time
Burleigh scored off the back of a penalty and won the game 24-20
before going down in the semi final in golden point
with the Seagulls looking to get back in the winner’s circle after a few losses in a row
A barnstorming performance saw them run away with the game
Leading into the Hostplus Cup match between the Seagulls and Souths Magpies
both teams observed a minute’s silence in remembrance of Mitch Cronin after being led onto the field by his family
Coby Black and Blake Mozer in what was a formidable lineup
Wynnum Manly scored off the opening set after a Brendan Frei break to set up Cameron Bukowski next to the posts
The momentum continued in the Seagulls direction from that moment onwards as Souths were never really in the contest
The Magpies managed to get a couple of tries back
but the Seagulls led 24-10 heading into the break with further tries from Ron Philitoga
Beni Allen opened the scoring after the break
before Jamie Hill and Oskar Enasio also crossed the line
Ben Far sealed the outstanding performance with a double within 3 minutes
as Wynnum Manly secured a 54-20 victory over a Broncos-stacked Souths Logan Magpies team
Jock Madden kicked 9/9 conversions in a great day for the Seagulls both on and off the field
Chaz Jarvis also made his Hostplus Cup debut for the Seagulls and will feature heavily throughout the season
The team travel to Cairns to play the Northern Pride this Sunday at 2:10pm
The game can be watched for free on Kayo Freebies
The Seagulls welcomed the Souths Logan Magpies to BMD Kougari Oval on Saturday for Round 1 of the junior statewide competitions
Harvey Norman U17s were up first in the morning but came up against a tough Souths outfit
Cyril Connell Cup then came out firing and finished off a good close game against Souths
The third game of the day was Harvey Norman U19s
Then the Mal Meninga Cup teams put on an entertaining display of football for those in attendance
Then the two Hostplus Cup squads played off in a trial match consisting of 5 x 20 minute periods
This gave the two coaches a chance to rotate through their full squads after a tough preseason training block
before drawing 32-32 by the full time whistle
Plenty of lessons to take from this trial game as we get closer to a new season
our Mal Meninga Cup U19 team just fell short of finals football in 2025
with dozens of NRL-contracted players spread across different teams
our boys played admirably through a bad run of injuries
showed just how many injuries disrupted their season
the next 4 games were against the best teams in the competition
We scored a couple of important wins at the end of the season to finish 8th on the table
We look forward to welcoming back the eligible players in 2026
and aim to transition as many players as possible into our Hostplus Cup and BRL A Grade squads as their development continues at the Seagulls
Some players will make the step up to the BRL squad immediately and push for a Cup debut later in the season
Well done to Blake Trace and his coaching team for your efforts across the season
And thank you to our Academy partner McDonalds Bayside for your support of our juniors

Surprise hero Trevor Monaei notched a hat-trick to help Wynnum Manly Juniors win back-to-back BRL premierships in a thriller over West Brisbane Panthers on Saturday - completing a 'green sweep' of all three grades at Totally Workwear Stadium
The defending premiers had a disastrous start
handing the ball to West Brisbane Panthers off the kickoff
and they made the Seagulls pay through winger Jalen Reweti - against the team he won the premiership with 12 months earlier - in the ensuing set
Wynnum Manly Juniors settled into their rhythm and the big men rolled up the middle
Prop Lachlan Lee was the catalyst for a repeat set on Wests' line
of all things from a kick Kyle Van Klaveren spilled back to Lee close to the line
Jack Stafford snuck over in the corner on the back of a miracle offload from centre Trevor Monaei
A crafty sideline conversion from Toby Westcott in difficult conditions had the scores level after 20 minutes
West Brisbane returned serve when they next got the ball
through a Nathan Brown penalty goal to make 8-6
before again inviting the Seagulls deep into their territory
They took full advantage in the 26th minute down their left side once again when Monaei - who only found out on Thursday he would be playing - scored a try of his own
cleaning up a pass on the bounce from five-eighth Calum Pereira to barge over
Wynnum Manly added two points with a penalty goal in the 38th minute to take it to 14-8 before Nathan Brown added a penalty goal from 41m out right on half-time to make it 14-10
Monaei was in the action again for the Seagulls in the 47th minute
stepping of his left foot close to the line and dragging four defenders over the stripe before slamming the ball down; Westcott nailing the sideline conversion to make it 20-10
West Brisbane started chancing their arm with interchanges of passes between the forwards
but couldn't take advantage of the field position they had earned
Wynnum Manly Juniors made them pay through the rampant left side yet again in the 63rd minute as late call-up Monaei crashed over to complete an unlikely hat-trick
the 24-10 lead giving the Panthers a mountain to climb to recover
The minor premiers gave themselves hope with a try in the 69th minute to Regan Glynn following a mercurial flick pass from second rower William Toloi
then in the 76th minute Glynn broke away to set up his winger Zion Johnson and Brown converted to make it 24-20 with three minutes to go
Player of the match Monaei was surprised to even be there on grand final day
The 2023 premiership player missed multiple weeks with a knee injury and struggled to reclaim a place in a side that at one stage appeared unlikely to even make the top five
while also relying on other results to reach the postseason
before adding the four finals matches for a 10-game winning streak
"We were playing elimination games just about for the second half of the season
because we had a very poor start," Monaei said
"I wasn't even meant to be playing today mate
our fullback (Karwyn Fuller) got a head knock last week and I was lucky to be able to play
"Harro (coach Jason Harris) gave me a call and told me
we believe in you and they know what I can do and all have faith I can get the job done
We all came out here with one goal in mind
I've had things going on outside of footy and that
so I pray and have faith God has a plan for me
Monaei said never looking too far ahead was the key to the team's turnaround this year
and on grand final day threw their previous results against the Panthers out the window
taking in a game plan that started with dominating the middle
and it's thanks to them we got the job done
I was just standing on the try line and going over."
Wynnum Manly Juniors captain James Robinson said the club always believed Monaei would do the job well
praising the centre and back five for their work
and was simply proud of everyone for securing the win despite a late scare
making it a lot harder than it needs to be
but it just shows the resilience of these guys
it goes to show the processes we've got in place and the culture across the whole club."
the red-and-green army celebrated a 28-8 win in reserve grade over Bulimba
and a 28-18 win also over West Brisbane in under 21s

bayside at WynnumThe man behind Wynnum Fringe wants everyone to head bayside to taste the festival’s new spiegeltent home in late September
arts enthusiasts and everyone who’s ready for their yearly pilgrimage to Brisbane’s bayside
We’re gearing up for an exciting program for the fifth Wynnum Fringe
running September 26 to 29 in our newly acquired and half-restored Augathella Spiegeltent
where there will be a First Nations opening ceremony
This year’s festival includes international comedian and host of Channel 10’s The Cheap Seats Melanie Bracewell; Australian wildlife legend Ranger Stacey
who is hosting a family show for young people called Dinosaur Cupcake Pyjama Party; a live audience singalong experience called Massaoke; a comedy gala; and a circus cabaret I’ve written called Taste Cabaret
where the audience and I sing a version of Hot Chocolate tune Every 1’s a Winner
But we’ll change some lyrics to create Everyone’s a Wynnum Baby
There will be food trucks and a heap of bayside community spirit at local bars and restaurants around the venue on Bay Terrace in Wynnum CBD
Wynnum Fringe has transformed from a humble idea to support artists and community through the pandemic into a multi-award-winning event attended by more than 100,000 people
employing thousands and injecting more than $5 million into the local economy
we’re planning for the future and your time is now
It was something to get us through the Queensland border closures in 2020
Our love affair with Mother Nature has hit a rough patch
November in Queensland is like throwing a party in a sauna – with lightning and gale-force winds
Last year’s weather chaos forced us to cancel a few events and that’s not the kind of party we want to throw
we’ve listened to Mother Nature and from 2025 Wynnum Fringe will be basking in the cooler
as we’ll be rolling out the red carpet during the 2032 Olympic Games
But beforehand we’re giving you a taste of what’s to come with this year’s Wynnum Fringe Taster in late September
That’s straight after the wonderful Brisbane Festival
Subscribe for updatesLet’s talk about our new home – the Augathella Spiegeltent
This beauty has travelled 800km from the heart of Outback Queensland to Wynnum
thanks to an incredible crowdfunding campaign that raised $100,000 in three weeks to make it possible
The Augathella Spiegeltent isn’t just a venue – it’s a piece of living Queensland history
Originally designed by the Klessen family from Belgium for the Q150 Celebrations in 2009
this tent is the only one of its kind in the world
our engineer says it is safe for people to gather
so to kickstart the next phase of renovations we will host its first audience in more than 11 years at the Wynnum Fringe Taster
As venues and festivals close across the country
it is truly remarkable to be bringing a live performance venue back to life and connecting world-class artists to audiences in suburban Brisbane at Wynnum
Wynnum Fringe has grown beyond my wildest dreams
To finally have our own venue – a spiegeltent at that – is the cherry on top
The Wynnum Fringe Taster is a celebration of our journey – a tribute to the artists
sponsors and everyone who’s believed in this dream
it has been and continues to be a highly risky journey for the business and this event needs you to buy a ticket and spread the word to keep it going
bringing audiences together and helping our cultural identity in Queensland grow

Lendlease’s third residential building in the Collins Wharf precinct of Victoria Harbour.

The 28-storey building at 971 Collins Street in Melbourne’s Docklands will deliver 312 homes in a mix of one
two and three-bedroom apartments as well as townhouses and penthouses.

According to Lendlease
the project has already secured more than 50 per cent in presales.

Hickory is the construction contractor—it completed the precinct’s first development
in 2019 and is also working on LendLease’s second tower
Regatta.

For Ancora
Hickory is implementing several technical construction methods including various piling techniques and precast concrete solutions that enable a parallel-track construction program.

The building’s facade designed by architect Warren and Mahoney uses a three-stage design incorporating double-glazed glass
and textured precast concrete with Reckli and brick finishes.

The structural design transitions from a solid podium base to lighter upper levels
“reflecting a maritime theme” aligned with the Collins Wharf design objectives.

Ancora will connect to the neighbouring Regatta development via a podium
allowing resident access to shared amenities.

Designed as an all-electric building that includes electric vehicle infrastructure
the development is targeting a 5 Star Green Star certification
Completion is expected in 2027.

Regatta

including remediation of pre-existing wharf piles
installation of raker piles and construction of the extension to Australia Walk

the Coalition’s failure to sway voters has
come under intense scrutiny.

Its lack of policies around property that resonated with voters has been a large part of that criticism.

Among those policies was a $5-billion infrastructure program to unlock up to 500,000 new homes
was greeted with no small amount of scepticism.

The Coalition also campaigned on its previously revealed plan to allow first home buyers to draw down on their superannuation
giving access to up to $50,000 to help fund mortgage deposits.

While that proposal had won some support
it got the thumbs down from many of Australia’s top economists
who said the measure could prove highly inflationary
among other issues.

Similarly
its plan to allow mortgage interest for first home buyers to be tax-deductible was roundly criticised for its likely inflationary and regressive effects.

It has also been pointed out
that the Coalition’s rejection of the Green’s policies around housing supply
affordable housing and help for renters did it no favours.

The ALP
went to the polls spruiking an extension of schemes introduced during its previous term
including a $10-billion promise for its first-home buyers’ scheme to encourage 100,000 more homes.

It also had its Help to Buy shared equity scheme
under which the Government pays up to 40 per cent of the house price
to point to.

If it was these policies per se
or the lack of detail and depth to the Coalition’s
the nation's ready for the Albanese government to act.

What is clear
been endorsed to follow through on its policies
and fix the crisis that is crippling the Australian property sector.

As Urban Taskforce Australia chief executive Tom Forrest has pointed out
it is time for the Federal Government to get back to work.

“Housing affordability and housing supply featured large during the campaign,” Forrest said.

“The key now is for the Government to strike while the iron’s hot.

“If legislation is needed to support the delivery of Labor’s $10-billion
100,000 new homes commitment—then pass it through the parliament now and get on with it.”

The states have
made many changes to how they enable home development
The Federal Government’s support of that is crucial to its success
material supply assistance or any other factor that affects getting homes out of the ground.

This has been a pivotal election
