The man was sentenced to 16 months behind bars
Picture FileThe Burnie Supreme Court heard the 41-year-old told police he had been selling methamphetamine - also known as ice - during the past six months and had 27.3 grams of the drug hidden in a brown leather pouch
ammunition and two stun guns in a metal tool chest in the garage
Jones told police he knew the guns were at his home but they belonged to his brother
He told police he generally sold ice three times a week and had made about $5000 in the past six months
Jones also told officers that some of the ice had been purchased for his own use
Justice Tamara Jago said it was an "aggravating" factor that Jones had committed more crimes while he was subject to a home detention order
"It goes without saying that methamphetamine causes great harm within our community," Justice Jago said
Justice Jago said Jones' drug addiction had "defined" a large period of his life and the offences had stemmed from his own substance use
The court heard the father-of-six had a long and persistent history of offending and blamed himself for being absent from his kids' lives due to his time spent in prison
"Only time will tell if you're truly committed to rehabilitation," Justice Jago said
Jones was sentenced to 16 months behind bars for drug trafficking and possessing a prohibited firearm
The sentence was backdated to November 2024 and Jones will not be eligible for parole until he serves 10 months of the sentence

A report about extending the coastal pathway from Wynyard to Stanley has been released but both Circular Head and Waratah-Wynyard councils say there’s no rush on the project
Waratah-Wynyard Council received a $192,000 grant from the Tasmanian government to commission a feasibility study into extending the coastal pathway from Wynyard to Stanley and Smithton
The report examined a potential 75km path between Wynyard and Stanley
finding construction of the pathway would cost $29-31million in 2024 with annual maintenance costs of $200,000 to be shared between the councils
There is no clear route between Smithton and Stanley so that possibility has been excluded from the report and there is more work to be done
Circular Head mayor Gerard Blizzard said seeking funding for the pathway was not at the top of his council’s agenda
“The feasibility study provides the worst and best case scenarios
Now it needs to be hitting the sweet spot of both councils before we start chasing funding
but when it is a plus for both councils that’s when it will happen,” he said
Waratah-Wynyard Council will discuss the report at its 16 December meeting and general manager Daniel Summers says its priority is to complete ongoing projects rather than seek funding for new projects
In summarising a potential path the report’s author Burchills Engineering Solutions says:
the Wynyard to Stanley Smithton Shared User Trail represents a relatively low-cost
low-risk project with high potential benefits
By leveraging the region's natural beauty and promoting active tourism
the trail can significantly enhance North-West Tasmania's economic and social landscape
making it a more attractive place to live and visit.“
The report can be viewed in the Circular Head Council agenda from 21 November 2024

RELATED Woods Bagot made architects for ‘revolutionary’ Wynyard Walk The Goods Line part one reconnects Sydney and architectural landmarks
Sydney’s Wynyard Station precinct will receive a $1 billion-plus revamp by a design team comprising Britain’s Make Architects and Australia’s Architectus
The project cleared its final planning hurdle on 1 June
gaining final approval from the NSW Cabinet through the Government's Unsolicited Proposals pathway
Developers Brookfield obtained the approval by providing a no-cost upgrade to the station surrounds which fall under government leasehold
The development will see the station surrounds and the Sydney Menzies Hotel receive a $1 billion-plus reinvigoration
58,000sqm office tower called ‘One Carrington Street’
made possible by the demolition of the Menzies Hotel and Thakral House
The tower will facilitate a new eastern transit hall for Wynyard Station off George and Carrington Streets
and will offer four levels of retail space and a basement car park
The project will be developed by Brookfield who took over the listed Thakral Holdings to win access to the Wynyard station site and the Menzies Hotel back in 2012
Brookfield has said the development will include six hotels with over 2,100 rooms operating under the Novotel
The heritage-listed Shell House building on the corner of Margaret Street
Carrington Street and Wynyard Lane (above right) will be spared from demolition under the proposal
The building’s interior will be retrofitted with 8,000sqm of office space and 1,500sqm of retail tenancy
but will maintain its historic exterior façade
Renders also show a glass box addition on the Shell House rooftop
A new laneway planned between George and Carrington Streets will provide pedestrian access between Wynyard Park and George Street
On completion, the Wynyard area will be an important transport hub for Sydney and will lead into the planned Wynyard Walk, designed by Woods Bagot which runs from Clarence Street down to Lend Lease's $6 billion Barangaroo precinct.
Make Architects’ Project Director for One Carrington Street Ian Lomas said the development could see the Wynyard precinct become associated with the world’s great stations.
“The route between Wynyard Station, George Street and the Hunter Connection will give the city a new urban space, with the generosity associated with all great stations around the world,” said Lomas.
“The new office will be sculpted to optimise views to and from the building – each elevation is different to complement and enhance the city’s skyline.”
Contiguous to the project is a $100 million upgrade of the Wynyard train station from the NSW government which will see the city’s third largest transport hub transformed to facilitate the proposed increase in railway traffic from the Barangaroo project.
Built in 1932, the Wynyard station upgrade will encompass the concourse and ticket area, including wider ticket gates, new signage, an upgrade of retail outlets, and new tiling, paint and light fittings.

He was riding home with his father Gene and mother Laine, who were about 10 metres behind him when they saw the dog run through an open gate and pursue Lenny before latching on to his leg.
Mrs Medwin dropped her bike and ran over to Lenny. She said the dog bit her on her ankle before its owner picked it up and put it in the backyard.
Lenny was taken by ambulance to the North West Regional Hospital, where he received 15 stitches. Mrs Medwin's bite did not require treatment, but she was prescribed antibiotics as a precaution.
Since the attack, Mr and Mrs Medwin have been pushing to have the dog declared dangerous. A petition they circulated in their neighbourhood garnered 50 signatures.
They said if the council declared the dog dangerous, the regulations would ensure that the dog could not be off-leash in public areas, would need to be muzzled, and require signage and containment measures to be installed at the property.
The petition was presented to Waratah-Wynyard councillors in May. In response, council officers said that at the time of the incident, no previous complaints had been recorded against the dog.
"Officers have conducted a thorough investigation and are aware of additional control measures at the property and other actions taken by the dog owner following the incident and are satisfied they are reasonable," they said.
"The general manager has reviewed all information, spoken with all parties and determined not to declare the dog dangerous at this time."
Mr and Mrs Medwin said that after Lenny was bitten, a neighbour came forward and said she had been bitten by the dog about a year earlier. Mrs Medwin said the neighbour had expressed regret for not reporting the incident when it happened.
Gene and Laine Medwin with children Will, 18-months, Hallie, 3, and Lenny, 5. Picture by David Bellamy. Inset: Will's wound following a dog bite. Picture supplied. After the petition was received, councillors resolved to discuss the decision further in a closed council meeting.
Mrs Medwin said councillors had told her that following that meeting, they were unable to overturn the general manager's decision.
Mr Medwin said he thought the Dog Control Act was "pretty black and white".
"Either way I read it, it's that if the dog attacks another animal or a human, unless it was provoked, then if it causes anything that needs stitches, [which] is seen as being serious, then it should be classified as a dangerous dog," he said.
Mr Medwin was towing his youngest two children, aged three and 11-months, in a bike trailer at the time of the attack.
He said if the dog had bitten his 11-month-old son Will, the outcome could have been life-threatening.
"If it happened to a younger child like Will, he probably would have lost his leg [from] a bite that big on his little leg," he said.
Mrs Medwin added that the council would "have blood on its hands" if anything happened again with this dog.
General manager Shane Crawford said that following an "extensive review of the incident in question", the council's position had not changed.
"An infringement was issued to the owner of the dog and the dog has not been declared dangerous," he said.

The newest 13.2km section of the North West Coastal Pathway between Wynyard and Cooee is ready to ride following an official opening on 24 October
Our north west riders organised a social ride for around 60 people from the West Point university campus to the opening
which was also attended by state and federal politicians and the Burnie and Waratah-Wynyard mayors
The social ride was led by Bicycle Network volunteer Keith Price
who has been a driving (or riding) force behind the proposal since it was first floated a couple of decades ago
Burnie Mayor Teeny Brumby paid tribute to Keith’s efforts in her speech and Keith used the opportunity to urge the politicians present to get on with the job of funding the outstanding sections of pathway
The Coastal Pathway now runs from Wynyard to Latrobe but there are gaps between Wivenhoe and Heybridge to the east of Burnie
Central Coast Council has designed the section through Turners Beach
which will be the next section to be constructed
and it recently received a grant to design options for the Penguin section
Burnie City Council’s section remains the missing link
the council has indicated it has no plans to apply for funding for design options or construction
While being a useful connection for locals to ride between towns and use for recreation
the path was also intended to be a tourism attractor
That tourism potential is diminished if there is a gaping hole in the route as it ruins the concept of a non-stop multi-day ride
Waratah-Wynyard recently received a state government grant to investigate the feasibility of extending the pathway west towards Stanley and Smithton

He said the sub-branch had relied on the help of just 10 members this year and made it clear this was not sustainable going forward
Mr Hardy said it was a brave decision to call the meeting
"Sometimes extraordinary general meetings are a good thing," he said
"I commend the president as he has been quite brave."
Mr Evans said the work and time required to run an RSL sub-branch had become too much for the current committee
our secretary John Findlater resigned from his position effectively immediately," Mr Evans said in a letter to members
I have personally reached out to the remaining committee members to ascertain their ability to continue in their current positions
have reflected upon what is required to effectively control and manage the business and affairs of the sub-branch and how much time needs to be committed
"The outcome is overwhelmingly clear that none of us have the time required to give the sub-branch what it needs
"The sole intent of the EGM [extraordinary general meeting] is to dissolve the current committee and nominate new members who will see the sub-branch move forward with prosperity in 2025."
and a member of the floor will be called to chair the meeting from then on
Picture by RSL TasmaniaMr Hardy said changes at Circular Head's sub-branch were an example of the different models that Wynyard's new committee could consider
"Circular Head is looking at a smaller location for community-based services and they are not going to try and run a bar and restaurant [anymore]," he said
Mr Hardy said the outcome of the meeting would determine whether RSL Tasmania opened up a smaller veteran's hub at Wynyard
and it will open at the end of next year," he said
we can still do that but it will need a working committee for us to do that."
Mr Evans has been contacted for further comment

Someone once said that politics is the art of looking for trouble
the council-controlled development organisation
to build a big park alongside private sector development on unsightly Tank Farm
It seems a good idea until you read the small print
which can be found in Eke Panuku’s own designs for the area
They would like $300m of ratepayers’ money
about half of it to be spent over a 10-year period
The rest is for developing infrastructure to enable private development – and thus profits for developers – on Wynyard Point
but it turns out Eke Panuku are planning to build up to 600 apartments on Wynyard Point
I have seen a confidential document sent out by Eke Panuku to ask for expressions of interest in a development which will sell off the land or lease it out long-term
presumably to help pay for Te Ara Tukutuku
The document refers to 600-plus homes and 133,000 sq/m floorspace potential with over 50% for housing
If there has been any public discussion or consultation on this
I can’t find it – and that raises some questions:
Firstly was Wynyard Point – the 55,000-person stadium planned for the water’s edge at Tank Farm (including plans for a similar park and public spaces surrounding it) – quietly slipped into a desk drawer because of this
The plans for Te Ara Tukutuku cover the same land as that earmarked for the Wynyard Point stadium – the proposal which seemed to me to make the most sense and was
the least expensive for ratepayers and/or taxpayers
it mysteriously missed making it to the short list presented to council
Eden Park and the Quay Park (which to me seems wholly over-ambitious) were
technically and financially infeasible by the committee overseeing the decision – making the Eden Park decision easy and Te Ara Tukutuku free to proceed
do we really need another big park close to Victoria Park
Victoria Park is not exactly London’s 170 ha Regent’s Park and there will be support for bigger “green lungs” in Auckland’s centre
do we really need up to 600 apartments on the waterfront
So do we need housing for a few – available only after $300m is spent first – at the expense of a stadium and entertainment precinct for everyone
plus ferries and plenty of private car parks in the area
financed by Wynyard Point consortium backer and giant investment bank JP Morgan
the money channelled into the waterfront stadium
The council has talked for years of the expense and redundancy of having four stadiums
yet this solution didn’t even make it to the full debating chamber
Eke Panuku is technically being subsumed into the greater council but there is no indication yet of any changes to the Te Ara Tukutuku plan to spend $300m of ratepayers’ money
add $150m that the council has said will be needed to maintain and operate the four stadiums
Eden Park wants $110m of public money to build its first stage
Establishing infrastructure so developers can build apartments
the Te Ara Tukutuku park and shoring up existing stadium facilities
rationalise at least some of the stadiums and build something iconic and visionary on the waterfront
It all calls to mind the old British TV comedy Yes

Sydney
When the Wynyard tunnels – abandoned railway tunnels connecting to Wynyard Station in Sydney’s CBD – first came alive with lights and immersive sound displays as part of Vivid, Sydneysiders went wild
The idea of exploring formerly abandoned tunnels deep below the city centre is undeniably exciting: like breaking into the haunted house on the hill
locals and visitors will have access to a similar subterranean experience all year round – with a stretch of underground tunnels connected to St James Station opening up to the public
the St James Tunnels were designed by visionary engineer John Bradfield (best known for his role as chief engineer on the Sydney Harbour Bridge project)
Initially intended as part of Bradfield’s plan to extend underground rail travel through Sydney
the tunnels never came to house railways (money for the project ran dry during the Great Depression)
but were used during World War II as air-raid shelters
the tunnels are opening up as a uniquely hands-on historical experience: with immersive multimedia and soundscapes along with guided walking tours offering people a deep-dive into Sydney’s past
The launch of the St James Tunnels experience forms part of the NSW Government’s plan to boost what they’re referring to as “experience-led tourism” (instead of just relying on the beauty of our harbour and beaches)
with plans to help transform the state’s visitor economy into a $91-billion machine by 2035
“Tours like Bridgeclimb on the Harbour Bridge are now a must-do experience for Sydney locals and visitors alike
we want to see tours of the St James tunnels become just as popular,” explained NSW Minister for Transport John Graham
guided tours through the tunnels are set to run several times a day
with “later this year” slated as the launch date.

despite a number of concerns raised by residents
Waratah-Wynyard Council unanimously voted to close the street
which is associated with the Wynyard Sports Precinct Master Plan (WySP)
was trialled between July 25 and November 5 and received mixed reactions
A report to councillors said 13 community comments were received at the beginning of the trial
while 69 comments via social media were sought at the conclusion of the trial
I use this road often and I can't see the benefit," one person wrote on Facebook at the time
Another person said: "Hardly a busy road when no sports on
a designated cross walk and traffic control during events (like [a] market) would make more sense."
"So now all rate paying residents who live on the affected streets (and other residents in the vicinity) are to be inconvenienced to pander to the needs of people occasionally playing sport who are obviously incapable of crossing the road safely
The report to councillors said that many of those who provided feedback on the trial were not supportive of the closure
"And would most likely be dis-satisfied should the council progress a formal closure process," it said
"The persons who have a strong objection to such an action can make formal submissions to [the] council and subsequently can appeal a council decision to proceed
the joint connectivity and safety improvement aims would not be achieved."
A partial closure of Austin Street will force many residents into a detour
Picture by Waratah-Wynyard Council.Councillor Dillon Roberts said on Monday night a traffic impact assessment following the three-month closure showed that traffic did pick up on surrounding streets

"And I know that it might be a little bit of an issue for some but the priority of people
"I think it's a bit of a no-brainer this one."
The council said that while some concerns were raised
particularly regarding changes in traffic patterns on surrounding streets
the technical assessment confirmed the road network can "effectively accommodate these adjustments without significant impact"

While stepping down from the role was not initially his plan
unsuccessful attempts to find additional coaching support ultimately led him to the decision
The 35-year-old was "incredibly grateful" for his time in the navy blue and white jumper
and said he "loved every minute" with the Cats
"People don't understand we went through a rebuild without going out of the top three," Sharman said
we lost a heap of older players and went from the oldest to the youngest team in two years
"I think the club is in a great spot where we've left it
My last game will probably burn for a fair while - it's one we let go and had the opportunity fall through our fingers
"Overall the journey is the most important part
It would have been lovely to finish on that note but incredibly proud of where we got to as a footy club."
I am really keen to spend some time enjoying some other things
and for Morgan to let me play and coach for this long
In his five seasons at the helm, Sharman led the Cats to two grand final appearances - including the 2024 decider - and three preliminary finals
While he was thankful for the support of the entire playing group
Zane Murphy and Kallum Kubicki for their trust in the early days
He was proud of the growth of the club's younger players throughout the years
including the likes of co-captains Sherrin Egger and Noah Fleming
as well as Darcey Brazendale and Jonty Mcivor
"A lot of that group came through the reserves program
so they're not all the most talented players," he said
"I don't think we had the most talented group at any stage; we learned to work hard for what we got

said he would likely only take to the field "for the enjoyment with friends" moving forward
He stressed he would "never play against Wynyard" and if he is to play in the NWFL again it would be with the Cats
Sharman did not believe it would be too difficult for the Cats to find a replacement given the club's strength on and off the field
"I think it's a great football club; they just won best club in Australia, and it's deserved
They're a brilliant football club," he said
Sharman shared that would entertain coaching opportunities in the future
Picture file"They're going to have a group that really aren't going anywhere
"A lot of talent is still going to be there and they're going to be thereabouts again
If there is anyone aspiring to jump into senior coaching
that's a pretty bloody good group to jump on board with."
While this chapter in Sharman's career has ended
he did not believe his coaching journey was over
"I don't see myself coaching at a lower level
But I love coaching and believe I have something to offer," he said
"Where the opportunity pops up down the line
"I am really keen to spend some time enjoying some other things
