Sydney another stretch of train line is (temporarily) closing with the T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line set to be closed for nine weeks from late April the T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line will be closed for nine full weeks The stations affected are just those on the T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line: Yagoona If you’re travelling along the Lidcombe line past Regents Park it’s just the short offshoot line that’s affected with the 8T6 stopping at all stations between Bankstown and Lidcombe and the 8AT6 running an express service between Bankstown and Lidcombe Unlike the stretch of train line between Sydenham and Bankstown the Lidcombe and Bankstown Line isn’t being converted into a metro line but upgrades are being made to “future-proof” the platforms and line The upgrades include enabling the line to carry eight-car trains (currently only the smaller four-car trains can run along the line) and extending the platforms at Bankstown station Stay in the loop: sign up for our free Time Out Sydney newsletter for more news Thanks for subscribing! Police search Waruda st at Yagoona for evidence in what is believed to be a targeted shooting Link copiedShareShare articleA man has been shot in the stomach at Yagoona in Sydney's south-west as the number of suburban shootings this year reaches 30. Police were called to a home in Waruda street after residents heard gunshots. A 34-year-old man was found with two wounds to his torso. Police believe he was deliberately targeted. Inspector Steve Greer says the man is known to them and is currently in a serious condition. "The male was treated by ambulance officers and was taken to Liverpool hospital where is he currently undergoing surgery," he said. Crime scene investigators gather evidence in Waruda st, Yagoona. The New South Wales Opposition leader John Robertson says it is time for a crackdown on gangs. "People in Western Sydney have had enough," he said. "We have some of the toughest laws in the country when it comes to dealing with gangs but the O'Farrell Liberal govt refuses to use them. "This government could outlaw gangs immediately and that would then mean police could get in the face of these thugs, break up their networks and the way they operate and stop these shootings from occuring". Mr Robertson says police in Sydney's west and south-west need more resources. The local member for Bankstown says residents in Sydney's south-west are sick of gun crime and want the government to act. Labor MP Tania Mihailuk says the state government needs to do more to help residents feel safe. "Currently Bankstown police command is 10 short of its authorised strength the police command should be properly resourced," she said. "The reality is people are feeling unsafe out here is south western Sydney. Community safety is simply not on the radar of this government." (ABC News) Link copiedShareShare articleA magistrate has described a stabbing brawl between two neighbouring families at Yagoona in Sydney's south-west as "barbaric". Haider Al Moosawy, 47, and his sons Saggad and Husein appeared in Bankstown local court each charged with wounding with intent to murder a 16-year-old boy. The charges are a result of an alleged fight between neighbours, which police were called to just before 3pm (AEST) on Sunday. When officers arrived they found five people injured, four of them had been stabbed. Magistrate Elaine Truscott told the court Moosawy allegedly came armed with three knives, one for him and one for each of his sons. It is alleged the 16-year-old boy was stabbed seven times. The court also heard the father allegedly stabbed the boy's 24-year-old sister in the eye with a screwdriver then turned her over and stabbed her in the back. Magistrate Truscott said both victims lost large quantities of blood. She also labelled the alleged offences as "barbaric". He said the officers backed away from the house but the man then pursued them outside, wildly slashing in their direction.  'The junior officer deployed a taser, and that had an impact on the 29-year-old, however he used the knives to disable that device,' he told reporters. 'The individual tried to slash and stab the female officer. She lost her footing, she fell backwards. He continued the attack.' The assailant's attention was drawn to the male officer, who then fired three rounds, hitting the man in the chest. The two officers then performed CPR until paramedics arrived.  'I can only describe it as a very frightening event for both police and anyone who witnessed it,' Assistant Commissioner Smith said. '(The officers) didn't expect to be confronted by such a vicious attack.' The man was rushed to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition but later died. The two officers were uninjured apart from a small knife wound on the male officer's neck.  A local resident told Daily Mail Australia they heard gun shots then someone screaming: 'You shot my brother! You shot my brother!'.  A large group of men claiming to be relatives of the man were later seen briefly arguing with officers after they were prevented from crossing police tape. It is understood the man had a history of mental health problems.  It is not known if any people inside the house were injured.  The family declined to comment when contacted by Daily Mail Australia.  A critical incident team comprised of officers from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm. Bodycam and CCTV footage will be examined and the investigation will be subject to independent review. A report will be prepared for the coroner.  The incident follows another man who was shot dead by officers in Auburn police station after lunging at officers with a knife.  The Indian national had moments earlier stabbed a cleaner at nearby Auburn train station about 12am on Tuesday.  The officers worked to save the 32-year-old man's life but he was later declared dead at the scene by paramedics.  Detectives from the counter terrorism squad are investigating that stabbing. (702 ABC Sydney: John Donegan) Link copiedShareShare articleFunding for a new program has been delivered to Sydney Living Museums to help students access some of its 13 sites. New South Wales Minister for Heritage and the Environment Mark Speakman launched the two-year program called Unlocking Heritage. The program aims to remove financial barriers preventing primary schools students from experiencing the state's historic and cultural heritage. Students from regional and rural schools across the state will be able to spend a night in the Hyde Park Barracks, becoming the first people to sleep in the reportedly haunted buildings for decades. The Unseco World Heritage-listed building housed more than 40,000 convicts and 4,000 orphans in the early 1800s. Wendy Tran, 10, from Yagoona Public School said it felt a bit weird to be dressed as a convict, but the hammocks were comfortable. "I think I'd rather sleep in a hammock at home," she said. Yagoona Public School students dressed as convicts during their visit to the Hyde Park Barracks. (702 ABC Sydney: John Donegan) "I felt bad for the convicts having to live in there and work hard all day. "There's no PlayStation or anything for them to relax." More than $1,000,000 in funding was earmarked for the program. Part will be spent on travel subsidies for primary school students to attend more than 30 education programs at eight Sydney Living Museum sites and nine National Parks and Wildlife Service sites across NSW. The unique convict-themed sleepover at the Hyde Park Barracks Museum, including subsidised travel for rural and regional schools, will be a hallmark of Unlocking Heritage. Sydney Living Museums director Mark Goggin is excited at the prospect of students having sleepovers in the barracks. "These were places where people lived and slept and to get that sense of being immersed in history is great," he said. "Particularly for the kids to wear the convict shirts, eat the gruel, sleep over with their mates in hammocks and imagining what life was like 200 years ago." Sydney Living Museums is now looking at ways of extending the project to accommodate adults too. "We wanted to start with children because it is a most evocative experience for them," Mr Goggin said. "There are a few more logistics involved with adults not withstanding just the weight of adults wearing out the hammocks. "We wouldn't want the hammocks to collapse during the night." While the barracks were built to house convicts, the site was converted into an orphanage in 1848 for children fleeing the Irish famine. Mr Goggin said it was a good opportunity for children to immerse themselves in an environment that some of the first child migrants to Australia experienced.
