As a Yamba local
I’ve watched the sleepy fishing town of my childhood mature into an impressive beachside destination
which still manages to maintain its unpretentious essence and strong sense of community
Yamba is located on the coast of northern NSW at the mouth of the Clarence River. It’s about a three-hour drive from Brisbane. Visitors arriving from Sydney can catch a one-hour flight to Ballina-Byron Airport and drive the remaining 100 kilometres down to Yamba, otherwise it’s around a seven-hour drive along the NSW coastline.
Yamba is located at the mouth of the Clarence River
Other towns worth visiting within day-trip distance of Yamba include the charming riverside town of Maclean; Iluka with its UNESCO World Heritage-listed rainforest; the rugged
unspoilt beaches of Brooms Head; and the surfing hamlet of Angourie

Aussies are spoilt for choice and by all accounts
2025 promises to be a positive year for domestic travel
“We know value for money will continue to be important in 2025 and this year’s top ten destinations offer affordable accommodation options
with an average daily rate on Wotif between $175 and $300 per night
“With Easter and the school holidays just around the corner
now is the perfect time to lock in a short break.”
“At the mouth of the Clarence River on the North Coast of NSW

If you’re visiting Yamba for a lazy beach holiday, it’s worth spending one of its endless sunny days taking a road trip from Yamba to Byron Bay. Traversing the North Coast of NSW will see you dropping into some of the most quintessentially Aussie towns with turquoise blue waters
chowing down on classic hamburgers for your post-swim lunch and winding through rainforests high up in the hinterland
Here’s our guide to the best places to stop on the drive from Yamba to Byron Bay
Only a little off-route? Sure. Worth it? Absolutely. The ferry from Yamba to Iluka might take 30 minutes (and runs regularly every day of the week), but the drive isn’t too bad – less than an hour will land you in a town where time feels like it stopped in 1975. There’s one row of boutiques and cafes, but if you’re there after 11.30am you absolutely must visit Sedgers Reef Hotel’s bistro
the outdoor seating is breezy and pet friendly
and the interiors are so Australiana it hurts
There’s also a particularly memorable experience to be had at Chez Basho Boatshed Cafe
located on Charles Street right off the water
as super authentic Japanese-inspired fare keeps locals smiling
The team introduced a selection of cocktails to the menu in October 2024
so lunch is officially more festive than ever
Nature lovers can get amongst their preferred poison as the Iluka Bluff Lookout and Iluka Rainforest Walking Track dish up exceptional vistas of the NSW coastline
Following the path to Frazers Reef will also uncover a spectacular hidden beach
Don’t miss any of it during your Yamba to Byron Bay journey
Stray serves up coffee and indulgent breakfast plates
Your next detour along a Yamba to Byron Bay expedition is Evans Head. Busier than Iluka but not as popular as nearby Lennox Head (more on that gem soon) and Yamba, Evans Head has a great surf break (hire a board at Evans Head Surf Shack during summer) and a laid-back feel
If it’s lunch, punch 14 Oak Street into your Maps and prepare to salivate. Chippa is Evans Heads’ go-to fish-and-chippery and the fruits of its labour are downright delicious
Think all the classics like a Fisherman’s Basket
plus burgers and salads tossed with finesse
Grab your board and head to the beach at Lennox Head
Made famous when the Hemsworth brothers nabbed gigantic properties to lay the groundwork for ‘Hemsworth Hills’ just outside of town
Lennox Head is a huge hit with surfers who cruise the coast looking for perfect breaks
As a result of its frothy street cred, the town has plenty to offer tourists including stylish eateries like Shelter and Williams Street, nestled alongside feed-me stalwarts like Fishy Fishy which nails takeaway fish and chips
Fine dining also makes waves around here with Baraka, home to Middle Eastern masterpieces, and Quattro Beachfront Italian mastering flavour-packed dishes and special-occasion ambience
Meanwhile, the party force is strong over at Chido Cantina
where Mexican-laced mayhem often attracts thick crowds
Head up to Pat Morton Lookout during your Yamba to Byron Bay getaway to really soak up the region and pick up a handmade gelato from Lennox Gelato and Coffee Co before getting back on the road
From Lennox Head you’ll want to wind into the Byron Bay Hinterland as opposed to following the coast. Additionally, Suffolk Park, right near Crystalbrook Byron, one of the best Byron Bay accommodation picks
flowing with the same dense rainforest and hippie energy
Grab a coffee and a pastry from The General Store while you peruse the locally sourced produce
Take in the breathtaking Bundjalung Country hinterland of Byron Bay at Gaia Retreat & Spa
If you have time (and extra cash) along your Yamba to Byron Bay adventure, book into the nearby Gaia Retreat & Spa
tranquil surroundings and extensive self-care offerings will help you shed a year’s worth of stress
Before you continue to your final destination descent, drop into the Newrybar Merchants for some retail therapy
The quaint collective of killer boutiques is a haven for one-of-a-kind homewares
Peruse the boutique shops along the main street of Bangalow
Savvy travellers in search of a Byron experience along the Yamba to Byron Bay track without the fuss
restaurants and the region’s signature luxe-boho shops
Island Luxe and Rowie speak fluent fashion, while Our Corner Store will see you picking up everything from local produce to handmade mugs and plates
You Beauty has turned regular pub classics into refined meals
The restaurant scene overachieves too with You Beauty, slicking up your regular corner pub via ultra-refined dishes and sensational drinks, and Ciao, Mate!
owned by renowned Melbourne chef Nick Stanton and lighting up a restored historical building
BYO stretchy pants for the latter pick especially as seasonal pastas
woodfired pizzas and traditional desserts fulfil universal Italian feasting dreams
Eyes firmly fixed on the prize of caffeine? Zip straight to Butcher Baker where cafe life is expertly crafted
Your Yamba to Byron Bay road trip has drawn to a close — but the fun’s only just beginning. If you’re arriving in the evening, head down to The Rails Hotel for a nightcap as there’s often a band playing in the outdoor bar
If there’s still time for a swim, Wategos Beach (and the glamorous Raes on Wategos dining room
destined for post-swim indulgence) is less busy on a late afternoon
Park further up the hill and walk down as there are usually easier parallel parks along the side of the road than those in the car park
Raes on Wategos is best for waterfront dining
Keen to sample the newest kids on the block? Hotel Marvell has slam-dunk five-star perfection since its opening at the end of 2023, serving as one of the most luxe accommodation offerings in Byron Bay
Additionally, it’s home to the Byron Bay Oyster Bay & Seafood Restaurant
which opened in October 2024 and oozes big summer energy — the perfect reward for a road trip well-conquered

This is just the latest in a list of accolades for the popular tourist town

The Top 10 most searched Hidden Gems in Australia in 2024 are:
Yamba is around eight hours north of Sydney
so while you can technically drive there in one day
you’ll be arriving bone-tired and unable to immerse yourself in spectacular sleepy beach towns along the way
A much better Sydney to Yamba itinerary is to meander on and off the Pacific Highway
checking in to crystal-clear beaches and an all-year-round holiday lifestyle without detouring too far
Here are our favourite sights and towns to visit on a Sydney to Yamba road trip
Avoca Beach boasts pristine sands and crystal waters
Around one-and-a-half hours north of Sydney will land you on the Central Coast, and while you might find the busy township of Terrigal a bit too populated for your liking (although it’s filled with great cafes and boutiques), your first dip in the ocean should be at Avoca Beach, one of the best beaches on the Central Coast
The calm waters of Nelson Bay make it perfect for boating
If you’re taking it easy, you’ll likely get to Hawks Nest around lunchtime. It’s two hours north of Avoca and around fifteen minutes towards the coastline when you venture off the Pacific Highway. The white sand made famous by Nelson Bay is also found here
so don’t bother taking your swimmers off after your Avoca dip
Lunch during your Sydney to Yamba pit stop should absolutely be at the Tea Gardens Hotel. It has a large, breezy, pet-friendly beer garden with plenty of shade and, on weekends, stages live music. The pub grub is delicious, and the beers are cold. If you’re staying in Hawks Nest proper, a more convenient pub option is Benchmark on Booner with its own outdoor tables
The pizzas are especially rocking here, and it’s right across the road from Reflections Hawks Nest, which continues its extensive refurbishment efforts since kicking them off in December 2023. Meanwhile, the Tea Gardens Boatshed is the ultimate spot for a seafood platter right on the shores of the Myall River
Get your nature fix at Sea Acres Rainforest Centre
For lunch, you’re spoilt for choice, but our ultimate recommendation is Whalebone Wharf where high-quality seafood soars and cocktails might even run into sunset
Whalebone Wharf is perched high upon a platform on Hastings River
While you’re dining at this end of town, located closer to the Pacific Highway than Port’s town centre, drop into Ricardoes Tomatoes & Strawberries where you can pluck your own fruit and select outstanding housemade relishes and pasta sauces to take home with you
Sails Port Macquarie by Rydges is a great pick to rest your head after some well-deserved indulgence, while Flynn’s Beach Resort is a winner if you’ve got the kids in tow
Port Macquarie to Nambucca Heads: 1.2 hours
Nambucca Heads is a coastal gem where the river meets the sea
An hour and a half north of Port Macquarie you’ll come across Nambucca Heads and its sister town, Valla Beach. Both are beautiful, peaceful NSW beach towns worth meandering through, with great cafes like the Nambucca Boatshed and Cafe
There’s also Matilda’s
a hot spot that slings superb pizzas and weekend barbecues from midday
Get there early because it lights up with local coasties quickly
This charming pink cottage serves delicious pizzas
If it’s a classic pub feed you’re hankering for, you’ve got two killer options. Golden Sands Tavern is chilled and often filled with live entertainment, while V Wall Pavilion throws up soothing water views and equally tasty plates
Valla is our pick for a swim at this point of your Sydney to Yamba expedition. Slightly north of Nambucca, the town is RV-friendly if you’ve brought the caravan, and the lagoon area near Valla Beach Holiday Park is serene and great for kids with its low depth and calm waters
Nambucca Heads to Coffs Harbour: 35 minutes
Snap a selfie beside one of Australia’s most iconic Big Things
It is practically mandatory to make a stop at Coffs Harbour’s Big Banana, one of Australia’s most iconic Big Things
which you can’t miss along the Pacific Highway
This road trip classic isn’t just a photo op
though – stop into the cafe for a banana split (or a frozen banana to-go) and enjoy everything the Fun Park has to offer
from waterslides to dodgem cars and laser tag
When tummies rumble, it’s time to check out the best restaurants in Coffs Harbour and the surrounding locales including Stef Beachstone for atmospheric Italian feasting and the Jetty Beach House for one of the most spectacular waterfront dining positions in the region
Sip refreshing beers at Sanctus Brewing Co
There are plenty of boutiques to satiate shopping fans, and five kilometres out in Harwood you’ll find Cardiff Alpacas
where you can entertain the kids with a unique farm experience (and maybe pat a baby alpaca
Sightseeing amid nature’s splendour is also plenty satisfying at this final section of your Sydney to Yamba road trip
a striking stacked-rock formation with significant Indigenous history
vividly hued and poking out of lush lawn for a colourful holiday happy snap
located just two kilometres out of the town centre and offering magical views of the coastline
Stop by the small fishing village of Iluka
enjoy the beautiful crossing over Oyster Channel
where the road feels like it’s skimming the water
Yamba Road runs all the way into the thick of things and along the way, you’ll pass Yamba Fair (where Coles and Kmart are found) and the Clarence River Fishermen’s Co-Operative’s Yamba retail outlet
where freshly caught delicacies will prove far too tempting
Enjoy pub meals overlooking the beach at The Pacific Hotel Yamba
fluffy stay with your name written all over it
In desperate need of a meal beyond whatever’s going at the servo? Head straight to the Pacific Hotel Yamba where pub sessions by the beach are the order of every day
the Pacific is stocked with clean and contemporary rooms so dropping and flopping is also a very convenient option

No community consultation has been nor will be undertaken by NSW Ambulance regarding a new ambulance staffing roster to be introduced on Saturday 15 March
The new roster will eliminate on-call staff
On-call staff are generally kept in town to cover emergencies while duty crew are often deployed on non-emergency work at other locations
ambulances from the Lower Clarence are servicing Grafton resulting in no ambulances in the Lower Clarence with consequent slower response times to emergency calls
If staff are no longer required to be on call
they will not be required to reside in the station’s response area
resulting in slower emergency response times and the inability of ambulance staff to reach Yamba when it is isolated by flooding
The rostering system changes will affect everyone

Proposed for the 975sq m site at 4-6 High Street
Yamba was this year named Best Tourist Town in Australia by Australian Traveller Magazine
The site is within walking distance of amenities
but these would contravene current height restrictions
A basement carpark would provide 31 spaces and feature stackers
The project would include onsite stormwater treatment and detention
The project aligns with local and state planning strategies
Meanwhile, the Clifton Yamba $80-million independent living community 2km west of the high street is now at Stage Nine. The land-lease estate is part of developer Clifton Lifestyle’s plan to deliver 216 self-contained manufactured homes in the town’s north-west
Yamba Rugby Club started in 1975 when Doug Anderson
Kev Durkin & Bob Clark decided to enter a team in the Far North Coast RU competition
Norm Ratjens was appointed Club Coach and Bob Clark the inaugural captain
Fifteen-year-olds Rob Mcpherson and Peter Engel were enticed into the team along with the experienced Peter McDonnell and Doug Anderson
In the first few seasons the results were mixed with a few good victories against the old foe Grafton Redman
In 1979 Steve Miller took over as coach for 5 seasons and the results became positive – players such as Club Captain Mark Burns
David Durrington performed solidly in the backs while Stan Bright
Harry Woods and Chris Searant were dominate up front
In 1982 Yamba won its first Premiership under the leadership of back-rower Kim Morgans and Coach Steve Miller
In 1983 Mark Burns gave the name ’Buccaneers’ to Yamba Rugby as he had played for the Pirates in Tamworth
That year the newly named Buccaneers were finalists and in 1984 were defeated in the Grand Final against Byron Bay
In 1985 the club was elevated into First Grade and struggled there for the next five seasons due to the lack of depth mainly due to injuries but still managed some memorable victories and were competitive in that arena
Junior Rugby was first established with an Under 18 team coached by Doug Anderson
Later Andy McLennan established Junior Rugby on a Friday night in 2002
producing such players as Wallabies Kane Douglas and Jed Holloway as well as Conor Young who has represented Canada
All these players also played for Southern Districts in the Shute Shield
The bottom field at Yamba is now known as Kane Douglas Rugby Park
The Junior Buccaneers are now flourishing with 10 teams playing on a Friday night
This season will start with a “History of Yamba Buccaneers Rugby Club” Exhibition at the Old Kirk
opening 5:30pm Friday April 4 and closing Saturday April 26
Followed by a 50th Anniversary dinner at Yamba Surf Club on Saturday July 5 with “The Team of the Half Century” announced from ALL players who have played for Yamba over that period
Finally Old Boys Day on Saturday July 26 vs Kyogle on the last home game of the season
The Buccaneers have won Senior Premierships in 1982
2010 and 2018 with numerous defeats in grand finals during that period

stay and play in Yamba – the beautifully unpretentious beach town on the nothern NSW coast
There are a lot of towns in NSW that visitors are quick to label “the next Byron Bay”
a title that’s both a compliment and a terrifying suggestion that any semblance of undiscovered serenity could soon vanish
historic lighthouse and rapidly developing dining scene
Yamba might be the town to which that (possibly unwelcome) moniker could most accurately apply
And though we’re big fans of everything Byron has to offer
there’s something magical about a beach town that hasn’t yet experienced such across-the-board gentrification.Located on Yaegl Country
Yamba is a gem on the northern coast of NSW – home to a welcoming community of beach-loving sunshine enthusiasts
and a pod of dolphins that you’ll often see moving gracefully up and down the coast
I defy you not to fall in love with this delightfully unpretentious town

overlooking the town’s 1.6km-long Pippi Beach
I would come back here for the bread alone – locally-made wattleseed sourdough served with a perfectly sweet-salty macadamia butter
The constantly evolving four course menu changes every week based on what Head Chef and owner Zac Roberts picks up at the Wednesday morning markets
with each creation a divine celebration of local produce
Roberts’ love for the craft of cooking shines through in every dish
with flavours perfectly balanced and the freshest local ingredients elevated to perfection
we’d suggest booking a table in the (dog-friendly) courtyard and letting the team order for you – just make sure you finish with a macadamia Martini
you might find it difficult to leave the rooftop – don’t say we didn’t warn you

Here, gentle waves roll into shore on pristine sands surrounded by luscious green hills and iconic Norfolk Pine trees. There is also a scenic ocean pool for swimming enthusiasts and one of NSW’s oldest surf lifesaving clubs taking centre stage on the beachfront.
Along with the charming Yamba lighthouse, there are blissful beachside walking tracks, national parks, wilderness reserves, coastal walks perfect for spotting dolphins, sea turtles and migrating whales, as well as a bustling dining scene to be discovered.
The iconic ocean pool at Yamba Main Beach is a favourite for locals.

Yamba residents are concerned about the rate of crime in the area – some residents having frightfully close calls with would-be thieves
A cohort meeting with police and local MPs today
Thousands of locals and visitors to the Lower Clarence attended the biggest ever annual Yamba Rotary Twilight Markets on Wednesday
with people packing Coldstream Street at stall holders reporting record trade
which began in Yamba Street and were held there until it was redeveloped
and in his 25-year involvement the 2025 event was the biggest ever
and we had three businesses in Coldstream Street that opened up and put out tables
plus the Wobbly Chook and the Mexican were open
so there was good participation from new businesses,” he said
“It was the biggest crowd we’ve ever seen…there were certainly thousands of people in the street at any one time.”
Along with the record crowd attendance and stall holders
“We’re usually pretty close to capacity with stalls and this year we had a wait list that never got less than 10,” he said
“We’ve got one new stall and two stalls that were there this year that have booked for next year already.”
Mr Angelo said Yamba Rotary were still tallying up what they raised at the markets
“It will probably be about $2000 up on previous years,” he said
The club meets every second and fourth Tuesday night at Yamba Bowling Club at 5.30pm for a 6pm start
Veering off the Pacific Highway towards Yamba might feel like leaving reality behind and escaping to a pocket of beach-filled paradise
but if you’re in town for more than a few days it’s definitely worth hopping back in the car and venturing inland again to experience the serenity of the hinterlands and its many waterfalls
Minyon Falls drops 100 metres from an escarpment into a crystal clear plunge pool that’s open for swimming
so you can float at your leisure near the roar of the waterfall
Located inside the heritage-listed Nightcap National Park
there are also picnic areas and walking tracks nearby (plus a lookout up top if you’re not keen on swimming)
making Minyon Falls perfect for a day trip
Take in the power of Minyon Falls from above
Boundary Falls can be found inside Gibraltar Range National Park
Although its a little further from Yamba than some
accessed by a 200-metre track and a small descent down some stairs
There’s a campground nearby if you want to make an overnighter of it
and it’s worth exploring the national park itself if you have time – there are some beautiful walks to enjoy
Killen Falls is a popular swim spot among locals
The largest waterfall in Dorrigo National Park
Red Cedar Falls thunders from above amid red cedars and bangalow palms
slip in for a swim at the base of the falls
The only issue is the lengthy walk to get there
around an 8.9-kilometre round trip from the Never Never picnic area
But for those willing to make the Grade 4 trek
you’ll likely have the breathtaking waterfall all to yourself
Red Cedar is the largest waterfall in Dorrigo National Park
This is one of those waterfalls where the name really says it all
A short walk from the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre
make your way across the suspension bridge and you’ll arrive in a wide valley with excellent views of the falls
Take the side trail to check out the cave behind the waterfall
Although you can’t swim here (the pool isn’t very deep
so it’s not ideal for swimming anyway)
the walk and views are worth the drive anyway
Dangar Falls isn’t too far off if you’re especially keen for a dip
When a logging protest back in 1979 successfully saw the area around Terania Creek protected from land clearing
but the walking track is a drawcard in itself
the Grade 3 round trip is great for exploring with friends – you may even spot local pademelons and frogs
Pop in to Protesters Falls in Nightcap National Park
This lesser-known waterfall is a great spot for a summer swim
usually filled with locals having a leisurely dip
Even if you visit and the waterfall isn’t flowing (it usually needs heavy rain to get going)
it’s still a lovely place to spend the day
Whian Whian Falls is (again) found in Nightcap National Park
specifically in the Whian Whian State Conservation Area
Find the falls in Whian Whian State Conservation Area
Dangar Falls has one of the best swimming holes beneath it
where many locals and tourists while away their days
dipping in and out of the pool below the waterfall
You’ll find the waterfall in Dorrigo National Park via the Dangar Falls walking track
There’s also a viewing area at the top of the waterfall
perfect for those who don’t want to get wet
Spend the day relaxing by the water at Dangar Falls
Fantastic didnt know about any of theses falls
Very good info, love waterfalls, and rainforest walkss
A great-grandmother from the north coast has turned her own personal war on waste

Queenslander Cory Crawford has his eyes on the summer of golf after earning his second adidas PGA Pro-Am Series win of the year at Yamba
Returning from a long layoff due to a back injury with zero status on the national pro-am circuit
Crawford added to his win at Ballina with a commanding five-shot victory at the Ray White Yamba Pro-Am at Yamba Golf and Country Club
With international experience playing in China
Crawford lost all associated status required to play regularly in the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series
that situation has now been rectified with Crawford eyeing off even bigger scalps during the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia season
“I had five months off and was planning on playing some pro-ams but I looked at my ranking and I had no status
“I hadn’t played a pro-am for four years so my goal was to try and get into 10 events somehow.“I was able to do that and then obviously make enough money to get some status for next year to give me the option to go play
“Now that I’ve been able to tick that box I’m going to play the Tour starting in October and play all the way through until March.”
Tied with Order of Merit leader Brett Rankin after matching rounds of 6-under 66 on day one
