A Google Street View image led police to solve the mystery of a woman who wandered off from her home and couldn’t be found
83-year-old Paulette Landrieux suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and was in the care of her husband Marcel Taret
Marcel went outside to hang laundry on a clothesline
he found that Paulette was gone and began frantically searching and calling out for her
Fearing for his wife’s safety given her vulnerable state
Marcel called the police which immediately began a full-scale search involving helicopters and dozens of officers
Almost two years after Paulette’s disappearance in October 2022
a neighbor browsing Google Street View happened upon an image that made them freeze
Well aware of Paulette and Marcel’s story
the neighbor immediately realized the significance of seeing Paulette walking away from her home on Google Maps
After the police were alerted to the image
they were able to track the route that Paulette was on
They soon discovered that Paulette’s path led her to a thick bramble bush which is ultimately where authorities discovered her body
“So very likely Paulette, in her confused state, walked straight across the street as we see in the image and then fell down that hill and got trapped at the bottom inside of that bramble bush and couldn’t move,” explains podcaster and Youtuber MrBallen who revealed the story in a video.
“And so when that huge search for her was going on
very likely she was just trapped down there but didn’t understand what was going on
She couldn’t necessarily yell up to communicate with anybody
So she stayed down there and died.”
The fact that the Google Street View car — which roams around the world taking 360-degree photos of neighborhoods — just happened to be rolling by as Paulette was wandering off is truly an amazing coincidence
Marcel may still not know what happened to his wife
Just a few weeks ago, PetaPixel reported on how a Google Street View image of a man unloading what appears to be a body from the trunk of a car is a clue in a Spanish murder investigation

A heartbreaking Google Maps image has helped to solve a case two years after a woman vanished from her home
The image helped to solve the disappearance of Paulette Landrieux, 83, an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s disease in Andenne, Belgium
Paulette was last seen alive in November of 2020
A podcaster
recounted in a recent video how she disappeared after her husband turned his back for just a few moments
MrBallen explained in his video: “Paulette needed help remembering to eat or to take her medications on time
“Sometimes she would just wander off without telling Marcel and he would have to go and corral her and bring her back home.”
Marcel turned away from hers to peg some clothes on a line
only to turn around and not find her where he’d left her
He had left her in front of the TV with some lunch
This would be the last time he would see her alive
one of Paulette’s neighbours happened to be looking on Google Maps when they spotted something bizarre: Paulette herself
there was a Google streetview car driving past Paulette and Marcel’s house at the very moment she walked away from him
The picture shows Marcel pegging clothes on the line and Paulette walking away from him
The neighbours realised and passed on the information
with investigators eventually looking into the photo and tracing her path away from the house
MrBallen explained: “Across the street was a steep hill that led down to a thick bramble bush.”
Investigators found Paulette’s body in the bush
The YouTuber went on to say: “When that huge search for her was going on
very likely she was just trapped down there
couldn’t necessarily yell up to communicate with anybody
The video was part of a MrBallen video on ‘disturbing stories’
One comment regarding the story of Paulette said: “Far as the first story goes
if my wife up and vanished I’d be afraid I wouldn’t last long
She does more for me than she will ever know every single day.”
Another said: “The one thing that confuses me is how tf for nearly TWO YEARS nobody at the neighbouring house realised there was a dead body in their yard

The mysterious case of the disappearance of an elderly woman with Alzheimer's in Belgium was solved thanks to Google Maps.
Marcel Taret was the only caregiver for his 83-year-old wife Paulette Landrieux, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
Podcaster Mr Ballen, whose recent video on the matter went viral, explained that caring for Paulette was a full-time job for Marcel.
'Paulette needed help remembering to eat or to take her medications on time,' he said.
'Sometimes she would just wander off without telling Marcel and he would have to go and corral her and bring her back home.'
Marcel turned his back on Paulette for just a few minutes as they were both in the garden of their home in Andenne, Belgium, on November 2, 2020, to hang up laundry.
This, sadly, would be the last time he ever saw her.
He anxiously called the police, who promptly sent a search and rescue helicopter over the area to find her, to no avail.
Despite the continuous search efforts, Paulette was not found for two years.
But, by complete chance, a Google Streetview car was driving past the house at the same time as the disappearance.
In 2022, one of Marcel's neighbours examined the Streetview photos on the road and found the haunting final image of Paulette.
Paulette can be seen walking across the street away from her home while Marcel is in the background, hanging up the laundry.
Using this new lead, police traced the path that Paulette appeared to be taking and found her body hidden in a bramble bush.

The L’Œuf d’Or hatchery in Andenne, Belgium, was recently inagurated in a ceremony. | PHoto courtesy of L'Oeuf D'OrThe new L’Œuf d’Or hatchery
more than 850 persons on November 16-17 attended the opening of this hatchery
designed to have a state-of-the-art approach to animal welfare and environment
Walloon Minister of Agriculture René Collin and Andenne Mayor Claude Eerdekens fulfilled the ribbon cutting ceremony together with the initiators of the L’Œuf d’Or project
Christian Van Ryckeghem and Steven Vervaeke.
as Wallonia is producing 80 percent of the Belgian volume of alternative broilers and this segment is (increasing yearly),” said Van Ryckeghem
The consumers in Wallonia – and in nearby Luxemburg – have a clear preference for organic and/or certified label production
because they are very attentive to animal-friendly production and attach high importance to the quality and taste of the product
“I am enthusiastic that the new hatchery is situated in the immediate proximity of our customers and in a first phase we will produce for them 130,000 day-old alternative chicks per week
but the hatchery – an investment of EUR6 million (US$6.8 million) is designed in such a way that capacity can be increased”.
stated: “I am proud and honored to be part of this transparent project that completely fits in the 10-year plans of the Walloon region to further develop the alternative poultry production sector.”
Vervaeke also explained why L’Œuf d’Or can justify the animal welfare claim: “We have chosen to eliminate all stressful automatized handling of our day-old chicks from hatch until delivery to nearby farms
indispensable Marek’s and Gumboro vaccination will already be conducted in ovo.”
Environment is also a priority as the hatchery will operate fully on renewable energy through the use of solar panels
hygiene and traceability are fully taken into account
Rearing and reproduction of the Sasso and Hubbard parent stock are fully integrated
Vervaeke noted that strict rules are followed from collection of the eggs until delivery of the day-old chicks
Key in this approach are stringent vaccination of parent stock and chicks
application of biosecurity rules and control plans
“Although we now inaugurate a modern and visionary hatchery in Belgium
this project is backed by more than 100 years of history”
It was his grandfather who started the hatchery activities of L’Œuf d’Or in 1911 in Kruishoutem
“Since 2001 the focus of the hatchery became organic production and slow growing breeds and since 2016 these activities are conducted in close partnership with another competent and passionate family of hatchers
namely Axel and Steven Vervaeke from Vervaeke-Belavi in Tielt
Both initiators are trusting the daily management of the activities to a young and motivated team
where François Cuisinier will act as general and commercial manager and François-Xavier d’Hem as the operational manager.

Located in the heart of Andenne, near the town square, the project by Frédéric Haesevoets Architecture + Art and Build focuses on the revitalization of the city center
to assure for the future a coherent urbanization
These future blocks will complete the existing urban fabric of the neighborhood which is booming
these blocks will fit into the urban fabric without attacking the city
they weave links with the surrounding streets by a sensitive treatment of the spaces

Courtesy of Frédéric Haesevoets ArchitectureTo better succeed in our project and to ensure its viability, we propose a more global reflection above the competition framework by integrating the new park, the new place and offering a public emblematic building, creating a new public-spirited axis between the town square the new square created in the project. As part of our thinking we bring a contemporary response, while integrating the project into the urban fabric of the existing city center.
Courtesy of Frédéric Haesevoets ArchitectureOur project of eco-neighborhood in Andenne is a place to live, exchange and sharing, through spaces both rational, hierarchical and dynamic like a real urban planning:
Courtesy of Frédéric Haesevoets Architecture- The light is found in every home
- The architectural space is generous and pleasant
olfactory and visual - Communication between users is natural
it is favored by shared spaces (public square
Human beings are at the center of the project. The eco-neighborhood of Andenne, just like a city, allows a variety of residential buildings to organize and articulate, in connection with the breakthrough, the new park, around particular places, the new public square and multimedia center.

The term over-indebtedness is used when someone no longer has sufficient resources to cope with the financial obligations accumulated
a change in family circumstances – but all give rise to one and the same feeling: the anxiety that comes with bills piling up
the people who find themselves in this position are able to seek help from professionals: debt mediators
the cost of electricity in Belgium has risen by 50 per cent since last year and the cost of domestic heating oil by almost 95 per cent
If we add to this the economic impact of the two-year global pandemic
the risks of households finding themselves over-indebted are very real
In the 1990s, European countries decided to create provisions to allow over-indebted individuals to request a debt settlement plan. Denmark was the first, in 1984, followed by France, in 1989, with the Neiertz law
which introduced departmental commissions to examine the over-indebtedness of individuals
with a view to encouraging amicable settlements and to take pressure off the courts
It was in 1998 that Belgium decided to regulate the collective settlement of debts and introduced the post of debt mediator
The mediator’s role is to set up a debt settlement plan by re-establishing the dialogue between the debtor and creditors
that the mediator be impartial and independent of the parties concerned
Nathalie Carré and Marie Warnier run the debt mediation service at the CPAS in the city of Andenne
They have been colleagues and friends for 20 years and are both social workers
This is one of the few professions allowed to practice as debt mediators
ministerial officers and judicial representatives
To be officially admitted to the profession
they had to complete a ten-day training course
“Any individual who has at least one debt can contact us
She tells us: “I had a café that was doing very well until the smoking ban law was passed
With the legendary slowness of the Belgian administration
I had to wait a year before the ruling on my bankruptcy was pronounced and 14 months before I received my unemployment benefit
I had a bailiff knocking on my door every day.”
“I was afraid of waking up in the morning because I didn’t know who would be knocking on my door
That’s when I phoned a debt mediator and told her I couldn’t cope anymore.”
the first step is to fill in a form on which you list your resources and fixed monthly outgoings
establishments or institutions to whom money is owed
Even personal debts (money owed to a relative
It is a time-consuming but necessary step towards establishing a clearer picture of the situation and the strategy to be taken
“It is very important to list the original creditor
Some people receive letters from different bailiffs from the same office and don’t even know which credit it refers to
we have to notify each original creditor of the plan
not the intermediaries [editor’s note: bailiffs],” adds Warnier
Carré and Warnier use this summary sheet to draw up a debt settlement plan that has to be validated by each of the creditors
the law provides for two courses of action: the amicable procedure
The two procedures have the same objective: to redress the debtors’ financial situation while ensuring that they and their families can continue to live with human dignity
collective debt settlement is a legal procedure with a stricter framework
including the freezing of costs and interest throughout the process and the suspension of seizures
this principle does not apply to amicable mediation
who always tries to encourage this type of settlement
this freeze would also be applicable in amicable settlements
I sincerely believe that it would save us from having to resort to collective debt settlement
not because an amicable plan is impossible
I can’t draw up a budget when the person I am mediating with comes back to me and says that their furniture has been seized
my mediator called to tell me that I didn’t have to worry anymore,” says Maryse
who was officially able to clear her debts after five years of mediation
she had several back-breaking jobs and did not emerge unscathed from the ordeal
“Debt mediation made me feel safer in the sense that I no longer had bailiffs knocking on my door but I was still under daily pressure
with my mediator asking me to provide her with so much paperwork
to sign so many agreements and constantly asking me where I was in my job search
because I had come to a point in my life where I was really thinking of taking my children in my arms and leaving everything behind.”
“We still have to keep up the preventive work with the public
We need to break the taboo surrounding money
And why not include a course on budget management as part of all studies
That would be really useful,” insists Warnier
which brings them face to face with great human distress
the two women have not lost their good spirits and the passion that drives them
When asked about the difficult aspects of the work
“What’s hard is to see people you’ve helped come back
It’s difficult because it puts your role and your usefulness into question
And then there are all those people you see struggling to get by
who are really doing their best and for whom it doesn’t work
seem to have had a positive impact in recent years on the number of households becoming over-indebted
a number that has been declining over the past six years
the health crisis and its side effects have not led to a spike in over-indebtedness in Belgium
which may be due to the temporary deferral of payments granted by some creditors in the context of the Covid-19 crisis and to a reduction in household spending during the lockdowns
feared by experts from the sector for 2022 and the years to follow

Five suspects have been arrested in the investigation into an incident on Friday night in which a Romanian truck driver lost his life
The trucker died after a drain cover was thrown through the windscreen of his lorry from a bridge over the E42 motorway
The Namur public prosecutor's office says that 2 of the 5 suspects are minors
The Namur public prosecutor's office says that 5 people, 3 adults and 2 minors, have been arrested. They are currently being questioned. Given the weight of the drain cover it seems unlikely that only one person threw it off the bridge.
An Examining Magistrate has been assigned to the case. Footage from nearby surveillance cameras is currently being analysed. The case is being treated as murder. No further details have been released as yet.

A Romanian lorry driver has died after a metal drain cover that had been thrown from a bridge crashed through the windscreen of his truck
The man was driving along the E42 motorway between Héron (Liège Province) and Andenne (Namur province) on Friday night
The Namur public prosecutor's office says that the drain was thrown from the bridge at around 1.30am
The drain cover went straight through the windscreen of the truck
The 50-year-old lorry driver died instantly
His girlfriend that was a passenger in the lorry was not injured
In an interview with the Francophone commercial broadcaster RTL the Mayor of Héron Eric Hautphenne (socialist) said that the incident was a real tragedy “All the more so because the man’s son was following close behind in another truck”
The public prosecutor says that the initial findings of the investigation point to it having been a deliberate act
The case is therefore being treated as murder and the public prosecutor is calling on witnesses to come forward
Mayor Hautphenne too said that this was a criminal act and that he hopes that those responsible will be found quickly

The mystery of a woman who vanished without a trace has been solved thanks to a Google Maps image
An image captured by a Google Street View car has now helped solve the mystery of a woman with Alzheimer’s who disappeared
Belgian woman Paulette Landrieux went missing on 2 November 2020 after last being seen by her husband and carer at their home in Andenne
Her family members believed she may have fallen into the Meuse River close to their home
Landrieux’s body was recovered two years later just metres from her house
it was only thanks to the bizarre coincidence of a Google Street View car passing at the exact time she went missing that she was found at all
It was the first time the Google car had visited her street, Rue Reppe, in 11 years. The images captured by the 360-degree camera unwittingly captured Landrieux walking down a set of steps towards her neighbour’s garden while her husband was busy hanging washing, The Mirror reports
The images were found when an amateur sleuth had been attempting to retrace her possible steps
the 83-year-old woman could be seen crossing the road dressed in a white jumper and black trousers
police resumed their search and tragically found the remains of Landrieux at the bottom of a hill right below the garden of the property opposite her home
Authorities concluded that she must have fallen and tragically died

The lockdown of recent months has demonstrated the importance of having a reliable Internet connection
To meet this growing need for connectivity
with the aim of covering 70% of households in Belgium by 2028
Proximus is also improving its existing VDSL infrastructure
Nokia and Proximus engineers have teamed up to develop 2MX6 technology
which allows the servicing of twice as many customers in a single street cabinet
while doubling the speed of broadband Internet and reducing energy consumption
This innovation has just been deployed in real conditions for the first time in the world in Andenne
it will be rolled out in hundreds of additional street cabinets
It doesn’t happen every day for Belgium to host a technological world first
It was in this Walloon city that Proximus and Nokia carried out the unprecedented installation of a new piece of equipment that will seriously boost all copper networks in the world in the years to come
who have been working together on technological innovation projects for more than 20 years
have joined forces to develop equipment that boosts both the speed and capacity of the ROPs (Remote Optical Platforms)
the street cabinets in which the copper cables coming from consumers' homes are connected to the Proximus network via fiber
the new Nokia equipment makes it possible to double the maximum potential number of customers connected to a street cabinet
It also paves the way for a significant increase in the speed of VDSL connectivity
enabling ultra-fast broadband to be delivered at twice the speed
This will allow an enhanced experience for more customers
these improvements can be achieved without the slightest inconvenience to the neighborhood: miniaturization of electronics makes it possible to insert this high-performance equipment into existing street cabinets without the need to install a new cabinet
thus making it possible to accommodate more customers without any street works
which is based on the Quillion chip developed by Nokia
the Quillion chip also reduces power consumption
This is particularly important for Proximus
one of whose key priorities is the reduction of its ecological footprint
Andenne is therefore the very first location in the world to benefit from this technological innovation
also referred to as "ultra-dense vectorization"
The engineers at Proximus and Nokia do not intend to leave it at that
The goal is to insert the same equipment in hundreds of street cabinets in the coming months and years
This is obviously good news for Proximus customers
but also for the customers of all alternative operators who use the Proximus network
Their customers will also benefit from the improved VDSL ultravectoring connectivity
Our absolute priority is the fiber roll-out
to achieve 70% Fiber-To-The-Home coverage of the population by 2028
Proximus rolled out fiber to an additional 73,000 buildings
extending its fiber coverage to 533,000 households and businesses
it is important to us that consumers who do not have direct access to fiber can also benefit from high-speed Internet
This highlights the importance of this technology
developed with Nokia and rolled out for the first time in Andenne
It is the densest and fastest copper solution that can be inserted into a street cabinet
we are able to bring more bandwidth to more people
Proximus and Nokia have been developing joint innovations for 20 years to get the most out of copper networks in combination with fiber
We have already raised the bar in recent years with VDSL and then with vectoring
but now we are going one step further with this new equipment for street cabinets
we were able to design this unique solution
which doubles the speed and accommodates twice as many customers in a single street cabinet
This makes the need for a second street cabinet obsolete forever

BEL) - Belgium champion Philippe Gilbert of the Omega Pharma team won the third stage of the Eneco Tour on Thursday to take the overall race lead from American Taylor Phinney of BMC
Gilbert made the decisive break seven kilometres from the line to cross the line alone several seconds ahead of Slovenian Grega Bole and Belgian Ben Hermans
It is the fifteenth success this season for Gilbert who holds a six-second lead on Norway's Edvald Boasson Hagen with Scotland's David Millar 14 seconds off the pace
"It was a very difficult final because there was a lot of head wind in the final five kilometres
And then it was a bit like Omega Pharma against the rest
It's obviously an advantage," explained the world number two
Friday's fourth stage is a 14.7km time-trial at Roermond in the Netherlands
"It will be very complicated against the individual specialists in particular against Edvald Boasson Hagen," warned Gilbert

A woman who had seemingly vanished into thin air was found after a Google Maps car tracked her final steps
Paulette Landrieux, who had Alzheimer's, disappeared without a trace in November 2020 having last been seen by her husband
A search party was subsequently launched, which involved helicopters with thermal vision, drones, and even sniffer dogs
The local police force issued a missing person report stating that Landrieux was a 'potentially confused woman' who would often knock on her neighbour's homes - which will only add to how surreal her disappearance was and eventual discovery
Landrieux wandered out of her home and began walking across the road - at the exact time a Google Maps car was collating fresh imagery from her street
It was the first time Google had visited her road in 11 years
and the search engines 'Street View' captures her climbing the stairs down to her neighbour's garden
her husband was hanging washing up in the garden - with the Google Maps car also capturing him doing so in the same shot through a 360 degree panoramic image
two years went by without any success as to where the 83-year-old could be
with her family members assuming that she must have fallen in to the Meuse River
which is located a short walk behind their garden
It took a sleuth attempting to retrace her steps through Google Maps and Google Street View to finally come across footage of her crossing the road in a white jumper and black trousers
Following the discovery, police refreshed their search
this time to look in the garden of the property opposite to her home
Landrieux was found at the bottom of a hill right below her neighbour's garden
with investigations concluding she had fallen from an open section of the garden and tragically died shortly after taking the tumble
Taking to Reddit
users were in disbelief that it took years for Landrieux to be discovered a matter of a hundred or so meters from her house
"There was a large scale search and she was found in her neighbour’s garden
Another typed: "I can’t believe they only found her because Google maps showed her crossing the street
others were shocked at the timing from the Google Maps car
One user commented: "Are we are to assume those photos were taken on the day she went missing
Another replied: "Not just the day she went missing
If it had been 10 seconds earlier she would just be in her walkway and it wouldn’t give any clues."
