For those who have patiently waited for the inevitable war to commence between the Harrigans and the Stevensons
While the murder of Tommy Stevenson did not seem to truly move the needle as far as their already heated relationship was concerned
and some choice words at Tommy’s funeral appeared to finally kick it into high gear
Maeve continued to play all her chess pieces to near perfection
the episode was all about getting the family together in order to keep them safe
some were certainly more jazzed about it than others
as they faced the reality of the world in which they were living
Seraphina and Brendan were off doing their own thing
having everyone believe that they had gone rogue
Arguably making themselves into east targets
of course it would be up to Harry to rescue them but would they need to be
it’s hard to blame them for even trying to do something to help
Following the sudden explosion of Vron Stevenson’s car
the focus of the Harrigans was to ensure their safety
anticipating a response from the Stevensons
rather than taking time to assess the situation
making his second appearance at the mechanic shop
Donnie (Alex Fine) finally got Harry’s attention after mentioning who his boss was
Upon hearing the news of what had happened
Jan is used to it (bonding over her situation with Bella)
the episode did not waste any time with revealing who was responsible for the bomb
if Conrad is to be believed (it was clearly Maeve)
it was up to Harry and his team to find them
executing the former’s diamond deal under the steady eye of Seraphina
Harry was off to retrace their steps so he could find them before it was too late
but their biggest threat may not be the Stevensons
Maeve would throw Brendan and Seraphina under the bus by giving their whereabouts to her old friend Richie
though not the perfect situation by any means for Jan and Gina Da Souza
it did not take long for them to be turned off by their new surroundings
the former was not going to let her daughter fall under his clutches
Brendan would show his true colors as his insecurity manifested itself in an outburst spawning out of his need to not be upstaged by his sister (Seraphina was well aware of her business partner’s many flaws)
it met her standards but the deal may not go any further
a hit team arrived to eliminate everyone on site
In a war that will surely lead to casualties on both sides
the most pressing issue is whether or not Maeve will get away with it
Helen Mirren shines at the conniving Harrigan matriarch but she can’t stay in the shadows forever

The national authorities and the Port of Antwerp—Bruges began preparations on Monday afternoon
in order to bring the port traffic to an orderly stop
They said 25 ships were waiting to depart with another 31 waiting to enter
but expected that all traffic would be halted
The strike began Monday evening at 1930 and will continue till 0730 on Wednesday
As of Tuesday afternoon, Antwerp-Bruges is reporting that a total of 74 ships are now waiting. In Antwerp, 38 vessels were unable to depart while on the North Sea, 36 vessels are waiting, all heading for Antwerp. Ships are unable to pass the lock at Scheldt, but unlike the strike last month
the unions are not stopping work in the other main seaport of Zeebrugge
“The general strike of March 31 was a success
but the measures proposed by the government remain unpalatable,” said FGTB
one of Belgium’s unions and organizers of today’s stoppage along with the AVC
“We must keep up the pressure and push for change.”
Today’s actions were focused on Antwerp and Brussels as well as regional centers around the country including Ghent
In addition to stopping vessel movements at the Port of Antwerp
All departures are again suspended at Brussels Airport as well as more than half the arrivals
The unions continue to protest planned changes by the new collation government that center on pensions
and budget cuts to the public service sector
AVC issued a list of demands saying workers are entitled to free and fair wage negotiations
and that there should be better flexibility for workers to have family time
The unions are calling for a minimum of five weeks of legal holiday for everyone
Media reports indicate that at least 100 ships a day are using the port for access to the inland routes. During the strike at the end of March, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges estimated the backlog at over 50 ships, but since then port data showed Antwerp had become the busiest container port in Europe
It surpassed Rotterdam in total volume during March

2025 – TotalEnergies’ Antwerp platform provides an update on its investments for the future and announces plan to reconfigure its petrochemicals operations to strengthen competitiveness
A key industrial site for TotalEnergies for more than 75 years
the Antwerp platform is based on an integrated business model
which guarantees the resilience of its operations
“By adapting and investing regularly in our Antwerp site
we’re securing its long-term future and ensuring that this integrated refining and petrochemicals platform remains TotalEnergies’ most efficient in Europe
Whether the aim is to meet market challenges or contribute to decarbonization and the energy transition
the platform can be reconfigured so that it remains competitive and continues to provide jobs well into the future,” said Ann Veraverbeke
Managing Director of TotalEnergies Antwerp
Thanks to the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Antwerp will contribute to its aviation customers’ energy transition, helping them meet the challenge of reducing their carbon footprint. An initial project to produce 50,000 tons a year of SAF via coprocessing will be implemented at the Antwerp platform in 2025. Coprocessing is a SAF production method that enables the simultaneous treatment of hydrocarbons and biomass in a conventional refining unit.
Thanks to process electrification and battery-based energy storage, the platform is contributing respectively to the decarbonization of its industrial operations and to the growing need to balance Belgian and European high-voltage transmission grids. With a power rating of 25 MW and capacity of 75 MWh, Antwerp’s battery storage system is TotalEnergies’ biggest in Europe. Commissioned last year, it helps offset the intermittency of renewable energies to encourage their development.
Alongside these future-focused developments, the Antwerp platform is also facing considerable overcapacity in the petrochemicals market. In the light of the significant surplus of ethylene expected in Europe, TotalEnergies thus intends to cease operating its oldest steam cracker in Antwerp by end-2027.
Indeed, the latter was historically dependent on a major contract with a third-party user of the ethylene produced, which recently decided not to renew it by end 2027. As a result, the steam cracker, which is not integrated to TotalEnergies' downstream polymer production, will no longer have any outlets for its ethylene production.
The unit shutdown will allow the site to focus on its more recent steam cracker, whose ethylene production is entirely consumed by TotalEnergies' industrial units in Antwerp and Feluy. The reconfiguration will be conducted without any layoffs.
The 253 employees concerned will each be offered a solution aligned with their personal situation: retirement or an internal transfer to another position based at the Antwerp site. This project is subject to the legally required employee consultation and notification process, which TotalEnergies will initiate with representatives of Antwerp platform employees in late April.
TotalEnergies is a global integrated energy company that produces and markets energies: oil and biofuels, natural gas, biogas and low-carbon hydrogen, renewables and electricity. Our more than 100,000 employees are committed to provide as many people as possible with energy that is more reliable, more affordable and more sustainable. Active in about 120 countries, TotalEnergies places sustainability at the heart of its strategy, its projects and its operations.

TotalEnergies SE plans to permanently shut down the older of two ethylene-producing flexible steam crackers at the operator’s 338,000-b/d integrated refining and petrochemical platform in Antwerp
The decision to shutter the steam cracker—which is not integrated into the site’s downstream polymer production—follows nonrenewal of an offtake agreement for the unit’s ethylene production by a long-term
leaving no outlets for the cracker’s ethylene output
Given the cancelled offtake contract amid ongoing projections for a sustained oversupply of ethylene to the European market
TotalEnergies said it will cease operating Antwerp’s elder steam cracker by yearend 2027 to focus on operation of the site’s newest cracker
which currently produces ethylene feedstock for the company’s existing Belgian petrochemical plants both at Antwerp and Feluy
The Feluy site consumes ethylene to produce high-performance polymers and includes production units for polypropylene
Contingent upon a legally required employee consultation and notification process TotalEnergies will begin in late April with representatives of the Antwerp platform’s employees
the proposed cracker shutdown and reconfiguration project would occur without any layoffs of the 253 potentially impacted employees
Each of the affected employees will be “offered a solution aligned with their personal situation: retirement or an internal transfer to another position based at the Antwerp site,” TotalEnergies said
The Antwerp platform’s two steam crackers—the older of which was upgraded in 2017 to flexibly process ethane, butane, or naphtha as feedstock—have combined capacity to produce 1.1 million tonnes/year (tpy) of ethylene (OGJ Online, July 7, 2017)
The planned unit closure also aligns with TotalEnergies’ long-term transformational strategy of gradually pivoting operations away from its traditional oil and gas history in alignment with its aim to achieve carbon neutrality across the entirety of its businesses by 2050 (OGJ Online, Feb. 18, 2025)
“By adapting and investing regularly in our Antwerp site
we’re securing its long-term future and ensuring that this integrated refining and petrochemicals platform remains TotalEnergies’ most efficient in Europe,” said Ann Veraverbeke
TotalEnergies Antwerp’s managing director
“Whether the aim is to meet market challenges or contribute to decarbonization and the energy transition
the platform can be reconfigured so that it remains competitive and continues to provide jobs well into the future,” Veraverbeke added

Delays in Antwerp may just be the beginning
with analysts warning that Chinese cargo originally bound for the US may flood already squeezed ports in northern Europe
sparking significant congestion by mid-June
INDUSTRIAL action across Belgium brought its principal port of Antwerp to a near standstill this week
prompting new highs of vessel bottlenecks in northern Europe where delays have been a feature in recent weeks
as Antwerp begins the process of clearing the backlogs
there are concerns the events in Belgium could be the calm before the storm
ahead of what one analyst described as potential “carnage” in the weeks ahead if Chinese cargo previously bound for the US is diverted to European shores
Xeneta chief analyst Peter Sand told Lloyd’s List the concern for importers and exporters was there could be much worse to come.
you can see some of the Chinese manufactured goods not crossing the Pacific may end up in Europe
if ports have not sorted this out by then it will be carnage
but it could get worse six weeks from now.”
The coming weeks could therefore be critical as operators scramble to stabilise supply chains
While disruption has plagued ports across northern Europe since early March
events in Belgium saw the largest vessel queues to date this year
the port of Antwerp-Bruges reported more than 100 ships either awaiting clearance to berth or leave terminals
On Thursday morning, 0900 hrs local time, Lloyd’s List Intelligence vessel tracking also showed over 20 containerships at the north and south entrance of the Scheldt river in the North Sea at anchor
Strikes in Antwerp began on Monday evening and continued into the early hours of Wednesday morning
as part of pre-emptive industrial action throughout Belgium
with workers from the private and public sectors leaving their post in unison to protest against the government’s budgets cuts
On Tuesday, the port of Antwerp, which was Europe’s busiest box port in the first quarter of 2025, ahead of Rotterdam
was effectively shut with “up and downstream… completely blocked for both sea and inland navigation”
nearly all vessels awaiting clearance are scheduled to either depart or sail into Antwerp before the close of the week
The remaining 19 were still to receive fixed scheduling information
“We are adjusting the vessel schedule based on the available chain capacity
there is currently a shortage of sea and river pilots,” the port authority said
a handful of vessels still have no prospect of a time of embarkation or disembarkation
All chain partners are making the necessary efforts to restore normal shipping traffic as soon as possible.”
Making matters worse is that May 1 is also a public holiday in Belgium
a factor that is expected to slow the process of clearing backlogs given limited wharf staff.
Shipping traffic through Zeebrugge — home to Europe’s largest ro-ro terminal
which was exempt from strike action — is operating as normal
Port officials from Antwerp expect backlogs to be cleared by the weekend
This week’s delays in Antwerp come as ports across northern Europe continue to battle varying degrees of congestion.
This carrier game of musical chairs has led to an increase in port calls
while disrupting established flows and led to numerous cases of so-called “double-dipping”
extending berthing times as vessels carry out discharge and loading operations simultaneously.
Compounding the issue further has been low water levels on continental hinterland arteries that has limited barge capacity
putting pressure on the already squeezed road and rail networks on the continent
This is on top of the strikes not just in Belgium but also in France
the scene of intermittent port strikes throughout the opening months of the year
the perfect storm to stir congestion has been how all of this also come off the back an unprecedented surge in traffic at the start of 2025
particularly on the trunk Asia-Europe trade
Official figures from Container Trade Statistics showed box volumes on the route up more than 20% in January
Although container numbers fell back in February
trade was still up more than 7% through the first two months on last year
the ports were not ready for this cargo onslaught
Sand said as the Chinese New Year fell a month earlier than last year this could explain at least some of the uptick in January because of the typical pre-holiday rush
the tail off in February was nowhere near as expected and is largely disconnected from the underlying economics in Europe
he suggested that the new year may have prompted a reset for some companies
who saw front-loading as their best option given the disruption of recent years
he said shippers may be hedging their bets on yet more disruption on liner trades in the months ahead
so it made good business sense to ensure cargoes arrive ahead of schedule
but still also on the Houthi side in the Middle East
I think some of those factors must come into consideration,” said Sand
Carriers have warned customers of increasing congestion levels in northern Europe in recent weeks. In an advisory on April 17, Maersk informed its customers of operational disruption across Northern Europe, highlighting not only Antwerp but neighbouring Bremerhaven
Earlier this week, HMM also advised of heavy port congestion across the continent, noting berth delays of up to three days in Antwerp, and up to three and a half days in both Rotterdam and Hamburg.
the knock-on impact on other port majors in the region has been minimal with disruption largely localised
A spokesperson for Hapag-Lloyd said two of its vessels had been affected by the port closure and subsequent delays and had since left the port
while services are largely unaffected arriving and leaving on time
They noted too that its schedules also have inbuilt buffers in case of delays such of these
A spokesperson for the Port of Rotterdam Authority told Lloyd’s List that the Dutch port had still to witness any material impact from the strikes of its Belgian neighbour
Further north, the number of ships positioned at the Helgoland Bay anchorage awaiting entry into the German ports of Bremerhaven, Hamburg or Wilhelmshaven has increased from six vessels to 10 since the start of the week
Lloyd’s List Intelligence vessel-tracking data shows

Antwerp-Bruges released its first quarter throughput performance highlighting the strength of its container business while reporting an overall decline largely driven by a sharp decrease in bulk volumes
Container throughput however was up 4.6 percent in tonnage and 4.5 percent in TEUs
the Port of Rotterdam which has long dominated in Europe reported a 2.2 percent increase in TEUs to 3,364,000
The Belgian port said the growth came amidst the transition to the new alliances among liner companies
industrial actions including a paralyzing port strike
which also contributed to longer container dwell times for Antwerp-Bruges
Rotterdam said its tonnage decreased due to an eight percent decline in loaded exports
a decline in the number of transshipment containers
and an operational dispute at one of its terminals which resulted in fewer ship visits
Antwerp-Bruges handled 67.7 million tonnes of cargo
citing the weak performance in the bulk categories
Liquid cargo recorded the sharpest decline
falling by 19.1 percent impacted by gasoline
The segment is not only feeling the impact of sanctions against Russia and the struggling European petrochemical sector but has also been hit by changing market conditions in Africa
Belgium’s ban on high-sulfur and benzene fuels exports to Africa is having material negative effects on shipments
Rotterdam also reported an overall 5.8 percent decline in first quarter throughput
It said the decline was also mostly due to less throughput of crude oil and oil products
“We are in particularly uncertain times
which makes it difficult to predict what 2025 will bring next
our port is showing resilience and operational reliability,” said Jacques Vandermeiren

as well as auto and machinery parts (mostly from Germany)
Executives at the Port of Rotterdam expressed similar concerns
They noted that import duties imposed by the United States on goods exported from Europe had yet to have an effect on first-quarter throughput but were creating uncertainty

I was born in Ghent and first came to Antwerp to study at the city’s ballet school more than 15 years ago
I had to give up dancing after I started to experience physical difficulties in my final year
but was lucky to find another passion in jewellery soon after moving here
Antwerp is known as the diamond capital of the world and we are fortunate to have some of the best ateliers and dealers in the city
so there is a lot of knowledge and craftsmanship when it comes to jewellery

from artists such as Peter Paul Rubens and Rinus Van de Velde to fashion photographer Willy Vanderperre and designer Pieter Mulier
There’s a tolerance and openness that makes it a very inspiring place to live

The Royal Museum of Fine Arts has one of the biggest collections of [Belgian painter James] Ensor in the world
so you can really take your time and stroll around
There are also contemporary galleries such as Tim Van Laere and Axel Vervoordt’s cultural complex about a 15-minute drive from the city
It often has interesting events and presentations from the artists he represents – it’s definitely worth a visit if you have time
we’re very spoilt: there are always new things popping up

which is something I try to combine in my work
Something most tourists don’t know is that the cathedral in the centre of the city has a garden
It’s the best place to relax because it’s walled
There are always new things to discover in Antwerp and the people are adventurous here – they dare to take risks and build their own stories
it might be one of Europe’s smaller cities but it’s a very vibrant one with a lot of creativity
Design and craft are still at the core of the city
which gives it a certain energy and a feeling that people can be free and fully themselves

The Antwerp refining and petrochemicals platform is our largest integrated complex in Europe
To meet growing global demand and address new market trends
we have upgraded and adapted the site to focus production on higher added-value products that meet the most stringent environmental standards
Read on for an overview of the characteristics of the Antwerp platform and the main projects carried out at the site
To keep pace with the latest changes in the European market
we decided in 2013 to invest more than €1 billion to upgrade the Antwerp complex
Our objectives were to respond to market demand by supplying more light products that meet the strictest environmental standards
make the complex more flexible so that it can use the most cost-advantaged feedstocks available and increase synergies between refining and petrochemicals
Inaugurated in November 2017
allowing it to produce ever more recycled plastics featuring the same properties as virgin polymers
Situated in an urban area subject to water stress
the Antwerp complex was our first refining and chemicals site to approve a large-scale project in 2022 to reduce its freshwater withdrawals
The project involves reusing treated wastewater from local households to supply the industries in the port of Antwerp
The process of building a water treatment plant and adapting the complex's internal networks (additional pipes
This initiative is part of the Flemish government's Blue Deal program to combat drought and water shortages in the region
It will enable the complex to reduce its drinking water use by over 9 million cubic meters a year
or almost 65% of its freshwater withdrawals
This represents the consumption of 280,000 Antwerp residents out of a total population of 620,000
