Belgian riders Marion Norbert Riberolle and Alicia Franck complete podium at midweek home cyclocross race
Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Fenix-Deceuninck) soloed to victory in Ardooie at Kermiscross on Thursday
A trio of Belgian riders were lined out behind the former World and Dutch champion
with Marion Norbert Riberolle (Crelan-Corendon) taking second
and Alicia Franck (De Ceuster-Bouwpunt) securing third
Julie Brouwers (Charles Liégeois Roastery CX)
sprinted ahead of Dutch rider Denise Betsema (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) for fourth place
the two dropping off the pace in the final laps and riding across the line a little more than a minute-and-a-half back
A lead group of nine riders remained together through the first half of the race until Alvarado increased the pace to make an initial separation.
With three laps to go she was alone at the front
leaving Norbert Riberolle and Franck to chase
They were the only two to keep Alvarado in their sights for a time
until the Dutch rider stretched her advantage
“At one point I accelerated without really attacking and hoped to get a few riders with me
But I was suddenly alone and so I had to continue solo," Alvarado told Het Nieuwsblad after her victory.
You could never recover on this muddy surface
otherwise you would come to a complete standstill
I would have preferred a slightly better running surface today

A cucumber grower running out of cucumbers in the middle of the season is a sign that something has gone wrong
found themselves in this situation due to a problem with their substrate
a tough decision had to be made: all the plants and the substrate mats were removed from the greenhouse
and our appetite is stronger than ever," Willem shared on July 20
as he held the first cucumber in his hands again
they had been without production in Ardooie for just under a month
Crooked and pointy"The roots didn't take well to our perlite substrate this year," Willem explained
This was confirmed by their cultivation consultant and an agricultural expert who were called in
the roots grew around the substrate instead of into it
This left us with no buffer and prevented the plant from growing properly
they had been successfully growing on perlite for years in Ardooie
"We could have continued growing and started watering heavily
but that would have risked destroying the roots."
Organic substrateIn search of a quick solution
the growers switched to a different substrate from a different supplier
they chose Greenfibre substrate from Klasmann-Deilmann
The plants were doing well on the organic substrate by mid-August
so we are already seeing gains in the number of units we harvest and also in watering efficiency."
Late planting dateBecause of the late planting date
the cucumber crop grew quickly immediately after planting
though still slower than if planted before May
they grow cucumbers continuously from April to November in the 8,000 m² greenhouse
but we were still able to harvest cucumbers three weeks after planting."
When we called Willem on Wednesday afternoon
he was listening to a podcast about caravans
"That's a very different business from greenhouse farming," noted the relieved grower
Growing plants is really different from caravans
We are very happy with the quick delivery and flexibility from our suppliers."
Good pricesWith cucumber cultivation temporarily suspended
the company missed out on just under a month of production
By possibly continuing with the current cucumber crop a little longer
Willem expects to be able to compensate for some of the loss
we might have had to take the car to the auction because we would have had very little production."
Good cucumber prices in mid-August are also satisfying
"The fact that prices are good now is a bonus
Company takeoverIt was cucumbers that really sparked Willem's interest in the growing business
"That's also why it's so important to me that we quickly got back into production," he said
he plans to take over his parents' business
The temporary disruption in cucumber production did not affect this plan
There is a set number of months for that process
We have been working on the takeover for a while."
"I've seen again that growing doesn't happen automatically

Belgian U23 champion Witse Meeussen takes third in Ardooie
European cyclocross champion Michael Vanthourenhout won Kermiscross in Ardooie on Thursday
riding three seconds ahead of Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal teammate Eli Iserbyt.
Witse Meeussen (Crelan-Corendon) confirmed a Belgian sweep of the podium riding 10 seconds back for third
The reigning U23 Belgian champion avoided technical issues after last week suffering three punctures at Exact Cross Beringen
who was second in Beringen in his opening cyclocross race of the year
escaped at the front of the race with his teammate and Meeussen on the final lap
creating a gap to the duo on the final turns
"I chose to pace myself and only give it my all at the end
It quickly became clear that Iserbyt and myself were just a little bit better
so we had to wait until the right moment to accelerate
We did that just before the start of the final lap," he told Het Nieuwsblad
one with a slightly higher tyre pressure in case it would come to a sprint
but above all because I could take a little more risk in the corners compared to the others
That turned out to be a very good move," said Vanthourenhout
The podium trio were part of a lead group of nine riders mid-way through the race
mainly due to the hard pace set by the Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal pair
Iserbyt recovered from his disqualification a week ago in Beringen
where he reacted to former teammate Ryan Kamp after a crash and stomped on his bike
The Belgian elite men's champion said he had "a few difficult days" afterwards
but that the crowd at the race Wednesday was "respectful" and he was able to focus on the job at hand.
Max Walscheid third on flat finish into Ardooie
kicking away from Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) from the wheel of the Belgian’s lead-out man’ Mathieu van der Poel before holding his lead all the way to the line in Ardooie
Philipsen got his positioning all wrong in the final kilometre as he was forced to move up in the wheels to get up to Milan
who was waiting in Van der Poel’s slipstream to pounce
Philipsen had to go the long way round his teammate and was unable to close the gap
The pair had a clear gap on Max Walscheid (Jayco AlUla) who took third
as the two best sprinters left in this race
Milan continued his dominance with an 11th win of the season and seventh at WorldTour level
I was looking to do a nice result like this so we are all happy and I have to say thanks to all the team,” said Milan after the victory
but they helped me in the best way as possible during the race so I’m proud of all of us and the work that we did today."
While freestyling for much of the final few hundred metres on the wheel of Van der Poel
Milan was aided brilliantly by Jasper Stuyven who did a “perfect” job to position him at the front of proceedings before the sprint
we knew it was crucial to take the chicane in the front position and he did super
super work to leave me in the front for sprinting so I’m just happy.”
Milan said he wasn’t going to think too much about the GC
he did cut his deficit to overall leader Alec Segaert (Lotto Dstny) to 23 seconds with two stages remaining and a possible bunch sprint on stage 4
Segaert finished safely in the bunch to maintain a 7-second lead on Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) in second
But there is still a lot of tough terrain to navigate in the last two days
with possible strong winds coming tomorrow en route from Oostburg to Aalter and a brutally tough Classics stage still to race on stage 5 to Geraardsbergen
With an almost guaranteed sprint stage on the cards at stage 3 of the Renewi Tour
the opening phases saw a similar break to that from stage 1 go up the road
with two of the five men from day one getting back in the break
Joining them to make up the five were Aaron van Poucke
Ward Vanhoof (Team Flanders-Baloise) and Warre Vangheluwe (Soudal-QuickStep)
with the break building a gap of more than three minutes
It became an all-Belgian breakaway when Frenchman Huens dropped back to the peloton inside the final kilometre
with the now four in front closing in on the local circuits around the finish in Ardooie
where they crossed the finish line for the first of six times with a 2:40 lead
With Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) joining the likes of Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla) and Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) on the list of headline sprinters to leave the Renewi Tour
Alpecin-Dceuninck and Lotto Dstny took up the mantle of pacing for Milan
The gap to the break fell below the minute mark in the chase inside the final 35km and when they reached the green kilometre and the final 20km
Vanhoof took the maximum nine seconds on offer from the three sprint points having started the day as the closest on GC
bringing his gap down from 59 to 50 seconds on Segaert
The peloton got the bell in Ardooie under 30 seconds behind the faltering break and it was all but done before the certain sprint finish
outside of a final late burst by local lad Vangheluwe off the front with 12km to go
Vangheluwe eked out a lead as big as 20 seconds but had no chance when the full lead-outs started behind
with his effort eventually extinguished with 4km to go by the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale and Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe-led peloton
The washing machine effect saw the leaders of the peloton change several times in the run for home
with both Lidl-Trek and Alpecin-Deceuninck controlling things at times for their top sprinters
it was Milan who had found the wheel of the World Champion Van der Poel
allowing the Italian to benefit from the Dutchman’s expert lead-out skills and launch for the victory
Philipsen avoided crashing into Van der Poel as he went around him and hampered his sprint
he didn’t have enough top-end speed to even alongside Milan in the run for home

"There is currently solid demand for Belgian leeks
prices are actually fluctuating far too much," says Pol Dendauw of Calsa
The Flemish export company from Ardooie is optimistic about a strong leek season
the season is still marked by too much volatility in supply at the auctions," he says
and the yield for growers is also satisfactory
They've been able to achieve good kilos per hectare
but many leek growers are also committed to harvesting cauliflower for the industry during these weeks," Pol explains
they might not have time to work on the leeks for two days while harvesting cauliflower
and then they're back to leeks for three days
"I'd be happy if prices were high," Pol continues
They're not pleased if they buy at one price and the next day it's suddenly cheaper
They wonder why we couldn't just tell them in advance
we don't know either with this level of volatility."
"This fluctuation is a bit disruptive for the market
the cauliflower season for the industry will wrap up
Leek growers have had a challenging few years
they haven't had too much to complain about
demand is currently coming mainly from southern Europe
When they start harvesting their crops in a few weeks
we'll then shift our focus to northern Europe
They have their production until the end of December
the outlook for the rest of the pricing season still looks promising."

Tim Merlier and Olav Kooij go 2-3 ahead of Arnaud De Lie in Ardooie
The Belgian delivered a powerful effort to claim the spoils ahead of Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) and Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma)
Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny) opened the sprint from distance
but he had Philipsen parked on his wheel in the final kilometre
and the man of the moment would cruise to a commanding win to claim the overall lead
long-term deal with Lotto-Dstny was announced on Wednesday morning
while Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla) took fifth ahead of Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates)
Few races on the calendar command a sprint field of this depth
though there were some notable absentees from the eventual mass finish
Sam Welsford (Team dsm-firmenich) crashed just inside the final 2km
now in Arkéa-Samsic colours after his transfer from Groupama-FDJ
though he at least avoided hitting the ground
Merlier appeared to finish quicker than anyone
but the former Belgian champion had to come from a long
and he ran out of road without ever looking like getting on the terms with Philipsen
they protected me well and that was the key to success today,” Philipsen said
The opening stage of the Renewi Tour was animated by a five-man break featuring Alessandro Covi (UAE Team Emirates)
Jonas Rutsch (EF Education-EasyPost) Aaron Van Poucke (Team Flanders-Baloise)
Ceriel Desal and Ludovic Robeet (Bingoal WB)
The quintet built up a maximum lead of three minutes but with so many sprinters of note in the peloton
they were never likely to upset the odds here
As per tradition in this event under its various guises
the Ardooie finale featured five laps of a 16km circuit
and the bunch gradually whittled away at the break’s advantage as they counted down towards the finish
with Alpecin-Deceuninck and Lotto-Dstny prominent among the chasers
Rutsch and Desal were the last men standing on the penultimate lap as the bunch closed to within 15 seconds
and they succeeded in fending off the peloton and contest the Green Kilometre – previously the Golden Kilometre – of bonus sprints
Thanks to a solo effort that saw him collect 8 bonus seconds
Covi would finish the day in second place overall
though the fast men still had to navigate a tense finale
with crashes splitting the bunch with 14km to go and again inside the final 2km
remained safely tucked towards the head of affairs throughout
and he produced a fine turn of speed to claim the honours in Ardooie
The race continues on Thursday with a 13.6km individual time trial in Sluis
