absurd amount of ads we now have to scroll through to get to the comments Its a bug that developed after we upgraded the discussion section A quick tip: Easy way to skip ads is to click the number of comments link below the top article header picture Sorry to be a pain in the ass commenting about it The amount of ads on this site is unbearable People still claim this is the golden Star Trek era Yep in lieu of viewership data the best way to measure the success of these shows is through the licensing It seems to me that you are cherrypicking merchandise when you comment on licensing While some of us love a collectable like a face-palm bust and one that is targeted to long-term fandom Let’s look instead at some larger market items with less of a collectable dimension It seems as though the IDW Discovery and Picard comics have done well especially as some sold out the first-run on pre-order The Simon & Schuster tie-in novels certainly are selling well within the tie-in novel market it won’t show up as a separate financial line I see new Discovery and Picard merchandise moving Perhaps some of the vendors who post her might weigh in but I don’t hear them saying that there isn’t a market for merchandise from the new shows Discovery has already had multiple Hallmark ornaments And that’s just the things that pop into my head That seems like a good amount for supposedly having “no merch at all.” In fact it seems almost comparable to the amount of TOS and TNG merchandise Agreed — and I own several of those that you mention here they already went out of ships before they started with the Disco line I guess he just watched the season finale of Picard I thought he had just read Trekmovie’s “Gayest Moments” article I think he was just reading the daily posts from the handful of people who post at least twenty times per day here I didn’t even click on that article until now And both season finales of Discovery- I’ve been face palming for three years running That really wasn’t a signature look for Riker like it was for Picard What the heck is going on with the infinite wall of advertisments to get to the comments section or making comments as it takes way to long to scroll down to the bottom of your page due to all the garbage ads This scrolling ads thing should be fixed now maybe you need to reload the page a couple of times for the old code to wash out of your cookies I kind of wish these included the other arm… at the very least for the Riker one because… I’m not sure but something about his other arm adds to the facepalm in it for me As the USS Orville arrives to begin peace negotiations with the Krill they give asylum to an old friend of Gordon Malloy’s who is accused of terrorist attacks against the Krill Malloy’s loyalty is pulled between his oaths to the Union and his debt to his friend “Blood of Patriots” succeeds as a stand-alone episode delivering plot and character moments on its own terms decently But it falls short as an installment in a serial adventure Peace talks with the Krill in “Blood of Patriots” Warning: When in the course of a television review it becomes necessary to use SPOILERS a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires a warning “How do you follow up ‘The Best of Both Worlds Part 2’?” And the answer they’ve given—to a person—is “Family.” That’s not just a trivia question or a proof of fan credentials a glimpse at part of the genius that made Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s third and fourth season the unstoppable engine of quality that they were You go deep on the consequences of the two-parter you dive into the characters in a meaningful way to show that what happened in the two-parter meant something Parts 1 and 2” were The Orville‘s first foray into feature-length storytelling and while it didn’t quite reach the heights of “The Best of Both Worlds,” it was an impressive story reportedly the longest space battle in television history leaving the viewer just trying to catch their breath did The Orville learn the lesson of “Family” Yaphit gets a medal in “Blood and Patriots” “Blood of Patriots” opens with a ceremony investing Lt This is a great little bit of continuity to “Identity,” when Yaphit performed his heroic actions This scene indicates to the viewer that this episode is connected to “Identity” and promises that the consequences of that episode will receive treatment here That promise is reconfirmed when the celebration is interrupted by a call from Admiral Perry (Ted Danson) who orders Mercer and the Orville to rendezvous with Krill ambassadors aboard the vessel Davoro’kos (“bringer of blood”) at Tarazed 3 to begin negotiations toward the signing of a Lak’vai pact—a precursor to a formal peace treaty and something else: a damaged Krill shuttle The shuttle requests emergency docking aboard the Orville the tiny ship turns out to contain an old friend of Gordon Malloy’s Chambers is a Union officer who claims he and Leyna have been detained in a Krill prison camp for 20 years and just recently escaped The Krill claim that Chambers is responsible for the destruction of four of their warships—three in the month since the cease-fire with the Union Chambers is allegedly responsible for over 1200 deaths and the Krill want him back for interrogation and execution Mackenzie Astin plays Chambers as a man who is fiercely proud and deeply injured and maintains just enough of a sense of nobility to keep us wondering whether he is being falsely accused Scott Grimes – who is usually leaned on heavily for comic relief on The Orville –  mostly plays Malloy for the drama here letting us see his deep friendship with Chambers and the loyalty he owes to a man who saved his life at the cost of 20 years of abuse at the hands of the Krill Kudos to both of them for solid acting throughout this episode Mackenzie Astin guest stars as Chambers in “Blood of Patriots” The Krill come aboard the Orville to demand Chambers’ extradition but Mercer wants them stalled until he can figure out whether there is any validity to their claims This leads to an extended sequence in which Talla Keyali not only subjects the Krill to greater and greater humiliation requiring them to divulge personal information and eventually submit to rectal examinations one of the last episode’s small jokes I found this sequence unfunny and unworthy of the second season’s more mature tone Chambers has suffered greatly in Krill custody Malloy tells Mercer that Chambers’ wife was killed in a Krill attack on Outpost 73 when Chambers saved the lives of Malloy and a number of others by pulling them to safety after which he and his daughter disappeared Chambers has paid the price for that sacrifice for 20 years His rage and agony are well-played and feel real He is opposed to a cease-fire with the Krill The episode doesn’t pull any punches It lays out the stakes very clearly—a lasting peace with the Krill could save billions of lives according to Admiral Perry but it means sitting down at the table with people who have already killed and tortured tens of thousands of Union citizens And the Krill worldview justifies these killings They see the Union as “godless heretics by nature,” and Gordon calls them “…butchering We shouldn’t even be talking to them!” The overarching theme of the season—the question of whether or not there can be tolerance between people who differ so strongly in their worldview and values—is expressed vigorously here We also saw this theme expressed with the Moclans in “Deflectors” and “Primal Urges,” with the Kaylon in “Identity Parts 1 and 2,” and with the Krill in “Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes.” What are the limits of tolerance and I’m glad the show is taking it so seriously The Davoro’kos departs the system for no reason and demands to receive custody of Chambers upon their return or there will be no Lak’vai and no peace Ted Danson as Admiral Perry in “Blood of Patriots” When Chambers learns that the Union admirals are considering extraditing him to the Krill if he is found guilty of destroying those ships he asks Malloy to help him steal a shuttle Malloy is torn between his loyalty to Orrin and his oaths to the Union not to mention his loyalty to Ed Mercer and the crew of the Orville this theme contrasts with the actions that Isaac took in “Identity.” But even though there is a bit of a misdirect trying to make us think that Malloy is going along with Chambers’ plan Mercer needs to figure out how Chambers could have destroyed four Krill ships without any apparent weapon and Malloy goes along with Chambers’ plan to help him figure it out This involves running through the halls of the Orville I mean shuttle—to rendezvous with the Krill ship Talla flips her into a wall with her Xeleyan strength and Leyna bleeds duck sauce from her nostrils Finn identifies her immediately as an Envall from Lakar B a species whose blood becomes explosive in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere like that aboard a Krill ship The crew deduces that Chambers had launched containers of Leyna’s blood at the Krill ships using the Krill shuttle’s torpedo launcher But the Union lozenge has no torpedo launcher Chambers has taken Malloy on a suicide mission Talla confronts Chambers and Gordon in “Blood of Patriots” As the Orville speeds to intercept the lozenge of death Orrin reveals his plan and the container of Envall blood to Malloy “Looks more like egg nog.” I laughed when I first saw the design of the “quantum storage cell” that Chambers steals to safely transport the blood Lamarr explains that it uses a small antigrav field to transport quantum plasma from one place to another but it looks for all the world like it a pneumatic suction container which does the same thing at bank drive-thrus across the country Gordon refuses to go along with Chambers’ plan Gordon destroys the shuttle’s controls and Chambers sets the blood for detonation Gordon has to don a space suit to escape the lozenge via spacewalk blowing himself and the lozenge to smithereens The Orville arrives just in time to retrieve Gordon via tractor beam in a ceremony with a flourish of little speeches that neatly bookends the episode with the award ceremony at the beginning And the episode closes with a touching little scene between Ed and Gordon in which Ed reveals that he needs his friendship with Gordon because he can’t reveal his doubts and insecurities with any other member of the crew without undermining their confidence in his leadership The USS Orville tractors Gordon in “Blood of Patriots” “Blood of Patriots” is a solid episode that picks up one of the major threads from the two-part “Identity” story: the new cease-fire with the Krill who are ostensibly the Planetary Union’s main rivals in their part of the galaxy Is this enough for “Blood of Patriots” to credibly pick up the consequences from the previous episode In “Identity,” Captain Mercer was forced to seek the assistance of their longtime enemies in the face of a common foe That shows that “Identity” meant something But then we see Captain Mercer issuing orders to Isaac on the bridge of the Orville as if Isaac’s betrayal—leading to the deaths of dozens of nameless redshirted members of the Orville’s crew along with the USS Roosevelt and ultimately the crews of many Union vessels—never happened Even though The Orville still remains a show built around the standalone episodic structure the show skillfully built up to “Identity” with a series of character moments throughout the second season All indications were that it would take time for Isaac to fully regain the trust of the crew and for this issue to not even merit a mention in “Blood of Patriots” is a serious misstep “Blood of Patriots” is an affecting and effective episode when judged on its own merits It does carry on the main theme of the season in a compelling way and while it feels padded at times with too many transitional shots of the Orville in space I disliked playing the Krills’ humiliation at the hands of security for laughs but perhaps this will come back to haunt the Orville like their demeaning of Isaac did in “Identity.” Here’s hoping Talla delays the Krill in “Blood of Patriots” John Fleck as the Krill ambassador in “Blood of Patriots” Scott Grimes in “Blood of Patriots” Keep up with all the The Orville news, reviews and interviews at TrekMovie.com I’m happy the Planetary Union and the Krill agreed to a ceasefire Both of them are strong enough to fight the Kaylon I feel bad for Isaac; his race are Savage creatures It was less “Family” and more “The Wounded” where Bob Gunton plays a Starfleet Captain gone rogue killing Cardassians who are violating their treaties with the Federation and Chief O’Brien has to talk him down and bring him in before Picard is forced to destroy his ship Notable for O’Brien beaming aboard Captain Maxwell’s ship while its shields were up The problem with stunt-casting is that when you see (e.g.) Admiral Perry there’s Ted Danson.” I had the same problem with Whoopi Goldberg on TNG Not yet renewed is not the same thing as cancelled Fox typically doesn’t announce their full slate of renewals until May The Orville was renewed early in season 1 because of the production demands for a sci-fi show Without a renewal before this season ends they’ve gone ahead and secured California tax credits for the next season… so I don’t think it’s all doom and gloom yet If it is getting canceled they did it to themselves with their amazingly weak 2nd season Genre and network are enough to guarantee it I thought I read on this site a few weeks ago it was already renewed for Season 3 Cancellation means nothing anymore in these days of Hulu Many shows have found new life on these services Shows have also jumped to other networks (i.e it doesn’t necessarily mean it will be going away I also got a chuckle out of the “Run all the red lights,” line I think the review was spot-on – a solid yet pedestrian episode For those pining for more humor in this season 2 There were a number of instances (imo) where laughs could have been inserted without sacrificing the tone of the episode but alas they weren’t taken advantage of I think perhaps it would have served the continuity of the show better if Isaac were to be off-screen for a couple of episodes following “Identity,” with a line or two referring to him as perhaps ‘taking time to recalibrate in his quarters’ or something – agreed that he shouldn’t be on the bridge in a sensitive position like nothing happened I do like how The Orville continues to explore many of the moral conundrums facing society relevant yet not too heavy-handed and not at all preachy or boastful in its delivery To me the show seems to know to stay in its own lane And it’s one heck of a good-looking production with excellent musical scores Seems season 2 is filled to brim with weak episodes This show has TOTALLY lost it’s way And I really believe that is what Seth wanted it to be from day one Still waiting for what I read were a few comedic episodes Only a few left and we still haven’t seen one Regarding the reviewers comment about following up Best of Both Worlds with Family… That was a bad comparison the problem with Family was I honestly didn’t care how Picard felt after being assimilated nor did I care about his brother and that old man brother wrestling match was just embarrassing to watch Even the brilliant charisma of Patrick Steward couldn’t save that turd of an episode And I don’t even expect Orville to do any kind of follow ups to anything But this show didn’t set itself up to be serious drama It set itself up to be an uneven mix of comedy and drama A mix that even in the beginning it was obvious would have been better off leaning a little more to the comedy It is just unfortunate they have abandoned the comedy altogether next season may be my last watching the show You didn’t care about exploring how our heroes were affected after the events in “The Best of Both Worlds” Do you only watch science-fiction shows for the pew pew pew pew especially Jean-Luc’s interaction with his brother Robert Family could only work if Picard was someone the audience cared about Since I never really cared much about Picard that means I couldn’t care less about his irritating brother or home life it seems we understand your views on TNG characters ML31 but please do not generalize that to the entire audience it seems to be fairly well established that there was and is a large Trek audience that cares very much about Picard as a character…which is why TPTB and Patrick Stewart are about to produce a new vehicle for him All I did was explain how wrong Olof’s interpretation of my comment was The only difference is you presented your opinion as a generalization by speaking for the bulk of fandom your conclusion is only one possible conclusion There are plenty other logical possibilities In order to care about how the characters were affected from BoFW one needs to care about the characters themselves to begin with The “pre prew” can be fun but it means little if there is no meaty story behind it TNG had some pretty meaty stories but none of the better ones were character dependent the worst episodes of the entire show nearly all were ones meant to flesh out the existing characters Characters that are dull and lifeless to begin with Why would I care about Picard and his annoying brother ML31 is obviously a crossover from the Terran Empire because it seems clear he watched a completely different version of Star Trek: The Next Generation from the rest of us I do agree with ML that TNG is primarily a theme-driven show and many of the show’s best episodes rely on thought-provoking concepts relating to science metaphysics and the human condition in an objective sense rather than character development in an emotional sense is a show more for the head than for the heart TNG does make a foray into character-driven shows early on with episodes like “The Measure of a Man,” which brilliantly combines the intellectual appeal of an inquiry into consciousness with the emotional appeal of its effect on Data as a conscious being And TNG does have some character-driven episodes like “Family,” that work very well if you don’t care about the characters then you’re not going to care about their development The main difference between the character development in TNG and DS9 is that the development of some characters — Picard Geordi — is limited to single episodes after which the character is reset and we don’t see the character grow or change much over the course of the series Data and Wesley are the notable exceptions If you only care about the action in action-adventure stories and view characters as interchangeable props that service the plot then I suppose one would not care a fig about a character’s backstory A show with terrible and boring characters you don’t care about can still be watchable for the situations those dull people are in A show with fascinating characters can work even if their situation is not the most intriguing Obviously the preference is for fascinating characters and engaging situations together The problem TNG had that the other spin offs didn’t was that it was created by Gene Roddenberry himself He wanted humans to be “evolved” and in his mind Unfortunately in the world of story telling his idea of perfection equaled dull Who had more compelling characters in their casts I thought the “magic explosive blood” was a real TNG-style bit of ridiculous sci-fi (as in He was responsible for how many Union ships being destroyed and crew members killed? And the crew of the Enterprise went back to normal when Picard came back even though he had helped the Borg (not by choice) destroy the fleet at Wolf 359 Isaac was deactivated remotely by his Kaylon creators given no opportunity to exercise choice in the matter and he was executed in a most undignified matter Later the Kaylons reveal they are irrational in that they could not brook their creators being able to deactivate them They found it so distasteful they committed mass genocide of their creators to prevent its eventuality ever arising Isaac’s Kaylon creators install in Isaac must find equally distasteful to the point one would expect that he would eventually turn on his creators which he does – not to mention for all the hot air they blow about treating Isaac with dignity on top of the remote death they give him a most undignified one one way the flawed hero redeems himself is he sacrifices his life with no expectation of resurrection He makes the supreme sacrifice for his friends I don’t know what further act you would have him do to redeem himself Just because the gods smiled on him and resurrect him does not lessen the fact Isaac made the supreme sacrifice How many times does he have to die for his sins to satisfy you His fellow crewmen thought his selfless act made him worthy of it Now if you want to harp on something about his being back on the bridge both androids are revealed to have remote features that can be activated and will severely impede their abilities to perform their duties optimally And both are put right back at their stations with no discussions on how best to deal with these features in the course of performing their duties What if the Kaylons find out Isaac has been reactivated and remotely kill him again in the middle of his performing some vital Union function What if Data receives some signal that his homing circuits misinterpret as a recall in the middle of battling the Borg I have one question regarding this episode that I thought felt unresolved What the heck happened with the chick that pretended to be Orrin’s daughter They put the force field around the room but then never mentioned her location again Did her blood actually cause part of the ship to explode and the Orville now has a huge hole in its side kept at bay only by the field they placed over the room or… Perhaps they thought having her explode would be overkill or they want to bring the character back somehow so they didn’t want a definitive ending for her Talla told the computer to extract all nitrogen from the room but how they managed after that is not explained The ep was a good story as a standalone airing at a later date This episode should have been more dramatic More like MASH (which it wants to be like) While the various things Talla subjects the Krill to are indeed undignified the scene keeps to the comedic (even sophmoric at times) roots that MacFarlane is famous for as well as what makes the Orville different from OG ST:TNG If this type of humor is stripped away from the series in the interest of “maturity” then we’ll be left with a carbon copy of ST I don’t believe any ET watching THE PLANET OF THE APES with a human would need to know anything about the STATUE OF LIBERTY to recognize it as clearly a giant statue of a human from a civilization prior to the contemporary ape civilization that the movie depicts This one just didn’t do it for me at all. I was on the verge of dozing off a couple different times Maybe Gordon just can’t carry a storyline Is there a reference I’m not understanding here :) I think the Orville shuttle design looks like a particularly uninspired minivan The vast majority of the slapstick/potty humor is gone which would suck if it wasn’t replaced with good stories Season 2 stories are every bit as good as ST:TOS The Orville really seems to have found its footing in its second season Wow… We couldn’t disagree more Season 2 is so much WORSE than season 1 BECAUSE the humor is gone Season 1 worked solely because of the humor The weak episodes were the ones that took themselves more seriously They went from something new and daring to ‘been there Expecting a deep dive into Isaac’s character is something that would never have occurred to me after “Identity,” a two-parter whose storytelling was ultimately so disappointing as to substantially lower my expectations for this show I found “The Blood of Patriots” an entertaining episode with decent storytelling up until it takes a turn for the stu-pid at the end which is becoming a recurring feature of The Orville referred to stories that rely on characters being excessively dim-witted (relative to the diegetic logic of the story) as having a “stu-pid plot” or alternately an “idi0t plot.” “The Blood of Patriots” qualifies for Ebert’s criticism toward the end when Gordon keeps chatting with Oren after the latter has revealed his nefarious plans and the fact that he’s been lying to everyone about his own actions all along has already fired his stun weapon at Talla thereby establishing that he has no compunctions about stunning someone he cares about As Gordon holds Oren at gunpoint while the two are aboard a shuttle speeding toward their mutual oblivion the former should immediately stun the latter upon hearing the latter’s confession Gordon chats with Oren for 20 seconds or so while fumbling with the shuttle’s controls allowing the criminal to jump Gordon and nearly get them both killed Why does Gordon keep chatting with Oren instead of stunning him So that the ending can be more action-packed and work out in such a way that Oren dies and Gordon is altogether rid of him and the conflict that he represents cliche ending that ruins the episode and had me yelling at the screen: stun him Another logic problem in this episode is that Oren’s excuse that he didn’t know about the cease-fire with the Krill because he was in one of their prisons If Oren didn’t know about the cease-fire then his act of destroying Krill ships could be justifiable That course of action might not get the social-progressive seal of approval but killing an enemy whose been torturing you is certainly understandable already likely suffering from severe psychological and psychosomatic disorders we later learn that Oren wouldn’t have copped a plea But when the story turns on whether or not Oren did what the Krill accuse him of — and if he did it then he must be remanded to them for more torture and eventual execution — it’s a false choice and a hole in the plot should have looked into the issue of whether Oren should have or could have been aware of a cease-fire that was announced while he was being tortured in a Krill prison It’s like they’re not even thinking anything through most of the time Wouldn’t these issues arise when the story is getting broken this sort of incompetence in storytelling befuddles me It’s obviously not limited to The Orville I just don’t get how a studio can spend tens and hundreds of $millions to produce an episode or movie from a script that no one seems to have proof-read An essay graded by an average college professor gets more thought and attention than these scripts seem to and the professor obviously gets paid a tiny fraction of what the producer and director get That studios are hiring people based on relationships rather than talent yes-man mentality has been inculcated such that no one wants to risk their job by pointing out that the story doesn’t make sense I’m just a simple caveman sitting at home and these errors stick out to me like a sore thumb I honestly don’t get how these big-time Hollywood people are so oblivious I guess so long as a product is profitable there’s typically little incentive to make it better and the producers will blame it on things other than themselves part of it as you say is the ‘don’t argue with success’ aspect because otherwise rewriting wouldn’t be the runaway growth industry it has become in the last 40 years A lot of the issues we seize on are not story problems that require jettisoning the whole concept — though at least a few probably deserve that fate anyway — and yet those course corrections aren’t made The whole point of doing a group story break is to get professional immediate feedback as well as creative input and unless you’ve got a single lunkhead showrunner who only has the writing staff around to act as props that nod up and down (and I don’t buy into that for the most part either) I just don’t see the why of the way these issues get missed I can see a room full of pros missing something My basis for that is a real howler that had the potential to derail the pearly jewel of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE my favorite (and easily the best) Bond film They were screening the finished film when one of the makers’ kids pointed out that a guy appearing in one scene had been found killed in an earlier scene at St And somehow an entire production had managed to miss this fact yet the story has come from various sources (including I believe the film’s director) so pro folks can and do miss stuff singly and in a group That sort of incompetence in storytelling would not be an issue had they dropped in a lot of jokes along the way Then the point could still be made but the lighter tone removes the flaws in plotting Depends on one’s idea of what’s good humour I don’t think the 1990s sophomoric potty humour audience has a sufficiently large overlap with a Trek-type geek audience to make a viable market for a network show TOS had a tongue-in-cheek campy edge that overcame plot silliness at times when Discovery (season 2) goes for the trippy mycelium or a bit of camp with S31 it seems a lot of TOS fans are calling them out for not being serious enough… funny is funny be it intellectual wit or fart jokes If it makes me laugh I’m happy with it Obviously TPTB don’t consider the Trek fanbase to be enough to put a show on network television or CBS would have done just that Fox determined that such a show needed a twist that could reach out to more than just the Trek world So when Seth sold them (and I’m assuming that is how he sold the show as it was marketed as such) a humor laden TNG show There were others that had slightly more humorous elements than others but none were as straight forward comedic at the Tribbles It’s not just TOS fans who are calling out STD for their silly handling of section 31 and Space Hitler Many across the board do not seem to like what they are seeing Not sure where some get this idea that TOS fans all like and dislike the same Trek elements That does not appear to be the case at all I could go on and on with paragraphs for why the “campy” section 31 does not fit with the rest of the show People who laughed themselves silly at TVH were groaning through TFF Now TVH does have that ‘yes/no/yes/no/yes and so do you classic bit but a lot of the laughs there aren’t that good which has a couple gems ‘I liked him better before he died’ and the ‘you can talk shakahree till you’re green in the face’ with a perfect beat by Shatner following is mostly remembered for deck signs and Scotty hitting his head and the fan dance Actually after laughing at NOTHING in TVH I found that the humorous elements in TFF worked quite well Scotty talking to the computer induced facepalms Were we having a good time?” stuff from the campfire was enjoyable And Scotty hitting his head on the beam still makes me laugh to this day That felt like it was a left over element from TVH But was still better than its predecessor PS… Shifting gears I just wanted to say that I do agree with you that From Russia with Love was the best of the Connery Bonds I’m not watching The Orville but this review and last week’s make me actually curious It sounds like this show not only has much more to say about contemporary issues than Discovery but most importantly does so in a much more mature and useful fashion challenging preconceptions and giving a complex characterization of antagonists rather than the laughable cartboard cartoons of Discovery This sounds more like Star Trek VI than Ming the Merciless I really dislike juvenile jokes like the ones this show got known for but the juvenile writing of Discovery overall makes me seriously reconsider it is much more in tune with contemporary issues At least that’s what I’m getting out of the show Which is why I really appreciate that Trekmovie has adopted it enough to review it and create a space for our discussion of it and it’s a different unevenness than the early seasons of TNG for example But every so often the Orville impresses me by looking at things in a way just slightly skewed from what Trek would have done I pretty much agree with all of the points that you made in this review really disappointed that there seems to have been no consequences for Isaac (other than his effective exile from his home planet) Even moreso than the fact that he is back at his station on the bridge like nothing ever happened I could not believe that he was at the ceremony for Yaphit A ceremony where our favorite space blob was awarded a medal for his heroism battling the Kaylon Isaac should have spent the rest of the season confined to quarters or at least not back at his usual post Everyone on the ship should be avoiding him like the plague Talla told Klyden to walk the other way if they were ever in the same corridor and he’s merely an ignorant bigot; Isaac is indirectly culpable for the deaths of most of Talla’s security team not to mention poor Ensign Airlock and the crews on all of those destroyed Union starships front and center at the medal ceremony and surrounded by the crewmates he didn’t help murder I am just going to pretend that this episode never happened and cross my fingers that we see some serious Isaac shunning in the remaining episodes this season (either that or some serious heroics that rehabilitate Isaac in the eyes of his crewmates) I think it will seriously impede the audience from taking the show seriously That would be hugely disappointing – with the shift in tone for season two Seth MacFarlane obviously wants the show to be viewed in the same light as TNG But unless there is a huge course correction the plotting of Isaac’s character will have been seriously mishandled … …unless there is a huge course correction I’m trying to think of something that sounds less glib than “too late,” but nothing’s coming to mind It seems the producers have already decided to treat Isaac basically as a human character with some relatively minor idiosyncrasies He’s warm and fuzzy and has feelings Not being taken seriously could work in the show’s favor if it decides to go back to being a comedy “Not being taken seriously could work in the show’s favor… ” Not being taken seriously already DID work in the show’s favor But I think it obvious by now that Seth sold the show as a comedy to get it on the air and ultimately shifted it to become his personal TNG fan film A human wouldn’t be welcomed back with open arms so quickly Imagine if Himmler suddenly had a change of heart near the end of World War II and took actions that saved millions of lives but I’d also look at him askance for the rest of his life every time I recalled all the awful things he did before his change of heart I hate to admit it but I’ve swung around to ML31’s viewpoint on this subject It’s bonkers that Isaac is not only allowed to remain on the Orville is not only manning his usual station on the bridge but is also socially reintegrated with the crew I’m going to just have to try to let this go and move past it or I’ll never be able to look at The Orville the same way again I enjoy the pew pew pew as much as the next guy but without believable characterizations and consequences for actions taken the notion of “plot” becomes meaningless I made the same point about the show pressing reset on Isaac in Identity And it didn’t make sense in “A Happy Refrain,” either the show’s priority with that character is apparently to go for a (wait for it) happy refrain that panders to the audience rather than using him for meaningful drama the happy refrain route could work if the show were mainly a comedy You still need some sort of logic to a comedy in order to keep the audience in that world the plot holes and internal logic problems just don’t play well and it has nothing to fall back on the show is setting the audience up in one episode to expect meaningful character development and then breaking that promise in the next And all of the action and CGI in the world won’t hold my attention when it’s in service of a lame I appreciate that MacFarlane loves TNG — so do I he doesn’t seem to have the knack for that kind of show He should either stick to comedy or hand the writing over to someone better equipped to make The Orville the kind of sci-fi drama that he wants it to be Your example would have more impact on me if I didn’t know the US employed war crimes guilty Nazis after WW II to save us from the godless Commies And the US didn’t deport the survivng employed Nazis until 2014 but continued their Social Security payments I immediately wondered if an actor’s contract requires screen time to get paid I agree with all here that the character Isaac has no place on active bridge duty Perhaps they could not shoe-horn him into the episode any other way I see no problems with him being on the bridge or being an active member of the crew And yet you are on record stating that Data was an existential threat to the Enterprise on TNG Data didn’t have built-in head cannons or participate in a biological genocide against the Federation Isaac’s is far more easily accessed by Yaphet than any TNG crewman can get at Data’s but a model indistinguishable from him did and Data joined that model in war crimes against the Federation it didn’t take much to get Data to turn some of them were predetermined in his programming Soong only knows what else might be predetermined for him If people are totally fine with Data then it stands to reason they should be totally fine with ISSAC The only difference for me is that I find Issac to be an interesting character I’d rather not see him admonished of removed from the bridge Data turned to the dark side in “Descent,” because Lor zapped him with some kind of mind-ray that affected his programming includes a directive that he cannot harm human life nor by omission of action allow humans to be harmed served aboard the Orville for a year and a half essentially as a covert agent for a hostile race of beings considering whether to exterminate humanity went along with the Kaylon after they’d decided to exterminate humanity only to switch sides and betray his people when his robotic heart-strings were tugged by the sad face of a little boy there’s a significant difference between Data and Isaac in terms of how their respective characters are defined by each show and in their respective motivations The difference is Data can be programmed (or even zapped) to do anything And has been pre-programed as well for who knows what at worst Data is just as fallible as Isaac The difference is Data can be programmed (or even zapped) to do anything Geordi was similarly “zapped” by Romulans in “The Mind’s Eye” and “programmed” to try to assassinate Picard The point is not that a crew member who has been mind-controlled to do bad things is no longer trustworthy after s/he recovers from the mind control The point is that Isaac was essentially indifferent about exterminating humanity from the start and he doesn’t (or shouldn’t) have feelings or programming to fundamentally preclude him from harming humans capricious fondness for certain humans (like Ty) but not for others (like the Orville security personnel whom the Kaylon murdered) That’s the difference between Isaac and Data And [Data] has been pre-programed as well for who knows what We know what because we were told at the beginning of the series that Data’s programming precludes him from harming humans or allowing them to be harmed Data is programmed to be a good-guy whereas Isaac has no such ethical commitment Was Geordi “programmed” to act in a dangerous way Is Data capable of ignoring such programming if it goes counter to everything he has learned “We know what because we were told ” Is that the person you can trust for that sort of thing Has anyone ever cracked him open to confirm all this no one has tried to reverse engineer Data nor has anyone tried to see if there are any nefarious codes floating around in there “Data is programmed to be a good-guy” The ability to grow beyond his programming Issac is far more human than Data ever was Picard wouldn’t let them and argued the legal case to fully emancipate Data which stopped them what he learned from that allowed him to perform the memory download to B-4 who we and they have every reason to believe lacks Data’s 3 laws just as Lore did Data even was certain B-4’s more primitive positronics couldn’t possibly make use of all of it but wanted to give him every chance – every chance to update the Remans as it turned out But this goes to your point as far as we were told Data’s never shared his research with Starfleet’s cybernetic division even when he let them help with Lall’s deterioration And Picard has no compunction about letting B-4 fill Data’s vacant spot And even if Cygnus wants to make a semantic argument about Data he can’t deny he was replaced by B-4 who tracks Isaac even closer than Data did Why did no one decide to do it when this android showed up and said “I want to be a Star Fleet officer.” but there is enough evidence to NOT allow Data to man a station on a Star Ship We accept it as viewers and don’t question it because we aren’t supposed to Data is “clearly” one of the good guys Part 1,” we see a Borg in the Enterprise brig activate some device on his forearm that sends some sort of signal to Data causing his emotions to spiral out of control The control over Geordi that caused him to act badly is comparable to the control over Data that caused him to act badly: both characters were controlled from without Isaac’s bad behavior was consequent to his normal programming It’s a significant difference in the characters’ ethics and how trustworthy they are I’m not doing the nonsensical tit-for-tat on this Lore didn’t use a mind ray but offered Data his emotion chip and then used his greater experience with emotions to corrupt Data It was never clearly stated but I always imagined Lore had monkeyed with the chip because he seemed to be able to limit the emotions Data experienced when he tempted him – I mean they all didn’t seem to flood into Data all at once but rather one emotion at a time and Lore seemed ever ready to exploit them as they came The only ray I recall was something Picard and crew concocted to reset Data’s Positronic brain so that his ethical subroutines could overide his emotions which were ruling him: familial love I’m now going to check the online dialogue transcripts to see what we remembered correctly: Lore said he kept Data’s emotion chip installed in Lore’s positronic brain and then used what he learned from it to download emotions into Data Data found his emotions powerfully addictive and in addition to Lore’s experience with emotions he used that addictive quality to manipulate Data to the point of overriding Data’s ethical subroutines Geordi’s visor could see a carrier wave that Lore was using for Data’s downloads He believed Lore shutdown Data’ ethical program and they could reboot it with “phased kedion pulse at the right frequency” which Picard did The Borg in the brig activates a device on his forearm to control Data’s emotions And prior to that (from the Wikipedia summary): Geordi’s VISOR allows him to see a carrier wave being beamed from Lore to Data and they hypothesize that this is the source of Data’s emotions and Lore’s control over Data. Data never tried the emotion chip until GENERATIONS Data is being controlled from without by Lore Data expresses regret to Geordi for hurting and almost killing him that wasn’t you.” That’s the difference between Data and Isaac The AI who acted as a covert agent for the Kaylon for a year and a half and went along with their plan to exterminate humanity which resulted in a number of Orville crew members being killed — that was normal Isaac He wasn’t being controlled by some external agent It calls Isaac’s allegiance and loyalties into question in a way that doesn’t apply to Data normally If Isaac “…wasn’t being controlled by some external agent.” then how did the Kaylon deactivate him If Isaac “…wasn’t being controlled by some external agent.” then how did the Kaylon deactivate him This has no bearing on Isaac’s ethics and loyalties The Isaac who was disloyal to the PU and the Orville was the normal Isaac That he was shut off remotely has no bearing on that point Re: shut off remotely has no bearing on that point it was an action they could not tolerate from their own biological creators – the whole reason for their genocidal program against all sentient biologicals Why do you believe Isaacs’ creators taking such an action against him nay building him with such a capability was anything but a method to coerce him If Isaac was totally aligned with the program (pun intended) why wouldn’t he drink the kool-aid when ordered to do so Why did the Kaylons feel the need to be able to do to Isaac what had been done to them Isaac is a Kaylon in all things but hating his creators for deactivating him without consulting him And all that bull about Isaac needing to be treated with dignity What kind of dignified deactivation was that Re: Data never tried the emotion chip until GENERATIONS I thought when I said Lore was keeping the chip in Lore’s head that I made it clear that I was wrong about that And the Borg told Data that Lore was downloading emotions into the Borg as well I believe we were meant to believe these were Data’s too but it was never explicitly stated And Isaac was deactivated from without proving he likewise could be controlled This is why I see this as a nuanced semantical argument and I wasn’t accusing you of anything other than being blind to the clear parallels then B-4’s enlistment in Starfleet – there’s absolutely zero reason to believe B-4 operates on any sort of ethical level as high as Data’s when Picard puts him on the bridge who we presume gave Data the 3(?) laws you believe he obeys Data violates those laws – not to mention Starfleet ones this established that the Federation and Data both knew he was subject to external influence and apparently neither bothered with even a board of inquiry as to how to take precautions to harden him and/or Starfleet against it which allowed a bad actor his continuing to serve in Starfleet no questions asked after endangering the boy in sickbay with this recall flaw is just peachy keen and nothing like Isaac’s reinstatement Picard was also controlled from without by Ferengi in Season 1’s “The Battle.” Under abnormal circumstances and therefore nobody is trustworthy and nobody should be serving aboard the Enterprise (or the Orville) Data’s ethical programming precludes him harming humans or allowing them to be harmed under normal circumstances Isaac obviously has no such programming and therefore differs significantly from Data in his ethics and sense of loyalty it makes more sense for Data to have resumed his service aboard the Enterprise after his bad actions in the “Descent” two-parter than for Isaac to have resumed his service aboard the Orville after his bad actions which are revealed in the “Identity” two-parter to have actually occurred covertly all throughout Season 1 and through half of Season 2 and which Isaac discontinued for no specified reasons and which the PU and the crew of the Orville have no particular reason to believe that Isaac will not revert to in the future Picard has the choice to drink the poison when the state decrees it Isaac had that choice removed from him in his creation Isaac was being treated and constructed in the propertied ways of a slave you are putting faith in Data’s “do not harm humans” ethics placed their by his creator which were demonstrated not to be as rock solid as you keep claiming In BROTHERS when that same creator activated a remote recall installed as Isaac’s remote function was in him which endangered the life of the human boy in sickbay Data was operating as his creator intended so you can’t keep claiming he wasn’t operating “NORMALLY” in ignoring laws you claim he can’t violate should have been submitted to a hearing on how their service would deal with the problems introduced by their revealed “remote” features But that’s not how either show chose to deal with it and so both just let them walk right onto their posts even though either’s remote being activated again in the middle of serving in a crisis “… would prove to be disastrous.” should be “… could prove to be disastrous I find it rather alarming that you do not seem to notice the arc that in the beginning of this tale Isaac was deactivated not by his choice and in the end he saves the day by making the choice he was denied to sacrifice himself to save his friends He had absolutely no hope that the Union would find a way to reactivate him or even choose to do so when he pulled his plug but you keep writing that selfless act off as if it wouldn’t be a mitigating factor in his reinstatement How many times does one have to die for their sins before redemption is achieved in your philosophy My point is not a value judgment of Data as being a better person than Isaac My point simply concerns loyalty and trustworthiness It doesn’t matter if (and this is also an assumption on your part) Isaac acted badly because he feared (with his non-existent emotions) for his own life What matters is that Isaac’s loyalty lay with the Kaylon for a year and a half the PU and the Orville have no particular reason to trust Isaac there is nothing about Isaac’s normal make-up that precludes him harming humans or his loyalty reverting back to the Kaylon at some point Part 2,” isn’t as trustworthy as Data at the end of “Descent Geordi’s line says it all: “Data Might Isaac prove himself trustworthy to the PU at some point in the future his trustworthiness is relatively low at the end of “Identity Part 2.” Lower than Data’s at the end of “Descent Part 2,” which is the point I was making there is nothing inherent in DATA’s revealed remote recall that would prevent him from acting His actions in DESCENT only compound that threat as it reveals him to still be remotely accessible via his uninstalled emotion chip for more unethical behavior than that took any steps to ensure Data was hardened from his built-in remote access flaw so that his ethics could be trusted in his continued service at the end of BROTHERS Soong died so quickly that he couldn’t possibly have dismantled his recall device which is why it was a mystery as to why Starfleet didn’t at least try to activate the recall to halt the two androids antics in DESCENT They had absolutely zero expectations that he would start behaving in an ethical manner or that Data’s ethical routines could even run on an older version of the positronic brain – not to mention the Reman mods to it proof that your contention that they thoroughly tested Data’s ethical programming prior to enlisting him in Starfleet is just an assumption on your part Isaac’s emotions or lack thereof have no impact on the observed fact that Kaylons find their deactivation by others extremely distasteful to the point of planning to commit mass genocide of any biological sentients that may be capable of achieving it and/or using it to enslave them You may not be aware of it but you keep arguing in your other points that Isaac IS a Kaylon If he’s a Kaylon then deactivation can be used to enslave him – Kaylon Primary said as much about his biological creators Loved the part where the door of the crashed shuttle is stuck and Talla is told to open it… and then she casually rips the entire door off its hinges and sets it aside like it was a sheet of cardboard (too cool) someone who is a POW for 20 years is brought on board and pretty much immediately given a new uniform and allowed to continue as though nothing happened how is someone who was a POW for 20 years supposed to know about a cease fire and that blowing up the enemy violated that Seth obviously wants The Orville to be taken seriously as a drama but nonsensical characterizations and paradigm-changing actions in one episode that have no consequences in the very next episode do not help him make his case Had the show leaned more towards the silly and the light for the bulk of the season then did the recent two parter exactly the same way I think it would have carried a TON more weight as a more serious episode I am stunned that Seth & Co don’t see this He’s probably too thrilled with pretending to be Jean-Luc to admit it Maybe there should be 2 or 3 comedic episodes for every straight drama episode That sounds like a good radio for this show but it’s not something I’m heavily ‘invested in’ It’s an hour in familiar territory where I don’t have to watch re-runs of something else I thought there were some new hull plating and other details Was this some CGI continuity resulting from spacedock repairs after the Kaylon battle in “Identity” It was hard to see anything with all of the CGI lens dust (In case you’re wondering what I’m referring to watch the Orville fly away from the camera in the final shot of the episode right when Seth MacFarlane’s executive producer credit appears Kinda took me out of the show since there didn’t seem to be any justification for lens dust in deep space “They just showing off” I thought while watching Maybe the camera crew were rooting around in a comet just before the take Yesterday the cast of Star Trek: Discovery along with executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin TrekMovie was there to bring you highlights from the event The ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ panel at PaleyFestLA 2019 (Emily Kneeter for The Paley Center for Media) The panel started out with showrunner Alex Kurtzman responding to a question about what it is about Star Trek that endures where he pointed to the show’s creator: Gene Roddenberry created a vision of the future that was defined by hope and that was marked that the idea of that the best of us will endure in the future in which diversity was an assumption It really was an amazing thing and the more I have got to know about Gene’s history the more I understand he really was a visionary beyond all the ways in which he has already been defined that belief that the bridge crew comes together as a family and ensures our survival is a message that endures because we need it to When discussing the development of Discovery Heather Kadin pointed out how the show has a different approach for the lead character Michael Burnham: What was important and unique about this character was to have a character that wasn’t yet captain All of Star Trek for years you have been following an established captain and the journeys they are taken but you haven’t really got to experience the journey itself of getting there And that is such a relatable quest for people Sonequa Martin-Green spoke about what it meant to her to be cast as the lead in the series: I always want to be able to communicate what it means [to be cast as lead in Star Trek: Discovery] Because of the franchise and how long-standing it is Because of these kind of people I get to work with Because of the complications in the story and character Being a black woman in the midst of all this diversity we are championing One of the biggest additions to the second season was the introduction of the character Spock but Alex Kurtzman revealed that why Ethan Peck was chosen: I could tell he was thinking and feeling so deeply about what to do with this character in a way that honored everything both with what Leonard [Nimoy] brought to it what Zach [Quinto] brought to it I could tell he was just going to immerse himself in the part and live it constantly and fully He was asking very deep and thoughtful questions about it…He had been doing lots of work just on the tactical of the material without necessarily bringing all the attachments to Spock to it And that is what I was looking for the most And how is this not just going to be a performance you have seen two other really excellent actors do I could tell he wanted to bring a volatility to it which I thought was totally fresh and interesting which is a version of Spock you haven’t fully seen yet And in all our conversations he kept saying: “I’m terrified.” And we would say “it’s okay After the moderator joked about all the beards on the show Alex Kurtzman took it as an opportunity to talk about why Spock has a beard on Discovery: Spock’s beard was a real choice because we hadn’t really seen him like that – he had long hair in The Motion Picture – but it says a lot about the state he is in when we first meet him Ethan Peck and Tig Notaro at PaleyFestLA 2019 (Emily Kneeter for The Paley Center for Media) So far comedian Tig Notaro has only been seen in a couple of episodes The role was created for her by Alex Kurtzman who has known her for years At the event Tig leaned into her dry wit describing what it was like: I honestly thought I would just do an episode or two and then be on my way especially because I did a terrible job…My first day and actually the first two episodes I was like “oh my gosh I cannot remember these words.” At a point a director came out and actually sat on set and just fed me my lines I wrote Alex an email apologizing and said I know you said you wanted me as much as I am available but I think after you see the footage you may change your mind He told me after that e-mail he decided to make my dialog even harder…I was on my own show that took place in Mississippi which is where I thought I belonged The cast and crew – after I did my first two terrible episodes – I was: “I would love to come back and work with these people When asked about Hugh Culber’s post-resurrection breakup with his partner Paul Stamets I see it as this man who has come back from the dead is trying to figure out how to live I just think he is trying to save [Paul Stamets] a little trauma by saying: “You know what I need a minute to figure out what this thing does.” [points to his body] Because it’s pristine Stamets actor Anthony Rapp picked up on this topic as well We are still in the midst of this and things continue to evolve We are grateful that we were given something authentic and complicated and rich If you were to come back are you just going to wash your hands of that and be done Things would happen and characters weren’t changed by them The topic wrapped up with Cruz noting that Culber is taking a Marie Kondo approach to his new life: I love the fact that we – the writers and Alex – took an opportunity to say who is this person Let’s figure it out and flesh him out I love that Hugh is kind of looking at his life and seeing what sparks joy What worked before and what could have been better Maybe there is some stuff that doesn’t work anymore because this is a new life and a new opportunity Doug Jones talked about the big change for Saru in the second season The character of Saru was developed with the understanding that he is based on fear He has a predator species on his home planet that keeps them in line and brings us to our demise when it is our time the threat ganglia fall out and I have a new sense of self and no fear that has been a ride to go on because I live my life in fear I understood Saru before and now I am inspired by Saru Alex Kurtzman picked up on the discussion to explain why the writers took Saru in a new direction in season two: Doug’s range is extraordinary that we felt like we have told the story of what it means to live in fear It was just a tremendously different dramatic opportunity And then the question becomes: how much fear is a good thing What happens when you jettison it entirely I think what touched us most as writers was the story about somebody who felt this planet was where they were the lemmings walking off the cliff and there was one person who said: “I don’t think I want that.” And he wasn’t allowed to think that way which was to say I am going to give up my family and follow my heart believing there is something better for me That is the kind of story that demands consequences and he comes back to the world sees what is happening is a very complicated fractional relationship with his sister But ultimately it is his courage that ends up freeing the Kelpiens from their bonds too had he not been the one to have the courage in the beginning What is exciting for us is that it is not a closed chapter Season two also brought hair back to the Klingons L’Rell actress Mary Chieffo explained how she saw this as important for her character’s arc: She literally and metaphorically let her hair down this season I do think it has been really fun to play both with the hair and the Chancellor aesthetic…This combination of femininity and power which I believe exists very strongly and something that we need to see more of With the hair and the beautiful head pieces and the design as in that final speech I had [in “Point of Light”] the woman with that crazy metal thing on my head and the long And I think the hair really does help with that Mary Chieffo and Shazad Latif at PaleyFestLA 2019 (Emily Kneeter for The Paley Center for Media) In case you missed it, we also covered Alex Kurtzman’s comments about the upcoming Picard show from PaleyFest TrekMovie has more coverage from PaleyFest Keep up with all the Star Trek: Discovery news at TrekMovie but you all know what I’m talking about It was glorious and intimidating and intoxicating I don’t believe that we should objectify one another and yet here I am When Gersha Phillips and the producers saw Spock in his environmental suit they had to have thought about the sexual excitement it would engender And from the point of view of a man who is gay objectify away with Spoack’s rather pert spacesuit covered bum that the men on TOS were also objectified to an extent (Kirk’s torn shirt and so forth) I’m just glad that Peck turned out to be such a good fit for the role I’m a guy who generally tends to go for the ladies you forget about Kirk been shirtless most of the time they’ve never filmed Riker or Kirk in the way that they shot female characters like Seven of Nine I think we all remember those Seven of Nine Jeffries Tubes scenes this might be the first time that Star Trek has ever done an ‘upskirting scene’ with a male character the high reflectiveness thanks to the lighting and the sheer amount of focus that Peck’s butt gets… that’s not the norm Personally I don’t have a problem with stuff like this in Trek I am still thankful to the lighting designer for “Choose Your Pain.” Captain Lorca is very Believe me Athus … there was NOTHING pleasing about a shirtless Kirk or a topless Riker Trip in ENT was rather visually pleasing… Now that I think about it he and Archer had their shirt off a LOT on that show lol In fact I think all the guys on Enterprise were a lot more ripped than you found on the other shows Oh never forget Trip and the decontamination chamber The Enterprise crew actually seemed like a crew who could actually pass a Starfleet fitness exam (I’m sure such thing exists in-universe) The TOS crew too I suppose were 60s fit and then the Disco crew is fit as well It makes me think of actual astronauts and military members who are fit and look the part Kirk shirtless was never fun to look at to be honest And Riker looked too much like someone’s dad to be considered hot But you can go back in EVERY previous Trek show and can tell when they were playing up a shot of a female character that was supposed to be “sexy.” I think he meant SJW – social justice warrior Being a guy I admit I never thought to notice it the first time I watched the last episode But then I went on another site and thats all people were talking about lol So on my second rewatch I definitely noticed and wow I was thinking it but haven’t made a comment anywhere about this I was like “oh this is buff Spock?” I’m here for it… although not with today’s clear-cut “6-pack abs” I recall watching “Patterns of Force” with great interest… I did notice Spock’s butt in that spacesuit Although being a straight man I thought more about the suit being too tight than Spock’s butt being But yes I do agree that there’s nothing wrong with objectifying males considering what Star Trek has done with women (7 of 9 but even more so T’Pol) The shower scene with T’Pol and that engineer who’s name I forget was just too obviously a manipulation to get a certain demographic to watch Just give us a good script and we’ll watch… T’Pol and 7 of 9 were just eye candy I would expect the actresses would find that very insulting Both Blalock and Ryan were very good at acting their roles; it is a shame they were SO objectified as it appears she was corseted most of the time she is equally attractive yet not so overexposed I think Kira’s uniform got more skintight through the seasons though I have some of my son’s Navy uniforms in my garage no one anywhere is going to look at the coveralls and conclude they need to be much more catsuit snug We see this when a sci-fi production calls for armor – cleavage is lovingly crafted into the armor of the female characters even those the people who actually still design this stuff all agree it’s not only not necessary but for a practical design building in breasts actually weakens armor I’m awfully tired of two things that were brought up here Can we just please leave the praising of GR to “thank you for creating this wonderful world” and leave it at that So tired of hearing about Gene’s vision And 2nd… The we can use a lot less of the cliche “now more than ever.” This is used frequently and it’s now used so much and so often that it really has no meaning anymore Its so dumb they keep saying that in every Star Trek interview you mean he really didn’t give it much thought until AFTER the first series But there is no denying that after Gene came up with GENESIS II and THE QUESTOR TAPES which were shot down he usurped STAR TREK to promote those denied “visions” Re:… now used so much and so often that it really has no meaning… That’s equivalent to claiming the word “the” is now used so much and so often that it has no meaning What cliches lack is current hip lingo destined for clichehood’s currently enjoyed sex appeal which can be used to gain attention for some dry concept that would otherwise get ignored The word “the” is a part of speech and for the most part is not only used appropriately but is also not over done Unlike certainly cliches… “We need X now more than ever.” That is said all the time and it is simply not the case You simply do not understand what constitutes meaning in the dynamic language that is English if you believe the singular article “the” has more meaning than the phrase “We need someone like Kirk more than ever.” simply because it is a cliche I understand that you close your mind when you detect it but that is something quite apart from claiming the phrase has no meaning or even less neaning than a sentence fragment consisting soley of “The” When someone points out a flaw you play the “closed mind” card It’s arrogant and does not reflect well on the person choosing that road You were the one making the flawed analogy The is not used so often that it loses it’s meaning It has a meaning and is not a cliche as opposed to the other comment Everything else you said is immaterial and designed just to throw the subject off track for reasons we can only guess at but only you know for sure I did not say you were “closed minded” I used “close your mind” to refer the very real meaning the words making up a cliche have You will note from the OED entry for cliche: “a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought” nowhere is a cliche itself defined as something without meaning a definition for it that you invented out of whole cloth it doesn’t invalidate my comment in any way “Cliches becomes cliches because they are valid enough to bear endless repetition.” – Seth MacFarlane I have a clearing understanding of the attempted point from your elucidation but English phrases and words losing meaning over time is not something unique to cliches or overuse And I wonder if what ML31 more precisely meant is that people currently resorting to loooooong overused cliches often haven’t a clue as to their original coinage particularly so when you understanding that Genes visions tended to be filtered through a sexist lens… I’m grateful for Gene creating it like everyone but this so called Gene’s vision is a myth Tos was progressive for its time but for today standards Just the idea of bringing intelligent SF to television was revolutionary for the time if not for his flawless ideas (they certainly weren’t) or sterling character Very few saints have created great TV shows Isn’t that something like saying the founding fathers’ shouldn’t have lionized Socrates even though Plato says he reasoned out the equality of the sexes in an ideal republic Socrates laid claim to being a product of the racist slave economy based Greek state and died in obedient allegiance to it we should tire of it if it means nothing or if it is used as an excuse for mediocrity Ask yourself this: If in a moment of existential crisis you need the assistance of someone to help you would you choose a person who believed in a future of harmony and love toward all or just some random person you would meet on a New York City street at a random time of day Both could be of assistance but I have ideas as to whom I would prefer I take the ideals of Trek seriously not because Gene said it It is part of a philosophy of caring and compassion Since when is that philosophy so plentiful that we need to criticize its expression “In the 24th century there will be no hunger and all the children will know how to read.” Gene’s vision continues to inspire me I would get help from a good friend who I know and trust than either of those options you presented the philosophy was not the original intent That sort of evolved like a lot of things about the show Gene’s “vision” was mainly to get a show in the air I grew up in the 1950’s watching HAVE GUN I think Gene’s intent or vision was always to do an end-run for scripts he had written for it and other efforts that were shot down for inane bureaucratic corporate nonsense often dripping in sexist and racist tripe passed off as “universal” truths guaranteeing their failure One thing that I have never actually been able to finger in his life was what precise event led him to believe that he could make significant lucre pursuing that It’s like they feel they transcribed the bible from the prophet or something I love Gene Roddenberry’s original Star Trek I love that he was a humanist and envisioned an end to so much human suffering OTOH he had an adolescent guy’s fascination with certain types of women and designed and wrote some very sexist things and this disempowerment of women was only reinforced by the NBC network executives who did not want to displease the audience they were trying to attract it really sucked that they replaced the character of Number One with Nurse Chapel who only joined the service’s nursing corps to search for her fiance even though she was a qualified exobiologist — give me a break!] Roddenberry created the Trek universe; he did have a lovely vision of the future in many ways but Disco’s showrunners have only improved on that and I feel they should own that Every actor seems to say “what a great honor and responsibility” &c. and talk about “the Great Vision” &c.; yes let’s be thankful and happy and move on to what you are doing and going to do Because I am very excited about Star Trek’s future He might steal that BUTCH CASSIDY line about having vision while the rest of the world wears bifocals but update it to ‘the rest of the verse needs retinax.’ That’s just what they have to do for PR reasons remind people over and over again where Star Trek was born out of Rick Berman brought it up in practically every interview every inch of it relied on Gene’s ‘vision’ although in reality a lot of what Roddenberry wanted in TNG was jettisoned once he was gone The basic idea of a positive future stayed but the ultra Utopian view had vanished or Berman couldn’t have created DS9 in the first place To be fair I think they all mean it when they talk about his positive future where humanity has managed to overcome its biggest negatives and thrive But when it comes to the details of what that means is when its just more talk than anything Especially in Discovery case which really didn’t feel anything close to what Roddenbrry wanted in its first season but has gotten back to some of it this season at least “In the 24th century there will be no hunger and all the children will know how to read.” Gene’s hopeful vision for the future continues to inspire me as well Progress and the reconciliation of conflicts within and without: These are the voyages Trek is about the internal as well as the external Progress arises when it comes from the heart Spock is clearly the most pioneering character in all of Trek https://youtu.be/iga0dKowHkU He expererienced nothing that all of us do not experience and yet we cannot experience what he did throughout his life This is in a large measure what Trek is about I’m so glad that this practically confirms we’ll get some more of Jett Reno Not sure which thread I should have put this into but was rewatching the 2part THE MENAGERIE and seized on Spock saying Talos IV was 6 or 8 days away at maximum warp If DSC indicated Talos is only 2 ly from that starbase (which is what I read here a week or so back) I’m guessing warp speed is moving at MUCH less than the usual speed of plot this decade The Starbase was moved over the ten years to be much farther away from Talos that doesn’t wash and even a cursory examination bears that out If it was only 2 ly from Talos when the whole CAGE biz started and remained there up until post-DSC s2 then why would the Talosians have not influenced any or all of the ships passing by their sphere of influence in pre-Pike/Ent years Pike may have been a ‘prime’ specimen but Starfleet seems pretty rich in that department nearly as many as the middle-management types that typify the Harve Bennett years the Talosians pretty much say that humans are unsuitable for their purposes which means moving a base shouldn’t be a factor (and it makes the death penalty notion that much more flimsy ships would have been hearing the subspace distress call all over the quadrant which doesn’t look like it was just assembled yesterday would have been among the first locales to hear it Talos would have HAD to be a decent ways off from Fed territory The character doesn’t feel like Spock to me and I can’t reconcile with him being a backstory of Spock Prime it’s easier for me to see the show as yet another reboot and different ‘reality’ I have all respect for the actor because this is one of the hardest characters to play in terms of pressure I hope the role brings him luck because he’s a good actor and doesn’t make me look up the sky and wonder about all the different worlds out there to explore it is more diverse and is following what it preaches about when it comes to that When a show gives us a huge amount of darkness This is the sentiment I had regarding the BSG reboot Altho’ I quite admired the writers and producers I look forward to viewing the series at my own pace one realizes that we are all literally the authors of our own fate We change the channel if it bothers us or if it bores Each of us is different in our stage of life and in our outlook We can only hope to learn from that and from one another Being hopeful and optimistic in this age seems to be the boldest thing. I think Burnham is one of the most hopeful characters in Trek She holds to the ideals of the Federation; she loves and explores science; she has great compassion — they are her inspiration And she inspires others in turn [like Saru his journey wasn’t even about being the captain of a starship with his promotion to captain as something which was ultimately incidental as part of a larger story In fact Sisko was the first main character to get an arc from the beginning Kirk and Picard didn’t get anything more than just being good captains on a starship and they developed them as they went But Sisko was given a lot of interesting background in the first episode He was a Starfleet officer who recently lost his wife and raising a son on his own (and to this day the only Captain who was a family man in the entire franchise) And yes the first who didn’t start out as a Captain from the beginning He was in a post he didn’t want to be in and of course he became the emissary which is something he didn’t want either but accepted in time Thats why I say again and again why DS9 was my favorite show because it did things the other shows never really did and Sisko was the biggest example of that I loved how we watched someone who really didn’t love his job or his place in the universe to someone who had accepted it all by the end We got to see a real growth of a main character that was never tempted before or after I don’t mind the stuff they are doing with Burnham but I REALLY wish this show stop acting like everything its doing is some huge leap for Star Trek it is a modern day show and doing things faster the other shows did but Burnham is neither the first main character who had to overcome an obstacle nor is it the first show whose main character is a person of color or a woman Star Trek has had all these things literally decades ago now None of what DSC is doing here is remotely new or provocative with regard to recognizing POC or females in Trek And literally every other show/film out there these days does the same Really the only thing “new and different” that Discovery is doing is the platform it is available on and the fact that theirs are the shortest seasons in all of Trek ever by some 10-12 episodes Apart from that the only thing that was truly different was the main character was not in command of anything Commander Sisko was still the commanding officer of DS9 so it’s a distinction without a difference in the context of what Kadin’s quote was trying to convey Jetpack Jesus it was a big deal to many people of colour in 1993 that Sisko did not start off in the premiere as a Captain — but instead a reluctant war-scarred Commander who would have likely retired had not the need for senior officers been so great after Wolf 359 There was real concern that a message was being given that a black man could not be captain With DS9 being the first serial Trek series there was no expectation or confidence among fans that his character would grow and achieve promotion Karin really needs to know this kind of history of the franchise …would have been nice to see you by his side man… please tell us what you think of Discovery? Why didn’t he ask you to come aboard Mr DC FONTANA created Spock’s background as an only child and said in an interview that she didn’t like him having a half brother in STAR TREK V So I guess she wouldn’t like this either… It sounds increasingly that the events in DISC might be wished into the cornfield There are a limited number of ways by which this can be done One obvious way is that they are the machinations of the Talosians None of this happened as presented onscreen Another is that this is an emanation from the Gate of Forever Hmm I thought being a Captain meant being able to make decisions between life and death I think he really is understanding the heart of Star Trek these days The future of the Star Trek film franchise has remained uncertain since Star Trek Beyond‘s release in 2016 Now another star of the Kelvin trilogy is talking about what could be next had an incredible experience making those films If there is an appetite for more of those stories with us in them I’m sure that we would all be thrilled to come back and do one more or whatever but I’m not really attached to it anymore Quinto’s comments echo co-star Simon Pegg’s, who recently said he believed the cast would “all jump at the chance” to return to Star Trek Karl Urban and Zachary Quinto at the premiere of Star Trek Beyond While Quinto doesn’t know if he will ever play Spock again he is sanguine about his experience with the franchise and optimistic for Trek’s future I have lifelong friendships from those films and working relationships and a lot of respect and fond memories so if that’s what it ends up being and I can look back on my life and say that’s what it was they’ve been around for decades and generations The main cast on the set of Star Trek (2009) with director J.J Keep up with all news regarding upcoming Star Trek films at TrekMovie.com I still cant quite get my head around walking film legend Quentin Tarantino offering his services to do Trek 4 and Paramount being abit..’uh…hmm. Tarantino never committed to actually doing it and then ended up opting not to Hawley’s shows Legion and Fargo are both big-time critically praised Doesn’t matter; that movie is never happening Well there’s a school of thought that says maybe Star Trek fares better as a medium budget movie so maybe the TV guy is a better option I can’t deny I’d have been intrigued to see his movie but the lack of understanding of the most basic sci-fi concepts that he displayed in his interviews did have me concerned I’ve not seen a lot of Fargo or Legion to have a strong opinion either way on Hawley but it seems at least that he has a reputation for doing smart entertaining TV which is an encouraging start All of which makes me wish that somebody would just hire Hawley to take over the tv shows from the deeply mediocre people currently running them Why waste him on a big-budget movie that’s unlikely to earn a profit when you could instead use him to get the television shows back on track The Trek TV writers are just fine where they are Show us the data and stats to back up that derision kmart it’s hard to see this as a conversation I totally accept that you and Bryant Burnette loathe Secret Hideout’s streaming Trek offerings it’s your personal opinion/assessment based on your own preferences What’s getting up my nose is that there are repeated assertions about the lack of market success without evidence to back those assertions it’s beginning to feel like you’re trying to push a narrative that validates your own disappointment What I find when I look for stats is that else shows are doing well enough to build market both in the traditional Trek franchise markets in the US UK and Germany while also extending the global reach to Latin America This judgement isn’t about marketing or dollars and cents If your hackles are raised about market success then complain to companies that don’t disclose the data not to somebody addressing the ineptitude of the writing and the usually godawful visual calls As to particulars on the writing and the rest you can review numerous past posts of mine covering this in exhaustive detail I wrote a very negative review of TNG s1 intended for a fanzine that the guy didn’t wind up actually issuing and even that was mild compared to my disdain for the utterly wrongheaded creative calls on DSC and PICARD — it’s like they’ve got Abrams’ brain stuck into their writer’s room or something Legion and Fargo are pretty good on FX I heard I am SO happy Tarantino will not be near this movie now Like you I was originally intrigued with the idea didn’t care the movie would be R rated but the second he opened his mouth about not understanding how the Kelvin universe worked made it very clear he should stick to what he knows and stay away from science fiction Or at least a known property like Star Trek and make his own thing As for Hawley never seen Fargo but watched the first two seasons of Leigon strange is not the right word for it but close enough ;) I don’t think he would go that surreal for Star Trek but he is a great story teller either way you don’t need to get your head around it since your understanding of what happened is inaccurate Tarantino walked away from the project when he decided to retire from filmaking I’m pretty sure Tarantino’s involvement in this project never got much past Tarantino talking about it a lot and the studio taking a look at a story outline This was never a project that was ever going to progress any further then that The nuTrek fanbois were very transient anyway Can’t blame the fans when the studio treated the films as an after thought it’s time for a new perspective on the franchise Kelvin movies have dated considerably already considering they arent that old Better leaving them where they were and move forward If the are going to reboot the cast of a new Star Trek movie then my suggestion is forget making the movie I believe that they will not make a profit if they do reboot I know that I have no desire to see a new rebooted cast Star Trek will be dead in a few more generations anyway due to the fact that they have done nothing to promote it to younger fans through regular TV Perhaps they need a reminder that not all of the viewing public can afford one streaming channel less more multiple streaming channels If I had to pick one it would be Disney plus which is home to Marvel I am one of the original fans of Star Trek but to be honest I have not seen any of the new streaming Star Trek shows If I am going to pay to see Star Trek then I want to watch it on the big screen I also never liked Picard as the captain of the Enterprise I doubt we will ever get another Star Trek movie anytime soon Quentin Tarantino is obviously not going to make one at least Star Trek is alive and well on the TV side of things The crazy thing is even if the Hawley movie does happen we probably won’t see it until 2023 at this point given everything That will be SEVEN YEARS since Beyond came out Meanwhile on the TV side it’ll probably be on its fifteenth new Star Trek show by then; a Quark and Rom sitcom showing Rom’s life as the Grand Nagus while Quark is always getting into one crazy scheme after another his brother has to get him out of And I’m glad Tarantino won’t be anywhere near Star Trek WB seems to have concluded that the DC universe is better as a series of stand alone features I suspect Paramount (or who ever ends up acquiring the studio or it’s catalog) will probably handle Trek in a similar fashion moving forward 1.) Not likely Paramount (or any smaller studio) survives this recession 2.) CBS will need to find another studio if they stay in the motion picture business 4.) No one has really stepped up to say they could make a Trek movie for 100-125MM 5.) Not really sure Hawley has anything to proceed with other then a letter of interest His comments seem to suggest he’ll get around to it once he’s done with his current committments Who knows how long that could be with the Rona resurging The franchise should focus on TV for the time being The powers that be wanted Star Trek to be like Star Wars and Marvel superhero movies but that obviously didn’t work it is insane for them to walk away from that kind of bank They just need to be a lot smarter on where they put their money (no more millions to a star hidden under latex no more unnecessary CGI when cheap extras would have worked just as well.) Biggest earners doesn’t translate to most profitable Look at TWOK’s cost to profit margin — now that’s huge Making more expensive big-budget movies like the Abrams pics mandates a huge return to ensure actual success Expecting Abrams to produce an economically sound low-budget TREK picture is like expecting David Fincher to shoot a movie in 45 days — ain’t gonna happen “Expecting Abrams to produce an economically sound low-budget TREK picture is like expecting David Fincher to shoot a movie in 45 days — ain’t gonna happen.” Where is it written that Abrams has to be the one to make the next movie Bad Robot extended their Paramount deal so Abrams will be xprod on whatever they make I certainly can hope he isn’t involved in the Hawley as that just puts above the line baggage into the budget as well as taste monitors in the crapper I thought all the Hawley/Tarantino discussion was an indication that it wouldn’t be Bad Robot anymore “Star Trek movies was never popular anyway.” There is NOTHING accurate (or grammatical) about that statement and the film franchise as a whole is very profitable if Paramount was having visions of ST being Avengers profitable a better comparison would be to the X-Men movies that consistently return 300-500MM will get green lit all day long Sadly I don’t think we will see the Kelvin cast again After an excellent start and cool alternate timeline concept in 2009 they waited too long to release the next installment which coupled with a totally inept tie-in to the 50th anniversary with Beyond I would still love to read what Orci had penned for the 09 follow-up History will be relatively kind to them in the way one is to a puppy that used to always crap in your shoes but was also cute I enjoyed the Kelvin movies but I’m more of a Star Wars fan I guess Star Trek will go on because it has to do so I wasn’t that crazy about a TOS reboot on the big screen but I understood why they did it and at the time it was the right direction to go in It was a good idea to bring the franchise back to the characters that started it all and try to set up a younger fanbase at the same time I was even there at the original premiere in Sydney in 2009 I was maybe five rows up from where Abrams and the cast was Because it was just great to see Star Trek BACK and on a grand level we haven’t seen since TMP I have certainly been mixed on the films overall like a lot of people but I ALWAYS said that you want these movies to succeed because if they do eventually we will get another show again (which is what most of us wanted) and just more Star Trek in general Yes many aren’t happy with the new shows today And many hate the fact someone from those films are leading the franchise but Star Trek IS back and there is time to see it develop in different ways and yes hopefully better ways I don’t care that much if we ever see another Kelvin movie or not especially since I never been all that interested in a TOS reboot and more interested in seeing new characters and settings. But I fully support if another one happens But we’re now at a point ANYTHING can happen in the Star Trek universe frankly and that’s what excites me most And frankly that includes the Kelvin movies when they decided to make a new permanent universe for those movies along side the prime universe so it opens up the possibilities in SO many ways Don’t think so small and just nostalgia all the time That’s why in so many ways I’m way more excited for Discovery next season than I am for Picard and even Pike And even though many thought the Kelvin movies made the universe actually feel smaller in some ways with its actual stories it still gave us an expanded multiverse where you can do practically anything in and I’m truly hoping we move into others in the years to follow whether or not Noah Hawley’s trek moves forward or not is should Star Trek leave the big screen for awhile I think the Trek brand is doing better on the streaming platform than on the silver screen right now…… Star Wars is doing rather well because of Disney Star Trek movies could get better in the future Second and third ones I don’t care at all Many people consider BEYOND the best of the three it’s good to know that the Kelvin movies have some champions in Trek fandom I’m completely onboard with the strategic concept that acknowledges that there isn’t a single homogeneous Trek audience and that the franchise needs to have a range of offerings to survive and grow whether one likes Kelvin films 1 and 3 better or 1 and 2 better (clearly two different audiences) the unfortunate thing is that none of them have much longevity at least they don’t seem to be pulling in New audiences through streaming I know that I haven’t been able to get our kids to watch them The other didn’t last 15 minutes into the first film I don’t see the Kelvin movies engaging new fans at this point TOS and Enterprise seem to be endlessly appealing as our kids cycle through the 20 hours available on CTV Sci-fi channel (DS9 is something that they watch occasionally Discovery and Picard are definitely interesting for them even though they’re something they watch with a parent due to the 14+ ratings First Kelvin was THE low-point in franchise history for me outside of some really bad TNG eps (gave up on ENT and VOYAGER they probably had worse stuff.) Second Kelvin was not quite as bad BEYOND was actually kinda fun and even touching but act 3 ran WAY too long and killed some of the joy Don’t see what Abrams is serving up that you all have found so tasty I enjoyed 2009 and appreciated what they were trying to do Beyond presented the first original standalone Star Trek story fans had seen in years Hopefully we’ll never see a Kelvin Trek movie again They were weak rehashes of what’s come before and a complete contradiction of canon I think Tarantino will be a divisive and polarizing idea for Star Trek Star Trek has survived over 50 years without swearing They all argue that Roddenberry couldn’t blow some limbs or use inappropriate language due to the restrictions and previous limits of Television I wonder if he will agree heading on this new trend His vision was all about hope and the improvement of humanity An optimist portrayal of our future where we are all better than what we are today One thing that I enjoy the most about Star Trek right at this moment is that now I can see these shows with my kid That a new generation is producing the shows and cursing does not necessarily improve the quality of the new productions Rick Berman and his team were successful heading into that direction until they didn’t not talking about DS9 which was amazingly executed now learning all this with trial and error he realized that they need to go back to the very beginning Trekkers and Trekkies are beggin for decades for him to realize that they have to go back to a leader like Anson Mount’s Pike I think this is why Pike and Strange New Worlds could be a big hit for Kurtzman Hope and positivity has to be present in STSNW After working with the franchise for over a decade Strange New Worlds has all the elements for success I am enjoying very much watching Star Trek and Star Wars with my kid One thing that I really like from Star Wars is that they do everything for a wider audience it has…But going Taratino will be terrible Could be Discovery Mirror Universe on Steroids But what I was trying to say is that before we saw one scene here and there Tarantino will be the Cursing and Blood during the whole movie I’m sorry but I just don’t see how Tarantino could possibly be more divisive and polarizing than Harlan Ellison But for that matter Roddenberry was a rather polarizing and divisive figure in his own right The Bible Belt did NOT consider STAR TREK of the 1960s “family friendly” in that era You describe a totally safe and timid Trek which certainly wasn’t the STAR TREK that I launched with into my teen manhood years even as Harlan would forcibly argue it was in regards to his script And “Let’s get the hell out of here.” crossed the swearing line for Trek long ago I am talking in regards to extreme violence And I am talking about that the line for what is considered “extreme” is constantly moving and the stories Gene wanted to tell were constantly butting into it STAR TREK was created expressly to confront and get around the censoring of Gene’s ideas considered too extreme for HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL Your idea of STAR TREK as some sort of “safe” series was only true of the Filmation animated one STAR TREK from the get go was intended to hold a mirror up to the inequities of the so-called “safe” status quo while holding out the hope that in the future we will shake off the foolish fearfulness of the “other” that fuels those inequities If STAR TREK leaves you unsettled but hopeful If watching STAR TREK leaves you feeling warm fuzzy and safe with our current state of affairs My forbidden dream of trekkie is to have a great director with every film Once Tarantino and the time after Nolan or Villeneuve and then Bay and so on courageously experimenting under the supervision of one or more experts of the canon My favorite thing about the Kelvin Universe is the actors I would like very much to see a conclusion with this group if that is what the executive want to move forward Very unfortunate what happened to Star Trek Enterprise We were all left up in the air with no closure Even the last episode was not Star Trek Enterprise i thought Paramount would be interested in using Tarantino’s story even if he did not direct it I guess without him in the Directors chair it wouldn’t be as much of a draw and there isn’t a shred of evidence to suggest that these movies never got much past people talking about them over drinks I thought the REVENANT writer did at least a full treatment for QT and Par Or am I misremembering stuff said about the SJ Clarkson proto ST IV as being about the Tarantino My exercise in reading between the lines usually kicks in when actual production details are lacking but fan sites like this one are more then happy to fill in the blanks Top it off with talent not actually being in the loop on anything Smith’s screenplay may very well be locked away in a file cabinet at the Paramount lot somewhere Gathering dust next to the WWZ sequel that Guess I’ll be adding WWZ to the huge list of projects Fincher was on-board for and ultimately did not end up making 20,000 LEAGUES was another big one several years back I remember that it was just about 20 years ago when I had a meeting with the lady who ran Morgan Freeman’s company about doing a making-of book on RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA when Fincher was going to direct that with mocapped faces on CG bodies for microgravity scenes They were still hoping to get a draft that increased Jimmy’s part (the guy who flies the skycycle) enough to get Pitt interested I remember arguing with someone from another site after the first Kelvin movie was released who was convinced the Kelvin universe (although we didn’t call it that at the time ;)) was now the ‘true’ universe and the prime universe was now forever dead and buried especially the TNG era which he was convinced we would NEVER see again in any universe I kept saying that you can’t just abandon 40 years of stories and characters because one movie had a strong opening weekend But he was so convinced the prime universe was gone and that the Kelvin universe was going to be what defined Star Trek for decades to come Picard is starting its second season after so much fanfare over its first after Beyond failed we don’t even know when we’ll get another Star Trek movie and if so It’s very strange on the TV side things are happening at warp speed but the movie side is completely questionable right now nothing EVER truly dies in Star Trek and B how short sighted a lot of Star Trek fans are Eventually everything can come around again because Star Trek has such a huge fanbase and if something was popular once with them And yes that includes the Kelvin universe as well obviously I hope we do get at least one more movie with the Kelvin cast although I have a feeling Paramount is ready to move on and probably will get something new with the Hawley movie (if that even happens) But it doesn’t mean we’ll never see those characters or universe again like a decade but I have a feeling we’ll see it back in some form It is amazing to see where things are right now Star Trek is doing things I never thought it would do It’s going to the far flung future in Discovery soon and is now an animated comedy We are now getting a Pike show out of all things and I wouldn’t be shocked if another TNG spin off show is announced in a few years So who knows where the Kelvin universe will land in time But oddly it was not really planned at all lol I moved to Australia that year and not four months after I was there just read the the world premiere was coming a week before to the Sydney opera house; literally just two miles from where I was working at the time I had only planned to just go to the premiere pester Abrams about what was the island and call it a day I was offered a ticket twenty minutes before the movie started by a staffer and yeah But even though I don’t think that movie ‘saved’ Star Trek the way others believe it did clearly it re-energized it and I think gave it a new direction You can argue if the direction was good or bad but it made people interested in Star Trek again who may have gotten tired of it by the time Enterprise came around (and I count myself in that category even though I now love Enterprise) And yes if it wasn’t successful I don’t know if we would have Discovery or Picard now I mean as you said we probably would’ve gotten another show regardless but if those movies bombed the wait could’ve been even longer because it would’ve told them Trek needed a longer rest never say something’s dead and gone in the Trek franchise TOS only lasted 3 years on original broadcast TAS got cancelled before the second season ran and wooden animation notwithstanding had our kids riveted on dvd 40 years later I don’t know what’s next for the cinematic feature side of the franchise or whether the Kelvin movies will attract new audiences down the line But I do know enough not to make sweeping statements about what will work or not Star Trek comes back around again and again I mean even the actors themselves who say they are done with Trek still manage to show up Nimoy was RETIRED from acting and he ended up playing Spock in the first two Kelvin movies Stewart said for years he had no real interest in playing Picard again and now he’s back They even convinced Spiner to play Data again even if it was to give him a final resolution I’m hoping they can convince Kate Mulgrew to get back in her space suit holding a nice cup of black coffee soon too But that tells you everything when actors who hasn’t played these characters for 15-20 years and had no plans to until someone just called them up tells you that no one can really predict anything in this franchise So even if we don’t get another Kelvin movie right away I don’t think we should just write them off altogether any more than all the other previous series There is SO much Star Trek being produced and with so many ideas and formats happening they can all appear in some form if not a full on movie again they originally just wanted Patrick Stewart to play Picard in a Short Trek and now he’s in his own show ALL these shows are getting a second life now Discovery is only on AA because of how successful shows like Voyager is doing on Netflix So I wouldn’t be shocked to see the characters from any of the past shows now It’s harder obviously because that show took place so much earlier than the others but anything is possible now with so much of it coming unlikely stuff happens all the time now (and did way back when with Connery returning as 007 in the 80s): Ford back as Han/Deckard (seriously did anyone think that could ever happen back in the 90s or even the 00s) Linda Hamilton (& Cameron) coming back to Terminator and as you say the most unlikely ones ever were Nimoy (in a mega budget TOS era summer movie after the complete failure of Trek on film and tv) & Stewart/Spiner (in a mega budget sequel to Nemesis how insane/utterly unbelievable is that?!). and look at the current news with Keaton returning as batman literally all bets are off now when it comes to returning actors in belated sequels..so wouldnt rule out more Kelvin movies and even Shatner returning (either as he is now or CGI deaged to the movie era or even TOS era) I’d like to see them mirror the original series cast and have an extended break a trilogy of Trek films that feature all new characters or just a couple of stand alones with all new cast and have the Kelvin crew stay off the screen until at least 2026 (ten years after Beyond) or even longer Then have them return to effectively do their version of the TOS movie all red uniform era so you’d have a distict line between their early adventures (09 Those movie era films could then be slower less frantic to mirror the cast’s age at that point more ‘thinky’ plots as opposed to what we have had in the Kelvin universe until this point I’d love to see an updated take on that TOS movie era of Star Trek It seems like the eternal forgotten at this point (Not to mention the gap betwen TUC and TNG never being touched) since ENT everything is either a century before TOS alternative universe coloured uniforms set slighty before or during it’s just there’s way more places to prequel than where most of it tends to end up can totally see a belated 4th Kelvin cast movie in a few years set in the 80s ‘movie era’ with them all in the maroon uniforms (updated of course),and stuff like dark hair Kirk the plot could be something like Trek II/III meets Trek VI with Cumberbatch returning as khan and Eve as Marcus (and maybe Bana as Nero cameoing at the end to set up ST5. maybe he was captured/reanimated by the Borg and is now Locutus.and maybe Vger is something to do with it too lol) That was a lot of scrolling to get down to the comments section Good thing my cat was here to keep his paw on the down arrow Click on the “XX COMMENTS SO FAR” link under the headline picture Second was the worst of the entire franchise. The third movie was pretty good and recognizable Star Trek buut I will not miss it if never comes back ST.09 breathed new life into the franchise and they sucked the life back out of it with the TV shows where’s the Trekmovie article on Woke JJ’s new Bad Robot rules on combatting “white supremacy” in the workplace no doubt there’s a lot of “white supremacy” at Bad Robot But I would like to give him a hard time for hiring Benedict Cumberbatch when he had plenty of warning not to do that if he was making a movie about Khan when your principles are solid to begin with you never have to apologize for obviously bad casting decisions or issue Woke guides within your own company on combatting “white supremacy” in the workplace to placate the priests of the new orthodoxy because I can already tell where he will be apologizing in another 10 years for the things he’s doing today I could warn him just as I–as many of us here–did about Cumberbatch What a truly entertaining timeline you earth people have created here Strange New Worlds may fill the TOS-sized hole in many hearts The Star Trek: Discovery panel at PaleyFest NY on October 6th had the cast talking about the stakes of sacrificing everything they knew to go 930 years into the future Mary Wiseman talked about how Tilly will be spending a lot of time processing that loss with whom she has a very complicated relationship She also said that Tilly and Stamets might “chafe a bit” now that Tilly sees herself as less of a mentee we asked Wiseman a few questions about season three So definitely you’ll get to see her have a little fun and break out of her comfort zone a bit Not like a Monopoly game—less than a Monopoly game and I think she still knows that she wants to serve but what that means in the future is a little bit up in the air So she’s going to have to start finding her own way and looking for guidance wherever she can get it Tilly getting promoted at the end of season 1 because nobody wants to start the conversation about getting their own rooms (laughs) I hope they live together forever and they each get married and have kids and live in the same small room I think we’ve seen someone who didn’t know how to hold their own space somebody who was deeply and profoundly intimidated but had big dreams get closer and closer to achieving those dreams and then find a way to kind of stand up straight and hold space And I think you’re going to see a continuation of that journey this season a command mentality and starting to allow herself to be a person who is a leader I assume that anytime anybody else says something smart obviously when she finds out that she was a captain in the mirror universe [that] was one of the most fun things I ever shot Also the season finale of season one when they’re in the Orion uh… not colony where we’re all wearing leather and she straightens her hair and she’s with Georgiou and it’s really scary That’s maybe the most fun I’ve ever had in Star Trek It was silly and serious and fun and I got to work with Clint Howard and I got to get high (laughs) and it was just a blast There have been some truly beautiful moments this season that I’m really excited to share with people but there’s gonna be some great stuff for the fans that I’m very excited to share (laughs) I really brought Tilly with me to New York today We’ll have more Discovery interviews from the red carpet at PaleyFest throughout the week The most irritating character to ‘grace’ the Star Trek universe by far The Tilly character – unprofessional emotionally unstable and a million miles from anything even remotely representing resilience embodies all that is wrong with the writing on DIS The fact anyone so inept and demonstrably the weakest of links ever made it onto the Starfleet books suggests that SF Academy has no screening process whatsoever You’re calling Tilly the most annoying character in a franchise that includes Neelix and Wesley Crusher a worse character than either Neelix or Wesley I’d say he and Tilly have more in common as socially awkward yet brilliant crewmen But want more of the growth we saw in the 1st half of season 2 The new writers at the end of the season didn’t seem to know what to do with her Tilly should be placed in a torpedo tube and fired into the nearest sun I relate more to Reg and I think Reg is more believable Neelix and Wesley never annoyed me the way Tilly does I actually shout at the TV screen when Tilly is on at full Tilly Crusher was a victim of fans not wanting to see a kid on the bridge as they felt it somehow compromised the show’s integrity to have a boy who was smarter than most of the adults; he was as much a manifestation of fan insecurity as anything else Neelix was annoying but at least earnest in his over the top desire to be helpful And I for one found Barclay to be a far more believable relatable and just likeable character; he was just someone who didn’t have a lot of experience being around people and I think he played that well Tilly is just an abraisive ditz; her constant babbling is obnoxious and distracting; her need to be noticed is annoying I cringe and reach for the MUTE button on my remote whenever she shows up Neelix and Barclay were better integrated into their particular stories and plots brings the proceedings to a halt while her issue of the day is dealt with and then is usually pushed once again to the side so the crew can return to the task at hand Don’t know if that’s a failing of the writers not knowing what to do with the character or their trying to work around the actor’s limitations but either way she comes across as more of a distraction than an asset to the show The fans are in no way to blame for the Wesley Crusher character The faults there lie solely in bad writing and bad acting he’s only of Voyager’s ONLY fun characters Actually we can blame the writers for these characters They should have offed Neelix and kept Kes Weasly…never came across as annoying to me The character actually improved with season 3 and then he was pretty much off the series In a real military organization….she would be discharged (^_^) I actually feel so sorry for Will Wheaton…he actually has been traumatized by all the online bullying He didn’t deserve any of the hate that he got for the role there’s an argument that Data is pretty annoying are far more believable and realistic as people than Tilly is written at the same time as super-humanly smart in all fields she is winning marathons against visibly fitter crewmates ;) these writers simply do not understand how human psychology works Maybe they should start by reading up on the “Dunning-Kruger effect” to understand what intellectually outstanding scientists are really like in psychological terms not all the really smart people are introverted monomaniacs monomania can be an advantage in getting a PhD finished that go on to make the lasting contributions are often the ones that can reach across disciplines …and it’s true that even at one of those places social extroversion coupled with being smart can be annoying Tilly’s extroversion’s leaving her unsatisfied with a pure research career and driving her towards a leadership role I think her mix of seemingly contradictious traits (polymath is not the main problem) do not hit the right note in any of the episodes the charming talent who easily sells his vision and excites people even with dry science is maybe better exemplified in the movies by Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man It’s not hard to see such a person would rise very high But I will insist they are almost never THE smartest and Tilly certainly doesn’t strike that note there The way she is written and the actresses’ portrayal seem off (overemotional but at the same time we are told she is analytical and all-knowing) and thus annoy a great deal of viewers they weren’t as “in the face” and loud VS I suggest that you read an interview with Musk’s first wife who met him when he was a student at Queen’s University and then decide how ‘in your face and loud’ someone of that brilliance and temperament is in their 20s Musk is a VERY different kind of extraverted; we are not talking “degree” here Tilly’s portrayed as a “groupie” but Musk is really the politically incorrect non-conformist who doesn’t mind at all p!ssing off alot of people and getting into fights over his views and his goals He places his ideas and his focus on the bigger and in that he is much more in line with the scientist persona than Tilly She is the one who exemplifies nerdy awkwardness along with nerdy brilliance it’s awfully hard to take this from a young woman They seem to relate more to male characters who have the issue I was not fond of some of the awkward Tilly scenes in Season 2 but I hope things will improve for her in S3 Not everything is “subconscious sexism” (go figure) Her “special blend” of low-brow gregariousness and seeming super-intelligence (only courtesy of inept writers) would be just as egregious in a man’s body I read a comment last night on another site which made me laugh and I think totally accurate – “…she’s the Jar Jar Binks of Star Trek.” since God is a fictional entity whose introduction in a work of fiction has cause a lot of harm… I’d agree Tilly must have some incriminating photos of SF Academy’s governing body When are they going to announce the Pike show – Or did they think that was no longer on our minds:) this whining for Pike is really getting annoying I’m sure YOU’LL be the first person they call Any further discussion about the Pike show is going to require prior permission by forum master Phil It is annoying that people are begging for news about a show that may not exist this isn’t related to the article about Mary Wiseman Why is it whining or negative to be enthusiastic about a potential new show Most of us here were extremely skeptical that TPTB for Discovery could recast Pike Spock or Number One and offer anything that worked at all but Kirksean is asking about whether there was any news at all about the Pike show if I’m reading Kurtzman’s response to an audience question correctly it sounds as though the business case isn’t fully sold for Pike’s Enterprise with CBS yet Which makes it all the more important for fans that want the show to keep the positive pressure going I think you are on to something that they still need to sell the now missing “episodic case” and as far as I can see there is definitely an audience there for this Maybe it would be better placed on CBS where even casual viewers can catch it from time to time Pike’s Enterprise is perfect for this I wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t as high budget as Discovery either Go away if you don’t want to read fans’ comments That’s they number one reason they will never make a Pike Show A Pike show is currently in the planning stages He found it at the same site where he found proof that God doesn’t exist You’re clearly not much of a Trek fan I have a pic from a run in with her in New York last year Let’s see Captain Killy in the 32nd century Let’s hope that with the freedom of no longer being a prequel enables the writers to forget about those first two awful seasons and produce something original You forget that Killy and the mirror Discovery were mercifully blown to bits by the Klingons off screen towards the end of season 1 I think we will see her on the Section 31 show Season 3 of Discovery is starting to resemble Andromeda Andromeda is back on Amazon Prime and CTV Sci-fi channel in Canada I can’t get through more than the occasional episode But Tilly is easily the show’s worst character It’s not the actor’s fault–it’s the writing She’s just irritating and not at all fun as she sucks all the energy out of any scene she’s in but agree that sometime the writing of her character goes to far and it becomes a caricature I don’t find it particularly annoying I think there is a lot of potential for the character and I hope the writers dial it in a bit better going forward She is just so annoying when she opens her mouth Last week we detailed a theory about “The Burn,” and this week we take on another fan theory that we think has some merit We’re going to go through it step-by-step building up to the conclusion we think is a pretty good bet NOTE: The following analysis speculates about the third season of Star Trek: Discovery and contains SPOILERS Star Trek: Discovery jumped forward 930 years for season three During two seasons spent in the 23rd century but all of them were left behind as they flew into that wormhole The 32nd century has been touted as a blank slate when it comes to canon But the jump into the future doesn’t mean everything is new Canon still allows for some potential familiar characters to still be around in the 32nd century And there are a number of intriguing possibilities but we have one particular fan-favorite candidate in mind The trailers released so far have shown a number of familiar races including Andorians But there was one race which is new to Discovery and is our first clue for a character that we think is going to make a come back When the first trailer for season 3 trailer was released at NYCC last fall there were a couple of shots of a familiar Federation member race the Trill were introduced in one episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and then became fully realized members of the Federation (with some slight changes) on Deep Space Nine mostly through the experiences of Jadzia (Terry Farrell) and Ezri Dax (Nicole de Boer) both “joined” Trill who each carried the Dax symbiont At the 2019 NYCC panel co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman confirmed the show would be visiting the Trill homeworld in season three noting some of the show’s new characters will have to go there for a “very specific reason.” generally choosing from a group of very young adult volunteers The symbionts can live outside of hosts in special pools where they procreate and communicate telepathically (seen as zaps of lighting) with each other and with unjoined Trill “Guardians.” Two Trill symbionts communicating telepathically in DS9’s “Equilibrium” co-showrunner Michelle Paradise revealed that Adira (who gets introduced in episode 3) and Gray (introduced in episode 4) have a “very unique and specific relationship.” revealing how the Trill will play a significant part in season three: Gray is Trill so there’s a whole Trill mythology in Trek that we’re going to be leaning into with this… What’s interesting about being one thousand years ahead is that we can play them in new ways So you may think that you know a particular species to be a certain way and maybe a thousand years later they’re a little bit different than you might expect We can see what appear to be symbiont pools in both of the season 3 trailers, likely the Caves of Mak’ala on Trill a nice shot of Michael Burnham in a cave with one of these pools One detail of note for this image is that Burnham still has her 23rd-century Starfleet badge so this scene is likely from earlier in the season before she starts wearing the 32nd-century Starfleet badge A good guess would be it comes from episode 4 Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham looks at a Trill symbiont pool It has been established that the third season of Discovery will be set in the year 3188 with the crew jumping 930 years into the future via a wormhole This also sets the show over 800 years after the TNG era Unjoined Trill appear to have lifespans similar to humans while it was shown they can be vulnerable without being joined or within their special pools there is no established limit to the lifespan of Trill symbionts if properly cared for In 2367 when Jadzia was joined with the Dax symbiont it was 349 years old and it was then transferred to Ezri seven years later A symbiont uses telepathy to help Jadzia Dax remember one of her other past hosts So we have an unjoined Trill who wants a symbiont who will be introduced early in the season The only announced name for that character is “Gray,” with no second name (Joined Trill take on the symbiont’s name after joining.) Gray is also in the age range that the Trill prefer for hosts We have a visit to the Trill homeworld and the pools where symbionts live We have the promise of something “very familiar.” And we have no known upper limit on the age of symbionts It has also been suggested that even though Gray is the one who has dreamed of being joined It’s possible that even though Adira appears human they are partially Trill or in some other way able to join with Dax the character was only announced with one name There may also be a hint to this twist with that original announcement which noted Gray will have to “adapt when his life takes an unexpected turn.” That turn could be Dax joining Adira The latest season three trailer also shows a young person that could be either Gray or Adira in one of the Trill pools surrounded by those telepathic zaps of the symbionts All the pieces are in place to join Gray (or Adira) and Dax on Discovery. Of course, there is no definitive proof, that is why this is a theory. However, just like there was a narrative reason behind the theory for “The Burn,” the same is true for bringing back Dax Jumping into the 32nd century was done to free the show from the constraints being a prequel the show often ran into conflicts with established elements of 23rd-century canon the creatives on the show reintroduced many canon characters The show has always wanted the freedom to do their own thing but also get the benefits of playing with familiar elements of Trek canon Assuming they don’t want to entirely give this up then choices become a bit more limited in the 32nd century with the exception of immortals like Q (or perhaps some longlifers like Guinan although we don’t know just how long El-Aurians live) Jadzia and Ezri Dax are very popular characters and the whole nature of the Trill allows for a single character to help tie the past to the new future via the memories of their past hosts Deep Space Nine often used this narrative device to help fill in elements of Dax’s past lives and introduce us to her past hosts Jadzia Dax talks to Sisko about her memories of the 23rd century in “Trials and Tribble-ations” There are even multiple ways to allow for the new host to meet past ones This introduces the possibility of guest-star appearances by either Terry Farrell or Nicole de Boer so Jadzia Dax or Ezri Dax could meet Gray (or Adira) Dax Ezri Dax has a vision of Joran Dax in “Emergence” In the novel set in between seasons one and two Admiral Cornwell pairs Emony up with Section 31 operative Phillipa Georgiou the former Terran emperor figures out that the Trill are a joined species something that was still a secret during the 23rd century and wouldn’t be known to other members of the USS Discovery crew Of course, the extended universe of Star Trek books are not official canon, but it is worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery: Die Standing was released in July which is likely around the time that season three was originally planned before the pandemic slowed down post-production Emony Dax is a major character in the latest Discovery novel Actress Terry Farrell takes pride in this aspect of the character We reported how at Star Trek Las Vegas 2019 she described the character as “pansexual.” And by the way—she said this a few weeks after production on the third season of Discovery began — TrekMovie.com (@TrekMovie) August 1, 2019 And let’s not forget how much the creative team behind Discovery likes to showcase diversity on the show. CBS even sent out a press release announcing the introduction of Gray and Adira highlighting how they were the first transgender and non-binary regular cast members in the franchise executive producer and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman had this to say about the Trill: The Trill have always been a very interesting case study on questions of identity because you’re carrying so many different identities within one consciousness And we explore that a lot with both characters you always want to be applying that idea to all your characters Everyone is constantly in a state of self-discovery Jadzia Dax and Lenara Kahn in “Rejoined” And there is even more leeway in this case as it is well-established that every joined Trill is a new and unique individual who happens to also share the memories of all those past hosts The season 3 premiere of Star Trek: Discovery arrives in three weeks Do you have your own theory for the Trill in season 3 Keep up on all the Star Trek: Discovery news and analysis at TrekMovie.com no… you mean DAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Out of all the Trill symbionts they could have used why did Michael Burnham have to be connected to Sarek and Spock Why bring Pike and the Enterprise into season 2 of Discovery that’s right… because the Discovery writers are lazy and unoriginal and they just can’t help themselves until they wipe all of their asses with every bit of Star Trek canon And when they don’t ‘wipe all of their asses with every bit of Star Trek canon’ they’re ‘lazy hacks who haven’t seen an episode of Star Trek in their life’ but a nearly1,200-year-old symbiont would seem like a stretch It states in the article that symbiont lifespans have not been given in canon On Earth the Greenland shark is believed to live for hundreds of years there’s an Antarctic sponge that can live up to 10,000 years and the oldest trees are estimated to be around 80,000 years old Why can’t the rest of the Galaxy be so diverse We have characters like the Q who are literally immortal and many species can live hundreds to thousands of years old Trills wouldn’t be breaking any records in that regard it’s always funny to me how people try to differentiate this stuff Replicators are ridiculous but transporters will be invented any day now People complain about the bumpy alien forehead syndrome but have no problem with the fact pretty much every alien has 2 arms People complain about Q but Apollo being a real life Greek God seems legit but warp travel isn’t any less ridiculous Holographic doctors are over the top but a talking time portal just chilling alone on a planet somewhere waiting for anyone to come along and reshape the galaxy is totally realistic Mirror universes seem a bit out there but so are wormholes with non-corporeal aliens living inside them Picard being transferred to an synth body is just fantasy but no more fantasy than Vulcans who can die and carry their katras/souls in other people until they find a new body to transfer to both have the exact same level of ridiculousness In other words t’s Star Trek…just go with it And stop pretending like any of it is realistic I still question why a being of light particles can hold a med scanner but the holodeck and the EMH are [shrug] Star Trek magic Warping space has been postulated in science as a possible drive system but the transporter is a TOTAL fabrication and cannot happen people just trash DASH drive bc it’s not what they’re used to I have moaned about the Forehead of the Week and Planet of the Hats tropes At least on Lower Decks they had a person from the same race as Arex with three arms [and a diabolical laugh no less!] … Lower Decks can do some of those REALLY alien things I like Trek to be believable WITHIN ITS SPHERE as a Science Fiction show [Even “The Expanse” fudges reality a bit And I love The Expanse as “hard” sci fi.] I love Discovery’s crew and look forward to meeting more characters I hope Linus made it to the future along with the wonderful core crew The franchise has never gone into what the symbiote offspring are like A child of two high level telepaths might have records of the parents’ memories and experiences imprinted on them somewhere between conception and birth I would be a way to move “Dax” forward without having to define how long the little worms can live I just find it funny when people literally tell you they don’t want to see ‘magical tech’ in Star Trek…as if they have not been watching magical tech since the show started How the hell is a talking time portal that can send you to any part of the universe or time not magical??? It’s considered one of the best Star Trek episodes of all time But NOW you want ‘realism’ in Star Trek? You didn’t have an issue with it when they went to a planet that can literally turn your thoughts into a reality Some guy at the end of the episode spouting off a line that there is stuff underground that builds it for you doesn’t make it any less magical kids But then I have to sit through posts reading how it’s hard to get into Voyager because tachyon particles don’t really exist or no way does a mycellium network make any sense Did you just turn on the show yesterday for the first time or something Did you seriously think you were watching the TV version of ‘2001’ Do you think dilithum crystals are totally real You want to complain about holodecks but time traveling to the 1980s to pick up whales feels very feasible to you Like you I don’t watch Star Trek for hard sci fi Ninety percent of Star Trek is just speculative sci fi at best But its so good BECAUSE it does an amazing job selling you on those concepts And of course they deal with real scientific concepts all the time which makes it feel more realistic but most of it’s how they are presented and resolved are hokum as well none of this is picking on Jimmy and his post And he even said he didn’t really care how old Trills are suppose to be I’m speaking in general to all the ‘you can’t do that in Star Trek’ fans out there who thinks just because Starfleet doesn’t issue lightsabers to their crews then its actually steeped in real science most of the time Everyone needs to stop picking apart the pseudoscience (that’s very heavy on the “pseudo” part) and just enjoy the show How about the “tech” in Firefly that was just a bunch of wires and Kaylee stringing random part names together Kyber crystals and “lightspeed jumping” get a free pass but Trek gets all the scrutiny At least Trek tries to make something at least superficially convincing Pseudoscience is a big part of Trek but it’s more about a philosophy — of how egalitarianism and cooperation as opposed to the pursuit of personal gain is what will create a brighter the mycelial network and spore drive strain credulity but that doesn’t diminish the quality or message of the show one bit but “subspace” — the biggest pseudoscientific plot device in all of Trek — strains credulity just as much I really like the idea of bringing back Dax It’s a tie to the past for those of us who are a little uncomfortable with completely abandoning canon and it gives Dax the opportunity to provide wisdom and guidance to a new crew who will definitely need it In the episode ‘Living Witness’ a backup of his hologram was found in the late 31st century and by the end he wants to make his way back to earth… Robert Picardo was already reportedly in talks to appear on S2 of Picard as the doctor so I imagine that would supersede his appearing on Discovery in that form I read somewhere that isn’t happening now Picardo said he had talked with the producers about it but they decided not to do it in the end I think this theory is close but not quite I think Gray may have been the *intended* candidate for Dax but I think non-Trill Adira gets that honor due to some reason we don’t yet know Plus I’m not sure that really is Gray floating in the pool We’ve already seen that certain non-Trill species can accommodate a symbiont (Riker did briefly) Plus Adira’s non-binary status may give them an unexpected advantage in joining with a symbiont That’s definitely Adira and not Gray floating in the symbiont pool Look carefully at the photo and they have prominent mole on the left of their neck similar to one Blue Del Barrio has in a few of their Instagram photos I think your theory is pretty close to what happens (assuming the symbiont is Dax) I was going to ask if that was Adira in the pool glad I reads through before posting redundantly Maybe Dad is intended for Gray or is joined with Gray and something happens and Adira becomes the host… this is something we discussed and now I feel it is worth adding that spin to the above article especially based on the original character descriptions If it was in fact Burnham who somehow gets the host it would kind of make Dax and Spock step siblings which would retroactively make Dax’s crush on Spock in Trials and Tribbe-ations a little creepy in Luke Skywalker-Princess Leia sort of way I would like to quote the infamous hard/vs soft taco shell commercial . But given this show’s track record of terrible writing I’ll have to see evidence of them managing to not ruin the character I never bought into that idea that it’s the third season where the shows get good I like TNG’s first season just fine; DS9 was DS9 from the very beginning; etc It’s like the even-numbers-only thing with the movies — it’s an urban legend this could be the season where Discovery finally works for me I certainly hope that ends up being the case TNG’s first season was almost unwatchably bad but it is nowhere near as bad as Discovery started out It didn’t become consistently great until the Dominion was introduced Discovery first season is still my worst season out of all the shows but it’s still the season I’m the least motivated to watch today And because its SO serialized it’s hard to just watch the episodes I really did like But the ones I really like I can still count on just one hand even if you liked TNG and DS0 in their first seasons I didn’t love either in their first seasons…but didn’t hate them either I thought TNG certainly had some bad episodes but I looked forward to it every week I was glued to that TV and I was just in love with the ship and the effects but mostly I was just happy to see new Star Trek it was just a bit more flat and dull story wise And it did take me longer to like the characters because they felt so different from what we saw in Star Trek before I loved most of the TNG characters right away….except Picard You have no idea how much I wanted that character dead ;) I was so disappointed we didn’t get a Kirk wannabe Riker kind of filled the role of Kirk but I wanted that for the Captain himself I just don’t think any of the other shows were fundamentally broken in their first seasons that way Discovery was; they improved but they were merely building on what was already working Maybe the same will end up being true of Discovery; only retrospect will tell me for sure it’s going to need wholesale reinvention in order to become a series I don’t dislike intensely That’s not true of any of the older shows And obviously I’m not defending Discovery since I said in this thread first season was my worst season out of any Star Trek show I had problems with second season but generally liked it as a whole Oddly its probably one of my favorite second season shows for Star Trek which is still not great but OK….so I’m allllllll over the place part of me is excited for season 3 just to read your reactions to it lol Your put downs of this show is some of the most entertaining stuff I read last season but I have a feeling it’s going to be a looooong season for you for some reason For some reason I feel I’m going to really like it But I also originally felt the same way with Picard I am actually kind of optimistic about the third season I like most of the characters; I like almost the entire cast; it looks great I just plain WANT to like any new Star Trek They just haven’t made it easy on me But I hope this season will change my mind I’ve got no rooting interest in continuing to dislike the show We all want to like the shows or we wouldn’t be watching them (and now paying for them ;)) There is just WAY too much stuff on these days we can just watch instead Hopefully next season will surprise us all DS9 has with Duet one of the best Star Trek episodes ever But maybe as a German you can relate to that story in a deeper way I’ve never seen much praise for Home Soil (“Ugly bags of mostly water!”) and the only thing good about Skin of Evil in my opinion is the ending with Tasha’s farewell speech Humans described from a totally different perspective.a non-humanoid lifeform that was harmed because they just could think in humsnoid perspectives Ethical debate on the rights of a species so different from humans… I like all of those and love several of them (“Duet” included) in fact the first season of DS9 was really good Also it showed a good starting point in the characters development just to see how far they had come by the end of season 7 I mostly enjoyed TNG Season 1 when it debuted The acting was pretty bad (especially Frakes and Sirtis) and the writing was worse (Code of Honor But the cast warmed up to their roles over time and the writing started showing great promise late in Season 1 (Heart of Glory Neutral Zone) and mid-Season 2 (after a relapse because of the 1988 writer’s strike.) DS9’s Season 1 is also lackluster compared to what followed Too many episodes in Season 1 played like rejected TNG stories and rarely embraced the new setting Once they were able to go down their own path but that wasn’t until probably Duet and In the Hands of the Prophets at the tail end of Season 1 You just unintentionally proved the opposite of your argument here You do understand that you can’t “prove” an opinion like they ‘ruined’ Pike and Spock so badly that there was huge demand for a spinoff but its writing has never been one of them Really enjoying these theory/speculation articles and discussions TrekMovie And it’s great to see them getting picked up and quoted elsewhere I’d also like to thank you for including Ezri Dax and the possibility of bringing back Nicole de Boer as well as Terry Farrell as Jadzia as pass life recollections or voices I can see how having a new and unexpected host for Dax was the logical closing of the circle for Sisko and Dax on DS9 It paves the way for Dax to be a unifying character beyond that one series it seems as though de Boer is still suffering some fan fallout for being the actor to play the new Dax it’s great to see fans have moved on and are ready for multiple Daxes Ezri has/had the potential to be a fascinating but there is more that could be explored and I’ve been hoping to see her in Picard and/or Lower Decks It would require some care across the writers rooms and series but it would be cool to see Dax appear across all the new series: Gray (or Adira) in Discovery Dax could literally appear on all these shows lol no I don’t think that needs to happen obviously but it would be nice to see them on one show But I think it would be fine if we got an appearance of Ezri Dax on Picard and then Gray or Adira Dax on Discovery But the latter would be a supporting/main role while Picard would just be more of an appearance like we got with Riker and Deanna in first season; but still open be able to come back in the future (no killing off!!) But yes you can do so much with Dax more than any other character not named Q she’s not Jadzia who obviously will be the bigger fan favorite given everything but I thought Erzi was great especially when you know it’s only going to be for a year but I liked how different she was She wasn’t as ‘cool’ or ‘fun’ as Jadzia but was still great to watch and became more confident as the show went on It’s surreal that we are now talking about all these characters again even if they are still not officially back yet But now they all have the potential to come back (they even brought freakin Data back) and it’s very exciting for fans It belatedly occurred to me that including Ebony Dax in a novel with Georgiou might be a set up for Ebony or another Dax to work with Georgiou in the S31 series but recognizing that there is a lot of Dax’s history that lies outside of canon Jadzia only dealt with what she had to for some of those hosts Sure it may not happen but Dax realistically could be part of any of these shows As long as there is a Trill around then it’s possible to include him/her And I’m always amazed how well so many novels or comics make these connections all the time like having Dax and Gerogiou together I guess its easier to do it when you don’t have to worry about trying to get the original actor for your story or how much you have to pay for them The book also has Finnegan from TOS episode Shore Leave as a character in the story I might pick up the book sounds interesting I’m not saying they should try and do more things like that in shows and films but the printed media does seem to make a lot of those connections because they have the freedom to and know fans would appreciate it this is the kind of rampant speculation I’m here for :) but I can’t help wondering where Q is in the 32nd century Funny I said in the Q thread I would love to them in Discovery in the 32nd century what if the Burn happened because of the Q???? you can’t rule anything out in the Star Trek universe I would imagine that he spends as much time in the 32nd century as he spends in the 24th Just do your stuff and stop ruining the rest Let this show ‘stand on its own,’ as the showrunners have said over and over again but have failed to do relying on Pike and Spock to drag them through season 2 Let this group blaze their own trail (or not) It’s pretty sad so many here are so desperate for characters from past shows to appear on DSC; doesn’t say much for the new ones they’ve created Discovery is not the first show where people wanted to see other known characters even after a show became immensely popular This has happened on literally every show starting with TNG no one is expecting to see any familiar characters in this time period of course but obviously fans like the idea of this theory But I have not read a single post anywhere where someone said they stopped watching such and such show because Riker Kirk or Janeway never showed up in an episode It’s just fans having fun speculating mostly And I know how you and others feel about the show But the reason I’m excited is because the show is now trailing its own way No show has ever done anything like this before and completely change their premise and setting after it already started Discovery can now be what I wish it was in season one And not something you are constantly comparing it with TOS because now its has the freedom to be whatever it wants I know people are still skeptical and have every right to be but we should at least acknowledge they are dong big things with this show; many ways no other show has ever done before THANK YOU TM for these articles theorizing about season 3 They are a lot of fun and its just nice to be able to speculate In fact my advice would be to do one every week leading up the premiere There are so many questions now that the second trailer has come out That out of anything else seems to be what most fans are interested in and want to know he/she has been a fan favorite from the first season And it would just be so cool to have them back This would be a great connection between everything we know from the 23rd/24th century to the 32nd And FINALLY a character from DS9 on one of these shows TNG and VOY characters thanks to DIS and PIC We gotten a Quark reference but that’s been the extent of it So it would be nice to get a permanent DS9 connection and a very popular character at the same time But the beauty of it is it can literally be played by anyone so what does it hurt But it never occurred to me until it was mentioned we may even get to see Jadzia or Ezri make an appearance And lastly as you said Trill’s are just a fantastic species in general That was the one thing that really excited me when we saw the first trailer As you said there is still a lot we don’t know about them even though two characters portrayed one for 7 seasons So much of Discovery first season really bothered me but one of those was because we now have this HUGE library of amazing Star Trek species and most of it ignored Yes most of them came out of the 24th century but it doesn’t mean they were all excluded from the 23rd century But the first half of Discovery what did we mostly see All these amazing species you have at your finger tips and you just go to the same tired well with the most familiar ones over and over again Trek has more than a half dozen species today from Cardassians to the Xindi But I will give Kurtzman MAJOR credit here because that changed a lot in season 2 obviously and with Short Treks Picard and now LDS we are getting a flurry of familiar and popular characters now from all the shows i wish there would be a Tiger summarize function TLDR: I really hope Trekmovie theory is right and Dax is on the show (But not a big deal if he/she isn’t) I’ve been saying this since the teaser i hope season 3 is a propper scifi-triller Considering they had an android able to do a mind meld in Picard I didn’t like how they portrayed the Trill in “The Host” with the symbiont completely overwhelming the host and having a human as a host Given how they handled stuff like Section 31 in Discovery I’m not sure I would like their take on Dax so they would have to find a way to truly honour the character rather than including Dax as a checkbox for a canon connection I don’t think it was necessary for him to know his fate The Discovery crew is definitely Dax’s kind of people Why not Q since he could jump around in time easily Nobody’s even really mentioned that as far as any of the articles I’ve seen on theories And they could use the original actor even which would be bad ass! Or maybe it’s the backup Doctor from Living Witness Where the EMH backup was stolen and reactivated 700 years later And then he stays for an undetermined amount of time before attempting to reach Earth to see if Voyager made it back It is nuts that The Doctor could be on this show too I don’t see it happening since they obviously have a doctor but I would love to see him show up just the same Doctors not just “a doctor” Tiger2 Tracy Pollard (played by Raven Dauda) will still be a recurring character on Discovery since Culber is taking on psychiatry/psychology but if he did join the show and was on the Discovery That’s actually why I was hoping he show up in Picard in season 2 because since that show isn’t Starfleet centric we can see him on the ship just being part of the crew and not have a ‘position’ like you would on a starship they could find something to give him a reason to be there Would like very much to send a letter to Kurtzman Can you imagine Ira’s team and creativity with Kurtzman’s visual design and special effects We may not have some of the producers and writers…also Nog I mean the original actors…but I know they can successfully pull an amazing show Dax could spent their life in the pool for a few hundred years and wouldn’t necessarily have to be joined with a myriad of other hosts in the time between the 24th and 32nd century The Dax we know could still be quite near to them I’d very much like to see Nicole de Boer be given the opportunity The character of Ezri Dax had a wonderful transition into one of the best female captains ever in the Relaunch Trek-lit novels It would be great to see that validated on screen de Boer sounds as though she’d be up for it she’s been playing a recurring ex-wife character on the Canadian series Private Eyes (on Ion in the US) She’s mainly working from Toronto where she lives with her school-aged daughter an appearance on one of the live-action series produced in the GTA would be straightforward The plot sounds too rediculous to be enjoyable and we’ll say a prayer for you while we enjoy Discovery exploring the future of Star Trek Even though I abandoned VHS many years ago (ha I am enjoying continuing to revisit many of the older shows I thought Seasons 1 and 2 of DSC were abysmally bad and am not signing on for S3 unless I see reviews and comments here which impress and just because something says ‘Star Trek” on it doesn’t mean I’m going to blindly follow it if I don’t think the content warrants it Is it just me or opens this up the possibility of a Jedzia/Ezri cameo She didn’t age at all (visibly) between 1893 and Picard’s era — and we don’t know how old she was in 1893 — so maybe her species has a *really* long lifespan It’s hard for me to find a character I liked least in the entire Trek universe Beyond that it seems gimmicky and tinged with desperation to me I guess there has to be some among us who dislike Dax Hope there’ll be some others that resonate with you that Star Trek works best with diverse ensembles that appeal to different audiences “Star Trek works best with diverse ensembles that appeal to different audiences.” How the suits at CBS at least could not have mandated this as smart BUSINESS is beyond me In light of many of the things we have seen in Discovery and Picard by now starting with Bryan Fuller’s inexplicable creative rampage at the beginning (inexplicable because he was not a Trek outsider like Chabon) I have reassessed my opinion on the role of network interference in the 1990s shows Sure it led to some ridiculous stuff like wrestling cameos and ultimately but the creative struggle with the network that did not just have creative outlandishness but appealing to the widest possible audience in mind ultimately led to the best of both worlds in many cases sophisticated language and absence of gore TNG’s and DS9’s syndication model was the ideal balance for creative freedom and sensible audience appeal Ooh…I only recently became a fan of Ms thanks to my recent addiction with the Ted Danson sitcom And since I never saw a single episode of DS9 (volunteer work hours back then made it very difficult) I only know her as Reg from the BECKER diner so look forward to seeing her in the future on other shows What’s stopping you from watching DS9 now up there with ds9 s1 and Voy s1 as decent openers for their series Still hoping for T’Pol to show up in Strange New Worlds There have been very few connections to DS9 in the new shows and not only would this finally tie in DS9 (I was hoping Section 31 would be about Bashir and Garak) but it would also give the discovery crew an invaluable source of experience for all the centuries they skipped Yesterday we reported that shooting started for the Star Trek: Short Treks episode featuring the return of Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd We learned that Rick and Morty writer/producer Mike McMahan had penned the mini-episode Wilson’s tweet also included the message: “Guess who’s back! I’ll tell you.) #HarryMudd.”  Cryptically the actor and Short Treks director also added “Big announcement on Thursday from @StarTrekCBS!” — RainnWilson (@rainnwilson) September 16, 2018 TrekMovie is trying to confirm the actors playing those two Orions; the actress looks a lot like Janet Varney (You’re The Worst so it isn’t clear what Wilson is referring to when he says there is a “Big announcement” coming this week from CBS It is also possible that CBS has something more up its sleeve. We know that they are developing more Star Trek content for All Access, and just last month CBS TV Studios president David Stapf said: “My goal is that there should be a Star Trek something on all the time on All Access.” In that same interview it was confirmed that CBS is looking at Discovery characters for potential spin-offs when asked if they are considering a Mudd spin-off CBS EVP for Original Content Julie McNamara said “He definitely falls in that category of it could be interesting to build around this character it hasn’t progressed any further than that.” Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd in Star Trek: Discovery Keep checking TrekMovie later this week for the newest information. And keep up with all upcoming Star Trek TV shows here at TrekMovie.com Its touching that you would think im bothered by this I just wondered what was the point of wasting your time reading an article about something you dont care about My god what is this “waste time reading an article” blah blah? Like seriously why does every commenter on this site feel the need to pounce on others for expressing their opinions I am not at all interested in this Harry Mudd idea So like why you gotta get all up in people’s faces about stuff for literally no reason Use some logic man: this kind of baiting makes no sense I hope they’re not thinking this character is the ticket to explore the working class aspect of century 23 life A FIREFLY approach for TREK is something I’ve been an advocate for since TSFS came out (I wanted them to stay renegade) I thought you could have done a show with Dukat when he took over that BoP with his crew made up of interesting 24thcen misfits so much being contingent on the talents of the people involved I had always regarded “Saul Goodman” as the most cartoonish character on BREAKING BAD and was thus pretty lukewarm towards the idea of of building an entire series around him I’m not crazy so far about DSC’s take on Mudd and I like the idea that they went outside the fold to find an ideal writer for the short at first wasn’t I interested in it at all you could even argue that it’s better than BREAKING BAD less reliant on shocking plot twists.) In any case I’d definitely like a civilian Star Trek show The closest I’ve found to what you’re talking about is the fanfilm series Star Trek: Aurora http://auroratrek.com Like an Agents of Shield-type analogue for the Trek universe he is a perfectly reasonable character…for a couple of episodes That smacks entirely of killing the goose that lays the golden eggs A Harry Mudd series would be an insanely great and fun idea What a great way to explore the Trek universe outside the lens of starfleet and Rainn Wilson certainly has the chops to do it but I really hope they go into a different direction than a Mudd series and the new version was a mild improvement at best I’d be fine with a Mudd one-off mini series but nothing more I groaned when I first heard Mudd was being featured on Disco but ended up being pleased with the performance and eps Since the Mudd episode was written by McMahon from “Rick and Morty.” And that female Orion does look like Janet Varney No time would be better for an animated Mudd show than this day and age Look how much Mudd and Trump have in common Both are loveable rouges who take what they want and let others pay for it They have the same attitude towards women and leadership As someone who DIDN’T want to see Mudd appear on this show (mostly because I hated the original character) and really opposed it People seem to think I’m stubborn about some of this stuff A character I was sure I was going to hate I ended up loving And I would be open to him showing up once or twice a season now kind of like Q did and put the DIS crew through the ringer And I’m looking forward to his Short Trek But I do have to agree with others I don’t think I want a full time show or anything Some characters just work better in small doses And I really want Star Trek shows to be about Star Trek exploring strange new worlds and all of that When you start doing side characters with people like Khan and Mudd it loses what the message of the show is really about Again it comes back to why I think Solo bombed People can love certain characters but not when it draws away from the core of the franchise That said if they announced him in a show I would certainly give it a chance And I would watch that over a Khan show any day But Trek should be thinking forward again like they are with Picard show but just my opinion I actually do not have a problem with multiple Trek shows that show different facets of the Trek universe And a 1/2 hour comedy could indeed work if done right But these things would take greater creative minds than it currently seems CBS is capable of gathering I have said in the past I’m open to other ideas as well It doesn’t have to be Starfleet per se but these ideas just feel like they are trying to capitalize on fan service instead of doing something original and unique with the franchise DS9 was doing something different for the sake of being different We don’t know Mudd is coming but if he is it would just feel like more nostalgia then it will be worth it if it does happen A Mudd series would be the first Trek series I’d refuse to watch Love Rainn Wilson and his portrayal of Mudd While I’m glad to see the Orions (and other classic species) on Discovery it seems the producers have thrown out (or ignored) the intriguing canon species-lore established in Enterprise – namely that the females are hyper-female beings (pheromones testosterone ridden hyper-hyper male beings Enterprise established (and TOS) established that it was was the females that were “enslaved” (seemingly but not really – as they were actually in control) See the Enterprise episodes “Bound” and “Borderland” Discovery seems to want to show that it’s both genders that are slaves Sometimes you just gotta make aliens “alien” and an anathema to our own believes I didn’t take the Orions in the season finale as being slaves And did they say all males were super muscular in Enterprise or did they just happen to encounter those types in the two episodes they showed Orion males Why weren’t they wearing leather pants The thing about Orion women in TOS is that they were a kind of white washed Asian or Eastern eroticism Perhaps you could do an Orion episode about a POTUS like figure I do like this version of Mudd as he is pretty much psycho and bipolar Do you really think in this day and age they would show female members of a species as hyper sexual beings and men as extremely buff We are living in an age where people are offended from the simplest of things Personally I think we should just leave labeling people and try to respect the way everyone wants to live their lives Of course I am in tune with modern societal mores what I believe (or we believe as 21st century humans) and how an ALIEN species behaves are two totally different things Why NOT have aliens that are actually sexist or just accept ingrained gender differences If every alien species is just retroactively altered to reflect OUR norms there are cultures that don’t share the western view concerning gender so it’s not a big stretch to think that a society that evolved entirely differently could be this way bees or spiders would certainly have sexual dimorphism (the way females are often larger and very different than males) and to NOT write this in because of a fear of offending audiences seems rather weak I was just trying to say how absurd it is now to bend certain things into agendas and to approach everything from a single point of view Its just so absurd to get offended at the tiniest of instances As for all the negative posts…why does it matter No one has actually said anything about a Mudd series and even if it does get made…which I one hundred percent support by the way…there’s gonna be other material out there…we’re getting Jean-Luc back for Kahless’ sake! There’s plenty of potential for awesome stuff on the way and even if it ends up sucking there’s no reason to get our panties in a bunch this early on it still feels like a wasted one or simply one for more fan service Star Wars is going to have tons of new material by the time Disney is done and yet people still rolled their eyes at Solo and more prequels It doesn’t mean everyone of course and I’m sure many loves it but to some it still feel like the franchise is just rolling in nostalgia instead of something unique of its own And I admit I’m SUPER excited for Picard so it’s not like I’m immune to it either I think Mudd just feels like they are doing it because it’s just another known name to market than anything But you’re completely right no one said one is coming BUT they have said when the Picard show announcement came there are ideas to spin off a character from DIS And I think its too early in the game it would be a main cast member since they are all completely new It may not be anything than an announcement of when the Short Trek date is revealed Many of the same people who rolled their eyes at SOLO ended up liking ROGUE ONE so I don’t think the issue was that it was a prequel per se but that they just didn’t like the subject matter particularly as it required that a central character in the STAR WARS universe be recast I get it that it’s important to you that the Trek franchise “looks forward,” but many of your fellow fans don’t have a problem with prequels so long as the show and stories are good For the record I was against Solo and RO and ended up liking them both Didn’t love either one but RO was good and Solo was OK Both felt like they were made for fan service but RO did feel like a grittier SW movie and why I enjoyed it And yes I think many like prequels but in Star Trek’s case a lot of people are just tired we had them for 15 years now and why some of us are frustrated But now that the Picard show is coming I’m not as bothered by another prequel but I still want something original at least Mudd doesn’t scream that at all and I think why the idea is pretty divided here And you’re right if it’s good then it doesn’t matter all that much But as I said if they did it I would give it a chance like I give all Trek shows a chance I will give you that Discovery was indeed an original idea What we heard of it before it went into production sounded pretty positive (Apart from Burnham being Spock’s adoptive sister which while plausible just sounded like an excuse to bring in Sarek Amanda and Spock later) With so little originality out there it’s unfortunate the final result was what it was I like originality but I guess I like something good better Yeah just being original doesn’t mean it will be great obviously I think with DIS though it’s premise is fine it just needs to be executed better with stronger writing But I think because we didn’t know the characters was the issue obviously but it is just easier to market something when you already know and love the characters Both the Kelvin films and the Picard show seem to prove that and probably why any new show announcement coming will probably have another known character even if it’s not Mudd for what CBS was trying to do it was probably better if they used known characters I’d rather see new ones but given the short seasons and CBS’ need to attract subscribers the easiest and quickest way was to mine what was already there Exactly what a Mudd series would want you to do I guess that means they’re off to a good start Wilson was awesome in the role and this could be a really fun and unique view of the Star Trek universe Come on CBS – show the naysayers you can pull this off “one a month” I thought it was one a week in December to tide us over till january Or are they airing once a month starting in December and airing while Discovery is on More like one a month starting this month until Discovery is on Mudd is fun but ultimately a dumb choice for a spin off So much for Star Trek trying to elevate the human spirit I have no doubt that Mudd as a character lends himself pretty well to the “Short Treks” concept but that picture gives me ENT-flashbacks: “Shove in more Orions His were among the best episodes from series one so this is good news I would actually love a show about what it’s like to not be Starfleet in Star Trek This could answer a lot of questions about how the the “better off,” people in the 23rd century lived as several mentions of currency were made in TOS it’s that Discovery’s Mudd is quite different than the original and while I’m not a huge fan of the original I respect that fans don’t want a character completely changed for the sake of drama So here’s hoping a Mudd spinoff would be more about subverting Starfleet in order to make a buck while he changes from violently hostile to a more light-hearted but devious protagonist What stilly thing to ignore… oh well If you cast someone way too old to play Mudd then at least also cast someone way too old to play Stella The actors of current Mudd and Stella have an age gap of 24 years and both look their age It looked more like a daughter kissing her father I totally didn’t get what this young pretty woman saw in this old poor average looking guy The actors who played the original Mudd and Stella were only three years apart and the actress was actually the older of the two Maybe she’s just attracted to his personality…for some reason it’d probably be better than Discovery but here’s a better idea – Rainn Wilson in a Roger C but I really really like how Trek news is now flowing at a steady rate and that there are so many tidbits to learn This is possibly the most exciting time to be a Trek fan since the lead-up to TNG Seems like in 2020 Trek fans will be the most catered-to geek fandom on the planet Thank god I got my NYCC ticket for Saturday Too bad I paid three times the original price for it lol dunno why I forgot to pick it up back in June. there is news on new Star Trek headed to CBS All Access with the first season of the first animated comedy from the franchise Today CBS announced Star Trek: Lower Decks will arrive on CBS All Access on Thursday new episodes of the 10-episode first season of the half-hour animated comedy will arrive each Thursday CBS also released a teaser art poster today giving fans the first look at the USS Cerritos The poster features the new tagline for the show: “Rarely going where no one has gone before,” which is a riff on the premise of the show set on a ship that specializes in “second contacts.” You may notice that the digital teaser image is styled to look like one of those fold-out posters you would get from magazines And CBS has provided an updated summary of the show: Developed by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan (“Rick and Morty,” “Solar Opposites”) STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships and Tendi have to keep up with their duties and their social lives often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies Pictured (l-r): Eugene Cordero as Ensign Rutherford The Starfleet crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S includes “Ensign Beckett Mariner,” voiced by Tawny Newsome “Ensign Brad Boimler,” voiced by Jack Quaid “Ensign Tendi,” voiced by Noël Wells and “Ensign Rutherford,” voiced by Eugene Cordero The Starfleet characters that comprise the ship’s bridge crew include “Captain Carol Freeman,” voiced by Dawnn Lewis “Commander Jack Ransom,” voiced by Jerry O’Connell “Lieutenant Shaxs,” voiced by Fred Tatasciore and “Doctor T’Ana,” voiced by Gillian Vigman Pictured (l-r): Tawny Newsome as Ensign Mariner Last week it was announced that Lower Decks will air on CTV Sci-Fi in Canada as well as be available for streaming on Crave Both are also home of Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery Today Bell Media announced Lower Decks will premiere in Canada the same day as it arrives on CBS All Access in the USA Lower Decks will air on CTV Sci-Fi on Thursday It will also be available to stream on Crave on Thursday International distribution outside of the USA and Canada for Lower Decks has not yet been announced CBS also released a brief animated version of the announcement on Twitter — Star Trek on Paramount+ (@StarTrekOnPPlus) July 1, 2020 Keep up on all the Star Trek: Lower Decks news here at TrekMovie.com. You can make a low ship and still make it ok to the eye Then why not make it the typical Excelsior or Miranda class that are ubiquitous in that era it looks a lot like a Miranda-esque ship but with a TNG aesthetic Probably filling a similar mission profile I see a very large main deflector suspended between the nacelle – which would be needed if the ship is city-size massive Doesn’t look all that big a ship to me allowing for some additional decks for the bridge and windowless ones Arent you courious how they will play out or Do you want a custom tailored Star trek Show It like saying: damn why is breaking Bad Not a family friendly Show about magic elves in sportcars. but we know that it is a mid-sized second contact ship that needs to be in place in orbit long enough to do heavy lifting of establishing long-term relations without looking threatening It’s not there to intimidate or promote Federation exceptionalism If one looks at it as a sort of mash-up of an oversized TNG-era science ship “mid-sized second contact ship”… sounds like the Orville I meant to say city-sized based on the promotional materials My autocorrect is in hyperagressive mode it seems I found the Galaxy class ships to be the ugliest I’ve ever seen in the Trek universe Why don’t they consult with actual naval architects the thing to do is to lean into the flaws of the design All sorts of jokes can be made out of how impractical it is is there any word from Starfleet on my request for a neck “It doesn’t arrive until Tuesday.” Because its Star trek and Not a navy Show… And… the Comic Book Guy-type hate posts begin Can’t we just enjoy Star Trek without constantly being slapped around with minutiae Plot twist: the ship is actually upside down The gravity plates were accidentally installed on the ceiling They simply reversed the ship to correct it That truly looks like one of the least important ships in Starfleet Those fake fold lines really gave me a double-take tear a hole in the poster and shine a line from the back Lower Decks is already my favorite Trek show to be honest with you Bryant Wonder if they have to beam down to that secondary hull/engineering section People have been commenting on the Enterprise’s main pylon being a vulnerable spot because it’s too thin but what about those nacelle supports… Way too flimsy This is a cartoon and maybe those points are actually part of the intended design No Starfleet ship could actually really exist in the real universe Sublight flight stresses even in the vacuum of space would tear these ships apart… Don’t they use forcefields and stuff to increase structural integrity Usually thrown out when the ship was being stressed these structural integrity fields are still force fields or a hole in the hull that just got blown into space They aren’t going to magically increase the strength of materials If their constant operation is required to keep the finest ship in the fleet from falling apart how many times did we see starships lose all power How did they even build this ship if there weren’t force fields everywhere holding it together Instead of atmospheric forces that would rip a compromised plane apart (assuming for the moment that starships don’t enter the atmosphere – damn it you have to have structure that can resist massive amounts of thrust to push a massive starship at close to light speed Newton still has a say in all this…. Our kids love Voyager for the technobabble It’s better understood as the entry window for bright preteen and other geeky potential fans (as I my spouse and many of our peers once were) At least the technobabble feels like the process of science and engineering most of the time whether or not it’s actually scientifically viable We’ll take that over cheerleading “It’s the power of math people!” or “I like science” any day as long as everyone understands it’s bulls**t It’s a better stress release then beating a dog… His pattern indicates 2 dimensional thinking.” I wonder what the point is of having it connected like that It almost looks like the ship should just start doing flips whenever the engines turn on If you need an explaination for everything positively need to be on the lowest deck of the ship…. together with that ‘plate’ on the underside of the saucer it kinda looks like the ship could be used as a tender and attach a large (semi-cylindrical) module for different missions between saucer and nacelles I figure the pylons are still big enough for turbolift shafts and stairs Turbolifts and Jeffries tubes would just be suspended in the space frame linking with mechanical and habitable-modules I’m just wondering about the multi-star arced windows on the saucer I’m so ready for some more new Star Trek I’ve been holding my breath for Discovery but I’ll definitely take Lower Desks We don’t know when season 3 should premiere but with Lower Decks covering off the summer/Q3 my guess is that Discovery will run no earlier than late September in order to impact Q4 the Guild sheets in Toronto are continuing to show preproduction for Discovery season 4 starting in July on their “Rumoured” listings it sounds like S4 writing may be underway even if postproduction for S3 is ticking along the article on the official site has the following to say about other Trek productions: “Star Trek: Lower Decks is the first animated series to join the expanding Star Trek franchise on CBS All Access which includes hit original series Star Trek: Picard; Star Trek: Discovery returning with season three later this year; the recently announced U.S.S Enterprise set series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck; and the development of a Section 31-based series with Michelle Yeoh A CG-animated Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences is also in the works for Nickelodeon.” Note that S31 is again confirmed as in development and Discovery S3 is still “later this year.” So they still haven’t given up on S31 But I guess you can say that about every show now I figured that they pushed Section 31 back and prioritized SNW since that one is easier to get into production once they’re allowed to film SNW already has the most important set built (the bridge) and has a lot of the main casting done (Pike Spock and the few actors that had lines on the bridge plus Sidhu from the Short Treks) They can also do more location shooting if the show truly is episodic and more exploratory It would definitely make sense given all the fanfare for it I’m just surprised S31 is still coming because they been soooo quiet about that show considering they kept saying it was going to start production after DIS had wrapped But as said our new reality has probably changed a lot of things I assume there are still a lot of pluses to them in making S31: headlined by an international star first Trek show headlined by an Asian actor to help (potentially) expand global audience and (potentially) a different style of Star Trek show (maybe not season long arcs and more of a procedural/spy show) Plus it seems like they really enjoyed working with Michelle Yeoh and are happy to create a star vehicle for her They can still do all of that with just a different show though Everyone seems to like Yeoh in general but the Space Hitler character just seem like the wrong approach to lead a Star Trek show IMO We have S3 of Discovery to hopefully see some evolution of her character Everyone needs to ask why CBS All Access feels the need to have a show that glorifies someone who committed genocide We’re not supposed to be cool with the genocide Worst character in Trek’s history; Yeoh deserved much better The thing about the S31 show is they can’t really give any details without spoiling things about Discovery’s third season Emperor Giorgiou went to the future with the rest of the crew so even revealing the period S31 is set in would let us infer things about Discovery I’m not really talking about story info I just mean WHEN will they start shooting it? Have they hired other actors to be on the show It’s weird how much lack of information there is CONSIDERING it was literally the first announced spin off and officially announced in early 2019 But because Georgiou is still on DIS it hasn’t been pushed through like PIC and LD has obviously But I agree I imagine story details are very vague because they will probably be based on whatever happens in season 3 I’m becoming more and more convinced that Gergiou doesn’t actually leave the 32nd century but stays in that era and rebuild S31 there Not to mention that people actually want to see the Pike show Section 31 was all about marketing in China And that may be a negative for CBS after Covid-19 not to mention all the negative publicity that companies like Google have weathered after attempting to appease the CCP “Section 31 was all about marketing in China I don’t know why some keep saying that Just because the show had an East Asian lead Does that mean that Crazy Rich Asians was marketed for the Chinese market She was born in Malaysia and made films in Hong Kong at the end of the article on the official site Lower Decks is “distributed worldwide by ViacomCBS Global Distribution Group.” or if there is a possibility that it will run on a number of different platforms CTV Sci-fi channel has tweeted out the link to the Star Trek Official Site confirming that it will run Thursdays starting August 6th in Canada I read this as: CBS hasn’t found/settled on international distribution partners yet they would mention a specific network or streaming service Or it’s indeed different platforms in each market What’s with the 1 million ads TrekMovie It’s a glitch associated with the new mobile environment It seems that it’s being harder to resolve than TM had hoped Hopping directly to the comments by hitting the “# comments” link at the top of the thread is a good way to avoid the ads in the meantime But shortly after i said it was being fixed we reverted back just a fixed size ad widget above the comments At this point I’m more bothered by the lack of color coded new posts It takes forever to scroll though the threads without easily being able to spot the new posts… I’ve been kind of hoping that the lack of colour markers for new posts is another unintended glitch As I recall the color coding of new posts hasn’t worked properly in some other browsers for a while now I’m not seeing them on Chrome on my mobile Matt I’m on Chrome literally 100% of the time on my devices I did see the highlight on Safari on my iPhone So much so that I’d rather slowly peruse the date and time of posts before using the mobile version But perhaps I should switch from Firefox to Chrome just to see if it works… I have had the opportunity to use Chrome for a short while now New posts showed up in an already viewed article and the shading did not appear Is this something that is gone for good now I see green headings and “response to [name]” in blue Many readers are going thru this festival of endless ads I was half sleep the first time I was scrolling down the million ads It looks like only certain people are still seeing lots of ads It’s been normal for me for a week now So it probably depend on the browser or device you are on I only get that now if there are zero comments posted already Looks like I now know when to re-up to CBSAA (that way I don’t need to pay for a needless third month) Hamilton is coming out Friday on Disney+ and that’s about it Disney+ is great if you are a Star Wars fan or if you love Marvel movies Don’t need to see a Disney movie ever again Now when are we getting Discovery season 3 I had Disney+ last December only to watch The Mandalorian during my free week They do have a some things coming that I wouldn’t mind seeing but nothing that I would pay their fee for And that includes their filming of the stage play “Hamilton” There just isn’t that much content to hold subscribers unless they have kids and even then the age ranges are narrower than one would think and our kids are coming to the end of watching the content even as repeats Disney+ just doesn’t have much more to add to hold youth and adult viewers over the long haul CBSAA with the Paramount library is kind a flip of Disney but not a lot of mass market content for kids All the more so with BET and their other cable channel content Adding in Nickelodeon content as well as the Wildbrain/dhx library of kids content (which is huge globally on YouTube) into a restructured ViacomCBS streamer seems really smart ViacomCBS still has the potential to come out ahead Personally I’m enjoying the heck out of Disney + if only for rewatching Mandalorian and the many documentaries So far if I was to not pay for a Trek show it would be S3 of Discovery as they have not yet earned it In the end I’m such a fan that I will go ahead and pay to see S3 hoping it will get better but expecting it won’t Lower Decks is something I am actually looking forward to and want to see really funny for Trek and non-Trek fans alike given the track record of these showrunners so far When I think realistically I’m forced to agree The track record for Secret Hideout Trek is not very good to say the least So I need to think unrealistically when it comes to Lower Decks I feel like Star Trek: Lower Decks will be my favorite Trek show Looking good for one of Starfleet’s least important ships am I right but I still wonder how long a show can go as Star Trek comedy before the well runs dry An hour of a TOS episode like “Trouble with Tribbles” or a DS9 episode like “Little Green Men” is fine At that rate it will be a while before the well runs dry… That’s a lot of jokey Trek to come up with I’ve noticed that most streaming shows get a two season order up front But I hope they are able to keep it fresh The last season of Rick & Morty only had a couple of good ones in their set of 10 8-13 episodes is the standard season for those platforms And now even networks seem to have more and more shows around 13 episode seasons The few shows I watched on networks this year were all around 12 episodes FOX has started shorter seasons for most of their shows a short while ago But the other networks still with few exceptions have the more standard seasons but I hope will bring some laughter to these benighted days Will the content of “Lower Decks” be considered canon “Lower Decks” is considered canon if you like it or not The press release very clearly said the show was “consistent with” canon you notice subtle hedging language like this TBTP are being very careful to say that if sitcommy Trek isn’t your cup of tea Just “consistent with canon.” It will not be canon I still have no idea why it’s even an issue Shouldn’t all the shows and movies just be canon It’s an issue because some people don’t like animation and/or regard anything animated as automatically inferior to live-action they can simply just not watch the show then I just don’t get the argument so if it ISN’T canon does that mean the people who hate it for being animated will suddenly like it more? Either way they are going to be unhappy about it People can cite GR claiming retroactively that TAS wasn’t canon and use that to not count this but I don’t think CBS will go that route Didn’t Roddenberry basically say he didn’t consider TUC canon either And hasn’t worked on Star Trek literally since the 80’s From what I understand GR didn’t like any of the Bennett produced features mainly because he had zero say in anything whatsoever to do with them He was given the Consulting Producer (if I recall the title correctly) credit only out of respect I think it is partly why he decided to create TNG I know he had nothing to do with films much past TMP And another reason why I don’t really care about his opinion on what he considered ‘canon’ or not That’s CBS job to actually determine it who knows about his thoughts of any of the shows past TNG since he’s And if he was willing to wipe canon from some of the best films in the franchise because he didn’t make them that says it all for me and why no one should care what he thinks on any of it All that matters is how you care about it; period But I’m sure he would’ve praised Nemesis though I’ll just agree that trying to please GR is a fools errand No one involved in Trek today should be trying to make something they think Gene would approve of Perhaps one of the reasons why Secret Hideout has been so weak with Trek could be because they seriously are thinking about what Gene would want He died something like 36 hours after seeing it once doubt there was much time or inclination at that point to go nuclear with a condemnation that could impact his piece of the action though — after it had made its money Personally I honestly don’t care if it is canon or not As they said recently on the Trek This Out podcast … “Canon I thought it was Discovery starting in September Will restart my CBS subscription for the premiere Well I guess this will be coming out before Discovery after all But glad SOMETHING is coming out sooner than later When it said August I thought we were still in for a wait until I realized it’s already July 1st lol So I imagine we are going to get tons of stuff about it all this month It’s still bizarre we haven’t gotten a trailer for it since it premieres in a month but I guess that’s coming soon now But its exciting to get both another new Trek show and post-Nemesis one They can do so many possibilities with this show Can’t wait to see what old TNG era characters will eventually pop up I’d be fine without any known character cameos but I think we all know they won’t be able to resist the opportunity The creator confirmed months ago we will definitely see cameos they are just keeping quiet on who it will be this sounds like this is going to be a huge fan boy type of show with tons of Star Trek/TNG easter eggs and fun references The only bad part of “Ephraim and Dot,” the animated short They looked like something from a very early RPG The 2380 date is somewhat interesting in that it is a year after Nemesis and just before or right at the beginning of the Romulan evacuation I thought the Romulan evacuation didn’t happen until 8-9 years after Nemesis But I can’t keep up with all these dates lol But I’m just happy Voyager will already be back in the Alpha quadrant by then at least so we can possibly see some of those characters too The actual supernova is 8 years after Nemesis but the evacuation began a few years before that I even brought and read the Countdown comics before the show started and I still forgot lol I’ve decided not to get too hung up on that sort of thing Also this looks so much like R&M and Solar Opposites in its animation style I just prayyy it’s actually funny and that it isn’t an “alternate universe” of Rick and Morty should have been a like-shaped imperial star destroyer I’ve been thinking of it as the USS *brand name* for months but can’t help comparing it to a USS Monster Munch Or named after the no-win Kelpians — the Kobayashi Saru I can’t help but think of Cerritos as the part of LA where the car dealers are located My mother got her last car from that area two years ago If Cerritos is the car dealership capital of LA county then the USS Cerritos really needs to have a sister ship called the USS Mississauga and adjacent to the Toronto Pearson Airport It’s often just lumped in with the Greater Toronto area (GTA) but it’s a decidedly separate and independent city Mississauga also has such a high concentration of car dealerships that a few years ago the city planners warned that it was running out of space for new car dealerships (As if 121 wasn’t enough…) The planners admonished car dealerships that they couldn’t use light industrial zoned land (i.e the kind CBS Studios is on) for selling cars Let’s appreciate that the car dealers didn’t take being labeled as retail well The design is neat and fits into to the TNG time period The USS Cerritos is not meant to be the Federation flagship but for a support ship this design fits well along side the Nebula and Steamrunner class starships “Rarely Going Where No One has Gone Before” The irony is you could’ve used that same tag line about Discovery in pretty much all of season one until they got to the MU They expanded out a little more in season 2 but only a little Which is pretty ridiculous considering they have a spore drive that can get them to the Delta quadrant and back in two minutes But it looks like season 3 is going to make up for that “Rarely Going Where No One has Gone Before” CBS All Access would do very well to remember that when folks start to parody your golden goose franchise Remember what the AUSTIN POWERS films almost did to the Bond franchise It’s even worse when the franchise begins to parody itself Anyone remember Joel Schumacher and Batman Or indeed even DIE ANOTHER DAY (replete with invisible cars) and Bond and the only way to resurrect it was with an intense This is exactly what CBS All Access is risking with LOWER DECKS This is very poor corporate strategy on CBS’ part I’m not holding my breath on it being funny SPACE FORCE is rip-roaringly funny with subtle acting There is no way Star Trek is going to become SPACE FORCE or even FUTURAMA Very few Trek comedic episodes stand the test of time The much-ballyhooed STAR TREK IV has not aged well Comedy is not Star Trek’s strength and never has been There have been countless parodies of Star Trek over the decades and yet “serious” Trek has survived I’m not as cynical about it because there are still other more serious Trek shows on to keep that balance I remember when The Clone Wars were starting and many Star Wars fans didn’t see the point of adding a cartoon and at the time many thought it would kiddify Star Wars too much (although there were other cartoons in the past) But in fact it did the opposite and made people appreciate the franchise and even the prequels more It oddly placed the franchise on a deeper level not many saw coming until it happened its different because TCW was/is a serious show just made for kids (and its amazing for a ‘kids’ show how many people are killed in it lol LD is a broad comedy so it won’t be the same thing but I don’t think it’s going to devolve the entire franchise either but I never looked at the Bond films any differently But I know people don’t like the idea of a animated Trek comedy but if its GOOD then I don’t think it will be an issue I think most fans can just view it as its own thing even if its part of the bigger universe This is probably the first Trek show we know very little about before going in so its just hard to say It would be nice if we got a trailer with this announcement The entire build up to it has been very odd compared to the other shows but I guess you can blame that on the virus Anyway I think no matter what some people are not going to like this show because of what you said But if its a SMART parody that makes you appreciate Star Trek while making you laugh then I think many will love it I’m still excited about it but prepared to be disappointed too I’m guessing they will put together a trailer but given there are only 10 episodes I really don’t want to see a trailer where they pack in the best jokes of the season Trailers for comedy are really hard to nail That’s why GALAXY QUEST is the best Trek movie I’ve seen that film recently (3rd time) and I still think it to be monumentally overrated There is still only one laugh in the entire film Pretty bad when you are actively TRYING to get people to laugh and it sounds to me like you’re confusing it with SPACEBALLS which I recalled as having exactly two laughs But I think what makes it work so well (for me anyway) is that it is a largely gentle comedy buttressed by character The seriousness of the situation balances some of the laughs enough so that you can actually create suspense and worry while folks have a good time That makes it a perfect little unit of entertainment for me like the excellent near-perfect MIDNIGHT RUN or infinitely rewatchable MEN IN BLACK (there are lousy movies that fall under my perfect unit of entertainment notion but I’d be undercutting my own argument to include them here.) But I can understand as Spaceballs was stunningly bad By that point Brooks seemed to have lost his touch for sure Saw no character nuances and the jokes were non existent And that’s saying something because Weaver and Rickman have shown they are pretty darn good at comedy in the past So if THEY can’t save it then it most certainly is the script I sat through Men in Black the one time and that was more than enough for me And it wasn’t just a parody of Star Trek but of *William Shatner* (and the other TOS cast I remember what happened to the Bond movies after “Austin Powers,” yes Powers changed the direction of the Bond films They were afraid of doing stuff about Bond’s character and backstory for years because the third AP peed all over that And when they finally did that stuff in SPECTRE it was utterly laughable (and would have been even if Powers hadn’t gone there first.) why they didn’t just hire the writers of SPOOKS/MI5 to do this century’s Bond films There’s more spy smarts in any two hours of those than Craig’s whole sorry tenure But the makers have insisted on trying to make Bond relevant and semi-realworld so they are treading on a different kind of film while still throwing in semi-successful big set pieces they need really good writers who can tell the story succinctly which is definitely not happening with the Craig films which has its own separate problems (but is still the only rewatchable Bond for me made this century) all of these things are immensely padded messes that made previous bloated Bonds look like lean masterpieces (TB True but still Bond is a different category from MI-5 The current Bonds have tried to be more grounded But you can only ground Bond so much before it ceases to be Bond Bond is better off without a backstory anyway it is often as stupid as the dumbest Moore and Brosnan films just covered with a veneer of seriousness that doesn’t withstand my scrutiny I rank SKYFALL and CASINO down with VIEW TO A KILL and MOONRAKER and DIE ANOTHER DAY It amazes me that they could mis-use so much solid Fleming in the way they did And none of that is getting into the still-unbelievable casting of Craig who with that face should have counted himself lucky to get a job as the assistant to a Bond heavy or maybe a post-sharkbite Felix Leiter Brosnan: if they’d let him play it like he played TAILOR OF PANAMA Even though Cavill looks like a musclebound lunkhead now and would have offset the bad parts of the script by being age-appropriate for a rookie Bond which is really hard to swallow with Craig and makes the film character’s instability and pscyho-0brattiness even more ridiculous If you want to believe Moore saved the franchise he killed the Bond character in order to achieve that I’ve basically only seen real deal Bond in two films since Connery and those are the Daltons (there are a few moments in QUANTUM But I did not say Moore saved the franchise it was his first two outings that nearly killed the franchise TMWTGG was arguable the worst Bond ever and the box office reflected it They kept Moore as it was decided he wasn’t the problem You can hate it all you want (it’s not a favorite for me by any means but I don’t hate on it and there are a lot worse ones out there) but the numbers ensured the survival of the franchise Roger Moore’s Bond literally saved the franchise when they decided to go over the top with The Spy who Loved Me The previous two were disappointments and Brocolli decided to give it one more shot If it crashes and burns it won’t kill the franchise There has been bad Trek before and it didn’t kill it Animation might be the better way to go with it but I sorta would have liked to see a live action comedy However The Orville (for the first season at least) seems to fill that void it might have been a good idea to reach out to Seth M to get him to do one instead of Orville It’s more subtle than anything else There was one episode (I’ve only seen 8 so far) that had a good number of good laughs But most episodes just evoke smiles or small chuckles at best “Rip-roaringly” funny is certainly not the term I would use to describe it and Monty Python and the Holy Grail are at that level I will give you that comedy in the serious episodes is generally not done well TOS only tried perhaps twice and came away with only one winner And DS9 had a winner with their Tribble tribute episode But this show is designed to be comedy from the outset at least it looks like it fits into the Trek universe a bit Unlike some other ships from other shows that I will not name Not every ship in the fleet is the flagship This show may turn out to be our favorite because imagination has no price point We may see exactly what we hope to see – new and a greater variety of aliens expressing themselves in unusual ways And I still think Discovery will wait until all or most of our election drama is done no more Planet of the Hats or Heads of the Week Not sure why DSC would wait until the “election drama is done” since it’s all filmed and SFX and score are being worked on now If anything I will crave Trek more than ever during that time That is what I said when I first saw the E-D my good friend felt it looked so much like a hotel that it should be the USS Hilton I was thinking if they wanted to do this ship as a little funky you could just have a loose Bussard (nacelle cap) that jiggled a little whenever the ship slowed down or turned or stopped It is not the USS Enterprise but at least that ship has a personality I can’t wait to watch Star Trek: Lower Decks in August Now all I need to do is get my CBS subscription back I love that the poster is reminiscent of the first Star Trek: The Motion Picture poster and reading about this show I feel it has potential The studios should revamp it and make something better I’m going to honor it by watching the episode Lower Decks tonight Not seen it in years and oddly I didn’t watch it during all my TNG rewatches for Picard Also the importance of strength of character I’m still rooting for Taurik (or his twin Vorik from Voyager) to show up in Lower Decks or Picard “Still looks better than most of the Discovery and Picard ships.” Unfortunately that’s not too hard though Did everyone catch McMahan’s tweet TM posted: “STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS premieres Thursday, Aug 6th on @CBSAllAccess Here’s a list of @startrek episodes you should watch to prepare: ” Which episode should I watch?” “Yes.” And it weren’t for the millions of Trek fans who embraced and loved TNG Trek would not still be going as a franchise I guess that we need to know that bitter TOS “TNG is not real Trek” fans are still out there And for the Discovery and Picard fans who are stunned by the negativity of some long-time fans just keep this in mind when someone says that the resistance to new Trek was never so bad in the 90s I’m already in love with this ugly duckling of a ship 💐 glad someone is giving the Cerritos love here Scott Looks like someone took apart a Franz Joseph ship and reassembled it using TNG-era parts Let us all take back the awful things said about him Welcome to the family Lower Decks… I look forward to spending some time with you this summer… I hope the token white guy won’t be the butt of all jokes I wonder if Futurama came out today if it would catch this same crap but that seems rather fitting for this show as it looks to be another “comedy” that forgets about the importance of the comedic straight man All of the elements of this show look silly Someone pointed out the poster seems to be a homage to the TMP poster: https://imgur.com/kiGIq2L It’s easter eggs like this that makes fans smile I really hope we get tons of things like this in the actual show whoever said above that the Cerritos is upside down in the poster-picture has it right (The planet and ship are inverted from the TMP poster.) Why Does Star Trek never do a series about the enlisted of Starfleet O’Brien’s rank got very muddy over time and Worf’s adoptive father noted this when he transported onboard O’Brien had the function of a Chief Engineer More he was often referred to as an officer Star Trek has been ill-at-ease with the concept of enlisted crew vs officers throughout its history and many of the writers don’t have a good grasp of military ranks senior enlisted roles were devalued: red shirts were expendable who had an important NCO role on the bridge was presented as an eye-candy secretary instead of the senior enlisted responsible for correspondence with command and performance assessment of the ranks Only one of four in the entire fifty year history of the franchise I honestly did not recall them ever having a non officer aboard Then during my rewatch there was a crewman on “The Drumhead” who was hiding his Romulan ancestry It was the first time we saw one save for O’Brian He was referred to as “Chief” and I assumed it was his rank As far as I know the only Chiefs are Petty Officers Because O’Brian was made head of Operations on DS9 and on that show he spoke about attending the Academy I am forced to assume them calling him “Chief” was not official and perhaps a term of endearment of some sort His status I think technically is a mystery it’s a mystery – basically due to unresolved continuity errors There is no way to reconcile Worf’s adoptive father talking about “working for a living” with O’Brian if we was an Academy graduate and commissioned officer Worf says at some points that his adoptive father was an Federation officer who took him in after finding him the aftermath of the Khitomer attack One could read that as his adoptive father being an NCO of some kind but it’s all sloppily done and confused it seems that the writers are trying to clean this up by having the Command program be aimed at future “captains and chiefs” where chiefs are what 90s Trek referred generally to as “department heads.” O’Brian was always some kind of department head but not one that was part of the senior staff that met for wardroom meetings with the captain and all y’all how much I like the new comments format I can do italics without HTML coding and the comments are nested It’ll be hilarious when Kurtzman forces writers of Picard and Discovery to reference this ship and crew to validate it Episode one: Warp engines vaporize entire crew compliment in secondary hull first time engines are engaged The the secondary hull rips away nacelles aren’t designed as hull support IGN got an exclusive preview of the next Short Treks episode titled “Ask Not” (finally) starring Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike Star Trek: Short Treks – “Ask Not” is written by Kalinda Vazquez and directed by Sanji Senaka The short will be available on CBS All Access and on the CTV Sci-Fi Channel in Canada on Thursday When an attack on Starbase 28 leaves a surprise prisoner under Cadet Thira Sidhu’s (Amrit Kaur) watch she is faced with making a decision that may threaten her standing in Starfleet Star Trek: Short Treks are available in the USA on CBS All Access Season 2 is available in Canada via CTV Sci-Fi Channel (formerly known as Space) and Crave Availability for the second season in other regions has not be announced Keep up with all the Short Treks news and reviews at TrekMovie I would even consider paying for CBS an extra month if that is what it took to get that Pike show on the air rather than in January would be a good way to show your interest in a Pike series It’s what economists call ‘using your dollar votes’ you’d be demonstrating that a Pike show has value in its own right over and above that of Picard and Discovery If I KNEW such an action would lead to the creation of a Pike show I would restart my subscription a bit early But the fact is doing so would have no bearing on a Pike show For all I know they could take my subscription as evidence to keep making the Short Treks But if they went away tomorrow I wouldn’t be annoyed My dollar vote won’t count unless I use it specifically to subscribe when the Pike show appears Otherwise they may think I was paying to see the other 6 Twilight Zone episodes I did not see because I canceled Which I DEFINITELY do not want them to think If this were Amazon Prime rather than CBSAA you could be confident that the firm is tracking what you watch and how it links to subscriptions Amazon Prime is know to make decisions on greenlighting original series based on viewship of pilots CBSAA isn’t quite so transparent about it but I suspect they know that the Twilight Zone wasn’t able to hold you I don’t know if it’s on offer in the US but CBSAA has a 7 day trial offer here at the moment Signing up just to watch the Short Treks would send a message So are you saying that Amazon Prime just airs pilots only and then gets reactions who air their pilots to help decide if the show will get made And it is becoming more and more common to not even make pilot episodes anymore in the streaming and cable world Pretty sure CBS tracks what their subscribers watch They would see that this subscriber has only seen Discovery and TZ on their service All they would get from my subscription is that I pretty much paid only for Trek (as TZ did not keep me subscribed) And that the Short Treks were not enough to get me to subscribe ahead of STD S2 They will see that again when I begin my subscription again in January Only then will I see the new Short Treks and rest of the TZ (Although based on the 4 I’ve seen I have little hope the rest will get better) It is my understanding that the 1 week trial is only good for new subscribers I vaguely remember that Amazon used to release a bunch of pilots and then decided which of these would go to series (some of them never went beyond a pilot) you could even watch those pilots without an Amazon Prime account I’m wondering… Did they show a pilot for the announced upcoming Middle Earth set series I thought that was like other streaming shows in that it gets the OK based on concept and budget No the middle earth show is straight to series but they have used pilots to determine the viability of a number of series Typically they’d release a bunch of pilots and those that were watched would be given a series order and those that weren’t would be canned Off the top of my head I recall a Zombieland Pilot and a Chris Carter show that didn’t make the cut Successes of this scheme included shows like Man in the High Castle and Transparent What @TG47 is saying makes perfect commercial sense They’ve given us new Pike material but if nobody tunes in and makes them money then why bother making more The thing is @ML31 is that nobody can guarantee that if you stump up the cash for the Short Treks that it will guarantee you a Pike show but the more people that does increases the likelihood of it happening So I’m going to hope my single vote will be heard when they see that I did indeed stream the Shorties once I restart my subscription in January What I do want them to see is that I’m NOT willing to pay for their service for an entire month just for ONE 10+ minute short They are sitting on a frelling GOLD MINE of talent He is confronting a hostile force of some kind either a mentally ill or alien-possessed cadet I think it’s pretty obvious it’s some sort of training simulation and Pike is playing it up to the hilt to ‘rattle’ the Cadet and see how she really acts in adverse situations I’m wondering if Pike is an imposter I feel like 80% of the Enterprise crew is female She’s clearly not a member of the Enterprise crew Pike commands loyalty from those under his command To date we have seen 8 Enterprise crew on the bridge but you say that for you that feels like 80% Yes it’s true that Nhan came over from Enterprise but so did an ill fated male science officer We had an off-screen female engineering officer but we’ve seen male crew running the transporters it’s interesting how even handed and equitable representation can be perceived as exceptional You used facts to come up with an insightful take on how people perceive and misperceive things in our society It is an all too rare way of thinking these days- facts and critical thinking Which is why our politics so so screwed up But please note: equitable isn’t even-handed equitable is skewed in a different direction It’s basically just another word-skin for the misguided and long-past discredited concept of “positive discrimination” which ended up hurting more people than it helped we don’t know if the man-woman ratio on Enterprise is a result of current-day politics or a result of 23rd century recruiting process it might explain why there’s so many humans yet so few aliens from races we know to be superior to humans Humans at the Academy are getting bonus points in tests because they’re dumber and weaker than everybody else There are two reasons for more humans than aliens one can run to The first is the TV show production reason one can make up plausible in-universe reasons for it But having some walking around is enough to keep up the illusion of their world “Equitable” simply means “fair.” I am still puzzled why some fans find the presence of women and minorities in prominent roles “unfair.” Whites and males had the prominent presence in previous Trek shows; why not even out the ratios “When you’re accustomed to privilege “When you’re accustomed to failure I’d like to note Boze that the labour law definition of equitable varies by country this means that hiring reflects the distribution of groups in the labour market 50/50 male/female seems about right as long as women are equally distributed among Starfleet graduates whether or not we’ve seen equitable representation of other groups or nationalities is another question Regarding the Canadian situation you reference Such a policy sounds wrongly focused on outcome when the policy should be focused on opportunity Equality of of opportunity does not produce equality of outcome ML31 there are definitely initiatives to promote equality of opportunity once a group achieves equitable representation in an organization special priorities for equity groups may not apply I could go a little deeper with this but I don’t think I want to turn this thread into an analysis of societal behaviors I do not recall the gender of the E’s Chief Engineer being mentioned I haven’t seen any of the new short Treks and will not until I sign up again for CBSAA when Picard starts As far as I knew the E’s engineer was only mentioned by name in Disocvery’s season 2 And it sure didn’t sound Scottish to me The Engineer off-screen in Q & A was an engineer but not necessarily the Chief Engineer I took it that we had the watch head in engineering speaking but that doesn’t necessarily need to be the Chief Engineer this was clearly an earlier time when Ensign Spock first arrived on the Enterprise Amin was not a bridge officer at that time and was dressed in a operations/security/engineering red top Puts me in mind of a story that Roddenberry used to tell at his college lectures about the supposed male/female ratio on the Enterprise The production staff wanted it to be 50/50 claiming that figure would imply “There’s a lot of fooling around going on up there,” and that 1/3 female was the best they could do who was long-accustomed to choosing his battles even when they were ridiculous “That number of women can probably handle the ship That would be an awesome correction seeing as the TOS crew was for sure over 80% male …going to have to disagree with that There were plenty of females on the TOS Enterprise – especially considering that was a (white) male-dominated era on television But there was no way the TOS crew was 80% male Not remotely true–there were a LOT of women in the TOS crew Check out any scenes in the corridors–women are walking around all the time Check out my story above as to the why behind the disparity If you weren’t aware of the details there’s a silly little thing in western media called “representation” Every show/movie needs to acknowledge this bright idea somehow (because 2019) and for Trek And I’m a “minority” myself – so that’s saying a lot but where is the nuance and balance though It doesn’t take a rocketeer to read between the lines You folks are on to something here… Smile and wave boys When there’s limited representation then the person playing a character of an underrepresented identity shoulders a disproportionate burden of representing that identity That person no longer gets to be just a character Every trait is dissected as something that applies to everyone of that identity and stereotypes develop But when there are many examples of people from that identity on screen then there’s room for people to be just people Look I feel that if Pike and Spock were not well established characters in the canon I do like more female representation but not at the cost of males as I feel it is going against the ideals diversity of Star Trek I am tired of reboots where the male lead is changed into a female one why not give us new shows with female characters There’s nothing to say that Kirk has to be a man Well maybe because they have five other shows in production and so far only one has even been on the air Even if they announce a Pike show tomorrow it probably won’t land on TV until 2021 or even 2022 the earliest I think we can easily lose one of those 5 and push Pike to the top of the pile We need a Star Trek series that takes place on an Enterprise There are reports from Destination Star Trek that Shazad Latif responded that “It all depends on Michelle Yeoh.” while I have no patience for the either/or sibling rivalry thing between Pike and S31 that seems to crop up in discussions here it doesn’t seem as though Yeoh the lead for the S31 show has been fully sold on the pilot As CBS is already out there with a confirmation that S31 is in development I can understand that they aren’t interested in making and announcing anything about a Pike show until negotiations are concluded one way or the other on S31 It probably just means that Michelle has a busy schedule But even if they did cancel one show for Pike the soonest sound like it will still be in 2021 and that’s only if they could start filming by sometime next year It probably takes a good 18 months minimum to get these shows on the air from pre-production to editing The Section 31 show has been in production for nearly a year now and they already said that show won’t come out until 2021 because they won’t start shooting it until DIS third season is finished (I think they just mean filming it though it would be nice to see another show with Enterprise on the air as someone once said there are still plenty of letters in the alphabet Just hoping the powers that be somehow look at this site It’s a betrayal of the Star Trek vision An Enterprise-based Pike show with Anson Mount is what so many fans (yes not 100%) including this one even if you suits don’t understand Trek try to understand what many fans are saying I am looking forward to the Section 31 show I am certain that the creators are aware of the ethics of Trek and that the characters will fit to it The S31 concept must be very promising and strong for the creators the way they push it so it could be just great And yes I can’t wait for a Pike series as well I don’t understand why there can not be room for both in many peoples head We have creators that are talking to do BOTH asap so why are so many fans unhappy I used to be pro-S31 myself back in the 90s which was like the guys with blue gloves from Firefly I got a bunch of incompetent loons secretly manipulated by a non-sentient AI computer I’ve had enough S31 for the rest of my life It doesn’t really help that the recruitment process in Kurtzman’s S31 apparently goes like this: “Hey you seem to be a lovable psychopathic misfit like us wanna tag along and have a command position in our top secret cabal I’m sure you’ve heard about us already.” ;) That’s sort of my problem as well Boze I was pretty excited when I heard Section 31 was going to be on Discovery I too thought we were getting the Sloane type of agents from DS9 Instead we got what was basically just another intelligence agency I understand why they went the direction they did though because if they kept them to the versions of DS9 its no way most fans would accept it as a show that works AGAINST Starfleet but they are basically seen as the bad guys Giving them their own show was controversial enough you can’t do it where they are basically fighting Starfleet officers in the same vein they are the Klingons or Cardassians as well It would fundamentally go against Star Trek Still doing shady things (Note: see the entire season 2 of Discovery ;)) but now where they work directly with Starfleet even if they still try to keep some things away from it They are more like antagonists now and not straight villains And I imagine the reason why Georgiou is on the Discovery next season is to (try) and soften them up even more….as much as Georgiou can be I guess But it sadly destroyed my interest in a show But if it happens I’ll still give it a chance you are right – as a huge DS9’fan I would also be happy if the S31 show would be of the “Sloane’s S31” type At least Georgiou is a very manipulative character so I hope they use her in that regard and raised the concept of ends justifying the means Kurtzman’s S31 is as deep as Saved By The Bell In Space Didn’t Sloane get outsmarted by Bashir and O’brien That would have never happened on Philippa Georgiou watch You are of course free to feel that way Frank My thinking is that while I like out of the box thinking and new takes on things I don’t feel like if the Discovery powers that be find it promising then it therefore must be The fans have been arguing about Section 31 since it was first shown on DS9 The “Star Trek vision” changes from year to year It sounds like they were going to use it as a vehicle for further “syncing up with canon” which I consider a wasted effort after the results STD’s last season However a version of ST that places too much priority in listening to its fans is not something anyone should want and will never deliver anything truly surprising or refreshing like some of the finest Treks of the past The Section 31 show doesn’t sound like a betrayal of Star Trek is simply that it sounds boring (even moreso after watching S2 of Discovery) Surely the producers know that they have accidentally managed to capture lightning in a bottle I am honestly mystified why this isn’t being fast-tracked I’m somewhat mystified why this is not getting fast tracked myself This is the Trek project that seems to have the fan base really jonesing for If not the same level as Stewart’s new show then it’s really close I am deeply hoping they are indeed working on it but keeping all the details as hushed as possible At best we are going to build super do it all robots that take over but hey So let’s focus on a time when the Federation wasn’t stagnant wasn’t large and still was growing and exploring – Pike / Number One / Spock NCC-1701 I had concerns that Discovery portrayed the Federation / Starfleet as too big too fast where everyone can talk to each other (1000s of ships everywhere need help just pick up the phone) but let’s blame the Klingon War Federation short dilithium and needs to explore and recover – done And please let’s see a Connie take on a D-7 battlecrusier let’s have a one on one with some real strategy and some real stakes the NCC-1701 and such awesome TOS characters/actors and STILL no Connie on D-7 action… Because they are totally going to cancel a show that’s been announced Most people want Discovery and Picard and just as excited for them Let’s not be pulled down the rabbit hole by Cmd.Bremmon again We’ve done our best to convince them of the merit of different kinds of Trek for different audience niches but they sincerely believe that only a recreation of TOS is worth any investment There is a limit to how long I’m willing to engage with someone who has shown they are stuck in the ‘only my Trek is real/worthwhile Trek’ mindset then just watch TOS and stop moaning over everything else Star Trek has been more than TOS for over 30 years now especially when its now a much bigger part of Star Trek mythology and has millions of devoted fans to it I get some will basically always be loyal to that show only if they started watching Trek when that’s all it was they were born into a bigger world of Star Trek and consider TNG and others their favorites since that’s probably what brought them into the franchise This is why its good some Star Trek fans are not in charge of these shows It would’ve been the same thing for decades now I myself think Pike / Spock / Number One and that beautiful USS Enterprise model and bridge in the exciting golden age of exploration should be the way to go I am not exciting by Discovery and Picard going to the future where everything is stagnant where the best they can do is add some action with a stagnant boring Federation ripping itself apart and/or a race to replace themselves with nonsensical Super robots when not too bothered to leave Earth to rewrite the socialist collective Borg and poor good guys I was over Picard 10 years ago when the Borg was a real exciting threat so toss that Now I am apparently the only one who thinks so and I accept that but I would pay real money to see more of Pike / Number One / Spock on that beautiful 1701 bridge please!!!! but seeing the Big E on Discovery in her prime during a time of exploration was a real treat Cmd.Bremmon many of us would like to see the Pike show but it turned out better than anyone here expected Where most of us part ways with you is the either/or sibling rivalry thing It’s the ‘stop everything else and just do what I want’ commentary from you that is off-putting I recognize that Secret Hideout management is stretched they have their plates full with series that CBS has already announced even if the market could take a 4th live action show they aren’t able to move quickly to get it to commitments It does seem though that CBS is either going to greenlight or shelve the S31 show soon Discovery S3 will wrap production in February 2020 who are supposed to be the S31 showrunners have just been announced to be leading another non-Trek production Shazad Latif’s comments make it sound like negotiations with Michelle Yeoh are not concluded TPTB are not going to be able to focus on developing a Pike show until the S31 show decision is made Bremmon nearly EVERYONE here has said they would like a Pike show too Did you close your eyes before reading other posts I mean its practically stated on every board now No one is getting on your case about that and you know it But you seem to have a very narrow view of what Star Trek should be and suggesting they should cancel a show that is clearly something most fans are looking forward to and has truly excited the fanbase And you want to cancel Discovery because its not how you want it People use to get on my case because I had issues with its execution That comes off really selfish for all the people who are huge fans of it Maybe its just easier if you stop watching it especially since the point seems to have diverse content Believe it or not most people can watch all of it and be satisfied Just watch what you like and let others enjoy what they like Not everyone agrees with your viewpoint (and some of us just see it as a TV show and love different representations of the future) But Star Trek is something for everyone these days and its only getting bigger as it covers multiple centuries You realize that if we got rid of everything connected to Discovery Peck and Rojin-Stamos would probably be quick to sign on but Mount’s long-term availability to do a series is still in question availability is something a shuttle full of Federation credits flown to Anson’s front door would fix I would wager that is how they brought Stewart back Don’t see why it couldn’t work on Mount as well but for the love of Talos please not another show about the Enterprise they’re doing whatever they can to fast-track it it’s already been given a go and they just won’t announce until they have something of a team around it or it could be a series they want to announce after Picard and the next season of Discovery starts airing Part of me thinks not but one can still hope You are god and you determin what fans wants I don’t want another prequel either which is why I’m not too bothered if we get a Pile show or not THAT said though I’m a realist and I know at some point they are going to return to this era again So if they are might as well give people something they really want But my only fear is many expect it to be a TOS retread and that’s probably where dissapoiment may set in If people just want a Pike and Spock show that’s fine But if they think they are going to get TOS standalone type adventures I don’t see that happening It will probably still be done like DIS just aboard the Enterprise I think that type of story telling is over That is the only thing that gives me pause As great as the Enterprise characters were on Discovery and as much as I would LOVE to see a show devoted to them my chief concern is the show would mirror Discovery WAY too much Now I don’t particularly mind a season long arc Something we absolutely did NOT get with Discovery’s season arcs As compelling as Pike-led show may be to many I have serious reservations that TPTB could get together a writing crew that could do such an investment justice I’m really not too excited about the thought of another prequel I wonder if they might combine S31 with Pike so you have Pike having to deal with a secret powerful organization as Sisko had to on DS9 I imagine TPTB in Starfleet are looking for a fresh start for the organization Anson Mount does have certain stipulations [being close to home in SoCal for one] and his availability may be limited after he made such a big splash in DSC S2 I hope that CBSAA can lure him with whatever it takes and take care of all the other factors that go into a new show At least they have the sets for a turbolift To me that just sounds like the best outcome Marja if S31 really happens or Mount isn’t interested in a full-time show Combine the two and just have the Enterprise make appearances And that also give people who isn’t sure about a S31 show a reason to be interested and tune in I’m still of the opinion that a section 31 show would be far better off set in the Picard time frame For some reason I associate Section 31 with the stagnation of the TNG era I mean half the fun of Sisko was watching him break the rules to save the Federation despite itself (the Belisarius of Trek?) It just doesn’t fit in as well with the early Federation where the races were still diverse I suppose the Klingon War with a crippled Federation opens the door for that arc though (as I think it does set up TOS with a “rebuild”) now that they made Section 31 a lot different in the 23rd century (although we are still talking decades so they can try and change them back to some degree) Most people want the original way they were created and how they were done on DS9 DIS stripped a lot of things that made them cool in the first place And went SUPER crazy on the technology lol wouldn’t be cool if we found out that Kirk worked for S31 Leave the adventures of the Enterprise for the movies The next movie if it ever gets off the ground will be about the Enterprise crew Interesting how they added the line in Disco that the traditionally colored uniforms the Enterprise crews wears are new but everyone is wearing it in these episodes that mostly occur before the events of Enterprise The revamped TOS uniforms are way better than the bland DIS ones and its a shame they didn’t just go that way on day one I do wish when another show goes back to the 23rd century full time And its at least a good sign that will happen since both The Trouble with Edward and now this short has all the Starfleet officers in those uniforms and they weren’t just on the Enterprise either I love the different variations of them in TTWE I highly disagree on going with the TOS-esque look from Day 1 The DIS uniforms are a great continuation of the ENT look while the cut of them is approaching the new TOS look maybe if it was 10 years before The Cage I would agree with you But by this time they should ALREADY be transitioning between The Cage and TOS uniforms anyway And TOS uniforms a few years after The Cage is fine which is when we see Pike and Spock wearing them That band uniforms just really stick out of place to me in that period If the show was 10-20 years before the time they were set the uniforms would not be as big an issue why put the series around the time of the Cage and then not use cool stuff that should be around the time of the Cage… uniforms The phasers and communicators were there which everyone loved The worst though was having a Klingon War during a time when their should have been Constitution class cruisers and D-7 battle cruisers (i.e the DNA of Star Trek) and then seemingly forget about them until the next season where their absence is now a big WTF why didn’t you do that in the first place?!? Such things just gave me cause to wonder how much of Trek were the writers and show runners REALLY aware of And if they were and let this stuff get by then they must have thought the story was so very good that it overrode such trivialities Though what’s interesting is that the crew of the USS Cabot in “The Trouble with Edwards” actually had different uniforms than the Enterprise did The Cabot crew did not have the black collar part on their uniforms It might be because the Cabot was a research/science vessel I suspect that the ‘out of story’ answer is that Gersha Phillips and her costume team made a wide variety of prospective colourful uniforms before TPTB landed on the ones shown in S2 of Discovery I suspect that a decision was made to roll out the collarless version for the science ship so that their cost could be amortized on a show having a different uniform backs the canonical justification that the colourful black-collared uniforms were reserved for Constitution class ships As to why the captain got to retain her black-collared uniform there are precedents where real world serving military are permitted to continue to wear uniforms from conflict or prestigious postings for a certain time period after they are posted back Coming off a posting on a long range exploration mission on a Constitution class ship would seem to qualify This round of Short Treks look interesting So annoying that this hasn’t got a Rest of the world release yet Sounds as though Netflix is going in the other direction : passed on Picard It seems like Amazon Prime is taking on more of the Trek content It seems to align better with their brand it’s really interesting that more and more digital content is going that way It’s not just a CBS issue but the outcry with Disney not releasing their platform in other territories until sometime next year I live in the States but I feel for you guys Maybe it’s not the cadet who is alien-possessed Threatening cadets does not usually seem to be Pike’s style and he is using a kind of hypnotic tone So maybe Anson Mount gets to play an impersonation of Pike and real Pike will step in at the end to deliver the plaudits From the first scene it was painfully obvious where they were going with it Can we not try for diversity AND talent together She really stunk up the place with her substandard “acting” chops Because you say your problem is with the acting into a comment about “diversity” Implying that someone only got the job because of their race is also racist It assumes that there MUST have been some hypothetical superior white candidate who was passed over The fact that you do shows that you are bringing your own (racist) baggage to the conversation They obviously cast her for a particular reason and it certainly wasn’t for her acting ability Once you veer away from casting the best actors available Here’s a good example: Game of Thrones the one glaring error in the show is the casting of Kit Harington as Jon Snow Can’t act his way out of a paper bag THE NUMBER ONE FACTOR IN CASTING IS TALENT if you’re looking for a certain type then cast the best damn actor you can get (of that type) seeing what this actor has done on other shows (e.g and how Anson Mount’s speech & performance was rushed I’m convinced the issues were on the other side of the camera Contrast that with the measured pacing and focus on facial and body language in Q & A but it would’ve even better had they cast someone to play Lt Another “welcome to the Enterprise” story is ok with me Dog owners have been warned to take precautions over the festive period as eating mince pies choking on decorations and stealing Christmas snacks could cause fatalities Dog daycare company, Dog Tales Club, based in Clapham Road, Stockwell, are advising pet owners this Christmas on how to keep their dogs relaxed and safe so everyone enjoys the festivities Lauren Hill, manager of the Dog Tales Club said: “Foods to be careful of and are toxic to dogs include Mince Pies fruit cakes and stollen which all contain dried fruits and sometimes alcohol.” According to the pet insurance company Agria pets are 75 per cent more likely to be poisoned in December than any other month – and this is a trend that has increased over the past six years Ms Hill said: “The cocoa content of chocolate or chocolate cake is toxic to dogs and must never be given as a treat or snack as even the smallest amounts can sometimes prove fatal “Onions and leeks are also toxic to dogs and if in any part of your Christmas dinner it’s best to not give any titbits from the table.” we suggest that you introduce your dog to lots of visitors so they do not become stressed and anxious on Christmas Day itself “Introduce decorations into the house gradually and avoid using natural decorations such as real pine trees Holly and Mistletoe as these are toxic and harmful to dogs “Keep your dogs supervised around the Christmas tree as the decorations can be a choking hazard and you want to avoid your dogs chewing through the tree light wires “Try to keep the routine as normal as possible on Christmas Day by walking your dog and involving them in activities in a calm way “We recommend that you always provide a safe place for your dog where they can relax and retreat to when they want to take themselves away from the noise.” After some mysterious Klingon teasing on social media yesterday a new Star Trek game set in the Kelvin movie universe was announced today A new massive multiplayer real-time strategy and role-play mobile game titled Star Trek freemium mobile games including WWE Champions and Walking Dead: Road to Survival genre-defying game that embraces the heart of the franchise—exploration to allow players to experience an entire galaxy of quests and missions for endless adventure,” said Tim O’Brien Star Trek Fleet Command is now available for pre-registration on Google Play and will be available worldwide as a free download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Thursday the seeming use of the TNG-era Romulan Warbird in the Kelvin TOS era Hopefully there’s an in-game story behind that I could’ve sworn there were a couple of instances where there were smaller Romulan scout ships with single wings in TNG This Warbird reminds me a bit of the Romulan Warbird from Interplays Star Trek: New Worlds game from the early 2000s that ship is ugly — and that’s one of the best angles on it It always surprises me when fans dump all over the Kelvin ship designs I get the dislike of the “apple store” bridge Trek-like aesthetic while still having their own little flares to them that make them distinctively “Kelvin” though in this I do wonder why the chose to use Romulan designs more inspired by TNG than TOS Since it’s set in an alternate universe than Prime to me that gives license to make it their own still be very much ‘Trek’ in appearance Also worth pointing out that when the reboot was announced I legitimately feared they would completely redesign the Enterprise into something totally unrecognizable Also impressed me how right from the start of the film it FELT like Star Trek with the familiar TOS blips as the Kelvin came into view but when I heard those tones I very specifically thought to myself “okay Ultimately the first film was a fun adventure but it wasn’t until BEYOND that I felt the series really captured the spirit of the franchise in any meaningful way I think we’re very lucky to get what we did in the Kelvin films with regard to ship design They could have literally gone anywhere with it those opening TOS blips at the beginning of the 09′ film were dead-on Trek I thought the 09′ film was something pretty special very much enjoyed it and very re-watchable Since I never thought for a minute that even Abrams would go for a radical redesign along the lines of the Ralph McQuarrie pre-TMP artwork (which eventually became the basis of the Discovery) But I’ll grant that could be a matter of expectations some would say — at considerable length on that subject much of which can probably still be found on the archives on this very site bob orci not pleased with some of the comments on this site In terms of ‘feeling’ like Trek I’m glad those blips were able to compensate for the fact that much of the Kelvin was filmed in an abandoned factory (with the concrete floors visible in some shots) which is sure unlike any Starfleet aesthetic I ever heard of You wanted it filmed in a grey square rooms like TOS I’ll agree the factory setting for the ship was a bad idea but let’s not act as if Trek doesnt have a history of hideous and inconsistent quality with regards to set design and were much higher quality than previous Trek films The TNG films looked awful and unless you liked cardboard sets of TOS Would I take TOS’ “gray square rooms” over the factory floor there were no “cardboard” sets on TOS; that’s just a myth.) Since you admit yourself that the factory was a bad idea I’m not sure what we’re talking about here Trek 2009 managed to look “bigger” than any of the previous films for a $150 million dollar tentpole it strikes me as pretty cheesy.) What i’m talking about is you attacking the Kelvin films for using sets that “aren’t Starfleet” yet TOS used sets that yes were made of cardboard and paper (you can see it in many scenes when they bend) and designed as grey boxes I’m not sure what is up with your odd accusation either as I was here to discuss my appreciation for the oft-disliked Kelvin Enterprise design (a big part of the video in this article) and you barged into the discussion out of nowhere to attack the sets this is what I talk about with regards to “haters.” If you hate the JJ films so much stop reading and commenting on articles about the JJ films It’s now been a full decade since they debuted mostly (and paper mache for things like boulders and exterior castle walls Set construction was one of TOS’ biggest expenses after the cast which was why a very heavy FX show like “The Doomsday Machine,” which required no additional sets turned out to be one of its biggest moneysavers even with a high-profile guest star the Starfleet aesthetic I was referring to seen not only on TOS but all the spinoffs that followed in keeping with the show’s optimistic premise I have no real issue with giving an older ship like the Kelvin a more “worn” appearance so long as it’s consistent with that look but that’s not what you get when you film in an abandoned factory with stained concrete floors and corroding equipment Abrams really should have saved that sort of thing for STAR WARS As to my other criticisms (which have never included the casting so people can post their opinions on all things Trek There are certainly things I like that others don’t not that you’re bad or foolish or even misguided for liking them You realize how condescending it is to tell someone to “relax” as you seem to be pretty worked up about all this The bizarre accusations of “fighting.” I mean Of a show that indeed used cardboard and paper sets I’ve heard them talk about it in interviews decades after seeing it firsthand on screen but people in denial over the cheap sets and set designs used on TOS need to wake up a little they did the best they could in 1966 on a tight schedule for a show that required everything to be built from scratch– and all told it looked pretty darned good for the day But when fans say they’d rather see paper mache and cardboard in TOS style designs is just plain laughable I think I would’ve liked the interiors more if there had been more consistency throughout the ship Apple store upstairs and Nostromo industrial downstairs didn’t mesh very well there’s nothing inherently wrong with a more industrial look but the difference was jarring and frankly I didn’t mind the beer factory engineering look too much but it just didn’t mesh well with the rest of the ship And all Trek ships have showed a similar style and tone of their bridges with the rest of the ship The Kelvin Enterprise was the first to do this and it felt too abstract for many I think I remember watching the 2009 movie when the captain of the Kelvin (I forget his name) goes from the bridge to the engineering decks and being confused by the experience since in the latter two movies the lower decks look more like the bridge But to my eyes the Kelvinprise design is anything but cohesive — TMP saucer (which is its best feature) an engineering section shoved brutally forward Compare the side orthographic profile to the TMP refit which does look like a cohesive whole that could really fly version looks like Frankenstein’s monster Another problem was that they scaled-up the ship’s theoretical size after some FX tests and didn’t bother to adjust recognizable features like the windows accordingly The ‘A’ refit in BEYOND didn’t look bad from the rendered angles used in the film but the production art I’ve seen suggests that it’s even uglier in some ways than the original the side angle makes it look like something Batman would design Beyond ENT-A should’ve just been the TMP Enterprise..just exactly the same In fact the D had no straight lines at all I also like JJ’s Enterprise with one minor complaint: the nacelles are too close together And you’re welcome to the ‘D’ But at least its curvy aesthetic is cohesive throughout the design the close nacelles is my only real gripe and it took me a looong time to figure out that was the problem I was having with it The angle of the pylons goes too verticle My model of the Kelvin-prise sits proudly alongside the A The Kelvin-prise I’m not a huge fan of There are elements that just don’t work for me The curving pylons… But I still like it better than the D it didn’t destroy the movie for me in any way I genuinely do get the dislike people have for the Abrams films mostly because it’s the only one that actually has a geo-political message in the vein of classic Trek I despise the Kelvinverse for being a badly digested pastiche of the authentic Star Trek It’s a kind of Star Trek for Dummies the trekkie version of Reader’s Digest Abrams’ instructions were probably written on a napkin: “Think cool It really is an ugly ship that has zero “beauty” angles but I would like to see some gameplay video When is there going to be another big Star Trek game for PC and consoles Sorta tired of all this mobile stuff coming out I would love to see something come to the Switch and isn’t as pretty as the original & refit prime versions or the Discoverse version but it’s got some nice elements to it and I think it’s unfair to call it “ugly”… It’s (and I may get flamed for saying this) far prettier than the quickly-thrown-together-on-a-budget-because-the-Andrew-Probert-design-would-have-cost-as-much-to-build-as-the-hero-ship-single-use-model Enterprise C… Wasn’t “you have the conn” the tagline of the old “Bridge Commander” 2002 PC Game We still have a small community making mods for it today lol Thrilling to match the NCC-1701 Enterprise refit and the Reliant up against each other with that Horner score in the background “Limitless”… until they shut down the game Still wondering why these games (and the TV shows/movies with constructs harnessing incredible energy at weapons and very speedy propulsion still insist on lining up their capital ships at point blank range and slugging it out It’s just going to be another Pay 2 Win RNG money pit that cares more about exploitation than fun just like every other mobile Star Trek game (and most mobile games in general) the Enterprise is the most elegant spaceship ever designed I would have preferred the Kelvin Enterprise A The Kelvin Enterprise A was only seen very briefly at the end of Beyond My guess is they are keeping the option to (somewhat) redesign it for the next movie Nice trailer but freemium and on mobiles count me out Nice attention to detail with the Constellation having the same registry number she did in Doomsday Machine and SUPER glad to see the return of BEAM-style phasers ALSO maybe this is just my eyes playing tricks on me BUT the nacelle pylons of the Constitution class seem to be straighter (as in not curved) than they ever were in the Kelvin movies although they seem to retain the same general ANGLE they did in the movies and yet it’s still an improvement IMO the Saladin seems to be a Kelvin-class vessel rather than what is typically considered a Saladin-class Also the Kelvin Timeline visual style still refuses to acknowledge shields and/or shield technology AND judging by the image of the Enterprise used at the head of this article this takes place before Star Trek Beyond in the Kelvin Timeline continuity Unfortunately, the gameplay itself is nowhere near as interesting or dynamic as that trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hf1nCbeEG4 You don’t even really command ships or anything the Kelvin universe is how most fans under 25 got introduced to the franchise It’s probably also cheaper to license :) Only Trekkies seem to live in a bizarre altered reality where the truth is a reach (and Fox News viewers) their first exposure to the actual content (not pop culture awareness but viewing an actual episode or movie) and it’s the JJ films they’ve seen If w’ere talking pop culture awareness you’ll get Big Bang Theory or Family Guy in all likelihood The problem is though they didn’t turn into long terms fans after that they turned Star Trek into Star Wars style of action with a lot of young hot actors and $150 million budget It’s not exactly hard to get teenagers to turn up for that It’s a big popcorn action film end of the day The issue though is it didn’t seem to make them loyal to those movies and why Beyond did so poorly Also explains why that film had literally no merchandise because none of the young audiences they attracted for the first movie even wanted to buy it and they clearly knew it Now these movies feels like it’s just the same people watching these movies who has been watching Trek for decades if Beyond is anything to go by But I have always said in today’s franchise world it’s just easier for people to move on faster when a franchise isn’t pumping out a lot of content You got so many other movie sequels coming out at a much faster rate and that was the Kelvin films down fall And at the rate they are going with the next film (assuming it even happens) it looks like they haven’t learned their lesson they figured they could wait years and years between movies not realising the younger hip n’ happening audience have grown up and when presented with Beyond were like ‘WTF 20years ago!..like hello theres Star Wars now and Guardians (oh wait no there isn’t)’ Christ knows what the younger audience will make of ST4 if they ever figure out how much to pay Pine & Hemswoth without bankrupting the studio…’uh Thor and the WonderWoman dude in sum space movie that isn’t star wars Some Trekkies will never appreciate what the Kelvin films -like em’ or not- did for the franchise in a positive way No licensed game has ever captured the Trek feel anywhere close to Sublight’s iPad masterpiece “FTL”…and this is coming from someone who’s been playing Trek games since Vectrex and Starfleet Battles I thought Starfleet Command was a pretty awesome game Now that is one I would like to see resurrected for mobile Starfleet Command was indeed a great series of games I also played Bridge Commander quite frequently back in the day I also loved both of the Elite Force titles but it was so buggy it was almost unplayable I REALLY want to see another great single player Trek game and not the mess that was the Trek game that came out after the 2009 movie we probably won’t get that single player game Oh yay another game I won’t play…yawn…where’s my dang movie? The hype ahead of this announcement was that they were teasing the next film Of course we know that ain’t happening 🙄 I wish Eaglemoss would make more models of the other ships They do not know if they are going to continue making films of the Kelvin – thing but anyway they make a game just another skinned resource building game zoomed out computer controlled things with no user control I want to see another Star Trek 4 made with Chris Pine and the other crew I became instantly disinterested with the first sentence of the article that said “massive multiplayer real time strategy” which is just the same thing as a MMO version of Warcraft….oh wait Might as well be a Kelvin Universe Only skin of STO I am seriously done with MMO’s of all kinds What the hell happened to great single player only games All the good developers are slowly moving towards MMO only titles and it’s honestly just making me more disappointed and sad when the HELL will we get another good “Single Player with good campaign” Star trek game The last one was the game titled “Star Trek” what with the lackluster controls and poor optimization when will we see another good single player Trek title I’m probably preaching the choir and will probably never see another new single player trek game Do you guys remember when there were REAL Star Trek games available Starfleet Academy and Elite Force 1 and 2 on my Mac using a Windows emulator Before that I remember playing a Star Trek game on the Apple II at school Playing these games make me feel like a real man; games like STO quite simply fail to satisfy… Why is it so hard to get a AAA quality Trek game on CONSOLES Yes the MMO Trek Online is fun but I mean something serious A Mass Effect Andromeda type game without the bugs Emergency services were called to the scene but declared the victim dead on arrival. According to police, she was found "with multiple stab wounds." The circumstances surrounding her death are yet to be confirmed. (Note for international fans: You can see it on Instagram) — Star Trek on Paramount+ (@StarTrekOnPPlus) October 14, 2020 there were a number of changes and new elements added to the title sequence… DOT-7 like robots A new (possibly 32nd-century Starfleet) phaser or pistol Cleveland “Book” Booker’s ship The wormhole used to travel to the 32nd century Michael and Book (and his cat) on Book’s ship Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham (in civilian clothes) and David Ajala as Cleveland “Book” Booker David Ajala as Cleveland “Book” Booker with his cat Grudge Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly (in civilian clothes) Anthony Rapp as Paul Stamets (with new Starfleet badge) Michelle Yoeh as (Mirror) Phillipa Georgiou Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham (in science uniform with new Starfleet badge) Episodes will be available on Fridays internationally on Netflix Keep up with all the news and reviews from the new Star Trek Universe on TV at TrekMovie.com for much you try to make us love Michael Burnham They should just make it official and change the title as well At least then it wouldn’t feel quite as much like a bait and switch I looked at the outline of the face in the intro and thought “oh I wonder who that is.“ And when I realized who it was I felt a cocktail of annoyance and disappointment but neither feel strong enough to lead the show…which I also like I’m hoping and expecting now that strange new world is on the way — with a traditional format Maybe we’ll get to see Ephraim & Dot and family I want to see some nice blue glowing space tardigrades like the ones recently discovered that have a protective coating against radiation The crystals are red now… I think I know why but will wait and see without further comment ;) but are those Dilithium (Trilithium?) Crystals or Time Crystals Not a silly question at all… My thoughts is that they are Time Crystals… this is of course just speculation on my part we only have to scroll back up a little to see the label “Dilithium” regarding them so it’s very possible I’m letting my ignorant hang out for all to see :/ I thought originally that the green ones in the titles for season one were dilithium But when the season two titles doubled down on the green crystals I’m wondering if they are in some way related or similar structures since Queen Po and the Discovery team were able to use Po’s dilithium incubator to charge the time crystal Not a huge departure from previous seasons From Kurtzman’s comments when the new title came out a couple of months back I thought that the main titles were undergoing a more profound update I like it though and the tweaks are consistent with the kinds of updates done over the first two seasons One of the most complex and fully realized characters in Trek It is the mechanism that allows safe conversion/combustion of antimatter and matter into energy antimatter for starship use is generated at solar powered conversion stations Dilithium in DIscovery is still an important resource – it played a big part of “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry” And until Queen Po gives the Federation the technology to recrystallize dilithum (which Scotty doesn’t seem to have until Star Trek IV) I’m still thinking that whatever Po passed on in that prototype dilithium incubator hack they built to charge the time crystal will be a key to solving the problems created by the Burn The Federation technology that Scotty had in the later films might not be Po’s method or might be something else she developed Being realistic isn’t the point of Star Trek Now it can only aspire toward being aspirational I wonder how the DOTs will tie into this season and they must be super outdated by the 32nd century That cat is a Maine Coon cat; they are very bold cats (But the new com badges are a jumbled mess The silhouette of the badge contrasting with the fabric is just an oval until you look closer and see the etched in lines The cutouts on the righthand side of the ovals are the rank pips You can clearly see that Stamets has two full pips and a hollow pip to designate Lieutenant Commander but slightly easier to read than the tiny dots on the field of the delta I prefer the colourful SNW uniform solution of having bands on the sleeves Imbedding the “pips” into the badge and makes it difficult to tell who’s who at a distance Braxton and crew still had pips on their shirt collar And the pips on the original Discovery badge never made sense to begin with if indeed Discovery is suppose to be same timeline and (originally) time period as TOS Opinions are called gate keeping these days People are allowed to have opinions- but when they attempt to force them on to people as fact and attack anyone who disagrees- that’s gatekeeping Whenever people say “we” in their comments they should stop right there and hit the backspace button There is no “we.” Every fan has his or her own opinion Just because you like or dislike something doesn’t mean every fan The delta always tugs at my childhood imagination and fandom… since Starfleet may be a fleet of one at this point “We’re our own thing and this is our new symbol” It’s not pure adventure and escapism I do very much respect what SMG is doing and how she’s doing it It’s what she’s *given* that I I find Saru to he a very compelling character although the “ganglia define him… oh not any more” and quick recovery/adjustment bugged me the writing — not the actor or the acting Been following TrekMovie since it was brand new Can’t wait to see Discovery Season 3 I have a feeling every new season is going to get better It has happened in previous Star Trek shows That means that they probably aren’t a Trill but it seems that their story is closely related to the Trills somehow The symbionts are the non-binary part of the Trills The hosts for the most part seem very binary You’re referring to the lady in Babylon 5 uniform but does she refer to herself as “we” Because she doesn’t look large enough to qualify for plural… I was really hoping for new uniforms to go with the new comm badge If the new badges come from the 32nd Century equivalent of Starfleet and the 23rd Century Discovery crew have replication capacity for uniforms it stands to reason they should’ve gotten 32nd Century uniforms as well There is a long tradition in many military organizations of allowing units to keep distinctive and historic uniforms while giving them common rank insignia trained differently and from a different time Their unit cohesion will be strengthened by the distinction But we’d be silly to assume for a moment that Book just /happened/ to be at a position that was (literally from the teaser) /too/ close to Burnham’s expected arrival trajectory We’ve already been given a heads up during official panels that Culber will be focusing on the crew’s mental health What that means for Dr Tracy Pollard and the rest of the Sick-bay team is a question but everyone on the ship is going to be centuries behind in their specialties I doubt they’ll just give up and abandon their disciplines en masse Discovery n the 32nd Century is what should have been from the start I look at their first 2 seasons as prologue If everyone in show business wasn’t an executive producer for this show I guess it takes a lot of them to change a light bulb now Amazing to think old Trek got by with so few There’s a great interview on Art of the Title the lead creative on the titles on season one One of her comments was that the amount of title cards was unusually large for a TV show I remember counting once and being appalled at the amount of producer/executive producer credits The link to that article is: https://www.artofthetitle.com/title/star-trek-discovery/ That’s how screenwriters are credited when they work on staff because he backed out and Kurtzman had to finish his work with a new staff Actually EP is the highest rank for writers in the WGA hierarchy EP is also used for the creators even if they are no longer working on the series actively Which for Trek means that the Roddenberry estate gets 2 EPs credited The supervising director that oversees production also gets an EP listing Has there been *any* mention of Bajorans in any interviews Because that looks so much like a Bajoran symbol but seeing Lurians and Cardassians…hmmm I wish DS9 got more love like TNG and Voyager are getting in these new shows if the Trill character turns out to be Dax You missed the Vulcan salute with the IDIC Symbol in its palm (at 0:50) but I’ve always found the title sequence visually drab and this is no exception The format of the title sequences is clever in that it can be redone to reflect the storyline I also preferred the starfield/outer space based title sequences of Classic Trek (and Voyager’s was praised even by the strongest critics of the show!) I think Discovery ditching it reflects its rejection of space exploration Which given the title of the show is a real shame I think that it’s worth reading the article on the titles that someone linked in here The creators knew how iconic the original titles were and were very concerned to avoid the disaster of the song that was put on the Enterprise titles One of the three was a long-term fan while one had no history with Trek: so a balanced team They definitely were instructed to come up with something new for a new era and needed to avoid a voiceover by the captain – because Lorca ;) Going back to Da Vinci’s diagrams as an inspiration is a creative choice that respects the history of the franchise It sounds as though a lot of care went into them and they are well respected within the community of designers not the (potential) music/song/voiceover part I just don’t think paper drawings is a good fit for space-based scifi in general and Star Trek in particular where paper for business communications has long gone the way of the dodo (actually it already nearly has in our age and the infection risk of the pandemic will give it another push to go all digital) For me the paper evokes nostalgia and fairytale content While much Discovery’s scifi certainly qualifies as fairytale (that was in my head reading your description of a “Queen charging a time crystal” the shocking breaks with canon were anything but nostalgic Nitpick from the design and font nerd in me: For some reason they used the new font for “Discovery” Was that change to a unified “Star Trek” a last minute decision when the titles were already done Star Trek hasn’t been good about keeping its logo straight over the years Cleveland Booker and the Vulcan Temple of Doom It’s a shame that two shows that are parodies of Star Trek are the ones that brought us back the traditional openings of the show: The Orville and Lower Decks It comes to something when an animated comedy show and a live action comedy that is not even made by CBS are considered the best Star Trek around… with Titmouse Vancouver being the contracted animation house CBS Eye Animation was announced last year and is ViacomCBS new animation arm and it’s not clear if CBS will be establishing in-house capacity or continuing to contract externally (as is done for vfx) The fact Starfleet and the Federation failed because of bad Dilithium crystals is just stupid Several hundred years in the future and still no better tech The start of last week did not look promising for Hector The Belgian authorities had implemented measures to cull the area's pig population to prevent further outbreak of the African swine fever The people of Athus and beyond did not support this measure more than 3,000 signatures had been collected to save Hector's life Hector was taken from his home in an animal park in Athus by a 'pignapper' Hector has not yet returned to his original owners Hector is alive and well and on his way to a new home in a different country They affirmed that Hector will have a new home The page you are looking for might have been removed Dog owners have been warned to take precautions ahead of Bonfire Night this year as the sound of fireworks can cause the pets distress and even lead to fatalities Firework season begins this weekend and runs until New Year’s Eve but especially over the next stressed he developed a fear of loud noises after a Bonfire Night fireworks show “A few years ago on the evening of the annual bonfire night fireworks celebration I visited a friend who lives beside Battersea Park,” she sad Norman had no issues with loud noises so I didn’t think the noise would be an issue “The fireworks were excessively loud and Norman became so stressed he wet himself he was agitated and shaking and it was very distressing for us both “Since that evening Norman has developed a fear of loud noise and will now leave the room and hide if I use the vacuum cleaner or the TV is too loud “Fortunately I live in an area where the noise from fireworks celebrations is minimal so Norman and I plan to stay indoors and hide from any noise but I know a lot of dogs and owners who aren’t that lucky and will be facing a very stressful time.” Dog day care company Dog Tales Club has said during the firework season it often hears of concerns from clients about how to deal with the noise of fireworks and who are keen to know how to keep their dogs calm and safe He said there are a number of practical steps that pet owners can take to avoid undue stress on their pets Mr Tegani said: “It is important to make sure that pets are kept indoors in a calm and safe environment and that you do what you can to blank out the sound try to acclimatise your pets to the sound of fireworks There is plenty of downloadable content which can give you the opportunity to introduce your pet to a variety of potentially disturbing noises in a controlled “Take your dog for a precautionary toilet In a brief press statement Luxembourg’s train service CFL reported that the incident had caused delays on the line to Luxembourg, especially at Rodange and Pétange. Belgian authorities reported that the cause of the scare was a World War II shell discovered by the tracks near an underground passage and a bridge known as “Pont Noir”. The weapon was discovered at about 1pm and the army was called in who sealed off the area. However one hour later the all-clear was given and calm returned to Athus.
