we travel to la belle province and explore how the Bloc Québécois’ long shot attempt to unseat a Trudeau-era cabinet minister in Quebec City could indicate a turn away from the sovereigntist party
Welcome to iPolitics’ Battleground Breakdown
we’ll be profiling 10 key ridings from across the country that could determine which party forms the next government
This election campaign is not what Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet had in mind
Blanchet was poised to become Canada’s next Leader of the Official Opposition
a job he’s now almost certain to lose out on
“we will probably get more seats than we have had for a very long time in Quebec.”
a recently-renamed riding that has been represented by longtime Liberal cabinet minister Jean-Yves Duclos since 2015
Before Justin Trudeau announced his decision to step down as prime minister in January
projections based on public opinion data suggested the Bloc had an 10-point lead in Quebec Centre
It’s a microcosm of political trends within Quebec over the past few months
Before the emergence of Mark Carney and the Liberals’ polling resurgence
while the Liberals had slipped into third-place behind the Conservatives
the separatists are forecasted to lose more than a third of the party’s caucus to the Liberals
as recent projections have the Bloc winning 19 seats
which would be a marked decrease from the 32 ridings they won in the 2021 election
“This is probably going to be a difficult election for the Bloc,” said Thierry Giasson
a political science professor at Laval University
“What is expected right now is that the ridings that are currently Liberal will remain Liberal.”
it would mean a fourth-term in office for Duclos
despite Trudeau’s former Quebec lieutenant being dropped from Carney’s cabinet last month
Duclos’ demotion came after he endorsed ex-finance minister Chrystia Freeland in the Liberal leadership race
Freeland came a distant runner-up to Carney
who placed first amongst registered Liberals in each of Canada’s 343 ridings
it would have been realistic to be competitive against Jean-Yves Duclos
who was a star in cabinet,” continued Giasson
“It would have been a rough battle [for the Bloc] to oust him and make a gain here
but now it’s going to be even more difficult.”
It should be noted that before Duclos first won Quebec Centre
the riding was largely considered a Bloc stronghold
It voted New Democrat during the ‘orange wave’ in 2011
but was represented by former Bloc MP Christiane Gagnon from 1993 to 2011
and the separatists often won the seat by more than 10,000 votes
the Bloc candidate lost to Duclos by fewer than 3,500 votes in 2019 and 2021
a political pundit and former Quebec advisor to Trudeau
“[Duclos] has had close-ish [sic] in the past
and I’d expect something similar,” Kalles said in an interview with iPolitics
I wouldn’t have imagined the numbers we’re seeing now.”
the current federal election campaign is unique compared to previous races
as the same issues are top-of-mind for voters across the country
“We’re so used to looking at Quebec voters as having different priorities than voters in the rest of Canada
and I just don’t think that’s the case right now,” he said
“Quebecers are like everyone else in Canada
and who’s able to manage Trump as well as possible.”
and therefore it’s a binary choice [between the Liberals and Conservatives]
That’s why the Bloc are struggling.”
As for the local political landscape in Quebec City
Kalles doesn’t expect Carney’s decision to remove Duclos from cabinet to have any impact on the electoral results in Quebec Centre
“This is a cabinet that existed nine days before the election was called,” he said
“I don’t think that’s a major focus and I haven’t heard that kind of blowback.”
this charming establishment opened in 2021 under the guidance of two former sommeliers from Coureur des Bois
After starting in the kitchen, Pascal Paradis naturally fell into the world of wine. He notably worked at the famous Toqué!, Laloux, and then at Coureur des Bois in Beloeil
which has received the Grand Award from Wine Spectator since 2018
who grew up in the restaurant industry and recently graduated from ITHQ
Guillaume shares the same dream: to one day have his own restaurant
The two sommeliers decided to embark on this adventure with a wine bar
located just a stone’s throw from the water in Vieux-Beloeil
No matter— the co-owners took advantage of this imposed downtime to refine their restaurant
They crafted custom furniture and created a string of lights made from wine bottles
“We wanted a place that reflects who we are
Far from the white tablecloth ambiance of the establishments where they previously worked
the two partners offer a wine bar with a family-friendly and relaxed atmosphere
combining rigorous professionalism with evident enjoyment
Pascal has returned to the kitchen to create the menu
he offers warm market cuisine in generous portions
also offers a tasting menu that changes every week
along with food and wine pairings upon request
The owners take pride in working as much as possible with local producers, preferably from the region. This way, they feature ingredients and products from places like La Bête à Pain, Le Pain dans les Voiles
Let’s talk about the wine. The cellar also highlights a few local producers, such as Domaine du Fleuve and Clos des Cigales from Montérégie
where you can purchase one or several bottles to take home
with recommendations from the sommeliers who are happy to suggest pairings
with cuvées sourced from all over the world
The list is not very extensive due to the limited storage capacity of the place
but it is well-curated and gets straight to the point
Pascal and Guillaume have one guiding principle: “These are all bottles that we personally enjoy.” In short

but because of the hefty cost of licensing photographs
we’ll be looking just at our familiar friends from Luxembourg in this article.)

Lemay’s architecture, interior design and landscape architecture for a modern aquatics center in a community southwest of Montreal prove that judicious design can elevate projects with modest budgets and integrate with the most pastoral landscapes.
The City of Beloeil, QC, is defined by the dramatic cliffs of Mount Saint-Hilaire, the Richelieu River and picturesque agricultural lands. Inaugurated in May 2019, its new aquatics center offers a strong architectural response to this unique environment.
“Our goal was to maximize delicate and nuanced design strategies to make the most of this community-building opportunity, said Pierre E. Leclerc, Lemay associate and project director.”
A luminous, translucent glass box on a black base comprises the building’s simple massing of two distinct and complementary geometric forms, its elements echoing the meeting of sky, water and plain. Smooth and shiny by day, at night the light box reveals the depth of its structure and the nature of the activity taking place inside. A system of vertical acoustic louvers acts as a natural and artificial light diffuser, accentuating an impression of vibrations inside and outside the pool envelope.
By the simplicity of its form and construction, the project reflects the duality of everyday and exceptional: the geometric encounter between opacity and transparency, the darkness of the base and the lightness of the water bodies offer rich vibrations of textures and variations on architectural form. These formal variations are revealed from a distance and in the approach to the building through the rhythms of pedestrians, cyclists or motorists.
“The project’s design-build approach and cost constraints created a challenging context for excellence, but we ultimately succeeded in creating an integrated presence that echoes a contrasting environment, Andrew King, Partner and Design Principal at Lemay”
The interiors are flooded with light and the southeast façade is directly in line with the axis of Mont Saint-Hilaire, so that users can swim, bathe or slide while maintaining contact with the mountain. The new presence knits together community fabric and bucolic landscape: a seamless black solid emerging from the ground, drawing users of all ages to converge.

Beloeil’s old quarter is known for its urban landscape and unique atmosphere. If you’re in the area, it’s a must to visit the neighbourhood along the Richelieu River. Mista is a veteran establishment in the neighbourhood, and anyone who loves classic or reinvented Italian cuisine will appreciate it.
Making your way and standing out in the restaurant industry is a battle without mercy. It goes without saying that a restaurant that is able to celebrate a 15th anniversary deserves recognition and a round of applause—bravo, Yannick Tardy! At the age of 17, Yannick started a home catering company, and today he boasts more than five restaurants to his name.
The Le Mista adventure began when Yannick and his brother noticed the lack of accessible Italian cuisine in Old Beloeil. Soon after, they opened Le Mista, and Yannick now runs it full time.
With its industrial yet warm decor, and its lively atmosphere, Mista is the perfect spot for a dinner with friends, a festive date, or a group evening. Note that despite the 80 seats inside and the 80 seats on the patio, it is still recommended to make a reservation. They also have a bar, if prefer to sit there. Don’t hesitate to ask the friendly staff for advice, and you’ll probably run into the smiling Marigil Rivest, who is Yannick’s partner.
Mista means “mixture” in Italian. And when you look at the menu that Mista offers, you realize that Yannick is taking you on an adventure that offers a mix of classic and fusion dishes. Whether you’re a purist or looking for something new, Mista is sure to please.
The wine list at Mista is the work of Pascal Ledoux. It is affordable and includes private imports as well as more prestigious bottles that will satisfy both amateur and professional wine lovers. If you’re more into cocktails, you’ll also find some great suggestions, made with original infusions that stand out from anything you’ve had before.
A visit to Mista shows how easily new and authentic Italian cuisine can coexist under the same roof. Mista has been in operation for 15 years and the owner is very proud of the loyalty of his customers. Here, you can find good food, a long history and a loyal clientele. In sum, if it wasn’t clear enough already, Le Mista is a staple on the South Shore.
On the menu for over twenty years, Joe Beef’s famous lobster spaghetti is one of the most iconic dishes in Montreal. Here’s the recipe!

Princess Alix de Ligne has wed her prince in a fairytale wedding held at her family's 14th century Belgian chateau.
The 31-year-old royal looked radiant in an elegant ivory gown as she married the Earl Guillaume de Dampierre yesterday.
The ceremony took place at St Peter's Church in the village of Beloeil, followed by a lavish reception at Beloeil Castle - which is known as the Versailles of Belgium.
Around 800 guests attended the wedding, including the the Grand-Duke Henri of Luxembourg and his wife the Grand-Duchess Maria Teresa.
Alix is the daughter of the Prince Michel de Ligne and Princess Eleonora of Brazil and the granddaughter of Princess Alix of Luxembourg, the sister of Grand Duke Jean.
She wore a vintage-inspired gown designed by Belgian designer Gérald Wathelet, which featured an embroidered panel on the waistline that accentuated her slim figure.
The ivory dress also boasted fringe detail on the waist and at the sleeves, while a long lace veil dating back to 1810 added a touch of drama.
Villagers lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the bride and groom as they arrived at the church, which was adorned with roses.
The triumphant couple looked delighted as they exited the church following the ceremony, lifting up their arms as they posed for photographs.
French aristocrat Guillaume, also 31, playfully put his hand to his ear as guests cheered.
His mother, Roseline Alvare de Biaudos de Casteja, stood out in a bold fuchsia suit, while Princess Elenora wore a nude lace dress.
The pair met at a party in Paris 2010 after being introduced by mutual friends and announced their engagement in the French newspaper Le Figaro in February.
While Alix grew up on the family estate in Belgium, she moved to Brazil three years ago where she works for jeweller H Stern.
She previously worked for Cartier in Paris after studying in Antwerp and New York.
Guillaume moved to Rio de Janeiro with Alix three years ago and is understood to be working for the consultancy firm McKinsey.
The vast stately home of Beloeil, which was formerly a medieval fortress, sits behind a moat and boasts stunning French-inspired gardens.
