'My acts after the hard crash were made in a rage of anger and don’t belong in this sport' says Belgian Champion
The Belgian Champion later apologised for his actions and said he understood why officials decided to disqualify him from the race after pulling him from the circuit and into the mechanic's pits on the sixth lap
"I understand the decision of the jury to dsq me today in Beringen
My acts after the hard crash were made in a rage of anger and don’t belong in this sport," Iserbyt said in a statement on Twitter following the race
Now I’ll focus on the positive things and look forward to the next races!"
a five-rider lead group held only a slim lead over eventual winner Lars van der Haar (Baloise Trek Lions)
who was in a chase group with Iserbyt and Kamp
Van der Haar used that as an opportunity to punch to the front and close the gap.
Iserbyt and Kamp crashed on a muddy descent
their bikes tangled into the fencing on the left side of the narrow course.
Iserbyt untangled himself from the orange fencing first and picked up his bike
but then appeared to have intentionally stomped on Kamp's bike as he tried to get back on the course.
Kamp struggled to untangle his handlebars from the fencing
and he appeared visibly upset at Iserbyt's actions
Kamp grabbed ahold of Iserbyt's jersey to try and stop the rider and the pair then exchanged words.
Video footage then showed both riders trying to get their bikes functioning again
Iserbyt was back on his bike first and raced toward the pits to take a spare bike
unable to fix his bike which appeared to have a broken rear derailleur and a hanging chain
Kamp eventually reached the pits and received a spare bike but was much too far back to reconnect with the lead group
Iserbyt started the sixth lap over a minute behind the race leaders and Kamp crossed the line at over 1:30 back.
An official was waiting for Iserbyt as he approached the pits on that lap
The official and Iserbyt spoke briefly before the rider then exited the course
Kamp was able to finish the race in 22nd place at 3:50 behind
Iserbyt later told HLN that while he regretted his actions at Exact Cross Beringen
he and Kamp have been at odds since last season
accusing Kamp of cutting ahead of him on the course unnecessarily in previous races
“That reaction was not necessary,” Iserbyt told HLN
“It happened in the heat of the battle
There was something simmering between us since last season
He cut off at places where it was not necessary or where it simply could not be done

Fem van Empel will start her cyclocross season this Saturday at the Exact Cross in Beringen. After a long preparation, the 22-year-old world champion is eagerly looking forward to another cyclocross-filled winter. “I want to keep improving myself.”
The Exact Cross in Beringen marks the first Flemish cyclocross race of the new season. Van Empel is also making her return after an instructive road season. After the Tour de France Femmes, a long preparation for the cyclocross season followed for the reigning world champion.
“I am extremely looking forward to cyclocross again”, Van Empel says. “I've been able to prepare well over the past few months. The first cyclocross race of the season is always a gauge of how the form is, so that brings some excitement. The course in Beringen has changed a bit compared to last year. I hope I can compete for the win straight away. Furthermore, I can't wait to experience the great atmosphere during the races again, because the discipline remains special to me.”
With nineteen wins, Van Empel dominated the previous winter. As icing on the cake, she renewed her title at both the European and world championships. “I have marked both championships with dot on the calendar. Again it will be a goal of mine to win those races, but that is the case for all races where I start. I want to get the maximum out of everything and I want to keep improving myself.”

The 2024-2025 international cyclocross season in Belgium gets underway on Saturday with the be-MINE cross at Beringen
on a former mining site in Limburg province
The race will be a test case for the 2026 Belgian cyclocross championships
Cyclocross can be best described as a cross between road cycling
It’s a form of bicycle racing that takes place on pavement
steep hills and involves obstacles requiring the rider to carry the bike
Races take place on a closed circuit in a park or other open land with competitors racing multiple laps
Since the season takes place from September to February
The sport is particularly popular in Flanders
but also in the Netherlands and – to a lesser extent – France
The 2024-2025 international cyclocross season in Belgium gets underway on Saturday with the be-MINE cross at Beringen
at a former mining site in Limburg province
The course has been changed: the start and finish zone was for example moved to the diving centre at the site
will be a lot less steep and thus more safe
The race is part of the Exact Cross series
victory in the men's race went to Thibau Nys
regarded as one of the sport's brightest prospects
one of the most decorated athletes in cyclocross history
had an impressive season on the road with nine wins – including five in the World Tour
He would normally be one of the main candidates to win at Beringen
but he himself indicated that he is not yet in top form as he became ill after the road season
Among the main favourites are two other Flemings: Eli Iserbyt
will certainly want to show himself as well
Dutch rider Lars van der Haar is another important candidate to take the victory
Dutch rider Fem van Empel will be eager to achieve a third consecutive win in Beringen

Officials disqualify Eli Iserbyt after stomping on Ryan Kamp's bike following lap-5 crash
Lars van der Haar (Baloise Trek Lions) is off to a winning start to the cyclocross season with victory at the opening round of the Exact Cross series Beringen-Be-Mine Cross on Saturday.
Van der Haar closed the gap to a lead group that included European Champion Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) and then took the race lead on the last lap
opening a winning gap and finishing 10 seconds ahead of Vanthourenhout
Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin-Deceuninck) finished third at 18 seconds back
The field split apart as riders crashed through a tight
downhill mud section of the course causing several pile-ups and one rider to go over the barriers and into the grass on the other side
Ten riders stayed close together at the front end of the field with Vandebosch leading with a small gap as Orts Lloret led the chase behind
and the rest of the field split apart further back
A select group reconnected on the second lap that included Crelan-Corendon teammates Vandebosch and Wyseure
Baloise Trek Lions teammates Nys and Van der Haar
and Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal teammates Vanthourenhout and Iserbyt
Wyseure attacked to go solo on lap three with Aerts leading the large chase group
The lead group again thinned out and split apart on the fourth lap as Vandebosch and Wyseure
Vanthourenhout and Vandeputte gained ten seconds on the rest of the field led by Iserbyt.
the five lead riders held only a slim lead and Van der Haar used that as an opportunity to punch to the front of the chase group and close the gap.

Iserbyt got back on his functioning bike and raced toward the pits to take a spare bike
Vandeputte led the race ahead of Vanthourenhout
Nys and Orts Lloret at the start of the sixth lap.
Iserbyt crossed the line over a minute back and Kamp crossed the line at over 1:30 back
race officials asked him to stop and he was disqualified from the race
Aerts attacked partway through the sixth lap building a significant lead as Vandeputte and Vanthourenhout tried to close down the move
Van der Haar just off the back at the start of the penultimate lap
Van der Haar proved strongest on the technical course as he caught up to Vandeputte and Vanthourenhout
as Aerts struggled to hold his pace at the front
Aerts was caught by the trio just ahead of the last lap
Vanthourenhout counter-attacked but Van der Haar closed the gap on the last lap and took the lead and kept the pressure on for the last half of the circuit
He extended his gap over the flyover and onto the tarmac and crossed the line with the victory

Eli Iserbyt apologised for 'rage of anger' at event in Beringen
Cyclo-cross rider Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) was disqualified from a race and fined after he stomped on a fellow competitor’s bike
The Belgian champion planted his foot onto the back wheel of Fenix rider Ryan Kamp’s bike after the pair crashed together at Saturday’s Exact Cross event in Beringen
a race official pulled Iserbyt from the course
and he was later fined 100 CHF (£89.09)
The initial collision came on the fifth of eight laps of the muddy circuit
when Kamp and Iserbyt went shoulder-to-shoulder on a sharp downhill section
Iserbyt said he was overcome with a “rage of anger” that led him to stomp on his opponent’s bike
holding his bike which appeared to have a broken rear derailleur
three minutes and 50 seconds behind the winner
Shortly after the race finished, Iserbyt shared an apology message on X: “I understand the decision of the jury to dsq me today in Beringen
My acts after the hard crash were made in a rage of anger and don’t belong in this sport
For this I want to apologise to everyone involved
Now I’ll focus on the positive things and look forward to the next races!”

Iserbyt also gave an interview to Belgian publication HLN
in which he said his reaction was “not necessary”
but came after something Kamp had said to him
Iserbyt said: “I’m not going to repeat that
The duo were teammates at Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal for five years until Kamp joined Fenix – a racing arm linked to his road team Alpecin-Deceuninck – earlier this year
tension between the two had been “simmering for a while”
with incidents of “cutting up” and “pushing” last season
Kamp was also approached for comment about the incident in Beringen
“The smartest thing is to say nothing
Worse things will come of it,” he told HLN
“We were riding next to each other in the corner
I'm not going to say anything more about it

one of the former boarding houses dating from the heyday of the mining industry in Limburg
The building had been empty for some time and the city of Beringen (Limburg) put it up for sale in 2022
For a while there was talk of housing a Koranic school there
but that met with protests from the neighbourhood
The new owners have just received the approved accommodation label from the local tourism board Tourism Limburg
They have transformed the historic building into a modern B&B with a nod to its mining past
we used a lot of iron like the staircase and the iron windows between the bedroom and the bathroom,’ explains Ann De Schutter of Guesthouse Just Be Mine
we have hung old photos that refer to the rich mining past including the miners’ sports clubs
the mineworkers’ cathedral and their culinary heritage
In all the rooms there are chocolate colliers' lamps,’ Ann laughs
The building has been transformed from a simple boarding house to a luxury B&B
I see that there was not that much luxury here but it did radiate cosiness
money was invested to give the miners the necessary comfort.’
The number of overnight stays in Limburg has been rising for several years and there is also an upward trend in Beringen
That's why Visit Beringen is pleased with this new investment
‘There is a huge need in Beringen for additional hotels and places to stay
There is great demand and we definitely need to expand our offerings,’ says Orenalle Schreurs
The opening of the B&B is scheduled for 1 May
Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. LLC (CPChem) has approved a project to expand capacity of its petrochemical plant in Beringen
in the country’s eastern province of Limburg
the project will involve construction of a new unit that will double the Beringen plant’s production capacity of polyalphaolefins (PAO) to 120,000 tonnes/year upon its planned startup in 2024
Designed to benefit from advantages in infrastructure and feedstock availability at the site
Beringen’s newly proposed low-viscosity PAO unit comes as part of CPChem’s commitment to meeting increased global demand for PAOs used in synthetic products such as lubricants
as well as essential components in automotive
“The construction of a new unit near our existing [Beringen] assets will allow us to benefit from strong local expertise and leverage Belgium’s central position to meet customer needs globally,” said Mitch Eichelberger
CPChem’s executive vice-president of polymers and specialties
Expansion of its PAO production capacity also supports the company’s commitment to accelerating change for a sustainable future
as PAOs help reduce energy consumption through efficient lubrication
which lowers fuel consumption and emissions by reducing friction
The operator said increased global demand for PAOs is fueled by the PAO molecules’ performance at extreme temperatures
as well as by new applications that include electric and fuel-efficient vehicles and heat-transfer fluid
Characterizing the new Beringen PAO unit only as a “significant investment,” CPChem did not reveal a precise value of the proposed project

World Champion Fem van Empel (Visma-Lease a Bike) secured a dominant solo victory in the in the opening round of the Exact Cross series Beringen-Be-Mine Cross on Saturday
She opened a solo lead on the second of five laps and finished 42 seconds ahead of former world champions Ceylin Del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and 1:16 ahead of another former world champion Lucinda Brand (Baloise Trek Lions)
Italian champion Sara Casasola (Hess) led the field onto the course ahead of Van Empel
who was wearing the Dutch champion's jersey
with a long line of some 35 riders competing in the opening round of the Exact Cross series
Alvarado took the lead as the race hit the off-camber mud section of the opening lap with a strong reaction from Van Empel chasing several seconds back with Casasola on her wheel
The fast start saw a gap to the next group of chasing riders led by Brand
Inge Van der Heijden (Crelan-Corendon) and Aniek Van Alphen (Cyclocross Reds) before the start of the second lap
Van Empel and Casasola passed Alvarado as she slid out on the off-camber mud section
crashed and dropped her chain on the second lap
Alvarado got back into the race in fourth position on the course
Alvarado was quickly joined by the next chase group Franck
Van Empel led the race through the start of the third lap with 10 seconds on Casasola as Brand and Alvarado chased at an additional three seconds back.
The three chasers reconnected but an untimely crash saw Casasola go down and she was caught by the next group that included Franck
Van Empel pushed her lead out to over 40 seconds ahead of Alvarado
while Brand was in third place another 45 seconds back
Van Alphen crossed the line in fourth on the day
Belgian will miss this weekend's racing and receive a 2,500CHF fine for his actions at Exact Cross Beringen
the Belgian has been handed further punishment
with the UCI giving him a three-race ban for the incident
Iserbyt's Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal team confirmed the suspension on Saturday
informing that the UCI has taken the decision to ban the reigning Belgian and UCI World Cup champion
Iserbyt and Kamp crashed together on a muddy descent as they chased across to a five-rider lead group on the fifth of eight laps in Beringen
Iserbyt climbed over Kamp's and stomped on the Dutchman's Canyon
Kamp then grabbed Iserbyt as the pair exchanged words before both men struggled to get going again
Iserbyt remounted his Ridley and rode off first while Kamp was forced to run to the pits for a bike change with his own bike appearing to have suffered a broken rear derailleur
An official stationed in the pits disqualified Iserbyt later in the race, while Kamp finished in 22nd place, 3:50 behind winner Lars van der Haar (Baloise Trek Lions)
who finished second at the Kermiscross in Ardooie on Thursday
will now miss this weekend's racing at the Exact Cross in Essen and the Superprestige in Ruddervoorde
"Eli Iserbyt will not start in Essen and Ruddervoorde this weekend
He will also remain on the sidelines in the Dutch Heerderstrand
The UCI has suspended the Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal rider for three races after his slip-up in the opening cross of Beringen," Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal stated
"Halfway through the Exact Cross in Beringen
The rider of Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal fell together with another rider
after which the tempers calmed down for a while
It earned Iserbyt a fine of 100 Swiss francs after the race
"Eli Iserbyt apologised to the rider involved after the race
but in the meantime the UCI has also announced an additional sanction
The rider will be suspended for three races
which means he will miss the Exact Cross in Essen
the Telenet Superprestige in Ruddervoorde and the race in the Dutch Heerderstrand
there will be an additional fine of 2,500 Swiss francs [£2,215]."
Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal team manager Jurgen Mettepenningen said that the UCI could have "solved this differently"
noting that he had hoped the previous punishment was enough
"I had hoped that his punishment with a disqualification and fine was already behind him
This additional sanction will affect the Superprestige ranking
Eli also misses out on starting fees and this is also a shame for the organisers of these three races
The UCI could have solved this differently."

Borealis has started to produce polypropylene (PP) based on Neste-produced renewable feedstock in its production facilities in Kallo and Beringen
This marks the first time that Borealis has replaced fossil fuel-based feedstock in its large-scale commercial production of PP
The Belgian plants were recently awarded by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) organization with ISCC Plus certification for its renewable PP
Taking its commitment to the next level for advancing the circular economy
Borealis once again furthers its EverMinds™ ambitions
This path breaking venture in sustainable production is being driven in close collaboration with upstream and downstream value chain partners such as Neste and Henkel
It also aligns with the Borealis’ aim to ensure that 100% of its consumer products are recyclable
or produced from renewable sources by 2025
Value chain collaboration under the flag of greater circularity
Borealis and its upstream partner Neste are moving the industry closer to a circular economy of plastics thanks to the production start in December 2019 of renewable PP
After producing renewable propane using its proprietary NEXBTL™ technology
Neste sells the renewable propane to the Borealis propane dehydrogenation plant in Kallo
Here it is converted to renewable propylene
then subsequently to renewable PP at Kallo and Beringen plants
The recently finalized audits carried out by an independent third party have resulted in an ISCC Plus certification for the renewable PP produced at both Kallo and Beringen plants
This certification encompasses the entire value chain scope and verifies that the renewable feedstock used is certified as being 100% renewable and sustainably produced
Downstream partners from a variety of industries such as consumer packaging
and appliance industries can now commercialize their end-use products with a lower carbon footprint based on renewable propylene and PP produced at Borealis’ Belgian plants
Borealis is working with value chain partners to expand availability
Henkel, a global market leader in the adhesives sector and known for its strong brands in Laundry & Home Care and Beauty Care, has already embraced the values of the circular economy. Having made the use of sustainable materials a key pillar in its packaging strategy
Henkel is committed to work with its value chain partners to drive sustainable packaging solutions
Including renewable PP content in the packaging of a major Henkel brand over the course of the year marks another step in its efforts to significantly reduce its use of fossil fuel-based virgin plastics
“Producing renewable PP based on renewable feedstock for the first time in history is another concrete step towards a more sustainable carbon future,” says Lucrèce Foufopoulos
Borealis Executive Vice President Polyolefins
“Working closely with partners like Neste and Henkel
Thinking circular means capitalising on growth opportunities that accelerate the transformation to a circular economy.”
a propane dehydrogenation facility using renewable propane to replace fossil feedstock
enabling Borealis to produce mass balance certified renewable polypropylene for sustainability-focused brands like Henkel
This is an exceptional example of collaboration across the value chain making a positive sustainability impact in the polymers sector,'' says Mercedes Alonso

Home/Firefighting
Sunday night, August 11, 2019. A night I will never forget. A fire erupts in an abandoned supermarket in Beringen, Belgium
A third one is rushed to the hospital with severe burn injuries
wracking my brain over just one question: What have I done wrong
Now, almost five years later, it is time for a progress report. What have I learned from all that research? Already in an early stage it became clear to me that I had not overlooked anything that fateful night in August. I had seen everything. I was only insufficiently aware that all that sensory input is formed
and even deformed by the thought processes in our head
I want to clarify how we think under (time) pressure at a fireground
the dilapidated supermarket had been languishing in the centre of Beringen Mine (fig
Like countless supermarkets all over the world
this building of roughly 50 x 50 m was the result of organic growth over a long period of time
It all started small toward the end of the 1960s with a neighbourhood store in building 3
This soon expanded and got hold of the entire neighborhood (fig
several load-bearing walls were opened up to expand the floor area of the supermarket (fig
They also worked on the flat roof of building 6
Several layers of thick insulation boards were placed on top of the original tar and gravel roof
which in turn were covered by a new layer of tar and gravel
All the skylights and ventilation holes of the old roof were covered up (fig
Now what happened that fateful night in August
The incident report released by the Federal Public Service Home Affairs gives the following factual account of the course of events
In one of the retail spaces of this complex building of roughly 2,500 m2
a fire started in the worst possible place
The initial seat of the fire was located near where the concrete vaults of the ceiling of the retail space at the front of the building (building 3) connect to the wooden roof structure of a 830 m2 extension (building 6) added later
The fire managed to get into that roof structure
steel beams with a repeating pattern of hexagonal holes—in the roof made it easy for the heat and the fire to advance through the ceiling toward the rear of the building
The back wall of the store was clad with chipboards (fig
The high temperature inside the ceiling initiated their thermal decomposition
The decomposition gases released through this process of thermal cracking or pyrolysis literally pulled the fire out of the ceiling at the back of the building
Marc Coenen offers profound insights into the conscious and unconscious processes that shape our actions on the fireground
the Beringen Fire and Rescue Service had to deal with fires inside the building three times; all of them turned out to be arson
I assumed that we were dealing once again with arson
since all utilities (electricity and gas) had been cut off a long time ago
All information pointed toward a ventilated fire development
After the fire at the front of the supermarket has been extinguished
The fumes just kept on flowing slowly from the building
there was another seat of fire inside the building
they reported that they had come upon a kitchen fire
My assumption was confirmed; this second fire was the reason why smoke keeps on coming out of the building
I sent in a third team via the back of the building
These colleagues of Heusden-Zolder were instructed to check whether there were any remaining seats of fire and
I received over the radio the message from the Saint Barbara Street team that they had extinguished the kitchen fire
a fire that seemed under control unexpectedly changed into a nightmare
Pitch black smoke dropped out of the ceiling
The building became shrouded in complete darkness
The smoke was extremely hot and ignites immediately
The teams in Coal Mine Lane and Saint Barbara Street scrambled to safety
with fire everywhere and flames higher than your knees
One colleague would escape the inferno but was severely burned
Let’s focus on how we process information and subsequently make decisions
To gain insight into the thought processes inside our brain
I turned to the Israeli-American psychologist Daniel Kahneman
This winner of the Nobel Prize coined the acronym “WYSIATI,” which stands for ‘What You See Is All There Is.” It is a combination of the two modes of thinking in our head:
System 1 contains all your automatic or unconscious mental processes
with little or no effort at all and no sense of voluntary control
automatic mental mechanisms are generating suggestions in the form of an endless stream of impressions
but the quality of the suggested ideas is far from splendid
as the whole system is riddled with intuitive biases or systematic prejudices
System 2 contains all the effortful mental activities that require attention and are disrupted when that attention is drawn away
Their operation is often associated with the subjective experience of agency
our conscious mental processes are born tired
One of their most important tasks is to monitor and maintain control of that endless stream of freewheeling impulses created by our experience system
Most of the suggestions are adopted with little or no modification
Only a few intentions and intuitions are suppressed
conscious mental processes let countless fallacies slip through the cracks
you probably intuitively responded that the ball must cost 10¢
If the ball costs 10¢ and the bat costs $1.00 more
conscious mental processes regularly slip up
When your experience system immediately provides a very logical-sounding answer
then your System 2 barely bothers to check it
but what has this got to do with firefighting
WYSIATI is also playing in your mind when you are plotting the strategy on a fireground
The ideal situation for making informed decisions is having all relevant information at your disposal
an overabundance of information only makes harder for you to know what precisely you should be looking at
all the data you have gathered are reliable
the case when you are planning to buy a new washing machine
The availability of information at an incident scene is completely different
crucial information is missing or the data at your disposal are wrong or incomplete
That is how everyone that night in Beringen ended up in the wrong type of incident
On the basis of the cues emitted by the fire
we assumed we were dealing with a ventilated fire development
the real problem was a structure fire in a flat roof
As I had passed the building only a moment before the emergency call was paged
I was led to believe that the fire had only just been lit
it became clear that at my time of passage
the fire was already burning for half an hour inside the building
A surveillance camera caught the first cues of fire already at 1:38 a.m
the fire load surpassed by far the average
as the interior finishing was made of an excessive amount of fiberboards and sandwich panels (fig
It is only a small step from this kind of information to deception
When you unleash a human brain on limited information or a sequence of isolated events
it will always recognize patterns and impose causal connections
That is why the most idiotic conspiracy theories sell worldwide like hotcakes
conspiracy theorists deliberately set fire to 33 phone masts in 2020
the outbreak of the coronavirus was not the consequence of the unhygienic practices in Wuhan’s Huanan seafood and wildlife market
but was due to the rollout of 5G mobile phone services in the Chinese province of Hubei
5G had not yet been rolled out in the Netherlands
I am of the opinion that narrative fallacy and situational awareness are two sides of the same coin
And that coin is situational influencing of our adaptive unconscious
the Predictive Coding Theory was formulated in neurology and cognitive psychology
Just as the stomach digests food or the heart pumps blood through the body
the brain’s job is to generate and to check predictions
are not about the future but about the present: what is happening in the outside world that explains the input that is now pouring in
Our brain manages an internal model or simulacrum of the reality around us that it is constantly updating by checking sensory and other input against the situation we are in
Our brain finds itself in the middle of a love triangle
It controls all our thoughts and actions from within the triangle:
we start to make sense of the environment we live in
concepts arise as statistical regularities or recognizable patterns
and to each one of them we humans have given a name: mother
From the start we also get to know and recognize the things that take place inside our body
A growling stomach signals it is time to eat
and I do not have to tell you what you have to do when your throat is dry
or the sense of the internal physiological condition of your body
does a lot more than signalling physiological needs like hunger and thirst
It also directs the behavior of firefighters on the fireground
you suddenly feel uncomfortable and decide to retrace your steps
although you cannot pinpoint what exactly is wrong
you are standing in the staircase of a burning building
For some unknown reason you do not cross with your team to the adjacent room that contains the seat of the fire that has to be extinguished
Then the ceiling of that room collapses and
you incorrectly recognize something as safe
Interoception can mislead you during interventions
You have recognized something subconsciously
your adaptive unconscious has (not) picked up on something threatening in the environment and translated it into a (gut) feeling
and even subliminally or under the radar of consciousness when your life is in danger
Then there is the third and final factor: memories of similar situations or
Everything we do and think arises from the combination of a (gut) feeling in a certain situation or context and prior experiences
From the neurological patterns initiated by these three factors
our associative brain continuously generates predictions or best guesses about the causes of these electrochemical signals
It is always checking and adjusting these predictions when necessary
Situational awareness creates the impression that we humans have everything under control with our conscious thinking
or at least that we can get it under control
Experiment after experiment shows that our conscious mind always lags behind
Our unconscious is already preparing each action or behaviour about 800 milliseconds in advance (almost a full second!) while the conscious decision is recorded only 350 milliseconds before the action
and our subjective experience of the conscious decision to act is little more than a sham decision
our conscious mind does a great job in hiding the fact that it misses the start over and over again by creating the illusion that it is at the origin of all our decisions and subsequent behavior
Often we do not know why we make certain choices or do certain things
if you put four identical pairs of nylon stockings in a row
40% of research participants will take the far-right pair
Should you ask them why they have chosen that particular pair of stockings
they will answer that those are more beautiful
psychologists are convinced that we make a decision or have an opinion on the basis of unconscious reasons
after which our conscious mind starts to rationalize that judgment and comes up with good reasons for it
The most striking difference between the conscious and unconscious mind is their processing capacity
where our consciousness stands out in a negative manner
The computational power of our conscious mind is 60 bits per second
That of the unconscious mind is no less than 200,000 times bigger than that of your conscious awareness: about 11.2 million bits per second
Now which Ipad do you prefer to use at an incident scene: A device where the data transfer in the working memory happens at the speed of 11.2 million or 60 bits per second
That is the Predictive Coding Theory in a nutshell
is unconsciously making predictions all the time at the incident scene regarding the situation he finds himself in
you can explain why so many firefighters have perished—and many more will perish—on a fireground with the following sensory cues:
Based on experience and the relatively safe impressions
we interpret those signals as a manageable fire of limited power in the growth or decay stage of a ventilated fire development
we have managed to extinguish such fires without any problem with our nozzle techniques
That is the prediction that our brain generates automatically
that light-gray smoke has to be assessed completely differently
Only after the intervention is over will you know whether your assessment of the intervention type was correct
We walk into such traps with our eyes wide open
like our Canadian colleagues did on January 21
An emergency call for a suspicious odor in a small block of flats goes bad
Cold smoke gases find an ignition source and set an entire residential block ablaze
What does this all mean for our intervention strategy
Recognizing something unconsciously or your first impression upon arriving at the incident scene compels you to decide
In the words of the American psychologist Gary Klein
our intervention strategy is based on a recognition-primed decision
This refers to a thought process that basically consists of an intuitive recognition on which only a minimal conscious check is conducted
my age starts to shimmer through.) The idea is that of all the incidents you have attended to
and those slides are stored in a mental slide loader
they form the unconscious mental background against which you consider the handling of the new incident
In response to the environment and based on your (gut) feeling and experience
a certain cluster of nerve cells in your brain begins to send signals to another cluster in a certain pattern
There are always several neural networks inside your brain competing for the upper hand
but ultimately one of these networks will gain the upper hand and formulate the prediction regarding the unfolding situation at the incident scene
is an unconscious or intuitive mental activity
That pattern recognition results in a strategy over which your conscious mind exerts only limited control
you consider whether or not that strategy will work
then the process of looking for an effective strategy comes to an end
although better strategies might be possible
because you have found a strategy that you know (or believe you know) will work
that intuitive thought process is clearly discernible
the fire engine leaves the fire station at 2:14 p.m
it concerns a fire in an indoor storeroom with a depth of 15 m that is located in a large hangar (25 m × 75 m) in which recreational boats are maintained and stored
■ Two minutes later
when the fire truck is approaching a roundabout at the rear of the hangar
the crew sees a thick layer of brownish-yellow smoke quietly flowing out the rear of the hangar
■ The warrant officer in the fire truck scales up to “medium fire.” An additional unit and the officer on duty are dispatched to the fireground
■ The fire truck arrives at the scene around 2:18 p.m
There is hardly any smoke; just a few patches of smoke are visible at the back of the hangar
A police officer informs the firefighters that there is a car burning in the back of the hangar
The warrant officer assesses the situation again
which only a few minutes ago was intuitively scaled up to a “medium fire,” is now downsized to a car fire by that same intuitive thought process
■ After the warrant officer has given the formal order
“explore and extinguish any fires,” four firefighters enter the hangar and the warrant officer starts his 360° size-up around the building
the warrant officer scales up to “big fire.” The entire hangar is ablaze and his three colleagues are still inside the building
Typical of this incident are the big differences between the cues picked up by the warrant officer when he and his colleagues were driving up to the fire and those picked up upon arrival on the fireground due to the pulsating fire in the indoor storeroom
the warrant officer assessed the sensory cues intuitively on the basis of experience and gut feeling
a series of consecutive but completely distinct WYSIATIs
The scaling up during the approach is no longer relevant when they have pulled up in front of the hangar and the incident is intuitively reduced to a car fire
That is exactly how intuitive thought processes work: they neglect ambiguities and suppress doubts
Central in the decision-making process stands the logical consistency of the narrative
and that is based on whatever information that happens to be available
even when the information is limited and flimsy
is the difference between the fire in De Punt and that of Beringen
that fire is precisely the opposite of my intervention
Beringen was one overextended WYSIATI that I was able to enrich with an ever-increasing amount of details
But that did not make the scenario more likely
from the beginning onward my assessment of the situation was completely flawed
What do we have to keep in mind at a fireground
our actions during incidents are directed by unconscious thought processes
everything revolves around situational influencing of the adaptive unconscious by cues from the environment
our associative brain automatically and unconsciously creates a prediction or a best guess
This results into a behavior or a strategy that our conscious mental processes barely check
That is particularly the case when that behavior or strategy appears to be logically sound
that behavior or strategy can be totally wrong—with all the tragic consequence this entails

Reusable plastic packaging and container supplier Schoeller Allibert is to begin work on a new Belgian production plant in Beringen
to which it will move from its existing location in Leopoldsburg
which includes a 6,500 sq.m production hall and 3,500 sq.m of outdoor storage space
which was designed by architectural firm Wastiau & Co
will be a model for all future Schoeller Allibert plants and includes substantial investment in the field of technology
The head of Schoeller Allibert’s innovation team
a testament to his “unshaken faith in the future of reusable plastic packaging” and the growth of the company
Schoeller Allibert brings a lot of innovation and know-how to Limburg,” said Gielen
“It will include one of the largest machines in the Benelux region
with a shot size of about 45kg,” he continued
which will be the company’s twelfth in Europe
and focus on larger products including the Big Box Maximus 850L and the plastic ClickPall
A spokesperson for the company said that while the development programme for the first year did not include automotive related products
it was a possibility beyond as Schoeller Allibert intended to quickly diversify the production line
Schoeller Allibert is expected to move into the new site next year
Earlier in June this year the company opened a facility in Zabrze, Poland, for supply to the central eastern European region as well as other parts of western Europe. That plant is using the EuroClick crate designed for the automotive industry

02/05/2025 OMRON Industrial Automation
a Swiss supplier of organic food raw materials and of sustainable
has commissioned one of Europe’s most advanced cocoa processing plants in Beringen in the canton of Schaffhausen in spring 2022
The fundamental decision to transfer the processing of its organic cocoa beans from external contract processors abroad to Switzerland paved the way for the groundbreaking project
which was implemented with equipment from the Bühler Group as a system supplier
which was designed in close collaboration and coordination with the PRONATEC team
is one of the most advanced systems installed worldwide
Its advantages clearly lie in the consistently high quality of the roasting and grinding of the cocoa beans into cocoa mass and the further processing into cocoa powder and butter.
"The efficiency of the plant at the Swiss site
as well as the uncompromising design for 100% organic certification
was a priority for PRONATEC from the very beginning," says Joachim Essig
Head of Sales Cocoa & Malt at Bühler
and full traceability were already important topics in the initial discussions in mid-2018
as were gentle handling of the raw materials
The processes are continuously monitored in the control room
and the cocoa products produced are also continuously tested for quality in the company's own laboratory
this real-time controlling ensures the taste quality of its products
but it also has a major impact on the energy efficiency of the plant," says Stefan Linder
"PRONATEC had high requirements for the plant in terms of automation and energy efficiency
meeting these requirements was exciting and a learning curve
all our customers benefit from the new insights."
PRONATEC has been distributing fair-trade and sustainably produced products for the global food industry and grocery trade
all with a variety of organic and fair-trade certifications
“PRONATEC has been providing Swiss chocolate made from organically grown and fair-trade cocoa beans since 1996
and was the first company in the world to offer organic and Fairtrade certified chocolate,” says David Yersin
we are the first company in Switzerland to produce all three organic cocoa semi-finished products – cocoa mass
It is very important that we can maintain proven flavor profiles that we have developed over the years
the new roaster also gives us the opportunity to develop new products
The fact that we were able to conduct tests in advance at Bühler’s Application and Training Center was a great help in our decision-making process
The proximity to Bühler was a stroke of luck
We were and are glad to have a partner at our side just 30 minutes away."
The mandatory requirements for energy efficiency were taken into consideration in the plant design and implementation
emissions were considered from the very beginning of the planning process in order to be able to meet not only all safety requirements but also the highest demands in terms of environmental compatibility
a state-of-the-art exhaust air after-treatment system has been installed to prevent unpleasant odors.
For David Yersin it was clear from the outset where the plant was to be built and with whom
"We are a Swiss company that will produce in Switzerland
only Bühler came into question for me," says Yersin with conviction.?Two core elements of the plant - the Tornado nib roaster and a Nova mill - will be manufactured by Bühler in Appenzell
which suited PRONATEC's philosophy in terms of quality and locality
the plant was a big investment," says David Yersin
and the fact that we produce regionally is becoming more and more important to many of our customers
Bühler has been active in the cocoa segment for over 50 years and has been continuously expanding its market leadership in this field ever since.
The Beringen plant is a relatively small facility for Bühler
but this does not make it any less interesting or important
there is also the fact that the plant is located in Switzerland
which means that maximum efficiency is required of it so that the Beringen production site can be successful," says Daniel Egy
Head of Business Unit Chocolate & Coffee at Bühler

Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) threw a tantrum at Exact Cross in Belgium yesterday when he stamped on a rival’s bike
resulting in his disqualification from the race
Iserbyt later said his actions did not belong in racing and though he apologised to all involved
he did not name check the rider who he had targeted; Ryan Kamp (Alpecin-Deceuninck)
when Kamp was getting up off the ground he saw what Iserbyt had done – walking on his bike and then deliberately stamping on it
grabbed Belgian champion Iserbyt and delayed him for a few seconds as he remonstrated with him
“I understand the decision of the jury to DSQ me today in Beringen
My acts after the hard crash were made in a rage of anger and don’t belong in this sport,” Iserbyt said on X after the race
Now I’ll focus on the positive things and look forward to the next races.”
The duo were close to the front of the race on the fifth lap of eight when they tangled coming down a muddy descent
falling at the same spot and the bikes becoming entangled
Iserbyt was obviously irate at being held up and decided to walk on Kamp’s bike and then stamp on the area of the rear mech
which force Kamp to walk to the pits to get a new bike
an official stopped him on lap six to inform him he was disqualified
Here’s the reason Eli Iserbyt was disqualified from Exact Cross round 1 in Beringen today 😳 pic.twitter.com/EoajX4VHHO
