Local resident Khalid was roused by the noise
‘We were still asleep when we heard the explosion
At first we thought it was a gas explosion,’ he told VRT
especially because we live in a fairly quiet street
‘We searched the area immediately after the incident
We have not yet identified a possible suspect.’ Forensic scientists and the army bomb squad DOVO attended the scene during the night as part of the investigation
The police are now investigating the explosion
‘We will try to identify the perpetrator and attempt to establish the context of this incident,’ he said
an explosion damaged a front door in the district of Deurne
‘It is far too early to say whether there is a link between the two explosions
First we are going to look at both cases individually
it will surface during the investigation.’

CategoriesCategoriesEnglishGENERAL, SOCIETYSeven thousand people eat together in Antwerp
Celebrate Easter together, enjoy an iftar meal or just enjoy a meal together. It was all possible on Sunday at a table of exactly 2,011 meters long, which immediately set a new Belgian record for the longest table.
The participants could find their spot from 7 p.m., and at 8 p.m., the drummers and the ‘giants’ from Borgerhout announced dinner time. After sunset, at 8:14 p.m., the meal started because then the fasting day for Muslims was over.

Philip Metten presents his second solo exhibition at Zeno X Gallery
The exhibition offers an overview of the works Metten created in recent years and gives an insight into the different stages he went through
He experimented with different materials and media
ranging from paper collages to wall sculptures in papier-mâché and paintings
In the first space, an aluminium profile acts both as a zero point and as a thread that connects the various works. This scenographic intervention is characteristic of Philip Metten’s work method: he often sets out a certain system
creating more room for interpretation in the process
he designed a sculpture that could also be used freely as the scenography for a group exhibition at Extra City Kunsthal
Aluminium is ubiquitous in Metten’s architectural practice: the material plays a prominent role in the interior of the ESSEN restaurant in Borgerhout and also recurs as the ‘skeleton’ of his mobile CINEMA
Aluminium is often employed to demarcate a space or to create a spatial drawing
The intervention in the gallery is concise but impactful
The aluminium profile serves as a plinth and emphasizes the sculptural rather than the pictorial qualities of the collages and paintings
The paintings are visually related to Metten’s paper collages and are constructed in a similar way
Metten cuts up painted pieces of linen canvas which he then stitches together layer by layer
The superposition of layers turn the paintings simultaneously into reliefs
What stands out in these paintings is the fact that Metten stays true to the use of colour in his works on paper
The pastel colours refer to the millimetre paper used to make technical drawings
of which the artist has amassed a large collection
Metten evokes the stitched seams by scratching the canvas with a needle and filling in the grooves with paint
PKC/Vertom have clinched their 15th European Championship title
defeating Belgian champions Borgerhout/Groen-Wit 15-28 in the final held at the Casal Vistoso Sports Complex in Lisbon
This victory marks their third consecutive Champions League title
has now won the last three editions of the Champions League (successor to the European Cup)
This victory continues a fantastic start to February for the reigning Dutch champions
They recently secured a narrow 18-17 victory against HKC/Creon Kozijnen in the Kenonz Korfball League
a win that coincided with the club’s 90th anniversary celebrations and their current 5th place ranking
Bec Korfball Club from England secured the bronze medal with a hard-fought 20-19 victory over Nucleo Corfebol Benfica from Portugal
Bec held the lead throughout much of the match
taking a narrow 7-6 advantage at the end of the first period
They maintained their edge into the third period
Benfica mounted a stunning comeback between the 31st and 37th minutes
scoring five unanswered goals to close the gap to just one point (18-17)
This set up a pulsating finale with only three minutes remaining
The closing moments of the game saw both teams trading goals
it was Bec who held their nerve and emerged victorious
securing their first European medal in modern times
Rachel Turner and Joe Bedford shone brightly
sharing the top goal-scoring accolade with five goals apiece
The battle for 5th place in the IKF Korfball Champions League featured two German clubs
saw TuS Schildgen take a commanding lead with a 21-14 victory over SG Pegasus
TuS Schildgen further solidified their position with an 18-11 win
TuS Schildgen demonstrated a strong and consistent performance
ultimately securing 5th place in the tournament
including standout performances from Thomas Freund (7 goals)
The IKF Korfball Champions League Final was a success thanks to the hard work and dedication of the organisers
Without their contributions this event would not have been possible

Some 28,000 new Dutch titles are published yearly in Holland and Flanders
and about 105,000 Dutch titles permanently available
This means the Dutch book industry requires an army of creative professionals to steer a course of innovation
The Flemish book industry’s engagement with other creative and media industries is a strategic choice for economic growth
Here are some examples that illustrate why and how we approach the challenges of migration to digital reading and publishing
and creation of new partnerships within creative industries
As initiator of the OCI (Flanders Creative Industries Platform) – part of Flanders DC District of Creativity (the organization set up by the Flemish Government for support on the creative industries) – Boek.be is committed to supporting innovation in the Flemish book industry
The OCI platform represents 12 creative branches: architecture
Many of these mentioned branches increasingly overlap and converge nowadays
The OCI platform has three goals for bringing these sectors together: 1) to stimulate cooperation between the different branches
2) to encourage innovation within the global creative industries
3) to structure Flemish government support for creative industries
This collaborative and innovative strategy
which includes a roadmap presented to the Flemish government
has resulted in practical applications within the Flemish book industry
One of the many challenges for Flemish publishers in a developed digital age is to bridge the gap between difference creative industries
Collaboration between publishers results in high-quality products
Participation in 360-degree projects generates new consumer groups
Co-creation by converging media invites to new partnerships in creative business
Flanders does translate this into effective practice
The projects below illustrate how joining forces results in many projects based on cooperation
The four-year project, Publisher of the Future, financially powered by IWT (a governmental organization stimulating innovation and technology) is a partnership between Boek.be and iMinds
iMinds MultiMediaLab is a research and development division at the University of Ghent
and iMinds SMIT is a research center for Studies on Media
Information and Telecommunication at the University of Brussels
have joined forces within the Publisher of the Future project
This project provides Flemish publishers with research on new cross-media and transmedia concepts
Publisher of the Future is a demand-driven project
and its goals include analyzing opportunities of digital publishing
defining the needs and priorities of the Flemish publishers
facilitating the development of innovative and enriched ebooks
and initiating matchmaking between publishers and technology partners
26 publishers and 6 ICT partners participate in this project
the completed projects and research reports will be shared with all Flemish publishers
the project will focus on hybrid publishing
Results will be shared at various conferences
In order to increase collaboration between publishers and audio visual producers, Flanders DC organizes workshops, bootcamps, coaching processes and networking events. In 2013, Boek.be organized the first Converging Media Conference
About 40 speakers from different branches and industries (movies
education) together with researchers from different knowledge centers and universities inspired 200 participants by focusing on challenges and opportunities and converting innovative ideas into commercially viable propositions
as well as looking for collaborative opportunities
are key steps toward reshaping the future of the book industry
The Converging Media Conference will have a sequel in autumn 2014
with a focus on gaming and innovative cross-media content
In 2013, Boek.be and Publisher of the Future organized two Creative Book Labs
which offered hands-on sessions open to publishers
Presentations highlighted new forms of storytelling
In June 2014 a Development Lab will be organized
a team of mentors will help the participants build their digital publishing ideas into a technically strong concepts
supported by solid business models and distribution strategies
The highlight of the lab is a pitch session
when the teams present their projects to a jury
receiving useful feedback on the creative and business potential of their concept
the jury will hand out an award to the most innovative and future proof book project
Because Belgium is a small country with limited resources
interdisciplinary collaboration and creativity are key to survival
Flemish publishers excel in various fields
For educational publishers integrating interactivity
and connecting serious gaming are both priorities and challenges
Many Flemish publishers take 360-degree approach to their content
which means more collaboration across media industries
The Flemish government encourages and supports innovation through Flanders DC (coordinating the cultural industry) through IWT (funding support)
through iMinds (research & development)
and Flanders Investment and Trade (expanding & export)
The results of these multiple efforts accelerate innovation in the Flemish book industry and aim to put Flanders on the map when it comes to creativity
as publishers embrace advanced tools and techniques to generate new content formats
the creation of compelling content remains undoubtedly key to any future proof success
In 2016, the Netherlands and Flanders will be joint Guests of Honour at Frankfurt Book Fair
A challenging opportunity for the Flemish Book Industry offering fresh innovative perspectives and stimulating new partnerships
Annemie Speybrouck is Project Manager for Publisher of the Future at Boek.be
Guest contributors to Publishing Perspectives have diverse backgrounds in publishing
They live across the globe and bring unique
