Clarendon native Chenee Morris-Thomas says she drew inspiration to launch her skincare line from her quest to find natural and effective products for her baby’s sensitive skin
She said that personal need sparked a passion to create a range of natural skincare products that would also benefit other families seeking gentle and nourishing solutions for their skin
“ZaNatural Organics started after I became a mother
I wasn’t happy that most of the products I was finding were imported
I just wasn’t happy with putting on my baby’s skin,” said Morris-Thomas
who operates out of Longville Park in Clarendon
Morris-Thomas recently participated in the ‘Earn ‘N Share’ expo
which provided a platform for local entrepreneurs
and teachers to display their diverse range of goods and products
and my daughter’s first name is Zana-Leah
so I always said that if I was going to launch a business
so [adding natural] was a no-brainer,” she explained
Thomas’ dissatisfaction with available products only intensified
prompting her to expand the scope of ZaNatural beyond infant care
“Initially we started out as a children’s brand
it has grown where the family loves it so much that most of my customers are the older people
because a little goes a long way,” Morris-Thomas told The Gleaner
The entrepreneur cited an overwhelmingly positive feedback to her products
which she attributes to a growing consumer trust in natural ingredient products
adding that more consumers are seeking chemical-free alternatives for their skincare needs
“It’s the fact that it’s natural and they can trust what they’re putting on their skin
persons who have had issues like eczema on their scalp
they were happy to get the shampoo and the conditioner,” she said
ZaNatural provides a diverse array of products
including a growth oil and body-care essentials
boasts a castor oil-base infused with nourishing elements such as vitamin E oil
and tea tree oil for its anti-inflammatory properties
it predominantly features olive oil and sunflower oil
with a touch of rosehip oil known for its skin-rejuvenating antioxidants
promises enduring hydration without succumbing to heat
“Our cocoa butter has a higher fat content
so it’s more for geared towards persons with dry skin
and just in case persons don’t want to commit to buying the larger sizes
shea butter and our cocoa butter – pocket size
Morris-Thomas noted a tendency for mothers to neglect their own self-care while prioritising their children’s needs
a facial and skin-care line specifically designed for mothers
although its popularity has extended to a broader customer base
leveraging neem’s antioxidant-rich properties beneficial for the skin
moisturiser (suitable for both skin and facial use)
She shared that the Naomi line was named in honour of her best friend
“In the Bible there’s Ruth and Naomi
I thought it would be good to pay homage to her by naming the line Naomi.”
Despite the glamour of a flourishing business
Morris-Thomas said entrepreneurship is no easy feat
One specific challenge she highlighted is the issue of storage and packaging in Jamaica
but she is actively working to address this challenge and find solutions to overcome it
that she finds motivation in the positive feedback from satisfied clients who express gratitude for her products’ impact on their skin
and even their children’s well-being
compels her to persevere despite the obstacles

CHÊNÉE, Belgium — All the traces of a devastating 2021 flood have gone from this tranquil market square in Belgium’s east
But public resentment around how authorities were slow to handle the disaster and its destruction that claimed nearly 40 lives across the region is still fresh in the minds of voters
Jacqueline, a local browsing the market in the village of Chênée, was weighing who to vote for in Belgium’s triple election on June 9, when Belgians elect new national, regional and European Parliament members.
referring to the Francophone center-left Socialists (PS) who have ruled Liège for over 50 years
That's not good news for Wallonia's most-prominent politician
While most mainstream parties in Europe face far-right challengers, the pressure on the PS and Magnette in the past decade has come from the left. The far-left Workers’ Party (PTB) is projected to rival the PS in Belgium's federal parliament, according to POLITICO’s Poll of Polls
the PTB is polling ahead of the Socialists
The Belgian state's power is divided between a federal government
Wallonia and Brussels — handling issues like employment or mobility and the three Flemish
French-speaking and German communities handling issues such as education
French speakers most often vote for French-speaking parties only
as traditional parties have split into Flemish and French-speaking parties decades ago to cater to their own regions
The Socialists have been in power in Wallonia almost uninterrupted since the 1980s
the party is facing an uphill battle to remain Belgium's biggest French-speaking party
the PTB had put pressure on the Socialists from the left of the spectrum
In the weeks leading up to the June 9 election
that has left the PS vulnerable to other challenges
with the liberal Reformist Movement (MR) catching up in national polling
PS and MR are now polling neck-and-neck with more than 20 percent of the French-speaking vote
and the centrist Les Engagés has surged into third place with a projected 17 percent of that vote.
There’s a broader political offer,” said Sabine Roberty
a PS member of parliament who was handing out campaign leaflets at Chênée's market in mid-May.
the PS is fighting to maintain its position as political heavyweight
far-right Vlaams Belang is projected to become the biggest party — but the party has been excluded from governing by other parties due to its extreme agenda
Flemish and Francophone parties gather to form coalitions to run the country
Finding a majority for a national government is expected to take months
The country already holds the world record in that regard
after going 541 days without a government in 2010-2011 when it faced a similar divide
a June 9 victory could propel him to the country's top job; a loss could cause irreparable damage to his ambitions
Currently the mayor of Charleroi — a city best known to air travelers as a low-cost airline hub — Magnette
has bigger and brighter dreams: He wants to become Belgium’s next prime minister.
Last time around, Magnette's PS was the first party in Wallonia and the third overall in Belgium
but Alexander De Croo overtook him in the race for Belgium's top job
Cambridge-educated Magnette faces arguably an even more difficult path to the throne.
The far-left PTB "is an unquestionable electoral competitor for the Socialist Party in the segment that tends to vote most socialist: the salaried working classes,” said Pascal Delwit
professor of political science at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
What makes it tricky is that the two parties covet the same voters.

Nathalie knows she will cast her vote for a left-leaning party
But she is still undecided about which one.
But nothing has ever changed” under its leadership
Nathalie has worked for Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize for 33 years
She was one of the workers affected by social upheaval when the company franchised all of its stores
Both Magnette and the PTB's charismatic president
came to meet Delhaize's unions to see what they "could do to help," she said
"Raoul," as people in Chênée call Hedebouw, is the face of the Workers’ Party across Belgium and a native of Liège. Portraying himself as a man of the people, he loves to “boire un pot” — have a drink — in one of the numerous Liège cafés.
so he also has to run a campaign that takes that into account.”
rooted in disillusionment with Wallonia's leading class
is a powerful message for Hedebouw and his PTB
“The PS promises the left during the campaign and it ends up being the right in government,” said David Pestieau
the PTB’s political director. “We are ready to join a government
but not to throw away our principles,” he added
the PS is deeply engrained in Belgium's federal
regional and local levels of government and across its public institutions
That history is facing a reckoning with frustrated voters.

A Christmas party held at Port Royal was where Oshane Robinson met Chenee Russell
“We were at the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) Christmas party in 2016,” Oshane informs Tuesday Style Vows (TSV)
revealing the immediate connection he felt with her
The two developed a friendship that would over time blossom into love
The proposal came three years after their initial encounter and took place at the Atlanta Botanical Garden after a carefully orchestrated mini vacay that included a botanical show
“We went to the garden and were headed towards the rainforest section when I heard ‘our song’ On Day One being sung,” Chenee relates
“… what followed remains a blur… in fact
I completely forgot all that I was told to do because I was so nervous… I do
The initial date of August 23 was changed to December 27
The sound of When God Made Youby Newsong and Natalie Grant signalled the bride’s arrival at the University of the West Indies Chapel at Mona
Chenee was picture-perfect in a white Maggie Sottero strapless mermaid beaded gown from Bliss Bridal
Her all-white cascading bouquet of orchids
roses and baby’s breath completed the flawless look
She was escorted to her bridegroom who was smartly attired in a three-piece dark emerald green suit from Spencer’s Tailoring by her mum Marlene Payton
The rustic-themed celebration took place on the roof at Eden Gardens Wellness Resort & Spa

Handling the formalities was Ryan Dixon who did a fantastic job entertaining the guests and keeping the energy levels high
The first dance to I Found Love by BeBe and CeCe Winans and Savage Love by Jason Derulo & Jawsh 685 had guests laughing uncontrollably when Chenee accidentally twisted Oshane’s hand (recent surgery had been done on that hand and had threatened to once again postpone the ceremony)
MC Ryan Dixon hosted a clash between the newly-weds where they were asked to select songs that could be used to answer specific questions
The evening continued with the unveiling of the two-tiered vanilla and fruitcake by Forever Sweet Ja and dinner catered by Eden Gardens Wellness Resort and Spa

says discussions are under way to establish another shelter for victims of human trafficking
but it can only accommodate female victims
we are looking at a second shelter to accommodate male victims,” she said
Russell Robinson pointed out that the establishment of the second shelter
will place the country on a better path of improving its ranking as it relates to human trafficking
Jamaica was ranked at Tier Two in the 2020 Trafficking in Persons Report
Russell Robinson said Jamaica is aiming for Tier 1 ranking on the United States Department of State ranking on Human Trafficking
The Department’s Trafficking in Persons report states that “the Government of Jamaica does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however
The Government demonstrated increasing efforts compared to the previous reporting period; therefore
most of the persons have been children below the age of 18 years old
and most forms of trafficking we are seeing are sexual trafficking or sexual exploitation
but not at the same rate as the females… so I think the ratio as it stands now is possibly six to four out of 10 for females,” she said
Russell Robinson explained that when victims are rescued
protection services are coordinated for the victim
if a victim is rescued we have to provide accommodation
If it is that the person needs accommodation
because sometimes based on the nature of the case they cannot go back home for security reasons and so we provide them with accommodation
and this is why the shelter is very important,” she said
“We also provide them with counselling services
because as you would imagine they would have gone through a traumatic experience and so we employ the services of the victim services division under the Ministry of Justice for counselling and if it involves a child
we have to engage the Child Protection and Family Services Agency to also step in and provide counselling and sometimes accommodation for the child
We also provide medical assistance and this is why we employ a multiagency approach,” Ms

Manager of the Trafficking in Persons Secretariat
host of the discussion programme ‘Get The Facts,’ to share the profile of persons who are primarily affected by human trafficking
and the process involved in rescuing victims
We bring you an excerpt of their interview
Parents and guardians are being encouraged to monitor the online activities of children to protect them from becoming victims of human trafficking
The call came from Manager of the Trafficking in Persons Secretariat
She noted that the majority of trafficking victims identified by the National Task Force Against Trafficking in Persons (NATFATIP) are children
“Children are now spending more time online due to the pandemic
so parents and guardians must monitor their activities because traffickers are also occupying the online space seeking to target children,” she said
She noted that perpetrators may pose as online friends or potential employers to lure children
so they should not meet up with strangers they have met online
“We are also encouraging parents and schools to educate children about trafficking in persons and how to protect themselves from becoming potential victims
Tell your children not to accept online friend requests from strangers and not to share information about themselves
ensure that you are aware of your child’s whereabouts and planned outings,” Mrs
“Everything is not as it seems online; you have persons posing as someone they are not (Catfishing) to attract unknowing users for trafficking and other ill-intents
so children have to be very careful navigating the online space,” she added
Russell-Robinson also took the opportunity to invite schools to contact the NATFATIP to schedule sensitisation sessions
“In order to prevent trafficking in persons
NATFATIP focuses on public education efforts
This includes multimedia campaigns and initiatives such as establishing Anti-Trafficking in Persons Clubs within secondary schools across the island
and we are welcoming more schools to partner with us on this initiative,” she said
The Ministry of National Security (MNS) National Task Force Against Trafficking in Persons (NATFATIP) says that the recent amendments to the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Act signals its intent to reduce trafficking in persons locally
MNS Trafficking in Persons Secretariat Manager
said that among the amendments made earlier this year is that the penalty of convicted persons facing a fine only under the Act was removed
now a person convicted of trafficking can only be imprisoned or imprisoned and fined
that amendment was made this year,” she explained
this is a part of the Government’s measures to prevent and combat trafficking in persons
“We believe that trafficking is a dire crime
it has a psychological impact on the victims [whose] lives can be destroyed
and it falls under transnational organised crime
We believe that to reflect the nature of this crime
a fine alone is not sending a signal to persons that this is a type of crime that we need to get rid of from our shores,” she said
She also added that the amendments reflected international standards and best practices
“We have reviewed the laws regionally and internationally and this is the nature of their fines for trafficking in persons
with most laws it is imprisonment or imprisonment and a fine
which is paid to the victim included in the Act as well,” she noted
The TIP Act was enacted in 2007 to prescribe measures to prevent and combat trafficking in persons
to enable a judge to try trafficking offences without a jury
Since the formation of the Jamaica Constabulary Force Anti-Trafficking in Persons Unit in 2006
some 108 victims have been identified and rescued up to July this year
Sixty-five victims were under the age of 18 years with females being particularly vulnerable to exploitation
The NATFATIP was established in June 2005 as a multi-agency approach to enhance national capacity and to develop and implement Jamaica’s legislative
institutional and operational response for combatting trafficking in persons
The National Task Force Against Trafficking in Persons (NATFATIP) is seeking to strengthen collaboration with schools to reduce the number of persons who fall victim to human trafficking
“We are inviting schools to partner with the NATFATIP because we find that most victims of trafficking are children,” said Manager
“NATFATIP address the three Ps – ‘Prevention
the preventative aspect is our focus in schools and is exercised through public education efforts
These include multimedia campaigns and initiatives such as Anti-Trafficking in Persons Clubs within secondary schools across the island,” she noted
Russell Robinson informed that there are about 20 schools across the island where clubs initiatives have been set up to sensitise students
teachers and parents about trafficking and the task force is actively working with the Ministry of Education
and Information to get more institutions on board
The schools that already have clubs include Port Antonio High in Portland
Trelawny; Dunoon Technical High and Vauxhall High
Kingston; and Marcus Garvey Technical High
Russell Robinson said that the NATFATIP is willing to visit schools regardless of their geographical location or facilitate online sensitisation sessions given the restrictions on face-to-face learning
She noted that such partnerships are critical in effectively tackling human trafficking
“The Government alone cannot curb trafficking
It is a whole-of-country approach because everyone is vulnerable to trafficking
so we are imploring schools to partner with us,” she said

The National Task Force Against Trafficking in Persons (NATFATIP)
is reinforcing its commitment to tackle the issue of trafficking in persons
Speaking at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’ on Tuesday
said that the NATFATIP is consistently working on the three Ps – ‘Prevention
Protection and Prosecution’ – to reduce incidents of trafficking in persons locally
we have rescued over 100 victims since 2010 and convicted eight traffickers within the courts
We have trained judges in terms of trafficking in persons laws and procedures
Suppression and Punishment) law was enacted in Jamaica and has since been amended three times – 2013
Russell Robinson also told JIS News that the NATFATIP’s work is centred around protecting victims of trafficking
“We have a trafficking in persons government-operated centre for victims of trafficking
We have also focused on reintegration assistance
immigration assistance and other extracurricular skills
which is offered by the Victim Services Division as well as the Child Protection and Family Services Agency
that are all entities of the NAFTATIP,” she explained
The preventative aspect of the Trafficking in Persons Secretariat’s work focuses on public education efforts that include multimedia campaigns and initiatives such as Anti-Trafficking in Persons Clubs within secondary schools across the island

to assess how can the Government and other stakeholders help victims to reintegrate into society and to assist victims of trafficking
so it is best to get first-hand information from victims on how we can assist them and if our guidelines and policies are up to standard and efficient to assist victims,” she explained
The panel of speakers will include Sub Officer in Charge of the Anti-TIP (Vice Squad)
Detective Inspector Kemisha Gordon; Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions
Sharon Millwood Moore; TIP Ambassador and Survivor of Human Trafficking
The virtual session will be streamed on the social media platforms (Twitter
Detective Inspector Gordon appealed to Jamaicans to work with the various Government stakeholders to challenge the issue of human trafficking locally
“We need an all-hands-on deck approach if we are going to put a dent in this type of offence that occurs on our shores
I am urging Jamaicans to get in the know; trafficking does not require transportation – a person can be trafficked without being moved from their home,” she noted
Spot them and stop them and help us to stop trafficking by reporting these incidents,” she urged

The Ministry of National Security (MNS) National Task Force Against Trafficking in Persons (NATFATIP) says that the reintegration of victims of trafficking into society is a crucial aspect of the Task Force’s mandate
The NATFATIP was established in June 2005 as a multi-agency approach to enhance national capacity and develop and implement Jamaica’s legislative
Speaking at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank session held on Tuesday (July 20)
said that due to the psychological impact of trafficking in persons on victims
NATFATIP sees it as a priority to provide support for this vulnerable group
“After you have come out of a life of trafficking in persons
you are traumatised and you will need the assistance of persons
including your family members and government stakeholders
to help you to get back to a normal life,” she explained
Victim Services Division as well as the Child Protection and Family Services Agency
as some victims suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a host of other medical conditions
we keep in touch with persons as they recover from the incidents of human trafficking,” she said
Mrs Russell-Robinson said also that NATFATIP offers support through assistance with education expenses
“[Regardless of] the circumstances that would have led persons into a life of trafficking
we want to ensure that we prevent them from getting back into those situations.” The Task Force even helps them to find jobs
as some people end up in trafficking in persons by responding to a job advertisement
“We know that most times persons end up in trafficking due to dire situations and dire needs,” she explained
The Manager of the Trafficking in Persons Secretariat also offers reintegration assistance to victims who are not Jamaicans but who have been rescued from trafficking in persons locally
we help them to get safely repatriated to their country at our expense
and if a person is not in possession of identification documents
we help them to get back those documents,” she explained
Mrs Russell-Robinson revealed that more than 30 per cent of victims of trafficking in persons are not Jamaican citizens
The MNS will be hosting a week of activities under the global theme
“Victims’ Voices Lead the Way” to commemorate the World Day against Trafficking in Persons 2021 on July 30
The week of activities begin on Sunday (July 25) with a church service
During the week there will be sensitisation sessions with hotel employees and radio and television interviews

It was hard not to be out of breath watching the Russian Imperial Ballet’s flamboyant interpretation of Don Quixote at Crown Theatre
With their myriad of acrobatic feats – one handed lifts
fish dives and countless pirouettes – there was no questioning the athleticism of the company
Don Quixote performed by the Russian Imperial Ballet was a production full of colour and flamboyancy
From the moment Daniil Kolmin sauntered onto the stage as Don Quixote
with Denys Simon as Sancho Panza by his side
audiences were consumed by the humorous tale unfolding before them
The stars of the night though were Lina Seveliova and Nariman Bekzhanov
who danced the parts of star-crossed lovers Kitri and Basilio
The two came onto the stage with vigour and tenacity – and they didn’t let up until the final curtain dropped
Seveliova made audiences’ heads spin as she executed one turn after another with near flawless precision
If she wasn’t turning she was being lifted above the head of Bekzhanov - who carried out the role of Basilio with cheeky
It was easy to get lost in the excitement of the swirling toreador capes
Spanish skirts and fans – not to mention the enthusiastic yells from the corps
Founded in 1994 by Bolshoi Theatre soloist Gediminas Taranda
the Russian Imperial Ballet has developed a reputation for perfection – which was why it was disappointing at times to see imperfection among the corps
Perhaps expectations were too high before the show – but from a company of such high standard I would not expect to be able to notice arms out of place and positional errors
the talent of the company cannot be denied
Their energy did not falter throughout the three acts – finishing the night with an array of party tricks that left theatre-goers amazed
