Jean-Claude Van Damme is reportedly the subject of criminal charges in Romania over allegations that he knowingly engaged in sexual relations with women trafficked by a criminal group
The 64-year-old action star, known for his performances in Street Fighter and Double Impact
is accused of receiving five Romanian women as a “gift” from a group of traffickers while in Cannes
According to a report by the local CNN affiliate Antena 3
a criminal complaint has been filed with the Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT)
The Independent has approached Van Damme’s representatives and DIICOT for comment
DIICOT launched their investigation after a woman allegedly witnessed the incident at an event organized by Van Damme in Cannes and shared what she had seen with prosecutors
Cuculis added that “the person who received those benefits knew their condition,” and that the women "were in a state of vulnerability
with the suspicion that they were exploited within the meaning of Article 182 of the Criminal Code."
Cuculis told Antena 3 that the incident is part of a larger investigation into human trafficking and the trafficking of minors that has been carried out since 2020 by the Romanian Prosecutor's Office
The outlet also reports that as the incident occurred in Cannes
France’s High Court of Cassation will have to authorize criminal proceedings before the suspects identified in the case can be summoned to Romania to give statements
Van Damme has been a mainstream action star since getting his break as the lead in the martial arts film Bloodsport in 1988.
His more recent roles include playing the villain in The Expendables 2 in 2012 and providing voice work for the 2022 family film Minions: The Rise of Gru
In 2021, a director for the sitcom Friends said Van Damme was “unprepared and arrogant” during his guest appearance on the show.
He starred as himself in the second season episode “The One After the Super Bowl,” in which he was romantically pursued by both Monica (Courteney Cox) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston)
While he hasn’t responded to director Michael Lembeck’s comments, Van Damme told the New York Post in 2023 that he was “ashamed” of his acting in the episode.
“My acting is so bad. I look so like a ham. Like, ‘Hey, girls.’ […] It’s like, I’m ashamed of myself,” said Van Damme. “So then I was on the set, and those girls, they go and they kiss me and they kiss me on the lips. I didn’t know what to do, how to do … It was strange. They were very nice.”
He added he knew little about the hit sitcom, saying: “I didn’t know much about the show. So when I go to the show, I see those two beautiful girls and they say this is the hottest show right now in the world. So I was very glad.”

A criminal allegation has been filed in Romania against actor Jean-Claude Van Damme
A woman filed the allegation with the Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) naming the 64-year-old Belgian film star
he was given five women trafficked from Romania
does not allege any personal contact with Van Damme but links the actor to alleged victims who were taken to an event in Cannes
people can lodge a criminal allegation without being the alleged victim in the case
Newsweek, which has obtained a copy of the allegation, sought comment from Van Damme on Instagram and X, formerly Twitter
The case highlights the international scope of alleged trafficking networks
Romanian authorities are now tasked with verifying the claims and locating the five women
she includes extracts from a deposition made by a woman whom Newsweek will identify by the initials L.D
made a written deposition to a general prosecutor's office in Iași
as part of a larger investigation into sex trafficking
alleges that a Romanian businessman brought her and two other women she knew
to Cannes in southern France to work as models
they discovered that it wasn't the Cannes film festival
but a smaller festival partly organized by a Romanian fashion TV executive and which included Van Damme
alleged that the five women she didn't know were given to Van Damme as a gift from the manager who had brought them to the festival
One of her managers at the Cannes event told her that she was lucky that she had special protection and didn't have to do such things
She complained that they weren't given enough food, only small amounts from McDonald's
and that occasionally they would go to dinner with their boss' clients but this wasn't enough food either
told Newsweek that his client is "one of the victims in another case of child trafficking and prostitution in Iași
"[L.D] saw directly that five girls Van Damme took to his hotel room," he alleged
"We are trying to find those girls to make a complaint and speak out about what happened in Cannes," he said
The fate of the criminal allegation will depend on whether police can locate the five women who were allegedly taken to Van Damme's room
Update 4/9/2025: This article was updated to clarify details of the criminal allegation
Newsweek is committed to challenging conventional wisdom and finding connections in the search for common ground

Jean-Claude Van Damme has denied accusations he knowingly engaged in sexual relations with women trafficked by a criminal group
The action film star, whose credits include Street Fighter and Bloodsport, has spoken out after reportedly finding himself the subject of criminal charges in Romania over the claims

Former bodybuilder Van Damme made his big break into action films in the 1980s, and led cult martial arts film Bloodsport in 1988. His other credits include Kickboxer
he has played a villainous role in The Expendables 2 and provided voice work for the 2022 family film Minions: The Rise of Gru
In 2021, a director for the sitcom Friends said Van Damme was “unprepared and arrogant” during his guest appearance on the show.
While he hasn’t responded to director Michael Lembeck’s comments, Van Damme told the New York Post in 2023 that he was “ashamed” of his acting in the episode.

Van Damme has been married five times – twice to female bodybuilder Gladys Portugues in 1987 and, after divorcing in 1992, again in 1999. They are still together now. The actor has three children.

‘Kickboxer’ not only made the actor a star in the late 80’s, it also gave us one of the most peculiar dances in martial arts cinema, with its protagonist, Kurt Sloane, giving it his all in a Thai bar with two girls to the rhythm of Paul Hertzog’s song “Feeling So Good Today”. So much so that his conspicuous demonstration of rhythm and dance infuriates the punks in the bar, leading to a memorable fight in which Sloane knocks out one by one those who dare to confront him.

Back-to-back victories for Soudal Quick-Step’s talented junior.
Thibaut Van Damme had an excellent weekend in Gent’s Flemish Cycling Center Eddy Merckx, where Belgium’s National Track Championships were held, winning a pair of gold medals. The 17-year-old, who will sport the colours of our junior team this season, showed off the Soudal Quick-Step kit for the first time and made sure he would make it a memorable outing.
Thibaut kicked things off by blasting to an impressive victory in the 1km race, where he gave no chance to his opponents, before taking on the points race. There, after an excellent start from his side, the others tried to put Van Damme under pressure by relentlessly attacking him in the second part of the race, but our rider kept his calm and scored enough points to make sure the win would be his.

“The Splitter,” as the new content is known
features Van Damme in the role of Max Valliant
a former ICA agent who somehow avoided a previous assassination attempt several years prior
Agent 47 will need to infiltrate the rainy streets and underground data facility of Chongqing
susses out Valliant’s “sinister agenda,” and finally puts the fellow assassin down for good
“Max Valliant is quite the entertaining character, bringing a lot of action movie villain energy, he is ruthless, and of course, he can do the split!” Van Damme said, referring to own penchant for performing the splits in his movies and stunts. “The Splitter is a thrilling mission and like in any good action flick, Hitman players will have a few surprises, but I’ll let them find out by themselves.”
Like all elusive targets, The Splitter cannot be attempted again if failed (restarting is always allowed, of course) and has a hard end date, this time Jan. 12, 2025. Paid downloadable content will provide endless retries in arcade mode as well as a new SMG, kukri knife, and cosmetics based on the mission. And finally, the new “Season of the Splitter” roadmap will feature three missions developed by the Hitman community, new featured contracts, and the return of past elusive targets.

I suppose Mortal Kombat is basically Bloodsport: The Game already
Maybe you're too young to remember Kickboxer, the 1989 martial arts movie where Jean-Claude Van Damme learns Muay Thai in a training montage, kicks down a banana tree, and dances in a way that suggests his ballet training was all for naught
Even as someone who wasted a good chunk of my life watching martial arts movies
kicked off a series that led to four sequels
Force Multiplier Studios has the rights to games based on the Kickboxer cinematic universe
and is making a game it says "will combine the rich narrative of Kickboxer with kinetic martial arts action to deliver an intense
and feature iconic characters and locations from the franchise"
The founders of Force Multiplier Studios have Tales from the Borderlands and multiple Call of Duty games among their credits
but I can't imagine a brawler based on Kickboxer being much like either of those things
Though I do hope there's room in it for a dancing rhythm game
CEO of Force Multiplier Studios Jeremy Breslau said
"we can't wait to innovate the fighting genre with incredibly visceral combat and an emphasis on the environment and what you can do in it
We are crafting a dynamic brawler that will empower players to be the best kickboxers in the world
traveling to exotic locales and introducing new environmental combat mechanics to deliver a martial arts experience like never before."
Maybe "environmental combat mechanics" means you'll be able to kick a pillar to intimidate your opponent
Force Multiplier says we can expect to hear more about the Kickboxer game later in 2025

Jean-Claude Van Damme was one of the biggest action movie stars of the late 80’s and 90’s
The Belgian born actor left us with many stories and movies to remember
such as ‘Bloodsport’ (1988) or ‘Double Impact’ (1991)
JCVD’s had plans to create a sequel for the latter
Van Damme even wrote 25 pages of the script together with Sheldon Lettich
‘Double Impact’ was profitable as it managed to make about twice its budget at the box office
Although this commercial success was significantly less than other previous JCVD productions such as ‘Bloodsport’ (1988) and ‘Kickboxer’ (1989)
it still proved that Van Damme was a safe bet for action movies
the actor played two twin brothers who must join forces to take revenge on some gangsters who murdered their parents
‘Double Impact’ was a movie that Jean-Claude Van Damme particularly liked
There were even talks with Sheldon Lettich
the two main characters played by Van Damme
separated from his brother when they were babies
JCVD wanted to explore the opposite approach
with a new story in which the brothers would find themselves in trouble in Los Angeles
There was also talk that the tone of this movie would be even more serious than the original
both Van Damme and Lettich were facing reality: this movie was too ambitious and would have been too expensive to produce
Lettich went so far as to say in an interview that in addition to the budget problems
there were logistical problems regarding who owned the rights
they would have to be involved as co-producers
which made the whole process of creating this new film legally difficult
This situation underscored Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s refusal to green-light the project
at a screening of the original film in Austin
Sheldon Lettich confirmed that the project had been canceled
the financial success of the first film had stalled the sequel: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer didn’t want to sell its rights cheaply in the face of a potential new hit
but it also didn’t want to be left out of the production
fans can only dream of what this ‘Double Impact 2′ would have been like
allowing them to see how the relationship between Alex and Chad evolved as they faced new dangers
One of the main attractions of the original was the great contrast between the personalities of each twin - Chad was raised “between cotton wool” while Alex grew up in the harsh streets of Hong Kong - something that would undoubtedly have been explored in this hypothetical sequel

Jean-Claude Van Damme is facing criminal charges in Romania following an alleged incident in Cannes
The B-movie action star is accused of having sex with five trafficked women who were delivered as a “gift” from independent festival organizers working in conjunction with a Romanian television executive
That’s according to a report from Newsweek
The person filing the complaint did not have contact with Van Damme; however
“is one of the victims in another case of child trafficking and prostitution in Romania,” according to her attorney
and one of eight women (including the five alleged victims) lured to Southern France to work as “models.”
Van Damme has yet to comment on the allegations
Former kickboxer Andrew Tate was recently in the news for his own sex trafficking complaint in Romania, which continues to play out in the media
the case can only move forward if investigators are able to locate and depose the alleged victims
