— Walking onto the ice for an optional morning skate
Calvin de Haan didn’t hide his frustration
The Rangers have made the veteran defenseman a healthy scratch for the past 18 games
adding that it’s “f—ed” how the Rangers have treated him
New York acquired de Haan in the package it received for Ryan Lindgren
Coach Peter Laviolette played him his first three games with the team and has made him a healthy scratch since
initially said he would speak to reporters after practice and be “very transparent.” He had a conversation with a Rangers public relations staffer when leaving the ice
then told reporters he would prefer to wait until after the season
He stressed it was his decision — not the public relations staff’s — to not go into more detail Sunday
“I said what I said because I am frustrated, and any competitor who says that they would be happy in this position would be lying to you,” de Haan later tweeted Sunday afternoon
“After playing (three) games for the team and going 2-0-1
I thought I maybe would have got an opportunity to jump into the lineup and help win some games
But we still won and collected some crucial points to climb the standings
I understand the youth movement in the NHL
and I’m getting older in hockey years and I may not play every single night
I feel like I can still contribute and help teams win
I know I’m not going to play 20 minutes a night in the role I’ve been in the past few years
I feel like I can still keep up and help a team in certain facets of the game
“I’m not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization
I would have preferred a scrum setting to chat about how my time with the Rangers has gone
As a player you have to respect the lineup decisions whether you like them or not
it’s just been frustrating not being able to compete and do what I love to do
With the Rangers eliminated from playoff contention less than a year after winning the Presidents’ Trophy
Laviolette knows change could be coming — potentially involving him
“I think everything gets looked at when a year is not good like this,” he said
I love being here with these guys and the New York Rangers
It’s a year where everything went right to a year where things didn’t go right
The Rangers set a record for wins and points in 2023-24
and though the Rangers’ season stabilized a bit when the calendar flipped to 2025 (21-17-6 record since Jan
especially with its power-play and defensive structure
Laviolette said there will be time to discuss specific elements of the Rangers’ season that went wrong but didn’t say much else Sunday
other than that the team needed to be more consistent
He also made clear he wants to remain with the Rangers
Everybody I just mentioned is faced with disappointment today
There’s always things that are looked at.”
Braden Schneider is out for the final two games of the season with an upper-body injury
He was dealing with the injury during the season
but will sit out now that the Rangers are officially eliminated
The 23-year-old is expected to be ready for the start of next season
Schneider will finish 2024-25 with 80 games played
His scoring numbers are all slightly above his previous career highs
nearly two minutes more than he has ever averaged in a season
the Rangers recalled Matthew Robertson from AHL Hartford
has been recalled multiple times in his career but has yet to appear in a game
Laviolette said he will debut Monday against the Florida Panthers
“My excitement level is super high,” Robertson said
“It feels like it’s been a long time coming
It seems like I’ve been close a couple times.”
Robertson found out he’d be in the lineup shortly before taking the ice in Fort Lauderdale
Young players will likely see increased ice time with the Rangers eliminated
Laviolette said Gabe Perreault and Brennan Othmann will both see action before the season is over
though he did not specify if they will play Monday in Florida
Will Cuylle scored his 20th goal of the season Saturday in Raleigh and would be a logical candidate for Team Canada’s World Championships roster
He has yet to hear from team executives on the possibility
I haven’t really thought about it too much,” Cuylle said
“It’s good to play hockey and get better and meet new people

whom the New York Rangers acquired from the Colorado Avalanche via trade earlier this season
has been scratched for the last 18 games and doesn't seem thrilled about it
I know I'm not going to play 20 minutes a night in the role I've been in the past few years
but again I feel like I can still keep up and help a team in certain facets of the game."
"I'm not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization
it's just been frustrating not being able to compete and do what I love to do."
The trade in full saw New York land de Haan
a 2025 conditional second-round pick and a 2025 conditional fourth-round pick for Ryan Lindgren
Jimmy Vesey and the rights to unsigned draft pick Hank Kempf
It seemed like de Haan would provide usable depth to the blue line for New York considering he played 44 games for the Avalanche this season prior to the deal
The journeyman also previously played for the New York Islanders
Hurricanes again and Tampa Bay Lightning before the Avalanche signed him to a one-year deal before the 2024-25 campaign
New York is just 20th in the league in goals allowed per game (3.15)
so it's not as if it has been dominant on defense and couldn't work de Haan into the lineup
It has also been eliminated from playoff contention so wouldn't be interrupting a dominant group with some lineup changes
It is clear de Haan is frustrated with the situation
and it is a pretty straightforward assumption that he won't be re-signing with the Rangers in free agency during the upcoming offseason
He is 34 years old and is no longer a significant offensive contributor from the blue line
so he likely won't command a big deal with any team
he isn't far removed from posting a plus-minus number of plus-seven in 2022-23 for the Hurricanes and has appeared in 38 postseason games in his career
Some other team may be interested in signing him and playing him far more than the Rangers have
which could lead to less frustration on his end with his next deal
Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey were traded to the Colorado Avalanche by the New York Rangers on Saturday for Juuso Parssinen, Calvin de Haan and conditional second- and fourth-round picks in the 2025 NHL Draft
The Rangers will retain 50 percent of Lindgren's one-year
The second-round pick is the better of their own or that of the Carolina Hurricanes
The fourth-round selection is the better of the Avalanche or the Vancouver Canucks
Lindgren, a 27-year-old defenseman, can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. He played for New York since he was acquired in the trade that sent Rick Nash to the Boston Bruins on Feb
(Rangers general manager) Chris Drury told me I got traded here
and obviously a lot of emotions go on," Lindgren said Sunday

On Sunday, de Haan made clear to reporters that he's dismayed over his current situation with the Rangers
telling the media that he thinks "it's f––ed" that he hasn't been in the lineup of late
While he initially indicated he wanted to air out his thoughts with reporters on Sunday
he later backtracked and decided it would be best to speak at the conclusion of the season
He did take to social media to provide a bit of clarity
"I was hoping that I would have been able to express in a scrum setting versus a quote as I was going onto the ice and having it on the internet 30 seconds later," wrote de Haan
I said what I said because I am frustrated
and any competitor who says that they would be happy in this position would be lying to you
"After playing 3 games for the team and going 2-0-1

Going to get ahead of this now…I was hoping that I would have been able to express in a scrum setting versus a quote as I was going onto the ice and having it on the Internet 30 seconds later

It's been a season full of frustrations for the entire organization

Calvin de Haan’s recent comments add to a growing list of Rangers players expressing frustration this season
As the team stumbles toward the finish line
questions about locker room culture and management are heating up
Prior to an optional skate for the New York Rangers this morning
who has only suited up in three games since coming over in the Ryan Lindgren trade
shared some frustrations in a passing comment with Mollie Walker of the New York Post:
#NYR Calvin de Haan walked past us as he was about to get on the ice and commented on how it’s all finally over
It’s fucked.’ We asked if he wanted to talk
that quote made the rounds and spread like wildfire through no fault of Mollie’s or de Haan’s
This season has been an utter disaster for the Rangers and one of the many storylines surrounding this franchise throughout the season is various circumstances where players have voiced their frustrations
It started with Kaapo Kakko and continued with Zac Jones
it can be dated back to the offseason with Barclay Goodrow and Jacob Trouba and even beyond that with Vitali Kravtsov.
Blueshirt Bandwidth podcast out every Thursday
A thirty minute practice and one conversation with the Rangers’ PR department later
de Haan decided to wait until the end of the season
After coming off the ice and having a conversation with #NYR PR
de Haan decided he wanted to wait until the end of the season so he could get more information.I confirmed it was his decision and he said yes
but it was clear the Blueshirts didn’t want him to talk
About an hour and a half after all this went down
de Haan made the following statement in reply to Jonny Lazarus on X:
but the main takeaway is that it’s not just one or two players that aren’t happy with how the Rangers are running things
Joe Fortunato is going to have a piece taking a deeper look at this coming soon
but the culture problem in New York is a serious issue—one that is raising some really justifiable concerns moving forward with Chris Drury at the helm
He made mention of this in his statement but the Rangers were 2-0-1 with him in the lineup
the Rangers defense pairings were really good in those first few games that followed the Ryan Lindgren trade and de Haan was a big part of that
at 33 years old maybe he’s not someone you should want to rely on every night
But he gave this team every reason to believe he could be a valuable option on the back end moving forward.
Now, the blue line did get a little crowded once everyone was healthy—although it turns out not everyone actually was, as we learned Braden Schneider has been nursing an injury for a while while playing through it
Not to mention the Rangers also brought inCarson Soucy
which played a huge role in de Haan becoming a healthy scratch for essentially the rest of the season (18 straight games)
The team was also set on remaining competitive
and trying to push for that final wildcard position to make the playoffs
along with the fact that the team continued to struggle
the fact that de Haan remained in the press box made no sense to anyone
including the veteran defenseman himself.
You can say the line about how you can only dress so many skaters but it’s incredibly difficult to comprehend how there wasn’t a single opportunity to give de Haan a second look in the last 18 games
Would he have been a difference maker and helped the Rangers get to a playoff spot
But seeing some sort of effort to make chances and find a solution would have been better than the result we saw on a nightly basis.
It will be especially interesting now to see if Calvin de Haan gets in the action at all with two games remaining in the season. We know that Matthew Robertson, who was called up in correspondence with the Braden Schneider injury
will make his NHL debut in one of those games
which makes finding a place for de Haan all the more difficult
de Haan's locker clean-out day interview will be an incredibly interesting one to look out for

and the Rangers themselves in 1993 and now in 2025
The 2024–2025 season is one the Rangers will want to forget as soon as possible
marked by underwhelming performances and off-ice drama
When asked about being a healthy scratch for the last 18 games
he didn’t mince words:“It’s f-cked,” the 33-year-old said
expressing his frustration and indicating he was willing to speak to the media regarding speculation about the locker room atmosphere
he spoke with the Rangers’ PR team and changed his mind
de Haan informed the media that he would wait until the end of the season before speaking publicly
Instead of giving a formal interview, de Haan took to X (formerly Twitter) to speak his truth

SUNRISE, Fla. - The Rangers clawed their way to a 5-3 comeback win over the Florida Panthers on Monday at Amerant Bank Arena
but the final result is far less consequential than some of the big-picture concerns surrounding the second-to-last game of this dwindling season
New York was eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday
leaving us to focus on topics that impact the future direction of the franchise
Nearly six years after being the second player selected in what was supposed to be a foundational draft for the Rangers
Matthew Robertson made his NHL debut under unceremonious circumstances
The 24-year-old defenseman has toiled in the AHL for four full seasons
never reaching the ceiling the Blueshirts envisioned when they selected him in the second round of the 2019 draft
but he's lacked physicality and his feel for the game has lagged behind
It took the Rangers being eliminated for him to finally get his chance
with long odds of sticking around – at least not in New York – and all that time in the minors reducing any trade value he once had
it was hard not to feel good for Robertson given his journey to this point
white and blue since getting drafted in 2019," he said
There were a lot of emotions and a lot of nerves
I was just very excited and proud of my family and everyone who's helped me."
said his parents and girlfriend flew in for the occasion
Getting paired with former Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox made it that much sweeter
he made it a lot easier for me to just jump in there and just focus on my game," said Robertson
who finished with two shots and a plus-one rating in 15:24 time on ice
It was a feel-good story in a season that's had too few of them
but the final judgment of that 2019 draft class won’t be kind to the Rangers
It started with so much hope surrounding No. 2 overall selection Kaapo Kakko, who had flashes but was often buried in the bottom six and never quite blossomed in New York. His relatively disappointing tenure ended shortly after the Finnish forward aired his grievances about being healthy scratched on Dec
leading to a trade with Seattle for a modest return of defenseman Will Borgen
He’ll be a case study for organizational development – or lack thereof – for years to come
Kakko was one of eight Rangers' selections in that draft
followed by fellow second-rounder Karl Henriksson at No
The undersized Swedish center also underwhelmed and failed to rise above AHL Hartford
where he posted only 40 points (18 goals and 22 assists) across 134 games before returning to the SHL this season
who soon surpassed Robertson in the defensemen pecking order but has struggled to earn the trust of multiple NHL coaches
He was scratched in six of the previous eight games before returning to the lineup Monday
but he’s never appeared in more than 45 games across five seasons due to coach’s decisions
There’s a decent chance that all but one member of that draft class will be elsewhere by the time next season begins
with the lone holdover being sixth-round forward Adam Edström (No
After inexplicably scratching the organization’s top-two prospects the previous two games
head coach Peter Laviolette reinserted Brennan Othmann and Gabe Perreault in Florida
with Othmann reuniting with Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck while Perreault slotted onto a line with J.T
The former trio posted strong results in their previous four games together
with a 77.11% xGF and 15-2 advantage in high-danger scoring chances
That made the initial decision to remove Othmann that much more puzzling
"You don't really like sitting out at any time
but we have a lot of forwards here," said Othmann
and a lot of guys deserve some opportunity and some chance
and it's kind of what you've got to sit with."
Brennan Othmann: Rangers rookie understands his role, but scratches make little sense
While Laviolette righted that wrong Monday
another puzzling lineup choice came to the forefront
Brett Berard, who scored a pair of goals in Thursday’s 9-2 win over the Islanders and earned praise from the coach as being “real noticeable” lately
took his turn on the healthy scratch merry-go-round
a couple other 24-and-under forwards – Matt Rempe and Juuso Pärssinen – each scored goals
Pärssinen now has five points (two goals and three assists) in the last three games after sitting out the previous six
"It's just about that impact in the game," Laviolette said
I've noticed that the last three games that he's been in here
Calvin de Haan falloutOne player who's consistently gotten the short end of the stick is Calvin de Haan
who was scratched for the 19th consecutive game
The 33-year-old defenseman − acquired in a Mar. 2 trade with Colorado − expressed displeasure with his situation via X on Sunday
After playing 3 games for the team and going 2-0-1
But we still won and collected some crucial points to climb the standings," he added
"I understand the youth movement in the nhl
but again I feel like I can still keep up and help a team in certain facets of the game."
"I’m not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization
Laviolette was asked prior to Monday's game if he's spoken with de Haan since
and I've had conversations with him the whole time," the coach said
de Haan's disgruntlement is far from a one off
He's one of several players who have vocalized frustration this season, whether it be over ice time or how they've been treated by an organization that continues to take PR hits
The list of those who have gone public with their discontent includes Jones
Jimmy Vesey and traded captain Jacob Trouba
fueling curiosity over whether there are others who have yet to speak up
Laviolette defended the lines of communication between the coaching staff and players
but it stands to reason that there is angst directed at team president Chris Drury
"Some of the players have expressed it because they want to play
You don't want players sitting out being perfectly fine not playing," Laviolette said
But there were plenty of conversations before that
but there were conversations that we had just to explain things."

and a brutally honest quote: Calvin de Haan’s short Rangers stint revealed deeper issues behind the scenes
This post is part of an ongoing series of Rangers Report Cards, grading the performance of each member of the 2024-25 New York Rangers. To view more report cards in this series, go here
we had no expectations at all for Calvin de Haan
perhaps someone on this masthead mulled it over as a hypothetical "who would be a good
safe depth defenseman the Rangers could get for cheap" question
He hasn't played 60 games in a single season since 2021-22
20 assists) in the only year of his career that played all 82 games
adding one more log to the jam that was a defense corps better characterized as having quantity over quality
After suiting up for the Blueshirts in the first three games after he came over from Colorado
de Haan sat in the press box for the final 20 games of the regular season
It's certainly worth mentioning that the Rangers were 2-0-1 in those three games
recording back-to-back shutouts against the Nashville Predators and the New York Islanders
and losing to the Washington Capitals in overtime
de Haan looked good in the limited role he was being asked to play
picking up an assist in his first game as a New York Ranger
de Haan played the majority of his Rangers minutes paired with Zac Jones
As for why what we saw from de Haan in these three games didn't merit more ice time
that's a question you'll have to direct to former Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette
You'd only get a Coach ChatGPT non-response response
Given the repeated defensive breakdowns that we witnessed in the 20 games that de Haan sat—and throughout the entire season—there doesn't seem to be an obvious reason we shouldn't have seen more of him
When we remember Calvin de Haan's (breif) time as a New York Ranger, it won't be for anything that he did on the ice. It'll be for what he said while he was walking on to the ice at the Rangers' practice facility
He'd go on to revise and extend his remarks in a reply to Jonny Lazarus on X:
It's hard to disagree with de Haan's stark and profane assessment of his time in New York
It's strange the extent to which NHL general managers don't have as much of a say over the lineup decisions NHL coaches make as GMs in other sports do
It's possible that Chris Drury had little intention of acquiring de Haan when he swung the deal with Colorado for Lindgren and Vesey
Colorado may have insisted the Rangers take him just to open a roster spot for Lindgren
this again is where the disconnect between GM and coach becomes evident
as well does one of Peter Laviolette myriad professional failings
Laviolette's assessment of the options available to him in the Rangers defensive corps was simply wrong
And Chris Drury's inability or unwillingness to assert a more firm hand with the coach and the line up allowed for the insanity of those poor defensive lineup decisions to be made over and over again
We'll remember Calvin de Haan more for what he revealed about the team than anything he did on skates
de Haan only played three games with the Rangers
and the Rangers looked good when he played in them
he's off to find his next free agent contract—that quest certainly a big reason why he quickly worked to deescalate his first comments
We just don't have enough facts in evidence to give him any grade other than an "incomplete," but we'll always appreciate the radical candor that de Haan gave us in that minute about just how ridiculous stupid and awful lineup decisions were throughout the 2024-25 season
Despite entering the season as a Stanley Cup contender
they've played well below expectations and will miss the postseason entirely
The Rangers' problems aren't ending just because the regular season is
Veteran defenseman Calvin De Haan is the latest disgruntled player and he was vocal about his issues with the team's head coach and management
De Haan freely spoke to reporters about his eagerness to finish the season and move on
he commented on his poor treatment since joining the organization and he will be eager to talk to the media
After the practice session and a conversation with the public relations team
De Haan opted to save any more comments until after the season
NY Post reporter Mollie Walker was on hand and shared the update on the veteran defender
After coming off the ice and having a conversation with #NYR PR
He last played on March 5th against the Washington Capitals
The veteran defender is a pending unrestricted free agent
and he likely will depart via free agency this summer
it's a matter of time until he speaks out about his experience in more detail
The Rangers have had a string of personnel issues this season. The team has had troubles with their head coach, multiple players in the NHL lineup
and could be set for even more shakeups ths summer
The departure of De Haan is a guarantee among those shakeups
Breakaway On SI will provide any updates and insights as they are made available

Defenseman Calvin de Haan is upset about the way the New York Rangers have treated him since the team acquired him on March 1
While passing by reporters before an on-ice session Sunday, de Haan said something to the effect of: "How about the way I've been treated here? It's f----d," according to New York Post Sports' Mollie Walker
De Haan has been a healthy scratch for the last 18 games
He's suited up for just three contests for the Rangers after being traded by the Colorado Avalanche
Rangers PR had a conversation with de Haan after he came off the ice, and he decided to wait until the end of the season to speak with the media, according to Walker
De Haan later took to social media to address the situation
"I said what I said because I am frustrated, and any competitor who says that they would be happy in this position would be lying to you," de Haan wrote on X
"After playing three games for the team and going 2-0-1
"I'm not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization
it's just been frustrating not being able to compete and do what I love to do
De Haan is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer
The 33-year-old has played 679 NHL games over 13 seasons
Players
Calvin de Haan has become the latest Ranger to voice his frustrations over his playing time, joining Kaapo Kakko, Jimmy Vesey, and Zac Jones in an ever growing list of frustrated Rangers. Initially, Calvin de Haan’s frustrations were colorful but not detailed, though he was able to clarify on social media later
though his situation is not unlike Vesey’s
as is understanding the full scope of the issue
Focusing on Calvin de Haan’s frustrations
he was acquired in a deadline deal as a roster balancing piece
he looked very good in his three games before being unceremoniously booted from the blue line
The Rangers went 2-0-1 in that time with de Haan playing solid defense on the third pair
winning the high danger chance battle 12-9 over those three games
including a 3-1 advantage against the division winning Capitals
giving the Rangers balance on their blue line
It’s easy to say the acquisition of Carson Soucy made de Haan a redundant piece
but there was a large stretch of games where Adam Fox was hurt and de Haan still didn’t play
This overlapped with a stretch where both Soucy and de Haan were scratched
So competition had little to do with de Haan’s ice time
We will never know why de Haan was continually scratched by Peter Laviolette
despite on-ice results that have been better than both Soucy and Urho Vaakanainen
so scratching de Haan every night seemed counter productive to his goals
NHL coaches are weird and set in their ways
Calvin de Haan’s frustrations are valid
but his ice time is the least of anyone’s concerns right now
That’s nothing against him and his complaints
but the Rangers needed to see what they had in both Vaakanainen and Soucy
Vaakanainen has since been extended and Soucy has looked pretty rough
It would not surprise me to see Soucy traded in the offseason
He has a right to be upset with how he’s been handled here
but he is what he is at this point for the Rangers
are both valid and inconsequential to the Rangers
this is another symptom of a much larger problem for the Rangers
we’ve had many players voice frustrations at their treatment
The quartet mentioned above are from this year
but we’ve heard from Vitali Kravtsov
who was publicly berated by Drury at one point
The status of the player and whether they were a draft bust doesn’t matter
It’s easy as a fan to default to “well Kravtsov was a bust” and “well de Haan and Vesey were spare parts” and “Kakko wasn’t producing.” These are all factual statements
In this case, the trees are each individual complaint. The forest is that there are now at least 5 complaints like this across multiple coaches, and that’s just what we know about. The lone constant in this span is Drury, and it’s something I wrote about in October 2021
For the sake of this post we won’t be diving into each trade or signing
instead focusing on personnel relationships
it’s that the Mike Babcock approach doesn’t work anymore
Players aren’t reacting the same way
and the hardnose approach needs to be softened
This rings especially true when publicly berating players
This goes far beyond just the five guys mentioned here
I have staunchly defended Drury’s approach to shedding Barclay Goodrow via waivers
but it appears he did not even give Goodrow a heads up first
There was no warning given to either Jacob Trouba or Chris Kreider about their inclusion in that trade memo either
So now we have eight players ranging from kid to respected veteran all showing communication issues with Drury
The stink this year starts at the very top
and Drury is not exempt from blame in how this season went
especially in light of all these complaints
Whatever Drury is doing in the locker room
His desire to have a hand in everything isn’t working
Refusing to delegate and/or learn to address his shortcomings isn’t working
it’s clear Drury needs a buffer between him and the players
Someone to soften the communication and perhaps keep Drury clear of the locker room
That’s one thing both Glen Sather and Jeff Gorton were good with: They didn’t meddle in the locker room
The players quitting this year is most certainly connected to how Drury has treated his players
Peter Laviolette is not innocent in any of this
but since the issue extends to both Gerard Gallant as well
It is also clear they need a change in the front office
but he needs a buffer between him and the players
or else the Rangers will fall further into joke territory
This iteration of the Rangers is dangerously close to the 1998-2004 dark ages teams
but at least those teams didn’t quit on the fans

this week of games really doesn’t mean anything of importance
But something happened on Sunday afternoon that might have just highlighted what the offseason could look like
The New York Rangers are out of playoff contention
Newly acquired and rarely used defenseman Calvin de Haan opened up a whole can of worms to the media on Sunday with one of the most bizarre quotes you will see
#NYR Calvin de Haan walked past us as he was about to get on the ice and commented on how it’s all finally over
This has all the makings of a very uncomfortable situation this offseason
both behind closed doors and with the media
something that hasn’t been very prevalent in the past
and their performance struggles could be blamed on that as a part of it
General Manager Chris Drury has to make sure his ducks are in a row because these occurrences are starting to stack up
The comments made by de Haan come after he was scratched from the lineup 18 times this season after playing in the three games after his trade to New York
expected to completely change around the season
His acquisition in the Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey trade with the Colorado Avalanche was likely to dump those salaries
why not give de Haan a shot down the stretch
This season has been very public for the front office. There was the drama surrounding the offseason comments on Jacob Trouba, then Trouba’s comments on the front office after he was traded to Anaheim. Plus, the Kaapo Kakko situation, in which he expressed his displeasure with management before being sent to Seattle
This situation with de Haan is another example of why there may be changes coming in the offseason
but upper management also needs to be looked at hard
His comments on his treatment are bizarre and surprising
but with the track record being the way it is

Newly acquired and rarely used defenseman Calvin de Haan opened up a whole can of worms to the media on Sunday with one of the most bizarre quotes you will see
#NYR Calvin de Haan walked past us as he was about to get on the ice and commented on how it’s all finally over
New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Calvin de Haan
a conditional second-round pick and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Ryan Lindgren
and the rights to unsigned draft pick Hank Kempf
New York now owns eight selections in the upcoming draft
has appeared in 44 games with Colorado this season
he ranks fifth among skaters in hits (59) and blocked shots (58)
de Haan has accumulated 24 goals and 124 assists for 148 points in 676 career NHL games across 13 seasons
He has registered at least 100 hits and 100 blocked shots six times over his career and finished with a plus-1 or better rating in eight campaigns
Ontario native has also appeared in 38 playoff games across five seasons
de Haan won a silver medal with Canada at the 2017 World Championship and at both the 2010 and 2011 World Junior Championship
De Haan was originally selected by the Islanders in the first round
has skated in 37 games between the Avalanche and Nashville Predators this season
recording four goals and seven assists for 11 points
The forward played in his 100th career NHL game on Nov
Parssinen has collected 48 points (18G-30A) in 126 career NHL games with Colorado and Nashville
212 pounder registered career highs in games (45)
Parssinen has represented Finland at multiple tournaments
including the 2021 World Junior Championship
Parssinen was originally selected by the Predators in the seventh round
TARRYTOWN - Every month has brought more change for the 2024-25 Rangers
and they wasted no time continuing that trend into what promises to be an active first week of March
Blueshirts staples Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey are gone
traded to the Avalanche in the first move of what turned out to be a busy Saturday across the NHL
They're being replaced by young center Juuso Pärssinen and veteran defenseman Calvin de Haan
who arrived from Colorado and jumped right onto the ice for Sunday's morning skate at the MSG Training Center
"It's always tough to see change," head coach Peter Laviolette said. "But that being said, the focus shifts to (Sunday's 7 p.m.) game (vs. the Nashville Predators) and getting the two new players we received up to speed."
Analysis: Rangers trade Lindgren, Vesey to Avs for four-part package
Team president Chris Drury is trying to have his cake and eat it too by selling off players on expiring contracts without derailing the Rangers' playoff chase
At least one more trade is coming before Friday's 3 p.m
with veteran forward Reilly Smith being held out of Sunday's game for what the team deemed "roster management purposes." But New York is counting on Pärssinen
de Haan and forward prospect Brett Berard − who was recalled Saturday after Chris Kreider (upper-body injury) was placed on injured reserve − to step in and plug the resulting holes
The hope is they'll "provide some juice," as Laviolette put it
and helps a team that's sitting four points out of the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot
The Rangers didn't receive any favors on Saturday
when nearly all the teams they're jockeying with won
"Thanks for bringing all that up," Laviolette quipped
"It'd be great if those teams do what they do
but I still feel like we're in control of what we can do here
We string together the majority of the wins – if we can put 75%
Pärssinen is the most intriguing piece to come back in the trade because he's still young enough at 24 to believe there's untapped potential
He was playing some wing with the Avs but has spent much of his three-year career and time at lower levels in the middle
Laviolette intends to give him that chance and has him slotted in as the third-line center between rookie Brennan Othmann and veteran Jonny Brodzinski
he was playing with some pretty good players
I coached against him and watched some games recently with a couple of their top-end players
It’s a great opportunity for him to come in and show what he can do
The Rangers have been scouting the 6-foot-3
212-pounder for years and attempted to pry him away from the Predators before they traded him to Colorado in December
according to one person with knowledge of the situation
And they took note when he played well in two head-to-head meetings this season
His production has been underwhelming (a career average of 0.38 points per game) and his overall game inconsistent
with some scouts believing a third-line role may be his best-case scenario on a contending team
But that would be just fine for the Rangers
Vincent Trocheck and Mika Zibanejad but need to infuse their bottom six with young
"I was a little bit shocked (about the trade)
it's a pretty legendary organization," said Pärssinen
who will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights this summer
"It feels pretty special today to put on the jersey."
who will be playing for his sixth team in the last eight years
will make his Rangers' debut on the bottom pair alongside Zac Jones
with Laviolette noting they'll try both on the right side and "have conversations" about who handles the switch better
The 33-year-old is limited offensively with no goals and seven assists through 44 games this season
but he embraces his role as a stay-at-home defenseman and pointed to his respectable analytics in a lighthearted-but-accurate moment
move pucks up to the forwards and go from there," de Haan said
"If everyone's on my hockey DB (page) right now
But my underlying numbers – the fancy stuff – has been pretty good for most of the season
particularly in the bottom six and defense
with unproven players in multiple spots but intrigue regarding how the youth will handle their newfound responsibilities
The locker room is taking on a much different feel
Lindgren and Vesey were as popular as any teammates in recent years
Kaapo Kakko and Jacob Trouba as players who have been ousted following a multi-year run of success with minimal turnover
A new era of Blueshirts' hockey is unfolding in front of us
with those caught in the crossfire doing their best to cope while keeping their focus on the ice
"I don't think anyone enjoys it," Zibanejad said
"I don't know if it's even fun for the GMs to trade guys like that
We've been fortunate last couple years to kind of stick with the team that we've had for some years now
and it’s the tough part of the business when you lose guys like that."

Calvin de Haan continues to provide a steadying presence on the back end
and Tampa Bay Lightning before signing a one-year contract with the Avs during the summer of 2024
stay-at-home [defending] mindset,” Jared Bednar said when asked what de Haan brings to the defensive unit
He’s got that veteran experience so he doesn’t get rattled.”
averaging 15:24 of time on ice per contest
All the defending mentality that you want in a guy in certain situations.”
The transition to Denver has been pretty seamless for him and his family
adding that they are getting used to the area they live in
He also said that the hockey is pretty similar to where he’s played before
so that stuff is pretty easy to adapt to.”
de Haan has been paired with 26-year-old Sam Malinski on defense
who made his NHL debut with the Avs last season
The veteran said he’s trying to take a mentorship role with Malinski
emphasizing the importance of having a well-rounded game
“You’ve got to be able to play defense still in this league to earn a paycheck,” de Haan said
“You can’t just go out there and score billions of points and be minus-50
You have to still take care of your own end.”
“That’s one thing I’ve really tried to harp on him and communicate to him as well
and the rest will take care of itself at the end of the day.”
said playing on a pair with de Haan has been helpful
“I think especially in times where we’re maybe struggling to get the puck out of the zone,” Malinski said
“He’s a guy that knows how to make the quick fix and simple our game down so that we’re playing efficiently.”
Bednar said a player’s defensive partner is their lifeline
and it’s important for those partners to help each other
[a] veteran guy that can read plays and talk through things in the defensive zone I think really helps Sam,” Bednar said
“And I think Sam really helps Calvin with his puck-moving ability and the ability to jump up and create offense when they’re on the ice as well.”
saying he has more flair to his game while de Haan’s game is simpler
“And then he helps me out in the d-zone when I need it.”
One thing Malinski said he’s learned from de Haan is that sometimes
“I think he’s a player who plays the game really simple,” Malinski said
“And I think he would say the same about himself
de Haan has helped the team both on the ice and in the locker room
And now that this miserable New York Rangers season is just about over
the veteran defenseman is apparently ready to unleash his simmering anger
Beat writers Mollie Walker (New York Post) and Peter Baugh (The Athletic) each reported that de Haan had a few choice words about his situation with the Rangers on his way to the ice for an optional practice in South Florida on Sunday
The 13-year NHL veteran reportedly said that it’s “f—-d” how the Rangers have treated him since he was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche on March 1
He also reportedly said “just wasting time,” perhaps about taking part in practice after being a healthy scratch for 18 straight games
De Haan told the reporters he’d speak with them after practice
after speaking to a member of the Rangers public relations staff
he begged off and said he’d speak another day
Because his initial comments were posted on social media
de Haan posted a lengthy statement on X (formerly Twitter) to explain himself
“I’m not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization
I would have preferred a scrum setting to chat about how my time with the Rangers has gone,” de Haan stated in part
“As a player you have to respect the lineup decisions whether you like them or not
Related: Mark Messier believes ‘spirit was missing’ for Rangers during this miserable season
It seems that de Haan held his tongue until the Rangers were officially eliminated from playoff contention
which they were Saturday following a 7-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes
The 33-year-old played three games in a row after the trade
and the Rangers snagged five of six points (2-0-1)
after Carson Soucy was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in a pre-deadline trade
The Rangers are 6-10-2 in the past 18 games without de Haan in the lineup
Urho Vaakanainen and Zac Jones each have received playing time instead of de Haan
who had one assist and was plus-4 in the three games he played with the Rangers
He had seven assists and was minus-8 in 44 games earlier this season with the Avalanche
“Did I help win those games I played
But we still won and collected some crucial points to climb the standings,” de Haan said in his statement
“I understand the youth movement in the NHL
but again I feel like I can still keep up and help a team in certain facets of the game.”
Maybe the final straw for de Haan was that the Rangers recalled defenseman Matthew Robertson from Hartford of the American Hockey League on Sunday and coach Peter Laviolette said the 24-year-old will make his NHL debut against the Florida Panthers on Monday
Braden Schneider won’t play the final two games of the season because of an upper-body injury
The Rangers were carrying two extra defensemen before electing to sit Schneider
but added Robertson to give him an opportunity with nothing on the line for the Blueshirts
De Haan is set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end
Since he is not part of New York’s future
it makes sense to get a look at Robertson instead
The Rangers close out the season Thursday at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning
de Haan should have the chance to get things off his chest either Friday or Saturday

Calvin de Haan isn't exactly pleased with how his New York Rangers tenure has gone so far
Since joining the Rangers through a March 1 trade from the Colorado Avalanche
the veteran defenceman has played in just three games with his new team
But as he took the ice for morning skate on Sunday, the New York Post's Millie Walker reported hearing de Haan say something "to the effect of
Reporters then asked de Haan if he wanted to speak after the skate
to which he answered "yes" and said he would be "very transparent," Walker added
de Haan decided he wanted to wait until the end of the season to speak to the media about his situation
But as conversation began after Walker's report, de Haan took to social media to give his take on his time in the Big Apple.
"I was hoping that I would have been able to express in a scrum setting versus a quote as I was going onto the ice and having it on the Internet 30 seconds later," de Haan wrote on X. "I said what I said because I am frustrated, and any competitor who says that they would be happy in this position would be lying to you.
"After playing three games for the team and going 2-0-1, I thought I maybe would have got an opportunity to jump into the lineup and help win some games."
de Haan's three games as a Ranger all came in the immediate aftermath of the trade, as the 33-year-old averaged 15:51 of ice time in wins over the Predators and Islanders and an overtime loss to the Capitals. de Haan picked up one assist and had a plus-3 rating in those games.
New York, of course, was eliminated from playoff contention earlier this week and has since fallen to 37-36-7 with two games to play.
Playing in his 13th NHL season with his sixth team, de Haan is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of 2024-25.
"I’m not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization, I would have preferred a scrum setting to chat about how my time with the Rangers has gone," he finished. "As a player you have to respect the lineup decisions whether you like them or not, it’s just been frustrating not being able to compete and do what I love to do. I hope everyone understands."
The Rangers finish their season with games against Florida and Tampa Bay on Monday and Thursday.

Trades are putting old friends in ugly new clothes
Trade action around the NHL picked up over the weekend
though not for the Isles (at least by the time of this posting)
As the whole league heads into the Trade Deadline week
the East has at least eight teams fighting for two wild card spots
while the West has at least four and probably five who are out of it completely
That sets up some different dynamic for would-be sellers and buyers
are above them in the standings but being realistic about where they are as a franchise
They held Reilly Smith out of last night’s tilt with the Predators for “roster management” purposes — i.e
keeping him healthy in the event they complete a trade — and also sent pending UFAs Jimmy Vesey and Ryan Lindgren to the Avalanche for {gasp!} Calvin de Haan (also a UFA)
plus a couple of conditional picks and main target Juuso Parssinen
The Islanders...might still be trying to sign Brock Nelson
But there must be a market for him and Kyle Palmieri
so surely they’ll have some activity this week in one direction or the other

New York Rangers defenseman Calvin de Haan caused a major stir over the weekend when he spoke frankly about how he was being utilized
While about to step onto the ice for practice
he made a notable comment about how he felt the Rangers were using him
after indicating that he wanted to speak more about the situation with reporters
who clearly did not want him to say what he was about to say
de Haan, who began the year with the Colorado Avalanche before being acquired by the Rangers in early March, hasn't played since March 5 against the Washington Capitals
de Haan then wrote the following on his personal X account about what had transpired
de Haan clarified his comments by saying that he wasn't intending to 'throw shade' at the Rangers but that he would have preferred a more traditional 'scrum' setting with journalists to explain his side of the situation
de Haan has played in 47 games this year split between Colorado and New York

Calvin de Haan got some things off his chest about the New York Rangers on Monday
But his break-up day session with reporters wasn’t nearly as explosive as expected following his outburst last week in South Florida
Back on April 19, de Haan told reporters it’s “f____ed” how the Rangers treated him since he was acquired in a trade from the Colorado Avalanche on March 1
De Haan played three games and then was scratched the rest of the regular season (20 games)
despite playing well and the Rangers posting a 2-0-1 mark in those games he played
“Not much to assess, you know, I only played three games,” de Haan said at breakup day
going home to enjoy some time with friends and family
I’ll be getting in the gym somewhat quick
trying to be in the best possible shape for training camp wherever that may be
It’s a bit of a head scratcher why de Haan sat for 20 consecutive games when the Rangers needed a win every night in their push to try and make the Stanley Cup Playoffs
After the Rangers acquired defenseman Carson Soucy from the Vancouver Canucks shortly after picking up de Haan
Urho Vaakanainen and Zac Jones all played ahead of de Haan
even when K’Andre Miller missed time due to injury
“I was a part of a trade for a Ranger who was a good New York Ranger for a long time,” explained de Haan
“I was told I was going to be a part of the team moving forward and get an opportunity.”
De Haan voiced his frustration to the media with about a week left in the regular season
releasing a statement saying that he would dive more into the topic on breakup day
and was noticeably aggravated about the subject
“Guys who have been in my position for that long just want to play,” de Haan said
you probably shouldn’t be in this line of work
If you’re just content with sitting on the sideline
that’s not a good thing in my opinion
No hard feelings to anyone in the organization
At the time it was just frustrating.”

De Haan won’t be back next season. He’s an unrestricted free agent and will be looking for a new NHL home in 2025-26. The 33-year-old has played for five teams during the past four seasons
His assessment of the Rangers is a valued one
“It’s a good bunch of guys here,” de Haan said
I don’t think that’s a pressing issue
and you need a bounce here and there.”
But was it just poor puck luck that sabotaged the Rangers during this miserable season
especially during their failed playoff push
“There were definitely times that I saw where it was just not cohesive maybe
it was frustrating to see some of the goals we were letting in
this is a group of five on the ice that were letting in goals
but then there were flashes of brilliance where you’re like
It’s still hard to fathom that the Rangers are not in the playoffs
not one of the eight best teams in the Eastern Conference
Just a year ago they were the Presidents’ Trophy winners
Now they’re the biggest disappointment of the 2024-25 season
what comes next for de Haan and the Rangers
the bar will still be set high for this organization — and it should be
Jimmy Vesey and prospect Hank Kempf to the Colorado Avalanche for Juuso Parssinen
a second-round pick and a fourth-round pick
The second-round pick will be the better of the Carolina Hurricanes or New York’s (both owned by Colorado) this year and the better of Colorado or the Vancouver Canucks’ fourth-round pick
The Rangers are four points out of a playoff spot and did not want to let pending unrestricted free agents walk for nothing
Both Lindgren and Vesey are on expiring contracts
The Rangers will retain 50 percent of Lindgren’s cap hit
Getting a second-round pick in the deal is a win for the Rangers
who previously did not have a second-round pick in each of the next three years’ drafts
De Haan can fill Lindgren’s spot on defense
and Parssinen is a young forward Colorado acquired from the Nashville Predators earlier this season
He’s a pending restricted free agent with arbitration rights
The Rangers had discussions to acquire Parssinen while with the Predators before the Avalanche acquired him
and they view him as an immediate option at center
He has 11 points in 37 games this year between his time in Nashville and Colorado
he could perhaps go into 2025-26 as the team’s third-line center
which would allow the team to keep Mika Zibanejad at top line right wing
Parssinen got occasional looks in Colorado’s top-six forward group
but he averaged only 9:47 of ice time a game with the club
He was a healthy scratch the past three games
His best stretch of production came in the 2022-23 season when he had 20 points in the Predators’ final 29 games
He split time between the NHL and AHL the next year and has yet to find consistency at the NHL level
the Rangers still got two draft picks without tying themselves to any contracts long-term
De Haan has had a difficult year for the Avalanche
which is part of why they were looking for an upgrade on defense
He likely will take on a lesser role than Lindgren had with New York
The Rangers still want to make the playoffs this year
The front office felt this deal allowed the team to both recoup draft picks and add a young
all while leaving them a roster that can contend for one of the final Wild Card spots
It does not make their current team better
but it also shouldn’t make it drastically worse
Rangers president Chris Drury started this year with a roster built mostly by his predecessors John Davidson and Jeff Gorton
Moving on from Lindgren is a further shift in a new direction as he makes the roster his own
the Avalanche get a gritty defenseman who played significant time with Adam Fox
He will likely be asked to play less in Colorado
He’s been a big part of the Rangers’ penalty kill but has struggled at points this season despite his career-high 19 points
New York had less than 50 percent of the expected goal share with Lindgren on the ice at five-on-five
and that number is likely boosted by his time with Fox
He should benefit from playing fewer minutes against less difficult competition in Colorado
given how much of the load Cale Makar and Devon Toews carry
The Avalanche will face a decision with him after this year
but he also comes with risk if they decide to extend him
could lead to his body continuing to break down
Vesey is an effective fourth-line option who just crossed the 100-career goal plateau
He was in and out of the Rangers’ lineup this season
the Rangers are still looking for a solution to their problems on the blue line
the coaching staff has seemingly forgotten a member of the organization since his acquisition
Ontario native could stabilize parts of the Rangers' defensive unit moving forward if he was given a shot
The New York Rangers' defensive issues are well-documented
de Haan has been around for a while; he's not new to the NHL and isn't an inexperienced kid needing help
He has been deep in the postseason with multiple teams; he's been around some of the best players in the NHL and knows how to play at this level
the Rangers opted for mixed bags like Zac Wilson and Urho Vaakanainen before installing de Haan into the lineup
When Peter Laviolette is looking at his defensive options
why does he not go for someone who has been in this league for 13 years and played for six different teams
It is confusing for the Rangers coaching staff
and explaining that to the fans would be hard
All I can suggest is that perhaps the Rangers do not like that de Haan's offense is not where you'd like it to be regarding how the Rangers want to play
He's a calming presence on the ice who has been in plenty of playoff chases
There's a lot to like regarding what de Haan can offer
and he should be getting more of a look than he is
Was he only acquired to allow Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey to be traded to Colorado
