Four people were arrested Sunday morning in Deurne for assaulting a train conductor and a machinist
The two Dutch Railways (NS) employees were attacked after confronting the suspects over a lack of valid tickets on a train from Eindhoven to Venlo
The incident occurred when the train crew asked the group—two men and two women—to present their travel documents
the suspects assaulted the machinist and conductor
Although the NS employees were not physically injured
the attack prompted immediate intervention
the four suspects exited the train and were taken into custody on Stationsstraat by responding officers
The assault follows concerning figures released by NS earlier this week
According to the railway company's annual report
employees were subjected to 1,095 criminal incidents in 2023
The most common trigger for aggression was addressing passengers about their behavior
While NS noted a decrease in incidents of aggression on trains
“We also see that the aggression has intensified
especially towards our Safety & Service staff,” NS said in a statement
in collaboration with housing association Bergopwaarts
is set to develop two new green residential neighbourhoods in the municipality of Deurne
The municipality and AM have formalised the previously agreed plans by signing a preliminary agreement for both developments
The Groene Heerlijkheid and Grote Bottel projects will bring a total of 647 homes to Deurne
with a significant portion dedicated to social housing
A shared planning philosophy has been applied to the urban design of both developments
which are located approximately 300 metres apart
ensuring ample space for plants and wildlife
and the streetscape is designed to prioritise liveability over car use
The outdoor areas encourage people of all ages to spend time outside
residents become more aware of their environment and are inspired to apply similar principles to their own properties
Both urban plans have been designed by the architectural firm CB5

A massive fire broke out at a business complex in Deurne on Monday evening
prompting an emergency response from local firefighters
described as a "very large industrial fire," is considered difficult to control due to the strong winds in the area
Firefighters are working with multiple vehicles
A spokesperson for the fire department indicated that the business is unlikely to be salvaged
referring to the situation as an "extinguishing scenario."
The fire is believed to have started in the roof area of the building
and authorities have not released additional details about the incident
we expect the building to be completely destroyed," the spokesperson said
As thick black smoke billows from the site
local authorities have issued warnings for nearby businesses and residents
A NL Alert was sent urging people in the vicinity to keep their windows and doors shut and avoid exposure to the smoke
Firefighters continue their efforts to control the blaze
The investigation into the fire's cause is ongoing
teachers do not have to first create order at the start of the lesson
The approach is 'clear' and 'warm' and turns desired behavior into a habit
For a school that is known for ensuring that there is peace and order in the corridors
things are not going completely smoothly before the start of lessons
agrees social studies teacher Sjors Nijnens of the Alfrink College in Deurne
students wait quietly and two by two in a row for him if he is not yet in the classroom
But the school has only just moved into the brand new building
And it takes some getting used to for students: how do you create a line in a corridor that is not straight as in the old building
So there is unrest and Nijnen's students have to form that line again before starting the lesson.
Nijnens dismisses the fact that it seems a bit childish to an outsider to require fourth-year MAVO students
to wait two by two and in a row for the teacher before entering
“They are my guests and not the other way around
This means I don't have to keep telling them to be quiet at the start
I say 'Good morning' and they do the starting assignment that is ready on the board
like at my previous school where I had to shut things down regularly
started looking for ways to improve their own education
A collaboration was established with the Expertise Center for Effective Learning
which is affiliated with the Thomas More University of Applied Sciences in Flanders and which translates scientific insights into educational practice
Some of these insights led to a new vision on education in Deurne
according to team leader Rianne Baggermans
is more pronounced than that of many other schools
We do what science says works and what we know works for our students
Such as a teaching approach that is the same for every teacher.”
Many elements come directly from the explicit direct instruction model
During the first ten minutes of the lesson
the teacher has the time to make contact with students and help them get started with the starting assignment
“The teacher then proceeds with the instruction
in which students work together with their shoulder buddy and sometimes use erase boards.”
the teacher can check whether he can continue or whether he should slow down because not everyone has understood the instruction
there are tailor-made hours for which the student can register
Teachers can also register students for this
Every student should be given the opportunity to get the most out of it.”
Crucial is the pedagogical approach that Baggermans describes as 'clear' and 'warm'
We are long past the discussion about that.”
Nijnens demonstrates the school-wide digital reward system
showing how much per class merits en demerits
“We mainly give merits to emphasize a positive approach,” says Baggermans
“This shows that we are happy with the efforts of a student
We praise them extra highly at the beginning of the school year
Does a student hold the door open for the teacher upon arrival
You can save those earnings to buy a sandwich from the canteen
everyone used their own punishment measures
which therefore were not nearly as effective
Here you have no discussion about what is allowed for one person and not for another
Everyone has the same rules and students take their merits with them to the next lessons.”
Isn't it lame to enforce manners with a reward
We say: These are our norms and values,” explains team leader Inge Hoeymans
we are extra generous with the merits in the first grades and at the start of a new school year
But gradually a student no longer receives a merit for every time he has done his homework
That is the moment when that desired behavior has become a habit
Mathematics teacher Bas Imandt remembers that this was sometimes different in the past
He has been working at the Alfrink College for about ten years and can still remember the old way of working
while we now have clear agreements with each other about what we expect from children
And they know that together we ensure that every child can come along
The Alfrink College regularly receives visits from other school teams
Since the Expertise Center appointed the school as an 'official' model school
That does not mean that the school itself is fully developed
Mathematics teacher Bas Imandt Image: Rob Niemantsverdriet
The big challenge for now is the transition to the new building
We can expect students to walk quietly through the corridors
but how do you actually do that in this new building
Mentors from year 1 therefore regularly take their class to the auditorium to practice walking back to the classroom
The process of the new construction has made it clear how important these agreements are
If we assume too easily that things will go well
But sometimes you also have to stop and slow down to see together whether you are still doing well
That is why we encourage teachers to visit each other regularly and observe
The doors are always literally open here.”
The King of the Netherlands yesterday officially opened the new factory hall in Deurne by putting the Ebusco 3.0 bus on the charger (its debut in operation is scheduled in early 2022)
The factory in Deurne is expected to have a production capacity of five hundred emission-free buses per year by 2022
Prior to the opening, Mr. Hololei, Director General for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission and State Secretary Van Weyenberg of Infrastructure and Water Management discussed the energy transition and the importance of electrification of public transport and transport.
After the official opening, King Willem Alexander and Messrs. Hololei and Van Weyenberg, were given a tour of the factory by CEO Peter Bijvelds. A number of Ebusco employees provided an explanation of the various stages of the production process. During round table discussions that followed, the importance of the ecosystems for electric vehicles and the entire supply chain of the electric bus were discussed.

Electric bus manufacturer Ebusco reported lower sales and a more significant loss in the year's first half
This is mainly due to start-up problems and the expenditure of production work
There were also problems with finishing the buses at the Ebusco production site in Deurne
Revenues dropped to 38 million euros from 41.7 million euros in the first six months of last year
Ebusco's bottom line was 64.7 million euros short
it was a disappointing start to the year," says founder Peter Bijvelds
The Brabant company had already warned that the results would be disappointing
The business had been reorganizing and started using external producers more often
This was meant to result in cost benefits and predictable delivery times
it turned out that further cost-cutting measures were needed
Ebusco is now seeing benefits from its cost-cutting measures
A relatively high number of employees have left the company in the last few months
893 people were still working at Ebusco at the end of last year
This number was down to 770 full-time employees at the end of June
Train services around Eindhoven were significantly reduced Sunday due to a malfunctioning track switch near Deurne
The railway infrastructure company stated that repair work on the switch would be completed overnight from Sunday to Monday
The Netherlands Railways (NS) adjusted its schedule and provided replacement bus services for affected routes
fewer intercity trains were operating between Eindhoven and Venlo on Sunday
sprinter trains from Den Bosch were terminating at Eindhoven and not continuing further south
The disruption caused delays and required passengers to plan for longer travel times or alternative routes
ProRail has assured that normal operations are expected to resume Monday morning following the overnight repairs
Transport company Qbuzz was given permission by the court in Utrecht on Wednesday to cancel the order of 45 electric buses from Ebusco
This came after Ebusco had filed summary proceedings against Qbuzz
but Qbuzz wants to cancel the order because Ebusco was too late delivering the vehicles
The bus manufacturer wanted to force Qbuzz to pay for the order anyway with the case
The bus manufacturer from Deurne has had production issues that have gotten so bad that analysts have feared for the company's existence due to hefty losses this year
The loss of the Qbuzz order puts even more pressure on Ebusco’s financials
Ebusco has mostly stopped production in order to keep the company's financials stable while awaiting the verdict of the case and completing the issuance of new shares to shareholders
Qbuzz has been permitted by the court to cancel the agreement between the two companies because Ebusco did not stick to the settlement agreement
it was stated that Qbuzz was allowed to cancel the agreement if Ebusco did not deliver the busses on time
and Qbuzz felt the waiting time was unreasonable
Another reason that Qbuzz was allowed to cancel the agreement
is that there is "a serious suspicion" that Ebusco will not meet its maintenance obligations and guarantees
the judge ruled that Qbuzz was allowed to seize one of Ebusco's accounts
The regional carrier did this because Ebusco still has to pay more than 1.2 million euros for "delay damages"
and the surrounding areas of Utrecht under the name U-OV
Ebusco founder Peter Bijvelds landed in 95th on the Quote 500 list of the wealthiest people in the Netherlands
He reportedly had a net worth of 480 million euros
after his company carried a 1.3 billion euro valuation following an IPO
But his net worth fell to 165 million euros in 2023
The troubles at Ebusco led the company to nudge Bijvelds from CEO to co-CEO at the start of this year
He and fellow co-CEO Michiel Peters were ousted at the end of August in favor of Christian Schreyer
who has a deeper background in public transportation

He stumbled against and injured himself while running away from Egyptian geese in the Boekenberg Park in the Deurne
The injured actor has posted a photo of himself that was taken in his hospital bed
But are Egyptian geese really so aggressive
The ornithologist Gerald Driessens told VRT News that “It is normal that during the nesting season the birds try and protect their nest and their young
most people end up being injured because of how they react and not due an attack by the birds”
In an interview with VRT Radio 2 Mr Driessens said that “It is highly exceptional that that birds become aggressive
there are a few types such as Egyptian geese mute swans that display dominant behaviour during the mating season
They defend their nest and their young if you approach
