ROCHESTER — Most dog owners would prefer their pooch doesn’t wake them up at around 3 a.m
He’s probably alive today because of Ellie's quick action
The 8-pound dog woke Dison up just before 3 a.m
barking and jumping on and around his head while he slept
At first he was groggily aware and annoyed by the dog’s antics
Dison forced himself awake fearing his home had a gas leak
“I reached for my phone and as soon as my feet hit the floor
Dison said he was unable to stand and disoriented but had the presence of mind to call 911
According to the Rochester Fire Department
for a gas leak at his home on Fox Pointe Lane Southwest
Firefighters found Dison on the floor near his bedroom
They helped him to a chair they set outside the open front door to give him fresh air
Firefighters opened his front and back double doors to air out his home
Minnesota Energy responded to find a line to Dison’s gas fireplace had been accidentally opened
Dison said he had people over to his home to help him do some work in his furnace room downstairs
It appeared the line to the fireplace had been accidentally nudged open and leaked gas into the house
Dison said he apologized to the firefighters for “being a baby about this,” he said
They told him it was a good thing he called and was roused when he was because the gas leak could have been fatal
Three-year-old Ellie likely saved his life
has been Dison’s companion since his older dogs
“Ellie was kind of lost without (Levi),” he said
“I think we’ve kind of comforted each other.”
Dison said even before they lost the elderly canine
He named her after he spied a tombstone in Oakwood Cemetery for a 9-month-old infant named Eleanor who died in the 19th century
Dison said he lost his son at just under 4 months old to sudden infant death syndrome
Dison said he felt a deep kinship with Eleanor’s parents for their loss
He decided to name his new puppy after the infant
he was the son of Carl and Etna (Smith) Sisk. Fred was an U

he announced at Tuesday’s County Board meeting
submit to you my intent to retire… effective Nov
2016,” he read from a brief letter with a voice not quite breaking
said after the meeting that he has serious back problems that could put him at dire health risk in a physical confrontation
adding he had never considered retirement before
“According to my doctor and the guy who’s giving me shots
capping a total of 36 years in law enforcement
Except for early two-year stints with the Kewanee Police Department and Henry County Sheriff’s Office
all of that service has been with Stark County
One high-profile episode occurred in March 2002
when Curt Thompson of Toulon murdered a young deputy and two neighbors before being wounded in a shootout with police
A photo of Deputy Adam Streicher hangs on Dison’s office wall
then chief deputy and armed with a shotgun he had used to shoot an animal earlier in the day
was the first to approach Thompson in the squad car he had hijacked earlier
Thompson committed suicide in prison while under a death sentence
“You’ve given your heart and soul to this job
and we thank you,” board Chairwoman Coleen Magnussen told Dison during the meeting
Dison said the major change he has seen over the years has been the increasing financial challenges
especially in a mostly rural county with a small tax base and steadily declining population
and its expenses are intensely scrutinized by the board
“I think that’s going to be the biggest challenge (for a new sheriff),” he added
Magnussen said Wednesday the board had expected Dison’s announcement
so there had already been some thought about appointing a replacement
She plans to consult with County Republican Chairman Mike Bigger as one step in selecting someone who is qualified to serve the next two years and also would seek election in 2018
“The County Board will be selecting a candidate for sheriff that has the upmost integrity
and committed to the citizens of Stark County,” she wrote
“It will also be important to select a candidate that will properly run the department to stay within (the budget)
The candidate must also be a team player and have proven law enforcement experience and outstanding performance.”
and he plans to spend a little more time on the 24-foot pontoon boat that he famously doesn’t use very often
“Am I looking forward to (retirement)?” he asked
