This forms the fundament to develop Huysmanhoeve as an open, flexible, and multi-purpose gathering place. This project is about 4 buildings on the site. Two existing barns are renovated, and two new structures are added to this historical site. It is built as an open steel structure with two conditioned spaces inside The materialization of the building forms a strong contrast with the existing barn and proportions of the new structure are based on the existing transverse barn The second new building is called the 'shack' This new building essentially has the same structure as the shed The wood-chip storage is integrated into a chimney-like tower that gives the building a sculptured expression You'll now receive updates based on what you follow Personalize your stream and start following your favorite authors If you have done all of this and still can't find the email Under the challenge ‘fighting energy poverty’, the European Commission has selected the three winners of the European Social Innovation Competition from a shortlist of 15 projects suggesting solutions focusing on consumption The announcement took place on 14 November, in the context of the European Conference “Social Economy: People, Planet, Action” organised by the Spanish Presidency in San Sebastian The winners of this prize acknowledging social innovation as a powerful approach to respond to societal challenges are: Ecodes The latter two are related to projects funded by the Horizon 2020 programme The City of Eeklo is one of five locations for pilots in the POWER UP project that are developing innovative business models to fight energy poverty together with households affected by energy poverty and with local stakeholders (municipalities facilitating access to energy efficiency measures and renewable energy The Eeklo pilot in particular focuses on a financial scheme for vulnerable and indebted households based on revenues of an existing wind turbine owned by Eeklo and the Belgium citizen cooperative Ecopower to enhance access to local green energy at a fair price the barriers for households to become a member of an energy community and access local green energy are removed and debts can be limited accompanying measures for households (communication campaigns etc.) are put in place to support them in reducing their energy consumption In this way vulnerable households are actively participating in and benefiting of the local clean energy transition The overall objective of EmpowerMed was to tackle energy poverty and to help improve the health of people in the coastal areas of Mediterranean countries The goal was to implement practical solutions to empower over 10,000 people to tackle energy poverty in the Mediterranean assessing the impacts of those measures to formulate local Practical actions are being implemented in 6 pilot areas with the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders various solutions and trainings were organised including trainings for photovoltaic panel installation and use and collective advisory assemblies open to anyone who is experiencing difficulties in relation to the access and affordability of domestic energy services More information on the want to open the floor to a peaceful dialogue And let’s be honest…on the beach you see much more than what our poster shows!” said teacher An Plaetinck along with eight other teachers from Ten Doorn College in Eeklo to very physically demonstrate support for the My Body My Rights campaign it was the students who wanted to take their clothes off as an activist statement but after some discussion both teachers and students agreed it would be better if the teachers did it themselves to support the student’s message that there is no taboo when it comes to talking about sexual and reproductive rights The students reacted very positively towards their teachers’support “The My Body My Rights campaign is about the right to be free to do what you want with your own body and we are doing exactly that.” These teachers were not the only ones finding ways to break the silence The young activist below came up with an idea to expose the truth of daily experiences which she found unacceptable “One day I was walking with my friend through the city centre of Brussels Walking through the neighbourhood we received more than five disrespectful comments from men who were passing by and now and then a car honked at us” explains 15 year old Jeanne Copenns who believes fighting for sexual and reproductive rights is a priority for Belgian society “My friends and I are confronted with sexual comments on a daily basis But sometimes it doesn’t end with just comments: we get touched up on the street or on public transportation by strangers Some girls think this is normal and don’t take it as an insult For me this is just unacceptable,” said Jeanne these are issues that are deeply embedded in Belgium’s cultural norms: “I’ve learnt that a lot of girls are victims of sexual harassment It can go from inappropriate comments to unwanted contact or even worse It happens to boys too and it is a very taboo problem for them because they strongly believe that we live in an objectifying culture where they aren’t allowed to show their ‘weakness.’” Jeanne started raising awareness about street harassment in her school going classroom to classroom to talk with the students about their daily experiences They developed a large board called ‘The Taboo Wall’ on which anyone could share any sexual harassment they had experienced by writing it on a piece of paper and displaying it on the board By sharing personal experiences the goal was to empower anyone who has been a victim of sexual harassment by giving them a voice and together raise awareness on a problem many people are not aware of I feel unsafe in certain areas of Brussels He was stupefied and had no idea that I had to deal with those situations on a regular basis” explains Jeanne but took their message out of the classroom and onto the street determined to “show how big the problem is in society.” Jeanne organised the event in a busy area of central Brussels displaying ‘The Taboo Wall’ and engaging with all the passers-by as well as the local media Jeanne’s ability to spread the message and engage deeply with the issue is critical to ensuring that the world’s 1.8 billion young people know about their sexual and reproductive rights and can gather the knowledge and skills to lead campaigns to claim and promote their rights alongside their peers Both Jeanne and the teachers opened debates started conversations and broke the silence around sexual and reproductive rights with children challenging attitudes in their own way with their own networks of contacts as well as gaining the attention of media and the public Amnesty Belgium has brought youth to the centre of the campaign to raise awareness on rights violations and mobilise support for cases of injustice By including human rights education in three major events: the campaign launch a Youth leadership camp and a day dedicated to ‘Write Them Free’ Amnesty Belgium brought sexual and reproductive rights home to young people to empower them to claim their rights for themselves more than 400 young people and teachers from Brussels and Flanders participated in the My Body My Rights launch Amnesty trained young activists to engage with their peers they empowered students and mobilised local activists with in-depth knowledge about sexual and reproductive rights In mid-July Amnesty organised a Youth Leadership Camp in the coastal city of Oostende to empower young people to become leaders in the fight for human rights 20 young activists from all backgrounds devoted their weekend to in-depth discussion and training on sexual and reproductive rights coming away energised and motivated to share their knowledge and take action As a result they developed workshops and activities in their school and with other Amnesty members to begin to break the silence and discuss the importance of claiming their sexual and reproductive rights In addition they gathered 700 signatures for a petition pressuring for a change in legislation concerning sexual and reproductive rights in Belgium The petition was delivered to the Prime Minister in the last week of November 2014 A poem written by Havva Akcaoglu and Wout Brasseur, students of the H. Pius X Instituut in Belgium in solidarity for the My Body My Rights campaign, collected on the Tumblr for the Write Them Free event This year long human rights education work with young people led to in-depth understanding of human rights violations worldwide as well as leading activists to draw parallels between what is happening in Belgium and what is happening in the rest of the world “My experience has led me to realise how important it is to have human rights defenders all over the world – and that small acts do make a difference in helping to make people realise they have choices and escape routes when they are desperate It was wonderful to see so many other young people passionate about human rights Karolien spoke of her desire to take further action to bring about meaningful change I certainly plan to continue doing actions with Amnesty and also to further my knowledge on human rights abuses and what I can do in the future to help prevent and remedy these.’ Amnesty International launched the My Body My Rights campaign in March 2014 It aims to empower individuals to make informed choices about their sexuality and reproduction and to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights freely ‘Module Three: Respect My Rights Respect My Dignity  – Sexual and reproductive rights are human rights’ is designed to be used by and with young people and youth activists as they support their peers through individual and collective journeys of reflection This includes having the knowledge and skills to engage in difficult conversations on a taboo subject and to stand up for sexual and reproductive rights. Together we can fight for human rights everywhere Your donation can transform the lives of millions If you are talented and passionate about human rights then Amnesty International wants to hear from you I just didn’t want my money heading to a French company month after month." reporters around the world will be writing about societal problems videos and podcasts looking behind the curtain of globalization The project is generously funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation high ceilings and Art Deco design elements Their energy costs for the extensive home: just 170 euros per month less than half of what they would have been paying under their old contract The fact that Europe’s skyrocketing energy prices have not affected the retired couple isn’t only because of the heavy burgandy curtains hanging in the living room and their limited heating during the winter "It’s Ecopower," says Vandercammen with a smile the couple are members of Belgium’s largest energy co-operative The co-op produces and delivers green energy to its members at cost When compared to the large corporations in the industry three times more people wanted to join the co-operative than could be supplied with electricity "It is important to me that the profits stay here in Eeklo." Vandercammen’s hometown in northern Flanders The "Eco" in the name once stood for the ecological convictions of its founders the name can easily be understood as a reference to the sustainable energy it produces Ecopower and other co-operatives offer reliability jack up prices out of fear or throw out customers Ecopower continues to provide cheap energy from renewable sources "We make long-term contracts," says Jan de Pauw who works for Ecopower as a project developer "We only provide energy to our members at a dependable price without earning much profit." It’s also a rather small operation regionally focused instead of seeking to expand multi~nationally Many of its customers live within sight of the wind turbines and solar farms from which they get their energy Belgium is a leader when it comes to the concept of energy co-ops as de Pauw says during a tour of a facility Belgium is home to the best conditions in Europe for harnessing wind energy across which the wind blows down from the North Sea I just didn’t want my money going to a French company month after month," says de Pauw Belgium is divided into French-speaking Wallonia and Dutch-speaking Flanders The differences between the two populations have produced a sense of regional pride de Pauw is convinced that the model could provide a more universal solution that would work in large parts of Europe and beyond Jan De Pauw: "The one wind turbine only benefits the company to which it belongs and we pay out 10,000 euros per year from it to the people who live here." One reason he highlights is the extremely small number of protests against the wind turbines that the Ecopower co-operative has erected here De Pauw has collected the data to prove it: "Ten times fewer" complaints were lodged against Ecopower’s plans when compared to conventional projects "Even those who weren’t members of the co-op accepted the projects." The "not-in-my-backyard" (NIMBY) problem is one that has dogged the expansion of windfarms in many parts of Europe in recent years complaints from locals have led to a situation in which the installation of wind power facilities has come to a virtual standstill The city produces more green energy than it consumes The town now produces more energy than it consumes Support from locals is far from being just some sort of Flemish tic Locals know that the expansion of wind power benefits everybody in town he points to two different wind turbines of the exact same model both of which reach 120 meters into the sky "What is the difference between the two?" de Pauw asks He immediately answers his own question: "The one wind turbine only benefits the company to which it belongs To convince locals of the value of his co-op he organized a number of town hall meetings over the course of several months to explain the concept and respond to concerns Ecopower and Eeklo agreed to a joint concept: For each wind turbine the operators pay 5,000 euros into a local fund for climate protection each year and the same amount into a community fund for other needs Ecopower has agreed to finance an engineer for the city for 20 years whose job it is to help the town shift to renewable energy sources and develop a district heating system electricity from Ecopower was only slightly cheaper than that from conventional providers not necessarily for saving significant amounts of money But ever since electricity prices have skyrocketed as a result of the war in Ukraine and other factors Whereas the large providers have tripled their prices in some cases the co-op has only made slight increases to cover infrastructure and management costs The basic price of electricity from their wind turbines only has to cover construction and maintenance costs Bob D'Haeseleer: "Ecopower was a godsend for our community." who was deputy mayor of Eeklo when Ecopower was set up closely followed the co-op’s development for nearly 10 years "Ecopower was a godsend for our community," he says "It saved us from a number of destructive debates and brought more revenues to the city than a conventional provider." He says the city council vote to participate in the deal with the co-op and expand wind power was unanimous Farmers are fighting about who is allowed to sell property to wind turbine operators which was to become part of the co-op and be built with the corporation Veolia And the electricity providers who won the concession for the wind park along with Ecopower aren’t paying into the local fund as promised even though Eeklo has run into some problems the concept of energy co-ops is gaining in popularity elsewhere in Europe A plaque next to an Ecopower wind turbine explains the idea behind the co-op the European Commission has been seeking to expand energy co-ops into an additional pillar of the European electricity supply And the arguments in Brussels are the same as those in Eeklo: greater local support and participation and a more responsible approach to energy Ecopower is now setting up a European association of comparable organizations with their number having multiplied in recent years people are joining forces in organizations to produce energy there is also an increasing number of FinCoops energy companies that customers can invest in to earn dividends we cannot and do not want to take over the entire energy market." Currently co-ops are supplying only 2 percent of households in Belgium with the participation of co-ops in new projects now legally mandated 100 needy families are currently receiving co-op shares instead of cost subsidies are twice as thrifty as other power consumers so involving needy families in co-ops could facilitate the exchange of tips and ideas for awareness when it comes to energy consumption But the biggest upcoming project is elsewhere Ecopower is planning to build an offshore wind park off the coast of Belgium The plan calls for 240 wind turbines producing 15 megawatts of electricity each eight times more powerful than the facilities in Eeklo The co-ops are to pool 450 million euros in a consortium the park would produce enough electricity for 800,000 households other elements of the energy co-op are more important "It is important to me that the profits stay here in Eeklo," she says The Global Societies series involves journalists reporting in Asia societal challenges and sustainable development in a globalized world which originally appear in DER SPIEGEL’s Foreign Desk section will also appear in the Global Societies section of DER SPIEGEL International The project is initially scheduled to run for three years and receives financial support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) is funding the project for a period of three years at a total cost of around €2.3 million The foundation exerts no influence whatsoever on the stories and other elements that appear in the series Large European media outlets like the Guardian and El País have similar sections on their websites -- called "Global Development" and "Planeta Futuro," respectively -- that are likewise funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation DER SPIEGEL has complete two projects with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the European Journalism Centre (EJC): "Expedition BeyondTomorrow," about global sustainability goals and the journalist refugee project "The New Arrivals," which resulted in several award-winning features All Global Societies pieces will be published in the Globale Gesellschaft section of the DER SPIEGEL website; a selection of articles will be made available in English on the International website Global Societies Dreams and visions are the theme of this show and sheds light on one of the opening works in “Dreamsongs: From Medicine to Demons to Artificial Intelligence” The Legend of the Baker of Eeklo (1570-80) shows a graphic-novel sequence of figures lining up at a bakery to be decapitated and then fitted with a temporary cabbage on their torso to stem the bleeding its moral is to be content with your appearance as the new head from the magical baker’s may not always work out The fine detailing of the figures and objects including baskets of cabbages and severed heads and the everyday production-line nature of the scene and prophecies have featured in art since Antiquity argues that exploring the inner world allowed artists both to explore the hidden and unseen escaping the approved subjects of court and religion and also to reflect the preoccupations of their time The guiding spirit of Colnaghi Gallery’s exhibition is a quotation from the Canadian video artist Natalie Melikian: ‘”Dreams do not exceed the context from which they were formed.” Courtesy of ColnaghiEvelyn Dunbar (1906-1960) Arranged according to Macrobius’s five categories of dreams (dream misleading dream and nightmare) rather than chronologically this densely packed exhibition aims to echo the experience of a dream A sightline that takes in Lucas Cranach the Elder’s Melancholia (1532) before falling to a Seville School statue of Infant Christ Sleeping (1659-69) by Morelli certainly feels free-flowing and unscripted. Because well-defined redevelopment recipes don’t work and therefore, customization is fundamental in heritage conservation, the City of Eeklo organized a competition to ensure that its planned reconversion from the church building to out-of-school childcare runs smoothly. To say the least: ‘a challenge! Where it used to be quiet in and around the Sint Joseph church, children would now enjoy themselves. The use would shift from the weekend to the week, as well as entail quite a different mobility. Where churchgoers used to wear a thick coat during mass, toddlers in shorts will soon be crawling across the floor.  The visual readability and spatial effect were monitored. High walls, cabinets, or volumes that would crumble or divide the space were avoided. The sloping floor and the concrete benches have also been retained. To create the new living and exercise floors, they were covered with a wooden structure, which can be removed at any time. Circularity at its best! He says this dramatic decline in turnout is unusual when compulsory voting is first abolished when you move from compulsory voting to voluntary voting participation drops gradually over the years It doesn't usually take such a sharp dive immediately." more than 8.3 million citizens were eligible to vote both EU and non-EU citizens living in Belgium for at least five years Voters were not only selecting their municipal councils but also participating in provincial elections The local elections on 13 October 2024 © PHOTO BELPRESS Copy linkGet updates in your mailboxYour email addressSubscribeBy clicking "Subscribe" I confirm I have read and agree to the Privacy Policy rapid and high-quality information 24 hours a day from Belgium and abroad to all Belgian media not to mention entertainment and lifestyle our journalists and press photographers produce hundreds of photos and news stories Since the end of March 2022 English has been added as a language businesses and various organisations that need reliable information Belga News Agency also offers a comprehensive range of corporate services to meet all their communication needs www.belganewsagency.eu The naked giant that brought a smile to the face of drivers on the E17 Motorway at Deerlijk (West Flanders) for eight years is off to his new home After some thorough renovation he’ll be joining the payroll of ADREM Kitchens in Eeklo (East Flanders) stands 8.5 metres tall and fetched nearly 30,000 euros at auction is pleased his giant is staying in Flanders The giant is getting a place at the ADREM Kitchens factory in Eeklo Proprietor Michiel had hoped to pick up the Cyclops with a trailer three hours to get the giant onto their truck First destination is Dendermonde (East Flanders) where the giant is being professionally cleaned to remove moss from between his toes and behind his ears as well as be totally renovated Once arrived at ADREM in Eeklo the giant will be given a place in the company’s marketing strategy Michiel can’t believe the amount of free advertising the giant has already generated thanks to the media frenzy around the auction and his move The giant should be on show at the BISbeurs fair in Ghent soon and there are even plans for a foreign trip to Alicante in Spain   2021 X20 Badkamers Trofee Cyclocross Krawatencross at Lille, Belgium - It was a winter wonderland as the elite women's race got underway in the snow. - Click for high resolution - more X20 Badkamers Trophy Cyclocross Lille Photos - photo Copyright © 2021 Cor Vos/cyclingfans.com  - For more cyclocross live coverage, various series and events, see Cyclocross LIVE - Videos: Cyclocross Videos - Expected LIVE video here.  (Pickx RTL club - Expected LIVE video here and here.  (Sporza - Need a VPN to access a geo-restricted feed?
