About 40,000 aviation enthusiasts are expected this weekend in Hechtel-Eksel
to witness feats by dozens of stunt teams during the International Sanicole Airshow
The first teams will take off on Saturday at around 17.00 and there will be a lot of planes and helicopters on display on the ground
“Highlights in the context of the 80th anniversary of the liberation [from Nazi occupation during World War Two] are definitely the Lancaster and the B17,” said airshow director Geoffrey Buekenberghs
“It's the first time those two bombers have been in a show together in continental Europe and there's also the 60th anniversary of the Patrouille Suisse
Three demonstration flights will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the F-16 and there are a lot of firsts among the aircraft in the static display on the ground
better known in Belgium as the Agusta A109
One of the historic Vultee BT-13A aircraft
which played a role during Operation Market Garden 80 years ago and was essential for training Allied pilots during World War Two
The Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk will make its debut at the show
mainly used to transport troops and for medical evacuations
Some are available for Saturday's Sunset Airshow

the commune of Hechtel-Eksel and Proximity joined forces in a unique partnership to stimulate companies
politicians and organisations to embrace sustainability in their daily activities
What better way to do this than to build a treehouse
According to the international paper producer Sappi
which started the project with Proximity BBDO
a treehouse would make their sustainability efforts more tangible
As professional showjumpers that run their own business and stable
as well as having two small children to care for
Angelica Augustsson Zanotelli and Marlon Modolo Zanotelli are used to a hectic lifestyle
a normal routine of international shows every single weekend – as well as travels all over the world – has now been swapped to farm life at home at the Swedish-Brazilian couple’s stable in Eksel
While both Angelica and Marlon initially found the sudden change a bit difficult to adapt to
they have over the last weeks embraced the situation and are making the most of the time they finally get to spend together.
“At the beginning of the lockdown we had a bit of a weird feeling,” Angelica tells
after accepting that this will be the situation for an uncertain period of time we decided to make the best out of it
found good routines and actually really enjoy it!”
“We don’t know when they will be starting up again
it will still be at least a couple of months with no shows so we don’t want to do too much with them
we use more time on our younger horses and really try to get them going.”
“I don’t think our older horses will suffer much from this break
but it of course depends on how long it will stretch out,” Marlon says
we hear a lot of different things as to when the shows might start up again
it would be great to have the opportunity to just go training again – even if it’s just down the road – for them to see something else
It does not even necessarily have to be a show
As to the 8 and 9-year-old horses I guess the break will have bigger consequences
they are at a stage where they really need to gather the experience and step up
“I don’t think the horses themselves mind this break at all,” Angelica laughs
going on gallops in the woods and on the racetrack and spending time in the field with fantastic weather!”
divided between ourselves and our three clients
and in addition our clients have their own grooms
my parents and my brother,” Marlon tells about the set-up at the young family’s base in Belgium
but two employees left home for holiday after we came back from Oliva in the beginning of March and have been unable to return due to the travel restrictions.”
“We take precautions,” Marlon tells about the new routines they all have been forced to adapt to
and we have kept it clear as to what they can do and cannot do outside working hours
Everyone takes this seriously and accepts that we have to be careful – especially seeing that we live with my parents here at the farm
I prefer to not take any chances,” Marlon says
there is plenty of space for everyone here
and we keep our distance if we are in the stable at the same time
There is a lot of disinfecting going on too
and separately – unlike our usual lunchbreak that we normally enjoy together.”
this situation might bring with it financial difficulties
Several riders have more or less no income at the moment
seeing that there is nothing coming in from prize money or trade – however
We are in a lucky situation; my father has been responsible for our company’s finances and he has built up a good reserve for us which I can really see the importance of now,” Marlon tells
clients are still interested in our horses – even without shows – but with all the travel restrictions no one can come to try them so nothing gets sold,” Marlon explains
and I don’t think this will affect the horse market too much
What we perhaps will see is an immediate drop in the prices on the more average horses
as well as some trying to make a scoop if others really are in need of money and having to sell
I believe the business will stay strong though
“I actually see a lot of positives coming out of this situation
As a top-level rider it’s easy to just keep on going
“This situation has forced us – and especially me – to slow down
I will be much better at giving myself a break between all the shows – although I know that’s easy to say now
“It feels like we are much more relaxed than before,” Angelica adds
“We take more time with the horses and also have more time for each other in between
We bought the farm here 1 ½ years ago
and honestly did not have much time for it
we have lots of time for different projects here and we really enjoy it!”
“This situation has really made me stop and think,” Marlon says
I realise that a lot of the time I have just been chasing my career doing as much as possible
The last weeks have made me take a step back
stop and think about what is really important in life.”

Bosland is the largest forest of Belgium’s Flanders region
and it now features an elevated pathway blended into the landscape yet clearly distinct from it
The idea was to give hikers and bikers an unprecedented
This new exploration experience takes place along a 600-meter route that forms a ring whose diameter is 100 meters
in its circular perfection the ring may look schematic
the walker or cyclist goes up a relatively gentle
surrounded first by trunks and then by branches
in a journey full of surprises made possible by a structure raised off the ground and held up by footings of CorTen steel
a material chosen for its color and durability

this treehouse project has given us some serious office envy
Belgium the Treehouse is essentially a stylish meeting room in the treetops
The center features two large wooden eco-cabins which sit on different levels and are connected by a series of outdoor terraces and walkways
A winding staircase wraps its way around tree trunks to provide access to the center
while the overall structure sits on top of 19 angled steel stilts
The main upper cabin can accommodate up to 25 people and is dedicated to conference meetings and other events
The lower cabin is furnished with a coffee lounge
While the Treehouse is not fitted with desks or projection screens or even office chairs
it does hope to offer a space for thinking
With that being said we think the Treehouse model could definitely work as an everyday office space or even as a backyard guest house
“The sustainable features of the treehouse include good eco-insulation and a very good heating system,” Baumraum’s senior architect Andreas Wenning told Gizmag
“And we only used FSC [Forest Stewardship Council] or PEFC [Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification] certified Wood.”
The new environmental technologies applied for the cabin’s heating and cooling systems utilize a heat pump unit that is located in an underground space
The unit extracts heat from the air which is then transported through tubes leading through one of the steel columns and into the cabin space
The result is a low temperature heating system that provides a mild climate and minimal energy costs
The same system also works fluidly for cooling the cabins during the summer time
To further minimize the energy consumption all lighting has been fitted with LEDs
Wenning also promises that there will be more fascinating treetop projects to come from Baumraum
“We are going to build a high nature observation tower here in Germany,” said Wenning
“And a big sauna relax room in the trees!”
The Treehouse center in Belgium will open its doors to companies or non-profit organizations wishing to use the space to discuss green ideas
Reservations will be available from the 15th November 2012 and in return companies renting the space are asked to share their eco-friendly findings on the dedicated Treehouse online platform

The only annual international air show in Belgium has reached its 39th edition this year
The International Sanicole Airshow will take place at the airfields of the Sanicole Aeroclub in Hechtel-Eksel on 9 and 11 September
with demonstrations from both the military and private aviation sectors
The air show attracts about 40,000 visitors
which means it is one of the largest events in the Limburg Province
The air show is organised by Aeroclub Sanicole in cooperation with the Belgian air force
About 450 volunteers take part during this event
The organisation has become more and more professional over the past 39 years
Year after year the air show attracts more and more people
says Airshow Director Geoffrey Buekenberghs
“We have evolved from a stunt show in the seventies into a leading international aviation event
because we have a very loyal audience from home and abroad
but we also attract new visitors every year.”
since 2010 Sanicole has also organised a sunset air show on the Friday
which is becoming increasingly popular with the public
Geoffrey: “There is something magical about an air show at sunset
In combination with the light show and the fireworks
find it very impressive to be a part of it
The concept of the sunset air show is unique in Europe.”
the spectators will get to see a total spectacle as well
parachutists … Just about all the facets of aviation are addressed
they will get a chance to meet their heroes
there are some eye catchers in this 39th edition
the attention will undoubtedly be drawn by the B-1 bomber from the US Air Force
the Spanish F-18 and the PC-7 Team of the Swiss air force
the somewhat older jets you hardly ever get to see in Western Europe
We expect a real spectacle from the Breitling WingWalkers
the only wing walking formation in the world
She is the aerobatics female world champion
I’m quite curious about the spectacular demonstration of the BAF F-16 Solo Display Team
They come from the air base at Kleine-Brogel and thus
The warbirds from the Red Bull collection – P-38 Lightning and F4 Corsair – also appeal to the imagination
