A southern Alberta egg farmer was jailed after missing a court date in his fight with the provincial egg marketing agency over how many hens he is allowed to keep outside of the quota system
Henk Van Essen was released late last week after he promised to let inspectors from Egg Farmers of Alberta inspect his operation
which is located between Turin and Iron Springs
The agency is also seeking details on his sales volumes and his customers for the past four years
which is quite a ways from the closest town,” said Van Essen

The CFIA recently renewed his premise licence for two years
You can’t make a living under 300 chickens,” he said
“Whatever they count over 300 they are going to ‘de-populize.’ ”
Hens typically range between 250 and 330 eggs per year
with a prime laying window between 20 and 78 weeks of age
“I’m having a hard time making mortgage payments right now
He said he tried twice unsuccessfully to get quota under the EFA new entrant program
which allocates a percentage of new quota allocations to applicants in lots of up to 1,500 birds
Purchasing quota outright when it comes available through the quota exchange is too expensive
producers must pay a levy of $0.005 per dozen eggs to the Alberta Egg Commission
“I’m just a little farmer trying to make a living,” he said
“There is a big shortage of eggs (avian flu outbreaks in British Columbia and the United States)
and all the existing producers just got another 10 per cent (quota) given to them
but they won’t let a little guy running a couple thousand chickens with the best eggs in town.”
He has wanted to be a chicken farmer his whole life,” said neighbour Erik Sinke
who added locals refer to Van Essen as “Chicken Henk.”

and directly selling his egg production in competition with regulated egg farmers

Van Essen was wholly unco-operative and intransigent in his position that he could do as he pleased without regard to the law
eventually forcing EFA’s hand to compel his compliance with Alberta’s egg regulations via court application that has now spanned nearly four years.”

Steffen Essen used to drive to the liquor store in his pickup at 7:30 a.m.
2024 – the facility’s first-year anniversary – with his one-year sobriety coin in hand
He wanted to share it with the SummitStone Health Partners team at Longview as a token of his deep appreciation
who bounced between stints in substance-use treatment and glimpses of sobriety for much of his adult life
Substance-use disorder, or addiction, doesn't discriminate based on age, race, spirituality or income. Essen is one among about 40.3 million people, ages 12 years and older, who reportedly have a substance-use disorder in the U.S., national data show.
The disease is treatable but often brings with it layers of complexity and hardship for the people suffering from it and those around them
Essen was maybe 7 years old when he got his first taste of alcohol
Thirsty from cutting firewood while camping with his dad
he couldn’t reach the water and grabbed what he didn’t know then was boxed wine

He and his traveling buddies would drive 1,000 miles and crawl

They used ibuprofen and Tylenol to numb their pain.

It got in the way of work and relationships
So many people do get hijacked by alcohol,” said Essen

Essen apologized often for pausing while telling his story in March 2025

His 40s were a blur of sober periods and a revolving door of regional treatment centers

Tova du Plessis's highly anticipated bakery is finally opening its doors in Kensington
owner and pastry chef of Essen Bakery and Essen North / Photograph by Mike Prince
Honestly, so have I. January 2023 was when Philly Mag first reported that the beloved East Passyunk bakery would be expanding into Kensington
a four-time James Beard-nominated pastry chef
sit-down cafe with house-made sandwiches for breakfast and lunch
It would lean heavily into bagels and sell lox and schmear and fresh-roasted Elixr coffee
making it an excellent space for remote workers and a hella convenient pit stop for commuters on their way to the Berks station
Essen North will finally open its doors on the corner of Berks and Hope Streets
A lot has happened since Essen’s expansion was announced — in the world
What we didn’t know back in January 2023 was that du Plessis had just been diagnosed with narcolepsy type 1
a lifelong disorder of the sleep/wake cycle
she went to a sleep clinic to figure out why she often felt exhausted
and would experience muscle weakness whenever she got overexcited (a symptom of cataplexy
Aside from telling those closest to her, du Plessis kept her diagnosis private. It wasn’t until the first anniversary that she went public with the life-changing news. “I am diagnosed with narcolepsy type 1. I have known this all year,” she wrote on Essen Bakery’s Instagram this past January
Getting a diagnosis of a chronic neurological disorder is a lot to handle
But what about getting that diagnosis while being a mother who runs one of Philadelphia’s most successful bakeries and is actively building out a second
It was so hard,” she told me shortly after she went public
In addition to managing an already pretty hectic lifestyle
she now had to figure out a treatment plan that worked for her
(As if striking a work-life balance wasn’t hard enough.)
2023 – Pastry chef Tova du Plessis at a construction site that would become Essen North
I stopped by Essen North this past March to see how things were progressing
it was still a construction site — a skeleton of wooden beams
and cement floors covered in a potpourri of sawdust and drywall — but du Plessis had a pretty clear vision of what her new 2,800-square-foot cafe would look like
“This is going to be the counter,” she said
pointing to a steel frame jutting out in the middle of the room
“This is where we’ll prepare coffee — we’ll be serving our own roast made by Elixr,” she added before leading me MTV Cribs-style into the shaping room
“This is where you’ll be able to see the magic happen,” she said
pointing to a window through which guests can watch bakers braid Essen’s iconic chocolate-halva babka
through a wide doorway cut out of a brick wall
“We’ll have communal dining tables here for seating during the day
but we can also use this as an event space,” she said
adding that they’ve designed the space specifically for private events and classes in mind
Brad and Tova du Plessis / Photograph by Mike Prince
The thing that has always struck me about du Plessis is the unwavering confidence she has in herself to tackle head-on whatever is thrown her way
whether it be navigating narcolepsy or the persistent challenges that have delayed this project for nearly two years (you know
and Philly being Philly — the usual reasons why most things get delayed in the restaurant industry)
Everything she showed me back in March is still a go
Everything she announced would happen two years ago is finally coming to fruition
who quit his job earlier this year to become a partner and the managing director of both locations
Essen North is finally making its big debut
Stop by 110 West Berks Street this Friday at 8 a.m
they’ll be open seven days a week from 8 a.m

Rumors spread that the Israeli far-right politician might not be coming at all
MIDWOOD, Brooklyn — Itamar Ben-Gvir’s trip to the United States took him to the headquarters of the Chabad movement in Brooklyn on Thursday evening, where the far-right Israeli security minister toured the building’s library and synagogue and posed with rabbis in front of a Torah ark
The visit to 770 Eastern Parkway was a prelude to another iconic destination: cholent night at Essen New York Deli in Midwood
Essen serves up the traditional Ashkenazi Shabbat stew that has become a fixture of late-night life in some Orthodox communities
The message promoted “a Cholent & chill matzav,” the Hebrew word for situation
that would include “a meeting and greeting & photos with the guest of honor.” All were welcome
The tone was very different than at Ben-Gvir’s other local appearances. A Manhattan talk organized by Shabtai, a Jewish secret society based at Yale University
shielded its location until just hours before it began
then doled the details out only to registered guests
presumably in an attempt to head off protests by Israelis
Jews and others who say Ben-Gvir’s extremism places him outside the acceptable bounds of discourse
And multiple synagogues that announced they would be hosting him publicly canceled the plans after pushback — including one near 770 that was raising money for Chabad in Hebron
the West Bank city that is a flashpoint of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
Even at 770, local news reports emphasized that his visit was not officially organized by Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters, anchored in the building.Pro-Palestinian protesters, organized in part by the extremist group Within Our Lifetime, rallied outside
the doors were wide open — if not designated just for Ben-Gvir
The maître d’ clarified that customers would need to pay for their meal
that Ben-Gvir would be dining there “as a guest” and that the event was not hosted by the restaurant
would come “around 10:00 and 11:00 PM.” As the evening progressed
the clientele evolved from young families out for dinner
Not everyone said they were there for Ben-Gvir, who until recent years was considered too extreme even for Israel’s right-wing politicians because of his association with the extremist rabbi Meir Kahane and previous admiration of Baruch Goldstein
a Kahanist who murdered 29 Muslims at prayer in Hebron in 1994
I couldn’t care less about politics,” said Zeev
an Essen patron who declined to share his last name
Zeev had come to Essen with a group of friends
formalized in a WhatsApp chat called “Essen Thursday Night,” has been coming to the restaurant every week since they were seniors in high school
Essen New York Deli is a popular cholent spot on Thursday nights in Midwood
“We all just come here to just eat cholent,” said Joseph
like Katz’s Deli and all these delis around that are barely even kosher
Essen’s the spot for all of us that we all come to every Thursday night.”
there was still no sign of the Israeli national security minister
People were texting and calling their friends and neighbors to come see what was happening
“I came for the hangout because I thought there were going to be other people here and I’d be able to meet some people,” said Jonathan
a Borough Park resident who arrived with his friends and declined to give his last name
who met at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue
a Reform congregation on the Upper West Side
Jonathan praised Trump but demurred when asked his thoughts about Ben-Gvir
“I haven’t given it a second thought,” he said
the streets were packed with young men still hoping to get a glimpse of the Israeli politician
who is a hero to those on the hardline right who believe Israel should prioritize defeating Hamas over all else and advance Jewish resettlement in the Gaza Strip
(Those positions are held by only a minority of Israelis
who won Midwood and other heavily Orthodox communities in the United States in last year’s election
has called for Palestinians in Gaza to be resettled elsewhere en masse and for the United States to take over the enclave.)
Rumors spread that Ben-Gvir might not be coming at all
swarmed the vehicle and the minister’s entourage as they spilled out and he headed into the restaurant’s back room
The protests that dogged Ben-Gvir in Manhattan and New Haven were replaced by excited yells and applause
“You’re my hero!” one man called over the clamor
Restaurant staff locked the exterior door momentarily
preventing the crowds outside from pressing into the restaurant
Some climbed atop the Avenue J and Coney Island Avenue bus stop bench for a better look inside
Crowds pressed against the window of Essen New York Deli in an attempt to catch a glimpse of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir
a kosher food and travel blogger from Los Angeles
arrived just in time to see the last bit of action
an Orthodox religious enclave on neighboring Long Island
said they believed the minister was right to admire Kahane
we all know what’s going to happen: that Jews and Arabs simply can’t really — it sounds very nice to say
[but] it doesn’t really seem like we could live together in a lot of ways,” Yitzchak said
He said there’s going to be terrorist attacks every week
and he’s [Ben-Gvir] kind of continuing that mesorah,” Yitzchak added
using a word denoting tradition or heritage
“I’m not so involved with Israeli politics

Inside, Ben-Gvir shared a meal with dozens of local men, including “community leaders and askunim,” a Yiddish word roughly referring to movers and shakers, according to BoroPark24, an Orthodox news outlet
The outlet said Ben-Gvir had earlier stopped by a hotel two miles away in Borough Park
another Orthodox neighborhood with a vibrant minority of restive far-right activists
and was expected to spend Shabbat in the Five Towns
one synagogue where he had been advertised as speaking canceled the plan abruptly on Thursday
which Ben-Gvir’s office said was because the planned moderator had suffered a death in his immediate family
he posted a victorious message about his crackdown on Israeli prisons

(WMTV) - The development of a property that houses beloved German beer hall and restaurant Essen Haus has been postponed
and the restaurant will remain open indefinitely
Customers and employees with Essen Haus and Come Back In were under the impression that the establishments would be demolished come August. The redevelopment process has now been delayed
“With any development of a substantial size
it’s inevitable that there can be delays,” manager of over 30 years Neale Hansen said
Hansen says staff are happy to take advantage of the postponed closure
“But you’re having people where they’re bringing their parents through 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries
It wasn’t that long ago we had somebody that had their birthday here and they were almost an octogenarian,” he said
it feels good that they trust you to handle these milestone events.”
manager and daughter of owner Bob Worm says many memories have been made over the last 42 years
the potential closure has brought many of them to light
“It was also really outstanding to see staff members that had formerly worked here or come and say
can I come out and help out for a couple shifts
Staff say they will be there until the very end
“And especially when the guests are asking us
I’m just so grateful to have our regular customers and staff just be on board with the unknown.”
The annual Essen Haus Thanksgiving Dinner will happen this year
The manager also said they have already started to book musicians ahead of New Year celebrations

Differentiating neoplastic and non-neoplastic uveal tumours can present a diagnostic challenge; intra-ocular biopsy may be necessary
The novel trans-scleral Essen Forceps biopsy (TSEB) technique can improve diagnostic yield compared to fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB)
We present a case demonstrating the technique and its added value
We also review the success rate of TSEB performed at two tertiary eye centres
Retrospective case report and consecutive case series from August 2021 to March 2023
Inclusion criteria were patients who underwent TSEB of posterior uveal lesions from Moorfields Eye Hospital and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in the United Kingdom
The outcomes were biopsy success rate and complication rate
Eleven biopsies met the inclusion criteria
one melanocytoma and one extranodal marginal zone (ENMZ) lymphoma
One TSEB did not yield tissue for histological examination because of perioperative sample handling
Two (18%) biopsies were histologically inconclusive; both were treated as uveal melanoma on clinical grounds or repeat biopsy
The only complication was vitreous loss and retinal hole without retinal detachment in one eye with a very posterior
TSEB is an effective alternative to established biopsy techniques
yielding larger tissue samples than FNAB with intact tissue architecture
We recommend adding TSEB to the armamentarium of the ocular oncologist
The Essen forceps were designed for transvitreal approach biopsies
we describe our experience of using the Essen forceps to take tumour biopsies ab externo
utilising a partial-thickness scleral flap technique
This study describes the technique and reviews the success and complication rates of trans-scleral Essen biopsy (TSEB) technique performed at two tertiary ocular oncology centres in the UK
We also report an illustrative case highlighting the added value of TSEB in selected cases
We retrospectively reviewed medical and histopathological records of patients undergoing uveal TSEB at two national ocular oncology centres: Moorfields Eye Hospital
The biopsies took place between August 2021 and March 2023
Approval was obtained from the Audit Department of Moorfields Eye Hospital (1331)
The study adhered to the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki
Data collected included patient demographics
success rate (measured as a biopsy that yielded a tissue diagnosis)
Following scleral exposure and marking of the tumour site
a fornix based partial thickness scleral flap is created (A) with the hinge over the thickest part of the tumour
a 2-3 mm full thickness sclerostomy is created with a blade (B) giving access to the intraocular structures
The Essen forceps is passed into the lesion to be biopsied with the jaws open (C)
The forceps are closed and the tissue sample remains within the jaws of the forceps (D)
The tissue is placed on sterile card under the microscope to ensure the samples are safely retrieved (E)
This process is repeated as often as necessary
sampling different parts of the lesion of interest each time
the forceps should be passed along the inside of the sclera
parallel to the plane to avoid perforating retina
To minimise the chance of tumour cell seeding
the flap is closed by applying a small drop of cyanoacrylate glue (F)
The flap is rapidly closed (G) with gentle pressure over the sclerostomy using a cotton bud
further glue can be applied to ensure full closure or 9-0 non-absorbable sutures can be pre-placed at the flap corners
All biopsies obtained with this technique were fixed in standard 4% neutral buffered formalin and processed with standard pathology techniques to paraffin wax blocks
stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H & E) and examined with a standard light microscope
paraffin sections were exposed to appropriate immunohistochemistry and ancillary molecular genetic analysis
A Optos widefield fundal imaging at initial presentation with acute red eye
B Optos widefield fundal imaging three months after presentation following treatment with topical steroids
There was no regression in the choroidal lesion and subtle growth at the superior edge
C B-mode ultrasound of the choroidal mass at presentation
2.1 mm (height) × 11.7 mm (longitudinal base) × 14.3 mm (transverse base)
slow internal blood flow as the recorded velocity in one vessel was 1.8 cm/s
D Histopathology of the specimen from the trans-vitreal biopsy of the right choroid which included tiny clumps of atypical cells
E Histopathology specimen obtained by Trans-scleral Essen Forceps biopsy (TSEB) of the right eye
stained with H & E at low magnification
This shows fibroconnective tissue with scattered melanin and an infiltrate of atypical cells with hyperchromatic nuclei
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) through the area of the mass showed and irregular surface profile and trace subretinal fluid. B-scan ultrasound (US) confirmed a shallow choroidal mass, 2.1 mm in thickness, with a base of 11.7 mm × 14.3 mm, with low to medium echogenicity (Fig. 2C)
There was minimal internal blood flow on Doppler US
the clinical picture suggested an inflammatory aetiology with associated choroidal mass
The differential diagnosis included nodular scleritis
choroidal metastasis from an unknown primary
The patient was commenced on a trial of topical dexamethasone eye drops and monitored closely
Topical steroid treatment improved the symptoms of swelling and redness. However, dilated fundoscopy three months after presentation showed the choroidal lesion had not regressed (Fig. 2B)
The patient was concurrently referred for systemic screening for a possible unknown primary malignancy
and underwent trans-vitreal biopsy of the choroidal mass using a 25 G vitreous cutter
including whole-body positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT)
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) head and neck and dermatology assessment
License: Permission granted by D.O.R.C to use images for research purposes on 02/08/2022
Histopathological examination of the TSEB revealed several 1 mm fragments with intact tissue architecture. This consisted of fibroconnective tissue with scattered melanin, consistent with choroidal origin. An infiltrate of atypical cells with hyperchromatic nuclei was also identified (Fig. 2E)
The atypical cells were immuniohistochemically positive for HMB45 and Melan-A and negative for cytokeratins
Subsequent genetic analysis of the tissue revealed loss of chromosome 3 and gain of chromosome 8: supporting a diagnosis of primary uveal melanoma with increased metastatic potential
The patient subsequently underwent treatment of the choroidal melanoma with Ruthenium 106 brachytherapy at a dose of 100 Gray to the apex and continues under surveillance for metastasis as per local protocol
Data were extracted for 17 intraocular TSEB cases, of which 11 were of the posterior uvea and, therefore, eligible for inclusion. The details are summarised in Table 1
ten biopsies yielded informative samples (91%)
with eight (73%) providing a tissue diagnosis and were therefore ‘diagnostically successful’
Two (18%) biopsies were histologically inconclusive despite yielding copious tissue; one was treated as choroidal melanoma based on clinical features
and the other underwent a subsequent trans-scleral incisional biopsy which confirmed choroidal melanoma
One (9%) TSEB failed to yield any uveal tissue
The sample was inadvertently mishandled peri-operatively after the biopsy site had been sealed
while being transferred to the specimen pot
It is likely that the sample was lost in this process as no other TSEB failed to yield tissue
This patient was treated as a presumed metastasis from a known disseminated primary adenocarcinoma
This study details the trans-scleral Essen Forceps biopsy (TSEB) technique in posterior uveal lesions
the biopsy sample achieved was superior to that obtained trans-retinally using the 25 G vitrectomy cutter
completely changing the diagnosis and management of the patient
A second biopsy could have been attempted by FNAB or incisional partial lamellar sclerouvectomy (PLSU); however
the lesion’s posterior location and shallowness rendered access challenging and higher risk for retinal puncture
As the surgeon visualises the uveal tissue during the procedure
there is less risk of non-diagnostic biopsies as the surgeon can complete further passes until tissue is retrieved
Handling of the tissues is easier with Essen forceps than with the use of standard forceps
and its blunt tip is less likely to perforate the overlying retina
histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses were non-diagnostic
most likely due to the limited amount of tissue sampled
The authors do not believe that TSEB is more vulnerable to this limitation than other biopsy techniques
but further study with larger cohorts is warranted
the location of the tumour would have made surgical incisional biopsy difficult and would have risked non-diagnostic biopsy or retinal penetration due to the shallow tumour
this was not available at our services during the study period
the technique yields much more tissue with more intact architecture
This allows easier histopathological interpretation of the pathology and permits numerous ancillary diagnostic tests such as immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology for diagnosis conformation and prognostication
This study is limited by its retrospective nature and small sample size
the available instrumentation and cost have not been examined
Further study with a larger cohort is warranted to continue to refine the indications and technique of TESB
Diagnosing posterior uveal tumours can be challenging in atypical cases
Essen forceps biopsy using a trans-scleral approach can enhance tissue sample quality and size in selected lesions
therefore increasing diagnostic accuracy with minimal risk
We recommend considering trans-scleral Essen forceps biopsy within the armamentarium of the ocular oncologist
Identifying uveal melanoma may require intra-ocular biopsy in atypical cases
Established techniques include fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and trans-vitreal biopsy using vitreous cutters and Essen Forceps
The trans-scleral Essen Forceps biopsy (TSEB) technique can improve diagnostic yield in atypical cases of uveal melanoma without compromising safety

reflecting on the 2024 Essen Motor Show (EMS)
despite spending three full days at Messe Essen
it still feels like I missed many of the cars on display
The end of EMS marks the approach of my sixth year as a Speedhunter – the dream job I fell into accidentally
There’s no need for champagne yet; I’ll save that for another time
Let’s get back to business: eight halls packed with some of the wildest
oldest and fastest machines Europe has to offer
the Essen Motor Show was founded by 25-year-old car enthusiast Wolfgang Schöller in 1968 as the ‘International Sports and Racing Car Exhibition Essen.’ Much like the SEMA Show
what started as a humble affair grew into the enormous event we know today
the event was rebranded as the ‘Essen Motor Show’ with a shift in focus from motorsport to a broader celebration that included the aftermarket and tuning industries
A quick walk through the halls is all it takes to see that’s still the case today
with modified cars and aftermarket parts everywhere you look
Several Touring and GT4 cars immediately caught my attention
especially the Risse/Send Motorsport Opel Kadett Coupé GT/E
Opel has a rich motorsport heritage across Europe
its Vauxhall namesake isn’t quite as well regarded
Opel’s motorsport history is far more impressive than most people realise
and I’d love to dive into that at some point
John Cleland is a British Touring Car Championship legend
but seeing his name on this South African Astra GSi Super Tourer shows Opel’s racing pedigree far beyond Vauxhall and the BTCC
On my first and only other visit to EMS in 2019
but nothing like the number of EVs present this year
the entrance to the show still features race cars and smaller tuners
but the first car I saw inside Hall 7 was a modified Volvo EX30
not only showcased their four-wheeled offerings but also a stunning two-wheeled BMW Motorrad creation
Eisenmann Exhaust Systems exhibited a G80 M3 on F1-inspired wheels
a very love-or-hate choice judging by the reactions from the crowd
Bilstein had World Rally Championship legend Walter Röhrl on its stand
where he signed autographs and posed for photos beside a BMW M4 and a rally-spec G-body Porsche 911
it was a gorgeous 2.7-litre E21 BMW on the Dbilas Dynamics stand that caught my attention
Dbilas is renowned for crafting some of the finest intake manifolds
and carburettor setups – and when I was planning a big-power BMW M30 engine build
their ITBs were the only option I considered
It’s impossible to talk about EMS without mentioning Jean-Pierre (JP) Kraemer and his team from JP Performance
The German tuning scene is notoriously hard to break into due to the stringent TÜV standards and the high cost of obtaining approval for parts
is that if someone is brazen enough to build the outrageous cars that German authorities hate
they’re likely to gain fame in the industry
boundary-pushing builds have earned him a well-deserved place at the top
Vlad previously went into some detail about JP’s empire
and his success is clear with two back-to-back stands at EMS 2024 featuring three outrageous builds
JP’s newest creations are a V12-swapped Mercedes-Benz SLC and the ‘Volto’ – a Volvo 850 with a space-frame chassis and electric powertrain
they displayed the new GT500 and the massive Shelby Raptor
Though I may be slightly biased in my preference here…
There was something for everyone at EMS 2024 – from live and competitive sim-racing sessions to RC drift displays and real-life driving demos
whether you’re after memorabilia or a fur coat (yes
I had to stop myself from buying a genuine poster of a BMW M3 GTR Strassenversion because prices at shows tend to be outrageously high
Just like I would have never forgiven myself had I forgotten to include the all-E36 BMW stand
The Tuning Experience hall was packed with so many show-and-shine cars that I’m working on a separate feature for them
I also have stories planned on some DTM legends and a quirky European race series that caught my eye
I’ll leave you with my star of the show – or shall I say
The Koenig Specials R107 Mercedes-Benz SL in metallic black/blue with gold detailing and a white leather interior was as resplendent as it was outrageous
Koenig Specials cars always hold a special place in my heart – not just for their outlandish looks but for their simple attitude
and I’ll say it again: simple cars are often the best
The 2024 Essen Motor Show 2024 was fantastic
The show is really great – and that’s not just my nostalgia talking
The 2024 Essen Motor Show on Speedhunters
Could not stop looking at that Koenig Mercedes though
Those old Koenigs are just <3If you haven’t already

(WAFB) - Police have identified the person killed in a crash on I-10 West at Essen Lane Sunday morning
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department
Police said that Templet was driving a Nissan and lost control of her vehicle
causing it to crash into a Mercedes and roll onto its side
The driver of the Mercedes was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries

Last-minute prep and car culture go hand-in-hand
You’d think you’d outgrow the rush as the stakes get higher
but setup night at the Essen Motor Show (EMS) proves that’s far from the case
but I prefer the chaos that comes before the doors officially open
high-profile events like EMS often have a preview day for media and press before the public gets access to the halls
Having early access is one of the perks of this job – not having to fight for a shot or dodge oblivious attendees standing right in your line of sight makes shooting event coverage much easier
weaving through a ballet of cars being hurried into place
avoiding forklift operators on frantic missions
and trying not to trip over stacks of pallets and boxes is somehow even better
but I wasn’t counting on a bird of prey to swoop past me and land majestically on a ledge
a working falcon tasked with keeping Messe Essen’s halls free of pigeons while the shutters are open for the evening
With the preview day today (Friday) plus two public days ahead for me (the show runs for a whole week
December on Speedhunters will kick off with some of the best modern and classic tuning Europe has to offer
I’ve also spent the past few days bouncing between Stuttgart and Munich, spending time around three of Germany’s legendary marques and getting up close with everyone’s childhood hero – the Need for Speed Most Wanted BMW M3 GTR – at BMW Welt
I hope you’ve enjoyed this quick look at the manic energy and meticulous planning that goes into an event as massive as the Essen Motor Show
but I’m saving the best for my main coverage

greatly expanded second shop is finally opening in KensingtonEssen Bakery's Kensington location — with more than 40 seats and a full coffee program from Elixr — is opening on Nov
To be a successful baker requires patience
Just look at Essen Bakery’s second location
opening Friday at Berks and Hope Streets in the Norris Square section of Kensington
near the Berks station of SEPTA’s Market-Frankford line and steps from Gryphon Cafe and Suraya
The Jewish bakery/cafe from four-time James Beard Award nominee/babka whisperer Tova du Plessis has been in the works for nearly two years

The Zagreb and Essen regimens are comparable in terms of immunogenicity; however
how these regimens impact the immunogenicity of booster vaccination remains unknown
We conducted a clinical trial to assess the immunogenicity of booster vaccination with a purified Vero cell rabies vaccine after primary vaccination with the Zagreb or Essen regimens
conducted in Shangyu City and Shengzhou City
was divided into the primary and booster vaccination phases
all eligible participants were allocated to groups A
and C received the Zagreb regimen as the primary vaccine
The booster vaccination was conducted 6 months after the primary vaccination
Groups B and E received one dose of the booster
Blood samples were collected before the booster
and at approximately 6 months after the booster
Safety was assessed from the first booster dose to 6 months after the final dose
A total of 718 participants completed the booster vaccination
The antibody positive rate (APR) of groups B
The antibody titer rose significantly even after one booster
and was much higher in groups B (48.80 IU/ml) and C (64.38 IU/ml) (receiving Zagreb) than in groups E (34.25 IU/ml) and F (42.89 IU/ml) (receiving Essen)
Although the incidence of ARs was higher in groups B (11.22%) and C (15.79%) than in groups E (3.68%) and F (10.87%)
No serious adverse events (SAEs) associated with vaccination were reported
The immunogenicity of booster vaccination after the Zagreb regimen was significantly higher than that after the Essen regimen
One booster may be sufficient to raise the antibody titer above the 0.5 IU/mL target
Clinical trial registration: This trial is registered at http://www.chinadrugtrials.org.cn/index.html under the registration number CTR20210426 at 08/03/2021
Despite the widespread application of the Zagreb regimen
the immunogenicity and safety of the vaccine booster administered after vaccination with this regimen has not been thoroughly assessed
we conducted a randomized clinical trial to compare the immunogenicity and safety of the purified Vero cell rabies (Speeda) vaccine when used as a booster at 6 months after the primary vaccination with the Zagreb and Essen regimens
The booster vaccination study participant workflow
The booster safety set (bSS) included the participants receiving at least one booster
The booster per protocol set (bPPS) included the participants who completed the booster vaccination
provided blood samples before and at 14 days after receiving the booster
The immune persistence set (IPS) included the participants who completed the booster vaccination and provided blood samples at 12 months after the primary vaccination
Blood samples were collected at 12 months after the primary vaccination from the first 100 participants in each group
At day 0 (before the booster), the APR was 100% for each group, and the GMCs were 6.61, 6.74, 7.29, and 7.02 IU/mL for groups B, C, E, and F, respectively (Table 2)
The APR (P = 1.0000) and GMC (P = 0.5124) were not significantly different among the four groups
The GMC of booster vaccination. Geometric mean concentration (GMC) was derived by transforming the antibody titer by log10. At day 0, the statistical comparison was between all four groups; at 14 days after booster and month 6, the statistical comparison was between the groups with the same primary vaccination regimen or the same booster dose. *P > 0.05, **P < 0.05, ***P < 0.001.
The geometric mean 4-fold increase rate (GMFIR) was defined as the proportion of participants who were antibody-positive before the booster and had a 4-fold antibody titer rise after the booster
The statistical comparison was between the groups with the same primary vaccination regimen or the same booster dose
but the antibody titer decreased over time
We found a significant difference in GMC between groups B and C (P = 0.0088) or between groups C and F (P = 0.0235); this difference was not significant between groups B and E (P = 0.2464) or between groups E and F (P = 0.0719)
The adverse reactions (ARs) were defined as the adverse events (AEs) associated with vaccination
based on the judgement of the study investigators
Most of these ARs occurred within 3 days after vaccination
The most common injection-site AE was pain
which were either associated with vaccination or caused patients to exit the trial
The Zagreb regimen offers higher compliance rates and better cost-effectiveness than the Essen regimen
These features of the Zagreb regimen have popularized its adoption across the globe over the past 20 years; however
the regiment was not approved in China until 2010
is the only purified Vero cell rabies vaccine approved for use alongside the Zagreb regimen
it is important to assess the immunogenicity and safety of administering the booster after vaccination with the Zagreb regimen
we showed that the booster vaccination after Zagreb regimen was both effective and safe
we observed a significant rise in GMC values after the booster vaccination
the optimal vaccine potency and dosage are still under debate
administering one booster elicited a lower antibody titer than administering two boosters
even the one-booster regimen elicited significantly higher GMCs than 0.5 IU/mL
with a GMFIR that was not significantly different between groups (i.e.
These findings indicate that one booster may be sufficient to protect the exposed individual from rabies
Given that rabies is an infectious disease associated with socioeconomic deprivation
the most cost-effective vaccination regimen is conducive to rabies control
not only raised the GMC rapidly above 0.5 IU/mL
but is also the more affordable option for vaccinees
whether extending the interval between vaccination with the Zagreb regimen and boosting with the Speeda will increase immunogenicity awaits to be seen
our study demonstrated that the immunogenicity of the booster was greater when administered 6 months after the Zagreb regimen than when given 6 months after the Essen regimen
one booster may be sufficient to induce adequate antibody levels to protect the exposed individual from rabies
conducted in Shangyu City and Shengzhou City (Zhejiang Province
China) between July 2021 and December 2022
All volunteers were screened before receiving the primary vaccination
Eligible participants were healthy volunteers aged 10–60 years
without a history of being bitten or scratched by a mammal capable of carrying rabies 6 months before vaccination
without a history of rabies vaccination or rabies immunoglobulin administration
and without a history of an acute allergic reaction
The details of inclusion and exclusion criteria for primary vaccination are provided in the Supplementary material (Supplementary page 1)
Written informed consent was provided by the participants (if aged 18–60 years) or the participants (if aged 10–17 years) and their guardians prior to study screening
the participants who completed the primary vaccination and provided blood samples at 6 months after the primary vaccination in groups B
and F were eligible for the booster vaccination
The booster vaccination phase study design
Group B received the Zagreb regimen as the primary vaccination
followed by one dose of the booster vaccination
Group C received the Zagreb regimen as the primary vaccination
followed by two doses of the booster vaccination
Group E received the Essen regimen as the primary vaccination
Group F received the Essen regimen as the primary vaccination
The day on which blood samples were collected from individuals due to receive the first booster was defined as Day 0 in the booster vaccination phase
Blood samples were collected at 12 months after the primary vaccination
which was approximately 6 months after the booster was given; this timepoint was defined as Month 6 in the booster vaccination phase
This clinical trial was approved by Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention (approval number: 2021-001-01), and adhered to the Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Declaration of Helsinki, and Chinese regulatory requirements. The protocol was registered at www.chinadrugtrials.org.cn/index.html under the registration number CTR20210426 at 08/03/2021
The vaccine was reconstituted in 0.5 mL of sterile water and then injected intramuscularly into the deltoid muscle of upper arm
the participants were vaccinated according to their assigned group (i.e.
During the booster vaccination phase (~ 6 months after the primary vaccination)
groups B and E received one dose of the booster on day 0
while and groups C and F received two doses of the booster on days 0 and 3
Groups A and D did not receive the booster
The presence of a rabies neutralizing antibody response was determined using the rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test (RFFIT)
performed by the National Institute for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC; Beijing
China); data were reported as geometric mean concentration (GMC) values
A GMC of ≥ 0.5 IU/mL was defined as a positive result in this study
Immunogenicity was assessed in terms of GMC values
the geometric mean 4-fold increase rate (GMFIR)
The immune persistence was assessed by the GMC and APR at 6 months after booster
and recorded in the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (version 26.1)
The safety was assessed by the incidence of AEs occurring from the first booster dose to 30 days after final dose and the SAEs occurring from the first booster dose to 6 months after final dose
The sample size in the primary vaccination was 200 participants per group for groups A
and F; the same sample size was used in the booster vaccination phase for groups B
Details of the sample size calculation are provided in the Supplementary material (Supplementary page 3)
the sample size for evaluating immune persistence in the booster vaccination groups at month 6 was 100 participants per group (half of the sample size of each group)
The safety analysis was performed on the booster safety set (bSS)
which included participants who received at least one booster
The number and proportion of participants who had adverse reactions (ARs)
defined as AEs associated with the vaccination (evaluated by professional investigators) after vaccination were reported
The immunogenicity analysis was performed on the booster per protocol set (bPPS)
which included participants who completed the booster vaccination
gave blood samples before and 14 days after the booster
The GMC was derived by transforming the antibody titer by log10
The APR was defined as the proportion of the participants who had an antibody titer ≥ 0.5 IU/mL after vaccination
The GMFIR was defined as the proportion of participants who were antibody-positive before the booster and had a 4-fold antibody titer rise after the booster
The immune persistence analysis was performed on the immune persistence set (IPS)
The Student’s t-distribution was used to calculate the 95% confidence interval (CI) from the GMC
The Clopper-Pearson method was used to calculate the 95% CI of the APR and GMFIR
The Student’s t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze continuous data
while the Pearson χ2 test and the Fisher’s exact test were used to analyze categorical data
The non-inferiority study design was only used in the primary vaccination phase
the two-sided alpha value was set to 0.05 in all statistical comparisons
USA) was used to perform all statistical analyses

The devastating COVID-19 pandemic exposed some of society’s most precarious fault lines
People who once felt secure – those with stable jobs
and reliable safety nets – suddenly faced the harsh reality of vulnerability
Once perceived as a distant issue, food insecurity became a lived experience for millions as economic instability, layoffs, and shortages spiraled out of control. Even in the most affluent countries, the cracks became visible. In March 2020, a former refugee, Amine Diare-Conde
watched as social service agencies and food banks in his adoptive country of Switzerland were shuttered
risking enormous food waste and adding to the 745,000 people already living below the poverty line in one of the world’s most prosperous nations
an unprecedented lockdown created drastic shifts in consumer demand
and surplus food and other necessities accumulated in warehouses while families went hungry
amplifying another existing crisis: food waste
Millions of tons of food are lost annually in Switzerland alone
and food waste worldwide accounts for a quarter of the environmental impact of the entire food system.
As the pandemic wore on, Diare-Conde saw an opportunity to tackle two urgent challenges simultaneously – feeding people in need and reducing food waste. He founded Essen für Alle (EfA)
an entirely volunteer-run non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to eradicating hunger in Switzerland by redistributing surplus food to anyone who needs it
Diare-Conde found an unlikely IT lead in then-thirteen-year-old Matthias Beeler
who coded the software that got EfA up and running
collecting and distributing food at its first location in Zurich
homegrown solution was struggling to keep up with increasingly complex logistics – coordinating the shifts of hundreds of volunteer workers
tracking the intake and distribution of thousands of pounds of food and other supplies
since EfA’s IT lead was often otherwise occupied with school and homework
mobile-optimized solution has streamlined food distribution and volunteer management – enabling the distribution of around 900 tons of food and the management of 10,000 volunteer shifts – while offering 360-degree visibility for planning and oversight and providing advanced analytics to enable further process innovation and optimization
Of particular importance to EfA’s clients were the new solution’s stringent protocols for safeguarding sensitive personal data
“Many clients come to us asking if we can guarantee that [their] details will be kept securely
and I can say we work with SAP so we have everything we need to guarantee secure data handling,” Diare-Conde said
By leveraging the SAP BTP AI-enabled business optical character recognition (OCR) capability
new clients experience a seamless registration process with a passport scanner that securely captures their personal information
while returning clients benefit from a smooth and efficient check-in experience
The scalable, cloud-based SAP BTP solution that runs on a database as a service means that EfA’s technology solutions can quickly and efficiently evolve with the organization. “We are constantly working on enhancements and improvements to the existing solution,” Nadjmabadi said. SAP BTP was instrumental in integrating and connecting the entire EfA landscape
volunteers from a database that has grown to 1,000 members distribute 20 tons of food to 2,000 people at up to five locations across Switzerland
EfA’s impact is even more significant than these numbers suggest because some recipients are collecting food for an entire family
meaning that the organization’s dedicated volunteers serve as many as 10,000 people each week
demand for EfA’s services will only be increasing
30,223 refugees applied for asylum in Switzerland
Diare-Conde plans to keep pace: “We will cover almost all of Switzerland soon.” And the NGO isn’t stopping there – the organization is currently exploring a partnership with a prominent German food bank
But given that food waste is estimated to account for 8% to 10% of global greenhouse gases
EfA’s impact is already reverberating beyond Switzerland’s borders by directing thousands of tons of food that might otherwise be wasted onto the plates of people in need and by blazing a bold trail that others may follow

A man has been arrested after allegedly setting off two fires in the western German city of Essen that left 30 people injured and driving a van into two shops
Emergency services were alerted to two fires in residential buildings in quick succession shortly after 5 p.m
The injured people included eight children who were seriously hurt
and two of them were in a life-threatening condition after inhaling smoke
when it arrived at the scene of the first blaze
smoke was billowing from the entrance of the building and people were calling for help from windows
Neighbours had put up ladders to help people escape
but they weren't long enough to reach the upper floors
causing damage to property but no injuries
The suspect then allegedly threatened people with weapons
but several men managed to push him back with shovels and poles and hold him until police arrived
Police said the suspect was a 41-year-old Essen resident with Syrian citizenship
They said they were investigating a possible motive
the man's lawyer Volker Schröder said he had no political motive and that it was a "purely tragic family story
A fight against his wife for the children - and probably a mental disorder."

— The historic Essen Haus restaurant and bar and its neighbor the Come Back In will shut down
Both are making way for a new housing and hotel development at Wilson and Blair Streets in downtown Madison
and you can’t help but feel transported to Germany
That’s exactly what owner Bob Worm intended when he opened the business in 1983
“I wanted my customers and myself to have a good time,” Worm said
“I wanted a drinking hall like they had in Germany
Where there’s a gemütlichkeit type atmosphere
where people would come and enjoy themselves.”
Gemütlichkeit is a German word to describe the state of feeling warmth
That’s what Worm said he was able to foster with Essen Haus
as well as the other businesses he bought on the block: the Come Back In and Hotel Ruby Marie
“The customers are my favorite part,” Worm said
It’s like going to a wedding you weren’t invited to.”
from Essen Haus all the way to Come Back In
This comes after multiple efforts to redevelop the area over the years have fallen through
Pirius is the general manager of Essen Haus and Come Back In.
and we work as a team together and the customers are laughing and dancing
we all talk about the shift together and how it was so much fun and the challenges and positives that we went through,” she said
City leaders approved a developer’s proposal for a hotel
He said it’s hard to say goodbye to the place he’s come to nearly every day for the past 40 years
he said he’s grateful for the time he’s been able to spend there
and getting into the restaurant business wasn’t any easier
Essen Haus and Come Back In will remain open through the summer
with a tentative closing date set for early fall
Jens Adams rounds out podium ahead of Lander Loockx
Laurens Sweeck (Crelan-Corendon) beat Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin-Deceuninck) at the Exact Cross Essen
beating his countryman to the line after a tense closing duel
The pair led the race on the final lap after breaking away from an elite lead group
with Vandeputte leading the way into the last section of the circuit
Around the final bend onto the finishing straight
Vandeputte slipped momentarily and didn't clip into his pedal quickly enough
That gave the opportunity to 30-year-old Sweeck
who could come off the wheel on the final straight to speed around and sprint to the win
his first cyclocross triumph since the end of the 2022-23 season
Jens Adams (Lotto-X Oats-Athletes for Hope) grabbed third place to round out the podium
Lander Loockx (TDT-Unibet) in the final dash to the line
"I couldn’t really start better than this
I think I was a little bit lucky that Niels faltered in that last corner because in principle you can't catch up with Niels there as he's also fast
The wind played a role in the longer stretches at the beginning of the circuit
There was always a bit of a jostling towards the forest
I was able to keep myself in a good position throughout the race
"This is a very important victory for me because it has been a long time since I won."
The major separation in the race came in the third lap of 11 as Toon Aerts (Deschacht-Hens-FSP) pushed a high pace at the front
His acceleration split the front group to leave seven men in the lead
Loockx and Aerts as well as Corne van Kessel (Deschacht-Hens-FSP) and Toon Vandebosch (Crelan-Corendon)
leaving a large lead group at the head of the race at the midway point
though Aerts lost 20 seconds and was forced to chase after suffering a problem with his chain
The final laps saw both Aerts and Ward Huybs (Baloise Trek Lions) making their way to the front
the pair getting there to make it eight up front on lap eight
That situation stuck into the final lap of the race
it was Loockx and Huybs who kicked things off with high-pace efforts as Sweeck also attempted to push on
Sweeck ended up provoking the winning split as he
broke away at the front to fight a two-man contest for the race win
who finished third at the Exact Cross in Beringen last week
was forced to settle for another podium spot

a firm that works on newspaper mergers and acquisitions
Owen Van Essen is wrapping up a long career in the newspaper industry
primarily for merger and acquisition firm Dirks
Owen Van Essen remembers the early days when he first got into newspapers
working at a small daily in Minnesota on the business side
That work eventually transformed into an ownership stake of the small daily
which he held onto for nine years in the late 1970s and early- to mid-1980s
“One of the two brothers who owned the newspaper convinced me to stay a year while he took a one-year sabbatical,” Van Essen said
“It gave me an opportunity to really get immersed in the business as somebody quite young.”
as the kickstarter to what has turned into a decadeslong career in the newspaper industry
The family and Van Essen just a few years later sold their ownership stakes
and Van Essen found new life in the side of the business that worked on the industry’s many mergers and acquisitions
Representing the sale of Van Essen’s stake in the newspaper was Lee Dirks
a well-known newspaper merger and acquisition firm based in Santa Fe
joined Dirks the same year he sold off his stake in 1986
and in the years since has helped the firm represent about half the country’s daily newspaper transactions
Van Essen sat down with The New Mexican to discuss his career
the future of newspapers and what his plans are with more free time on his hands
This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity
Question: You mentioned you worked on the business side of newspapers
Was journalism a thing for you as a kid growing up
Answer: I loved the media business as a youngster
I rapidly gained an appreciation for what the newsroom does once I started at this newspaper
kind of regarded as maybe the best small daily newspaper in the state of Minnesota
and with some really talented journalists working there
It was a place where the family that owned the newspaper recognized that if they got really high-caliber talent
they would lose it eventually to a bigger paper
[it] developed this reputation within the journalism schools as a very good starting job
and the newspaper was able to secure the services of some really talented people for three to five years and then they would move on to bigger and better things
Question: So you had an ownership stake in the Worthington Daily Globe for a number of years
Then you join Lee Dirks at his firm that works on newspaper mergers and acquisitions
Answer: I like to remind my former colleague Lee Dirks that I hired him before he hired me
I was fortunate enough to get involved in the ownership of a daily newspaper in Minnesota
I really wasn’t sure what I was going to do after we sold the newspaper
but I loved the industry and wanted to travel
You can continue to work in this space.’ I’d never really envisioned this to be a lifetime career
most of the time on the sell side of a transaction
So we’re engaged to sell a newspaper when a company wants to sell it
we worked predominantly for independent owners who are getting out of the business
We now work just as often for large groups of newspapers that want to sell off some of their papers for one reason or another
The first thing we do is we analyze the operation and identify the strengths and weaknesses — the selling points
of the firm is that everybody who’s worked there — all the principals who work there — has worked in the business
than the Wall Street folks who would be our competitors
but they just don’t understand the business
The other thing they don’t understand is how the business is tied to the community in which it’s published
And so I think we do a very good job of developing that story
representing somebody who is buying a paper
we’re able to assist them in analyzing the strengths and the weaknesses and community acceptance of a particular newspaper
Question: What was that transition like for you as someone who owned a paper and then became a partner in a firm that represented newspaper mergers and acquisitions
I had a very good partner who could teach me the part of the business that I wasn’t familiar with
and could talk that business with our clients and with prospective buyers
I think one of the strengths of our firm is that we had so many long-term people
Lee Dirks was in the business for 25 years
who just retired and was with the firm for 25 years
has already been with it for about 20 years
we developed these relationships with the industry folks
We know who the owners of these newspapers are; we know their strategies
so that they share with us kind of their strategies
Question: Is there any deal that you’ve worked on that stands out to you
Answer: It happens to be the largest deal we did
There was a company back in the ‘90s and they exited the business in 2000 — a company called Thomson Newspapers
They were a Canadian-based company but the largest publisher of daily newspapers in the United States
And for strategic reasons decided to get out of this business
which did manuals for attorneys and so forth
They had a lot of newspapers to sell and the total aggregate value of that transaction was $2.2 billion
Part of the strategy was carving up that package of newspapers that was spread all across the country into packages that made sense for prospective buyers
and then making sure at the end of the process you didn’t have any orphans
But that’s the one I think that stands out for different reasons
but clearly one of those reasons is it’s the largest transaction
But your firm recently was involved in the sale of Gannett newspapers in New Mexico (The Farmington Daily Times
Did you have any involvement yourself in those transactions
Answer: I’ve worked very closely with Gannett for decades
What they’re doing is their current business strategy is geared to their big papers in Phoenix and Milwaukee
They’re smart enough to recognize that there’s no way they should run these smaller papers like they run those papers
And so their goal is not to do that and to put them into the hands of people who are local for the most part
and who operate newspapers in quite different fashion than from how they operate those big newspapers
I think we’ve maybe done 20 transactions or so involved in Gannett as a seller
we sold off seven or eight of their papers in Missouri
similar to what’s happened in New Mexico just recently
Question: Is that a normal occurrence — working with a company like Gannett and then selling typically to local folks
like in this case El Rito Media and Ballantine Communications
because you can take advantage of economies of scale if you publish a number of newspapers in a region
It makes good sense that the business is going in that direction
That’s been going on for quite some time actually — some people call it clustering
Owning a group of papers in the same region affords you a lot of expense synergies
Question: I’d say that you’re heavily involved in the newspaper business even if it’s from the perspective of helping folks sell their newspapers
As someone who’s been in this business for decades
what do you think the future holds for newspapers
the smallest of the papers — the small weekly newspapers in towns of 1,000 people or less — might be endangered species
It’s going to be difficult for them to continue to publish
They’ll all have to go to a digital delivery [to survive]
The need for local news is always going to be there
I think having professional journalists produce that news is always gonna be around
newspapers in towns the size of Santa Fe are the sweet spots
[Newspapers] might publish on fewer days of the week
What does that look like and when did it start
Answer: Sara April has been a wonderful partner
and we’ve gradually transitioned more and more of the workload to her
And so really [retirement] started this spring in earnest where I’ve decided not to sort of quarterback any particular transaction
I’m still deeply involved with long-term clients
and so I do some [mergers and acquisitions] work every week
and I sort of think that it’s going to continue at least for this year or next
I have this incredible conviction about the importance of newspapers in communities
As I probably have a little more time to do other things
some of those things might be involved with efforts to work with [local publishers] in developing legislation that would be helpful to the industry
Answer: I’d like to become a much better golfer than I am
There’s a bunch of things that I’ve not really had the time for in the past
My wife and I have started to spend some time in Arizona during the cold months here
… I’m sure I will be able to find things to do

It feels strange kicking off my 2024 Essen Motor Show coverage with a spotlight
you need to take a break from the madness of a huge event like this one
I’ve retreated to the media suite upstairs to recharge
And what better way to do that than by telling you about my two all-time favourite cars ever built in America
For those still getting a sense of my automotive tastes, let me lay it out: my dream three-car garage consists of my very own BMW 740i Sport
My BMW is a non-negotiable in the garage, while the 964 only just wins out against the 993 Cup 3.8 RSR. The Shelby
That could easily be replaced by a split-window 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
imagine my shock when I turned a corner at EMS and found a matching GT500 and Stingray parked side by side on the V8 Werk stand in Hall 7 at Messe Essen
wondering if I’d fallen into a fever dream
these cars are as rare as they come in the world of ’60s American sports and muscle cars
with a desirability factor that’s through the roof
The split-window C2 Corvette was only available in 1963
thanks to Bill Mitchell’s design direction
it’s one of the most iconic shapes in automotive history
taking inspiration from the outlandish spine of the Bugatti Type 57 and refining it into the sleek
it was a world apart from the more traditional 1962 Corvette roadster it replaced
the C2 felt like it had been designed in another century
The dashboard featured two large arches housing the instruments for the driver
along with a lockable glovebox for the passenger
The Corvette was no longer a silly little summer weekend toy; it had evolved into a car you could comfortably use every day
it wasn’t just about looks and comfort – it was still a serious performance car for the time
producing between 350 and 360hp depending on your budget and how badly you needed to win those traffic light drag races against your neighbours
and lighter body meant the Stingray weighed less than the roadster that came before it
and handle far better than its predecessor
I can’t help but be drawn to the bruteness of the Shelby GT500
After nearly two years of the GT350 – Carroll Shelby’s race-focused
lightweight masterpiece – he and the team at Shelby American decided to take bigger steps to differentiate their cars from Ford’s typical Mustang
One of the most noticeable changes was the car’s bodywork
more aggressive fibreglass nose cone and a Kamm tail rear fascia with an integrated spoiler
The front grille housed a pair of central spot lamps
and the iconic three-bar taillights were swapped for much wider items borrowed from the Mercury Cougar
replaced by functional ducted scoops and lower brake cooling scoops
The fibreglass hood was now fitted with a scoop to improve engine cooling and airflow because with the 428ci (7.0L) ‘Police Interceptor’ V8 crammed under that bonnet
churned out around 360hp and 420ft/lbs of torque
While the GT500 might sound like the more brutish of the two
the truth is it was much tamer than the GT350
was sometimes considered too rough and aggressive for regular driving
ironed out some of those rough edges by dropping the more highly-strung V8 and limited-slip differential in the back
As much as the boy racer in me yearns for a ’67 GT350 – ready to take more abuse
but with the gorgeous Shelby-designed nose and tail – the reality is that with GT350s and GT500s selling for well over US$200,000 these days
I’d probably be terrified to truly explore their full potential
So maybe the GT500 would make more sense – a perfect balance of power
I had the privilege of experiencing not one but both of these dream machines at the same time
who poured thousands of hours into restoring each car for the same owner
How could I possibly resist an invitation to visit their workshop and showroom
I might be too busy pinching myself to take any photos
Now that's what you call an American classic nothing like the Mustang and Corvette
Sara Casasola and Laura Verdonschot round out podium
Marion Norbert Riberolle (Crelan-Corendon) scored her first win of the 2024-25 cyclocross season at the Exact Cross in Essen
soloing home just as she did in last year's edition of the race
The Belgian got away from a select lead group on the sixth of seven laps in the race
having earlier tried to make a winning move on the fourth lap
She left behind Italian teammate Sara Casasola
with Casasola coming through to take second at the line
Laura Verdonschot (De Ceuster-Bouwpunt) rounded out the podium at 11 seconds down
The Belgian had been the only rider to stick with Norbert Riberolle two laps earlier
while Casasola and another De Ceuster-Bouwpunt rider
"My mother usually comes to races but not this time
They watched my win on TV so I'm very happy
"Last year I only took my first win in December and now it's at the beginning of the season
She's a good teammate so yes it was super nice."
Lap five saw several Dutch riders make it across the gap to fill out the lead group
Aniek van Alphen (Cyclocross Reds) and Manon Bakker (Crelan-Corendon) were among the riders who linked up with the lead trio
rather than making any attacking moves for themselves
it was up to Norbert Riberolle to make the decisive jump
Casasola and Franck led the chase behind as the Italian looked to take the initiative
bringing the pair close to the sole leader
Norbert Riberolle had too much in the tank for her chasing rivals
she enjoyed a 21-second lead over the rest
enough for her to survive comfortably and score the victory
coming out from behind Franck to push on alone and take second place
BATON ROUGE — One is dead and one is injured after a car crash on I-10 West at Essen Lane
Officials say Templet was driving a Nissan and lost control of her vehicle
her vehicle rolled onto its side where she was partially ejected.
Detectives say Templet was not wearing her seatbelt.
The driver of the Mercedes was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries
but officials say the other two passengers were uninjured.
