Bayern Munich are starting to become more adventurous with their transfer business. Early in 2024, Bayern signed Sacha Boey. Then, in the summer of that year, the Bavarians tried to sign Estêvão Willian from Palmeiras in the Brazilian league before Chelsea FC completed the signing
Bayern may be looking to KRC Genk in the Jupiler Pro League in Belgium to reinforce their striker position
Bayern have already shown interest in some young Genk players, but the potential reinforcement in question now would be a back up striker, as reported by Dominik Schneider (and captured by @iMiaSanMia):
Bayern are monitoring Genk’s Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare (24) as a potential backup for Harry Kane
Dortmund and Stuttgart also made enquiries
A potential move to Bayern would not be Arokodare’s first stint in Germany
given he went on loan to FC Köln for the 2020/21 season
Arokodare spent most of his career in France or Latvia before moving to Genk and then blossoming
Would this be exactly the kind of creative transfer Bayern need to make
in line with the club’s cost cutting measures
Or would it be a far-fetched move that simply has no chance of working out
Probably somewhere in the middle of those two extremes

The search for the world’s top talents never ends
may have revealed two new results of this strategy:
Bayern are showing interest in two Genk talents: Konstantinos Karetsas (17/attacking midfielder) and Lucca Brughmans (16/goalkeeper)
[Bayern head coach] Vincent Kompany has personally contacted the entourage of Brughmans
considered one of the most talented goalkeepers in the country
Bayern have so far shown informal interest
Genk are hoping to hold on to both players a bit longer
Despite being just 17, Karetsas has already made his breakthrough in the Jupiler League this season and has tallied over 1,400 minutes in total in all competitions, as well as making his debut and scoring for the Greek senior national team in the very recent March international break. Twitter account @scout53387 made a very good compilation of the youngster’s best moments
but he has made the bench for the senior team multiple times already this season

Chelsea have completed the signing of Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders from Genk
19-year-old Penders will stay with the Belgian club for the remainder of the 2024-25 season and join Chelsea’s first-team squad in the summer of 2025
The youngster has begun the season as Thorsten Fink’s first-choice goalkeeper at Genk
keeping a clean sheet in their opening Belgian Pro League game against Standard Liege before starting in the 3-1 defeat at Leuven
but did not feature in the victories over Club Bruges and Beerschot
Penders spent last season as the No 1 at Genk’s reserve side
which competes in the second tier of Belgian club football
as well as featuring on the bench for the first team on several occasions
He played 25 times for Jong Genk last season

Genk faltering in Belgian Pro League title race after dropping points against Antwerp | OneFootballGet Belgian & Dutch Football News
Despite having lead for the majority of the season
it appears that once again the play-offs will see the side in pole position missing out on the title
they were not at the races against Antwerp on Wednesday evening
The home side appeared to be the ones more desperate for the win and when Michel-Ange Balikwisha headed the side in front
It looked like it was about to get even worse for Thorsten Fink’s men when Mike Penders gave away a penalty
only to then redeem himself by keeping it out
The side did then manage to get an equaliser through top scorer Tolu Arokodare
but a point against Antwerp is not enough for Genk at this stage in the campaign
The sides face each other again at the weekend
at which point Genk will know the outcome of the huge clash between Union and Club Brugge on Thursday evening
Club now have a great chance to extend their lead over Genk to four points
while Union could leapfrog both with a win

Bayern Munich are interested in Konstantinos Karetsas according to Sky Germany’s reporter Florian Plettenberg
The 17-year-old talent from Genk is highly regarded by Die Rekordmeister.
Bayern are believed to be monitoring the situation
but the Greek teenager isn’t top of their priority list
Thanks to Thorsten Fink – the former Bayern player and Genk head coach – connections to Munich are strong.
The ball was thrown onto the field from the Union bench as Genk
were launching their last attack in a bid at a late comeback
forcing a halt to play with a second ball on the pitch
Union's kitman Ibrahim Fadili was identified as the transgressor and sent off but it has since transpired that reserve goalkeeper and former Genk player Vic Chambaere was the guilty party
"Our equipment manager was wrongfully sent off for this incident
it turns out that it was our goalkeeper Vic Chambaere who kicked the ball onto the pitch," said a statement on Tuesday
"This is an action that Union strongly disapproves of and which does not reflect our values or those of our supporters
Union will always fight to the bitter end on the pitch
our management spoke with our technical staff and player Vic Chambaere
We also wish to apologise to the match referee and our opponent on Sunday afternoon for throwing the ball onto the pitch in the final minutes of the match."
The result allowed Club Brugge to move top of the standings with a two-point advantage to set up a close three-way contest for the title with four rounds of matches left.
The 22-year-old Chambaere, who joined from Genk at the start of the season, is expected to be handed a four-match ban while Fadili could get a two-match ban for "misleading the referees by sacrificing himself," Belgian media reported.

Covering 24 hectares, The Biomist in the city of Genk, in the Belgian province of Limburg, is a complex devoted to biocultural diversity that includes the studio of artist Koen Vanmechelen and the Cosmopolitan Cultural Park, where the LlabOvo pavilion is. A work of the Antwerp firm led by Kurt Van Belle and Patricia Medina Prieto, the concrete construction features veterinary facilities, a workshop space, and a café.
The sculptural building is composed of four identical arches chained together – two open and two closed – which hold up a cantilevered roof that serves as a viewing terrace. A central opening in the roof lets in natural light, casting a changing play of light and shadow throughout the day.

The 2023-24 Belgian Pro League is certainly one that Mark McKenzie and Genk will want to forget, but luckily for McKenzie, he has a new opportunity with the U.S. men’s national team to focus on.
McKenzie is with the USMNT ahead of the 2024 Copa America group stage, which begins for the Americans on Sunday night. The former Philadelphia Union homegrown defender is one of five centerbacks in Gregg Berhalter’s squad, aiming to feature in the competition for his first cap of 2024.
After not featuring against Colombia and Brazil earlier this month, McKenzie is eager to fight against tough South American opposition this summer.
“I think we have a group of guys, we’re all hungry,” McKenzie told reporters Tuesday. “We’re all competitive and every time we step into this environment, I think the expectations rise. We demand more of ourselves and it makes us demand more of each other, and at the end of the day, that’ll raise performances and raise the levels here.
“You step into a platform like Copa America and now you have a trophy on the line,” he added. “Everyone realizes what we need to do. It’s about putting together quality performances each step of the way, and from there we just continue to grow as a group.”
At club level, McKenzie was one win away from being a Belgian Champion in 2023 but Genk’s quest of lifting the title fell just short on the final day of the season. Since then, he’s remained a stalwart in the Genk backline, but the club took a step back in terms of fighting for silverware on the domestic level.
The 25-year-old logged 44 combined appearances last season, logging over 4,000 minutes of playing time. However, Genk finished fifth in the Belgian Pro League Championship Round, missing out on European Football for next season.
McKenzie’s first priority this summer remains on helping the USMNT win the Copa America before starting a new chase for league success at Genk.
“I think everybody realized that it wasn’t really about who was playing, it was more so about stepping up and doing your role to the fullest of your ability,” he added. “The results we couldn’t really control, and when you go through difficult stretches as well, it’s tough to find that form again. These are the years where we really learned the most about ourselves as players and people, and from there you can grow.”
And apparently got married during the mini break the NT took after the Brazil match. Really miss the Orange Slices podcast, I enjoyed the inside look at young pros today from Mark and the back in my day from Heath Pierce. Plus Mark would get a lot of the current NTers and Heath would bring in the OGs.
Man, never heard of that podcast. It was Mark and Heath as host?
Yes, go back and listen to some of there interviews. I imagine scheduling got to difficult with Mark in Belgium and Heath working for Its Called Soccer. Not sure what Heath is doing now after they replaced him with Jesse Marsch doing the show with Jimmy and Charlie.

Mark McKenzie's decision is a victory for him
In a market where the most obvious is not always the best
McKenzie proves that true success lies in following one's own path
we can only hope that this new chapter in France brings even more luster to this talented defender's career

I follow the world of sport on a daily basis
few are as intriguing as that of Mark McKenzie
opted to leave Belgian club Genk for Toulouse in France
Amid speculation that German giants were keeping tabs on the defender
McKenzie surprisingly decided to make his own way in Ligue 1
But what really lay behind this choice that many would consider unusual?\n
Follow MLS Multiplex on X (Twitter).
With 128 caps for Genk and international titles for the USMNT, McKenzie was on the radar of Europe's most ambitious clubs. The expectation was that he would move to the Bundesliga, where his ability to read the game, pass accurately and versatility in central defense would be highly valued. But, contrary to expectations, he opted to head south to a lesser-known club, but one with big ambitions: Toulouse.\n
McKenzie's decision goes beyond the statistics. Sure, he's the kind of modern defender who not only defends tightly, but also takes an active part in the offensive build-up, something that any elite club would be looking for. However, when talking about his choice, McKenzie made it clear that his desire was not just to find a competitive club, but a project that matched his personal and professional ambitions.\n
At Toulouse, McKenzie has found an environment that goes beyond the sporting aspect. He describes the club as a “family”, a place where each player has a defined role and where team spirit is what drives everything. That spirit, combined with the desire to face the best in Ligue 1, such as PSG, Monaco and Marseille, is what really sealed the deal for the American defender.\n
For American soccer, McKenzie's move to Toulouse is a milestone. It's a choice that shows our players are thinking beyond traditions and are looking for opportunities where they can really make a difference. It's not just about the name of the club, but about the impact they can have and the evolution they can achieve.\n
In the end, Mark McKenzie's decision is a victory for him, for Toulouse and, indirectly, for the USMNT. In a market where the most obvious is not always the best, McKenzie proves that true success lies in following one's own path, even if it is the least expected. And for American fans, we can only hope that this new chapter in France brings even more luster to this talented defender's career.
USMNT defender Mark McKenzie opts for Ligue 1 when he signs for Toulouse, despite offers from German giants. What prompted the American to make this unusual choice?
