Michael Vanthourenhout rides to solo third place in Belgian podium sweep Van Aert resisted tough challenges throughout the eight-lap race near Kortrijk with Iserbyt and his teammate Michael Vanthourenhout putting him under serious pressure until the latter dropped away and the former made a mistake on the final lap which allowed Van Aert to ride solo to the win It looked as though Iserbyt might be able to better his Belgian compatriot as he took over the lead once the pair took the bell ahead of the rest of the field Van Aert was simply too neat in his performance Iserbyt and Vanthourenhout did come home safely to take second and third The race was Van Aert's first win since the World Cup in Benidorm last January and marks a complete comeback to form after his road season was ended short in September due to a heavy crash at the Vuelta a España but when I rode through for the first time Michael [Vanthourenhout] and Eli [Iserbyt] were still there So I just focused on the final," said Van Aert post-race "I started this winter without expectations but it seems hard for people to believe because they are used to me always competing to win it is really a surprise that I can do this already 2025 has started and it feels really good." Superprestige series leader Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin-Deceuninck) fought back after a slow start to finish fifth and extend his overall lead over second-place Lars van der Haar (Baloise Glowi Lions) after the Dutchman had to relocate his shoulder Vandeputte will head into the final round in Middelkerke with a 10-point lead After Lucinda Brand soloed to victory in the women's race in Gullegem the anticipation stayed high for the start of the men's race as it brought the second appearance of Van Aert in the 2024-25 cyclocross season he got off the line quickly from the second row and jumped quickly into third before eventually setting into the leading group of nine riders with race favourites Laurens Sweeck (Crelan-Corendon) A small slip from Van der Haar allowed Vanthourenhout Sweek and Emiel Verstrynge (Crelan-Corendon) to get a small gap Van Aert quickly sensed the danger and closed the gap to make it four with a slim lead Van Aert moved into the lead for the first time at the start of lap four and started to apply the pressure With a higher pace and more skills on show only Vanthourenhout could stay with the three-time CX world champion Vanthourenhout took over from Van Aert after a small mistake from the Visma man Iserbyt began to close the gap with Joran Wyseure (Crelan-Corendon) close behind to make it a group of four in front Iserbyt took over from his teammate to again attack Van Aert on lap six forcing him to work hard and keep things together until he retook the lead on the penultimate lap Van Aert put in a series of jabs but struggled to drop the Belgian champion ceding the lead once again at the start of the final lap Iserbyt made one small mistake followed by a bigger error when he got stuck on a steep bank allowing Van Aert to ride away for his first victory of the winter Results powered by FirstCycling during which time he also wrote for Eurosport Prior to joining the team he reported on races such as Paris-Roubaix and the Giro d’Italia Donne for Eurosport and has interviewed some of the sport’s top riders in Chloé Dygert he spends the majority of his time watching other sports – rugby Be one of the first to try our new activity feed Van Aert prevails in tight battle with Iserbyt Lucinda Brand gaps Bäckstedt and Alvarado to win It’s a very welcome boost after several difficult months Wout van Aert raced back to the top of the podium Saturday, notching up his first victory across all disciplines since stage 10 of the Vuelta a España, and his first win in a cyclocross race since last year’s World Cup in Benidorm The triumph in the Superprestige Gullegem is an important return to form following his big crash in the Vuelta It also put a broad smile on Van Aert’s face heading towards an all-important road season with several big goals The Visma-Lease a Bike rider was involved in a close duel towards the end with Belgian national champion Eli Iserbyt. The Pauwels Sauzen-Cibel Clementines competitor traded blows with Van Aert but was under pressure on the final lap. This saw him make two errors and be gapped, finishing ten seconds down. His teammate Michael Vanthourenhout was a further 21 seconds back. “I didn’t have big expectations this winter, partly because I am looking forward to a big season on the road,” Van Aert said. “So I am really happy with the victory today.” The Visma-Lease a Bike rider began on the second row but powered his way through the field. He moved clear with Vanthourenhout after the halfway point, but Crelan-Corendon rider Joran Wyseure and Iserbyt got back up to them. Iserbyt proved to be Van Aert’s closest challenger, but a dab of his foot on the final lap was followed by a delay getting back into the pedal and then a loss of momentum on a short ramp. He was forced to dismount and run, losing all chance of success. “Before the race I was really, really tired,” he said. “But then as the race went on I felt physically very good. In the corners I think I felt better than Wout and I found in the second half of the race I could aspire to win myself. “I made one mistake too many in the end. On the last lap I made two mistakes and then I knew it would be very difficult to follow Wout. Particularly on the straight sections he is very, very strong.” Van Aert’s big crash on stage 15 of the Vuelta a España left him with a big knee injury and he made clear before it would take him time to ride into form. Saturday was his second cross race this season and things are looking promising. “I went quite fast in the beginning. Michael Vanthourenhout was the only one who could really come with me,” he said. “Eli Iserbyt was very good today. “I am looking forward to Dendermonde tomorrow, of course, but I just take every day as it is. I didn’t hold back today, that is for sure.” He will line out in the World Cup race on Sunday. Big rival Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) is out with injury, meaning Van Aert has a good chance of success. However nothing is guaranteed and with Iserbyt running him close Saturday, things could prove tight. and the first triumph of 2024 -  after she attacked with two laps to go from a group of three race leaders and Inge Van der Heijden finished third in the West Flanders event while standout favourite and defending champion Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado struggled early on and finally abandoned having mastered the ultra-difficult conditions for a powerful lone win “I have to say that was one of the most fun races I’ve done this year,” she said later every straight there was someone different on the front and then I decided to attack with two laps to go.”   Van der Heijden and Backstedt opened up an early lead on the ultra-muddy old-school course where conditions were rendered even tougher than usual after a week of torrential heavy rain with one segment near a river was actually removed before the elite races.  had a poor start while Van der Heijden’s Crelan-Corendon teammate Manon Bakker joined the duo ahead at the end of the first lap The trio then managed to keep Alvarado - who bounced back to fourth before finally abandoning -  at a distance while consolidating their own podium positions and focussing on the victory already rivals in the early season races in Indianapolis but it was Backstedt who then launched a key well-timed attack on the road section to gain a few metres advantage with two laps to go.  Backstedt took two bike changes in quick succession But her trip through the pits barely cost her as she maintained stunning consistency and a measured pace through the unrelentingly gloopy conditions only for Bakker to drop her teammate and start a lone pursuit of the Briton Backstedt entered the final lap with a 35-second advantage and her gap steadily increased from there on Van der Heijden then briefly came back to Bakker with a trademark late surge but there was little they could do to stop the Briton “I attacked because Manon was looking down at her pedals She’s not watching what’s going on so I just went for it,” Backstedt explained later “I looked back at the end of the straight and then it was just trying not to make mistakes after that Alasdair FotheringhamSocial Links NavigationAlasdair Fotheringham has been reporting on cycling since 1991 He has covered every Tour de France since 1992 bar one as well as numerous other bike races of all shapes and sizes ranging from the Olympic Games in 2008 to the now sadly defunct Subida a Urkiola hill climb in Spain he has also written for The Independent,  The Guardian,  ProCycling European Champion solos home ahead of Cameron Mason and Joran Wyseure the Pauwels-Sauzen Bingoal rider surged away from a chase group of four and then stayed away with no further challenges for his second victory of the season was tenacious lone counterattacker Cameron Mason (Cyclocross Reds) with Joran Wyseure (Crelan-Corendon) outpowering Thibau Nys (Baloise Trek Lions) in a thrilling In the absence of standout names like Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) was the clear dominator on an ultra-demanding old-school course where the omnipresent deep mud and multiple stretches of gloopy standing water quickly shredded the field but I felt really good today,” Vanthourenhout said afterwards “The women’s race before had made the course tougher to ride and there wasn’t one line to follow but a lot of options Nys made a good start in the atrociously muddy conditions but the 68-man field was quickly scattered across the demanding terrain and Wyseure Gianni Vermeesch and Felipe Orts then briefly veered clear.  Coming through the start/finish line and the only stretch of mud-free terrain on the entire course for the first time Vanthourenhout and Nys regained contact with the leaders but it was only deep into the second lap that a group of top favourites edged their way clear in any definitive fashion Wyseure and Vanthourenhout had eked out the briefest of gaps on  Vermeersch and Lander Loockx and then little by little the leading trio’s advantage began to broaden began to test his rivals with longer runs on some of the muddiest sections and as specks of rain briefly began to fall his advantage had begun to stretch to double digits and a clear dominator of the course had finally emerged Vanthourenhout’s solo position on the front enabled him to pick clearer lines a real advantage on such difficult terrain while Mason and Vermeesch surged back into the game to make it a chase group of four but with a 20-second advantage for the Belgian on the Briton  - with whom he already clashed for the win in the Europeans  - holding steady on such a demanding course it was always going to be difficult for Mason to recoup lost ground And so it proved as Vanthourenhout’s narrow but consistent lead never seemed to be under threat enabling the Belgian to soak up the applause from his home crowd all the way through the last lap just as he had in the Europeans behind the same rider in Pontchateau Vanthourenhout’s advantage on the rest of the field was never really in doubt “It was a hard one,” Mason said afterwards “a bit of a time trial and not a good start but it didn’t really matter because it was just a tractor race.” but that was for a reason -  he was definitely the strongest today.” Dutchwoman tops Rochette and Backstedt in the mud Shirin van Anrooij (Baloise Trek Lions) claimed victory at the 2022 Cyclocross Gullegem with a dominant ride in the Belgian rain and mud.  The 19-year-old, who became the U23 women's European champion in November, rode clear on the first of five laps and extended her advantage all the way to the finish.  Magalie Rochette claimed second place, almost a minute in arrears, while 17-year-old Zoe Backstedt (Tormans) put in another impressive display to claim the final podium position. The C2 race in Gullegem did not feature the biggest names of the elite women's field such as world champion Lucinda Brand but it was still a major televised race in Belgium and another significant moment in Van Anrooij's rise. After winning the Jingle Cross in the USA earlier in the season, it is her second elite victory of the season and her third in total after clinching the U23 European title. It was a dominant display in a tricky course that was rendered sloppy and heavy but the pouring rain. Despite the lap times being over 10 minutes, it was decided they would still cover five laps. Van Anrooij had the power from the start, leaving Rochette behind when the Canadian faltered in a sand pit. She set out for the second lap with a lead of almost 20 seconds and increased it to more than a minute by the final lap. By that point, the winner was evident, and the more exciting contest was for second place.  Backstedt managed to claw her way over to Rochette and move past on lap 3, but then crashed on lap 4 and had to settled for third.Behind, Lotto Kopecky had a battle of her own to hold off Inge van der Heijden for fifth, but they were a long way off the convincing winner. "It went really well, right from the start," Van Anrooij said. "Not all the top players were there, but it is always cool to still ride for the win." Van Aert 4th as Vanthourenhout and Van Kessel complete podium Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) claimed an emphatic victory at Cyclocross Gullegem after soloing clear on the fifth lap of the race. The Dutchman came home 17 seconds clear of ahead of Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauce-Bingoal), while Corné van Kesse (Tormans) took third, a further two seconds back. Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) continued his return to action with an encouraging 4th place finish. In only his second competitive outing since crashing heavily at the Tour de France in July, the Belgian began strongly and remained in contention for a podium spot after Van der Poel escaped at the midway point. Van Aert dropped back under the force of a Vanthourenhout acceleration on the penultimate lap, but he still had the wherewithal to place 4th, 42 seconds down on Van der Poel. His next race will be the Belgian Championships next weekend. The day, like so many, belonged to Van der Poel, who was content to allow his rivals force the pace on the opening laps before he took up the reins and moved clear on the fifth circuit. In the opening phase of the race, Van Aert was to the fore, and his repeated forcing helped to shape the race. By the halfway point, only four men – Van Aert, Van der Poel, Vanthourenhout and Van Kessel – were left at the front, and Vanthourenhout felt sufficiently emboldened to try an acceleration of his own. Van der Poel’s response was swift and emphatic. The world champion quickly moved into a lead of almost half a minute and he was able to manage his advantage thereafter to secure a resounding win. Van der Poel’s dominance has led to concerns about the ongoing appeal of the cyclo-cross circuit, but there were large crowds on hand in Gullegem on Saturday afternoon, thanks in no small part to Van Aert’s presence. “The last five or six races prove that cyclo-cross is absolutely not dead,” Van der Poel said, according to Sporza. “It was already busy here last year, and this year it’s been one of the busiest crosses of the season. That is of course also because Wout is back, and he has done well here.” Van Aert struggled with his equipment at one point but, he managed to catch back up to the chasers Vanthourenhout and Van Kessel, though their pursuit was a notional one by that juncture. In truth, they were already racing for second place. Vanthourenhout’s late acceleration shed Van Aert from the group and the Belgian proceeded to beat Van Kessel in the duel for second place. Inge van der Heijden (777) and Sanne Cant (Iko-Crelan) would battle at the line to complete the podium, Van der Heijden taking second in the head-to-head battle. French national champion Marion Norbert Riberolle (Starcasino cx Team) charged to the lead early by making a move in the first part of sand. She was followed by teammate Anna Kay, Vas, Van der Heijden, and Cant, until a mistake allowed all the chasers to pass. Vas used this break in momentum to her advantage taking control at the front on the second lap and then distanced herself more on each ensuing lap.  “I really wanted to win because the first game was of the new year. It was a technical course, but the mud wasn't too difficult today. The mud was difficult in Dendermonde,” said Vas in a Wierlerflits report after her win Saturday. Midway through the muddy course it looked like Cant would be the only rider to have a chance to even catch sight of, but Van der Heijden clawed her way back and marked all of Cant’s moves. By the final lap, Cant set the pace in the final twisting turns of the course with Van der Heijden on her wheel. In the final straightaway the Belgian champion was unable to match Van der Heijden’s acceleration at the line to snatch second place. Both riders finished 30 seconds behind Vas, and Briton Kay taking fourth, more than a minute back of the Hungarian national champion. Riberolle would roll across the line in fifth, another 13 seconds after Kay. Like the men’s race, many of the top women opted not to take part at Cyclocross Gullegem in order to rest for Sunday’s World Cup, including Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin-Fenix), Denise Betsema (Pauwels Saauzen-Bingoal), Lucinda Brand (Telenet Baloise Lions) and Clara Honsinger (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld). As expected, the race provided an early battle between Van der Poel and Briton Tom Pidcock (Trinity Racing), as the wheels of Wout van Aert, Laurens Sweeck, Michael Vanthourenhout and Toon Aerts would take the day off to target Sunday’s World Cup race in Hulst. Early on the first lap, Van der Poel slid in an off-camber turn and had to chase the lead group, which included Diether Sweeck (Credishop-fristads), Jens Adams and Pidcock. Sweeck and Adams controlled the pace for the first two laps, until Van der Poel powered back to the front with Pidcock in tow. Midway into the nine-lap contest, the Van der Poel-Pidcock duo had opened a small gap to all chasers, which saw Gianni Vermeersch (Credishop-fristads) in the mix. With three laps to go, the World Champion began to pull away from Pidcock and make it an uncontested solo win at the line, 45 seconds ahead of the Briton. On the final lap, Adams and Vermeersch would go head to head for the final podium spot, the sprint by the two Belgians taken by four seconds by Adams. It was an unexpected third place for Adams, who returned to racing at Gullegem after being sidelined for more than two weeks with a viral infection.  “It was still quite a technical cross because the grass on the track had come off. I did have a nice afternoon despite the fact that I made some sliders. I didn't immediately find a good grip on the course, but that improved after a few bicycle changes," Mathieu van der Poel said to Belgian's HLN after the win.  In-form Belgian lands fifth victory in eight days Remco Evenepoel celebrates his win at Gullegem Koerse(Image credit: Peter De Voecht/PN/SprintCyclingAgency©2022)Evenepoel heads up the podium alongside Sasha Weemaes and Jarne Van Grieken(Image credit: Peter De Voecht/PN/SprintCyclingAgency©2022)Evenepoel among the lead group before his race-winning attack(Image credit: Peter De Voecht/PN/SprintCyclingAgency©2022)Remco Evenepoel added another win to his packed 2022 palmarès on Tuesday soloing to victory at the Belgian kermesse race Gullegem Koerse Gullegem Koerse might not be an official UCI event, but the 78th edition of the 171km race was hotly contested. Major names taking part included Greg Van Avermaet and Oliver Naesen (AG2R Citroën) along with Sep Vanmarcke (Israel-Premier Tech) and Tom Devriendt (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) taking a solo victory after leaving behind an elite lead group 11km from the line who in April won his first Monument at Liège-Bastogne-Liège had been on the attack from the start of the race before letting a breakaway group take the lead taking Van Avermaet and Arjen Livyns (Bingoal-Pauwels Sauces-WB) with him Evenepoel made his winning move heading towards the end of the penultimate lap of the race None of his companions were able to stick with him and so he stayed away to claim a solo win after three-and-a-half hours of racing Sasha Weemaes (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise) won the sprint for second place ahead of Jarne Van Grieken (Acrog-Tormans) and Van Avermaet intensive training," Evenepoel said after his win but my bike handling is getting better and better I'd rather it end like this than just finish in the peloton – that's not in my character." Evenepoel's win comes off the back of a dominant ride at the recent Tour of Norway where he took stage victories on an uphill finish and from a small group sprint on the way to a 56-second overall triumph I thought that was more important after my period of rest following my Liège win." "The race ends with a time trial," he said "I can race defensively until the final day It'll be important to be with the best climbers in Switzerland "I've ridden the long and steep climbs – the focus was on sustaining long efforts Those are necessary to be good in Switzerland and then in the Vuelta a España."
