Halle Berry stands alone in Oscar history even after more than two decades since her groundbreaking win
The trailblazing actress now sees her 2002 Academy Award as more of an outlier than a watershed moment for Black women in Hollywood
In the nearly 100-year history of the prestigious ceremony
Berry remains the only Black woman to claim the Best Actress Award
a distinction that has led her to profound reflection in the upcoming Apple TV+ documentary “Number One on the Call Sheet.”
Berry’s reflections come amid continued disappointment over the lack of recognition for Black women in leading roles
with only 15 Black actresses ever nominated in the category throughout the Academy’s history
Her win for “Monster’s Ball” initially seemed to signal a turning point
but the subsequent two decades have challenged that optimism
“It’s forced me to ask myself, did it matter? Did it really change anything for women of color? For my sisters? For our journey?” Berry questions in the documentary, according to The Hollywood Reporter
The veteran actress points to the 2021 Academy Awards as a particularly revealing moment
when both Andra Day and Viola Davis were nominated for their biopic performances in “The United States vs
Billie Holiday” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” respectively
Halle Berry’s Oscar was so much more than a gold statue. It was a beacon.#NumberOneOnTheCallSheet — Now Streaming pic.twitter.com/HbR2vAHWJ0
Berry recalls feeling “100 percent sure” that one of them would take home the award that year
“For equally different and beautiful reasons
the Oscar ultimately went to Frances McDormand for “Nomadland,” marking her third win in the category
This outcome prompted Berry to reconsider the fundamental nature of the awards system
“The system is not really designed for us
and so we have to stop coveting that which is not for us,” she concludes
it’s ‘How do we touch the lives of people?’ and that fundamentally is what art is for.”
The documentary also features other prominent Black actresses expressing similar frustrations
who won Best Supporting Actress for “Ghost” in 1990
questions the persistent lack of recognition
This is a conversation people have every year.”
Henson offers her insight into the industry’s perspective
suggesting a systemic bias against seeing Black women as leads
“I don’t think the industry really sees us as leads
“They give us supporting [actress awards] like they give out candy canes
That just — I don’t know what to do with that
This sentiment echoes the experience of Mo’Nique
who won Best Supporting Actress for “Precious” in 2009 but claimed her career suffered afterward
Happy birthday to Mo’Nique, whose Oscar win for her astonishing performance in Precious is an all-timer pic.twitter.com/CwX1AnNvKT
Unlike Berry’s focus on systemic issues
Mo’Nique has pointed to personal betrayals within the industry
“What I understood was that when I won that Oscar, things would change in all the ways you’re saying: It should come with more respect, more choices and more money. It should, and it normally does,” Mo’Nique told The Hollywood Reporter in 2015
who allegedly told her she’d been “blackballed” because she “didn’t play the game.”
Mo’Nique’s situation highlights a complex dynamic where even recognition can lead to career challenges
“When you know the history of Hattie McDaniel
when you know the history of Eartha Kitt … when you know the history of these women that gave everything
and the moment they said something ain’t right
they were blackballed,” she stated in a 2020 interview with Claudia Jordan
After years of public conflict, Mo’Nique and Daniels have recently reconciled
collaborating on the Netflix film “The Deliverance,” set for release in August 2024
Daniels publicly apologized to Mo’Nique in 2022
“I am so sorry for hurting you in any way.”
At the same time, Henson says that Perry, who is also a powerful Hollywood movie broker, has paid her more and provided more opportunities than anyone else in the industry
As Berry’s comments and Mo’Nique’s journey illustrate
the relationship between Black actresses and Hollywood’s highest honors remains complicated
While the Oscars may represent the pinnacle of recognition in the industry
both women suggest that true artistic fulfillment might lie elsewhere — whether in touching audiences’ lives or creating work independently of an awards system that has historically overlooked Black women’s contributions in leading roles

News catches up with Halle Berry and Chris Hemsworth ahead of their movie ‘Crime 101’ & she gets candid about a special moment on set
The only black female actor to have won the leading actress award was speaking on documentary Number One on the Call Sheet along with Taraji P Henson and Whoopi Goldberg
Halle Berry has said she now believes her historic Oscars win in 2002, for Monster’s Ball, was an anomaly, and that fellow black female actors should therefore stop “coveting” Academy Awards.
Berry, now 58, is the only black woman to have won the leading actress Oscar in the awards’ nearly 100 year history. Cynthia Erivo’s nomination for Wicked earlier this year marks only the second time, after Viola Davis, that a woman of colour has been nominated for the leading actress Oscar more than once (she was previously nominated for Harriet). Only 15 black women have ever been in contention for the prize.
Speaking on upcoming documentary Number One on the Call Sheet, Berry said that the 23 years since her victory have “forced me to ask myself, did it matter? Did it really change anything for women of colour? For my sisters? For our journey?”

when both Andra Day and Viola Davis were nominated
for The United States vs Billie Holiday and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom respectively
“I felt 100% sure that this was the year one of them was gonna walk away with this award,” she says
adding: “For equally different and beautiful reasons
both women losing out to Frances McDormand for Nomadland made Berry reconsider
and so we have to stop coveting that which is not for us
it’s ‘How do we touch the lives of people?’ and that fundamentally is what art is for.”
The documentary also features Taraji P Henson and Whoopi Goldberg expressing amazement over the dearth of leading actress winners – and nominees
none of us were good enough?” Goldberg asks
This is a conversation people have every year.”
Goldberg won the best supporting actress Oscar in 1990 for Ghost; some 11 black women have now been given that award
“I don’t think the industry really sees us as leads
“They give us supporting [actress awards] like they give out candy canes
That just – I don’t know what to do with that
An earlier version stated incorrectly that Cynthia Erivo was the first woman of colour to have been nominated for the leading actress Oscar more than once

(KMOT) - The 2025 Minot High softball seniors know success
From a WDA championship two years ago to back-to-back top four finishes at the state tournament
Senior shortstop and pitcher Halle Baker is making a major impact in her final year
contributing to the team’s 11-1 conference record
Putting the bat to the ball: it’s one of Halle Baker’s favorite parts of the sport
and then everyone cheering you on is a huge thing
That just makes you feel good,” said Halle Baker
batting .491 and registering a team-high 32 RBIs in her senior season
“I’ve always loved hitting; it’s been a big thing for me
I’ve just learned to love every part of the sport and everything that we do here,” said Baker
Baker has also found success in the pitcher’s circle
striking out 34 batters in 34 innings pitched
but it’s also a great feeling to know that your team is behind you
so it really makes you feel all the good things that the sport has to bring,” said Baker
Her contributions to the Majettes squad aren’t always captured on the box score
“Her calm demeanor has just kept everybody fairly calm
she just stays really calm,” said head coach Gerard Cederstrom
With her playing days at Minot High coming to an end
it’s more than the big home runs and deep tournament runs that encompass a great career
A lot of my teammates are my really good friends
I think that’s the best thing I’ve gotten out of the sport is the relationships I’ve built with people— coaches and teammates,” said Baker
Baker and the Majettes are back in action Tuesday at Bismarck High

Berry tells CO— that backing startups marks her "second act in life."
It's not every day that an entrepreneur gets a random phone call from a celebrity angel investor intrigued by her startup's new product. But that's exactly what happened to Colette Courtion, Founder and CEO of Joylux
an eight-year-old company that makes feminine products for peri and postmenopausal women
In April 2023 Courtion got a call from actress Halle Berry's manager after Berry had tried her product — the vFit, a U.S
Food and Drug Administration-designated health and wellness device to improve feminine health powered by red light technology — and loved the results so much she invited Courtion to a meeting at her home in Beverly Hills
"When I picked up the phone and heard that Halle Berry wanted to meet
"I couldn't believe she was so keen on my product and was interested in my business
I had no idea the movie star was an angel investor."

That's because Berry's angel activities are not well publicized. Berry has her own wellness company called RESPIN and devotes a lot of her time funding and mentoring startups in the health and wellness and other industries when she is not busy with her acting career
A 58-year-old mother of two with type 2 diabetes
Berry wants to make a difference in people's lives by funding innovations that can address many common health problems she and other people face
"It's my second act in life," said Berry, who has already invested in six companies, including Pendulum Therapeutics
"And I want to back startups that focus on common health issues that are not being well addressed
Menopausal health is one area that's been overlooked by the medical community."
none of her success would have been possible without the backing of angel investors like Berry and others over the years
But finding angel investors in the early days to provide seed money so she could develop and clinically test her product was not easy
Courtion's funding challenges are not unique. Women garnered only 2.2% of all venture capital raised in the U.S. in 2023 and 2024, according to Carta
and entrepreneurs are rushing in to close the gap by becoming angel capital investors who focus on funding women-led startups in a wide range of fields — from healthcare and wellness to software and climate tech
These are accredited investors with a net worth of at least $1 million who have earned at least $200,000 in each of the past two years

'And I want to back startups that focus on common health issues that are not being well addressed.'

Nearly six months after DDG and Halle Bailey announced their breakup
the rapper has accused the Little Mermaid actress of keeping him from their 15-month-old son
DDG is trying to be a present father
Months after the rapper (real name Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr.) and ex Halle Bailey announced their breakup in October
he has alleged the Little Mermaid actress is keeping him from their 15-month-old son Halo
“I just don’t want it to come to the point where he’s like, ‘Alright, my pops not around,’” DDG explained during a livestream shared to YouTube March 8
I was more frustrated and annoyed than anything.”
who also detailed the custody predicament in a song released ahead of the livestream
emphasized that he felt that laying out the back-and-forth on a track was his only option
“I’ve been dealing with this s--t for a long time,” he noted
“I never spoke on it for the simple fact that I don’t like putting y’all in my real life business but I’m like
titled “Don’t Take My Son,” he detailed and included lyrics like
“Don’t take my son / ‘Cause he all I got / Trying to make me pay to see my son / That going to make me hot.”
Still, the 27-year-old—who split from Halle in October after over a year together—noted that he doesn’t want to take legal action concerning the custody dispute
“I don’t want to go to court,” he added in the livestream
“It’s going to get extremely messy and it don’t have to happen
I think it’s in her best interest to not want to go to court either
where we can just have a clear understanding.”
However, DDG posited that if the couple did bring their custody battle to court
he would be rewarded with more time with his son than he’s currently asking for
the judge is going to give me some time,” he continued
I’m gonna do whatever I want with my son.”
DDG doesn’t believe it’s the best option for the former couple
“I don’t want to go to court because it’s going to make her unhappy.”
As for Halle, she had previously slammed DDG for broadcasting their baby on his livestream shortly after the couple’s breakup
“I don't approve of my baby being on a stream tonight,” Halle
wrote in a November post on X before deactivating her account
“I wasn't told or notified and i am extremely upset to have my baby in front of millions of people."
“I am his mother and protector and saddened that I wasn't notified.”
News has reached out to reps for Halle regarding DDG’s latest comments but has not yet heard back
After years rising through the Hollywood ranks
she cemented her status as an A-list star with roles in the X-Men franchise
and a memorable turn as sexy NSA agent ‘Jinx’ in the James Bond blockbuster Die Another Day
this was also the period in which she made history by becoming the first African-American woman to win the ‘Best Actress’ Academy Award for her performance in 2001’s Monster’s Ball
It seemed like the only way was up for Berry, and for her follow-up project, she took a meeting with Martin Brest, the ‘Best Director’ nominated helmer of hits like Beverly Hills Cop
He was putting together a rom-com crime caper about a low-level mobster who falls in love with Ricki
the beautiful woman assigned to ensure he doesn’t make a mess of the kidnapping of a District Attorney
Unfortunately for this lovestruck gangster
If you think that doesn’t necessarily sound like the makings of a good movie
that didn’t stop two of Hollywood’s most prominent female stars from vying for the part of Ricki
Though the role eventually went to Jennifer Lopez
who signed up to star alongside future boyfriend Ben Affleck
and it was rumoured that she’d been cast in the film before being replaced by Lopez
Many years later, though, after Gigli had proven to be an unmitigated disaster that almost derailed Affleck’s career entirely and made “Bennifer” the butt of Hollywood’s jokes for a few years
Berry set the record straight on the Armchair Expert podcast
“Let me tell you what happened; here’s the tea
Berry was convinced she truly wanted to be a part of Gigli
Berry claimed it was Affleck who pulled rank and said he wanted Lopez to play Ricki for reasons that later became obvious
I realise why she got the job; I realise what was at play there!”
Naturally, though, when Gigli was released and became one of the biggest box-office debacles in Hollywood history
all while receiving reviews that were tantamount to assaults on the character of everyone involved
Berry counted her lucky stars that Lopez had goo-goo eyes for Affleck and nabbed the role
I’m glad she did,” the Never Let Go star admitted

Maine (WABI) -A proposed bill in Augusta is receiving major attention thanks to the support of an A-list celebrity
“I urge you, please pass this bill,” Halle Berry, actress and activist
Berry testified via Zoom in front the Maine Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee Friday afternoon. Berry spoke in support of LD 1079, An Act to Provide Comprehensive Perimenopause and Menopause Education.
The bill would direct DHHS to partner with health care providers in educating Mainers about the symptoms and processes surrounding perimenopause and menopause.
The 58-year-old actress testified about her own experience unknowingly being in perimenopause and menopause for 10 years.
She says doctors need to receive more education and training on this topic.
The bill now moves to a work session in the coming weeks.

Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry lent some star power testimony to a legislative committee public hearing Friday in Augusta on a bill related to perimenopause and menopause education.
The bill, LD 1079, requires the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to create educational partnerships with health care providers on menopause and perimenopause.
The bill calls for creation of informational materials about the symptoms and treatments of both perimenopause and menopause. The materials should also contain information about “how to talk to family and friends about perimenopause and menopause,” according to the bill.
Berry, 58, testified via video conference before the legislative Health and Human Services Committee Friday. The actress has also served as an activist for women’s health and women’s empowerment. She said she had been living with perimenopause and menopause for 10 years before officially being diagnosed.
Before that, she said, she was experiencing symptoms that her doctors on at least two occasions tried to misdiagnose as other conditions.
“When I would go see doctors, they kind of gaslit me,” she said. “They made me feel like I was overexaggerating -- I’m an actress, so I’m a drama queen, and I knew that something was wrong in my body, but I just didn’t know what.”
Co-sponsors Rep. Kristen Cloutier (D-Lewiston) and Senate President Mattie Daughtry (D-Brunswick) said the bill will allow women to educate themselves about the symptoms of menopause, ranging from hot flashes to cognitive issues. Education, they said, will empower women to seek assistance.
“Women shouldn’t have to wait until they feel like everything is wrong or they are losing their minds to know what they are going through,” Daughtry said.
Berry said she had little knowledge of the condition herself when she first began feeling symptoms.
“Nobody told me that when I got about 40, 42, 43, that this time of life was coming,” she said.
Berry asked the committee to recommend the bill pass.
“I urge you, please pass this bill,” she told the committee. “We need more education. Women deserve the support. We deserve to live good quality lives and get the treatment so that we can do that.”
‘He didn’t have to do it and he did it,’ said Berry

Halle Berry has praised Chris Hemsworth for standing up for her during the shooting of their latest movie
Oscar-winner Berry, 58, and Hemsworth, 41, are both leads in Crime 101, based on the novella of the same name written by Don Winslow
also stars Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan and Poor Things’ Mark Ruffalo
Berry and Hemsworth shared their mutual admiration for each other during the promotion of the film
as the Catwoman star revealed she had experienced some awkwardness during its making
“[He’s] a stand-up guy,” Berry told E! News at CinemaCon in Las Vegas
but he stood up for me in a moment in our movie
and instantly I knew right then I’m gonna follow this guy
be a fan of this guy for the rest of his life because he stood up for a woman
Hemsworth, who is due to start filming the next instalment of Avengers, returned the respects admitting he had been “very intimidated” to work with her.
“I’ve admired Halle’s work for many, many years,” he said. “I was obviously very intimidated to sit opposite her within a scene and try and, you know, not just be in awe of what she was doing.”
He added: “Certain people just bring out not just the best in you, but also sort of a comfort level where it feels like it’s a place to explore and it’s a place to examine different ideas and try different things. And that was the experience [with Berry]. I loved every second of it.”
Berry has attempted to end the rumours claiming she’ll return as Storm in Avengers: Doomsday, which starts shooting this month in London.
The actor was notably missing from the list of actors who would appear in the sequel, which is bringing back a number of stars from the films released between 2000 to 2016.
Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden will all reprise their roles as Professor X, Magneto and Cyclops, as will Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn as Nightcrawler and Mystique, respectively.
Kelsey Grammer will also return as Beast, having shown up in a post-credits sequence for 2024 film The Marvels.
