There is an open casting call for the leading role in the new northern-based film “In Alaska,” which is co-directed by filmmakers Jaap van Heusden
Filming is scheduled to begin in March 2025
The life of a 17-year-old boy from a small Alaskan village changes overnight as he becomes a wanted terrorist for shooting a hole into the trans-Alaska pipeline before escaping into the wild
Fleeing an FBI manhunt in the United States
the boy escapes to Canada where he reconnects with his Inuit mother’s roots in Nunavut and learns for the first time “what it actually means to be alive.”
an upcoming feature film from Dutch director Jaap van Heusden
co-written and co-directed by Iqaluit-based filmmaker Vinnie Karetak
Described by Karetak as a “smorgasbord of feelings and real situations,” the storyline of the film
is partly inspired by the 2001 FBI investigation into Alaskan hunter Daniel Carson Lewis
who drunkenly shot a hole into the trans-Alaska oil pipeline
It’s also inspired by another story van Heusden was once told by an Alaskan villager about a man who committed the same crime but escaped to Canada and was never found
contacted Karetak in 2019 to collaborate on the film’s script
Jaap had reached out to me with a story idea that he wanted to get some opinions on as it has some Inuit elements,” Karetak said in a joint interview with van Heusden
“He said that he didn’t want to be that white guy from Europe writing stories or character backgrounds for the Inuit characters.”
Karetak said his input helped add “depth and perspective” to some of the characters
who the coming-of-age story is based around
“One of the things I really appreciated in working with Vinnie was that there were people who kept telling me that the dark themes in Woody’s story might reinforce negative stereotypes
but he was very firm in wanting to be truthful,” van Heusden said
With plans to start filming in March in Nunavut
Kris & Kara Casting issued an open casting call for Woody
a role van Heusden and Karetak hope to fill before auditioning the rest of the film’s characters
“We’re looking for authenticity,” said Karetak
the character of Woody comes into himself later on in the film
so we’d like to see that person become sort of radiant with pride and a sense of belonging which he didn’t previously have.”
No acting experience is required for the role but van Heusden
who was a young actor himself before going into filmmaking
recognizes it can be a “scary but ultimately rewarding” experience
They’re still deciding which northern community to film in
Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk are potential locations
“There’s going to be an influx of over 30 people
including staff and actors in the community
so it’s a logistical thing we’re trying to figure out,” said Karetak
Van Heusden hopes the film’s production will “bring something good to the community” in a way that doesn’t overwhelm residents
Some of the larger scenes could be filmed in Iqaluit
who has been involved in other northern productions such as Qanurli
a popular comedy show in Inuktitut on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network
also recognized the high costs that may be involved
“Flying equipment in and out of a community is one of the most preventative things about filming up North,” he said
The film is a joint production with IJswater Films in the Netherlands
the film has received funding from the Netherlands Film Fund and Telefilm Canada

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder
with a long preclinical and prodromal phase
AD has been modeled in many transgenic animal lines and cognitive functioning has been tested using several widely used behavioral tasks
are not always suited for repeated longitudinal testing and are often associated with acute stress such as animal transfer
This makes it challenging to relate cognitive dysfunction in animal models to cognitive decline observed in AD patients
we designed an automated figure-8-maze (F8M) to test mice in a delayed alternation task (DAT) in a longitudinal manner
Mice were rewarded when they entered alternate sides of the maze on subsequent trials
Automation as well as connection of the F8M set-up with a home cage reduces experimenter interference and minimizes acute stress
thus making it suitable for longitudinal testing and facilitating clinical translation
we monitored cognitive functioning of 2-month-old APPswe/PSEN1dE9 (APP/PS1) mice over a period of 4 months
The percentage of correct responses in the DAT did not differ between wild-type and transgenic mice from 2 to 6 months of age
6-month-old mice displayed an increase in the number of consecutive incorrect responses
These results demonstrate the feasibility of longitudinal testing using an automated F8M and suggest that APP/PS1 mice are not impaired at delayed spatial alternation until 6 months of age under the current experimental conditions
it is crucial to perform animal studies in which disease-relevant cognitive functioning is monitored over extended periods of time
We therefore performed a longitudinal experiment in APP/PS1 mice at 2–6 moa to identify symptom progression as a function of age
When comparing task performance of APP/PS1 mice to wild-type control mice
we found similar response accuracy for both genotypes
the number of consecutive incorrect responses made by APP/PS1 mice was increased at 6 moa
we discuss several advantages and limitations of the automated F8M test set-up
Mouse lines were maintained on a C57BL/6JCrl background (Charles River Laboratories)
and experiments were performed with individually-housed male mice
Wild-type and transgenic littermate mice were used in the study
Mice were kept on a reversed 12-h day–night cycle
they were water-deprived in the home cage for maximally 18 h preceding access to the F8M
All experiments were approved by the Central Committee for Animal Experiments (CCD) and the Animal Welfare Body of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in full compliance with the directive 2010/63/EU
The F8M (24.3 cm × 33.3 cm × 8 cm) has 4 cm wide corridors and is made of black Perspex that transmits infrared light (Figure 1)
An infrared light box is positioned beneath the maze
which allows for tracking of the animal with a camera that is located above the maze
The entrance of the maze can be connected to the animal’s home cage
Three swing doors surrounding the entrance open in one direction only
thus ensuring that the animal always moved through the maze in the same direction
Two motorized doors at the T-junction are controlled by the computer and open horizontally
Mice received a drop (18 μL) of water supplemented with 1% sucrose upon entering the correct maze arm
automate the water supply at each reward location
Opening the first valve allows the water droplet to be formed; opening the second valve retracts the previously formed drop by creating a vacuum
The maze was cleaned with ethanol in between sessions
The maze is made of infrared-transmitting perspex (top lid not shown in photograph) and placed on top of an infrared light box
The F8M can be connected to the mouse’s home cage so that the mouse can enter the maze voluntarily (1)
three unidirectional swing doors (2) limit movement of the mouse to one direction as indicated by the arrows
The two motorized doors (3; shown in closed position) are under computer control
a sucrose water reward is delivered to either of two reward orifices (4) in precise preset quantities
Four computer-controlled valves (5) control the delivery of the reward
as well as its retraction by a vacuum pump into a container (6) when not consumed
Korea) to control the maze’s motorized doors and valves based on the animal’s position within the maze
The software creates a time-stamped file with the executed commands and the animal’s responses and location
The experiment consisted of a training phase and four test phases (Figure 2A)
two swing doors were placed in the animals’ home cage to familiarize mice with the doors
mice underwent an 11-day training phase that consisted of habituation
In the test phases following the training phase
the protocol was shortened to 5 days and consisted of testing sessions only
Illustration of the delayed alternation task (DAT) procedure in the figure-8-maze
(A) After being exposed to swing doors (SDs) in the home cage for 2 days (green)
mice performed a DAT training phase at 2–2.5 moa and were tested at 3
mice were exposed to the maze during two habituation sessions (red)
and had four testing sessions at each of the four delays (no delay
(C) Test phases consisted of four no-delay sessions and two sessions of the 10-
mice were free to explore the maze with the motorized doors open and either 2 (day 1
Sucrose-containing rewards (blue drops in graphical representation) could be obtained at either side of the maze
mice performed 20 trials of forced alternation
(F) No-delay sessions consisted of a forced run (left image)
whereby the animal was rewarded when entering the arm that had not been visited on the previous run
the animal was contained within the middle compartment (second and fourth image) for a period of 10
or 40 s before the motorized doors would open and it could make a response
Mice were first habituated to the maze in two 10-min sessions on subsequent days (Figure 2B). During the first and second habituation session, two and three swing doors were present, respectively (Figure 2D)
Sucrose-containing water rewards were provided at either side of the maze
After the habituation phase, mice underwent 20 shaping trials during which the right and left motorized doors were opened in alternating order (Figure 2B). Each trial consisted of the animal starting in the center zone, entering the left or right arm of the maze, and then returning to the center zone (Figure 2E)
First, mice were tested in the F8M without a delay (Figure 2B). The session started with a rewarded forced-choice run into the right arm of the maze (Figure 2F)
All 20 subsequent trials were free-choice runs in which the correct response was for the animal to choose the opposite arm from the one it had visited on the previous trial
A correct response was rewarded with a sucrose-containing water reward
whereas no reward was administered upon an incorrect response
the motorized doors would open when the animal entered the center zone and they would close once the animal had moved into either of the two side arms
The animal performed four sessions of one forced run followed by 20 free-run trials over 2 days
Performance was calculated as the percentage of correct responses per 20 free-choice trials
Every test phase started with no-delay testing sessions to ensure that later task performance
would reflect the animals’ ability to alternate rather than the ability to remember task rules
Statistical details of experiments can be found in the respective results sections and in tables
Results and graphs report mean ± SEM
The number of animals used in each experiment is provided in the figure legends
Sessions in which mice did not complete 20 trials (for no-delay and 10-s delay) or 10 trials (for 20 and 40-s delay) within 1 h were excluded from analysis
these data suggest that also in that absence of repeated testing over the course of several months
6-month-old mice of both genotypes can perform the task
DAT performance of wild-type and APP/PS1 mice at 2–2.5
gray) mice during training and test phases
two-way ANOVA showed an effect of session (#)
with significant differences between sessions 3–5
a main effect of genotype (*) was observed
Analysis of test phase 3 showed a main effect of session
with significant differences between sessions 4–9 and 6–10
(B) APP/PS1 mice showed an increase in the percentage of consecutive incorrect responses in test phase 4 at 6 moa
(C) Choice reaction time of APP/PS1 mice was significantly lower compared to wild-type controls in the training phase and test phase 3
APP/PS1 mice were more active than wild-type mice
Vertical lines indicate the start of a new delay interval
p < 0.05; *main effect of genotype p < 0.05; ^interaction effect p < 0.05
Next, the percentage of consecutive incorrect responses was analyzed since this parameter has been shown to be increased by hippocampal inactivation (Yoon et al., 2008) (Figure 3B). No main or interaction effects were found in the training phase, test phase 1, test phase 2, or test phase 3 (Table 2)
did show a main effect of genotype [F(1,10) = 5.00
indicating that APP/PS1 mice make more consecutive incorrect responses than wild-type mice at 6 moa
Test phase 4 did not reveal a main effect of session or an interaction effect
These findings suggest that the percentage of consecutive incorrect responses might be a sensitive measure of hippocampal impairment in APP/PS1 mice
Choice reaction time (CRT) was defined as the time period between the opening of the motorized doors and the moment the animal enters either maze arm. CRT showed a main effect of genotype during the training phase [F(1,9) = 6.76, p = 0.029], indicating a decrease in CRTs for APP/PS1 mice (Figure 3C). No significant differences were found in test phase 1 and test phase 2 (Table 3)
Test phase 3 revealed a main effect of genotype [F(1,10) = 5.50
p = 0.041] and an interaction effect [F(9,84) = 2.05
Test phase 4 did not show any significant differences
these results indicate that APP/PS1 mice had reduced CRTs during the training phase and test phase 3
To determine whether differences in CRT between wild-type and APP/PS1 mice were related to changes in general activity levels, we analyzed overall activity of the mice (Figure 3D). During the training phase, a main effect of session [F(4.1,41) = 4.0, p = 0.0073] was found (Table 4)
were found in test phase 1 [Session F(4.2,42) = 3.4
p = 0.0087; Session × Genotype interaction F(9,90) = 3.0
p < 0.0001; Session × Genotype interaction F(9,90) = 3.2
p < 0.0001; Session × Genotype interaction F(9,90) = 3.0
p = 0.0004; Session × Genotype interaction F(9,90) = 9.2
These findings show that APP/PS1 mice are significantly more active than wild-type mice in all test phases
they did not also find a change in general activity
It would be interesting to further investigate the relationship between hyperactivity and attention in future experiments
Whereas spontaneous alternation is a commonly used measure of working memory
studies on rewarded alternation with variable delay intervals in the APP/PS1 mouse model are sparse
There are several potential explanations for the absence of an age-related decline in F8M response accuracy. First, it might be that even though the delayed alteration in the F8M is hippocampus-dependent, the hippocampal dysfunction previously observed in APP/PS1 mice is not sufficient to impair task performance. As working memory is thought to require communication between the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (Jin and Maren, 2015)
cortical mechanisms might be able to compensate for (mild) hippocampal dysfunction during a short-term working memory task
when we trained an additional group of mice at 6 moa only
APP/PS1 mice still performed at wild-type levels
suggesting that mice of both genotypes can perform the task in the absence of procedural memory being formed due to repeated testing over the course of several months
we would not expect habit formation to be sufficient to perform the DAT with extended delays
as these delays interrupt the execution of continuous habitual motor programs
a forced run-free run protocol as well as fewer or no no-delay sessions might be able to minimize the formation of procedural memory in future experiments
and mice were checked on a daily basis with no signs of stress or compromised health being observed
it would be ideal to permanently connect the home cages to an F8M apparatus such that water deprivation is no longer necessary
suggesting higher sensitivity than the DAT
The preferred use of different procedures will depend on the aim of the study
An advantage of the current task set-up is that the animal is confined to a spatial compartment during the delay phase of the DAT
thus making it difficult for the mouse to encode the correct choice option by the position of its body
when performing in vivo measurements during task performance
neural activity can be linked to specific cognitive processes (i.e.
keeping online a previous arm entry and decision making) taking place at particular locations in the maze to better dissect processing steps during precise moments of the task
The absence of a genotype difference in the percentage of correct responses might suggest that our mice are still too young to detect these (pre)clinical symptoms
Irrespective of how exactly DAT phenotypes translate to human AD
the added value of the current set-up and protocol is that it allows for longitudinal testing and keeps acute stress imposed onto the animals low
due to the high degree of maze automation and the connection of the maze to the home cage
Longitudinal testing is especially important in AD as the disease is characterized by progressive loss of cognition and has a long preclinical and prodromal phase
Longitudinal studies allow for a better understanding of disease mechanisms in relation to symptom onset and progression
they provide advantages to translational AD research
Longitudinal screening can facilitate linking the different stages of cognitive dysfunction in animal models to the various phases of cognitive decline observed in AD patients
it could aid in identifying risk and/or protective factors in the progression of MCI to AD and in predicting the effectiveness of potential treatments in mitigating or preventing cognitive decline

Silver went to 2020 Belgian National Champion Laurens Sweeck, unable to resist Nys' surging move on the sixth lap of seven and crossing the line nine seconds back, with Toon Aerts coming home third 11 seconds adrift
and thick mud and featuring a dangerously greasy downhill bend nicknamed the 'corner of death'
the tensely fought race saw no rider able to gain the upper hand until Nys made his definitive charge for glory
The son of longstanding cyclocross great Sven Nys
the 22-year-old Thibau only opened up a margin of a handful of seconds by the finish
But despite looking back repeatedly as he closed to the line
the gap was enough to ensure the Baloise-Trek Lions rider could clinch his first national 'cross title at professional level
and the tenth gold cyclo-cross medal in his family's history.
“I tested my legs early in the race and felt good,” Nys said afterwards
"then I really went for it when the rest were on the limit
but if you have the European and Belgian champion's jerseys
you want to have more wins as well - to make those jerseys shine even more."
Dry weather rendered the very muddy and snowy course a little less risky
but some crashes on the first lap as the race slowly fired into life nonetheless encouraged a cautious start for one of the mostly keenly anticipated national cyclocross titles this Sunday
a group of five riders had tentatively moved towards the front
including most of the main protagonists of the day: Nys
2023 Belgian champion Michael Vanthourenhout
only 20 seconds separated the first 20 riders by the end of lap one
so in stark contrast to the elite women's race where Marion Norbert Riberolle was clearly superior to the rest
nobody seemed able to get an early advantage
Aerts was on the front of the group as they clattered up and over the mid-lap bridge for a second time
while Nys led the front group of five riders across the line at the end of lap two with a narrow advantage
and even he warmed up notably later and bridged across the leading break
Living up to his status of pre-race favourite
Sweeck began to take more and more turns on the front
although with riders as concerned with staying upright as opening gaps
the notable lack of outright attacks stretched deep into the third lap
the general attrition rate on such tough terrain was such it allowed Nys
Verstrynge and Vanthourenhout to eke out a double-digit advantage on their closest chasers.
Could this be the defining break of the race
Iserbyt and Joran Wyseure made a major effort to get across - for which they both paid the price later - as Nys tested the water with vicious little digs on the climbs and Sweeck put in yet more of his trademark sustained accelerations on the flatter segments
Yet by the half way point of the seven-lap
beyond Iserbyt finally dropping off the radar for good
nothing was really decided and with six riders ahead
as Sweeck piled on even more pressure on the most waterlogged
often remaining seated on some of the most difficult little ascents to maintain his momentum and distance his rivals
It was a strategy which paid dividends given only Aerts could follow and as the leading duo turned their heads in the finishing straight to check the distance on their rivals
their gap was already up to nearly ten seconds
But despite his gloomy headshakes - as if throwing in the towel - Nys did manage to close the gap again
with Vanthourenhout and Vandeputte a little further back
Nys timed his move perfectly to dive through the inside into the lead
Sweeck faded slightly and Vanthourenhout crashed on an ultra-treacherous downhill
and Nys suddenly found himself leading solo - and leading well
with Vandeputte a further four behind and to judge by the way Nys blasted up the final climbs as if he was just starting the race
it was clear he had a lot of energy left in the tank
Vandeputte faded but still managed to hang on for fourth
but by that point and after such a long period where nobody could get the upper hand
Nys victory was definitively in the bag and the podium finishers alongside him were all but decided as well
"I quickly realised that I had the legs to move up and get past my rivals
"I also tested my legs with a little attack
and I realized that I could gap the rest when I wanted to
it was just a question of finding the right moment to drop them.”

On the heels of a new Inuit series for Netflix and CBC
more Inuit representation in film is on the horizon with a new movie under a casting call in Iqaluit
Filmmakers Jaap van Heusden and Arviat's Vinnie Karetak have been seeking actors for their feature 'In Alaska.'
“We’ve expanded our search from some of the roles that we have that are Inuit
that we will need to fill for our filming to be done in Nunavut
hopefully at the end of April,” Karetak told Nunavut News
He became involved when van Heusden sought “an eye for an Inuit project” in the fall of 2019
“and to see if it was something that the Inuit community could stand behind..
the roles of Inuit descent should be developed by an Inuk
I wasn’t the first person to respond to him..
I happened to give him some of my thoughts
and he eventually asked me to work on this
It was quite the opportune time for me to work on this
as Iqaluit had just gone on lockdown [during Covid].”
Van Heusden developed an interest in the Arctic when his journalist wife was writing in Alaska
The film itself is set in Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk
but will likely be filmed in Iqaluit for logistical reasons
A news story from years ago about a man shooting the Alaskan pipeline and causing a huge leak inspired the movie's screenplay
“In real life, the guy got caught pretty quickly..
so [van Heusden] based it off that story
turned it into a younger guy who’s troubled
and it ended [up being] a much longer chase than what actually happened.”
Karetak was working with Van Heusden three times a week
overcoming a six-hour time difference between them
“All the new characters were developed and vetted and made more realistic for Inuit to see and watch and go through
and not glorify all the issues we have in the Arctic,” Karetak explains
the legacy of the residential school system
we know there are social issues and mental health issues and suicide issues
whose mother was essentially abandoned by her husband
and so she’s living in a trailer in a small town in Alaska
and her son is feeling abandoned by the whole world
so he gets in trouble with the law and tries to escape
and was convinced to sneak across the border
and so he found solace and peace in the new community
It’s a coming-of-age story with a bit of a chase scene.”
Karetak adds that his input was valuable for “the historical drama,” as well as giving a perspective on mental health issues
but it’s about stuff I have seen and experienced."
with the first half expected to take place in Iqaluit in April
“We’re doing the Nunavut portion first because the time of year we want to do it
we’re strongly suggesting people [submit] online their application or audition tapes
The second phase of the filming will happen in September
Roles under consideration for casting include the principal role of an Inuk mother (a female in her 40s or 50s)
supporting role of Inuit father (a male aged 45-60)
and Inuit grandmother (a female aged 65-80)
Auditions are being held at the Aqsarniit Hotel in Iqaluit on Friday Jan. 3 from 5 p.m
Applications can be submitted online at bit.ly/inuitcasting

Italy takes a pair of podium spots with Mattia Cattaneo in third
Switzerland's Stefan Küng finished just shy of 10 seconds slower to take the silver medal
while Mattia Cattaneo was a surprising third
It was a tight race between the 2021 European Champion Küng and the 2018 under-23 European Champion Affini
with Küng going out harder in the first 10 kilometres
The Swiss rider was quickest at that first check
Affini had picked up his pace considerably while Küng was more steady and came through the check 0.62 seconds slower than Affini
Küng rallied and clawed back a few seconds but it wasn't enough
He came in 9.59 slower than the Italian's time
Affini is the first Italian winner of the European men's time trial which was added to the UEC's programme in 2016
and it was an emotional moment for the 28-year-old who received a congratulatory phone call from compatriot Filippo Ganna after the finish
"I don't know what to say," Affini said fighting back tears

Belgium had opted for an unusual two-sprinter team tactic, with Merlier and Jasper Philipsen given the freedom to ride their own sprint
Philipsen managed to take the best line along the barriers but Merlier had far more speed and came along the outside. He soon got ahead of his rivals in sight of the line and had time to celebrate as Olav Kooij (Netherlands) took second and Madis Mihkels (Estonia) beat Philipsen to take third
Italy had controlled the attacks by Mathieu van der Poel (Netherlands) and Mads Pedersen (Denmark) during the 222km race and even led out the sprint only to be swamped in the final five hundred metres
Jonathan Milan struggled in the fight for the wheels and only finished 13th
Merlier took his 14th and arguably the biggest win of the 2024 season
He celebrated with his family and young son
He admitted that he lost his chain with three hundred metres to go but recovered in time to launch his winning sprint
"My chain came off with three hundred metres to go and I thought it was over
found a gap and came out of the bunch at the right moment."
Merlier confirmed that Belgium had a two-sprinter strategy because he was confident he could win
"I asked to be in the race because I believed I could win the championship
after twice being the Belgian national champion
I had two hard crashes in the last two weeks but I kept believing."
The riders signed on under a timid Belgian September sun
The sprinters were the happiest about the conditions
sensing their chances of a bunch sprint had increased
but they also feared that the climbs and cobbles of the 222.7km race around the Limburg lanes could shake up the race
The riders rolled out of the shadows of the Heusden-Zolder velodrome at speed
Nils Brun (Switzerland) and Félix Ritzinger (Austria) soon forming the early break
France put Rémi Cavagna on the front to chase and Le Berre was soon ordered to sit on
with Oliveira shouting to Le Berre to drop back and other riders trying to gap him
The four plus Le Berre pushed on on the short laps of Hasselt but so did the peloton
with other nations putting a rider on the front to ensure the break never gained more than two minutes
The work of Cavagna reduced the gap to a minute as the attackers started the Printhagendreef cobbles
The Op de Kriezel cobbles came soon after and had more of an effect
Ritzinger was dropped from the attack as Le Burre and France changed their tactics
deciding to ride and force other teams to chase
the race twisted again and the final opened up early when Mathieu van der Poel made his first move
He surged away on an exposed sector and suddenly it was 'race on!'
Matteo Trentin joined him to defend Italy's interests
as did other riders and Dutch teammate Mike Teunissen
They soon caught the break but the peloton soon caught them to bring the race back together
trying to make for a hard race but he was marked each time
as the riders covered the first of three rolling and cobbled circuits
van der Poel went again and was again marked by Trentin
Tim Merlier had to chase after a puncture and roadside wheel change
a quality group of chasers joined the van der Poel group to form a dangerous attack
Kasper Asgreen and Bjerg were there with Pedersen and so they drove the pace
as the hilly circuit and cobbles inspired real Classics racing
Teunissen accelerated from the attack and Pedersen and Trentin joined him
Van der Poel wanted to be part of the action but missed the move
The race came back together once again and Italy tried to control the peloton but more attacks came on the Op de Kriezel cobbled sector as the riders began the last lap of the circuit in south Limburg
Pedersen made another attack to try to split the peloton
Van der Poel jumped in with him again and so did Christophe Laporte of France and Danny van Poppel of the Netherlands
They did not want to wait for a sprint finish
Eduardo Affini used his time trial skills and domestique's speed to chase
calling for Germany and Belgium to help him
There was suddenly only 50 km to race and only 50 or so riders in the peloton due to the intense and fast racing
In the attack were Mathieu van der Poel and Danny van Poppel (Netherlands)
Jonas Rutsch (Germany) and Arthur Kluckers (Luxembourg)
They gave their all but Italy and Belgium combined to drive the chase
with France and the Netherlands sitting in their wheels
The break and the peloton powered over the Kolmontberg and Zammelenberg climbs
with Affini and Maestri pulling for Italy and Teuns and Laurenz Rez for Belgium
A crash split the peloton just before the Printhagendreef cobbled sector but the catch finally came with 26km to go
the chances of a high-speed sprint finish becoming more certain
the Italian team took control of the peloton to set the pace and dissuade other attacks on the ride to the finish
only Mosca absent after working a lot earlier in the race
also waiting for a sprint finish were Olav Kooij (Netherlands)
Jasper Philipsen (Belgium) and Tim Merlier (Belgium) in the 53-rider group
The riders passed through the finish with 14.2km to go
with Germany and France moving up to the front
There was a moment of calm before the sprint
Kasper Asgreen tried a solo attack and the Dane was allowed to hang out front
only to be swept up with five kilometres to go
Søren Kragh Andersen then tried again for Denmark but Italy and especially Affini quickly chased him down
Italy led out the sprint but seemed to lack a final acceleration
The Dutch train moved up to position Kooj with two kilometres to go on a wide section of road
Matteo Trentin led into the final kilometre and then Mattia Cattaneo took over in the final kilometre but the Italians were suddenly swamped before Simone Consonni could drag Milan clear for a run to the line
Philipsen surged along the barriers and looked in the perfect position to win
Yet he lacked power and his Belgian rival Merlier surged past on the outside to win the sprint and so take the European title and pull on the distinctive European champion's jersey

The reigning Belgian time trial champion completed the 31.2km course in a time of 39 minutes at an average speed of 47.984kph to claim her first-ever European title
Van Dijk took the silver medal at a deficit of 44 seconds, while Christina Schweinberger (Austria) rounded out the podium with bronze a further 19 seconds back
I have to thank my coach who drew up a pace plan at the Olympic Games and here,” Kopecky said after her win
so it was a very nice time trial where I could ride the power that was set
“I gained time at every intermediate point
so that was good for the morale along the way
The decisive part was definitely between 10 and 15km with a headwind
You could make a big difference there.”
Norway’s Katrine Aalerud was the quickest of the early runners
recording a time of 40:25 to take over the hot seat from Mieke Kröger (Germany) by 24 seconds
She’d only last in the provisional lead for a matter of minutes
with Van Dijk coming through to set the quickest time at both checkpoints and the finish
The Dutchwoman was the 15th starter of 27 competitors and had won the title four times in a row between 2016 and 2019
Her time held strong as the next several riders
and Agnieszka Skalniak-Sójka (Poland) crossed the line
Vittoria Guazzini (Italy) was the sixth-last woman to finish
taking over second place in the process with a time of 40:10
but she wouldn’t stay on the podium as the late runners came to the line
Kopecky’s time at the first checkpoint – 13:25 – was three seconds up on Van Dijk
an advantage she extended to 15 seconds at the second checkpoint
she had added 29 seconds to that lead to take over the hot seat
Only Riejanne Markus (Netherlands) and Schweinberger remained out on the course by that point
though both lagged over a minute behind Kopecky
Markus’ time of 40:06 saw her briefly take over the bronze medal position before Schweinberger raced home just two seconds up to secure the final spot on the podium behind Kopecky and Van Dijk

sprinting to victory from a full peloton in Hasselt
The 22-year-old scored the Netherlands' third gold medal of the week after a perfect run-in to the line for her and her team
Her Dutch teammate and lead-out woman Scarlett Souren finished off a one-two in second place.
Eleonora Gasparrini finished third to take bronze – Italy's fourth medal of the Championships
Van Rooijen's win came after her Dutch squad had controlled the final kilometres of the 101km race

Belgium had attempted several moves to send riders clear once the early break of Mikka Holm (Denmark) and Nela Slanikova (Czechia) had been reeled in
though no big names managed to slip clear and disrupt the sprint
As the race hit the final of the local laps around Hasselt some 14km out
a crash took several riders out of contention
Finnish sprint hope and newly crowned U23 time trial champion Anniina Ahtosalo was among them
with the 21-year-old eventually rolling home in 74th place at 1:42 down

surfed the wheels to perfection and then surged away to win the elite women's road race title at the UEC Road European Championships in Limburg
The Dutch team led the field into the final flat kilometres of the 162km race from Heusden-Zolder to Hasselt
at speeds reaching more than 53km/h.
Although France and Italy challenged the Netherlands with their own lead-outs
jumped on the Italian train and then launched the fastest sprint to the line
third-placed Daria Pikulik (Poland) and fourth-place Clara Copponi (France) by several bike lengths
Wiebes' victory marks the sixth consecutive win for the Netherlands in the elite women's EUC road race
only beaten by Italy's Marta Bastianelli in the 2018 edition
The elite women's field faced a 162 km hilly road race from Heusden-Zolder to Hasselt
The peloton passed through the finish line for the first time just 27km into the race and then embarked on opening short circuits
a large loop and finishing circuits in Hasselt
There were six cobbled sectors on the course that added to the dynamics of the race along with four categorised ascents: Kolmontberg (700m at 4.4%) and Zammelenberg (800m at 3.8%)
which were tackled a second time on the final lap of the large circuit
before entering the Hasselt finish circuits
mechanicals and a flurry of attacks as the peloton departed from Heusden-Zolder but the field remained intact as they entered the first cobbled sectors of the race
The Dutch team with defending champion Mischa Bredewold managed the pace at the front of the field but after multiple attacks from riders on the Belgian and Spanish teams
and then a countermove from Nikola Nosková (Czech Republic)
the field split with roughly 50 riders in the front group
Mireia Benito (Spain) was the first rider to gain any significant time on the peloton
pushing her lead out to 20 seconds ahead of the back-to-back climb over the Kolmontbberg and Zammelenberg on the first large circuit
Benito crested the two climbs and maintained a gap of 25 seconds over the peloton
while Jade Wiel (France) attempted to bridge across to the solo breakaway rider
Wiel's efforts to bridge across were short lived
however and both she and Benito's time out front came to an end as the race reached the Op de Kriezel cobblestone sector with 58 km to go
Loes Adegeest and Thatlita de Jong formed a new five-rider move but that too was short lived and the reduced field was back together on the second large circuit ahead of the Kolmontbberg and Zammelenberg
Another series of attacks came from riders from the Netherlands
but Sara Martin (Spain) was the only rider to successfully open a gap inside 30km to go
As the Spanish rider pushed her lead out to 20 seconds
Germany's Lea Lin Teutenberg and then her teammate Lippert gave chase
followed by Nina Berton (Luxembourg) and Marion Norbert (Belgium) but none were strong enough to make it across the gap
Martin's gap increased to nearly 30 seconds as she raced through the finish line at the start of the last 15 km circuit
But the eight-rider Dutch team pulled to the front of the peloton
slashing the gap in half on the flat circuit
The Dutch riders led the field into the final kilometres of the race with a lead-out that hit speeds of over 53 km/h
They were eventually challenged by the French and Italian teams inside the last kilometre and the sprint became chaotic as Italy surged on the left.
Wiebes lost her lead out but wisely got on the Italian train and then kicked at the same as Balsamo with two hundred metres to go
She was significantly faster than Balsamo and anyone else
taking the sixth consecutive elite women's road race title for the Netherlands.

It is an intense course with a lot of steep climbs

Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Kuhn in a 13-rider leading group heading early in lap 2
Van Aert led the reduced group into lap 3 with Ward Huybs (Baloise Trek)
Nieuwenhuis and Del Grosso the only riders holding his pace
Del Grosso put in a surprisingly confident ride
pushing the pace on the fourth lap and forcing Iserbyt and Van Aert to chase
it was Iserbyt pushing the pace and Van Aert found himself caught behind Joran Wyseure (Crelan-Corendon) and four seconds back
but soon the seven leading riders came back together
Van Aert finally came to the fore on lap five after a mistake from Iserbyt
drawing out Del Grosso and opening a gap but he didn't seem ready to push the pace
He came to the line at the start of lap six with four companions - Vandeputte
and Del Grosso but the ease in pace allowed Wyseure and Huybs to rejoin
Van Aert finally put the pedal to the metal heading into the penultimate lap and
leaving the rest of the group six seconds down
Iserbyt tried to match the Jumbo-Visma rider but on the final lap

World champion outsprints Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado after gripping duel
Van Empel had to fight hard for her victory
recovering from a mid-race crash and then withstanding some fierce attacking from Alvarado on the final lap
The race pitted the world champion’s power against Alvarado’s technical skills
and the contest was too close to call for much of the finale
once Van Empel resisted Alvarado’s last onslaught
the direction of travel finally looked clear
but she was unable to match Van Empel’s turn of speed
"I was really keen to be good here," Van Empel said afterwards.
Inge van der Heijden (Crelan-Corendon) produced a fine performance
pressing clear of the chasers midway through the race and coming home third on the day
while Sanne Cant (Fenix–Deceuninck) took fourth at 40 seconds
Marie Schreiber (SD Worx) was quickest off the mark at the start
racing to the front and stretching out the field on the flat and fast opening section
She was soon joined by Superprestige leader Annemarie Worst (777)
Van Empel was already beginning to run through her repertoire
and it looked as though the world champion was eager to make a statement after her missing out in Gavere 24 hours earlier
and the Dutchwoman came to the fore on the second lap
launching an acceleration that saw Worst and Schreiber lose contact with the front group
and the remainder of the race would be a thrilling duel between the front two
who both enjoyed periods of supremacy without ever distancing the other
when Van Empel opened a lead on Alvarado on the steepest climb and then tried to press home her advantage on the technical
It was almost her undoing: Van Empel crashed on the descent
falling on the same knee she injured the previous afternoon
while Alvarado cruised past to open a six-second lead by the end of the lap
“I fell off my bike with all my weight and landed on my knee
I thought for a moment: shit,” Van Empel said
“But you might as well get back up and luckily
you can’t give Ceylin too much space
diligently closed the gap again on lap four and she again proceeded to pile the pressure on Alvarado in the same point on the course
while Van Empel was understandably cautious on the descent
Van Empel pressed again but Alvarado was already clawing her way back on even before the world champion was stalled by lapped riders
The pair took the bell with a winning lead and they slowed as they prepared for the final onslaught
Alvarado looked the sharper on the final lap
trying repeatedly to open a gap over Van Empel
but once the world champion survived the last climb and descent
the balance tipped decisively in her favour
and she was a comfortable winner in the two-up sprint
Van der Heijden was the best of the rest ahead of Cant
Kristýna Zemanová (Brilon Racing Team) also impressed among the chasers in the middle portion of the race
which means her overall lead in the Superprestige series is cut to just one point ahead of Alvarado with two rounds remaining
Alvarado will sense a chance to move into the lead as soon as Thursday when the series resumes in Diegem

BLACK NIGHTS 2023 Competition
by Davide Abbatescianni
14/11/2023 - Jaap van Heusden’s latest feature is a gripping psychological drama about a priest seeking the truth behind a mysterious Crying Madonna
One of the features celebrating its international premiere in competition at this year’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival is Jaap van Heusden’s The Man from Rome [+see also: interview: Jaap van Heusden and Rogier…film profile]
The picture opens on an intriguing premise: we follow Father Filippo (Michele Riondino)
a troubled man who lives with great passion and turmoil his inner conflict between faith and science
he is tasked to find out lies and schemes behind many alleged miracles
we see the man travelling to a small village in Limburg
where four years before a tragic school shooting left a trail of blood and an apparently irreversible sense of doom and hopelessness among the villagers
Things seem to change for the better when the statue of a Madonna
belonging to a woman and her daughter Térèse (a young girl who survived the attack but became mute as a result
begins crying and returns faith to the community
Riondino nails his portrayal of a forty-something priest who
like a modern-day crusader and a sceptical Saint Thomas
seeks the truth and is aware of the sacred mission he needs to accomplish
whose voice is at times slightly “chanted.” It’s an interesting trait
and makes him quite credible despite his unusual good looks for a young clergyman
the cryptic character played by Emma Bading ends up being a powerful presence
crucial to the development of the story and able to keep the viewers hooked
the script (penned by the helmer in tandem with Rogier de Blok) boasts a good balance between the urge to advance the plot at an adequately fast pace and the need to leave some things unsaid
with the sombre score courtesy of Minco Eggersman and the cinematography by Melle Van Essen standouts
The flashback scenes depicting the tragic day of the mass murder are exceptionally well crafted
enriched by an effective use of slow motion and a very light colour palette
The closing of the narrative arc is ambiguous yet surprising
The Man from Rome is an intense journey about faith
Even though these themes have been thoroughly explored in the past and are not dazzling with originality
in Jaap van Heusden’s fourth feature they are treated in a fresh
meticulous fashion through the unique lens of a small Dutch village
The Man from Rome is produced by IJSwater Films (Netherlands), and co-produced by Fiction Park (Germany) and Evangelische Omroep (the Netherlands). Gusto Entertainment is in charge of the film’s Dutch distribution

Mathieu van der Poel pulls his foot out of the pedal in final sprint
World Champion Tom Pidcock finishes fourth
The pair of cyclo-cross Galácticos eased clear from a group of frontrunners on the very first lap of the nine-lap race
They then proceeded to duke it out for the remaining eight laps
one accelerating on one section before the other hit back later in the lap
Van der Poel had tried a final last ditch attempt to distance the Belgian champion in a fast but rutted section in the second half of the course but van Aert clung to within a few bike lengths
When the Dutchman slipped out on a corner and had to dismount it appeared his chances were scuppered but he remounted dug deep and the pair came into the tarmacked finishing straight together.
The drama was not over though as they sprinted van der Poel’s foot came out of his pedal to and van Aert cruised to victory
Behind them World Champion Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) came home in fourth place.
He had been shuffled back in the pack at the start and had eventually mounted an effort to bridge to the leading pair but at the start of the eighth lap Pidcock had been caught by chasers Lars van der Haar (Baloise Trek Lions), the Dutch champion, and Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen - Bingoal).
Pidcock and van der Haar distanced their rival Belgian and van der Haar beat Pidcock in the final sprint. It was enough for Dutchman van der Haar to take the top spot of the Superprestige series standings as his nearest challenger Laurens Sweeck (Crelan-Fristads) finished down in eighth.
In the women’s race it was Ceylin Del Carmen Alvardo (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who accelerated away from Inge van der Heijden and Lucinda Brand on the fast but technical terrain.
The Dutchwoman moved clear of her countrywomen when she used her punchy acceleration on a uphill section.
After the race Alvardo had said shed struggled to get to the head of the field in the first couple of laps before hitting her stride.
She added: “I think I was the strongest rider in the race, I had more power on the climbs and I could use that to get rid of Van der Heijden. And on the second try, it worked.”
In winning she moved herself within three points of Superprestige series leader Denise Betsema, who came in fifth on the day.

Tension remains high between members of the Turkish community and Kurds in the Limburg municipality of Heusden-Zolder. On Monday evening a German-registered car was brought to a halt and its driver dragged out of the vehicle and assaulted by several people. The police reacted swiftly and were able to prevent the situation from escalating further.
The daily ‘Het Belang van Limburg’ reports that the incident happened on the Koolmijnlaan in Heusden-Zolder. Images of the incident (see video above) have been published on social media. They show the driver of a German-registered vehicle provoking passers-by by giving a hand signal that is associated with the Kurdish armed separatist group PKK. The driver of the vehicle was also driving in the wrong direction along a cycle lane.
The car was eventually brought to a halt. The police say that the driver of the vehicle was then dragged out of his car and then physically assault by a large group of people.
A crowd gathered quickly at the scene of the incident. However, the police response was also swift and a further escalation was averted.
The Mayor of Heusden-Zolder Mario Borremans (local list) told VRT News that the driver of the car has been detained. "He is in custody and will be prosecuted for inciting hatred”.

As noted first by GCN
the Jumbo-Visma athlete decided to swap his Cervélo R5-CX for the Aspero
Although the two bikes are similar–there are some notable differences between the machines
Review: Cervélo Áspero-5
The R5-CX has narrow seat stays that come together at the seat tube and top tube
whereas the Aspero has much wider stays that attach lower on the seat tube
The Aspero also has a thicker fork and can take tires of up to 40mm
that is moot for ‘cross racing since the UCI max is 33 mm

Conor Murphy (Caldwell Cycles) and Cameron Henry (Inspired Cycling) suffered multiple set-backs during their Telenet Superprestige debut in Heusden-Zolder

as was his fellow international rider Henry
And that meant both were really up against it from the start
The size of their challenge was increased when they got caught behind a pile-up immediately after the start
Murphy suffered a repeated problem with his chain
coupled with trying to find their legs after their journey over to Belgium
meant Murphy and Henry did well to finish on the same lap as race winner
while Henry was 83rd at 7:32; both gaining invaluable experience on a racing trip organised and financially assisted by Cycling Ulster
Harvey was in action a day after taking on the UCI World Cup race in Gavere
where he placed 52nd in an event won by world champion Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck)

The TimesThe port in HeusdenALAMYMaggie O’FarrellSaturday March 23 2019
The TimesWe are in the middle of breakfast when Red Riding Hood turns up
then she looks across the room to where a knight in full armour is engaging a table of children in a sword display
Efteling theme parkYou won’t find any kitsch
refreshingly loyal to its traditional storytelling roots
This isn’t to say that there isn’t a commercial side: there is and
Much more my pace — and that of my six-year-old — is the little steam train that circles the perimeter of the park
“in the Fifties they started making the fairytale scenes.”
There were several of his pictures on the walls of my nursery school and I had a copy of Arabian Nights that was illustrated by him
A ride at EftelingALAMYSo I have come to walk through his Sprookjesbos with my children (except the eldest
with dancing mice and leaping chisels; a donkey that excretes silver coins at the press of a button
so children can walk through Sleeping Beauty’s somnolent palace and gaze up at a sugary but lethal gingerbread house that just might swallow them up
What baffles me most about Efteling is that I heard only one other British accent there
It is a question that returns again and again as we venture farther into Brabant
southernmost region of the Netherlands and the birthplace of Hieronymus Bosch and Vincent van Gogh
A day or so later we are in the middle of Heusden
On a map the town looks like a cartographer’s doodle
trying in vain to keep out conquering armies
all the while encountering barely another tourist
It’s hard to imagine a more perfect place than Brabant for a family holiday
Children are not natural flâneurs and in the face of a city amble tend to stage early mutinies
My husband and I get our fix of urban wanderings
plumblines of light reaching into the dark
Need to knowMaggie O’Farrell was a guest of Efteling (efteling.com) and of the Noord-Brabant region (visitbrabant.com)
How to get there DFDS (dfds.co.uk) charges from £40pp each way
based on a car and four people travelling together from Newcastle to Amsterdam
Where to stayA two-night stay in a six-person holiday house in Efteling Holiday Village Bosrijk costs from €690 (£590)
