New York City FC today announce that it has loaned forward Jovan Mijatovic to Oud-Heverlee (OH) Leuven of the Belgian Pro League through June 30, 2025.
The Serbian forward arrived ahead of the 2024 season and made 17 appearances and scored a goal across all competitions for New York City. The forward played a role in the club’s Leagues Cup quarterfinal run where he contributed with his first goal with the club and scored in the shootout against Mexican side F.C. Queretaro at Yankee Stadium.
“We know Jovan is a super talented player with vast European experience, we are all disappointed with his lack of playing time but know the level he is capable of reaching,” said Sporting Director David Lee. “At this moment we believe that allowing Jovan to be exposed to play a key part in a competitive environment in Belgium’s top division will help further his development. We look forward to following Jovan in Belgium the rest of the season and wish him all the best.”
Mijatovic returns to Europe where prior to New York City the forward had amassed 95 professional career appearances most recently with Serbian club Red Star Belgrade, in addition to UEFA Champions League and Europa League experience.
“I would like to thank everyone at New York City for welcoming me to the club last season. Although we didn’t have the season I would have wanted, I am excited at the opportunity to return to Europe and continue to work on my craft,” said forward Jovan Mijatović. “I would like to thank the coaches, staff and my teammates; I wish them all the best as they start the new season.”
On the international stage, Mijatović was called up by Serbia’s U-21 while with New York City. The forward made four appearances and provided a goal and assist between a friendly and UEFA Euro U-21 Championship qualifying.
Transaction: New York City FC loan forward Jovan Mijatovic to OH Leuven through June 30, 2025.

Appreciation of this premium Belgian Lager may seem all too easy but
there’s an art to serving up Heverlee’s celebrated ‘perfected pint’ … and appreciation is deepened when you find out what lies behind this great heritage-based beer
much to the admiration of bartenders and licensed trade representatives from across Northern Ireland
was Heverlee’s own master brewer Joris Brams. There is no man better qualified to present Heverlee
Heverlee is derived from a centuries-old recipe originally used by medieval monks at the Abbey of the order of Premontre
just outside Joris’s hometown of Leuven
providing refreshment almost exclusively destined for the monks and those who laboured on the Abbey lands. Brewing stopped around 1500/1600 and the recipe was long forgotten until Joris began his research
He was so impressed at the recipe he unearthed for a traditional yet hugely distinctive Belgian Pils
that he revived both the recipe and skills
the ultra-smooth Heverlee of today was born
more traditional brewing process than the bigger Belgian brands to ensure a distinctive original Pils bitterness within its complex taste characteristics
Today Heverlee can proudly claim that it is once again deliciously brewed with ingredients and methods with roots dating back to Medieval times
maize and fresh water combine to create a light
Heverlee is served in a chalice glass designed to preserve the beer head and concentrate its flavours
the foam is traditionally sliced off with a knife
perhaps worryingly known as ‘beheading’
protecting the liquid underneath from exposure to the air and maintaining the head’s bitter aromas
But there’s even more to pouring what Heverlee has dubbed its ‘perfected pour’ and Joris has created a six step programme to guide bartenders through the exacting process. Delivering perfection with every pour ensures that the customer always receives the beer as it should be
but it also reminds the bartender that this is a product like no other: worthy of respectful handling
The Heverlee logo features the Abbey’s Latin motto ‘Ne Quid Nimis’
reflecting a philosophy of ‘life in balance’ The literal English translation of the Latin phrase is ‘nothing in excess’ … which is perhaps good advice when you discover a Beer as exceptional and great-tasting as Heverlee

many fans indicated that they associated OH Leuven with the Stella Artois beer
This is because AB InBev brand Stella has been brewed in Leuven all the way back to 1366
and in the past 600 years has become closely associated with the town
and the brewery is a popular tourist destination
As a result of the association with Stella
the third kit has included a yellow lager style design
which was designed with both the supporters input and the “help of AI” according to OH Leuven
The new kit includes a gold shirt and white collar
and has been showcased during the last game against KV Mechelen

was in Glasgow last week to create two murals at Finnieston’s Chelsea Market and the brand new Phillies of Shawlands
DZIA was brought over by premium Belgian lager brand
in celebration of its limited edition pint glass by the artist
DZIA’s impressive 3.6 x 4.3m mural of two Glaswegian seagulls has been outside Chelsea Market since Thursday 22 February
and will soon be taking up a permanent spot inside a secret
The striking design is a symbol of character and strength
as well as being the official symbol of Flanders
the area of Belgium which is home to Heverlee beer
The surrealist glassware design by Joachim is inspired by the goings on in a bar
and depicts characters enjoying a beer and sparking romance
DZIA’s artwork has appeared at several events with Heverlee including; 2015’s Heverlee at Tontine
the 2016 Riverside Festival and West End Fiesta at Kelvingrove Bandstand
Both of the limited edition pint glasses from Joachim and DZIA are available in selected Heverlee bars now
said: “Eye catching glass designs are a staple of Belgian beer bars
so we’re thrilled to have brought a flavour of this to the UK
you very quickly realise that the country is home to some of the finest street artists in the world
and what better way to celebrate Heverlee’s roots by bringing over one of the country’s top artists
to create incredible murals at Chelsea Market and Phillies of Shawlands
We look forward to seeing drinkers enjoy a pint of Heverlee in one of the DZIA and Joachim designed glasses soon.”

While also the official symbol of Flanders, the area of Belgium from which Heverlee hails, the striking lion design emblazoned on the limited edition chalice glass is meant to symbolise strength and character.
The design is consistent with the style for which DZIA is renowned – the Belgian street artist has earned a reputation for his unique depictions of animals including abstract and intricately detailed murals of foxes, cats, insects, squirrels, eagles, rhinos and horses. He has also been commissioned by brands such as Eastpak and Converse in the past.
Heverlee is the fastest growing world lager in the Scottish on-trade. The new, limited-edition chalice glass, which has been redesigned for the first time since Heverlee launched in 2013, has been introduced to support publicans stocking the Belgian lager through increased and refreshed brand visibility.
Heverlee brand manager Rhona Fyfe said: “In Belgian bars, there are eye-catching glass designs from dozens of brewers and we’re thrilled to be introducing our very own limited-edition pint glass to the UK.
“DZIA’s Belgian lion looks incredible, we’re sure our customers and Heverlee drinkers will agree. Street art has long been part of Heverlee’s identity through our experiential campaigns, so to bring it direct to our customers is something we’re really excited about.”
In Belgium, limited-edition glassware is regularly used to deliver brand standout – something Heverlee is looking to replicate in the Scottish market by offering DZIA collaboration glassware to new and selected existing on-trade customers.
DZIA is a long-standing partner of Heverlee, having painted live at 2015’s Heverlee at Tontine Lane and 2016’s Riverside Festival.

Who the heck is Oud-Heverlee Leuven? Forge FC fans would be forgiven for asking such a question on Wednesday when Tristan Borges was transferred to the Belgian club – the first Canadian Premier League player sold to a European side
Canadian soccer supporters could also be forgiven to think Borges would be joining the Canadian attackers plying their trade rather effectively in Belgium at the moment: Cyle Larin with Zulte Waregem and Jonathan David with Gent
OH Leuven is competing in Belgium’s second tier

OH Leuven has connections to the English Premier League
The club was purchased in 2016 by King Power
OH Leuven has already acted on this connection with Leicester; Englishman George Hirst headed north across the English channel this season and 20-year-old Ghanian midfielder Kamal Sowah has been loaned the other way

Could Borges benefit from them somewhere down the road

Heverlee has launched a limited edition white beer in Scotland for the summer months
which successfully launched its authentic Belgian lager in Scotland in October 2013
says the limited edition beer is inspired by the rare flower
Heverlee Witte is the first seasonal beer to emerge from Heverlee
and is a 4.8% ABV wheat beer brewed with orange peel
reminiscent of beers traditionally enjoyed in summertime in Belgium
Brewed using a mix of malted and unmalted wheat for a smooth
Heverlee Witte is medium bodied and slightly fruity in flavour
with top notes of citrus orange and hints of cloves and other aromatic spices
used descriptions of a historic lager brewed by pioneer monks at the Abbey of the Order of Premontre to recreate the original Heverlee
after learning it was a pilsner-style beer
and fresher tasting than other Abbey beers of its time
Joris worked with the monks once more to uncover a variant of the Vogelmelk flower
which would inspire the seasonal beer’s creation
“This beer is testament to the longstanding creativity in Belgian brewing,” said Joris
“Belgian brewers have always experimented with interesting or unexpected ingredients to introduce limited summer varieties
I knew I had to find something special if I were to produce such a beer for Heverlee
and the Vogelmelk flower from the Abbey grounds is the perfect tribute to our home.”
“The reaction to our original beer has been fantastic in Scotland
and we know there’s an appetite for more authentic Belgian brews
so we look forward to introducing a taste of summer in Belgium with Heverlee Witte.”
Heverlee Witte is now available in selected bars across Scotland
Canadian Premier League star midfielder Tristan Borges has been sold to Belgian side Oud-Heverlee Leuven in a landmark deal estimated to be worth between $300,000 to $500,000
The 21-year-old Forge FC midfielder made waves as a top performer in the Canadian Premier League’s inaugural season, finishing his title-winning campaign as the league’s golden boot winner before also taking home the awards for the Best U-21 Canadian Player and the league MVP honours
Having spent his youth career with the likes of Toronto FC Academy and Dutch side SC Heerenveen – where he played alongside the likes of Real Madrid’s Martin Odegaard – his 2019 season with Forge FC was ultimately the first time he was able to show his worth on the pitch as a starter in a professional environment
His impressive league form – which also included a chance to shine in both the Canadian Championship and the CONCACAF League – eventually led to a call-up with the Canadian national team, with Borges recently making his debut against Barbados
Borges becomes the second Canadian Premier League export to make waves in just as many weeks, with versatile Cavalry FC defender Joel Waterman recently signing on with Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact
The CPL is an opportunity for players to showcase their skills in front of passionate supporters
fans and other clubs and has provided Tristan with an opportunity to showcase his talent globally
We are excited about how this transfer showcases our commitment to players from coast to coast
It’ll be interesting to see how Borges fares at Oud-Heverlee Leuven
The club is currently making a push for promotion into the top flight after having dropped down to the second division a few years ago
Whether Borges can help the club finally push itself back across the finish line remains to be seen
but it’ll sure be interesting to watch
While it is not ultimately clear how much money Forge FC will make from the transfer
it appears the incoming funds could potentially cover half of the club’s 2020 season salary budget alone
Borges’ new side is backed by Power International Group
which also owns one-time Premier League winners Leicester City
the Belgian side certainly has the backing to make a push for the top flight by signing players like the Canadian top flight’s most valuable player
The terms of Tristan’s contract with Oud-Heverlee Leuven have not been publicly disclosed

Heverlee is to launch an innovative marketing campaign with social media
experiential and sampling activity at the core
The authentic Belgian pint will work to increase their presence amongst beer-lovers in Scotland
the first international market to sell Heverlee
Now select bars in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are also stocking the brand
The activity will highlight the brand’s distinctive style and provenance
showcasing the fact it is only ever brewed in Belgium using traditional methods and ingredients
Joris Brams was instrumental in exporting the lager from Belgium to Scotland and is passionate about the brand
“Beer is such an important part of our culture and we’ve over 800 varieties
It’s a country I’ve got a great deal of affection for and have spent much of my brewing career in
which is why we decided to introduce it there first
It’s received a great reaction so far and it’s been selling well
so we’re excited about what lies ahead for Heverlee.”
The company’s new marketing approach has been designed to create talking points and over the next few weeks
a series of pop-up Heverlee events will take place throughout Glasgow and Edinburgh
The brand will also connect with bar teams to illustrate its serve ice-cold in a beautiful branded glass then ‘beheaded’
the head of the pint stays bitter and the beer beneath remains smooth and fresh
The company’s new website launches on October 19 and they can be followed on Twitter: @heverleebeer
