the exhibition is Austria’s largest-ever showcase of Rembrandt’s major works
Published: Oct 15, 2024written by Emily Snow
An exhibition in Vienna is shedding new light on an old favorite
Rembrandt – Hoogstraten: Color and Illusion creates a fascinating conversation between the famed Dutch Golden Age master and one of his most successful and innovative students
the painter and art theorist Samuel van Hoogstraten
Rembrandt van Rijn was one of the most influential and important painters in 17th-century Amsterdam
In addition to taking on prestigious portrait commissions that revolutionized the genre
Rembrandt ran a successful workshop in the city
He trained aspiring Dutch artists and oversaw the production of works that continued his distinctive creative legacy
a new exhibition offers the unique chance to explore the relationship between Rembrandt and one of his lesser-known but most promising pupils
Rembrandt – Hoogstraten: Color and Illusion opened to the public last week at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and runs through January 12
It is being billed as Austria’s largest showing of major Rembrandt works
each of which helps paint a fascinating picture of the creative dialogue between teacher and pupil
The Vienna exhibition focuses on two of the most important themes in the work of Rembrandt and Hoogstraten: color and illusion. Both during and long after his lifetime, Rembrandt was famous for his technical innovations, particularly his use of chiaroscuro to achieve evocative lighting effects and rich tonal contrasts
Students in his workshop likewise mastered the distinctive coloration and painterly effect of Rembrandt’s paintings
Rembrandt taught his pupils how to render subjects with convincingly realistic perspective and detail
Samuel van Hoogstraten became particularly fascinated by—and unusually adept at—the art of illusionistic deception
Such artworks typically attempt to fool the viewer by blurring the boundary between real and painted space
Hoogstraten took Rembrandt’s interest in illusion a few steps further
experimenting with perspective and making a name for himself as a painter of architecture
the Vienna exhibition features new interactive spaces and projections designed to accompany the artists’ 17th-century conceptions of virtual reality
After distinguishing himself as a follower of Rembrandt
Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678) struck out on his own
painting portraits and mentoring his own students
where he gained the prestigious patronage of members of the Habsburg court
Hoogstraten further differentiated himself from his master by creating perspective boxes
and the camera obscure to create an illusory three-dimensional view of an interior space
For Rembrandt – Hoogstraten: Color and Illusion
the Kunsthistorisches Museum constructed a replica of a surviving perspective box that was actually constructed and used by Hoogstraten

Nestled in the heart of the Sussex countryside
unfinished mansion stands as a haunting reminder of grand ambitions left unfulfilled
Originally envisioned as a palatial estate surpassing even Buckingham Palace in scale
Hamilton Palace has instead become a decaying relic
Construction on the sprawling estate began in 1985
commissioned by controversial businessman Nicholas Van Hoogstraten
Van Hoogstraten amassed a vast fortune and was known for his sharp business tactics and unapologetic persona
though more recent reports suggest his family's assets have dwindled to around £25 million
Despite its immense size and elaborate design
the unfinished structure has sat in disrepair
drawing criticism from local residents who view it as an eyesore
In response to concerns over the crumbling estate
Van Hoogstraten reportedly dismissed critics as "peasants," showing little interest in restoring or completing the project
the businessman resides primarily in Zimbabwe
leaving Hamilton Palace to remain a ghostly

which is so overwhelming that it cannot be defined
a gaze that pierces us in his many self-portraits
a warm presence that accompanies us on our hazardous paths through life and teaches us to love
a prestigious collection of books on the Italian Renaissance was entitled Le Temps des Génies
I’m tempted to use this title to evoke the artistic effervescence that animated Holland
and the genius is without a doubt Rembrandt
The exhibition at Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum
Already in terms of the number of works on display
It’s a definite and intelligent pleasure to see two artists in parallel
She fought against both the Soviets and Communists
who were murdering Poland’s intellectual elite
She managed to leave Poland as a stateless person and
donated her priceless art collection gathered by her family over the years to the Royal Castle Museum in Warsaw
Let’s take a closer look at this Girl with the frame
observing the frontal positioning of the figure and the slightly oblique angle
a verticality befitting the character of this gentle-looking girl
long auburn hair falling in braids over her bust
wearing a vast black beret that crowns her head
and carrying on her belt an oriental dagger in its shiny sheath of chased metal
Could she be a huntress ready to leap out of the frame of this painting that holds her back
contrasting with the girl’s calm immobility
where Rembrandt takes a story from the Bible (The Book of Tobit (5/7)) and turns it into a human event
the encounter between an elderly man and a young girl given to him as a wife by her father according to the Scriptures
barely concealed by a nightgown that gives a glimpse – or rather
her left hand holding back a red curtain that conceals the alcove
unintentionally creating a certain theatricality that the Caravaggio influenced painters would seize upon
This same curtain can be seen in The Holy Family (1646) at the Gemäldegalery in Kassel
This painting is quintessentially Rembrandt
It’s no longer the Bible we’re talking about
and the religious references disappear to make way for the emotion of flesh and life
of the gaze and the timeless complicity between the figure painted by Rembrandt (all the more so for his self-portraits) and the viewer
that shivers or armors and serves as a screen for our ardor
“Love is an impulse of the soul which in its essence detaches itself towards God in order to unite with His very high light”
said a medieval Jewish Aristotelian scholar and philosopher
We are standing at the heart of this mosaic spirituality that runs through Jewish and Christian teaching
as he was friends with many of Amsterdam’s Jewish families because he was received into their midst
this particle of humanity and eternity that creates transcendence
and let’s not go any further for the moment into the unfolding of this magical exhibition
for we have already reached the very essence of Rembrandt’s eternity and uniqueness
and one of the best and most well-documented
and everyone will have their own interpretation
The Kunsthistorisches Museum’s exhibition is awe-inspiring
and we’re still a long way from having seen it all
a delicious tribute between passionate lovers
a representation influenced by the “antique”
all the more so since the time of success and luxury
of abundance and lavish spending on porcelain
jewels and carpets from the Orient was behind him after the scandal of the Night watch
clients and sponsors had all abandoned him
that he found models to depict the characters in his paintings in scenes from the Old Testament
it was reduced to his son Titus and his benevolent servant
who also became his servant-mistress and mother of Cordelia
such was the difficult end of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn ‘s life
The figure of Anna the prophetess appears in the Gospels of Luke
Not only Hoogstraten one of Rembrandt’s pupils, he also began working in his studio at the age of 15. He also wrote a treatise on painting that helped establish his reputation, Inleyding known in French as Introduction à l’Académie supérieure de l’art de la peinture : ou Le monde visible. 2
he assimilated his master’s lessons on both color and perspective
he learned in particular the ability to create a “houding” a Dutch word difficult to translate and found in the manuals of the time
but which corresponds somewhat to an illusionist rendering in a shallow spatial depth
his work showed a capacity for flexibility that enabled him to move from one style to another
with what can only be described as a certain sense of humor; he was far removed from any ideological or even scholastic constraints on what was or wasn’t appropriate to paint or draw
The competition between master and apprentice is evidenced by the masterly execution of the illusion in related works in terms of composition and technique from the period when both artists were active in Amsterdam
Aside from his still lifes and trompe l’oeil
Hoogstraten took great pleasure in rendering perspective
It’s important to note that the concept of aemulatio
to rub shoulders with his pupils over a subject or a way of painting
Rembrandt’s sublime St John the Baptist Preaching in the Desert
now in the collections of the Gemäldegalerie der Staatlichen Museen In Berlin
whose original model appears to be a lost painting by Pieter Lastman (1583-1633)
is a good example of this community of painters
and shows the Baptist addressing the multitude who come to him to be baptized
Samuel van Hoogstraten was one of those great European artists who traveled from north to south and from court to court
who produced his work without ever leaving the kingdom
He stayed at court in Prague just after the end of the Thirty Years’ War
He even crossed the Channel and witnessed the Great Fire that ravaged London for a week in September 1666

approximately 65-70 million m³ of peat and other substrates are used in horticultural production
Peat and coconut fiber are widely used due to their clean and homogeneous properties
A Belgium trial is now started to make the substrates available for another season
"The reason substrates like peat and coconut fiber have become so popular is that they are clean
"The problem is that after just one season
it can no longer be guaranteed to be clean
producers cannot risk reusing the substrate
as this could lead to poor yields risk growers cannot afford to take
that has been steaming soil for many years
has expanded its machinery to develop tools to steam substrate
10 m³ of used substrate was steam-treated with their newly developed SoilSaver 5 machine
In collaboration with the research department of one of Europe's most renowned strawberry regions
SoilSteam has now conducted tests to enable the reuse of substrates
Proefcentrum Hoogstraten and SoilSteam have collaborated to steam-treat 10 m³ of substrate that has already been used in strawberry production
researchers at Hoogstraten will attempt to grow new strawberries in the heat-treated substrate and compare the results with strawberries grown in treated
Strawberry researcher at Proefcentrum Hoogstraten
is very optimistic: "We have a strong focus on sustainability in our production
much of strawberry production takes place in substrates that are not reused due to disease presence"
strawberry researcher at Proefcentrum Hoogstraten
there are environmental issues related to the extraction of peat-based substrates
and therefore heat treatment and reuse may be key to more sustainable production."
Promising tests with SoilSaver 5"External research shows that steaming of peat with laboratory equipment might give good results - something we now aim to verify using a full-scale machine"
adding it is exciting to gain more experience with this type of substrate
this could open up entirely new opportunities for sustainable substrate reuse."
The operation itself went according to plan
"We are fortunate to work with such a dedicated team at Proefcentrum Hoogstraten
we will obtain solid documentation on whether steam-treated substrate performs as well as new substrate."
was carried out using the brand-new SoilSaver 5 machine from SoilSteam
which means the process is entirely CO₂-free
"This makes the technology a sustainable alternative that not only reduces the environmental impact associated with substrate production but also the reuse process itself"
SoilSteam is ready to start serial production of the machine if the results are good

Coöperatie Hoogstraten traditionally kicked off the new strawberry season with the sale of the first crate of Hoogstraten strawberries
the cooperative took a slightly bigger approach
Studio Brussels radio DJs Fien and Thibault broadcast their morning show
The first crate was purchased by Colruyt for €500 per 500g
which was doubled to €8,000 by Coöperatie Hoogstraten
This year's proceeds were donated to Foodsavers
an organisation that redistributes surplus food to people in need
It was a festive opening to the new season
which is also looked forward to with great confidence
"Last week we already began receiving more volume from different crops and were able to really get started
so sales followed naturally," the chief fruit manager explains
as both the exposed and unlit crops—still heated—come into production
The sunlight we've had has also helped push volumes forward for the coming weeks."
Director Hans Vanderhallen's opening speech took place in the presence of the Strawberry Gheselles
The outlook this year is much brighter than last year
so we're seeing more potential in the plants compared to last year
we expect to achieve more kilos and good quality as a result." Strawberries have also been eagerly awaited by the market
"The advantage of strawberries is that both supply and demand are stimulated by good weather
we saw that demand and prices were immediately strong
but they are decent enough for trade to get going
Now the challenge is to keep them that way."
we'll really be into full volumes," he continued
Premium strawberries at Colruyt now exclusively from Coöperatie Hoogstraten The level of confidence was enough reason for Coöperatie Hoogstraten to make it a celebratory day
and Colruyt's purchase of the first crate was a great moment for the Belgian retailer to announce a first
the premium strawberries sold at Colruyt Lowest Prices will come exclusively from Coöperatie Hoogstraten
the two companies are entering a strong local partnership
head of fruit and vegetable purchasing at Colruyt Lowest Prices
we aim to offer as many local products as possible in our stores
By working exclusively with Hoogstraten for our premium strawberries
their local craftsmanship becomes available to a wide group of Colruyt customers at the lowest price."
Jan Engelen and Hans Vanderhallen with Nabilla Ait Daoud in the middle
FoodsaversFoodsavers was the beneficiary of the first sale proceeds
Foodsavers Antwerp collects surplus food daily from supermarkets
These surpluses are sorted and distributed to about 30 food aid organisations and social grocery stores
we rescue over a million kilos of food every year and distribute it to 15,000 Antwerp residents weekly through partner organisations
Every saved food product is a win for people
for our employees who are distanced from the labour market
and harvesting together—for an Antwerp where no food is wasted and no one goes hungry," said Nabilla Ait Daoud
alderman for Social Economy in the city of Antwerp
Fien and Thibault's studio was set up in the canteen of Coöperatie Hoogstraten
The entire morning was accompanied by Fien and Thibault from Studio Brussels
they witnessed a special moment: Thibault was knighted as a Ghesel van de Aardbei
This honorary title has previously been awarded to notable figures such as Johan Museeuw
Well-known Belgian Thibault Christiaensen was knighted Ghesel of the Strawberry
Pepper growers needed to meet demandBesides the festive atmosphere
the season opening is also traditionally the time when Coöperatie Hoogstraten looks both back and ahead
Strong prices for tomatoes and strawberries boosted sales to €362 million in 2024
"A significant increase compared to previous years," said the cooperative's Jan Engelen
we added just under 30 hectares in Morocco because our customers also want tomatoes during the winter
lighted cultivation here in the region is no longer always profitable during the winter months."
The UV robot at grower Luc Krijnen's premises
but it's worth noting that growers plant them several times a year
We also have around 90 hectares of peppers planned for 2025
with Dutch production accounting for two-thirds of the total and the Belgian portion making up one-third
and we could easily grow to around 140 hectares to meet demand
That's why we're actively promoting and recruiting new growers for this."
Grower Luc Krijnen showcased his Gestelberries farm
in collaboration with Proefcentrum Hoogstraten
we've won the bid to host the 11th International Strawberry Symposium of the International Society for Horticultural Science in 2028."
The day concluded with a tour of Gestelberries
where manager Luc Krijnen gave visitors a look around his farm
Luc is one of eight strawberry growers at Coöperatie Hoogstraten using lighting in cultivation

Proefcentrum Hoogstraten in Meerle has a new greenhouse
After a turbulent construction period that included a lot of precipitation
they are now ready to plant the first crops in the new greenhouses
according to an update from company manager Roel Vanderbruggen
The new greenhouse will be used for research into energy use
The main crops are tomatoes and strawberries
the first strawberries were still expected to be planted in mid-August

Fourteen to 26 percent of all hospitalized cases of acute kidney injury are explained by drug-induced toxicity
emphasizing the importance of proper strategies to pre-clinically assess renal toxicity
The MTT assay is widely used as a measure of cell viability
but largely depends on cellular metabolic activity
MTT as a single assay may not be the best way to assess cytotoxicity of compounds that reduce mitochondrial function and cellular metabolic activity without directly affecting cell viability
we aim to highlight the limitations of MTT alone in assessing renal toxicity of compounds that interfere with metabolic activity
we compared toxic effects observed by MTT with a fluorescent assay that determines compromised plasma membrane permeability
Exposure of proximal tubule epithelial cells to nephrotoxic compounds reduced cellular metabolic activity concentration- and time-dependently
We show that compared to our fluorescence-based approach
assessment of cellular metabolic activity by means of MTT provides a composite readout of cell death and metabolic impairment
An approach independent of cellular metabolism is thus preferable when assessing cytotoxicity of compounds that induce metabolic dysfunction
combining both assays during drug development enables a first discrimination between compounds having a direct or indirect mitochondrial toxic potential
Toxic (metabolic) insults interfere with cellular metabolic activity and eventually result in cell death
cellular metabolism could be only mildly reduced leading to the induction of apoptosis
cellular viability might be restored via metabolic rewiring (i.e.
the capacity of cells to switch to alternative metabolic pathways upon changing conditions
including nutrient availability or drug exposure)
when a toxic insult severely inhibits metabolic function it triggers necrosis
which results in loss of membrane integrity and ultimately cell death
As MTT measures cellular metabolic activity
this method will also detect changes in case of a mild toxic insult
which may eventually not affect cell viability (blue)
a fluorescent-based cell death detection approach based on membrane permeability will only be relevant if apoptotic or necrotic mechanisms have been activated (red)
(B) Fluorescent-based analysis of cell death combines hoechst (blue) to visualize all cells with Yo-Pro-1-iodide (green) that crosses plasma membranes of (early) apoptotic cells in particular and propidium iodide (red) that stains necrotic cells
detected as Yo-Pro-1-iodide and propidium iodide positive cells
is induced by a high concentration of a nephrotoxic drug (cisplatin
100 μM) compared to a vehicle control
Exposing renal proximal tubule cells to a selection of prototypic nephrotoxic drugs in a concentration- and time-dependent manner
compared to the fluorescence-based approach
assessment of cellular metabolic activity by means of MTT does not exclusively assess cellular toxicity
MTT rather provides a composite readout of cell death and decreased cellular metabolic rate
Cisplatin and chloroacetaldehyde solution were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (Zwijndrecht
Sanguinarine (chloride) was from Cayman Chemical (Ann Arbor
United States) and tenofovir was obtained from Santa Cruz Biotechnologies
which were normalized to unexposed ciPTEC-OAT1
TABLE 1. Overview of prototypic nephrotoxicants with calculated IC70- and IC90-concentrations. IC70- and IC90-concentrations are defined as inhibitory concentrations that result in 70% and 90% of the maximal inhibitory effect on cellular metabolic activity, respectively. IC70 and IC90 concentrations were based on and calculated using IC50-values of mean cellular metabolic activity concentration-response curve fittings (Figure 1)
95% confidence bands were plotted in curve fitting graphs and used to calculate confidence intervals (CI) for IC70 and IC90-concentrations
To evaluate compound-induced effects on cellular metabolic activity in ciPTEC-OAT1, a colorimetric assay based on tetrazolium salt MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide), was performed (Mosmann, 1983)
ciPTEC-OAT1 were cultured and exposed as described above in transparent/clear flat bottom 96-wells plates (Corning
Netherlands) and compound-exposed ciPTEC-OAT1 were washed three times with serum-free PTEC complete medium
followed by incubation with 0.5 mg/ml MTT in serum-free PTEC medium for 3 h at 37°C and 5% (v/v) CO2
Formed formazan crystals were dissolved in DMSO (Merck
Absorption was measured at 560 nm and subtracted from background at 670 nm using Benchmark (Bio-Rad
Values were normalized to unexposed ciPTEC-OAT1 control
Curve-fitting and statistical data analysis were performed using GraphPad prism v5.03 (GraphPad Software Inc.
Data were normalized to untreated (vehicle) control ciPTEC-OAT1
A response was considered cytotoxic when a significant reduction in cell viability was observed
Results were plotted after background subtraction using nonlinear regression with four parameters and variable slope
constraining the bottom to greater than 0.0 to prevent a lower limit representing negative cell viability on log-transformed x-values
Statistical significance of concentration- and time-dependent data was determined by one-way ANOVA
followed by Dunnett’s post hoc analysis to correct for multiple comparison
Differences between assay types (passay) were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA and corrected for multiple comparison by Bonferroni’s post hoc analysis
All data is presented as mean ± standard error of mean (SEM) of at least three independent experiments (n = 3)
performed with five or six experimental replicates
These observations imply that previously described toxic effects determined using the MTT assay of at least cisplatin
could have been influenced by compound interference with the metabolizing capacity of the cell
it emphasizes the essential difference in readout between both assays described and warrants careful interpretation of results
Comparison of MTT and fluorescence-based cell death methods to assess concentration-dependent reduction of ciPTEC cellular viability
Cellular metabolic activity (□) and fluorescence-based cell death (•) were determined in ciPTEC-OAT1 after 24 h incubation with a serial √10-dilution of nephrotoxic compounds (A) cisplatin
(C) sanguinarine chloride and (D) chloroacetaldehyde
All results were normalized to unexposed controls
Statistical analyses: one-way ANOVA corrected for multiple comparison by Dunnett’s post hoc analysis to compare differences between vehicle control and exposed conditions *p < 0.05
***p < 0.001; and two-way ANOVA corrected for multiple comparison by Bonferroni’s post hoc analysis to compare differences between assays #p < 0.05
###p < 0.001
p-value corresponding to overall significance between assays is indicated for each compound
Mean ± SEM; n = 3 independent experiments
cellular metabolic activity was reduced to a viability of 29 ± 5% (p < 0.0001)
whereas according to the fluorescence-based assay
cell death decreased to only 72 ± 9% of control (p < 0.01)
Similar, but less prominent effects of compound exposure on cellular metabolic activity and fluorescence-based cell death could be observed for exposure to IC70-concentrations (Figure 4)
at which all four compounds significantly decreased cellular viability
***p < 0.001; and two-way ANOVA corrected for multiple comparison by Bonferroni’s post hoc analysis to compare differences between assays
Drug-induced kidney injury is one of the most frequently observed adverse effects and often leads to high attrition rates during clinical drug development stages (Siew and Davenport, 2015; Troth et al., 2019). This warrants the use of proper in vitro strategies to assess potential toxic drug effects during early drug development and design. Importantly, many drugs are known to disturb mitochondrial function (Cez et al., 2018)
which may bias the interpretation of results obtained by commonly used tetrazolium salt-based methods that rely on enzymatic activity
we compared the toxicity of four nephrotoxic drugs known to inhibit cellular metabolism measured by the MTT assay and a fluorescence-based method
which is not dependent on cellular metabolism
Differences in concentration- and time-dependent toxicity patterns were observed between both assays
in which the selected drugs interfered stronger and earlier with cellular metabolic capacity
This shows that these drugs reduce the MTT signal before any cellular toxicity is observed
which has often been misinterpreted as cytotoxicity
This underlines the vital need for the selection of proper cell viability methods in early drug safety screening
which further explains the strong cellular metabolic effects observed in our study
our results are in accordance with previously reported cytotoxicity of the drugs studied
and differences between both assays can be explained by effects of the various nephrotoxicants on cellular metabolism
Our observation that cellular metabolic capacity is time-dependently affected by the drugs evaluated in this study highlights the importance of differentiating between metabolically-dependent and -independent cytotoxicity assays
These observations are especially important for primary mitochondrial toxicants as these compounds are expected to decrease mitochondrial function before cell viability is affected
time-dependent comparison of (nephrotoxic) compounds for their cellular toxicity
could provide an ideal experimental setup to differentiate between primary metabolic active drugs and drugs that inhibit cellular metabolism via indirect mechanisms (secondary mitochondrial toxicants)
including inhibitors of other metabolic pathways
such a combination of assays may be relevant when screening for (renal) toxicity in early drug development
combining methods with different readouts might contribute to the prevention of unnecessary drug attritions
differentiating between primary and secondary mitochondrial toxicants is also applicable in pre-clinical studies investigating drug-related adverse effects in other metabolically active tissues such as hepatocytes
methods measuring cellular metabolic activity
do not exclusively assess cellular toxicity
They rather provide a composite readout of cell death and decreased metabolic rate
as opposed to cytotoxicity assessed using assays that do not rely on cellular metabolism
Such an assay would be more suitable for assessing toxicity of compounds that interfere with cellular metabolism
A combination of assays is preferred for initial toxicity screening in drug development to discriminate between drugs that do and do not inhibit cellular metabolic activity
Selection of the proper cell viability assessment methods in early drug safety screening or when assessing toxicity of existing drugs is vital
and will contribute to the development of drugs with lower (nephro)toxic potential and improved safety profile

Photographer Sharon Hoogstraten stands in front of one of her works on display at Evanston Art Center
Jack Austin
Photography is a vessel for cultural preservation for Sharon Hoogstraten
giving dignity and visibility to a native community that has often been unable to control its own image
a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and a Chicago resident
embarked on a photography project more than 10 years ago
documenting modern Potawatomi people dressed in formal regalia
Hoogstraten’s high resolution images
are blown up to life size for display at galleries
“Dancing for our Tribe: Potawatomi Tradition in the New Millenium,” her most recent exhibit
The exhibit has been on display since July 30
featured an artist talk Friday and runs through Aug
where Hoogstraten described her photographic process and the journey that led her to document her people
(and I want to) let everybody know we’re here,” Hoogstraten said
“Everybody thinks that it’s a disappearing culture
We’ve worked very hard to learn the old art skills to work on preserving language before you lose the elders.”
Wilmette resident Audrey Moy said she was already aware of Hoogstraten’s work
but was especially impressed by the collection on view at the opening
She said she liked the cultural stories Hoogstraten’s photographs tell
Moy said photographing modern Indigenous life is a way of recognizing a culture that has been marginalized
“She can capture images that will last through time in our minds,” Moy said
So we’re able to create that in our hearts and our minds.”
Joy first discovered Hoogstraten’s work at Evanston’s Mitchell Museum of the American Indian
She said she wanted people to feel a sense of the Indigenous culture through the exhibit
Moy and Joy said they believe it is important to recognize Indigenous land
The large size of the photographs were out of the ordinary
something especially helpful with the ornate and elaborate Indigenous regalia
and have a black background to kind of show movements
as if they’re dancing,” Joy said
The title of the show and Hoogstraten’s photography book
“Dancing for our Tribe: Potawatomi Tradition in the New Millenium,” reflect the importance of dance in Potawatomi ceremony
Dance is an essential form of cultural conservation for many Indigenous groups
but Hoogstraten said it is vital for the Potawotami for historical reasons
The Potawatomi signed the most treaties with the U.S
meaning they were highly mobile and unable to use physical space to hold on to traditions
“It was really hard for us to hang on to our culture,” Hoogstraten said
“(Many of us were) shipped west of the Mississippi … basically deported
So hanging on to a lot of tradition is not something they take for granted.”
which are curated in a book set to release in late August
are a way to lay roots down for her kids and her family seven generations forward
Hoogstraten asks all of her subjects to write a handwritten description of their outfits in terms of the symbolism and what it means to them
Several such explanations were on display in the Evanston gallery
featured in a small space at the front of the art center
is part of larger long term commitment to diverse artists
and the third of four shows curated by Joy for this year
“I’m trying to lay down our place on the timeline,” Hoogstraten said
“I am trying to find the roots with my kids.”

spoke to Love News about the moment they became stuck between violent rapids and the forces of Mother Nature that transformed their relaxation time into hours of peril
Rescued from Rapids: “We felt like it was a beautiful day and that we chose the right day and time to go down there
We were enjoying the sun and there was children swimming in the river
Rescued from Rapids: “I just kind of look over and notice that the water seems suddenly very more turbulent
And between the moment that I noticed it and the force of the flash flood was no time at all
We were able to leap from where we were about six feet forward onto the tiny rock that we spent the next five or six
five hours or more on a rock that was about two by two square feet
that our cooler that had been on the shore came floating by us
that we realized that we were in a real predicament and we would not be making it to shore.”
as soon as we realized how much trouble we were in we began to pray and just hold on to each other.”
they faced the tough decision of whether to attempt swimming to shore or wait for help
The couple spoke about the hours of waiting for rescue and their final minutes in the water
Rescued from Rapids: “Just watching the rescue team make it to our area was very intense
Rescued from Rapids: “The speed at which it was happening.”
You could tell like everything was like completely being done perfectly
Wendy Garcia and initially they were able to arrive on a rock that was about 10 or 15 feet away from us
The water had so much force that it was impossible for us to even jump like six feet to another rock
when they did reach over to us they basically got us off the rock that we were on basically with their own bodies
Rescued from Rapids: “They were able to pass us from the one rock we were on to the other one and then put us on the kayaks
they did a trial to see how it would go and how we would reach the shore and then
And we just did it exactly how they did it
Rescued from Rapids: “But the team still had to
come back in and gather up their equipment and make sure everyone was secure there.”
The couple expressed gratitude to everyone that played a role in their rescue

Major parallel action: the Kunsthistorisches Museum is exhibiting Master Rembrandt alongside his pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten under the title "Color and Illusion"
The farewell exhibition by KHM Director Sabine Haag is open to the public from Tuesday
what a shock!" was her first reaction to the idea of a Rembrandt exhibition
Numerous such exhibitions have taken place recently
And even if Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum owns six paintings by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669)
First and foremost Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum
plus the magnificent Rembrandt treasures in London and the famous Berlin collection
So it is certainly not easy to get hold of the really great Rembrandts
the extensive oeuvre only allows certain aspects to be addressed
But the desire for Rembrandt was great for the soon to be retiring KHM director Sabine Haag
Since "the KHM only applies for loans with great precision"
a magnificent international bouquet has been collected
An art treatise as an exhibition argument Amsterdam's Rembrandt House was the most important partner and lender
And Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678) also comes into play with Rembrandt's place of life and work
he is placed alongside the Dutch Baroque star
the 21 years younger artist was one of Rembrandt's many pupils
27 borrowed paintings by Hoogstraten plus two of his own therefore hang opposite a total of 28 Rembrandts
Hoogstraten can also refer to a Viennese episode in his biography: "This is the first painter who has deceived me"
enthused Emperor Ferdinand III when Hoogstraten showed him his "Trompe-l'œils"
Ferdinand then had him paint the Inner Burgplatz in an illusionistic frame
Hoogstraten recalled his time with Rembrandt and his understanding of art
How much illusionist is there in the old Rembrandt? A treatise edition therefore dawns in the display case to the left of the entrance as the great hinge for the pair run
The pupil is introduced stylistically close to the teacher in the comparative hanging
He then shines as a master of illusion: magnificently dressed up
his "Old Man in the Window" peers out of the bull's-eye panes
All kinds of bric-a-brac can be found on the pegboard in the "Augenbetrüger-Stillleben"
This also tempts us to search for illusionism in Rembrandt's work
The curtain in his Kassel "Holy Family" seems to be moved by the wind
The girl from Warsaw even rests her hands on a painted frame
A few more comparative exercises are attempted
But while Rembrandt remained faithful to the human image above all
who was much in demand for his trompe-l'œils
increasingly pushing towards cool classicism
It is also a pleasure to make the acquaintance of the original Hoogstraten
It is up to the viewer to decide for themselves how much added value to derive from the pairing of the two artists
there are three more Rembrandt paintings in their entirety: wife Saskia van Uylenburgh waves from the show as Judith

Dutch-American journalist and screenwriter Diederik Van Hoogstraten wrote Hollywood headlines
for the first time in his life, Van Hoogstraten is the headline
This story is about an institution in Hollywood,” Van Hoogstraten said
After being a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press for six years and interviewing some of the biggest stars in the world
Diederik and Wenting “Ting Ting” Xu — another former member — resigned in protest of the alleged corruption happening within the body that votes for the Golden Globes
corruption and verbal abuse are just a few ways to describe the current culture," the resignation letter reads
"Constantly accepting all sorts of presents and gift and little treats from people whose work you’re voting on for the Golden Globes
or the work you're covering for your media outlet — that
is a serious ethical problem," said Van Hoogstraten
I stopped accepting gifts years ago."
a Norwegian journalist who was denied entry three times into the HFPA sued the organization
which essentially lead to a Los Angeles Times investigation exposing self-dealing as well as a lack of diversity
The organization did not have a single Black member
NBC says it will not air the Globes until significant change is made
the HFPA is even losing its members. Van Hoogstraten explained how he first noticed some unethical practices after his first year as a member
"I am a journalist covering entertainment in Hollywood for a European media outlet
so access is very important," he said
seeing their movies and TV shows among the very first in the world
but it was a professional interest of mine to stay in and have access."
Constant self-reflection about whether he stayed too long aside, Van Hoogstraten says what matters is that he finally left
He admits it was hard to leave a 75-year institution that votes on and runs one of the biggest award shows in the world
It's an organization some people spend their whole lives trying to be a part of
"I want to set a good example for my kids," he said
"I don’t want to stick around in a toxic environment
I think it’s important to do the right thing
it does not speak well of your character if you stay in that position for too long."
At the end of the day, Van Hoogstraten knew he made the right decision the moment he realized staying is worse than leaving
An HFPA representative gave us the following statement: "Diederik was given the opportunity to lead as a member of the board and as chair of a new committee to help lead the effort to increase and improve the diversity of the organization
he never offered any meaningful proposals and decided to give up his leadership position after only two Zoom sessions in which he offered no ideas for improving the diversity of the organization
We regret these facts were not disclosed by him in his interview with Spectrum 1."

“Staying inside the association is no longer tenable for us,” Diederik van Hoogstraten and Wenting Xu say
Two members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have resigned
saying the culture at the embattled organization is one of “insulation
“Staying inside the association is no longer tenable for us,” Dutch member Diederik van Hoogstraten and Chinese member Ting Ting Wengting Xu said in a letter addressed to President Ali Sar and board members Helen Hoehne
Van Hoogstraten and Xu said the majority of 90-person membership “resists deep change” and “internal opposition to the status quo has been stifled
Critical voices have largely been ignored.” They also mentioned the new bylaws that they call “watered down to meet the demands of a majority of the current Board.”
the members approved a new ethics code and hired more lawyers and consultants
However, as TheWrap exclusively reported last month
members were turning on the organization’s lawyers and arguing to sue for providing “improper and legally damaging advice.” Many also renewed calls for the current board to resign over its handling of the firestorm surrounding the HFPA
corruption and verbal abuse are just a few ways to describe that culture,” the letter from Van Hoogstraten and Xu said
“The HFPA continues to accommodate a toxic environment that undermines professional journalism
The bullying of members by fellow members is left unquestioned and unpunished
The badgering of talent and publicists: ditto.”
The letter went on to say that internal transparency has “decreased,” so financial details are even murkier than before and that there is still resistance to welcoming new members
Generous payments for committee members are still allowed
no inspiring leadership,” the two members wrote
“We do not wish to be associated with a group
ostensibly dedicated to honest journalism and free speech
that relies on consultants and lawyers to speak for them in vague
It continued: “In the spring there was a window to lead … That window has closed and Hollywood is moving on.”
inclusive organization for the next generation of reporters “who simply want to work together
the board members of the HFPA said: “At a time when the overwhelming majority of our members have chosen to be a part of change
it is disappointing that some members have decided to try and splinter our organization and sow division and doubt
the Board and membership of the HFPA share one
common goal — passing the transformational change our organization needs.”
The board members’ statement continued: “The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is an organization with more than 75 years of history
The amount of change that we have accomplished thus far is only the beginning
This is a crucial time for our organization
and we stand ready to collaborate with our members and outside groups to make this change a reality
We are forever grateful to the members that have decided to stay the course during this historic and trying time to help make this new era a reality for the HFPA.”
See Van Hoogstraten and Xu’s full letter below
Officers and members of the Board of DirectorsRe: resignationsJune 17
Dear colleagues,The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a toxic place for working journalists
studio heads and talent — have since February laid out the reasons why the HFPA needs to change quickly and profoundly
In this letter we will add our perspective as HFPA members who supported reform
Staying inside the association is no longer tenable for us
We want to explain the reasons why.• The majority of the membership resists deep change
despite our lawyers and spokespersons suggesting otherwise publicly
Internal opposition to the status quo has been stifled
Critical voices have largely been ignored.• The new bylaws written by the consultants of Ropes & Gray have been watered down to meet the demands of a majority of the current Board and many change-averse members
Expanding the Board to 12 HFPA members and merely three outsiders
all but guarantees the current culture will continue to thrive.• Insulation
corruption and verbal abuse are just a few ways to describe that culture
And as Netflix founder Reed Hastings has said: a workplace culture cannot change
It’s a statement we have seen proven over the past four months
The HFPA continues to accommodate a toxic environment that undermines professional journalism
The badgering of talent and publicists: ditto
Perhaps the new Hotline will make a difference; on the other hand
complaints will end up being looked at by the Board itself
And just recently a letter of complaint sent by one of us about the behavior of a fellow member
was forwarded to the target of the letter without our knowledge or approval.• Many members continue to believe we are victims
an attitude that guarantees no self-reflection or change will occur.• The election system enables power-driven candidates to gather majority votes by promising internal jobs to other members
generous payments for committee work are still allowed and there is no minimum philanthropic requirement stipulated
at least 50% of income derived from NBC could automatically be passed on to philanthropy — a simple move which would benefitrecipients and could automatically serve to limit internal committee pay.• Internal transparency
so members don’t know the details about the financials anymore
But we do know payments for internal jobs have skyrocketed
Morally and fiscally this self-dealing and sense of entitlement is a scandal in and of itself
But the lack of transparency goes beyond the financials: since February most decision-making has happened behind closed doors
Questions and suggestions from us as well as outside critics have been waved off or dealt with by hiredconsultants
lawyers and PR agents.• Due to the strategy to let lawyers and a PR firm do the talking we have come across as tone deaf for four months now
We do not wish to be associated with a group
legalistic terms.• There is still significant resistance to welcoming a large and diverse class of new members
The new proposed bylaws do not contain clear guidance for quickly identifying and admitting qualified journalists; something
we could have done months ago.• The idea to have all members resign and then re-apply under strict new requirements — a smart way to winnow down the membership to active reporters only — has been discarded by Ropes & Gray and the HFPA leadership
This means a large number of non-journalists will remain members of the HFPA
To make clear that we understood how the HFPA could learn from its mistakes
how we could come out healthier through radical reform and radical transparency
That window has closed and Hollywood is moving on
respectful place where working international journalists in Los Angeles can develop and thrive
After we leave we plan to build a transparent
professional andinclusive organization for the current and next generations of reporters who simply want to work together
Amazon Studios is taking a leap into faith-based projects
teaming up with The Wonder Project for a new film and TV partnership
The Wonder Project was just formed last year by film producer Jon Erwin (American Underdog) and former Netflix and YouTube executive Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten
The Chosen creator Dallas Jenkins is also said to be one of The Wonder Project's largest shareholders and advisers, via THR
The first project under this new pact is House of David, which Prime Video - which has just cut hundreds of jobs - has just ordered to series.
House of David follows the, 'once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride,' while, 'a prophet prepares to overthrow him — anointing the outcast shepherd boy David as a second king.'
The description adds, 'As Saul’s fury grows, David navigates love, violence and politics in the court of the very man he’s destined to replace. Two kings. One Kingdom. The outcome is war.'
The first three seasons of Jenkins' The Chosen are available on Prime Video, with the fourth season rolling out theatrically over several weeks.
'When we met with Jon, Kelly and Dallas, their clear and passionate vision for The Wonder Project and their ambition to nurture universal stories of love, triumph and spirituality moved us,' Amazon MGM Studios‘ head of TV Vernon Sanders said in a statement.
'We are very excited about the scope, scale and storytelling involved with House of David and look forward to sharing this epic and many others with our global Prime Video customers,' Sanders added.
'Our goal at The Wonder Project is to tell stories that restore faith in things worth believing in, and to do this at scale,' Merryman Hoogstraten added in her statement.
'We’ve been blown away by Amazon’s commitment to help us do this — both through the significant resources they are dedicating and their trust in us to tell these stories authentically to our audience,' she added.
'With House of David being the first project under this new deal, we're setting the stage for a series of compelling, values-driven movies, and TV shows,' added Erwin.
'This is a milestone for The Wonder Project, and we're thrilled to be working with a company that understands and supports our mission and our audience in such a groundbreaking way,' he stated.
The first project - House of David - is based on an idea by Erwin, who will executive produce with Chad Oaks, Mike Frislev and Jonathan Walker.
Justin Rosenblatt will serve as the executive in charge of production on behalf of The Wonder Project.
The series is also produced by Nomadic Pictures and Argonauts, along with Kingdom Story Company and Lionsgate Television.
No production schedule was given at this time, and it's unclear when casting may begin for the faith-based project.

A businesswoman has won her court fight for damages against a company run by notorious criminal tycoon Nicholas Van Hoogstraten's children over claims 'armed thugs' were sent to 'burgle' her luxury Chelsea flat during a row over a loft extension
Maria El Massouri asked London's High Court to stop repeated 'trespasses to her flat' following a clash with Omani Estates Limited, a property company owned and run by Van Hoogstraten's eldest son Max Hamilton and three of his siblings.
The company claimed it owned the roof space above Mrs Massouri's flat and her lawyers told the court the company had 'repeatedly arranged for agents to burgle her flat, removing its front door and later for armed thugs to smash security cameras from its walls.'
Workmen sent by the company also entered the building using scaffolding and installed a horizontal internal wooden barrier, blocking the stairs leading from her flat to the loft room.
Mrs Massouri and her husband purchased the property and later obtained planning permission in 2002 to build a mansard roof extension on top of their second floor flat.
However, when Mrs Massouri applied for adverse possession in 2020 over the area covered by her extension to bring it inside the legal footprint of her flat, Omani Estates Limited objected alleging that it was a trespass on its property - 18 years after it was completed.
Now Judge Nicholas Caddick KC has ruled that, whilst the company has 'paper ownership' of the 'airspace' above the businesswoman's flat, it is no longer entitled to claim physical possession, as she now has 'squatters' rights'.
The judge awarded her damages for trespass, an injunction to ban further intrusions and a declaration that she has acquired the right to use the loft space because the company's possession claim came too late.
He rejected the company's counterclaim for an order that Mrs Massouri herself was the 'trespasser.'
The court heard that Omani Estates Ltd is run by Britannia Hamilton, 33, Richmond Hamilton, 33, Alexander Hamilton, 36, and oldest son Max Hamilton, 38.
They are four of the children of Nicholas Adolf von Hessen, 78, previously Nicholas van Hoogstraten, a notorious property tycoon and landlord whose fortune was estimated at £800m in the early 2000s.
He is infamous for his treatment of tenants - who he once reportedly described as 'scumbags' - and has served jail time, including for paying a gang to throw a grenade into the Brighton house of Rabbi Bernard Braunstein, whose son owed him a debt.
He was described by a judge presiding over one of his cases as 'a sort of self-imagined devil who likes to think of himself as an emissary of Beelzebub'.
He was jailed in 2002 for the manslaughter of former business partner Mohammed Raja, who was shot and stabbed on his London doorstep by thugs in 1999.
He was released a year later when the Court of Appeal overturned his conviction, but was subsequently sued in a civil court and ordered to pay £6million to Mr Raja's family.
Judge Caddick said that, in 2002, Mrs Massouri and her husband - who died in 2013 - built a mansard roof extension on top of their second floor flat in Finborough Road, having obtained planning permission.
The move followed a wrangle with Rosemary Hamilton, Nicholas Van Hoogstraten's former partner and mother to Max Hamilton and Britannia Hamilton, who had owned the freehold of the building from 1990.
Mrs Massouri, her husband and the two other tenants of the flats in the building bought out the right to the freehold in 1999 after at one stage going to court to press their right to do so.
However in 1996, before selling the freehold, Mrs Hamilton, now known as Rosemary Baffour-Awuah, sold a lease on the third floor of the building - effectively the airspace above the second floor - to another person, who in turn sold it to Omani Estates in 2017.
When in 2020, Ms Massouri applied for adverse possession - or squatters' rights - over the area covered by her extension, attempting to bring it inside the legal footprint of her flat, Omani Estates Ltd raised its first 'complaint', alleging that it was a trespass on its property.
Setting out the subsequent intrusions into her property, the judge said: 'Agents acting for Omani took a number of steps with regard to 93 Finborough Road.
'Between 5 and 7 February 2022, they entered the property and removed the door at the bottom of the stairs that led up from the first floor, together with its closing mechanism.
'Between 11 and 14 February 2022, they erected a partition across the half-landing between the ground to first floors, thereby obstructing access to storage cupboards there which were used by tenants in the building.
'On 4 March 2022, an agent of Omani went up the stairs into the second floor flat. CCTV footage shows that, on this person's way back down the stairs, he knocked down and removed the CCTV camera that Mrs El Massouri's partner had installed on the half-landing between the first and second floors.
'The same happened on 28 or 29 March 2002 when a person wearing a hood and carrying a stave of wood again mounted the stairs, removed and took away a replacement CCTV camera that had been put up on behalf of Mrs El Massouri.
'At some point, probably between March and early June 2022, Omani caused exterior scaffolding to be erected at the rear of the property.
'On 6 June 2022, two hooded people, one of them carrying a wooden stave, mounted the stairs to the second floor and knocked down yet another replacement CCTV camera that had been put up there and took it and some other items away with them.
'On 9 June 2022, Omani's agents entered the property and blocked access from the second floor to the third floor by means of a horizontal partition screwed to the walls of the stairwell between those floors.
'They also removed a handrail and balusters and screwed shut the doors to the rooms on the third floor. It is not clear how they accessed the premises but when they left, having installed the partition, they presumably did so via the scaffolding.
'As a result of these actions, on 10 June 2022, Mrs El Massouri applied for and obtained an ex parte injunction which seems to have put an end to any further incidents.'
In its written defence to the action, the company's lawyers branded the roof extension 'unlawful', saying: 'It is averred that, at all material times, the claimant and her husband knew or ought to have known that the claimant had no legal estate or interest in the roof area.'
Regarding the intrusions into Ms Massouri's flat - which she currently rents out - the company's lawyers said removal of the door was necessary, since it was a 'nuisance and/or trespass which the defendant was entitled to remedy.'
'The door was removed from its hinges by third party contractors, but the door was not damaged or removed from the property,' the company says.
'It is admitted that the partition was erected by the defendant's third party contractors.
'The scaffolding was erected only upon areas included within the defendant's demise.
'The third party contractors were expressly instructed not to enter the premises demised by the second floor flat lease.
'To the extent that it is alleged, it is denied that the defendant and/or its agents attended the property and/or instructed any third party to do so on their behalf.
'The defendant has a right to possession of the extension in so far as it is situated in the roof area.
'The claimant occupies the trespass land without the defendant's licence or consent.'
Judge Caddick said Mrs Massouri had established adverse possession or squatters' rights over her attic via the legal principle of proprietory estoppel, despite Omani being the paper owners, because the company's claim to ownership had come too long after the building of the loft conversion.
'Ultimately, in my judgment, the facts point to a belief in Mr and Mrs El Massouri that they had the right to carry out the works to construct the new third floor,' he said.
'It would be unconscionable for the defendant to be entitled now to enforce its rights under the lease against the claimant.'
Going on to award her £2,105 damages for the intrusions into her property, the judge said: 'I have no hesitation in accepting the claimant's evidence that the door to the claimant's flat was removed and was taken away by agents acting on behalf of the defendant.
'The stairs and the half-landing between the first and second floors were part of the demise under the claimant's Lease, there can be no doubt that the removal of the door at the bottom of those stairs and the actions of the defendant's agents...were acts of trespass for which the defendant is responsible.
'In order to install a horizontal partition between the second and third floors, the defendant's agents must have accessed some part at least of the second floor.
'As Maximilian Hamilton was unable to assist in relation to the precise nature of the instructions given to the defendant's agents, it is unclear whether those agents had acted outside their instructions but, in any event, I do not see that it makes any difference.
'In my judgment, the defendant is liable for the acts of people who were only on the premises as its agents, seeking to assert its purported rights.'
He made declarations as to ownership of the various areas, saying that the mansard and top storey were Mrs Massouri's by adverse possession.
'In my judgment, in view of the history of this matter and the effect it has clearly had on the claimant's peace of mind, the claimant is entitled to a permanent injunction.
'The defendant is restrained, whether by itself, its servants or agents, from entering or attempting to enter any part of the premises lawfully occupied by the claimant, save for the purposes of exercising rights, such as the right of repair, falling within reservations made in the claimant's lease.'

rising costs and a drop in berry consumption
marketing manager at Belgian cooperative Hoogstraten
How is the European market performing for Hoogstraten’s strawberries at the moment
Jan Engelen: The season has been disrupted by a lot of challenges
including higher costs and lower consumption
The spring was difficult for Hoogstraten’s strawberries
Eastern European growers are increasingly looking to supply to our markets
France and Scandinavia are the most important markets for Hoogstraten strawberries at the moment
while Germany will become more important in the coming weeks due to lower domestic production
How are your blueberries and other berries developing
JE: Blueberries are looking excellent this year
The frost during the flowering period was a little challenging
but fortunately our growers suffered manageable damage
And the beautiful spring weather ensured excellent quality blueberries
We expect 180 tonnes of blueberries this year
but the bushes are older and are generating higher volumes than last year
We are hoping for a great season and are happy to inspire people to get started with Belgian blueberries
The supply of raspberries and blackberries will increase rapidly in the coming weeks
This year we launched a mixed berry snack pack
As we have different soft fruit lines like blueberries
raspberries and blackberries in our portfolio
a mixed pack with strawberries is a quick fix
The cherry season also recently launched at Hoogstraten
Are you targeting any particular markets or regions for growth at the moment
the UK is an important market for Hoogstraten strawberries
Last year we developed a B2B campaign for the first time in the UK to promote fresh
Are there any exciting new varieties that you are looking at
JE: This year we are holding tasting sessions supervised by our quality department to test different strawberry varieties
The main objective of these sessions is to judge new varieties on taste
The results will be analysed by our quality department and communicated back to the strawberry growers
but we see a stronger trend than ever before toward new promising varieties
Of course the Hoogstraten brand will always be a guarantee for high-quality
We are also organising B2B tasting days at the end of June
including a visit to a blueberry farm and the Hoogstraten Research Centre
in order to discover the new technologies for varietal research
Are rising costs upping the pressure on growers
Are you affected by worker shortages at all
Coöperatie Hoogstraten is facing a challenging season characterised by increasing costs of energy
all of which have a major impact on margins
High gas prices and subsequent lower energy use are also a challenge
leading to later glasshouse production and putting returns to growers under severe pressure
These challenges have a long-lasting effect on our production
At the moment our strawberry growers are carefully considering the prospects for strawberries in the autumn and winter
Every grower needs to choose the most realistic option for cultivation at the end of the year
If the retail and wholesale sector are not able to pay the price needed to grow strawberries in autumn and winter with these high added costs
this will have an effect on the available volume of Hoogstraten strawberries during these months
JE: Minimising negative effects on the local community and the environment is a priority for Hoogstraten
We always work according to sustainable methods and stimulate sustainable entrepreneurship among our growers
Examples of methods adopted by growers include bee pollination and using environmentally friendly biopesticides to control harmful insects
It is the role of Hoogstraten to support all members with targeted advice about the use of natural resources and CO2 reductions
it is not easy to comply with all the requirements from different clients in Europe
Everyone has their own demands regarding sustainability and in these difficult times we want to limit the excessive administrative burden on growers
there is no European tool to compare the data on carbon footprints at the moment
It is very difficult to communicate with quantitative data due to the different measurements
Sustainable growth starts with our growers and employees
We need to act together in order to fulfil our central role within the chain and make the food chain more sustainable
The 4th International Strawberry Congress returns to Antwerp on 21-24 September
promising an outstanding programme of presentations
discussion and practical demonstrations based around the key topic of digitalisation and sustainability
Are you engaged in any marketing or promotional campaigns to boost consumption
JE: As the UK is an important market for Hoogstraten strawberries in autumn
we launched our first strawberry marketing campaign in the UK this year
available all year round and supplied directly from Belgium
flavour and sustainability were at the forefront of the campaign
a bit of a luxury item and therefore reduce their purchases
That’s why a good marketing and promotional campaign is essential
our promotional campaign focuses on customer intimacy
We developed short videos of our growers to tell the story behind the product
and we work with foodies to inspire our consumers and implement in-store actions with custom-made packaging together with the retailers
The ruling on a £6m civil action from the dead man's family came after Mr Van Hoogstraten was cleared of manslaughter in the criminal courts
a former business associate of Mr Van Hoogstraten
was stabbed and shot by two of the property tycoon's henchmen after answering the doorbell at his home in Sutton
He had been in the process of suing Mr Van Hoogstraten over a business deal at the time of his death
were jailed for life at the Old Bailey in 2002
Mr Van Hoogstraten walked free from prison a year into a 10-year sentence for manslaughter when the court of appeal set aside his conviction
The dead man's family brought the £6m civil case for damages to ask the high court to decide if Mr Van Hoogstraten was directly involved
During the trial he had denied hiring two hitmen and his lawyer
suggested the killing was more like a robbery "gone horribly wrong" than a carefully planned hit by a powerful businessman
Giving judgment today following a six-day hearing in London last month
Mr Justice Lightman said: "I am satisfied that the recruitment of the two thugs was for the purpose of murdering Mr Raja and not merely frightening or hurting him
"The use of two violent thugs armed with a shotgun was more than was needed to frighten or injure him
The second shot was deliberately aimed at killing him
"Mr Raja had at all times shown himself resilient
ready to resist threats and to complain to the police
"Nothing less than murder would rid Mr van Hoogstraten of this thorn in his flesh."
Mr Justice Lightman said he reached his conclusion "on the balance of probabilities" - the civil law standard of proof - "and indeed
beyond reasonable doubt" - the criminal law standard
was trying to obtain the release or settlement of Mr Raja's court action against him on terms highly favourable to Mr van Hoogstraten
"His purpose in murdering Mr Raja has not been achieved because
Mr Raja's family have been as resilient as was Mr Raja in his lifetime in standing up to Mr van Hoogstraten."
said outside the court that the family had been seeking justice
"No amount of money will ever make up for the loss of our father," he said
Mr Raja added he would like to see Mr Van Hoogstraten "behind bars"
The property tycoon - who earned his first criminal record at the age of 11
described his politics as being "to the right of Attila the Hun" and became a vocal supporter of Zimbabwe's president
Robert Mugabe - was not in court or represented during the civil proceedings
the most serious of which was damaging the home of a clergyman with a hand grenade in 1968
for which he received a four-year sentence
He has described his tenants as "filth"
business rivals as "maggots" and ramblers who cross the land around his East Sussex mansion as "scum"
having told Mr Justice Lightman's clerk after an earlier hearing that he was leaving the country and would not be back until next year

Whether it’s selecting the right strawberry varieties
marketing to consumers or overcoming challenges like climate change and high costs
business unit manager fruit at Belgian cooperative Hoogstraten
How are strawberry volumes looking this season at Hoogstraten
Michiel Vermeiren: Around 34,000 tonnes of Hoogstraten strawberries will reach the market in 2024
Due to the entry of some new members and the expansion of existing growers
this is more than the traditional 30,000 tonnes
Seasonal homegrown fruit is increasingly becoming a quality label itself
and consumers appreciate the delicious taste and authenticity
MV: Our strawberry growers are responsible for the varieties on their own farm
but we guide our growers in the selection of suitable varieties for the market
we have organised different tasting sessions for growers
employees and buyers supervised by our quality department with different strawberry varieties
The results will be analysed by our quality department
and communicated back to the strawberry growers
but we are seeing an evolution towards new promising varieties
as there is no such thing as one ideal variety for every type of growing company
Important varieties at Hoogstraten are Elsanta
Cultivation under protection accounts for most of the crop
What markets are you targeting and which are growing
MV: Our focus is on countries in northern and western Europe
Growing markets for Hoogstraten strawberries include France and the UK
Do you have any promotional campaigns planned
MV: Although Hoogstraten’s name recognition is good
With the B2C campaign “Hoogstraten… Then it’s delicious!”
Coöperatie Hoogstraten is supporting strawberry sales in a way that adds value for retailers
The campaign should make consumers crave strawberries
Hoogstraten strawberries will already be at the centre of every Belgian consumer’s life
The strawberry punnet will have a QR code linking to the campaign website
We highlight the grower module: who are the faces behind Hoogstraten strawberries
Consumers can even send a personal message to the growers
The campaign also has a big focus on online communication
grower movies and inspiration via recipes will be shared on social networks
as well as at the international level via paid campaigns at peak production moments
The message ‘Hoogstraten… Then it’s delicious!’ will be reinforced with fun activities in several Flemish cities
And all this is supported by radio messages and a campaign on buses
Hoogstraten is also capitalising on the opportunities offered by retailers themselves
Cooperation with retailers’ media partners strengthens brand awareness and brand preference and
through promotion in and around supermarkets
What are the main challenges at the moment
MV: Growers’ returns are coming under pressure
Prices for their products have remained at the same level for several years
but also for their suppliers which pass these on
Another factor contributing to increased costs is investment in sustainability
Most growers are willing to make efforts for the environment
but these are uncertain times due to nitrogen measures and the manure action plan
we are concerned about the long-term availability of products due to climate change and severe weather circumstances
On top of that the administrative burden and complexity of certification for growers is increasing every year
What’s the best way to help growers struggling with high costs
MV: While cooperatives struggle in many countries
Over the years we’ve kept developing the services we can offer our growers and the things they need
sustainability and representation in interest groups
We believe being able to outsource those things remains an added value
clients today can use accessible and concrete information shared by Coöperatie Hoogstraten
Which varieties are currently ripe for picking
What volumes can we expect in the coming days
This is useful information for our clients and Coöperatie Hoogstraten lists everything weekly for the benefit of its customers
That information sharing is very much appreciated
We want to further expand that weekly update to also give buyers the necessary information on crops and crop development
we have already revamped our buyer platform so that our customers can quickly find certain information
His Excellency was in mad, sparkling form. After thousands of supporters were bussed into a football stadium for an election rally this week, Robert Gabriel Mugabe used the podium to blame Zimbabwe’s ills on western politicians keen to promote equal rights for homosexuals.
Flanked by his wife Grace, who has been accused of having an affair with the country’s finance chief because her 89-year-old husband can no longer satisfy her, Mugabe promised to ‘chop the heads off’ gays, and took a swipe at Barack Obama and David Cameron for supporting their rights.
‘This homosexuality thing seeks to destroy our lineage by saying John and John should wed, Maria and Maria should wed,’ thundered Mugabe as his wife nodded approvingly alongside him. ‘Imagine this son born out of an African father — Obama — who says if you want aid, you should accept the homosexuality practice. We will never do that.’
In a long, rambling speech, the despot added: ‘If you take men and lock them in a house for five years and tell them to come up with two children and they fail to do that, then we will chop off their heads.’
He went on to accuse other African countries of ‘accepting the practice’ in return for aid donations from Britain and America.
Of course Mugabe, who, despite his infirmity and age, is fighting a general election this Wednesday, has long railed at interference by Westerners.
He notoriously drove the country’s white farmers — often of British descent — off their land in a prolonged campaign of terror, and is now introducing laws banning whites from owning businesses.
Yet, curiously, one British man is flourishing under Mugabe’s murderous regime. While his fellow white farmers have been murdered in their hundreds, and their land given to the despot’s cronies, this slight grey-haired individual has become Zimbabwe’s biggest landowner.
As well as owning a staggering 1,600 square miles of prime land in the heart of the country (Cornwall is only 1,400 square miles), the British exile also owns two sprawling homes replete with tennis courts, swimming pools and garish chrome architecture, with grounds patrolled by Mugabe’s secret police.
So who is this intimate friend of the ageing despot? Step forward Nicholas Van Hoogstraten, the self-confessed ‘amoral businessman’ who made his fortune as a slum landlord in Britain but is better known for being the brains behind the gruesome gangland slaying of a business rival, who was stabbed five times before being shot in the head.
Once described by a judge as a ‘self-imagined devil who thinks he is an emissary of Beelzebub’, Hoogstraten was born in Bognor in 1946 and as an 11-year-old schoolboy started selling stamps to noted collectors.
He was a bully to his mother Edna and hated his father Charles.
He once changed his name by deed poll to Adolf von Hessen, and used countless aliases to evade the authorities while, over the next five decades, he made a multi-million pound fortune.
He also picked up a string of convictions for offences which ranged from organising a henchman to throw a grenade at a priest, to the 2002 conviction for manslaughter for the killing of that business rival. The verdict was overturned on appeal, but he was ordered to pay the victim’s family £6 million in a civil case in 2005.
Two years later, this odious individual slunk out of the country, leaving behind his £40 million Sussex mansion Hamilton Palace, together with the vast mausoleum he built there for himself — and ended up in Zimbabwe, where he already had business interests, determined to make himself even richer.
He insists ‘the only purpose in creating great wealth is to separate oneself from the riffraff’, and famously keeps details of his business deals in his head so that there is ‘nothing in writing, no records of anything’.
Unfortunately for Hoogstraten, his friends in Zimbabwe do not follow his example. Mugabe’s intelligence agencies, for instance, which run a myriad of criminal operations, from diamond smuggling to arms dealing, keep detailed written dossiers on all their partners-in-crime.
After reports this week that Mugabe is, predictably, planning to rig the forthcoming elections, Hoogstraten was named as having donated $3 million to Mugabe, who has set up terror camps to hold political opponents and has ordered thousands of unemployed thugs to be deployed to intimidate voters.
Hoogstraten said this week that the donation was not being used to rig election results.
In short, the documents suggest he wants access to the world’s biggest diamond find this century.
Mugabe and his military were alerted to reports of locals finding priceless gems near Marange in a remote south-west corner of the country in 2007. The military immediately sealed the area and chased and killed local prospectors off the land.
Now it is a highly-militarized zone, patrolled with soldiers and dogs, to prevent local smugglers taking the stones, which experts say could be worth many billions of pounds.
Headed Top Secret and allegedly prepared for Mugabe’s shadowy military junta, known as the Joint Operations Command, the documents I was passed claim that Hoogstraten has struck an agreement with Mugabe to be given a lucrative diamond concession at the Marange diamond fields.
Experts believe the gems from Marange could account for more than a quarter of all diamonds mined around the globe, and Mugabe and his corrupt cronies are already siphoning millions from the mine every year.
The documents also suggest that two of Hoogstraten’s sons, Maximillion and Alexander, are appointed to a company called Mbada Diamonds, which is run by the president to extract the diamonds and sell them to China.
Such loyalty to Mugabe’s regime means Hoogstraten’s family would join the list of unsavoury characters already mining these gems and taking them out of the country via an elaborate network of aircraft, vehicles and men, all controlled by the Zimbabwean regime.
The mines are currently operated by Sino-Zimbabwe, a joint venture between Mugabe’s government and the Chinese government, and Anjin Investments, another company with ties to Beijing which is building a new multi-million-pound military training and spy centre for Mugabe in return for access to the gems.
‘These diamonds have been captured by political elites and are used to fund violence and keep these people in power,’ says Farai Maguwu, an independent investigator into abuses at the diamond fields. ‘That means these diamonds are blood diamonds.’
Not that this would trouble Hoogstraten. Since moving to Zimbabwe, he has been making himself indispensable to Robert Mugabe’s regime.
So, while life expectancy for ordinary people in the country has plummeted to 50 years for both men and women, Hoogstraten’s fortune has soared.
On his huge ranch, called Central Estates, Hoogstraten has vast cattle herds and thousands of acres of crops.
He also has game animals, and regularly invites guests from Mugabe’s inner circle, as well as overseas business guests, to trophy-hunt these elephants, big cats and buffalo. His private life in Zimbabwe is equally colourful. Before he left Britain, he had five children by three women — and he now describes himself as a ‘confirmed bachelor with three or four mistresses’.
He is also using his 300,000-strong army of intelligence agents to ensure opposition strongholds are targeted, with instructions to carry out acts of sabotage and fire-bombings at voting stations if it appears that Morgan Tsvangirai, his opponent, is taking a poll lead.
According to the documents about his nefarious business activities, cash supplied by Hoogstraten has been used to buy vehicles for Mugabe’s secret police to target opponents.
The documents also indicate that after Hoogstraten handed over $500,000 for Mugabe’s coffers at a private ceremony in April this year, he demanded — and was given — guarantees concerning a whole raft of business concerns should Mugabe ‘win’ this week’s elections.
As well as the diamond concessions, the documents claim that Hoogstraten has asked the regime for paratroopers to patrol his businesses, and for secret service agents to continue to provide a 24-hour guard at his opulent Harare properties in case his enemies should try to kill him.
The documents state that Hoogstraten, 68, has also been granted assurances that his other business interests in Africa — which include dealings with President Obiang of Equatorial Guinea, and mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo — will be protected as far as possible with the help of Mugabe’s military and diplomatic might.
Amid predictions that Mugabe could be ousted by his own ZANU party if he loses the poll, Hoogstraten has ensured that he has built up close links with Emmerson Mnangagwa, the country’s defence minister, known as The Crocodile on account of his violence and savagery towards opponents.
Desperate to take over from Mugabe, who suffers from prostate cancer and frequently falls asleep at politburo meetings, Mnangagwa is a ruthless killer who frequently visits Hoogstraten.
Incredibly, the documents claim that Hoogstraten has also promised to pay for public relations companies, as well as providing $2.5million in cash for security and an aircraft to be used by Mugabe in the event that he has to leave the country ‘due to an inconclusive electoral outcome on July 31’.
That, however, is unlikely to happen. Mugabe and Nicholas Marcel Van Hoogstraten have too much to lose from their macabre relationship.
Which is terrible news for the poor, suffering people of Zimbabwe.
