Beer Man is a weekly profile of beers from across the country and around the world

I was recently in the mood for a fine Belgian ale
With so many outstanding breweries in Belgium
you really can't go wrong with any beer from that country
Kasteel Donker caught my eye with its picturesque building on the label and 11-percent ABV proclamation
Donker's color is brown with red highlights
There also is a strong brown sugar character
The strong alcohol content was not noticeable at first but appeared a bit in the finish as the beer warmed in the glass
Donker was not as heavy or syrupy as many quadrupels
Its use of some darker malts gave it a color and slight roasted profile that also made it stand out from the pack
The complexity of Donker has a lot to do with the aging
The 750 ml bottle that I bought just two weeks before writing this had a bottling date of Oct
Kasteel produces no less than three other 11-percent beers — Triple
but its maturation in cognac barrels increases it ABV to 12 percent
The last really intrigues me — I've only had one beer like it
the brandy barrel-aged Goldilock's Revenge from O'so Brewery in Plover
Kasteel is imported by Wetten Importers, which has a lineup that includes the excellent Gouden Carolus and Delirium Tremens beers. It has a list of distributors by state at http://wettenimporters.com/distributors
Many beers are available only regionally. Check the brewer's website, which often contains information on product availability by mail. Contact Todd Haefer at beerman@postcrescent.com.To view previous Beer Man columns, click here.
