Romain de Reusme, mayor of Ixelles, posted on LinkedIn: “Nightlife is a real asset for Ixelles: it boosts the local economy, attracts residents and visitors, and contributes to cultural influence. But it also poses challenges in terms of noise pollution, cleanliness and security.” The Ixelles Night Council has been formed in an effort to strike that balance. “In Ixelles, we are implementing concrete solutions for a dynamic and responsible nightlife,” De Reusme continued. “Because, if the night belongs to everyone, it must also respect the sleep of local residents.” Your email address will not be published. Communications officer Julie Delvaux has confirmed that the renovation is now expected to be finished by early 2026 focused on upgrading the reception area and adding new multipurpose rooms and a didactic space aimed at improving energy efficiency and enhancing collection preservation Complications have arisen due to the addition of new offices and unexpected administrative delays which caused the technical phase to start later than planned "We are also working on several museographic projects that require time to develop," Delvaux noted the budget for the renovation has increased The current costs amount to 11 million euros about 1.5 million euros more than initially projected in 2018 The museum has received a 4.2 million euro subsidy from the French Community government Delvaux assures that the renovation is progressing well The second phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2025 but visitors will not be able to enjoy the museum’s extensive art collection until early suspected of a deadly home invasion in the Brussels municipality of Ixelles have been arrested in Lisbon the Brussels prosecutor's office has confirmed The home invasion on 29 August left a 57-year-old French man dead and is believed to have been orchestrated via the dating app Grindr The two suspects arrested are of Brazilian origin and allegedly also used Grindr to target people in Portugal Shortly after the deadly home invasion in Ixelles a first suspect was arrested who had been in contact with the two suspects arrested in Lisbon Three victims were shot during the home invasion A 22-year-old young man and a 57-year-old woman were not fatally injured and were taken to hospital the youngest victim had arranged a date through Grindr when two Spanish-speaking men turned up and demanded money and the perpetrators shot and killed the father The Brussels public prosecutor's office has not yet been able to release any information on the exact circumstances and motives of the perpetrators but has confirmed that they are investigating whether the perpetrators and one of the victims may have been in contact via a dating app the vibrant multicultural quarter where Audrey Hepburn was born I had a brief conversation with the taxi driver about Belgium He looked at me in his rear-view mirror and said There were a few seconds of doubt and confusion “I lived there once and I really love it,” I said Belgian beauty: Audrey Hepburn Photograph: Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesA plaque highlights Audrey Hepburn's house There is usually a group of excited girls hanging around outsideConversations about Belgium are – in my experience – often this brief and any mention of Brussels is likely to land me in an unwanted conversation about office blocks Brexit or a tiny statue of a naked weeing boy I’ll see someone’s eyes light up and they’ll say I love Brussels” – and then they’ll tell me about the friend or relative they frequently visit having escaped a joyless job on a hotel boat in the south of France beer and chocolate – it is an altogether different Brussels that I fell in love with And that Brussels is one where few tourists rarely ever venture I was now sharing an apartment with Sandrine we were two minutes away from African shopping arcades and in the other a very hip cafe beloved by the British expat crowd and Belgians alike Mention Brussels and risk being drawn into unwanted conversations about Brexit or a tiny statue of a weeing boyBoth the arcades and the cafe are still going strong Take a walk up Chaussée de Wavre for a little taste of Kinshasa in Belgium and then head on to Place Saint Boniface for one of the coolest cafes in Brussels It’s worth the price of a coffee alone just to sit outside in the gorgeous little square and watch the world go by – a world which is Belgian British expats have always been a presence in Ixelles. In 1842, Charlotte and Emily Brontë – on a year out, like me – regularly spent their Sundays at a house on Chaussée d’Ixelles, having tea with a British family who lived there. Later, in 1907, an English nurse named Edith Cavell arrived in Ixelles to work at a nursing school The First World War proved fatal for Edith Cavell but she is still remembered in Brussels There is now a street and a hospital named after her – although not in Ixelles where they perhaps might best belong Little Kinshasha: an African grocer’s in Matongé. Photograph: Joanna van Mulder/The ObserverAnother notable British resident of Ixelles was Audrey Hepburn, who was born and grew up at 48 Rue Keyenveld just a short walk away from one of Brussels’s most expensive boulevards A commemorative plaque highlights her house It’s impossible to miss because there is usually a group of excited girls hanging around outside and the show is running till next February Park life: the feathery denizens of Ixelles ponds Photograph: Joanna van Mulder/The ObserverBut the art in Ixelles isn’t just in this gallery; it really is everywhere Look up at the windows and balconies and you’re likely to spot both art nouveau and art deco features an enormous and striking art deco building dominates the square it is now an arts venue and home to Café Belga – another candidate for the coolest cafe in the world Just beyond it, Ixelles turns leafy and art nouveau mansions form a border along the Etangs d’Ixelles – two large and pretty ponds. It’s ever so slightly like Central Park’s Upper West Side but without any hipsters. Keep walking and you come to what may be the best-kept secret of them all, the Abbaye de la Cambre this ancient abbey and its immaculate gardens could well be the most tranquil place on earth And I suppose that goes for the whole of Ixelles you might want to keep it to yourself or else it’ll be as busy up there as it is in front of that dodgy statue of the weeing boy This is the archive of The Observer up until 21/04/2025. The Observer is now owned and operated by Tortoise Media. Want to explore the best restaurants in the area? You've come to the right place! We present the 6 best restaurants in Ixelles.
