The World Press Photo Exhibition 2024 will be on display for two days next week in Knokke-Heist in addition to the first of several showings of the film Watermark as part of an ongoing photo exposition in the same location.
The Scharpoord Cultural Centre in Knokke-Heist plays host this summer to two major photo exhibitions. From 16 until 18 July, the World Press Photo Exhibition 2024 will continue its worldwide tour with a stop in the coastal town with free admission. The winners of this prestigious photojournalism competition showcase the moments they have captured during the year, generally focusing on pressing issues and promoting social change.
In its 67th year, the World Press Photo Exhibition reviewed more than 61,062 photographs entered by 3,581 photographers from 130 countries, resulting in 24 winners and six honourable mentions.

which "examines the controversial relationship between humanity and water: a basic component of our body
an essential resource for our lives and that of our planet
That makes water the most precious liquid; the new gold."
Burtynsky's abstract photographs used helicopters and drones to capture aerial shots and provide a new perspective on the element
"This photo expo brings you amazement and wonder and leads you from fascination to awareness because the environment is of global importance and just as urgent as our basic needs," the organisers say

The central theme of this documentary is the interaction between humans and water and how one shapes the other
The sprawling 10-country journey offers incredible visuals and thought-provoking subject matter

Astrid Mestdach serves as the councillor for urban planning, culture, events, libraries and heritage in Knokke-Heist. Photo: Knokke Heist
As part of the “Empowering Legal Leaders: Navigating risks and seizing new opportunities” roundtable, organised by the Paperjam Club on Tuesday 22 October, Astrid Mestdach, who serves as the councillor for urban planning, culture, events, libraries and heritage in Knokke-Heist, shares her vision for Knokke-Heist.
What are the emerging risks in the tourism industry that Knokke-Heist is addressing, and how are you adapting to these challenges?
Astrid Mestdach: “One of the biggest risks for Knokke-Heist is the seasonality. As a coastal destination, people typically associate our municipality with nice weather or summer, while it is very important for our local economy to spread visitors over time. That is why we focus on sustainable tourism all year round. We plan our major events, such as Zoute Grand Prix or IRONMAN, just outside the summer in order to extend the season.”
What measures does Knokke-Heist take to ensure effective information governance, particularly regarding tourist data and contracts?
“As a government, we naturally attach great importance to data protection and work in accordance with the GDPR legislation to guarantee the privacy of our visitors.”
“Of course, we handle this data very carefully and it is anonymised and aggregated. In other words, it cannot be traced back to an individual. We also have data from our second home owners and that data would be very popular with advertisers. But of course we will never pass on that data, that is not allowed and not possible. For example, we do use it ourselves to deliver our KH Magazine to their home address, but only if they indicate that they want to receive it.”
“In summary, we are very careful with our customer data and we follow the legal framework. In our organization we have a DPO (data protection officer) who monitors compliance with privacy legislation and is very actively involved in this.”
How is Knokke-Heist integrating modern technologies to improve its legal and administrative operations in the tourism sector?
“Knokke-Heist is certainly taking the necessary steps in this regard. For example, we are already working with certain software applications that simplify our administrative processes. We also notice that many of these applications integrate AI within their systems, which allows us to work and act more efficiently. We recently started using a new CMS system for a website, and you can clearly see how AI is already automatically integrated into that application.”
“For example, we ourselves are already using tools such as the secure version of Chat GPT and Copilot to help us with data analysis and interpretation. So we are certainly fully engaged in all these developments and are keeping a close eye on everything. We are also experimenting and looking specifically at what can help us. But we are also curious about what the coming years will bring.”
Yesterday, USA's Laura Kraut fell off her horse in the warm-up for the 1.60m Rolex Grand Prix in Knokke. The competition was put on a pauze for while until the female rider was transported to the nearest hospital. Meanwhile she has left the hospital. "I am doing fine, thanks for checking in," she reacts.
Also her horse is doing fine. "Nothing is broken, I'm just a little bit hanged up." the female rider explains.
EXPRMNTL is the most important event that has ever been organised for experimental cinema. This amazing festival (five editions between 1949 and 1974), organized in Knokke-le-Zoute in an empty casino between Christmas and New Year, was a key place for experimental film in the critical period of its development, and actually almost the only meeting point for avant-garde filmmakers for years, the place where experimental movements connected.
This programme featuring film screenings, talks and live performances will discuss the history and importance of the festival and will try to bring back some of its spirit.

In several seaside resorts, the construction of beach bars has already started. Officially today is the first day work can commence. In popular Blankenberge and up-market Knokke-Heist the builders are already hard at work. There they hope the beach bars will be ready to open within 2 weeks.
During the warm, sunny days of the recent half-term break, they would have come in handy, but operators had to wait for the official start of the beach bar building season.
Even though it was bitterly cold with a nasty northerly rolling in from a grey North Sea, in Blankenberge they immediately rolled up their sleeves and put grease to their elbows. ‘People are always happy when they see us again,’ explains Jarne De Fauw, manager of the Lilo Beach. ‘They wave from the promenade and wish us good luck.’
‘Winter has lasted long enough. And this is ideal weather to build our beach bars. Last year, we had to do this in the rain. Dry weather makes a big difference for us!’
Most hope to open in as little as two weeks. ‘Today we are mainly busy putting up the fences and marking everything out properly,’ says Dean Dekempe of Sun Beach. ‘And of course, we’re shovelling a lot of sand.’
Blankenberge boasts 13 beach bars or similar establishments, which puts it in 2nd place in terms of the number of beach bars. Without a doubt, the front runner is Knokke-Heist. There, there are no fewer than 24 beach bars.
‘The sun put in an appearance at the start to the construction of our beach bars, children's parks and the first beach cabins in Knokke-Heist,’ says alderman Bert De Brabandere. ‘We can already start to dream of a wonderful summer.’
In the other coastal resorts too, beach bars will gradually appear on the beach. Nine are planned in Ostend, eight in Middelkerke. Zeebrugge, De Haan, Bredene and Nieuwpoort each have 3, Koksijde 2 and De Panne only 1 beach bar.

The 63rd edition of the Cartoon Festival starts in Knokke-Heist on Saturday with the theme Choose Life, featuring art by Belgian and international cartoonists at three locations.
Curator Christophe Floré chose Pieter De Poortere as guest curator and his creation Boerke as a source of inspiration this year. In the thematic exhibition Choose Life, everything revolves around the question: how do we shape our lives? Is it fate, or do our choices play a crucial role?
The cartoonists were inspired by the many aspects of the human existence for this exhibition that "explores the mix of unrest and humour in a world that seems to be becoming increasingly absurd".

“I had a very big aim for my horse for this week
and it was this Grand Prix,” Darragh Kenny said after winning the €500.000 Rolex Grand Prix presented by Audi.
After opting not to come back for the second round in Friday’s big class
saving Balou du Reverton (Cornet Obolensky x Continue) for Sunday’s Grand Prix – all went according to the Irish rider’s plan
he snatched the win from reigning World Champions Simone Blum and DSP Alice (Askari x Landrebell) by 0.48 seconds
“I’ve had a lot of placings in Rolex Grand Prix competitions
but I never won one so it was very important for me to win today
I was fourth in Aachen and Rome as well as third in Geneva,” said the man who also was second in the Rolex Grand Prix of Knokke last year
“I’ve been getting close but not close enough!”
It was no easy task Kenny and the 46 other riders in today’s Rolex Grand Prix presented by Audi were faced with
Italian course designer Uliano Vezzani had built one of his trademark master-mind tracks
and in the end only six pairs managed to deliver clears to move on to the jump-off
“We have the best riders in the world here
it is an amazing show – for me one of the best events of the year – so I knew it was going to be tough,” Nicola Philippaerts – best of the Belgians as fifth placed – said about Vezzani’s demanding course after the Grand Prix.
it was Germany’s Simone Blum and her lovely DSP Alice that set the pace with a lightning fast round in 42.65 seconds – getting an incredible turn back to the Stephex oxer placed on the long-side by the VIP
nor young home hero Nicola Philippaerts could catch up – despite good attempts as the following riders in the ring
Ireland’s Bertram Allen gave it his everything with the scopey Harley vd Bisschop (Dulf van den Bisschop x Coronado)
and came flying into the penultimate upright before giving full gas to the last but still could not match Blum’s time
it looked like it was going to go Blum’s way but Kenny had other plans
He set of determinedly with his impressive Balou du Reventon
Cheered and whistled on by the Knokke-crowds
that had met up in large numbers enjoying the June-sun
Kenny kept on chasing the clock – and when crossing the finish line he could punch his hands in the air: The time showed 42.17 seconds, it was a win
“My horse has been jumping fantastic,” Kenny told after the Grand Prix
“I really wanted to use this week to test a little bit ahead of the European Championships
and answered every question that I asked of him.”
it comes as no surprise that Knokke Hippique is one of Kenny’s favourite venues
absolutely brilliant and the organisation is fantastic!” Kenny – who also was awarded as Leading Rider in the CSI5* with a STX 2 Horse Truck for one year – said.
I knew I had Bertram and Darragh coming after me
I had a feeling I was not fast enough to the second last fence
Alice jumped all her Grand Prix classes clear this year and was first and second – it’s unbelievable,” Blum said about her once-in-a-lifetime horse
I am so proud to have this horse!” she added.
Allen was another rider that was happy about being on the podium
very fast to try and beat these guys so I had to take a bit of risk,” Allen commented on his flyer of an approach to the penultimate upright
“My horse answered all the questions very well
so I am absolutely delighted even with third today!”
After four days of incredible sport at all levels
Event President Stephan Conter was all smiles
“Thank you to our amazing sponsors and partners
Audi and of course Ghelamco and Knokke Heist
I am also so proud of my team for the job they do
I don’t know if they will still need me next year – they do a fantastic job!” Conter said
Conter revealed that everybody will be in for a treat
“It is going to be something exceptional!” he said

Press Release Knokke Hippique – Germany’s Daniel Deusser described his win in the Rolex Grand Prix
presented by Porsche at Knokke Hippique this afternoon as “my greatest victory” and the thousands of spectators enjoying the sunshine of the coastal town of Knokke in Belgium were hard pushed to disagree
riding the Stephex Stables owned Equita van het Zorgvliet
was one of 19 competitors who successfully navigated the first round to go into the jump-off
Ben Maher riding Boomerang set the early target
with a second clear round in a time of 40 seconds
and despite the best efforts of the many who followed him into the arena
no one could come close to this quick pace
But this competition included many of the top riders in the world
and as the final three combinations lined up to enter the arena
Maher must have known that his time would be under threat
who showed that 40 seconds could be beaten when he posted a blistering clear round in 39.39 seconds
who had already enjoyed success on the Friday afternoon when he won the 1.50m class aboard Equita van het Zorgvliet
and the in-form partnership posted a time of 39.32 seconds to race into first place
It was left to the last remaining horse and rider combination to enter the ring to knock Deusser off the top spot
but despite going clear aboard the magnificent bay gelding Nino des Buissonnets
the reigning Olympic Champion Steve Guerdat could only manage a time of 39.96
This is a remarkable win at 5* level for Equita van het Zorgvliet
who a year ago won her first 3* Grand Prix when ridden by Jonna Ekberg for the Stephex Stables
Deusser took over the riding duties on Equita only two months ago
with the plan to campaign the horse at 5* level throughout the summer
and has all the signs of being a partnership to watch for the future
“As a rider you are always hoping for a result like this
This victory is the perfect finish of a perfect show
Even if I am part of the Stephex team I have to congratulate all the team for what they are doing
It is only the second edition but looks already like one of the best shows in the world.”
And commenting about his plans for the future
„It was my last big Grand Prix before the Olympics with Nino
but I am really happy and he looks in a really great shape.” He also added his praise to the organisers of the Knokke Hippique
„Congratulations to Stephan (Conter) and his team plus all the sponsors for such an amazing show.”
This is only the second edition of Knokke Hippique but with the show offering over €570,000 prize money and able to attract many of the world’s Top 10 riders including six Olympic gold medallists
it has quickly established itself as one of the top CSI5* events of the summer
The second show of the year to be organised by the Stephex team, the Brussels Stephex Masters, will take place from 31 August to 4 September – for further information please visit http://stephexmasters.com/

France’s leading lady rider Pénélope Leprevost delivered the only double clear in Saturday evening’s CSI5* Championship of Knokke – powered by Invest Mobile – to take the top honours at Knokke Hippique in Knokke Heist
that included a Garia Golf Cart for the winner
saw clears come sparingly in the first round
only two out of the 35 riders managed to finish without faults over Uliano Vezzani’s first round track that counted a total of thirteen fences that included two combinations
The two that jumped clear – Pénélope Leprevost of France and Romain Duguet of Switzerland – were joined by another six for round two
to total it to eight – with Daniel Deusser of Germany on one single time penalty
France’s Aldrick Cheronnet on two penalties and then Olivier Philippaerts of Belgium
Jaroslaw Skrzyczynski of Poland and Zoe Conter of Belgium on four faults
With generous prize money and World Ranking points at stake
there was no problem motivating the riders returning for the second round under the floodlights
With the riders carrying their faults from the first round forwards
tactics also came into play – and as it would play out it was all about being strategic
who finished on her four faults from the first round and with a time of 46.52 seconds
as next to go Philippaerts caught Kraut’s time when he crossed the finish line in 45.96 seconds aboard Ikker (Ogano Sitte x Up To Date)
With only two time penalties on his record
Cheronnet had the chance to take over the lead
and went for a steady clear on the well-jumping Atlantys By Wisbecq (Argentinus x Darco) only to record one more time penalty – taking over the pole position on a total of three time penalties
and just like Cheronnet he played his cards wisely
A steady clear round on the 10-year-old gelding SX Hildago VG (Quadrillo x Andiamo) over the shortened eight-fence track proved to be good enough for the lead with a single time penalty on the score board carried through from the first round
The first rider on a clean sheet to enter the ring was Duguet on Sherazade du Gevaudan (Tinka’s Boy x Iago C)
and now it was all about repeating the clear from the first round
the vertical into the double fell to the ground and Duguet went down the result list to eventually finish 6th
The 2016 Olympic team gold medallist delivered
and remained ice cold to jump another clear round on the stunning 12-year-old stallion Vagabond de la Pomme (Vigo D Arsouilles Stx x For Pleasure) – taking home the top honours ahead of Deusser and Cheronnet
The five-star classes kicked off in the morning with yet another win for Belgium
this time around it was Pieter Devos that made it to the top of the podium in the 1.45m Tops Jumps Prize – riding Haloubet Hitchcock (Baloubet du Rouet x Heartbreaker)
It was two American ladies that topped the class early on; first Catherine Tyree who later was passed by Lucy Davis who took over the lead aboard Boucheroum (Guidam Sohn x Quick Star) after a lightening fast round over the five fences in the second phase against the clock
the American domination was not to last as Pieter Devos quickly thereafter entered the ring and pushed all competition aside to shave off 1.37 seconds on Davis’ time
Living legend John Whitaker came close to catch home hero Devos
but was still 0.62 seconds behind the winning time
and had to settle for second place on Argento (Arko III x Gasper) – pushing Davis down to third

Proposed offshore island to protect a haunt of Sinatra and Dietrich would be its ruin
It is known affectionately as Belgium’s answer to St Tropez – a town once frequented by Frank Sinatra and Marlene Dietrich and which has inspired the pop art of Keith Haring and surrealism of René Magritte
who painted the walls of the town’s casino
in an attempt to limit the damage to the Belgian coast from rising sea levels
has announced plans for an artificial island of 40 hectares (99 acres) 1.2 kilometres from the sandy beach
been slow to respond to climate change and its coast has suffered severe damage during recent storms
the plan will create a calm channel of water in front of its beach
that travel in and out of the port of Zeebrugge
“We would be an industrial harbour with a kind of open sewer in front of us,” Lippens said
It would be the end of tourism in Knokke-Heist
That is why we are fighting for our lives.”
said the municipality’s tourism revenues of €700m a year would be halved should the plans be approved
The 77-year-old has hired specialist lawyers to fight his corner
The threat of rising waters is not unappreciated by the authorities in Knokke-Heist
and popular with artists since the Belgian painters James Ensor and Alfred Verwee captured its vistas on canvas in the early 19th century
The sea is expected to rise by 30cm by 2050 and 80cm by the end of the century
Storm Dieter brought waves around two metres high crashing onto the front
About €17m was invested in a rebuilding programme
which included the replacement of 1.2m cubic metres of sand

She told the Belgian daily Het Nieuwsblad: “We have explained to Mayor Lippens the plan several times

“Doing nothing is not an option for Knokke,” she added

The Championship of Knokke-Heist was a real thriller
With absolute top riders and equally fantastic horses competing in the 1.50m class the game was on
The competition that was ridden over two rounds had 38 horse-and-rider combinations in the first round of the five-star challenge
Only six of those managed to cross the finish line with zero faults on the scoreboard
But with fifteen riders allowed to return in the second round – carrying over their penalties from the first round – the competition was lifted to an even higher level
Eight pairs entered the sunny Zoute Plage with four faults on their list
Of these combinations Jos Verlooy (BEL) and Jacobien Dwerse Hagen (a-Vite x Querlybet Her) climbed the rankings the most
With a very sharply ridden round and a great final line
the duo earned an overall sixth position in 4/0 – 38,30
starting his second round with Sterrehof’s Edinus (Padinus x Columbus) with just one time fault
He knew that riding a clear round would keep him in the top five of the Championship and chose to the ride a quick but not too risky round
Earning an eventual fifth place in 1/0 – 43,70
American top rider Mclain Ward was the first rider to start his second round with a clean slate
He gave a majestic performance with his very careful jumping mount Contagious (Contagio x For Keeps)
The pair made the task set by course builder Uliano Vezzani (ITA) almost look easy
They finished the second round with a big leap over the final oxer and finished in what would be the second-fastest time in 0/0 – 37,67
the runner-up smiled while he referred to the winner who was last to go
and not winning today only means there is another chance to have a go at it tomorrow.”
Willem Greve (NED) had his eye on the prize with Highway M TN (Eldorado vd Zeshoek x Chellano)
earning oeh’s and ah’s after a sharp rollback to the Rolex vertical and a sprint towards the last Audi oxer the pair finished in fourth place in 0/0 – 38,76
Gregory Wathelet (BEL) and Faut-Il des 7 Vallons (Comme IL Faut 5 x Double Espoir) also made a great effort to earn the Championship title
With only 0,20 seconds over Mclain Ward's time
they slotted into third place in 0/0 – 37,87.
Eduardo Pereira de Menez (BRA) was the final rider of the class and meant business right from the start
Knowing the task at hand he stuck to his original plan and with his magnificent jumping stallion H5 Elvaro (Calvaro F.C
x Heartbreake) snatched the win from Mclain Ward by stopping the timer half a second faster
“The credits really go to the organization of this show and to my horse
the winner commented after the prize giving ceremony.
“I know that when I make no mistakes myself
I have a good chance with this horse to do well
In both rounds everything went like I planned it
That does not guarantee a win but that is a great bonus of course
With my team we have altogether 25 horses here
It is great that they can jump over three arenas at all levels
And then to end the day with a class like this and even become winner of the Championship is excellent.”
