Belgian data center firm LCL Data Centers has powered up three wind turbines in Belgium with a combined capacity of 6.9MW
which cost an estimated €13 million ($13.64 million)
Each turbine will have a capacity of 2.3MW and
will contribute to LCL’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030
said: “One of the KPIs that we included in our first sustainability report
was to produce 40 percent of the energy we consume by 2030
LCL wants to link energy generation to its production
The power from the turbines will be fed directly into the grid
aligning with LCL’s strategy of building new generation rather than purchasing existing capacity through long-term supply agreements
LCL links its climate neutrality to its commitment to the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)
The SBTi initiative targets a 42 percent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and a commitment to offset the remaining emissions through sustainable projects
such as replacing diesel fuels with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)
In October 2022, LCL announced its first HVO deployment at LCL Brussels-West in Aalst
where the company invested in six new 2.25MVA generators
Last year, LCL completed the expansion of a solar park at the LCL Wallonia One data center in Gembloux
The expansion added 1,300 photovoltaic panels to the existing 2,000
increasing the park's overall capacity from 1MW to 1.6MW and covering 10 percent of the data center's energy needs
LCL said that it hopes to deploy heat recovery technology on the site to potentially use excess heat from Wallonia One to warm nearby facilities
LCL currently operates five data centers in the Belgian market. Last April, the company announced a €30 million ($32.6m) investment into the expansion of its Brussels-North facility
The company said the design of its new facility has been certified as Tier III by Uptime Institute
The facility will also prioritize sustainability with the data center operator upgrading cooling installations and considering alternative cooling methods

Text description provided by the architects. In this house in the suburbs of Antwerp, weathering steel lamellae are in command. Inside as well as outside they define the spaces, they mark out the boundaries where needed and open again when suited. They glow in the rusty evening sun and give a twinkling show of shadows. They embrace and protect the environment of the residents of this extraordinary house. You can feel them everywhere.
The concept of this house is based on the use of the Corten steel lamellae. It's not only used to design the building, but it also shapes the landscape and defines the interior.
© Luc RoymansA far-reaching detailing was needed to enable the use of the lamellae as cladding (welded on a perforated plate)
as the single lamellae around the garden (fixed on a invisible special structure)
as the rusty floor around the ginkgo tree (chips from the waste of the perforated plates).Note: This project was originally published on 3 November

stick to your last - a saying that we usually mean in a negative way
We should rather stick to the things we are familiar with
Much less often do we think of this as positive encouragement: we should reflect on our strengths and play to them
This is precisely the concept pursued by the Van Uytsel Tuincentrum in Kontich
and of the Van Uytsel family business in general
has always been and still is: plants as far as the eye can see
from the size of a cup to the height of a man
green goods are the focal point of the entire store
while the remaining assortment plays a clearly subordinate role
The centre in northern Belgium was founded in 1976 by Jan and Frans Van Uytsel
who are both still actively involved in the store
"They both come from an agricultural background
Frans is also still very well known and respected by the customers," reveals son Ben Van Uytsel in conversation with diy
What started out as a small B2C flower nursery with sales has now grown into a modern garden centre with around 20,000 m² of retail area - it was only in 2021 that the building was extended from seven to eleven "arches" to create even more space for the wide range of plants
the Van Uytsel can be divided into three areas
On the left is the entrance area as well as an adjoining café - which opened back in 1996 - and a cut flower station
which offers freshly made bouquets and arrangements as part of the range and prepares them according to customer wishes
Also located there are a small pet assortment and plant pots - the self-defined motto at Van Uytsel is "Everything for home and garden"
these sections in their entirety are insignificant when compared with the assortment of herbs
vegetables and flowering plants for indoor use in the left wing
The latter in particular visually dominate the area
In the middle section there are - apart from decorative items - mainly green plants in abundance
In the outer right section is the outdoor department: greenery
flowering and fruit plants for outdoors await alongside the selection of trees and the soil range…

Bruker Presents SkyScan Micro-CT Product Line for 3D X-Ray Imaging in Materials Research and Preclinical Studies
Bruker microCT presents its new product line of advanced
high-resolution micro computed tomography (CT) systems for three-dimensional (3D) X-ray imaging following the recent acquisition of SkyScan N.V.
Bruker microCT instruments can be configured for numerous applications in materials research and in the life sciences
including in vivo preclinical animal imaging
new devices such as micro-sensors and cardio-stimulators
The Bruker microCT products can be equipped with sample stages for in-situ scanning under compression and tension
The various product groups and products are described below in more detail
Compact and versatile Micro-CT imagers in which the sample is rotated between the X-ray source and the camera:
• The SkyScan 1172TM represents a new generation of micro-CT systems
enabling both the sample stage and the X-ray camera to move automatically during magnification adjustment
allows an unprecedented combination of spatial resolution
sample size accommodation and scanning speed
• The SkyScan 1173 TM is a high-energy micro-CT scanner for large and dense objects
It includes a newly developed 130kV X-ray source
a flat panel sensor with special protection by a lead-glass fiber optic window for long lifetime under high energy X-ray exposure
and a precision object manipulator for heavy objects with an embedded micro-positioning stage
small footprint and maintenance-free operation make this micro-CT scanner an ideal solution for scientific research
The scanner can run from any desktop or portable computer requiring just one USB port and FireWire input
High-resolution 3D scanners with submicron spatial resolution:
• The SkyScan 2011 TM system was introduced as the first revolutionary laboratory nano-CT scanner with spatial resolution in the range of a few hundreds of nanometers
This spatial resolution in terms of volume is equal to or better than that of synchrotron tomography
For the first time true sub-micron tomographic imaging is available in a laboratory instrument
• The SkyScan SEM-CT TM kit is a device that allows the generation of 3D images using any scanning electron microscope
While a standard scanning electron microscope only images the sample surface
the simple addition of a SkyScan SEM-CT opens full access to the third dimension of the material’s internal micro-world without sample cutting
Hyphenated 3D scanner which adds true 3D chemical XRF analysis capability to high-resolution micro-tomography:
• The SkyScan 2140 TM micro-CT/micro-XRF combines in one instrument a micro-CT scanner
which provides high-resolution morphological information and absorption correction maps for chemical analysis
with a full-field 3D micro-XRF scanner for reconstruction of the 3D chemical composition inside the sample
Advanced Micro-CT systems where the X-ray source and the camera are rotated around the object
forin-vivo scanning of small laboratory animals like mice and rats
as well as for ex-vivo scanning of other types of samples:
• The SkyScan 1176 TM is a state-of-the-art high-resolution low-dose X-Ray scanner for in-vivo 3D-reconstruction with detail detectability (voxel size) down to 9 microns inside small laboratory animals (rats
It allows non-invasive reconstruction of any cross section through the animal body and conversion of reconstructed datasets into realistic 3D-images
plus calculation of internal morphometric parameters
• The SkyScan 1178 TM is a high-throughput
The animal bed holder is interchangeable for multimodality imaging with other imaging technologies like PET
All SkyScan micro-CT systems are equipped with the proprietary software package for 3D reconstruction
2D/3D image analysis and realistic 3D visualization:
• SkyScan NRecon TM high speed volumetric reconstruction software uses the set of acquired angular projections to create a set of virtual slices through the scanned object
The GPU-accelerated reconstruction process can optionally be speeded up by a cluster of several computers connected by a gigabit network
• SkyScan Data Viewer TM software displays reconstructed results as a slice by slice movie or as three orthogonal sections centered at any selected point inside the reconstructed space with possibility to rotate and resample the dataset to any alternative orientation
• SkyScan CT-analyser TM (CT-An) software allows 2D and 3D quantitative analysis of reconstructed volumes
flexible and programmable image processing tools allow a wide range of segmentation
enhancement and measurement functions for analysis with flexibility to create batch processing by custom build task-lists and to create user plug-ins
• SkyScan CT-volume TM (CT-Vol) software provides
flexible and rich in features with a wide range of options for 3D presentations of micro-CT results including surface rendering with the possibility to export into CAD programs
• SkyScan CT-Voxel TM (CT-Vox) software advances further 3D visualization capability

Dutch software firm AFAS announced plans to move all of its employees to a four-day work week starting next year
The roughly 700 employees will continue to receive the same wages
and their workday will remain at eight hours
the office will close on Fridays and everyone who works for AFAS will have a 'development day,'" the company said
This development day is not meant for improving skills at the workplace
or take part in any activity as they see fit
"Employees who already work four days will be compensated
The software company does not plan to recruit more people as a result of this introduction," the company said
AFAS claims to be the first large employer in the Netherlands to implement a four-day work week
and hopes to inspire other businesses to do the same
The company stressed that they will still have customer service teams available for their clients on Fridays
The company generates annual revenue of nearly 290 million euros from just over 13,000 clients
Their software generates payslips for millions of people in the Netherlands
AFAS has won the Great Place to Work prize as the best employer in the Netherlands among businesses with over 250 staff members
it also won the title of best employer in Europe
AFAS currently employees 681 people at its four offices in Leusden and the Belgian city of Kontich
"We are the first large company in the Netherlands to introduce the four-day working week in this way
and we naturally realize that this is not feasible for every company
But we hope this is the start of a movement
about being an attractive employer and about a new vision on work," said AFAS CEO Bas van der Veldt in a statement
The software firm brags that sick leave levels were below 2.5 percent last year
The firm's workforce is currently made up primarily of men
with women accounting for a third of the workforce
The company said it is working towards a goal of even gender representation
We seem to be in a rat race and don't always get to what really matters in life
there is more time for this," said Van der Veldt
It is important for us that we automate administrative work
A man from Kontich (Antwerp Province) has been sentenced to 7 years in prison and remains under the supervision of the judicial authorities and a sentencing court for a further 10 years
The 27-year-old had approached some 40 underage girls via the social media messaging app Snapchat
He then pressurised them to forward nude images of themselves using a game
He also met up with one 14-year-old girl and raped her
possession of images of child sexual abuse
In addition to the custodial sentence he will also have to pay the victims tens of thousands of euros in damages
The court ruling spoke of "totally reprehensible acts" and the fact that the man again sought contact with minors while he was already under electronic surveillance in anticipation of his trial was also heavily condemned
but the court considered that insufficient to ensure that he would not re-offend
the man tried to obtain nude images of some 40 underage girls
Participants in the game have to complete tasks to reach a higher level
It all started pretty innocently by sending a picture of
but gradually the assignments became more sexual
He then asked girls to take nude pictures or perform sexual acts on themselves
he threatened to come to their homes or make previously sent images public
some 40 victims in Belgium and the Netherlands came into view
The then 26-year-old man lied about his age and said that he too was a minor
It did not stop with online games and threats
"The accused agreed to meet a vulnerable 14-year-old victim
In late 2020 he promised her four packets of cigarettes and had then come to the youth facility where she was staying
He forced her to have unsafe sex in a vehicle in the car park in exchange for the cigarettes," the prosecutor said
He returned to the youth facility several months later to give her sex toys
She was forced to use them and take pictures of them
the girl obeyed and provided him with photos
After the girl worked up the courage to report it
the accused was arrested in the summer of 2021
He spent about five weeks in jail and was then allowed to serve his pre-trial detention at home equipped with an electronic tag
It was not long before the game on Snapchat started again and he requested nude photos
