The city of Kortrijk in Belgium is working with local venues to develop a step-by-step plan to ensure a safer nightlife for women
The initiative comes in the wake of a spiking scandal that has shocked the community and attracted national political attention
Mayor Ruth Vandenberghe met with bar owners from the city's nightlife district on Thursday
just days after five people were arrested on suspicion of drugging women - commonly referred to as 'spiking'
Among those arrested are the owners of two well-known establishments: De Geverfde Vogel and the now bankrupt Café Patron
Young women must always be able to go out in safety," said Mayor Vandenberghe
but the behaviour of a few individuals has damaged the entire sector
We are determined to work together to restore confidence.”
The case involves at least 41 alleged victims and has provoked strong reactions in the Belgian federal parliament
Justice minister Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) called the events "unacceptable" and vowed to take full responsibility for public safety
"A just society does not stop at punishing the perpetrators - we must also recognise
protect and support the victims," she told parliament on Thursday
Home Affairs minister Bernard Quintin (MR) also issued a strong condemnation
calling for tougher sentences and better support for victims
The most passionate intervention came from N-VA parliamentary leader Axel Ronse
He rejected political recriminations and stressed the need for cross-party unity
Let us stand united - left and right - against these despicable individuals and do everything possible to track them down and prevent further damage"

World champion eases to victory in Kortrijk
Fem van Empel made a winning return to Cyclocross in c on Saturday
winning the Exact Cross by a comfortable margin.
The world champion went clear from the field on a sand section during the first lap
Her winning margin was ultimately 47 seconds
ahead of Marlon Norbert Riberolle in second and her Crelan-Corendon teammate Inge van der Heijden in third
Van Empel had preceded the race with a three-week training camp
and expressed satisfaction with her form coming out of it in a post-race interview.
I was really excited for my comeback after three weeks of training
starting with tomorrow’s World Cup opener in Antwerp
Van Empel isn’t getting ahead of herself just yet..
she agreed when asked if her form was better now after the camp
But we will see in the upcoming weeks how it goes.”
Van Empel initially went clear with Van der Heijden and Alicia Franck during the first clap
before her superior speed on foot to gain a gap over the sand section.
Van der Heijden was joined by Norbert Riberolle
and the two managed to hold off the rest of the pack
Van Empel’s lead grew steadily throughout the race
from four seconds after the first of the race’s six laps
25 after the third and 42 after the fourth.
From then she appeared to ease up a little
perhaps with an eye on the first World Cup meet of the season taking place tomorrow in Antwerp.

Authorities in Kortrijk have arrested five people - including two bar owners - in connection with the drugging and sexual assault of at least 41 women in the city's nightlife district
The victims reported being unknowingly drugged with ketamine between 2021 and 2023
often waking up in hotels or at home with no memory of the previous night
Prosecutors say the suspects - who include bartenders
bar owners and bouncers - acted as a loosely coordinated group
They allegedly exchanged information on how to spike drinks and what substances to use
Victims consistently described drinks that tasted of amaretto
Toxicology tests confirmed the presence of ketamine in several cases
Two of the arrested suspects were well-known figures in the Kortrijk bar scene
Locals say the incidents have devastated the area's nightlife
with most bars now closed and regulars staying away
but the reality is worse than expected," said Dieter De Clerq
a nearby bar owner whose staff also reported being targeted
Defence lawyers deny the existence of a coordinated network and insist on the presumption of innocence
The names of some suspects have been circulated on social media by far-right figures
raising legal concerns about a "trial by media"
One lawyer said: "There is no evidence of guilt yet
Let the investigation take its course."
condemned the crimes as "repulsive" and promised increased security measures for nightlife venues
Lawyers for the victims welcomed the progress in the case and called for full confessions to bring closure
"The scale of the case is disturbing but not surprising," said one representative
"Now it's time for justice."

Iserbyt takes win ahead of Niels Vandeputte in second
Eli Iserbyt claimed a third career Eact Cross Kortrijk title on Saturday
combining well with his Pauwels Sauzen–Bingoal teammate Michael Vanthourenhout to claim the victory
The two riders attacked in tandem on several occasions during the first half of the race
seeking to work over the Alpecin-Deceuninck pair of Niels Vandeputte and Jente Michels.
Iserbyt made his winning move on the sith of the race’s nine laps
countering an attack from Vanthourenhout just after Michels had brought him back
Opening an immediate gap as Michels hesitated to respond
and soloed the rest of the race to seal the win
Vandeputte and Michels remained together at the end
with Vandeputte taking second-place in the sprint ahead of Vanthourenhout in third
“It feels very good,” were Iserbyt’s words at the finish
when asked how it felt to take what was his second win of the season.
“I think the most important period of the season is coming with the World Cup
It’s good for the head to get a victory.”
Iserbyt had made his first committed move on the third lap
using the sand section to counter a move from Vanthourenhout and go clear out front
his momentum stalled as he crashed going round a corner
Vanthourenhout attacked again on the fifth lap
gaining a lead of a few seconds and forcing Vandeputte and Michels to chase
It was when Michels eventually managed to bring that move back that Iserbyt made what turned out to be the race-winning move
from 13 seconds at the end of the sixth lap
Iserbyt is now looking ahead to tomorrow and Antwerp
But I hope to do a good race tomorrow as well.”

This means that 19-year-old Ebbe De Vlaeminck
who made his first ever appearance for the side coming off the bench at the weekend
With that victory over Sint Truiden Kortrijk have given themselves a lifeline
They can capitalise on this at the weekend when they face a Beerschot side that have nothing to play for
With both Cercle Brugge and Sint Truiden facing off against each other as well
there is a high chance a win for Kortrijk could see them really claw back some of the gap between the sides
Bernd Storck returns to Kortrijk for second spell as side eye another miraculous escape from relegation | OneFootballGet Belgian & Dutch Football News
Kortrijk have moved quickly to replace Yves Vanderhaeghe as head coach

The club have once again turned to a previous head coach
with German Bernd Storck returning for a second spell
Storck helped save the side from relegation
the situation was certainly not as dire as it is now
He takes over the side in second bottom of the Pro League
The sides best hope of survival looks set to be trying to finish 14th and fight it out in the relegation play off match against the side that wins the Challenger Pro League play-offs
They will firstly need to close the five point gap to Sint Truiden
so will have to face three other teams in the relegation play downs

Vincent Tan’s Kortrijk fire Yves Vanderhaeghe just two months into his third spell at the club | OneFootballGet Belgian & Dutch Football News
Kortrijk have announced that head coach Yves Vanderhaeghe has been fired
Vanderhaeghe had only joined the side two months ago
taking over from Freyr Alexandersson who had been fired following a poor run of form
This was Vanderhaeghe’s third spell at the club and certainly the worst of the lot
The side picked up just two points in that time
although how much of that can be attributed to Vanderhaeghe is questionable
A new man will take some convincing to come in with the situation so dire
Their only hope appears to be in trying to finish third from bottom and qualify for the play-off against a second tier side
They will have to close the gap to Sint Truiden to do this and then hope they can perform well in the play-offs
Yet the side are struggling to score and defensively haven’t been able to keep other teams out

CategoriesCategoriesEnglishJUSTICE, SOCIETYSeveral cases of drink spiking and rape in Kortrijk15 November 2024
Eleven women have recently filed complaints about drink spiking and rape in the nightlife of Kortrijk
Drink spiking involves secretly adding a drug to an alcoholic drink without the owner of the drink knowing
seven women have filed complaints after being drink spiked in the nightlife of Kortrijk
The victims woke up the next day without knowing what had happened
They realised this because bruises could be seen all over their bodies and they even suffered from vaginal and anal bleeding
the West Flanders public prosecutor's office reported
The charges clearly set something in motion
as on Friday four new reports came in from women who declared that a narcotic had been put in their drinks in Kortrijk
Most of the victims in Kortrijk were drugged in the city's nightlife district
but narcotics were also put in drinks in other youth pubs
It mostly involved an almond-flavoured shot
Toxicologist Jan Tytgat of KU Leuven university explained to newspaper De Morgen that three substances are used for drink spiking: benzodiazepines or sleep aids
Hair analyses show that the latter was used to drug the victims in Kortrijk
it’s very difficult to notice if something has been put in your drink because the substances are often colourless and tasteless,” said Tytgat
as was the case in Brussels a few years ago.” He advises to always hold on to your drink yourself and let it be touched only by other people that you can trust 200 per cent
Four suspects were already arrested in Kortrijk
Two of them were in the meantime released with conditions
One already had an ankle bracelet for previous offences
The other suspect was released without conditions after interrogation

Kortrijk’s Algerian magician Abdelkahar Kadri deserves a summer transfer | OneFootballGet Belgian & Dutch Football News
Kortrijk’s key man Abdelkahar Kadri put in another man of the match performance for the side on Sunday afternoon as he kept their slim chances of Pro League survival alive
The 24-year-old scored one and provided his seventh assist of the season as the side beat Sint Truiden 3-0 away from home
In 27 games this season Kadri has four goals and seven assists
This is his fourth season with Kortrijk and it really should be his last
In the past the midfielder has been linked with the likes of Ajax and Club Brugge
yet he somehow has remained in Belgium with a struggling Kortrijk side
Last season he scored six goals and grabbed four assists to help Kortrijk beat the drop and this season he is once again doing what he can to help them remain a top flight club
With one year remaining on his contract however
regardless of whether or not the club survive
One big reason is that he could then force his way into the Algerian national team for the upcoming AFCON in Morocco
and on both occasions the competition took place in North Africa
Kadri has already been capped by the national team a handful of times but his most recent appearance came back in 2023
Finding a bigger club to perform at should help his cause
Kortrijk should also look to cash in while they still can. Kadri is highly unlikely to sign a new deal beyond 2026, making this summer the last one in which the club can bring in some money for him. Other sides in Belgium should certainly be interested, but Kadri himself should look to join one of those currently in the top six. Ajax could also return for him in the summer if they still see him fitting into their plans
as he will certainly be cheaper than he was a few seasons ago

In a groundbreaking test flight, a drone successfully completed a 4 km journey between Residential Care Center De Zon in Bellegem
and General Hospital Groeninge in Kortrijk
conducted beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS) of the pilot
marks a significant milestone in the TETRA project ‘Medical Drone Supplies’ (MEDROS)
led by VIVES University of Applied Sciences
The MEDROS project aims not only to explore but also to implement the possibilities of drone technology for transporting medical goods within the Flemish healthcare sector as well as to integrate it into the entire healthcare logistics chain
This flight provided concrete evidence that the rapid and efficient exchange of medical samples is possible through drones
project partner KU Leuven is conducting a comparison between the quality of blood samples transported by drone and those transported by road
The drone flight partially took place within the geozone of Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport
where strict safety regulations apply to drone flights
This test is unique: it is the first time that a drone has flown beyond the pilot’s line of sight in this geozone without the need to interrupt other air traffic
with real-time remote monitoring from ADLC’s operations control room
The flight was closely monitored by a team of experts
and the collected data will be analysed to formulate further recommendations
“We are very pleased with the results of this test flight,” says Joke Van Vooren
Lecturer and Project Staff Member Aviation at VIVES
“It demonstrates that drones can be a valuable addition to our current transport methods
especially in emergencies where speed is crucial
This is an important step toward more efficient and faster transport of medical goods within the healthcare sector.”
we are open to innovation in the healthcare sector
The MEDROS project gave us the opportunity to contribute to the technical and economic aspects of drone transportation in healthcare
Although it had already been demonstrated that this is possible
we also find it important to know that this can be done safely and that the quality of the goods can be guaranteed,” states Brian Desplinter
“The successful completion of this medical transport flight is a testament to the versatility and potential of drone delivery services
We are proud to use our experience to contribute to the healthcare sector by offering an efficient
convenient and sustainable alternative to current means of transportation,” adds Rayan Quintaes
Co-founder & Managing Director at ADLC
“This test flight perfectly illustrates how our BVLOS framework can ensure the safety and efficiency of drone operations
It is a significant step toward the integration of drone technology in critical sectors such as healthcare,” comments Didier Decaestecker

formerly a commercial floor in a residential complex
designed originally to hold a large concept store
Now it has become a new shared creative office where no one claims their “own” space
Link Lab was created as a platform for several creative studios – Dencity
and Stay Studio– which consist of urban planners
The different agencies joined to find a spacious floor in the heart of the town of Kortrijk and chose this former commercial space
This entire floor was chosen because of its floor plan
the external staircase for separate access to the residential complex
and the possibility to have a shared use for the new offices
Link Lab was also conceived as a place to put on architecture workshops and organize networking events and conferences
The commercial space atmosphere was preserved as far as possible
Some parts of the walls and ceiling were covered in spray plaster to create unity and heighten the space’s perception
Building systems such as ventilation ducts and other pipes were maintained and left visible in order to give the spaces a sense of continuity
The furnishing is in contrast with the open space/industrial atmosphere
a selection of high-quality and fine materials including patterned veneers
The contrast gives the platform elegant boldness and a distinctive look
in which each type of client of each creative agency can see themselves
Though there are no divisions and private areas
minimal delimited areas were needed – essential for privacy during workshops and meetings
A solution was adopted with a unique aesthetic with doors and glazed walls recovered from greenhouses

Five suspects have been arrested in the investigation into the spiking of drinks in the nightlife district of the West Flemish city of Kortrijk
Those detained include the landlords of three bars
One of these was released after questioning
The spiking of drinks involves mixing drugs or medication into the victim’s drink in order to then rob
The investigation has been ongoing since October 2024
It began after in the space of a year 7 women had reported that their drinks had been spiked while they were on nights out in Kortrijk’s nightlife district
13 more women reported that they had suffered the same fate when they had visited bars in the centre of Kortrijk
In a statement the public prosecutor's office said that “The investigation concerns serious offences”
The five suspects are linked to at least 41 female victims of offences committed between December 2021 and December 2024
sexual assault and the deliberate administration of harmful substances
“Their modus operandi is very similar: victims were allegedly given a drink
after which they woke up the next morning and could not remember anything.” VRT News sources report that in most cases ketamine was added to the drink
This is a hallucinogenic drug that is known as ‘special K’
Two suspects are due to appear before an examining magistrate later today (Wednesday 26 March)
two suspects are yet to be questioned by the police and one suspect was allowed to leave after questioning
The latter are all but mathematically down
but will be able to play spoiler against the other three teams
Cercle had the hardest game on paper against a top six side in Anderlecht
They fell behind early and could never quite get the equaliser
despite the fact that if they had managed to secure a point they would have swapped places with Dender and been guaranteed to play Pro League football next season
and faced an OH Leuven side who would have switched places with them if they had managed to do so
they fell behind to a fantastic strike from Siebe Schrijvers and ended up losing 3-2
They will certainly be frustrated with some of the decisions that went against them
with the deciding penalty being quite a controversial decision
by that point they had already been down to 10 men for 20 or so minutes after Rein Van Helden was sent off
The bottom four now looks like this. Cercle Brugge are ‘top’ of the mini league with a one point advantage over Sint Truiden
They then have a gap of five points to Kortrijk
who kept their slim hopes of survival alive with a win over top six side Gent
Finishing first in the mini group means survival
while finishing second would see that side face off against the side who win the second tier’s play off system

I think this was a better game for us,” Erol began
“We had more of the ball in the first half
Then in the second we didn’t have it as much
but we also had a lot of young players in the team
I liked how we came out from their high press and got some chances immediately
but we still have to work a lot before the start of the season
I’m still not satisfied with the finishing percentage
"We will have more difficult friendly matches ahead
and we have to see whether we can do it against stronger teams.”
Several senior players got more pre-season minutes under their belt
who played in a slightly different role against the Belgian outfit
“We used Aaron as a second number six alongside [Manolis] Siopis
we tried having him dictate more of the game with his passing range - that allowed David [Turnbull] to play a little bit higher
and today we saw that we can use Aaron in a different way sometimes
“Aaron hasn’t had much of a summer holiday
He trained a lot to be ready for this pre-season
he is doing everything well and we have to manage his playing time in order to protect him and be ready for the next games
but we always talk about that and talk with the physios
Hopefully we can use him more this season than last season.”
with the gaffer confident that the attacking midfielder can hit the ground running this season
and it’s important for him also to be fit for the whole season
“He still has to work on his issues; he wants to be everywhere
so we have to control his game better from the position that we want to have him
Erol concluded by explaining how his side will spend the next few days ahead of our next friendly match against Penybont on Tuesday night
“We have a lot of games coming up,” he concluded
I want to see my players use what we give them in training during a match
because the best training you can get is a game
we can see in the games how we’re solving these problems.”
