New York (WWNY) - A barn fire over the weekend is being described as devastating by the owners
It happened Sunday night around 9 o’clock at the Leuze Dairy Farm on Elm Ridge Road in the town of Philadelphia
Co-owner Matt Leuze says the fire is a huge hit to business
He says the fire left them with about one-third of what they had
Leuze says cleanup won’t begin until at least Thursday
when the insurance company comes out to do its investigation
he believes damages could reach between $2 million and $3 million
Leuze’s new DCR 1048i OCV sensor combines 1D/2D code reading with Optical Character Verification (OCV)
enhancing quality control in industrial automation
Vision sensors are the ‘eyes of industrial automation’
That is because the devices enable machines to see and interpret their surroundings
Anyone looking for a particularly powerful sensor for print quality verification can now find what they need in the DCR 1048i OCV from Leuze: It can read 1D/2D codes within one application and also check quality using the OCV process
This makes it possible to reliably determine whether the best-before date
batch or other printed information is present
Users can teach the vision sensor for OCV print quality verification quickly and easily
All users need to do is present it with a reference image of the optimum print
The DCR 1048i OCV then reliably detects defective printing – for example due to
products recognized as defective can be rejected
The DCR 1048i OCV offers an efficient and flexible solution for production processes
flexibility and usability are what count when it comes to image processing sensor technology for industrial automation
Simple Vision sensors meet these requirements
They are as easy to operate as optical sensors
plus they are as powerful as camera systems
The Sensor People from Leuze offer this concept as a quick and straightforward introduction to vision technology

Sensor technology from Leuze makes an important contribution to an efficient and safe production line process at BMW Group Plant Leipzig. With sensor expertise for high-voltage batteriesThe site produces both combustion engine and electric models in parallel
E-mobility requires high-voltage batteries to supply the BMW Group's electric cars or hybrid vehicles with the necessary drive energy
The automotive group also manufactures these on site
Sensor technology from Leuze makes an important contribution to an efficient and safe production line process
implemented by Schaeffler Special Machinery
the Schaeffler Group’s mechanical engineering company.A robot places the cells removed from a large load carrier (GLT) onto the conveyor belt
horizontally installed switching light curtains from the CSL series detect whether the cells are positioned correctly. It all starts with the cellThree successive production steps are required from the first component to the finished high-voltage battery
module production and finally assembly is a high-voltage battery ready for use as an electric vehicle’s energy supply
Precision and reliable processes are essential at every step
Leuze supports this with sensor solutions in cell coating and module production
Cell coating is the first step in high-voltage battery production
Each battery module consists of several cells
These are delivered to BMW in large load carriers (GLT)
So that the GLTs can be unloaded automatically by robot
a Leuze MLC safety light curtain secures the danger zone to prevent people from entering
Muting ensures that only the GLT can pass through
The robot always unloads 16 cells at the same time and places them on a conveyor belt
Leuze CSL switching light curtains detect whether the cells are positioned correctly
“The switching light curtains particularly suitable for monitoring large detection fields as they are easy to install
configure and far more cost effective than image-based systems” explains Jürgen Schweiß
KAM-Automotive and Safety Application Specialist at Leuze
High-gloss surfacesDiffuse sensors from Leuze are implemented at different points: “Sensors mounted on the belt detect the presence and correct position of the cells
If they are present and correctly positioned
the process continues,” says Jürgen Schweiß
The advantage of the PRK 25C series sensors used here is that they can detect the high-gloss surface of the cells with absolute reliability and can installed even in confined spaces due to their small physical size
Despite its small size the sensor has an operating range of 16 meters
Another advantage is that the sensors can be easily adjusted for sensitivity and alignment due to their bright light spot
A compact approach to safetySensor technology from Leuze keeps an eye on every aspect of cell coating: Laser diffuse reflection sensors from the HT46CL series detect the individual cells and control the conveyor – with maximum detection reliability thanks to background suppression
they are discharged through a Leuze MLC safety light curtain
Advantages of Leuze light curtains: They not only score points with their high resolution
protective field height and operating range
as Jürgen Schweiß emphasizes: “With light curtains
a compact design and short safety distances are also important
This allows them to be easily integrated into tight installation situations.”
Perfectly positionedLeuze laser diffuse reflection light scanners also monitor the unloading of the cells from a GLT into a module line from Thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering
Each cell also receives a “heat shield” – a protective heat insulation – which is pressed onto the long sides
Robots rotate the cells into the desired position on a circular machine
Sensors from Leuze also provide support here: PRK 25 retro-reflective photoelectric sensors detect the presence of the objects
The heat shield process runs in parallel at two stations in order to achieve a high throughput time
From stacking to the moduleIn “stacking”
as experts call the stacking of several cells to form a battery module
several cells are placed next to each other and a pressure plate is attached to each end
PRK 25C sensors from Leuze detect the height and presence of the cells and recognize whether the tool carriers are closed correctly
Sensors are also used when placing the cell contact system (ZKS) on the module
A machine lifts the entire module so that the coating on the cell base can be checked: “Here
Leuze sensors provide support for height detection and at stop positions” says Schweiß
Everything in syncLeuze sensors perform important tasks in the cell coating line and module production at the BMW Group plant in Leipzig: They reliably detect objects and also meet high requirements
such as the detection of high-gloss surfaces
safety technology from Leuze ensures seamless safety on machines and systems
The Sensor People thus contribute to efficient processes in the automotive industry and are always on hand to support system operators in the design and implementation of sensor and safety solutions

The farm’s co-owner, Matt Leuze, told reporters that the fire was a major setback for the business
stating it has lost about two-thirds of its herd of dairy cattle
expected to amount to damages ranging from $2 million to $3 million
Cleanup efforts had been delayed until today while the insurance company conducts an investigation into the cause of the fire
While farm fires can be caused by various factors
or spontaneous combustion of hay or bedding
investigators have not yet determined what led to this particular blaze
Other deadly and destructive events have impacted agriculture in New York state in recent months
“My grandparents and uncle are hands down

Westhill coach Mike Leuze started the varsity program at the school in 2001
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Lindsay Kramer | lkramer@syracuse.comSyracuse
-- After building the Westhill boys lacrosse program from the ground up into a Section III and state title contender
coach Mike Leuze has decided to walk away from that position
said he is retiring to spend more time watching his son
Leuze coached the Warriors to three sectional titles and two state championship games
He said he knew this would be his last year but didn’t tell his players until the season was over
“It’s tough to watch your kids (Jordan) while you’re coaching
The district has not yet hired Leuze’s replacement
but assistant coach Rocky Garofalo is a likely candidate
Leuze played lacrosse at Jordan-Elbridge and then SUNY Cortland
In 1997 he started a club team at Westhill and took it to the varsity level in 2001
“I think I was the only person in the district who had a lacrosse background,” he said
“(There were) a lot of kids that never played before
but we were able to get a lot of great kids.”
The program won its first sectional crown in 2018 and then reached the state Class C title game
The Warriors earned sectional championships in 2021 and 2022
making a return trip to the state championship contest in the latter season
“It’s always been a true pleasure coaching,” Leuze said
“I’m going to miss the families and the kids
I’ve heard horror stories about other places

non-stopLeuze's retro-reflective photoelectric sensor meets the most stringent requirements for reliability
robustness, and hygiene - and it's for this reason Leuze's sensor and application expertise has long been used by Dinkelacker
Beer lovers in South West Germany are familiar with these traditional brands: Dinkelacker
All these regional beer specialties are brewed by Dinkelacker
The family brewery has been around since 1888
And it is still based there today.Indispensable sensor technologyDinkelacker uses technology from Leuze at almost every station along its beer bottling line
"The sensors must withstand severe vibrations and frequent cleaning processes," says Florian Fahr
Head of Technology at Dinkelacker. Only selected sensor solutions can rise to the challenge
retro-reflective photoelectric sensors of the Leuze PRK series were installed here
These are particularly well suited for applications in the beverage industry
The metal housing of the optical sensors is resistant," says Andreas Eberle
Local Industry Manager Packaging at Leuze. Furthermore
the devices detect even highly transparent objects such as bottles and glossy plastic crates.Material flow without jamming or collisionsThe Leuze sensors are installed at various points along the filling installation
"The PRK optical sensors on the individual conveyor sections detect pallets
beer crates or even bottles," explains Frank Karle
Head of Electrical Workshop at Dinkelacker
"Thus the speed of the conveyor belts is automatically regulated to prevent jamming and collisions." In the barrel filling section
Two new robots support the employees: they lift the empty or full barrels and place them on the conveyor belt or on pallets
Leuze multiple light beam safety devices of type MLD secure the work area against access from outside. Two PRK sensors which are arranged crosswise in front of each of the robots detect an incoming pallet
which bridges the safety light barriers so that the pallet can pass through.Freshly filledOn the filling installation
the reusable bottle system fills the clean beer bottles – up to 66,000 units per hour
The swing-top bottle installation works on a separate production line
PRK sensors detect whether every filled reusable bottle has been correctly fitted with a crown cap or whether swing-top bottles have been closed correctly.Every crate in viewAfter labeling
a machine fills several crates simultaneously with 20 beer bottles
sensors detect in a fraction of a second whether a crate is completely full
If a bottle is missing or in a horizontal position
the crate is rejected and the error is corrected manually by an employee
When crates are filled with swing-top bottles
they are aligned so that their labels face outwards
Leuze sensors detect the labels on the bottles and assist the machine in positioning. Efficient productionDinkelacker has successfully modernized its production facilities

the Warriors topped Onondaga High School League American Division foe Marcellus 12-5 on Tuesday
Westhill has now won four of its last five games following a brief two-game skid
“They’re playing well,” Westhill coach Mike Leuze said of his team
“This is the time we want to play our best lacrosse
The Warriors struck first with seven goals in the first half, with Westhill’s defense and goalie Keller O’Hern allowing just one
“We took away the strong hand,” Leuze said of the team’s defensive game plan
“We made it difficult for Marcellus to get their shooters going
Westhill then threw a balanced effort together to down Marcellus for the third-straight time
Leuze noted the Warriors’ practice on Monday was the best one “in a long time.” Their effort transferred over into Tuesday’s matchup
“They executed well and did all of the fundamentals,” Leuze said
“We played with composure and won the ground ball battle.”

That’s the bottom line after a long-expected move on Monday night when the district’s school board approved Rocky Garofalo as new head coach of that team. Garofalo replaces long-time head coach Mike Leuze, who retired last year
Garofalo was an assistant under Leuze for the past 13 seasons and the two have been friends for several years
dating back to their days as teammates and roommates at Herkimer Community College
They share parallel mindsets when it comes to life and lacrosse
But their chemistry in part stemmed from the different volumes at which they express those thoughts
I think that’s what made us such a good pair for so long
Garofalo has seen up close the huge footprints Leuze is leaving behind
Leuze founded the Westhill program in 2001 and took the team to three sectional titles and two state championship games
Garofalo was right there for a large part of that ride
working with the program’s defense while Leuze handled the offense
“We’d become married couples for about four or five months
We sort of work off the same page,” Garofalo said
Another plus is that Garofalo has experience replacing local lacrosse giants
he moved up to the top spot at Henninger after Tom Acee retired from leading that program
Jumping in for Leuze seems more like a natural transition than a potential pressure point
I don’t get as caught up in the wins and losses as I do with the development of some of these kids,” Garofalo said
that’s why we were such a good team together
We were on the same page as far as what we expected from kids and demanded from them
said he considered retiring along with Leuze but decided he wanted to stay on the sidelines a little longer
But he also felt if he was going to return to Westhill
it made sense only if he was named head coach
“I just thought if I was going to come back I would have to be the head coach just so I was going to maintain the situation that was already there,” he said
“I don’t know if it would have been fair to someone coming in being the head coach and me being an assistant
I think that would be difficult for someone coming in and running a program.”
Garofalo said former Le Moyne lacrosse player Aaron Cahill will move into the assistant’s job at Westhill
Garofalo isn’t sure how much longer he’ll be holding the whistle himself
Every day my feet hit the ground,” he said
“I’ve had too many of my friends that are no longer here so I just live for the day

-- Westhill boys lacrosse isn’t bringing the school’s first state championship home with them
The Section III champion Warriors (18-3) fell 13-5 in the Class C state final to Manhasset
Westhill won six consecutive playoff games before Saturday and earned a spot in the state championship for the second time in school history
but this loss here doesn’t define the whole team and the season,” Westhill coach Mike Leuze said
“I can’t say enough about these kids and how hard they worked to get to where they are
It’s a hell of an accomplishment to be here.”
1 ranked Class C team in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association poll
“They played hard,” Leuze said about his team
“They did everything they could to try to contain (Manhasset) and slow them down
There was just so much more speed on the field than we had.”
Rosenberger scored his second goal of the game on a Westhill man-up advantage with just under a minute to play in the first half
But Manhasset answered in the second quarter’s closing seconds
Manhasset cleaned up the Warriors’ errant passes and lost possessions and prevented the Section III champions from gaining offensive momentum
“We got beat by a better team today,” Leuze said
Leuze recounted the moments that made Westhill’s playoff run unique
the Warriors first braved three weather delays in the state regionals against Maine-Endwell
The group took a school bus down to Hofstra University for the championship game
Leuze said they completed the trip in eight hours
He hopes the players look back on those moments from this spring
“Just those little things they’ll remember forever hopefully in a positive light,” Leuze said
“I’m just so proud of these kids I couldn’t think anything more of them.”
Leuze said he didn’t know what to expect from his group on the first day of practice this spring
He said the 2022 Westhill boys lacrosse team exceeded the expectations they set for themselves
But when gloves and helmets flew in the air after the final buzzer
A coach on Manhasset’s sideline paraded a sign that read “survive and advance.”
Up until Saturday night at Hofstra University

Leuze Electronic is expanding its portfolio of optoelectronic and inductive sensors with capacitive proximity switches
making it possible for users to obtain complete solutions for all detection requirements from a single source
Leuze electronic is introducing contactless
wear-free switches which are resistant to electromagnetic influences
interference and contaminants in the air such as dust
The capacitive switches are available in cylindrical or cubic designs with flush and non-flush mounting options to suit the widest range of applications
Due to their semiconductor technology they have an extremely long life expectancy
regardless of the detection and switching frequency
liquid or granular – capacitive sensors are capable of detecting various objects independently of their material and shape
They are particularly suitable for detecting objects in harsh and dirty environments due to their IP67 housing
Because of their ability to “see through” certain materials they are particularly suited for use in the packaging industry
detecting products in outer packaging and behind container walls
checking and monitoring fill levels for completeness
