The outcome of the war in Ukraine is also being played out in space
The American Starlink satellite network is currently essential to the Ukrainian military
providing connectivity for forces on the ground
"Elon Musk is in fact the guardian of Ukraine's connectivity on the battlefield
And that's a strategic vulnerability," warns Arthur De Liedekerke
Senior Director of European Affairs for Rasmussen Global
part of the Renew Europe parliamentary group
insists that the EU has alternatives capable of competing with the American network
"We clearly have the means to replace Starlink," he says
the French MEP does not want to have to resort to this possibility in a hurry
as it will take some time to replace Starlink's vast network of satellites
"It is clear that if Starlink decides to cut the signal today
which is the European network that we have brought into service and which
will make it possible to supplement Starlink's missing signal in Ukraine
Govsatcom is about making available existing government space capabilities
The aim of the system is to provide reliable
secure networks for public authorities in the EU
Ukraine has already expressed an interest in the system
there would be no problem with this solution
"The European Union is very committed to helping Ukraine
so there would certainly be agreement from all the Member States to come to Ukraine's aid if it no longer had a Starlink signal in the future"
Senior Director of European Affairs at the political consultancy firm Rasmussen Global
"GovSatcom is governmental secure satellite communications and it's essentially to provide reliable
strategically autonomous networks for communication services between governments in the EU
It couldn't replace the kind of battlefield connectivity that we're discussing for Ukraine," he says
"So it's not a silver bullet at the moment."
The other option would be to rely on Eutelsat
The Franco-British company can provide services of equivalent quality to Starlink because it has also opted for a low-Earth orbit network
the scale of the two companies is asymmetrical
But Eutelsat also has 35 satellites in geostationary orbit
The Eutelsat option raises an industrial and commercial issue
Starlink has around 40,000 terminals in Ukraine
Civilians also use it to connect to the Internet or to make calls
A further 4,000 could be deployed shortly and an order has been placed for a further 10,000 devices
the price of a Starlink terminal is estimated at €500 euros
compared with nearly €9,000 for Eutelsat's equipment
But the European company has political advantages
chief among them that it is not dependent on the United States
one that has convincing functioning solutions
And one that we need to be able to support through funding and political will," said Arthur De Liedekerke
A final medium-term option exists in the form of the Iris2 project (Infrastructure for Resilience
Interconnection and Security by Satellite)
This network of 290 multi-orbit satellites
will provide secure connectivity services for the EU
The constellation will offer low latency in the form of ultra-fast transmissions close to the performance of terrestrial networks
The 12-year public-private concession contract for the development and operation of Iris2 has been awarded to SpaceRISE
as well as space sector heavyweights Thales
Iris2 is still a long way from implementation
since the system will not be fully operational until 2030
who was rapporteur for the project at the European Parliament
is confident the services will be available sooner
we will have an operational Iris2 constellation that will be able to provide telecommunications services to all the Member States that so wish
I would add that this will be the first time we have had a constellation secured with post-quantum cryptography
so cyber-attacks will not be possible on this constellation
It will be a world first with an ultra-secure signal
which is not the case with the Starlink signal either," he said
It's about not having a single point of failure
It's being able to say no to one and still be online
we're not in a situation where we can do that," he explained
"We've let Ukraine's war zone connectivity be in the hands of one man...that's a strategic vulnerability

Lara de Liedekerke-Meier reportedly became the first Belgian rider to win a CCI5* on Sunday when she and her homebred Hooney d’Arville jumped double-clear to rise to the top spot in the Longines Luhmühlen CCI5*-L (Germany)
Great Britain earned first and second with
Tom McEwen (CHF Cooliser) and Yasmin Ingham (Rehy DJ)—the latter jumping from 28th after dressage by adding no faults to that score in either jumping phase
De Liedekerke-Meier won the hearts of the Luhmühlen crowd with her obvious love for her mother’s homebred 11-year-old Belgian Sport Horse mare (Vigo D’Arsouilles STX—Nooney Blue
the pair went clear in the final show jumping phase to secure a final score of 35.6
she retired to the warm-up for a quiet moment with “Hooney.”
When the news hit that both the riders in front of her had trouble—including dressage and cross-country leaders Ros Canter and Izilot DHI
who had two rails—and she’d won the first five-star of her career
her first hug was reserved for her mare.
I never thought there would be a chance to win the five-star today
I just knew I had a good horse and wanted to jump the best round that I could
Thanks to my team and thank you Luhmühlen for organizing a show of this caliber
She was advised that it would be risky to attempt a five-star so close to the Paris Olympic Games
so I think it’s a good boost of confidence!”

Lara de Liedekerke-Meier is on cloud nine
She should be. She won the most high profile of Olympic trials, Luhmühlen, on her home-bred mare Hooney D’Arville
Her first 5* win and the first for Belgium
Lara has represented Belgium throughout her career; she’s a frequent Nations Cup team member
but her work ethic keeps her turning up and good results have come
She’s earned her membership to the 5* club
Kai-Steffen Meier is the Belgian team selector
She makes certain her place in the team is beyond question and achieved Olympic qualification with five horses
She said: “Having a husband as team selector felt personal for a long time
it took me a few years to manage the situation
I didn’t want to put him in the position of taking me over someone else and in the beginning
then he took the job and I couldn’t finish a course.”
She learnt to differentiate between Kai her husband
“We both took a little bit of time to find our balance,” she said
”I don’t just want to be the best in Belgium I want to be the best in total
as I am working so hard to make that happen
but Luhmühlen was her first since 2017; she decided to run to sharpen herself up before Paris
The three horses short-listed by the Belgian federation ahead of the Paris 2024 team being confirmed are Hooney D’Arville

Lara and Kai live at Chateau D’Arville – host to many international events
Lara and her mum run a small breeding business
Lara said: “We have a lot of fields at home
and we thought what about having a couple of foals a year
We only breed with horses that I’ve ridden
their confirmation and we try to balance with the stallion.”
Hooney was the first foal out of her much-loved mare Nooney Blue who Lara competed as a young rider and junior
Her sire is 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games jumping champion Vigo D’Arsouilles
Lara said: “We were also at Kentucky with Nooney and we joked
we were at the same place at the same time
The result was Hooney but producing her was not easy
She was a late bloomer and Lara was so emotionally involved because of her love of Nooney
Lara grew to understand Hooney more and stopped trying to recreate her dam
but she has a lot of charisma and presence in the arena
Luhmühlen has a trademark tough show jumping track
controlling the controllables and not worrying about other high profile riders on the leaderboard
third after cross country and ultimately Luhmühlen 5* champions
She said: “All the stars aligned; I was lucky with the weather and I enjoyed being there
I am on top of the wave and I don’t want it to go down before the Olympics.”

who launched the career of Belgian championship ride Lara de Liedekerke-Meier
It’s always difficult to let a horse go but without Nooney I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Lara
She explained that Nooney was her partner at her “first international
first four-star win… she was the dam of my first ever five-star winner Hooney D’Arville
but also Kiarado D’Arville and La La Land”
“She didn’t suffer – she was loved until her last breath and I told her how much I was thankful we crossed paths 23 years ago… thank you Nooney for making so many of my dreams true,” she said
Nooney Blue was owned by Lara’s mother Barbara
The grey and Lara were sixth individually at two junior European Championships
and 12th and fourth at young rider Europeans
The pair went on to contest two senior championships together
the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky and the 2011 Europeans at Luhmühlen
They also won the CIC3* (now CCI4*-S) at Feldbach
Lara won her first CCI5* title at Luhmühlen Horse Trials last year on Nooney’s daughter Hooney D’Arville. Her son Kiarado D’Arville already has seven international wins to his name, and her eight-year-old grey daughter La La Land D’Arville has two international victories on her CV.
Nooney was bred by Ludivine Mandron, who also paid tribute to the mare: “My very first baby born 28 years ago… So proud of all that she accomplished, her legacy is unparalleled. Thank you Lara de Liedekerke and your family for your trust 23 years ago and even more for the great life and retirement you offered her. Fly high Nooney Blue.”
Sixth after dressage and third after cross country, the Belgian rider jumped double clear in show jumping and delighted the crowd with an enthusiastic fist pump and bevy of hugs for her homebred mare Hooney d’Arville.
She happily exited the ring to hugs from her team and retreated to the warm up arena with her horse.
In fact, de Liedekerke-Meire was so sure she wouldn’t win, she didn’t even watch the last two. She was trotting her horse out when Ireland’s Jennifer Kuehnle and Polly Blue Eyes felled two rails and contently tending to her mare when overnight leader Ros Canter took to the ring and collected a pair of rails and time faults.
When her husband walked over and broke the news that she’d just won her first five star title, it was confusion followed by disbelief then tears that appeared on de Liedekerke-Meier’s face as the realization set in.
“I had to check the results!” said the disbelieving Belgian. “I came here to do the nice results I knew the horse was capable of. Never in my biggest dream was I believing I could win a five star like today.”
But then defying expectations has kind of been her thing from the start.
Born into a family of equestrians—her parents Barbara and Guillaume de Liedekerke were both event riders—and married to German team event rider Kai-Steffen Meier, de Liedekerke-Merier wasn’t a natural talent.
“For as long as I can remember, there have always been horses around me,” she told FEI. “I got my first pony when I was eight years old. It wasn’t a very easy journey from the start. I was often eliminated. I was told that I lacked fighting spirit to get to the top level. There were a lot of pitfalls but I think it forged my character.”
She would go on to represent Belgian at the 2022 World Championships in Pratoni with Hermione D’Arville but be eliminated on cross country. She again wore the team coat at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but withdrew her mount Alpaga D’Arville after dressage.
“It’s hard to believe. For me, sitting tight on the horse who is not always the easiest and having some tough years. Kai didn’t want me to ride a 5* before the Olympics because for me it was risky,” she confessed.
On Sunday in Luhmühlen, de Liedekerke-Meier put to rest any lingering doubts and made history as the first Belgian rider to ever win a first five-star title.
“When I heard that Alice [Casburn] and Tom [McEwen] and Yas[Ingram] jumped clear, I asked Kai, ‘Is it not better to secure the clear round and make some time fault?’ He said, ‘She jumps really well. Just ride your [round], ride your rhythm, and we will see,’ she continued.
“She was feeling good. I just kept the rhythm. I never thought I was going too too fast. To the last, I almost watched the clock. But I kept my head down and [finished].”
When the news hit that she’d taken the title, the first hug was for her husband then immediately for the horse her mother bred.
“My horse is an incredible athlete,” she said.
“I just knew I had a good horse and wanted to jump the best round that I could. Today was our day. I just managed to put everything together.
McEwen with CHF Cooliser took second on 36 penalties. Ingham and Rehy DJ finished third on 36.9.

Bettina Cardinael has been recognised as the world’s top groom for 2024 after a stunning year working with Belgian Olympian Lara De Liedekerke-Meier
French national Cardinael scooped the Cavalor FEI Best Groom prize during last week’s 2024 FEI Awards Gala presented by Longines
It was a much-deserved honour for Cardinael
who has played a vital role in eventer De Liedekerke-Meier’s recent successes
The Belgian won her first CCI5* in Lumühlen and then finished an impressive 13th in the Individual Eventing competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games
Her consistency has helped her rise to No.4 in the World rankings
While Liedekerke-Meier was at her best on the competition field
Cardinael was working hard behind the scenes during this milestone year
She ensured Lumühlen winner Hooney d’Arville and Olympian Origi were at their best ahead of these huge shows
“I love working with Lara; she is hardworking
human and kind to her horses,” Cardinael said
“This year has been both challenging and exciting
and I could see that our team was destined for great things
I am very happy to have contributed to this success and to be recognised with this award.”
After her first experience working with horses in France
She then decided to go freelance which allowed her to work alongside some amazing athletes
This is also how she came to work for Liedekerke-Meier at Arville Sporthorses
Cardinael did a couple of events with the Belgian and was quickly offered a full-time position which she did not hesitate to accept
as she saw a lot of herself in Liedekerke-Meier
including her love of the sport and horses
Cardinael received her Cavalor FEI Best Groom from Cavalor Brand & Customer Experience Manager
she gave an insight into how to prepare a horse for the biggest show on Earth
She said: “I have always loved Lara’s horse
and he has improved so much over the past year
The special relationship between the horse and groom is developed at home but becomes more evident at shows
At home we try to follow the same routine every day in their schedule
and I love creating little habits with the horses that I can replicate at shows to make them feel confident.”
The other shortlisted nominees for the Cavalor FEI Best Groom prize were Lisa Fundis (GER)
who works with Philipp Weishaupt; Mette Klose Nielsen (DEN)
who works with Jens Lasse Dokkan; and Pille-Riin Roosileht (EST)

Belgium’s Lara de Liedekerke-Meier and home-bred mare Hooney D’Arville topped the Longines Luhmühlen Horse Trials CCI5* results following a dramatic final showjumping phase today (15 June)
I knew I had a good horse and I just wanted to jump the best round I could,” said Lara
Lara and “Hooney” were third going into the showjumping, behind Ireland’s Jennifer Kuehnle and Polly Blue Eyes, and overnight leaders Ros Canter and Izilot DHI
followed by a little lap of honour afterwards as the crowd got behind them and Lara hugged Hooney for her efforts
Ireland’s 22-year-old Jennifer knocked two poles
dropping them down the order to seventh in the Luhmühlen Horse Trials CCI5* results
Then it all came down to Ros and Izilot DHI
could afford to have two poles and one time-penalty
but after using up their two lifelines in the final stages of the course
they then stopped the clock with two time-penalties
Lara said she is usually quite a “slow rider” in the showjumping phase and that it had cost her victories in the past
A lot of people did nine strides to the last
and my jumping trainer said ‘It’s definitely eight
I almost lifted my head to look at the clock
but I didn’t and thought ‘Just jump clear’
“Then I looked at the clock and thought ‘Oh
Lara was waiting by the warm-up with Hooney when she was informed by her husband Kai-Steffen Meier (Belgian eventing team manager) that she had won – before checking the results for herself
“Then all the Belgians came and jumped on me,” laughed Lara
Lara said she has struggled with self-belief
and has had to come back from a number of challenges
including a fall at the first fence in the cross-country at the 2022 World Championships (with Hermione D’Arville)
“I’m always watching them [other riders] on social media
Maybe I should have a bit more self confidence here and there
I think at some point if you keep working and keep believing
then one day it comes together and today was my day,” she said
when you’re on the ground and you see your horse and you think ‘I’ve got to wake up
Lara added that she has worked a lot on her mindset
“Now I’m much stronger because I understand my mindset much better
and the team around me has been so important,” she said
Luhmühlen is also particularly poignant for Lara as it was Hooney’s mother Nooney Blue’s final competition here in 2011
This year’s competition is Hooney’s five-star debut
then we tried having a foal and it didn’t work
adding that she has been a tricky mare to produce
“I was so emotionally involved and just wanted her to become a good horse.”
“I knew everyone was right and that she was a good horse
And then I took off the pressure – I have four other horses qualified for Paris – and I never came here thinking I could be here now
Tom McEwen and 14-year-old mare CHF Cooliser
moved up from fourth after the cross-country to take second in the Luhmühlen Horse Trials CCI5* results
thanks to a super clear round in the showjumping
“I’m just delighted with how Eliza went about her job today,” said Tom
then in the arena today I remembered why I can’t really go any faster because I don’t have much control
she seems to have an argument and tell me that I’m wrong
I’ve been delighted with her the whole weekend.”
Yasmin Ingham and Janette Chin and the Sue Davies Fund’s 14-year-old gelding Rehy DJ finished third on the podium – a repeat of their Luhmühlen 2023 result
The pair were down in 28th after the dressage
then overnight sixth after a clear cross-country round inside the time
They finish the competition on their 36.9 dressage
It’s never over until we finish on the final day
and you just need to believe and never give up,” said Yasmin
“I believe that I have a brilliant jumping horse
his best phases are the cross-country and showjumping
so I was very much looking forward to the weekend
Of course it was a little bit disappointing with his dressage score
he’s normally a little bit further up the leaderboard and can produce some really top scores
but he just wasn’t quite as onside with me as he can be
We’ll go away and work a little bit harder on that
and come out next time and try to be a bit more competitive in the dressage
he’s just the most incredible jumping horse and he gives me the most amazing feeling
he’s an absolute pleasure to ride and I feel very lucky to be the one piloting him.”
While Izilot DHI’s second five-star title was not meant to be this weekend
but with the recent events going on in the eventing world I think there’s much more to life than what we’ve just done today
I’m extremely proud of the way he has coped with the week
Of course I’m disappointed with the performance today
I’ll go and analyse it and look into my riding and see if I could do anything different
we’ve got a happy healthy horse to take home with us.”
Ros said that although she still has to watch her round back
she suspects Izilot DHI’s inexperience crept in
“He’s got a lovely long stride and the five down to the planks (fence 11) was a bit short
I got the nice five but whether I lost a bit of impulsion in the process
he just went a bit tight behind,” she said
“The double (fence 12ab) was quite close to the sides and he just spooked away from those a little bit
that would be the thing he would do slightly
“He’s just a young horse that went a bit inexperienced
Often with him we’re in a position where we’re quite high up the leaderboard so it kind of appears more disappointing
but I’ve got a lot to be proud of him for this week.”
and Kirsty Chabert and Opposition Heraldik Girl were sixth
Jennifer’s five-star debut concluded with two top-10 places; seventh with Polly
dropped from overnight fifth to ninth after knocking two poles in the showjumping
Italy’s Piertro Sandei and Rubis De Prere were 10th

“I’m an enthusiastic monkey-business-tasks-killer and tend to favor quality over quantity.”
Fun Fact About Yourself: The less mainstream my holidays are
I particularly enjoy trekking off-the-beaten-track in areas such as Lapland
Undergraduate School and Major: Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) – Engineering – Material science
Most Recent Employer and Job Title: Total – Performance control engineer
Describe your biggest accomplishment in your career so far: I redesigned and simplified a complex data analysis workflow used to evaluate the economic impact of industrial events affecting a major manufacturing plant
This revamp allowed to gain 50% in efficiency and freed-up time in the department to focus on meaningful analysis to drive the performance of the plant
What quality best describes the MBA classmates you’ve met so far and why
In no other place have I found such a concentration of people willing to learn from one another and try new experiences
what was the key factor that led you to choose this program for your full-time MBA and why was it so important to you
the key deciding factor was the fact that IMD primarily focuses on developing senior executives for industry
The first one is that the teachers have strong hands-on experience and focus on what really matters
The second one is that being an MBA at IMD basically means that you are at the very bottom of the food chain on the campus
You are surrounded by people being more experienced than you are
which is usually not the case at classical b-schools
What club or activity are you looking most forward to in business school
Photography and running as I would like to participate to Lausanne’s half marathon
What led you to pursue an MBA at this point in your career
I strongly believe that an MBA will nicely complement my engineering background with both hard business skills and soft leadership capabilities
I would like to be able to tackle any business-related problem and be able to talk and understand the point of view of people
the MBA project has been maturing for quite some time now
I began to think about it a few years after I graduated from university
not only to cross the checkboxes of the admissions dossier but also to make the most of the experience
When I began preparing my application in early 2018
the planets of my personal and private life were aligned
and it was the perfect timing to go for it
I had seven years of international experience in a major energy company
enough savings to finance it and last but not least
my girlfriend and relatives in general were (and are still) highly supportive
How did you determine your fit at various schools
There are a lot of stories out there outlining how to or how not to select a b-school
I shortlisted the b-schools based on practical aspects such as the program duration (1-year)
intake date (January for professional constraints)
and options for my partner to find a job in the area
I did some research browsing the web and talking to alumni to understand the school better and further narrow down the list
I gained an even better insight on the school approach and mindset during the admission process
I went for IMD and its strong leadership stream
its focus on industry and its class of 90 to really get to know each of my fellow MBAs
What was your defining moment and how did it shape who you are
I think that life is made of opportunities and choices and the decisions we make at these cross-roads shape us progressively
I do not live with regrets because even the seemingly “bad” decisions turn to be at least as rich in learning as the “good” ones
I had the chance to make a few leaps of faith and the results always turned out to be exceptionally rewarding
To paraphrase one of our guest speakers this year
“luck is everywhere but you need to go out of your comfort zone to find it” (Jean-Claude Biver
“Where” is a question I still need to figure out
I definitely would like to be in a position allowing me to tackle complex situations and have a positive impact
not only in terms of tough numbers but also on society in general

If they were giving out medals for commitment, Belgium’s Lara de Liedekerke-Meier would be top of the podium if she could muster up the energy to ascend after surely the most demanding week of her life
she’ll be competing for Belgium in Arville too as they aim to win there for the third year in a row and further cement their place at the top of this season’s standings
“It’s going to be a fabulous few days and I’m really looking forward to it
“Now you can have a holiday.” I told him that I still have another week until that
“Arville is even bigger than ever as we have 12 nations this time
I help to organise things before the event
but when the competition starts I'm just a regular rider
we are surely on a high after what we did at Le Pin.”
It was a magical few days for the Belgian team in France
They headed there as one of four nations looking to secure one of two Olympic qualification places on offer
De Liedekerke-Meier and Hermione D'arville had an excellent dressage phase themselves
and Belgium were in a strong position by the close of Friday
They were in seventh place overall and top amongst the Olympic hopefuls
the strength of their position meant a strategy of safety first for Belgium on cross-country day
“My mind went back to Caen in 2014 when we were on course to qualify for the 2016 Olympics but went too hard on the cross-country course” she said
then myself and Hermione went faster but there was just one moment when it didn’t go to plan
The final two just knew they had to arrive home without drama and that would be enough.”
The plan worked perfectly with rivals Austria and Italy eliminated as they were forced to push for perfection
Belgium’s team manager Kai-Steffen Meier – who is also Lara’s husband – reminded her that it wasn’t quite yet a done deal
“Don’t fall off!” That could have changed everything
“It was such a relief to secure the Team place for Paris
Because of Kai’s position with the Belgian team
it really is a 24/7 thing for us – we are always thinking and talking about competitions and horses and planning and strategy
“There was so much build-up to Haras Du Pin since the start of the year really
whether in France this month or back when we won the Nations Cup in the rain at Montelibretti in March
I want to close the door on what was a bad experience for me at Tokyo 2020.”
one can fully understand De Liedekerke-Meier’s determination to reach Paris and put Tokyo behind her
She was a late call up to the Games after Karin Donckers was ruled out due to his horse’s injury
and the process of getting ready for Tokyo became something of a frenzy
After travelling 6,000 miles from Belgium to Japan
her Games lasted just one phase as she was forced to withdraw after dressage when Alpaga D'arville was ruled unable to continue
I wasn’t going to Tokyo then all of a sudden I was,” she said
“You don’t just have to think about competition
but also that you’ll be away from home and your family for a relatively long period of time
beyond that you also had the restrictions because of Covid at the time
and that meant no fans and everything wasn’t quite what you’d want it to be
On the morning of dressage I took him for a gallop and he was fine
In the dressage itself he felt disconnected
But the following day he had some tests and we could detect that he was not right
Perhaps he could have tried the cross country but it was not fair to put him through that and I also felt it was not right to compete in the Olympic Games on a horse that is not right
While De Liedekerke-Meier has helped Belgium punch a ticket to Paris
she is under no illusions as to the task of securing a place in her nation’s team for Paris
Belgium currently stand firmly on top of the standings in the FEI Eventing Nations Cup™ series after the win in Montelibretti and podium finishes in the other four rounds to date
they would almost certainly have qualified for Paris 2024 through the series had they not already done so at the European Championships
“Belgium is getting stronger and stronger in Eventing,” she said
“It’s true that the four of us in the team secured the place
but now everyone has to show they deserve a place in Paris
I hope to qualify five horses by the end of the year and that gives me options as we build up towards the Olympics
After Arville I’ll be in Lignières and Boekelo
I would like to finish the year in Montelibretti – the same place where it started
It’s been a good year and would seem fitting to have a good experience there at the start and end of the season.”

the politically active Liedekerke-Beaufort family were forced to abandon their castle in the Walloon region of southern Belgium
After a few decades of lying low on a nearby farm, the Liedekerke-Beauforts were ready for a new chateau. In 1866 they turned to English architect Edward Milner, whose Gothic design came to life in the form of Miranda Castle
Things were sedate and stately at Chateau Miranda until the last gasps of World War II
when German troops descended on the grounds during the Battle of the Bulge
Belgium's national railway company used Miranda Castle as a summer home for children who could not be cared for by their parents
the mansion remained a children's recreation site until 1980

The building is still owned by Liedekerke-Beaufort family
stripped the castle of its more valuable components
Though rumors of impending demolition persist, Belgian publication La Meuse reported in August that the castle has been granted a reprieve until at least February 2015 due to its possible inclusion on a Walloon heritage conservation list
developers have expressed interest in turning Noisy Castle into a hotel and restaurant
you may have just a few more months to see the chateau in its dilapidated state

Belgium’s Olympic eventing combination have withdrawn after the dressage phase of the competition in Tokyo
Lara de Liedekerke-Meier and the 15-year-old gelding Alpaga D’Arville have withdrawn due to a minor injury to the horse
The pair had scored 37.2 on the first day of dressage at the Tokyo Olympics
and Lara described making her Games debut after a busy and successful career with this horse as “the cherry on the cake”
by Wunder Boy V/D Zuuthoeve out of the Shamaraan mare Mooney Raaphorst
is a home-bred who is still owned by Lara’s mother Barbara
and together he and Lara have represented Belgium at two European Championships and the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in 2018
with Lara having also ridden Alpaga’s half sister
“The owner of Mooney Raaphorst called my dad and said he had this thoroughbred in the field
and that she was 22 and he wasn’t sure what to do with her
‘You have a lot of fields at your place so why don’t you take her?’
But she still ended up at our place,” Lara explained
“We used a stallion on her that we had spotted at a show and thought was nice
“It’s quite something to have known him from the beginning
and I have so many emotions about riding him
and [as a six-year-old] won the dressage at Le Lion D’Angers the year it was cancelled
“He is a good dressage horse and a phenomenal cross-country horse
The pair’s withdrawal comes as a huge blow to Belgium
as they were the nation’s sole representatives in the Olympic eventing
