Edited press release from Longines EEF Series
Portugal was tied for first place with France and Sweden but while the Portuguese maintained their strong form in round two
there was disappointment for the other two nations
Sweden notched up 16 faults to leave them in eventual ninth while France tumbled down the order to 10th after they amassed 24 penalties
The second round caused more problems than the first and double clears around Henk Linders’ (NED) testing track were few and far between
The fourth horse-and-rider combination to achieve the feat of a double clear was Mariano Martinez Bastida (ESP) on Origi Van’t Geyzeven (Thunder vd Zuuthoeve x Heureka)
whose fault free performance helped Spain finish fourth just ahead of Germany in fifth.

He really is such a pleasure horse to deal with.”
Justin Verboomen bought the stallion as a two-year-old from the breeder

this horse is from another planet.' I really didn't understand why the breeder wanted to sell him
so I very quickly shook his hand at the time,” Justin laughs
“I really had a lot of trust and faith in this horse from the beginning
Zonik Plus gives me a feeling I can't explain.”
Verboomen has set the 2025 European Championships in Crozet as target
I dreamed of one day being able to ride at this level
But since two years I think a little differently about that
I am enjoying it now and I really hope to be able to do this with Zonik Plus for a very long time

You really have the feeling of a big competition here
It was the first international Grand Prix victory for Semmieke and Farrington
and only their third senior Grand Prix ever on this horse
“This was our first competition of the year and a wonderful way to start the season
Of course there are always things that could be better
but it's almost crazy to say that when you win with such a percentage.” About her future with Farrington
she is clear: “I really feel like this horse has no limit

Results from an international dressage competition have been removed from the official rankings
after the FEI found evidence of ‘nationalistic judging’
The judging discrepancies were said to have occurred in the Grand Prix Special test at the CDI3* competition in Lier
Ukrainian rider Inna Logutenkova won the competition
with two Ukrainian judges scoring her and her horse Fleraro well into the 70s – whereas the other judges scored her up to 10% lower
The FEI released a statement on 22 March confirming that the results from the class will not count towards the Olympic and World Rankings
“This was a clear example of nationalistic judging and the FEI takes this very seriously”
“The FEI has a duty to take the appropriate measures if it is shown that nationalistic judging has occurred
“Judging at all FEI events must be absolutely fair and the integrity of the competitions and of the judges themselves must be beyond reproach.”
The Ukrainian Equestrian Federation has reacted to the news
demanding an apology from the FEI for making the allegations and for removing the results from the rankings without first conducting a hearing
this only affects Inna Logutenkova’s rankings with Fleraro – she will still ride at the Rio Olympics as an individual with her top horse Don Gregorius
Community members packed Cleveland’s Community Police Commission meeting on Nov
included sections which provide Cleveland police arguments to use drones over protests under the guise of other police operations
After public outrage and a contentious meeting
two authorized drone uses in the policy which could target protesters were removed
the policy that was approved by the Commission still included concerning language
such as the following in the Operational Procedures: “[Drone] operators shall not fly over large crowds unless exigent circumstances exist or unless absolutely necessary for law enforcement purposes and approved by the onsite command officers.“
“There are so many problems with this drone policy
It needs to be immediately rewritten,” said Commissioner Teri Wang
“The Commission was not provided sufficient time and access to review the policy before it was presented for a vote
It is still unclear to me how this policy was even written and who was involved
Certainly the public was not properly engaged.”
a police drone was spotted over a pro-Palestine protest
Five individuals were cited at the protest for protected First Amendment activity
Chief of Police Dorothy Todd was present at the protest and told Wang the drone was used for “training.”
Multiple commissioners have said the drone policy is still waiting on approval from the Department of Justice
The policy was first introduced and voted upon at a committee meeting on Nov. 11. Wang, who is listed as a committee member on the CPC website
was not informed of the meeting ahead of time
The committee voted in favor of bringing the policy to the full Commission
there was an exchange between Wang and van Lier related to the drone policy
Wang filmed herself asking van Lier why he misled the Commission about whether the drone policy had been reviewed by Constitutional experts
“When I questioned Piet, he spun around, approached me with a menacing glare, yanked my cell phone out of my hand, and then threw it,” Wang told Liberation News. Footage of the exchange appears to corroborate the claims of Wang
A report was made by the police following the incident
numerous community members spoke out against the drone policy during public comment
a student at Case Western Reserve University and a pro-Palestine advocate on campus
“[This] is a clear violation of First Amendment rights
and an increase in state control of the people
While this policy is based on the drone policy from Oakland
[California] that policy prohibits drone use during protests,” said Wahed
Numerous students at CWRU have raised concerns of surveillance and retaliation for Palestinian advocacy in the past year. The U.S. Department of Education recently opened a Title VI investigation into the university following allegations of discrimination against Palestinian
a community organizer who provides support to individuals falsely accused by Cleveland police
“What’s more concerning to me is that [the drones] are in the hands of some of the most vile
“The Commission has done nothing but collaborate with
The proposed drone policy has similar language to the policy adopted by the Massachusetts State Police, a policy the ACLU has claimed was used to monitor Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020: “[T]he MSP
used drones to surveil Black Lives Matter protests across the state
traffic incident management and temporary perimeter security,’ the MSP was actively surveilling people exercising their First Amendment rights.”
The move to expand the surveillance technology available to Cleveland’s police follows a year of protests against the U.S.-sponsored genocide in Palestine
Protest movements are expected to grow under the Trump administration. A coalition of Cleveland community organizations have announced a protest for Jan. 20, 2025 to inaugurate a fight back against Trump’s extreme-right billionaire agenda
Organizers say the increased repression will only breed more resistance

Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto last month against the Utah Hockey Club in Salt Lake City
Ontario — Shane Pinto was all smiles as he came off the ice from the Senators’ morning skate
even if an undisclosed injury kept the Franklin Square product sidelined for a seventh straight game on Thursday night against the Islanders at Canadian Tire Centre
things are more settled despite his latest lengthy absence from the lineup (he’s likely to return Saturday in Boston)
“It’s just less [to worry about],” Pinto told Newsday
“You just get to play hockey and just not worry about it
It does weigh on your mind when you’re going through it
but now I can just play hockey and just enjoy it
It definitely makes the game better for sure.”
$7.5 million deal and likely is headed to a much more lucrative contract as an arbitration-eligible restricted free agent in 2026
There was thought that he was headed in that direction in the summer of 2023 as an RFA
But he never signed a deal before the NHL handed him a 41-game ban for the vaguely announced “activities relating to sports wagering,” though the league said there was no evidence that Pinto bet on hockey
He also missed all but five games in 2021-22 because of a shoulder injury
The dynamic center returned from his suspension on Jan
and had nine goals and 18 assists in the final 41 games last season
He started this season with one goal and two assists in six games
“He’s a great player,” Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson said
Definitely one of the guys you’ve got to be aware of.”
Even though Pinto grew up a Penguins fan dreaming of being Sidney Crosby’s teammate
he does have Islanders ties beyond trade speculation that linked him to his hometown team during his holdout before being suspended
“I don’t know why that is,” Pinto said of frequently being linked to the Islanders
He and Brock Nelson went to the University of North Dakota
He rented Hudson Fasching’s home for the offseason
“I knew he was a Long Island kid but I didn’t know he trained specifically at Northwell [Health Ice Center in East Meadow]
He was looking for a summer rental and he asked me if any guys were looking and had an empty place for the summer
Works extremely hard from what I saw at the World Championships
Despite leaving Carey High School after his sophomore year for Connecticut’s South Kent High School and Selects Academy when he decided to fully concentrate on hockey
Pinto said the Bruins’ Charlie McAvoy (Long Beach) and the Rangers’ Adam Fox (Jericho) were inspirational for him
“You see the last 10 years a lot of NHLers,” Pinto said of Long Island products
it just starts with them paving the way for us
Hopefully we pave the way for younger guys now.”

New York State Police investigate the scene on Houck Road in upstate Masonville where a former Long Island woman and her two children were stabbed
A 32-year-old man has been charged with murder after a stabbing upstate that left his pregnant wife dead and their two young daughters hospitalized
was five months pregnant when she was fatally stabbed Wednesday night
She grew up on Long Island before moving to Masonville in the western Catskill Mountains
are recovering at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse
During a news conference on Friday outside Troop C headquarters in Unadilla
said the girls were "expected to make a full recovery" and would eventually be released to relatives
"Family members have arrived from outside of the area and will be caring for the girls upon their release from the hospital," Shuta said
was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder on Thursday morning at Delhi Town Court
He remains at Delaware County Jail without bail
Prosecutors are also working on convening a grand jury before Wednesday
when a felony preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled
Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith said during the Friday news conference
Police said troopers found the stabbing victims at a Houck Road home in Masonville shortly before 11:30 p.m
They were responding to a 911 call placed by Drew Garnier
A 911 dispatcher told responding troopers that the husband was trying to apply pressure to his wife's wounds to stop the bleeding
according to an investigative report filed by state police
Troopers Corey King and Ronald King approached the home
a double-wide trailer with a covered front porch
with medical bags and their guns drawn to treat the injured woman when they saw Drew Garnier poke his head out of the front door and then duck back in
The troopers said that they heard a single "high-velocity" gunshot and retreated to the end of the driveway to wait for backup from a Delaware County Sheriff's deputy
Using the sheriff's patrol car as a shield
the 9-year-old daughter ran from the home to police wearing bloodstained clothes
She told them her mother had been stabbed and that there was a man
whose clothes were also stained with blood
With the children safely secured away from the property
the officers called into the home for Drew Garnier to come out with his hands up
The officers said he was covered in blood with wounds on his hands
They said they found a butter knife in his left front pocket
they found Samantha Garnier lying on her side with multiple stab wounds
She was airlifted to UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City
Troopers said they found a spent shell casing and an AR-15-style rifle covered in blood with a high-capacity magazine

Great Britain’s Team Audevard gave a good account of themselves in the CSIO3* Nations Cup EEF Series powered by Longines in Lier
It was a closely fought contest all the way and the British team had to draw on their strengths in round two to take a podium spot
eventually finishing in the runner-up position two fences behind Portugal
who remained steadfastly ahead on a zero score
“I was delighted with the young team
they rode like seasoned pros – all came through ponies together and it was like a very normal day at the office; they knew the job in hand and had a little bad luck
but it was pleasure [to manage the team],” said Chef d’Equipe Di Lampard.
Starting in seventh draw of 12 teams over course-designer Henk Linders’ (NED) 12-fence
2020 Tokyo Olympian Harry Charles led the way for Team Audevard. Riding Even Strides LLC’s Kannandillo
a ride picked up two months ago while competing in Wellington
Harry skilfully guided the Kannan x Candillo 3 nine-year-old around the course
the pair making just one error lowering the centre element of the combination for four faults
Jodie Hall McAteer took her turn next with the 12-year-old stallion Kingsborough Kasper
another by Kannan and this time out of a Revenge mare and provided a vital clear to keep the team in the hunt.
Sienna fell foul of the middle element of the combination as did older brother Harry with Tara Charles and Stall Zet’s game 15-year-old mare Stardust (Chacco-Blue x Con Air 7) as the back rail fell to also finish on four faults.
Anchor rider Robert Murphy was under pressure to produce a clear round to keep Great Britain’s Team Audevard in touch with the leaders
but this talented young man has a growing reputation of staying cool and calm in tense situations
and delivered a much-needed clear on Catch-Me Van Berkenbroeck
a Cicero Z Van Paemel x Nonstop 11-year-old stallion jointly owned by Robert with Jos Lansink Horse BV and breeder Michael Spaas.
The pressure was on in round two as only one fence separated six teams and all members of every team again jumped the full course
as per the rules in this EEF series. Portugal sat at the top on a zero score alongside Sweden and France carrying a zero score with Great Britain bunched together in fourth with Ireland
Harry and Kannandillo were again caught out by the second element of the combination to finish on four faults
but ‘Girl Power’ came into play as Jodie posted another superb clear
Kingsborough Kasper again giving the fences plenty of air
to be one of only five in the entire competition of 48 riders to ride double clear
Sienna also came up trumps for a foot-perfect round on Stardust for the team to sit on a total of eight faults with just the final riders to participate. Ireland was still on level-pegging on four while Spain
Brazil and France fell by the wayside and Germany
Belgium and The Netherlands added to their round one scores. Portugal proved the only team to stay strong and out in front
A clear round from Robert with Catch-Me Van Berkenbroeck would still have earned second spot as Portugal could not be caught
and the pair came home on eight faults. Great Britain’s Team Audevard finished second on eight faults behind Portugal on a zero score with Ireland also on eight but in a slower time for third
“Jodie was outstanding to jump a double clear. “It was a proper
big 1.50m track but fairly designed and not overly technical. We entered in the spirit of the EEF series with all four riders under 25 and yet some very experienced riders fell apart in round two
I’m very proud of our riders,” said Di Lampard. “It’s a fantastic result to pick up league points so early on. Hopefully
we will make it through all the way to the final as we did last year and gain valuable experience in the semi-finals and the Final.”
Harry Charles & Kannandillo – 4/4
Jodie Hall-McAteer & Kingsborough Kasper – 0/0
Robert Murphy & Catch-Me Van Berkenbroeck – 0/8

Saint Francis basketball legend Norm Van Lier will be honored on Feb
15 prior to the men’s basketball team’s game against Wagner that evening
This tribute comes nearly 15 years after his death on Feb
Van Lier began his Saint Francis career in 1966 after a standout four years at Midland High School in western Pennsylvania
where he helped lead his team to a 28-0 record and a state championship as a senior
Van Lier was the epitome of a two-way player
He was a standout defensive guard who scored 1,410 points during his collegiate career in Loretto from 1966-69
“People hated when he played you because you knew he was going to be up on (defense on) you all game,” said Art Hunter
a former teammate of Van Lier’s at Saint Francis and one of the organizers of the tribute to the former Flash star
“He would make you a better player through how hard he played
No one could play as hard as Norm – it was impossible.”
After graduating from Saint Francis in 1969
Van Lier played 10 seasons in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls
He averaged 11.8 points per game in the NBA and played in the league’s all-star game three times
Van Lier was an NBA all-defense selection eight times
He led the league in assists in 1970-71 while playing for the Royals
He retired in 1979 with NBA career totals of 8,770 points and 5,217 assists
Many NBA pundits argue that Van Lier and former Bulls teammate and Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan combined to form the best defensive backcourt in league history when they played for Chicago from 1971-76
Van Lier consistently demonstrated the same intensity in off-season workouts at Midland and Saint Francis as he did in NBA playoff games
from shooting to defense to rebounding,” said Bob Moore
a Saint Francis alumnus and fellow organizer of the tribute later this month
“Defensively in his time period (in the NBA)
Van Lier was inducted into the Saint Francis Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999
His jersey number 12 is retired at the University
Norm Van Lier was buried in the Beaver Cemetery and Mausoleum
a small flat tombstone bearing Van Lier's name was placed on his grave
But still missing is a standard grave monument that would appropriately commemorate one of the most famous athletes in Beaver County history
It's uncertain why Van Lier doesn't have such a gravestone
But for a man who accomplished so much as a basketball player -- first playing scholastic hoops at Midland High School
Francis University and then for 11 seasons in the National Basketball Association -- it would be fitting if his cemetery plot had one
That's what Midland native Ray Hoppa and Beaver resident Dave Shallcross have believed for several years
That's why they hatched a plan to give Van Lier a fitting memorial
Hoppa and Shallcross have organized a fundraising event that will take place at 7 p.m
Friday at the gymnasium at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School in Midland
It's the same gym where Van Lier played when he was in high school
an alumni game will be played pitting former players from Beaver and Midland high schools against a team of Central Valley High School alums
"Ray and I have been kicking around the idea to do this for at least a year or so," Shallcross said
we thought it might be something that some of the students from Midland who go to Beaver could have done for their senior project
Hoppa and Shallcross have arranged for two local businesses -- Steckman Memorials and Rome Monument -- to design
manufacture and install Van Lier's gravestone
"It's going to be really nice," said Hoppa
a 1963 Midland graduate who served as athletic director at New Brighton
Fox Chapel and Beaver high schools before retiring recently
Van Lier's gravestone will be made of black marble
Along with inscriptions that include his name
date of death and other biographical information about his playing career
One shows Van Lier taking a jump shot during his days with the Chicago Bulls
The other is a portrait taken of him not long before he died in 2009
"Van Lier was my idol as a kid growing up," said Shallcross
a 1973 Beaver graduate who played basketball for the Bobcats
I followed him during Midland's great run in '65
Then I had the opportunity to attend a free basketball camp he put on at Bradys Run Park for two weeks during my eighth-grade summer
following him from his days playing for the (Cincinnati) Royals with Oscar Robertson throughout his career with the Bulls."
Van Lier played point guard on that legendary 1965 Midland team
considered by many to be one of the greatest high school teams in Pennsylvania history
With Van Lier and forward Simmie Hill leading the way
the Leopards finished 28-0 and easily won WPIAL and PIAA championships
Van Lier was selected in the third round of the 1969 NBA draft
The Bulls reacquired Van Lier during the 1971–72 season
Nicknamed "Stormin' Norman" for his tenacity and passion for the game
Van Lier was one of the most popular Bulls of the 1970s
After playing briefly with the Milwaukee Bucks
Van Lier then worked as an analyst on Bulls radio broadcasts from 1980-82
he was a television pregame and postgame analyst for Bulls games
Van Lier was found unresponsive in his Chicago apartment
Although the cause of death was never determined
Van Lier's body was flown to Pennsylvania for another funeral in Midland
Tickets for Friday's fund-raising game at Lincoln Park cost $5 for adults and $2 for students
Red Flash legend Norm Van Lier – and other basketball players from the University’s “Golden Era” – were honored before the men’s basketball team’s game against Wagner on Feb
University President Father Malachi Van Tassell blessed the Golden Era plaques on display in the lobby of the Stokes Center before tipoff against the Seahawks
Many Saint Francis players who played in this era
The plaques include pictures and information about players from this period of SFU men’s basketball history
“I’m so pleased that we could honor so many wonderful players and alumni,” said Father Malachi
“It’s fitting that these plaques are where they are – they serve as inspiration to the many student-athletes that walk through this hallway.”
Saint Francis alumnus Bob Moore helped organize the tribute to Van Lier and other Golden Era players
He addressed the gathering of alumni before Father Malachi blessed the plaques
“It’s great because the people who put it (the event) together actually went to school with Norm,” said Moore
“Norm had an affection for Saint Francis.”
Van Lier scored 1,410 points during his SFU career (1966-69)
Considered by his peers to be one of the toughest guards in the NBA
he averaged 11.8 points per game during his decade of pro ball
He was an NBA all-defense selection eight times
Van Lier led the league in assists in 1970-71 while playing for the Royals
SFU’s players wore warm-up T-shirts honoring Van Lier with his last name printed on the back of them
Tributes to Van Lier were also featured on the video board before tip-off

compatriot and mentor,” said Marit ter Mate-Martinsen MATESOL ’01 of her former professor Leo van Lier
whose life was remembered and honored at a memorial event and fundraiser held February 4 on the Middlebury Institute campus
“He impacted my beliefs as a teacher immensely,” added ter Mate-Martinsen
“I’m so glad I was able to commemorate Leo as a beautiful
humorous and brilliant human being with others who loved him
and I’m lucky to be counted amongst them!”
colleagues and current students to celebrate Professor van Lier’s impact on the field of applied and educational linguistics and language education
van Lier is perhaps best known for bringing the concept of ecology into applied linguistics
who taught at the Institute for more than 20 years beginning in the late 1980s
The afternoon program featured live music by Middlebury Institute alumni Tim Marquette MATESOL ‘16 and Desma Johnson MATESOL ’01
and a slide show highlighting Professor van Lier’s professional and personal accomplishments
Stories told by several former students and colleagues painted a colorful picture of Leo van Lier the “rock star,” who was passionate about teaching and dedicated to his research
Colleagues at the event remembered him for his unique combination of brilliance and empathy
Professor Kathi Bailey added that “I liked to think of Leo as our resident ‘modelologist,’ since he so often thought by drawing figures that represented concepts
Often in a faculty meeting when we were trying to hash out a complex issue
Leo would sit quietly and listen to the discussion while he sketched
Then he would show us what he had drawn and how the relationship among the issues we were debating could be better understood
He was a great scholar and a wonderful friend
The event also raised nearly $7,000 for the Leo van Lier Lecture Series, which brings pre-eminent scholars in the field of applied and educational linguistics to campus to share their work with faculty and graduate students. For information about the lecture series or to make a gift to the Lecture Series fund in Professor van Lier’s memory, click here
“I’m delighted that so many people came to MIIS to remember and honor this remarkable man,” said Bailey
Shayna Lier never planned on becoming one of the country’s top snow bikers
But the Aberdeen native and Northern State University senior did it anyway
Lier is trying to earn the chance to compete against not just the best in the U.S.
as she races in the X Games qualifier in Elk River
Go back less than three years and talk to Lier
a successful and still active motocross rider and former BMX biker
and you might not hear the words “snow bike” come out of her mouth
Today it’s more than just a passion — it might be her ticket to the big time
“Evolution Powersports down in Watertown helps me out a lot with motocross
and they asked me to come to Detroit Lakes
a few years ago and help me demo these things they called ‘timber sleds.’ I got there and they said
Her first time ever racing the vehicles in real competition
she qualified for the B main and took fifth
“I must be OK at this sport,” she recalled thinking
Snow bike bears substantial resemblance to motocross
“It’s like a dirt bike snowmobile,” Lier explained
I flew to a lot of races because it’d be like 20-plus hours to drive,” Lier said
I think last year I got five firsts and two seconds with the women’s division
I’d usually make the B main and get B top five
Made the A main last year once and got eighth
that she won the women’s championship in the American Motorcycle Association Championship Snow Bike Series this season
but perhaps more impressive because Lier lives in Aberdeen
“I don’t really (practice),” Lier said with a chuckle
“The only time I get to practice is when I get to the race
Lier had driven a snow bike before she raced for the first time
Her dad bought a kit when she was a senior in high school
and they would free ride in the mountains from time to time
And the racing is where she’s making a mark
“It’s definitely an opportunity,” she said
“I really wasn’t planning on going for the X Games
but my boss at Beadle Fireworks really wanted me to
and then (Friday) I practiced and felt really good
As if falling headfirst into a national championship among the women isn’t enough
Lier will be racing against the men in Elk River today
And it’s worth noting that snow bike does favor a larger frame
And while some guys don’t appreciate getting passed by a woman
the majority of the sport has been supportive of Lier’s presence within it
It’s really cool because you talk back and forth about certain sections of the track
especially when you do pretty well in the men’s class,” Lier said
and they’ll be crazy when you pass them and crash themselves because they don’t want you to beat them
But most of them tell me ‘Good job,’ and they’re pretty cool with it.”
Only the top handful of those racing in the two qualifiers today and Sunday will qualify for the X Games
I feel like it’s just good to be out there competing with them,” Lier said
because I’m going to go out there and ride like I usually do
