Belgian Pro League’s head in the sand attitude towards Lokeren-Temse license could be about to cause huge problems | OneFootballGet Belgian & Dutch Football News
It is safe to say that, the Belgian Pro League was hoping that RWDM would beat Lokeren-Temse during the Challenger Pro League play-offs
The sides appearances in this years post-season is controversial
given that they have not been granted a licence for the top flight should they be promoted
The side were allowed to participate as they appeal the ruling
but it was clear that the football authorities hoped the situation would be over by now
Lokeren-Temse took down a stunned RWDM side to reach the final against Patro Eisden
and will be confident they can beat Patro and reach the final
they would then face one of the sides already in the Pro League
At the moment this looks likely to be either Sint Truiden or Cercle Brugge
both of these sides would be favourites and could save the league a major headache
There is now a chance that the side could win promotion without having been granted a license for the top flight
Lierse have already complained about the side even taking part in the play-offs without one in place
and they will feel rightly aggrieved if Lokeren manage to somehow win promotion and then be unable to take a place in the Pro League
where they must then decide who takes that final spot in the Pro League
They would likely just opt to keep the team that was already there
but this would likely lead to some justified anger form Patro Eisden
This is certainly a situation to watch over the next few weeks
as it will set a precedent for the future management of licenses and play-offs within the Belgian football structure at the highest level
the club will be able to secure a license before a play-off final if they manage to get past Patro Eisden

"I saw that Ceylin had problems with her chain
although I didn't know if she was still holding back with a view to tomorrow
But I think she rode a strong race.”
Casasola took control of the front of the race after getting the holeshot while Brand had a bit of a slower start
Alvarado had lost time after dropping her chain at the barriers and going in for a bike change while four riders separated themselves at the front
Brand set the pace of the lead group which included Laura Verdonschot (De Ceuster-Bonache)
Casasola and Annemarie Worst (Fenix-Deceuninck)

Niels Vanderputte second ahead of teammate Jente Michels
Niels Vanderputte dropped his Alpecin-Deceuninck Development teammate Jente Michels on the ninth and final lap to take second place
not because of riding the first time in this jersey

Nys capitalized on a mechanical issue suffered by rival

“This was great,” Nys told broadcasters, according to WielerFlits
“In the second round I got some space
It was wise not to push the gas full on there
but to let myself slide with the other guys
My technique and my legs finally got into rhythm
Iserbyt took charge at the front early on the 2.6km technical course centred around steep Mont Henri
using his explosivity to open up a small gap while his teammate Lars van der Haar assisted with some blocking
putting Iserbyrt and the others under pressure
Iserbyt fought his way to the front chopping Van der Haar at one point to bring the gap back

It has been a busy and challenging week for Belgian footballer Radja Nainggolan who played 30 times for the national team
it was announced that he had been signed by Belgian second division team Lokeren-Temse and came off the bench to score on his debut match against Lierse with what is known as an Olympic goal (direct from a corner kick)
he was arrested by Belgian police as part of an investigation into smuggling of cocaine through Antwerp and its distribution throughout Belgium
His new club immediately issued the following statement “The club learned through the media that player Radja Nainggolan would be questioned as part of an investigation
The club respects the presumption of innocence and can therefore not comment further
“We can only confirm that the player was absent from training this morning
The club wishes to concentrate solely on the important catch-up match tomorrow evening against KAS Eupen
Radja Nainggolan is in any case not eligible to play for that match.”
Nainggolan has been a successful midfield footballer spending much of his time with Italian clubs such as AS Roma, Inter Milan and Cagliari but as he aged and appeared to lose some of his fiery match play
he moved on to Royal Antwerp FC and then to Indonesian club Bhayangkara where he played just 10 games
Born of a Belgian mother and Indonesian father
he had the choice of playing internationally for either country but chose the ‘Red Devils’ and despite some falling out with managers
didn’t retire from the national team until 2018
apparently upset because he had not been picked for the World Cup in Russia
Not a great start to his new career at Lokeren-Temse and it has to be assumed that he will probably not play for them again until such time as his name is dropped from the investigation or in a worst scenario

Radja Nainggolan has been arrested as part of a cocaine trafficking investigation
who currently plays for Belgian side Lokeren-Temse
was arrested on Monday morning as part of an investigation into the import of cocaine from South America to Europe
As part of the investigation around 30 houses were searched in the province of Antwerp and in Belgian capital city
During the investigation Nainggolan's car was towed
"The investigation concerns suspected facts of importing cocaine from South America to Europe
via the port of Antwerp and its redistribution in Belgium," says the Brussels public prosecutor's office
"We can confirm that the footballer Radja Nainggolan has been arrested
It's not the first time that Nainggolan has been linked with cocaine smuggling.
The report states that one of the midfielder's business partners in a private jet firm has been convicted of drug smuggling for terrorist organisation Hezbollah.
More recently, Nainggolan had been regularly spotted with people close to the drug world in Antwerp's nightlife.
His big breakthrough came with Serie A side Cagliari before going on to join Roma in 2014
It was in the Italian capital where Nainggolan would spend his best years
making over 200 appearances and scoring 33 goals
He also played 24 times for Roma in the Champions League
That earned him a big move to join Inter Milan for £32million in 2018
but despite scoring seven goals in 41 games
he left the club for two loan spells with former club Cagliari before returning to Belgium
win the Serie A title at the San Siro during the 2020/21 season
Nainggolan was also a part of Belgium's golden generation, winning 30 caps in a side that featured Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne
He now plays for Belgian second division side Lokeren-Temse
Racoon embarked on an extensive tour of The Netherlands in support of their album
which is why Racoon’s long-time lighting designer
Erwin Van Lokeren created unique looks for every stop along the way
As Racoon did the final shows of its extended run
Van Lokeren wove together many of those looks from the past two-and-a-half years into a tapestry
his design blends live images of the band’s members on a blow-through video wall with light projected from multiple angles
“I took all those designs from previous tours for this album shuffled them and created a new look with all those ideas,” Van Lokeren said of this design
“Because Racoon brings easy listening to pop music it’s important to create minimalistic looks on a big stage while also making the looks big when appropriate
I worked with see-through LED wall with lights behind to give the set an industrial big look
I will use only some parts of the video wall
Van Lokeren’s production design is keeping audiences engaged through the 105-minute show by evolving and building up to a final “wow” segment
He refrained from using all the fixtures in his rig until he is about two-thirds of the way through his show
at which point he turns up the intensity level
Splendit ensured that Van Lokeren had all the necessary tools at his disposal
supplying him with a rig that features 146 CHAUVET Professional fixtures
Include in this impressive collection are the Maverick MK3 Profile CX
“My idea for this show was to go with mostly warm white
the STRIKE LED fixtures are perfect for that
They can really be dimmed low to give me that beautiful warm glow red shift
I get an amazing output which is perfect for these big arena shows
The 10 Maverick MK3 Profile CX fixtures in his rig serve as front lights
while his 34 Maverick Storm 1 Hybrids are being used in the main grid above the stage
All of the fixtures in his rig work in harmony with the massive blow through video screen that runs across the back of the stage
The wall displays live images of the band members shot from different angels from four remote cameras on stage
“I wrote complete instructions on how I wanted the screen setup and the effects used in that song and also all the important things that need to happen in the song for the cameras,” said Van Lokeren
the camera crew and the operator for the remote cameras were completely briefed on what needed to happen
cues the camera crew for the specials.”
“Bert has done an excellent job on this tour,” continued Van Lokeren
“He deserves a lot of credit as do the teams from Splendit for lights; Gravity
for the wall; Tintaan (Production); PRG (sound); Unlimited Productions (cameras/flypack); and Pieter Smit (trucking).”

Former Inter and Belgium midfielder Radja Nainggolan has reportedly been arrested as part of a cocaine trafficking investigation
The City of Lokeren is a Belgian municipality tasked with providing essential services to the 50,000 people who live there
The city has invested in a modernization project aimed at creating a flexible and modern workplace for its employees to thrive in as they focus on providing these essential services
Centered around Microsoft’s cloud and security solutions
the project has radically transformed working habits and culture at the municipality
It is also playing a crucial role in the City’s wider goal: to provide more and better services for its growing community
“Lokeren is one of those cities where community and citizen wellbeing come before anything
Making their lives easier is at the heart of our mission here at the municipality – and technology is definitely instrumental to that.”
is discussing his organization’s digitalization efforts and the impact they’re having on its workforce and citizens
“Our goal at the City of Lokeren is to be the beating heart of citizen life,” he says
“and to support collective and individual needs in any possible way.”
but a concrete strategy for the City of Lokeren
One that recently persuaded them to transform their IT landscape and make it fit for the modern workplace
And ultimately led them to Microsoft and its range of cloud and security solutions
“Whatever service you might ever need as a citizen
we at the City of Lokeren will be there to address it for you,” he explains
“That puts our IT team under a lot of pressure: how can we support our colleagues in their tasks
we’re a public sector organization and we have to comply with strict rules on data protection and use
we have needed a solution that would guarantee us all these functionalities at the same time
“We eventually found it in Microsoft’s modern workplace and security suite.”
A charming city nestled in northeastern Belgium
Lokeren is home to nearly 50,000 citizens and employs over 1,000 people between onsite and office-based workers
“Our workforce is responsible for pretty much all public-facing operations in the community
Front Office Consultant at the City of Lokeren
the running of the Sunday market… all that kind of activity is down to us.”
To support such a wide range of roles and responsibilities
the organization has spent the past four years migrating its on-prem legacy systems on to the cloud
we relied on an IT network that was on-prem
outdated and unfit for the modern workplace,” he explains
we turned to Microsoft and its partner Wortell and asked them to help us come up with a cloud migration program that would make our work and culture more flexible and future-proof
“That was the very start of our journey to a unified platform with Microsoft solutions.”
The first step of City of Lokeren’s migration was to shift part of its workforce onto Microsoft Surface laptops and roll them out using Autopilot
“Some of the users in our organization are always working offsite on the frontline
so they need to be light and agile,” says Harry Vyvey
That’s why we chose to start off with the Surface laptops – to equip them with powerful and lightweight devices ideal for people on the move.”
Following the devices came the wider network migration to a range of modern workplace solutions such as Microsoft Office 365
which helped to guarantee greater flexibility especially during the pandemic
“Teams was one of the biggest game changers for us,” adds Jan Roels
“It allowed us to host meetings wherever we wanted
simplify our operations and be more efficient.”
the organization decided to implement Microsoft Intune for device management
as well as Microsoft’s Security stack to introduce new lines of defense for the entire organization
This was the result of many years spent with an on-prem server security orchestrator that offered minimal monitoring and demanded constant maintenance
One that eventually led them to deploy solutions including Microsoft Sentinel
Cloud Apps and Office – with work on the data governance side through Microsoft Purview also taking place
The result is a Security Operations Center running almost entirely on Microsoft products and managed by partner Wortell
it’s important that consultants are there to help us implement the solutions
but also learn how to use them,” says Roels
“That’s exactly the kind of experience we had with Wortell
who took the time to guide us throughout the process and made sure we understood all aspects.”
Currently operating in a hybrid cloud set-up
City of Lokeren can reflect on the positive change its migration has helped to drive
but we’ll keep on discussing with our partners on ways to improve our environment and if possible
find a way to go full cloud,” explains Vyvey
we’re particularly interested in moving our servers to Azure using Migrate Tool and we’ve started using the Purview platform
Microsoft Copilot also looks promising and we’ll certainly keep an eye on its evolution.”
is that the project has transformed working ways at the City of Lokeren
“Being on the cloud really changes the way you work
especially for us in the IT department,” explains Vyvey
“It saves up so much time in terms of updates and server management
freeing up the equivalent of a system engineer’s work day to focus on making meaningful changes and implementing more.”
He particularly emphasizes improvements on the security and monitoring side
we operate under strict regulation when it comes to our citizens and their data,” he adds
“This is getting much easier for us courtesy of our new dashboards
which give us a far better overview of what’s happening in the network
“And it’s also helping us to shift from a reactive to a proactive approach.”
He stresses the importance of this particular shift
whenever we would be targeted by ransomware
it would have taken us a while to detect it – and by that time it would already have wreaked havoc in our system,” he explains
“That’s something that we’ve improved significantly since being on the cloud
These kinds of threats no longer go unnoticed
which allows us to block them right away and investigate more efficiently than ever
“We’re finally at a point where even though the threat is still real
we are much more confident that the necessary measures are in place to better protect our end users and give the IT department the required vulnerability insights.”
One of the most satisfying aspects of the City of Lokeren’s migration
is seeing how it’s reflected onto the wider workplace culture
“Most of the people in our organization are loving the new technologies and have adopted them very easily,” claims the latter
“They’ve simply made life so much easier for everybody.”
For the few who are still finding their way around the new system
the IT department has put in place a range of training sessions aimed at building their trust towards the cloud
Multi-Factor Authentication is taking a bit of time to get used to – particularly for those who only use their emails on mobile apps and not computer,” he adds
that’s changing already with a bit of training and support.”
Citizens are noticing these improvements too
“We have a range of apps that now run on Azure and which are proving so much easier to monitor and work,” he continues
for example: people can now raise tickets and be certain that they’ll be forwarded to the right people and departments right away
There is much more seamlessness in the way we handle them now.”
External communications have also improved thanks to Teams Phone
which everyone was queuing to use all the time,” he explains
we have about four or five people who are manning Teams telephones and routing the calls
looking up the tickets and connecting citizens with their designated helpdesks.”
is ultimately the purpose of the entire project: simplifying the lives of employees and the people they serve
“Cloud technology is a concept that’s often hard to grasp,” he says
The benefits are just so vast that what it is or where it exists simply no longer matter.”
“Microsoft Teams was one of the biggest game changers for us
It allowed us to host meetings wherever we wanted
simplify our operations and be more efficient.”
We are Microsoft Empowering others Our mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the family and friends of Mertens
engaging audiences throughout the 90-minute Ruben Block show by changing looks and relying now and then on the element of surprise
along with the clever use of his rig’s 18 EPIX Strip IP fixtures
“The whole idea for this tour was working with shadows and different contrast with lights on the backdrops and on the artist himself,” said Van Lokeren
“There a lot of different effects coming from Ruben and his guitar in the songs
and this blended perfectly with the shadow idea I had in mind with cold colours.”
“I positioned lights in different places around and in front of Ruben so I could play with the size of the shadow and work with different kind of shadows that suited perfectly for some songs,” continued Van Lokeren
“Because there was only one person on stage
I felt I needed to point attention to the artist in the centre with the strips
and less to the surroundings of the stage.”
The use of dark space and EPIX fixtures flanking Block
helped Van Lokeren focus his entire attention on the award-winning star
“This really sucked me in to each song,” he said
“There was no distraction only the right light on the right spot to create the right atmosphere.”
Lokeren commented: “The reason for these fixtures was simple: Ruben is the only artist on stage
The look of the EPIX around him suited things perfectly when the songs became more intense
Turning the strips on and off was very effective in changing the atmosphere on stage.”
The EPIX STRIP IP fixtures helped Lokeren add his desired element of surprise to the show
“I liked doing a build-up for the show with lights
“For the first three songs I did not used the EPIX Strips
then when song four started they were the only lights on — and they lit up the entire stage
This resulted in the kind of ‘wow’ effect that I really envisioned creating to support this great artist when I began the design.”

Belgian defender Gregory Mertens died on Thursday
three days after collapsing while playing for Lokeren's reserve side
Mertens suffered heart failure on the pitch and received CPR before being transported to a hospital in Genk
Lokeren confirmed the 24-year-old died on Thursday afternoon
The club said doctors tried to operate on the player on Tuesday

we announce the passing of Gregory Mertens."
A statement on Lokeren's website hailed Mertens for his "quiet modesty" and said it would assist Mertens' family in any way possible
"Now we will have to learn to live with the loss," the statement said
club doctor Kris Peeters said previous tests on Mertens' heart revealed nothing unusual
"Gregory Mertens' heart has undergone extensive tests," Peeters told RTL
and it's necessary to be able to play in the Europa League
This very unfortunate incident could not have been predicted
"Gregory Mertens is an elite athlete and is only 24 years old
That makes things difficult to accept and to understand for a lot of people."
Michael Vanthourenhout (Bingoal-Pauwels Sauzen) added a first Belgian championship title to his palmares in an epic edition in Loenhout
The European champion cemented his status as top-mudder by riding Laurens Sweeck (Crelan-Fristads) off his wheel in the final lap
Sweeck seemed to have the measure of Vanthourenhout but
one small mix-up in the material zone proved to be enough to swing the race in favour of the Bingoal rider after all the other competitors had fallen behind
"I'm very happy," Vanthourenhout said to Sporza
"It was really a nice duel between me and Laurens
In the last lap I felt that it was gradually running out
so I tried to be the first to get out of the run
Thibau Nys (Baloise Trek) took the hole shot in hopes of being a contender for his first elite national title
the son of the great Sven Nys took a tumble in the opening minutes and found himself chasing in third the rest of the race
Eli Iserbyt (Bingoal-Pauwels Sauzen) also crashed in the first lap and took a while to pick himself up and could do no better than fourth
The race was then between Sweeck and Vanthourenhout
Sweeck and Vanthourenhout traded turns attacking on the mud-strewn course
with a critical moment coming on the penultimate lap when both riders came into the pits for fresh bikes
Vanthourenhout came into the pit first and Sweeck
nearly crashed into the discarded bike and the delay gave Vanthourenhout a few seconds advantage
and although the Crelan-Fristads rider closed down the gap
I really had to give all my strength to reconnect," Sweeck said. "The course was a bit slippery and more treacherous
because I don't think it went completely sportingly,” Sweeck said
complaining that Vanthourenhout's mechanics had switched positions in the pits
“I think we were evenly matched. [Vanthourenhout] deserves it in that respect. But I think you choose a [mechanic's] box before the start and you stay in it for the entire race.
"I think tactically I made a good choice to be in the beginning. You saw that on the first lap
when I made a gap there. Then you come in the second round in the pits and then suddenly the opposition is in the same place as you
while they were at the back before. I don't know why there are rules that are not followed."
Sweeck was briefly held up twice. "That too. It was a bit deliberate from [Vanthourenhout's mechanic]
The bike… You feel that as a rider that this happens. That is still a bit much of course
but as I say: there are rules. They are made to be followed."
Vanthourenhout denied anything was done intentionally
"That always happened behind my back," said Vanthourenhout

Urbanism and preoccupation with private property have led to land being consumed to the point that Belgium is now one of the most dense and dispersed areas in Europe. BLAF have since long contributed to the general awareness of this “genetic” condition by experimenting with its most basic component: the single family house.

Erwin Van Lokeren was cut off from live tours during the COVID-19 lockdown
he was beginning work on an upcoming tour by his longtime client
With the world of touring turned away from him
Van Lokeren had time to think about design and what he sees as one of its core meanings
a time to allow “creativity to run free and build up.”
the result of this creative incubation was revealed during Racoon’s arena show at Rotterdam Ahoy
as Van Lokeren and his Co-designer and Systems Technician
Bert Ploegh transformed the stage with an evocative
mesmerising light show created with the help of CHAUVET Professional Maverick
STRIKE and EPIX fixtures supplied by Splendit
we had a lot of time to create and try new things,” said Van Lokeren
I always want to translate music into visual components; it is a big part of my role as a designer.”
Just as music weaves its way through different contours and changes its mood often during the same song
so too did Van Lokeren and Ploegh’s lighting design evolve and flow with every note
emotional mood is created with UV light from the top and a red band of low light running across the upstage deck
there is a rush of specials from the rig’s Maverick MK3 Profile
The designers used 93 Maverick MK1 Profile fixtures
relying on them for a variety of functions
“They were perfect with a lot of output,” said Van Lokeren of the 820-watt LED fixture
“This was a big point for us in this venue
We needed a good fixture that could easily control the colour temperature.”
A group of 50 EPIX Strips also contributed to the distinctive looks on stage
Arranged on the stage floor in a square around the band
they provided up-lighting in addition to making the entire stage glow
“For fans seated in the upper level of the arena
they provided an amazing look,” said Van Lokeren
The geometric effect on the stage deck was only one of the unique touches Van Lokeren and Ploegh added to this design
They also created a captivating sense of dimensionality to the overall stage panorama by positioning his video panels behind a transparent backdrop
“For this stadium show I wanted to do something with a backdrop in combination with video,” said Van Lokeren
“I’m not a big fan of video panels being out there in the open when they’re not being used
So for this show we placed them behind the backdrop
and we have the full use of the backdrop throughout.”
The video/backdrop arrangement “perfectly suits this show,” said Van Lokeren
who notes that it represents a “new kind of thinking” for him

The residential volume replaces the farm's now-demolished original house
slotting with ease underneath the existing barn's roof
the buildings are not allowed to physically connect
so although the two volumes appear to join they do not affect each other structurally
internal openings and light shafts shed plenty of natural light throughout and bring the surrounding green landscape into the house
located at the junction where the old and new volumes meet
The easterly light that permeates the barn in the morning is funnelled into the kitchen through an internal skylight
A corridor divides the building into two distinct spaces: one hosts a monochromatic dining and living area; the other contains the owners' office and storage facilities
The farmhouse features spacious office and storage facilities that look out across the garden
The overall character of Lokeren House was informed by the barn's existing materials and colour palette
a 'wooden ribbon' of timber cladding envelopes the ground floor of the new structure
The ribbon extends around the sides of the barn
occasionally opening up to reveal floor-to-ceiling windows and the main entrance
the wooden ribbon morphs into a decked terrace
the first floor houses the bathrooms and three bedrooms
Both the material and colour refer to the traditional ceramic-tiled roof of the barn

An evening that began with optimism concluded in despair as Hull’s 10 men – Yannick Sagbo was sent off midway through the second period – could not muster a precious third goal that would have sent them through to the group stages
Progression would have provided an extra six matches before Christmas but
despite the strain that would have put on Steve Bruce’s resources and the primary objective of retaining Premier League status
Ultimately, it was an uncharacteristic error by their Scottish international goalkeeper, Allan McGregor, in Belgium a week earlier that denied them
although the fine margins between success and failure were emphasised when the substitute Tom Huddlestone’s fierce last-gasp drive was spectacularly cleared off the line by Denis Odoi
“That’s what playing in Europe is: disappointments
“We have won the match and gone out but if I am being honest we haven’t played to the level I expected
gave the ball away far too cheaply and four or five were below the level
It’s disappointing for everybody concerned because it’s the first time the club’s been in it.”
Hull were provided with the perfect start when Maynor Figueroa scooped the ball across the area for Robbie Brady to bundle in a crowd-pleasing
At that stage their first European competition in 110 years of existence appeared to have legs
The mood was lifted further at half-time when their most recent acquisition
the former Tottenham central defender Michael Dawson
Bruce reflected in his programme notes that players of Dawson’s calibre showed Hull’s squad was now “light years ahead” of where it was two Augusts ago
Things may go positively intergalactic in the next 24 hours
who recently turned down Benfica’s advances
likely to become Hull’s first £10m player in a move from the Italian side Palermo
it is only a matter of securing a work permit for a man with seven goals in 14 international appearances
the atmosphere around the KC Stadium became tetchy quickly as Lokeren scored a dramatic equaliser four minutes into the second half
Although Killian Overmeire’s 30-yard thunderbolt of a free-kick was tipped over by McGregor
failure to deal with the resulting corner led to Jordan Remacle arrowing his pinpoint shot into the angle of post and bar
Parity lasted a matter of moments before Hull were awarded a penalty after Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross was adjudged to have been handled by the Lokeren midfielder Koen Persoons
Brady stepped up to send goalkeeper Davino Verhulst the wrong way but Hull were still one short
Bruce’s reaction was to throw on another forward midway through the second period but the introduced Nikica Jelavic soon lost his strike partner when Sagbo was sent off for a challenge on the midfielder Giorgios Galitsios
there is no way you would get sent off in the Premier League for that,” said Bruce
“He stays on his feet and doesn’t go over the ball at all.”

When San Francisco police said they couldn't spare an officer to arrest a man suspected of stealing Tom Van Lokeren's credit cards and checks
the 47-year-old North Beach tax accountant took matters into his own hands
Van Lokeren bought a large fishing net at Fisherman's Wharf
some pepper spray and a stun gun at a military surplus store and then lured the suspect into a trap on a busy downtown street
"I made four attempts to get the police to do their job," said Van Lokeren
I'm going to go ahead with this,' and they said
On May 30, Lokeren and his nephew used the stun gun and pepper spray to ambush and arrest James Timothy Stevens -- but not without a struggle and foot chase down Mission Street
then I used the pepper spray," Van Lokeren said
Stevens was knocked into a liquor store's glass door
When the police were summoned by a call to 911
the 21-year-old transient was booked on two felony charges related to the thefts
The incident left both Van Lokeren and San Francisco police officials shaking their heads in disbelief -- for different reasons
Van Lokeren is upset that police at Central Station merely wrote up a report on the thefts and refused to go out and arrest Stevens
Fraud Detail inspectors wouldn't help either
"I served this guy up on a silver platter for these guys," Van Lokeren said of the police
"They are just so jaded and desensitized to crime."
A nephew, Paul Van Lokeren
assisted in the arrest and expressed dismay at the lack of police help
saying: "They are basically just report-takers
Central Station Capt. James L. Dudley
whose officers took Van Lokeren's report and refused to assist in the arrest
He was unaware of Van Lokeren's repeated requests for assistance
but his officers are constantly busy responding to calls that often involve emergencies and violent crime
Setting up a stakeout for a suspect in a property crime case is not something the SFPD usually can do
"It's not a life-threatening situation," the captain said
turning a property crime into a potentially violent confrontation
"You don't put yourself in harm's way because you don't like the way the police handled it
What if this guy did have a gun -- and you only have net," Dudley said
"We certainly don't encourage the public to make their own arrest
Tom Van Lokeren's venture into vigilantism began May 29 when his credit card company called about some unusual recent purchases at a Berkeley DJ shop
He learned that two credit cards were missing from his home office
a drifter who had recently befriended his nephew
Stevens had stayed for a while in the North Beach flat Van Lokeren and the nephew share
Paul Van Lokeren recalled seeing Stevens use a credit card in the Berkeley DJ shop
The uncle and nephew found that Stevens had left behind a duffel bag containing a half dozen pieces of identification for various men and women
They went to Central Station with this evidence at 2:45 a.m
and told them Stevens was wanted on a $50,000 grand theft arrest warrant in San Diego County and two warrants in San Bernardino County for receiving stolen property
Later that morning Paul Van Lokeren got a call from Stevens, asking if he could retrieve his duffel bag. They arranged to meet at 2:30 p.m. at the Metreon at Fourth and Mission streets
Tom Van Lokeren said he went back to Central Station and told officers of the opportunity to arrest the man
"They said they can't stake a place out -- what if the guy doesn't show up?" Van Lokeren said
The officers referred him to SFPD's fraud detail
where an inspector said the police report had not yet arrived and that he should go back to Central Station and try again to get a patrol officer to help
Van Lokeren decided he'd have to catch the man himself
then went back to Central Station and asked again for help
"I said I've gotten all these things
but I don't want to do this by myself
One officer said he would try to make it to the Metreon
He suggested calling 911 when Stevens was spotted
The officers wished him "good luck" as he left the station
Dudley said the correct advice was given: "The officer was right saying to call 911 when the guy shows up."
the Van Lokerens and Tom's girlfriend gathered on Mission Street
Their plan was to call Stevens on his cell phone and lure him out of the Metreon
But first they tried again for police help
They waved down a passing patrol car and asked the officers for help
"They said they were on another call," Tom Van Lokeren said
they called Stevens out onto Mission Street
Tom Van Lokeren ran up behind him and stun-gunned and pepper-sprayed the man
Paul Van Lokeren used his own pepper spray
stop him,' " Tom Van Lokeren said
"Some homeless guy with one leg in a wheelchair sticks out his leg and almost trips him up," said Paul Van Lokeren
"Another guy bodychecks him into a liquor store door."
Stevens was placed under citizen's arrest
Tom Van Lokeren's credit cards were found near the liquor store's broken glass door
Stevens later told police the whole fraud scheme was the nephew's idea
SFPD fraud Inspector Martin Dito said Stevens is being held on charges of possessing fraudulent identification and possessing stolen property
"I'm definitely getting action now," said Tom Van Lokeren
"But I wouldn't be getting any action without my citizen's arrest."
