Steve Lommel is many things: A William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of plant virology. A champion of the life sciences. An architect of impactful interdisciplinary programs. In his nearly 40 years with NC State University, the last 12 as associate dean for research in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and director of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service (NCARS) Lommel’s leadership and vision has helped the university strengthen and extend vital research Lommel announced he will retire in July 2025.  “CALS will miss Steve’s leadership and unflinching dedication to furthering research efforts of the college,” says Garey Fox dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences “Steve ensured that CALS thrives as a research and development hub for the state’s life sciences and biotech industries We will build on the foundation he established during his tenure and ensure that our research continues to drive economic prosperity in North Carolina.” Lommel joined what was then the Department of Plant Pathology He taught courses on biotechnology and DNA sequencing and ran an accomplished research program in which he was part of the team that first sequenced the tobacco genome he held the largest grant at the university and discovered ways of using viruses to deliver cancer therapies Yet Lommel felt drawn to a leadership role where he could  expand the college’s research footprint more than he could do as one faculty member As the assistant director of NCARS in 1992 Lommel was brought in to represent the life sciences disciplines of the college at the time Lommel moved up to assistant and associate vice chancellor for research at the university level establishing core facilities and prioritizing faculty retention “Working in the vice chancellor’s office gave me a broader view of the resources and priorities of the university and showed me how much we could accomplish when we work with other colleges It really cemented my belief in the power of interdisciplinary collaboration,” Lommel says In 2013, Lommel became the CALS research station director and associate dean for research. He came in with the revolutionary idea for a state-of-the-art building to support interdisciplinary plant science. That idea would grow to become the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative (N.C which Lommel says is the crowning achievement of his career Lommel has helped build out the Genome Sciences Lab core facility the proteomics facility and the electron microscope facility He even helped launch the Kannapolis campus while overseeing the Plants for Human Health Institute Lommel says he will miss building things — big interdisciplinary things like the N.C grant training programs and other assets that will have a lasting impact on the university’s success far beyond his tenure In retirement, Lommel will complete his role as chair of AgInnovation for the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities and invest more time in his duties on various boards playing golf and spending more time at his cabin in the mountains with his wife and dog Dean Garey Fox is committed to a smooth transition as Lommel prepares for retirement A national search for a new associate dean of research and director of NCARS will begin this spring NC State is an equal opportunity institution. S., Llinas, R. R., Lozano, A. M., Neimat, J. S., and Zemmar, A. (2022). Front. Aging Neurosci. 14:813531. doi: 10.3389/fnagi.2022.813531 We read with great interest in recent article by Vicente et al. (2022) that described continuous electroencephalography (EEG) recording in an 87-year-old patient who unexpectedly suffered a cardiac arrest after traumatic bilateral subdural hematoma and status epilepticus The authors reported that brainwaves in the delta but a higher percentage of relative gamma power was observed compared to the interictal interval and cross-frequency coupling revealed modulation of left-hemispheric gamma activity by alpha and theta rhythms We greatly appreciated the authors' caution in writing that “Given that cross-coupling between alpha and gamma activity is involved in cognitive processes and memory recall in healthy subjects it is intriguing to speculate that such activity could support a last ‘recall of life’ that may take place in the near-death state” (2022 We also appreciate their acknowledging that the lack of any normal brain electrical activity recorded from the patient that could serve as a baseline for comparison cast doubts on any interpretation of the findings (2022 while we agree that this case report is intriguing we wish to raise some questions about the interpretation and the implications of their data The authors reported that there was a temporary increase in gamma power when bilateral hemispheric activity ceased but that it declined after what they described as cardiac arrest the EEG recorded from this patient did not show an increase in absolute gamma activity after cardiac arrest but rather showed a reduction in absolute gamma waves It was only the relative amount of gamma that was increased compared to alpha Vicente et al. (2022) noted that increased gamma power and long-range gamma synchronization have been identified in conscious perception; but they have also been found across the neocortex in association with a wide variety of brain circumstances (Muthukumaraswamy, 2013) ranging from ongoing tonic pain (Schulz et al., 2015) to preparation for and execution of movements (Ulloa, 2022) discerningly listed several reasons not to place too much importance on this one patient's EEG: the patient's traumatic brain injury and subdural hematoma the anesthesia-induced loss of consciousness the dissociative drugs given to the patient the anticonvulsant drugs to control his seizures and the patient's asphyxia and hypercapnia These confounding variables raise questions about the interpretation of the relative increase in gamma oscillations seen following cardiac arrest in this patient and showed continued ECG activity past the moment marked in the figure as the time of the cardiac arrest the patient had not in fact experienced cardiac arrest but was still having ECG activity In a prospective research study, Norton et al. (2017) monitored continuous EEG and cardiac function in four intensive care unit (ICU) patients after life-sustaining therapy was withdrawn Three of those four patients showed EEG inactivity (defined as amplitude of <2 μV following recommended guidelines for EEG testing in brain death) prior to the cessation of arterial blood pressure and ECG activity; the fourth patient showed infrequent single delta bursts for more than 10 min after electrocardiographic cessation More recently, Matory et al. (2021) studied continuous EEG recording from 19 ICU patients who died from heart attacks despite receiving treatment Two of the 19 had some brief EEG activity (for up to 2 min) following the last QRS complex recorded in the ECG and 11 showed EEG activity briefly (for <5 min) after blood flow to the brain had ceased as estimated by blood pressure and heart rate falling below set thresholds full-spectrum log power and coherence both decreased on EEG whereas delta and theta permutation entropy increased In summary, we agree with Vicente et al. (2022) that the case they described is intriguing enough to stimulate speculation and we believe it warrants further into brain function throughout the terminal state and agree to be accountable for the content of the work The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest All claims expressed in this article are solely those of the authors and do not necessarily represent those of their affiliated organizations Any product that may be evaluated in this article or claim that may be made by its manufacturer is not guaranteed or endorsed by the publisher The authors gratefully acknowledge the helpful input of Edward F Ross Dunseath in the preparation of this manuscript Electroencephalographic changes during brief cardiac arrest in humans Changes in cerebral oxygen uptake and cerebral electrical activity during defibrillation threshold testing Volume expansion during cardiopulmonary resuscitation reduces cerebral no-reflow Surface Laplacian of central scalp electrical signals is insensitive to muscle contamination EMG contamination of EEG: spectral and topographical characteristics PubMed Abstract | CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Electroencephalographic monitoring of cerebral function during asystole and successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation Recovery of brain function during induced cerebral hypoperfusion Electrocerebral signature of cardiac death EEG monitoring during cardiac arrest and resuscitation PubMed Abstract | CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Muthukumaraswamy High-frequency brain activity and muscle artifacts in MEG/EEG: a review and recommendations Electroencephalographic recordings during withdrawal of life-sustaining therapy until 30 minutes after declaration of death Near-death experiences in cardiac arrest: visions of a dying brain or visions of a new science of consciousness Relation of gamma oscillations in scalp recordings to muscular activity Prefrontal gamma oscillations encode tonic pain in humans The control of movements via motor gamma oscillations PubMed Abstract | CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Near-death experiences: the experience of the self as real and not as an illusion Enhanced interplay of neuronal coherence and coupling in the dying human brain van Lommel P and Fenwick P (2022) Commentary: Enhanced Interplay of Neuronal Coherence and Coupling in the Dying Human Brain Received: 18 March 2022; Accepted: 04 April 2022; Published: 18 May 2022 Copyright © 2022 Greyson, van Lommel and Fenwick. Gajser continues to hold the red-plate maintaining a 24-point lead as they leave the MXGP of Flanders after his five-four results in the deep sand of Lommel After qualifying third in yesterday’s race the Honda CRF450R rider was able to get two decent starts in today’s GP-scoring motos which gave him good track position and made things slightly easier for the 35 minutes plus two laps at Lommel – possibly the toughest motocross track on the planet it took the Slovenian a couple of laps to find his groove and by lap five he was back into fifth place but he never really looked completely comfortable and wasn’t able to make a move on the rider in fourth place despite pressuring him for the majority of the race with the #243 into third early on and keeping pace with the leaders keeping your momentum high is a difficult challenge in the deep sand and near the end he had to relinquish a position and ended up just missing out on the podium as a result His 34-point total still means he holds the red-plate with six rounds remaining but he’ll be hoping for much more when they line up again in a couple of weeks’ time at the Uddevalla track in Sweden MX2After fighting through the field in the qualification race yesterday Team HRC’s Ferruccio Zanchi powered around the first turn inside the top five and set about tracking the riders in front he held a good pace and looked like he would get his first ever MX2 podium result the treacherous Lommel track finally took its toll and he dropped down to seventh Hoping to show that same speed in race two he unfortunately got caught up in the deep second turn and had to remount in last position Showing that same determination as yesterday he was able to fight his way through the field to 12thbefore he received the chequered flag but once again he was left ruing what might have been He now has a weekend off before the series resumes in Uddevalla Sweden which will be on hard-pack terrain and provide a much different test for the young Italian Bradley Mesters is quietly having a strong season despite an injury disrupting his season The Kosak KTM rider started the EMX250 season with fifth overall at Madrid in hard pack and at the latest round of the series in Lommel he ended up fifth overall He even had the red plate in the ADAC Youngsters Cup before his injury We caught up with Mesters to discuss his season so far and more… you can read here at Lommel for the EMX250 series… Overall a very very solid weekend for you and especially the first moto was very good I think you can be happy with your speed and results here at a tough Lommel… I’ve prepared quite long for this race I was looking forward to it actually and yesterday was like solid almost second but a bit lost my pace in the last few laps but that was like really good I was looking forward to maybe getting a podium but today just the start… starts were not on point this weekend so two times I had to come from the back and then I struggled a lot to pass Rizzi I lost a bit my momentum because of him and then after I get a bit tired and guys from the back started to catch me and unfortunately I got passed in the last lap P5 overall I think and the speed was there  I just maybe need some better starts and some better physical condition and I will be on the podium so that’s something to look forward to for next year GateDrop: How did you find the track both days Yesterday for Lommel it actually wasn’t that rough and pretty fast although kind of slippery too… Today looked very very rough and Lommel like we know it… Mesters: Yesterday you also see like some guys who don’t really belong on the front but because the track was like so flat and fast everybody can go fast Today was like way more heavy and way less speed so yeah you see many guys start to go slower and slower or lose pace I think I give it a bit too much in the beginning because I needed to come from far behind so that’s why I struggled a bit in the last few laps but overall the fitness is not that bad GateDrop: At the first round of the EMX250 series in Madrid I think you were really really impressive there with a fifth overall You must have been really happy with that because everyone was there at the first round and also it’s hard park so what did you expect coming into the season Mesters: My goal was actually really to be top five there because the pre-season for me went so well good pre-races like the International Italian championship and Hawkstone fifth overall I was in the morning on Saturday I struggled a bit but turned quite good around o the Sunday I was tenth and a fifth  and almost fourth at the finish line but anyway fifth overall was good this year was it just important to try and make all the races and not get a big injury I know you were injured earlier this year but at least it wasn’t a big injury… Mesters: Last year I almost didn’t ride a bike I just did the opening round and the last round but this year was my goal actually was to be top five in the championship but unfortunately at the German championship I dislocated my shoulder and had a concussion in practise that set me back a bit I feel like I needed quite a lot of time to get back from that injury and also like before was way more easy for me to go the pace where I’m riding now Now I need to work more hard for it but still now all the rounds where I do I just want to be up there or show that I’m a top five rider and go for the podium every round For sure that’s my goal to finish one time on the podium this year for next year I think we will go one more year EMX250 and then go for the title I would say they’re your conditions… Now you have done well in hard pack before but do you still think that’s an area where you need to put more laps in at the training days more hard pack riding or do you feel comfortable in both hard pack and sand Mesters: Of course I’m more comfortable in the sand tracks but I think racing for me doesn’t really matter if it’s a hard pack track and as long as there are lines in it then it’s good for m When it’s getting dry and slick then I struggle a bit but when there’s lines in it then yeah it’s quite the same… Okay not the same but if it’s still technical  When the track is technical I’m good but when it’s fast it’s just a little bit more difficult GateDrop: You signed with the German based team how’s everything going with this team for you and are you based in Germany or you still do your own thing in the Netherlands the bikes are at my home and the engines we do by ourselves I have my own engines and suspension… the team is very free That’s really good and nice from them Kevin (Giedderz) is also a really nice guy he always wants the best for me and always behind me even when the results are not always there But they will always be there to support me and that’s really nice GateDrop: I seen this weekend that Davy Pootjes is actually working with you I didn’t know that until this weekend… How long have you been working with Davy for and he must be able to really help you… obviously he’s been through a lot more than most in the sport… But he was so talented but had a lot of injuries and stuff going wrong… But I’m sure he’s able to help you… now he has helped me for like two months or something We asked him for some help because he’s like what you say he has been on the top and now unfortunately it has stopped him but he was like one of the biggest talents in the sport He’s been through a lot so he can help me with a lot of things that I’ve never been through It’s really helpful for me because he can see things around the track and of course he knows how to ride the bike so it helps me GateDrop: You’re also racing the ADAC championship in Germany how is all that going for you and it also looks like a good series this year the ADAC Youngsters Cup… There’s quite a lot of winners… I have three podiums now there but unfortunately then I dislocated my shoulder I was leading the championship at one point but I lose many points at the round of it because I was not fit there with my shoulder I wasn’t ready but I had two days and of course because I was first in the championship I think we’ve the same points and also the leaders are not that far ahead anymore so you never know what can happen have you got a deal with Kosak yet or is it still up in the air I think you’re still going to be doing the EMX250 though by the sound of it… Mesters: I’m still going to be racing EMX250 next year I think that’s more smart to do because yeah on the 125cc I also stepped up too fast and so I feel that it’s better to stay one more year Then we will see what can do next year but we have not signed yet…  The option is there for me to sign with Kosak so we’ll see as you jumped quickly to the 125cc and stuff I think you were with F&H in the past what was it like being part of that team They’re obviously a professional team and you would have been working with Marc de Reuver there as well… What was that experience like for me of course I was there since an 85cc It was really nice of course to see those MX2 guys there at that time They were up there every weekend so for me it was nice to see that Marco also helped me then of course with the training if you do it alone or with other guys it’s always more easy but yeah it was good time I just think I stepped to quickly to the 250’s but there were some trouble in the team with me so that’s why that happened but it’s passed he’s now your team mate here at Kosak KTM we’ve been team mates like a long time and he’s one of my best friends so now he’s also with this team MXGPTeam HRC’s Tim Gajser put in a solid performance in the deep sands of Lommel Belgium to finish third in the MXGP of Flanders qualification race The Honda CRF450R rider had another excellent start putting him in second round the first bend and that allowed him to avoid the first-lap craziness behind him he followed the leader for a large portion of the race keeping the gap close but never really threatening He did drop a position midway through the moto but the priority on such a difficult track is to keep upright and make sure he avoids any big mistakes and that’s exactly what he was able to do throughout the entire day but with so many riders on the track and the fast line ever-changing it wasn’t always easy to put in a clean hot-lap This didn’t hinder him too much for the start of the qualification race though as his run of good starts continued in the sandy conditions This gave him the perfect platform to score another good points haul which allows him to still lead the 2024 MXGP World Championship by 34pts it seems like conditions will be similar to today but with more races the Lommel track will get even more treacherous and Gajser will have to work hard to get himself on the podium MX2After placing 10th in free and timed practice Ferruccio Zanchi fought through the MX2 field to cross the line in ninth place in the MXGP of Flanders qualification race when he was caught up in a first lap incident and had to remount last but as he has proved on numerous occasions this year the #73 doesn’t mind a challenge and he was soon working his way inside the top 20 By the fourth lap he was already up to 12th and then a couple of laps later he was into 10th with a big gap in front of him to try and close his hard work was rewarded and he was able to score two points and move himself closer to ninth in the championship standings The young Dutch girl is considered the Queen of the sand due to her skills in that type of soil Now the current WMX leader will show that speed against the best MX2 riders at Lommel one of the toughest tracks on the calendar The last women to compete in the MX2 class was Larissa Papenmeier at the MXGP of China in 2019 I get the chance to ride MX2 in Lommel end of this month and I think if you know me you know what I will do I really want to experience what it is like to ride one of the toughest sports in the world in this tough class I have no illusions at all and know that with my 16 years Van Drunen already competed against the boys especially during his early career racing the EMX65 and the EMX85 championships She took a well-earned bronze medal in the EMX85 class in Sardegna The Yamaha des Beats rider also has collected a ton of wins against the boys at local races in Netherlands but I still want to experience what it is like and how tough such a weekend will be I want to see how fit I am and whether I can manage to complete 2 long races in a short period of time Special thanks to @yamaharacingcomofficial @debaetsmxteam and Rinaldi for making this possible.” Giuseppe Tropepe was three turns from winning when ran out of fuel handing Micha-boy De Waal the win. John Adamson took 17th with Jasom Meara 19th just in front Dan Thornhill. Jerre Haavisto took the win despite stalling on the penultimate lap and losing the lead but it was second place Teresak who took the overall win! Jason Meara was in the points again in 18th with John Adamson passing him for 17th on the last lap and Dan Thornhill charging late for 15th. More trophies, more celebrations and continued success in 2024 MXGP for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing as Jeffrey Herlings demonstrated his superlative skill in sandy conditions once again to win a hot and sunny Grand Prix of Flanders at Lommel. The Dutchman went 1-1 at round 14 of 20 to snare his third victory of the year and tenth podium appearance (nine in a row) with the KTM 450 SX-F. Jeffrey Herlings rode to a strong 2nd position on an overcast Saturday and for an exciting RAM Qualification Heat where he almost seized P1. 15 Mar 2025 19:00:00 their last 5 matches Lommel is playing home against SK Beveren on Sat Round 14 of the FIM Motocross World Championship took to the iconic deep sands of Lommel With the series well past the halfway mark came away with their respective overall wins at one of the toughest tracks on the circuit Jorge Prado seemed to be the man to beat early on in both races The reigning MXGP Champion is looking to gain crucial points on series leader Tim Gajser and the GasGas rider grabbed both holeshots on the day Prado checked out early in race one and held a 16-second lead at the halfway mark But KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings had other plans After tangling with a lapper near the halfway point of the race the Dutchman sprinted his way to the back of Prado and passed for the lead with only three laps left in the moto He made the move for first and held off Prado to take the checkers as Prado again crossed the holeshot line first with both Herlings and Gajser outside the top three The number one of Prado ran up front for the first few laps and extended his gap to eight seconds over the next rider A series of mistakes from Prado once again allowed Herlings to close in and make the move at the halfway point From there it was smooth sailing for “The Bullet” as he held the lead to the finish and swept the day with 1-1 results taking his third overall win of the season Prado stayed close and took second overall Febvre and Gajser duked it out for the final spot on the box with the Frenchman gaining the advantage with a third in race two Gajser claimed fourth overall but still leads the championship by 24 points over Prado “First moto I was trying to overtake the same guy a couple of times and ended up hitting him [lapper] and banging my knee,” Herlings said “That meant I had to warm it up and take it a bit easy at the start of the second moto Jorge has been really strong at the start of races so I had to make a rhythm and try not to blow up I passed him and made a little gap and then managed it but I’ve been getting better and better and riding more like my old self.” The MX2 division showcased two up-and-down motos The first moto saw the two Belgian brothers championship leader Kay de Wolf started back in sixth but moved his way to second with a series of passes He moved around the brothers and found himself leading by lap two putting Sacha back up front before he also crashed as he managed to stay upright and take the race win over Rick Elzinga and Camden Mc Lellan Sacha claimed another holeshot in race two with de Wolf back in fifth again made quick passes on the opening lap and found himself stalking the leaders de Wolf passed for the lead but crashed shortly after with a big swap-out He’d remount another charge to the front but suffered yet another crash Rick Elzinga found himself leading the race momentarily with Liam Everts and Simon Laengenfelder hot on his heels Laengenfelder moved around Everts and passed for the top spot de Wolf worked his way back to second on the final lap He earned the overall win with 1-2 finishes and now leads the championship by 65 points over Lucas Coenen and another 12 points over Laengenfelder Elzinga crossed the line fourth but took the final podium spot with 2-4 results “Each weekend we are trying to get as many points as possible and preserve our position at the top of the championship,” said de Wolf “Sometimes that doesn’t mean winning every single moto I have to be critical also because the second moto wasn’t good enough—I made too many mistakes which shouldn’t have happened—so I will for sure be working on that Geerts fractured his left elbow and right clavicle during qualifying at the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championship This resulted in two successful operations and an extensive recovery period After consulting with various medical teams all have confirmed they are satisfied with the healing of the bones and are confident that Geerts is fit enough to return to racing Geerts will need to pass a mandatory medical examination by the FIM Doctor before he is officially declared safe to race Geerts had a strong off-season and was eagerly anticipating the start of his first full season in the premier class as the #93 makes his MXGP class debut once again the main focus will be for the home hero to ease into things without feeling any pressure or expectation “I finally got the green light from my surgeon yesterday confirming that my elbow is fully healed What is important is that I am on the gate so the goal is to have fun on the bike and enjoy the weekend.”  This weekend Antonio Cairoli will be racing the MXGP World Championship at Arnhem as he’s secured a wildcard entry and will make Ducati’s’ first MXGP appearance Ducati will take on the MXGP World Championship on a full time basis next year with two riders as this year they’ve been focusing on bike development with Antonio Cairoli and Alessandro Lupino involved in the project See Cairoli preparing for his MXGP wildcard at the deep sand of Lommel – Motocross Magazine with the footage: Jeffrey Herlings came from sixth to catch Jorge Prado but Prado refused to give in upped his pace and held Herlings off to the flag in a tremendous qualifying race The tough sand of Lommel during the MXGP of Flanders saw the unique round of the European Championship EMX Open and the 7th round of EMX250 Riders had to keep their focus sharp at every give moment as the sand track is known to be one of the most challenging in the world In the EMX Open the gold medal was won by the Czech rider Jakub Teresak who proved to be the most consistent and solid rider over the weekend after impressive rides in the notoriously physical track The EMX250 Championship racing was intense and riders couldn’t afford to make any mistakes on the demanding Belgian track everything was aligned to deliver an amazing round of motocross The demanding conditions at Lommel tested the riders’ skills and determination setting the stage for a weekend of entertaining action and great racing And this was Bedddini GASGAS Factory Juniors’s Valerio Lata with a solid 2-2 who came out on top to win in Belgium his 3rd overall win of the season EMX Open – Teresak wins the gold medal The first race of the EMX Open kicked off with Freek Van Der Vlist taking the holeshot leading ahead of Belgium’s Brent Aerden and Matteo Puffet Puffet ran wide off the track on the opening lap as Jakub Teresak launched a bold move on the inside to take 4th place his performance declined as he made several mistakes Giuseppe Tropepe from Millionaire Racing Team-ABF Italia doing everything right behind fast starter Van Der Vlist on the challenging Lommel sand Micha-Boy De Waal was steadily making his way up the field showcasing great speed and skill getting up to 5th De Waal was finding the best lines to overtake Teresak and Aerden and move up to 3rd while things got harder for Aerden as he couldn’t maintain his good start and finished 11th in the end this was when Tropepe took the lead of Van Der Vlist and started to pull away directly after that pass De Waal also started to attack his Dutch compatriot Van Der Vlist to go 2nd The race seemed set for Tropepe’s victory until heartbreak struck just four corners from the finish line when his bike suddenly stopped Tropepe watched as the riders he had kept at bay for most of the race overtook him shattering his dream of winning the EMX Open with a registered position of 25th in the end De Waal was the big winner of the race as he capitalised on Tropepe’s misfortune to win the first race thanks to his solid ride with Van Der Vlist 2nd and the well-place Estonian Meico Vettik in 3rd after having to make his way up from 12th on lap 1 Teresak was a consistent force riding around the 4th place during the whole race and placing himself for a potential podium in front of Sven Van Der Mierden Jere Haavisto showed a good consistency but could not get better than 8th in the end under a clear sky Haavisto took the lead early on with fast starter Teresak behind him Tropepe who was 4th crashed on the opening lap and this was one of these weekends for the Italian Nico Koch made a good start too as he found himself 3rd with Puffet well placed in 4th and Vettik in 6th De Waal on 7th on lap 3 had to work to put himself on the top step of the podium Van Der Vlist had a poor start as he found himself in 13th on lap 4 and could only got back up to 9th for 5th overall in the end 7th on lap 4 had to make up 2 positions to win it all but took his time to get into the groove as he followed Vettik and Puffet with some smoke concerningly coming off the bike De Waal made the first of his compulsory pass on the Belgium Puffet to get to 6th on lap 5 however a lap later his bike looked like it overheated and came to a complete stop with no chance to get back to it and unfortunately losing the podium Meanwhile Haavisto seemed very comfortable on the terrain as he led Teresak who was going to win the overall with a very good 4-2 and a great consistency Vettik was chasing forward from lap 1 and its 8th position as he constantly moved up throughout the race to finish 4th Right at the moment when we thought that Haavisto was immaculate his bike stalled in the last lap and lost the lead to Teresak and the 2nd overall in the meantime But it was Haavisto’s day as he bravely came back up behind Teresak and directly made his move to take incredibly the lead again with half a lap to go to win the race and step on the 2nd step of the podium The great winner of the weekend though was the Czech Jakub Teresak known in the past for finishing 3rd in 2013 in the Monster Energy FIM Junior Championship behind none other than Conrad Mewse and Hunter Lawrence and in front of Chase Sexton and Jorge Prado This year Teresak is the one on the top step with great racing The Czech becomes the 2024 EMX Open Champion in Lommel and comes out on top of tough competition and a physical track EMX Open Championship – Top 10 Classification: 1 EMX 250 – Lata dominates in the tough sand of Lommel it was Mathis Valin from Bud Racing Kawasaki who took the holeshot but it didn’t take long for Bedddini GASGAS Factory Juniors’s Valerio Lata to seize control after a couple of corners Ghidinelli Racing Team’s Saad Soulimani quickly moved into 2nd place with Francisco Garcia from RFME GASGAS MXJunior Team hot on his heels capitalising on a poorly negotiated turn by Valin The race took an early turn when VRT Yamaha Racing’s Gavin Towers crashed in the first corner and had to retire Cas Valk from Gabriel SS24 KTM faced an uphill battle after a tough start Valin had to regroup and managed to overtake Garcia Soulimani didn’t waste any time launching an attack on Lata and succeeded in taking the lead but this didn’t deter the red plate holder Valin found his rhythm and cleverly passed Lata for 2nd on lap 4 of 13 put pressure on Lata and moved up to 3rd on the same lap Lata and Garcia engaged in a fierce battle on laps 4 and 5 Garcia’s challenge felled flat when he buried his front wheel on lap 6 dropping from 4th to eventually finish 7th KTM Kosak Team’s Bradley Mesters and JM Honda Racing’s Max Werner took advantage of Garcia’s mistake Lata found his way and attacked Soulimani to reclaim 2nd place Valin demonstrated excellent maturity and confidence staying cool and meticulously working his way back to win the race VRT Yamaha Racing’s Ivano Van Erp stayed consistent The performance of the race was undoubtedly from Valk who never stopped believing in his potential for a top finish His relentless determination paid off as he astonishingly finished 4th giving himself a strong chance for an eventual podium The other impressive run was Mesters who finished strongly in 3rd position The start in race 2 was controlled by Lata who made blistering run off the gate Meanwhile Valin was behind in 3rd but pressured by Valk right from the start and lost the 3rd place as Valk dived in to pass Valin and Rizzi for 2nd Still in the opening lap Van Erp started well and found himself 5th in front of Werner Van Erp showed a confident style as he launched a couple of passes on Valin and Rizzi to move up to 3rd while Valk was pulling away with the lead already in lap 2 Valin started to get back to the rhythm we saw in the first race and passed Rizzi on a long jump on the outside to go 4th The gaps between the front 4 were getting around 4 seconds each in lap 4 At that time Lata was winning the overall by 1 point in front of Valk and Valin Valk was immaculate as he pulled away and never seemed to be looking back and winning the race by 14 seconds on Lata and more than 20 seconds on Van Erp 3rd Lata had a couple of scares towards the end which reminded him that this track can be merciless if you’re not always 100% focused Meanwhile Mesters showed up again with an excellent 6th place to go 5th overall and his best finish of the season Rizzi who started great faded during the race and had to finish 7th seeing Mertens and another good performer Nicolai Skobjerg from Wozniak MX Racing Team passing him Skovbjerg finished 5th and Mertens 6th in the end This was a solid round for the Van Erp who finished 4th overall with an excellent second race where he battled at the top In the end the podium was filled by the front three riders in the championship with Valk finishing 2nd overall and Lata winning the round they both reduced the gap with red plate Valin who ended on the 3rd step of the podium the EMX250 is getting more and more exciting as the top 3 riders in the championship are getting closer but the advantage still remains with Mathis Valin at the moment with 13 points ahead of Cas Valk and 18 points on Valerio Lata EMX250 Championship – Top 10 Classification: 1 | Copyright 2025 FIM Europe | Terms of use - Privacy statement | 08 Mar 2025 19:00:00 never made his debut with the Premier League giants Jeffrey Herlings was in fine form at Loket and the second moto showed just how much speed he still has if he needs it The five times world champion spoke to the media after the MXGP to discuss his speed and more… Guadagnini went down and I like jumped over his bike There was one guy he broke super hard and I hit his rear wheel from crashing at the second turn and being dead last When I was behind Bonacorsi he nearly high sided I hit his rear wheel and again I was almost last I fought my way back to the rear wheel of Vlaanderen Luck wasn’t on my side today but with the speed at least I feel like my old self like 2018 and a couple of years ago we have lost some points but there are still a lot of things possible I feel like I am still improving and as you can see It shows the fitness and speed are quite good for me Still seven GP’s to go and a lot is possible so looking forward to the final races What goes through his mind going down twice…  I should have known the guy was going to much slower why I hit him is because I really wanted to get to the front In the first moto I went from fifth to second in like a lap I wanted to do the same things in the second moto to try and make a statement but maybe a bit too much confidence again I got my 200th moto win today so that is pretty special so now let’s move onto Lommel this weekend I missed maybe two or three seasons in total due to injury… 2022 a full season That is why at the beginning of the season I was a bit off because you need to race It just takes a bit of time when you come back from a major injury I am looking forward once again to the rest of the races I feel comfortable and the bike is in a good spot we had really good speed there as well in the deep sand I guess the only thing I really need is two decent starts – top three or top five starts When you are racing guys in P15 and coming through at that speed I still thought I could do a top three and I still almost did a top three I knew that would keep my overall alive but yeah
