Reardon had held dozens of companies in his name that owed money to nearly 100 former employees accrued $100,000 in fines for labor violations and had code violations that led Bangor officials to condemn a section of a local mall as a condition of his three-year supervised release Reardon was prohibited from being self-employed and instead required to maintain employment by a disinterested third party the Bangor Daily News found that he had resumed property management and landlord duties in defiance of the judge’s order Reardon’s probation officer told the court that Reardon also was not complying with a requirement to provide truthful financial disclosures Walker sent Reardon back to prison to serve a nine-month sentence for his violations to be followed by 25 months of supervised release Reardon had to continue to not work for himself (Reardon unsuccessfully appealed Walker’s decisions One of Reardon’s appeals — of Walker’s denial of Reardon’s request for the judge to recuse himself — is still pending After Reardon completed his second prison sentence and served roughly half of his most recent term of supervised release he asked Walker in March to allow him to be self-employed once again Reardon wrote in his court filing that it would better allow him to repay his $60,316 restitution that he had been on release for nearly a year without any issues and that he wanted to stabilize his financial situation for his family including his five children and aging parents Attorney Andrew Lizotte opposed Reardon’s request writing in a court order on April 29 that he wanted to lessen the burden on Reardon and allow him to increase his income “I also perceive that the total prohibition of self-employment has posed special difficulties for Reardon to the extent that he has historically earned income through rental properties Reardon has worked to comply with the requirement for roughly one year and I am persuaded that he has demonstrated personal progress in this regard,” Walker wrote the judge emphasized that Reardon can only be self-employed in the business of rental property ownership and management He cannot open any new businesses except as necessary to reestablish himself in the rental market Walker ordered Reardon to continue to be employed by a disinterested third party even if he resumes self-employment Reardon did not answer questions about the judge’s order or his work plans Media coverage had been difficult for him and his family “Once time allowed to be self-employed again maybe you could write about the good things that I do and the buildings that I rehabilitate and turn into good housing,” he added Senior leaders cannot afford to stand still Strategic leadership has become more complex blending classic business thinking with digital know-how and AI-led decision-making Leaders are expected to drive transformation across functions and move fast—while keeping the bigger picture in focus That’s not a distant concern; Systemic autoimmune diseases may include rheumatoid arthritis (RA), seronegative spondyloarthritis (SpA), and autoimmune connective tissue diseases (CTDs), whereas Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT), type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) and Graves’ disease (GD) are considered organ-specific diseases Autoimmune diseases are triggered by genetic and environmental factors that activate the immune system through various mechanisms including the production of interferon type I post-translational modification of proteins T- and B-lymphocytes are involved in the manifestation of autoimmune diseases as demonstrated by the synthesis of autoantibodies against self-antigens also damage tissues through the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines the MD recommends a moderate consumption of red meat Previous studies have highlighted the potential of MD in modulating inflammation due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties The MD has also been shown to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria Several studies have reported the beneficial effects of various MD components on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) the intake of oily fish rich in ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) as well as various fruits and vegetables containing different classes of bioactive compounds has been shown to mitigate the effects of certain autoimmune diseases The high intake of fiber enhances the proliferation of fermenting bacteria which produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate Multiple studies have confirmed the anti-inflammatory properties of SCFAs and their ability to alleviate oxidative stress and chemotaxis of immune cells by enhancing the number of Treg cells and the release of interleukin-10 (IL-10) a recent clinical trial also revealed that ω-3 PUFA supplementation could positively impact the progression of RA by suppressing the levels of inflammatory cytokines and reducing the production of leukotriene B4 (LTB4) by neutrophils Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) contains a wide range of bioactive compounds Several preclinical studies have investigated the potential anti-inflammatory properties of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) and its components a typical phenolic component of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) exhibits preventive effects against rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Likewise a mouse model of pristane-induced systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) showed that EVOO consumption inhibited the release of nitric oxide (NO) and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) recently reported that individuals who consume a pro-inflammatory diet had higher levels of total T4 and total T3 HT patients adhering to an anti-inflammatory diet exhibited lower TSH levels Higher adherence to MD also improved thyroid autoimmunity and related dysfunction a randomized clinical trial (RCT) revealed that patients with RA who underwent the MD intervention for 12 weeks exhibited a significant reduction in their disease activity score on 28 joints (DAS28) compared to controls These patients also experienced improvements in cardiometabolic parameters Encouraging adherence to the MD could serve as an effective cost-efficient lifestyle approach to reduce the burden of autoimmune disorders in modern societies.” The synergistic effect of individual MD components may be sufficient to mitigate the inflammatory processes that occur during autoimmune conditions thus supporting the incorporation of this dietary approach into the management of autoimmune diseases and their complications have confirmed the potential of MD as a complementary tool for managing rheumatic and thyroid autoimmune diseases; however combining MD with exercise has the potential to provide more robust and durable commercial farm data and grower assessment of a new way to manage a destructive vegetable crops pest Swede midge is an invasive insect that causes significant economic damage in the brassica family of crops Cornell Cooperative Extension Vegetable Specialists Elisabeth Hodgdon and Christy Hoepting conducted on-farm field trials testing Hoepting’s theorized approach of using ground barriers over swede midge-infested soil to prevent the pest’s spring emergence “These Northern New York Agricultural Development Program-funded trials in 2024 produced the first season-long data and grower assessment of the use of a ground barrier for swede management The data indicates that ground barriers can play a valuable role in suppressing the soilborne phase of swede midge and may be especially useful for organic growers,” said Hoepting Growers participating in the trials at farms in Jefferson and Essex counties had experienced as much as 100 percent of crop loss to swede midge prior to the trials funded by the farmer-driven NNYADP The tiny fly lays eggs in the growing points of brassica vegetables Larval feeding damages plants so they are unmarketable The larvae overwinter in the soil to emerge the following spring and produce multiple generations until a killing frost Growers Appreciate Trial Results At Chicory Hill Farm in Antwerp silage tarp was deployed over ground where nearly 100 percent of the broccoli crop was lost to swede midge in 2023 the tarp was applied from mid-April to July 22 No swede midge damage was recorded in June “Even with the damage we saw in 2024 it was still less overall than that we experienced in 2023.” “It is not uncommon for swede midge traps to capture 100 to 200 midges per week trap captures in our field trials at all the participating farms did not exceed 50 midges.” swede midge damaged approximately 80-90 percent of the organically-grown kale crop at Riverside Farm in Cape Vincent the ground barrier trial there placed silage tarp over the past year’s infested kale bed from April into mid-July Swede midge damage ranged from none in June to 32 percent in October with an increase of 44 percent mid-season in July some of the kale plants appeared to have outgrown early swede damage resulting in fewer symptoms in October versus July,” Hodgdon says “This trial showed us that using a ground barrier is one more practice we can use in an integrated pest management system.” organic vegetable producer Sara Kurak has battled swede midge for 10 years the pest damaged nearly 100 percent of the sprouting broccoli and approximately 10 percent of kale Full and By Farm deployed landscape fabric over ground that had been infested with swede midge in 2023 Swede midge counts exceeded the established economic threshold of 7 males per week only twice The count peaked at only 8 percent in August “All three growers perceived the use of ground barriers as useful for managing swede midge as part of an integrated pest management program Sara also used floating row cover over most of her brassica crops to manage flea beetles during each crop cycle and so the impact of the ground barrier must be considered in tandem,” Hodgdon points out Research Now Expanding in NNY and Statewide in 2025 In Hoepting’s research landscape fabric was slightly more effective than silage tarp for reducing swede midge damage in trials measuring impact on swede midge emergence from soil following ground barriers application landscape fabric resulted in greater suppression of midges versus silage tarp This may explain the results at the Essex County farm that used landscape fabric versus the Jefferson County farms that used silage tarp Hoepting and Hodgdon secured new funding from the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program to continue the work with vegetable farms in Northern New York and expand on-farm demonstrations of the use of ground barriers for swede midge management statewide Funding for the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program is supported by the New York State Legislature through the New York State Assembly and administrated by the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets Photo at top: Swede midge populations at this farm in Essex County were successfully reduced to only two counts above economic threshold in 2024 after placing landscape fabric over ground impacted by swede midge in 2023 as part of an NNYADP-funded research trial Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" The Adirondack Almanack is a public forum dedicated to promoting and discussing After more than 25 years of counseling businesses on ways to improve worker safety senior risk control manager for Safety National said the one piece of advice he could offer to any size organization wanting to improve their culture of safety is to be good listeners and coach “What really helps drive success around safety is coaching and mentoring,” he told Insurance Journal “When you have an environment where you’re coaching and mentoring your employees and you’re giving them feedback you are going to have an all-star employee,” Simon said That environment keeps employees invested and wanting to excel in their job He advises businesses to really listen to their employees and they should have the most to say about how the job gets done.” Investing in technology and tools that aim to improve safety is great but even large investments in those tools do not guarantee improved safety results some investments are out of reach for small- and medium-sized businesses But if a business prioritizes safety over productivity they will have great results in worker safety That’s not always an easy thing to do “Because every organization has to be profitable and make money … but it’s either pay now or pay later.” be very successful because they prioritize their employees they don’t take shortcuts,” he said and so they come to work and they’re productive they get maximum productivity,” he added “In the 25 years I’ve been doing risk control I’ve seen some amazing clients–insureds who have not used safety technology and yet have a phenomenal fantastic safety program; better than some insureds who are using technology.” Please tell us what we can do to improve this article service directory and conferences for the R&I community Claims management continues to be the dominant use for risk management information systems (RMIS) but organizations are expanding use of the platforms for other purposes such as providing strategic insights to support risk management decisions according to a new report from Redhand Advisors The 2025 RMIS Report Technology Survey of risk management professionals also finds that organizations increasingly are leveraging AI and automation despite integration challenges and budget constraints while the RMIS market shows significant growth with over half of recent implementations being first-time RMIS buyers and 25% of adopting organizations coming from the middle-market segment RMIS platforms are experiencing significant evolution as organizations expand their application beyond traditional uses While claims management remains the dominant use case at 82% the survey shows substantial adoption for incident management (62%) and claims administration (53%) organizations are increasingly implementing these systems for strategic functions like policy management (29%) This shift represents a fundamental transformation from purely transactional systems to strategic tools supporting broader decision-making Organizations increasingly seek platforms that integrate seamlessly with other business applications to create a unified view of risk data across functions like claims The RMIS vendor landscape is responding accordingly with recent enhancements focusing on improved system performance with vendors rolling out redesigned interfaces and expanded options for user-specific dashboards and workflows Reporting capabilities have similarly evolved and flexible ad hoc reporting increasingly infused with AI-driven insights adoption of generative AI within respondents businesses is still in the early stages The survey found that 35% reported being in the early stages of using generative AI in their business 6% reported their business is actively building generative AI applications 11% were exploring pilots or limited applications and 1% said generative AI was fully implemented and 15% were partially implemented Despite growing adoption of risk management technology organizations face significant barriers to implementation The survey identifies implementation and licensing costs (55%) and integration challenges with existing systems (43%) as the top obstacles Employee resistance to change (35%) and uncertainty about ROI (27%) further complicate adoption efforts Data quality inconsistencies and integration issues between systems continue to hamper analytics and reporting capabilities Many organizations also struggle with limited customization options and complex user interfaces that impede adoption and effectiveness create substantial opportunities for innovation “Organizations are looking for RMIS platforms that offer enhanced data integration There is also a growing demand for systems that are more intuitive and provide better support for user training and adoption,” the report stated The results achieved through successful RMIS implementation underscore these opportunities Organizations report better reporting (72%) and increased efficiencies (62%) as the primary benefits Strategic advantages include improved risk analysis (43%) To navigate the complex risk management technology landscape the report recommends that organizations  prioritize several key strategies: “As organizations place greater emphasis on data-driven decision-making RMIS platforms must evolve to become not only systems of record but also strategic tools that enable agility and operational efficiency,” the report’s authors stated Obtain the full report here The latest people news in the industry today Private flood insurance remains underutilized but insurance envisions new technology to meet this misunderstood need Taking place at the prestigious Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City the first edition of ELIS will be held April 27th to 29th 2025 the summit will offer dynamic presentations and interactive panels led by renowned experts This association championed safety education and injury prevention empowering its members to adopt best practices and reduce workplace incidents “We’ve seen a growing number of SEC enforcement actions tied to how companies handle disclosures related to cyber incidents,” said Meredith Brown it’s critical for companies to regularly review and refine their cyber incident response plans and disclosure processes to ensure compliance.” The heightened enforcement has many public companies asking how their insurance coverage would respond — especially as cyber incidents become more complex are stepping up with coverage enhancements designed to address this uncertainty “Traditional cyber policies typically tie regulatory actions to specific privacy events,” Brown said “The trigger is usually a violation of a privacy regulation but SEC regulations are not privacy regulations.” This creates an avenue for enforcement around cyber events that are not contemplated by cyber policies As the SEC steps up its enforcement activity more insureds are likely to submit these types of claims Many of these claims could also have a D&O component as well since SEC actions often name an individual “While D&O policies may cover certain exposures they often don’t address the associated risks and there could be a gap in coverage depending on the focus of the enforcement action,” Brown said public companies must enhance their risk management efforts — especially in the immediate aftermath of a cyberattack While many companies already have incident response plans – in addition to cybersecurity professionals and attorneys who are well versed in breach response – they should consider bringing in legal experts who have experience with SEC disclosure requirements External counsel can help ensure accuracy in disclosures and reduce the risk of increased regulatory attention This support is especially valuable given the relatively recent and still-evolving nature of the SEC’s rules Companies should also closely monitor emerging technologies as the SEC appears to be poised to pursue these types of investigations their risk exposure grows and so must their preparation “The SEC announced a Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit to help protect retail investors,” Brown said “Their focus includes compliance in the use of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence.”  She added “This move reinforces the need for companies to strengthen their incident response frameworks and ensure the proper disclosure of cybersecurity incidents.” To help companies navigate this increasingly complex environment QBE has introduced two new coverage enhancements The first is an SEC Disclosure Costs Coverage This enhancement covers costs associated with engaging external legal counsel to advise on post cyberattack compliance with SEC regulations This coverage is “crucial,” Brown explained because legal experts with SEC experience can help companies understand exactly what is required by the SEC post incident The second is an Enhanced SEC Regulatory Coverage This enhancement provides coverage for violations of SEC regulations—addressing a gap in traditional cyber policies which typically only cover privacy-related regulatory violations “This enhancement directly addresses that gap,” Brown said these additions help companies feel confident they have the coverage they need to protect their businesses as the SEC’s approach continues to evolve.” The response from brokers has already been “very positive,” Brown said indicating the market’s demand for cyber insurance solutions that better protect public companies To learn more, visit: https://www.qbe.com/us/cyber or guarantee regarding the The future oversight over Georgia's multi-billion-dollar Medicaid program is in limbo as companies battle over new management contracts after a lengthy bidding process The medical safety net covered 2.5 million children seniors and people with disabilities in Georgia last year with $5 billion from the state and the rest mostly from the federal government The total is slated to rise to nearly $18 billion next year in the budget that lawmakers sent to Gov Georgia used to manage the Medicaid program directly but about two decades ago the state decided to contract out the work with more companies added through competitive bidding the Kemp administration initiated another competitive bid Two of the three incumbents -- Amerigroup and Peach State Health Plan -- lost along with three newcomers: Humana Employers Health Plan of Georgia Molina Health Care of Georgia and UnitedHealthcare of Georgia The change is prompting concern among doctors and other medical providers who worry about service disruptions when their patients must enroll with one of the new management companies They remember what happened last year when Medicaid recipients had to undergo eligibility redeterminations after the requirement was waived during the COVID-19 pandemic Nearly 300,000 lost coverage after enrollment peaked at more than 2.8 million in 2023 a non-profit in Blue Ridge with a large Medicaid clientele thinks the new contracts will have a similar effect as his patients are forced to enroll with a different company "If they don't have the information or if they aren't able to access the technology that will allow them to sign up or if somehow then there will be people who believe that they have insurance coverage that in fact don't," Miracle said so they're not going to be aware that they have to re-enroll." Miracle's organization is among three dozen represented by the Georgia Primary Care Association drafted an open letter to Georgians in March on behalf of those organizations "This shift introduces a heightened risk of disruption to critical health-care services particularly for those who depend on continuity of care to manage chronic conditions or receive specialized treatments," Grandy wrote adding that colleagues across the state were finding it difficult to negotiate contracts with the new insurers leaving thousands of patients unclear about whether they could continue with their current medical providers "These changes could have devastating consequences for patients and lapses in coverage are not just administrative headaches -- they are life-threatening issues for many Our most vulnerable populations -- children in foster care pregnant women and seniors -- cannot afford to fall through the cracks of an uncertain system," wrote Grandy Grandy said the state might automatically assign existing Medicaid patients to one of the new insurers if they fail to enroll themselves but they might find that their current doctors are out of network radiologists and other specialists might also be out of network and thus inaccessible said patients in rural areas could find it particularly difficult to locate new providers "I’m especially concerned about expectant mothers who will be forced to change doctors mid-pregnancy," she said through a spokeswoman "Many of my rural patients would not have other options close by and would have to travel just to get the care they need the Georgia Department of Administrative Services initiated what's known as a protest period during which the public can raise concerns about the pending contracts sent an email to the agency on March 10 that is among the hundreds of protest-related documents on file She was concerned about the lengthy process that medical offices must go through to ensure their staff can be reimbursed for service "We were able to start credentialing with Molina Health UHC says they have no idea of what the contract is that they won in GA," Oviedo wrote "We can't get through to anyone with UHC to start the process This is alarming as this is one of the largest bids won in GA." nearly two months after she sent that email Oviedo said she still hadn't gotten through to UnitedHealthcare She said she had an initial email exchange with the company wherein an employee said UnitedHealthcare had no contract to manage Medicaid in Georgia Although technically true -- the contracts are on hold until the protests are resolved -- she said the other three bid winners had contacted her to initiate the credentialing process Oviedo said she sent her correspondent at UnitedHealthcare links to articles about the company's winning bid but said she never heard back She said a large portion of her practice serves children in foster care adding that UnitedHealthcare won that portion of the bid She worries that her patients won't have access to insurance and that it will affect her business we don't offer that contract,' " Oviedo said She said she made a lucky guess at an email address that worked "You can sometimes reach somebody that way you can call the rep -- her phone number's right on the email she sent saying UnitedHealthcare had not responded to emails sent by Capitol Beat a week earlier seeking a response Among the protest documents are more serious allegations from the losing bidders for instance that a state evaluator lowered her scores for one company after meeting with her boss suggesting that the boss influenced the outcome; or that state employees and their consultant working on the procurement didn't all fill out the required conflict of interest disclosures Both losing incumbents leveled what is possibly the most serious charge: a direct conflict of interest for CareSource They assert that the company hired away a Georgia Department of Community Health official during the bidding process a woman they said had helped to write the state's procurement competition formally known as an "electronic Request for Proposals," or eRFP That department is the agency responsible for the state's Medicaid program and the management contracts She "undoubtedly would have been privy to confidential information about the development of the eRFP that would have been helpful to CareSource in preparing its proposal," a lawyer for Peach State wrote in a protest document filed last month and at worst reflects "an improper effort by CareSource to gain an unfair competitive advantage." The protest says CareSource should be disqualified A spokeswoman for CareSource said the company had no comment "at this time per the RFP requirements." The protests have apparently delayed the new contracts Peach State's contract was set to expire June 30 which would have required the new contracts to be in place July 1 the president of the Georgia Primary Care Association said he heard the contract date was pushed back initially to next summer and then to the start of 2027 That's fine by Miracle and his medical office in Blue Ridge "Because we've got to get providers credentialed with the new insurance companies We've got to get the organizational relationships set up so that we can do billing collections 'Okay we've got a new company.' Health care is much more complex than that." Results of a new Gartner survey shed light on how supply chain leaders plan to mitigate the potential financial impact of tariffs Forty-five percent of top supply chain executives recently surveyed by Gartner anticipate passing costs to their customers as their primary strategy for mitigating new tariff costs.  Another 43% of respondents stated they would mitigate the costs through various supply chain initiatives as their primary strategy These initiatives include (more than one answer accepted): Exploring collaboration opportunities with suppliers (43%) valuation and other trade management tactics (40%) Adjusting supply locations outside the U.S Adjusting production locations outside of the U.S Respondents were also asked to name the most significant risks they associate with new tariffs (more than one answer accepted) [READ MORE: Consumer sentiment continues to fall amid elevated inflation, tariff concerns] "Supply chain leaders have many potential levers to pull from in mitigating new costs related to tariffs," said Vicky Forman "While supply chain leaders have multiple initiatives underway to potentially lessen the impacts many of these actions have yet to be completed." On Feb. 13, 2025, President Trump announced a plan to apply reciprocal tariffs on imports that equal any tariffs or other levies put on those products from the U.S placed a baseline 10% tariff on all goods being imported to the U.S as well as 25% tariff on all imported automobiles.   The 10% baseline did not apply to Canada and Mexico, which are already paying a 25% levy on products they import to the U.S. On Wednesday, April 9, Trump paused the reciprocal tariffs he placed on imports from most countries for 90 days which have tariffs as high as 145% with exceptions for some specific products Gartner surveyed 126 supply chain leaders from March 17 on their planned responses to new tariff policies and specific mitigation actions Qualifying organizations reported enterprise-wide annual revenue of at least $50 million with 83% of respondents coming from organizations with $1 billion or more in revenue.  Freddie Freeman has been a mainstay for the Los Angeles Dodgers since they signed him prior to the 2022 season but recently he has been forced to play through injury The 35-year-old first injured his ankle at the end of the 2024 season and after playing through pain in the postseason Freeman then missed the Tokyo Series to start 2025 but returned to the Dodgers lineup for the home opener on March 28 he slipped in his shower in early April and ended up on the 10-day injured list Freeman knew he would have to continue to manage his ankle Although he’s someone who never wants to sit out a game Freeman acknowledged he may need more rest days throughout the year With the Dodgers now on a 10-game roadtrip Freeman may have to take a game or two off to get some rest for his ankle “We’ll see,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said and then I do expect him to play four in Arizona “We’ll figure out those middle games.” Freeman was in the lineup for both games against the Atlanta Braves thus far and he’s expected to start in the series finale on Sunday as well the Dodgers travel to face the Miami Marlins for three games from May 5-7 It makes sense for the Dodgers to rest Freeman before they begin a four-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks Freeman isn’t known for his speed, but he is a smart baserunner and has been able to swipe a base here and there. Despite that, Roberts does not want to see Freeman attempting to steal any bases until his ankle is fully recovered Freeman believes he’s able to run the bases without any hesitation or concern but manage the impact.” The company has said previously that it may shift aluminum suppliers or rely more heavily on plastic or glass bottles Coke’s unit case volumes grew 2% in the first quarter partly population increase in Florida in the last five years more and more Florida beach towns are being forced to consider what their options are as far as parking for their “destination” locations specifically beaches and the more tourist-driven areas It’s difficult to compare the situation in Boca Grande – a tiny village on a tiny island – to many places in the state in comparison to some of the beachfront towns and barrier islands of the same size Gasparilla Island has very few shops and restaurants Boca Grande treasures the ones it does have leave the island’s financial ecosystem very vulnerable to changes Other communities around Florida have had a similar situation There are approximately 20 coastal towns and cities of a somewhat comparable size to ours (4,000 to 7,000 people and many of them still have free beach and downtown parking and there are a few that have paid parking for their beaches and other tourist spots Santa Rosa Beach still has free beach parking and is quite similar to Gasparilla Island in that it has 25,000 acres of protected habitat art galleries and exclusive beachfront “private” communities Anna Maria Island is going through potential paid beach parking pains as well they have enough beach access points so there will still be a large amount of free parking Longboat Key has free parking for public beaches but requires permits in certain neighborhoods Gasparilla Island has some of the most beautiful beaches in Southwest Florida but nowhere near as many beach access points as other towns There are few-if-any public facilities at most of them very little expansion room to work with and only a scarce few months out of the year to keep businesses financially stable Top that off with plans from Lee County that include potentially decreasing parking spots Possibly the best example is right up the road in the heart of Sarasota – St It has made a relatively recent transition to paid parking within its shopping district which is one of the most popular and exclusive destinations of its kind Rachel Burns is the executive director of the St and she has watched the awkward transition that has taken place there from free to paid parking with the amount of tourism they experience and more than 100 businesses with over 1,000 employees “We tried for a long time to get a parking garage and what the city of Sarasota ended up doing is putting up a parking bond which the merchants pay through their leases and the city pays the other half through paid parking,” Burns explained In combination with an existing parking lot and street parking they have expanded to now have approximately 1,600 parking spaces There are a limited number of employee parking stickers available That means that some shop employees must pay the daily parking rates or use the few available free spaces that can be accessed by those who get to work early Parking in the garage is free for the first two hours Street parking is $1.50 an hour and the parking lot charge is $1 an hour Burns said many people are upset about the change to paid parking We want people to come here for several hours There was a definite effect that paid parking had on our business owners When visitors would come and find they had to pay for parking Outside of the confines of the parking garage there is a Sarasota County parking patrol to monitor the parking situation they put their license plate number in the meter as well as how long they anticipate being there you don’t have to go back to your car to redo the meter,” Burns said if your parking expires five minutes before you get to your car While that might be a good idea in a bigger city in a small-town atmosphere there is no reason to do so “We were able to get that stopped because we don’t want people to leave; we want them to stay and enjoy it here,” she said “We want to bring people here and give them a reason to want to stay.” Another issue is that many people who come to enjoy the unique shops and restaurants are of a generation that isn’t as computer-savvy as others Some patrons have issues learning how to input their license plate information into the meters and others have problems figuring out the parking app It’s not something that the shop owners on St but inevitably the customers point the finger of blame at them when they get a ticket or can’t figure out how to use the meters properly There is a mix of angled and parallel parking at St the city removed an entire section of angled parking then eventually turned it into parallel parking “They did make the road wider in that spot but we lost important parking spaces right in front of merchants,” she said “and a lot of people struggle with parallel parking You will notice that the angled parking is always full first and in many of the parallel parking spots you will see vehicles sticking out into traffic There are also a lot of people who try to park in a parallel spot and just give up while others just drive right by without even trying And there are definitely more accidents where parking is parallel.” With a five-to-seven-minute drive to downtown Sarasota as well as a mall and several other large shopping plazas where parking is free nearby it’s easy to see that a lot of business in St Armands Circle can be lost over something as simple as a parallel parking spot it is common for beachgoers to use parking spots on The Circle but it provides nowhere near the space needed for such a beautiful beach The sheriff’s office will post on social media when the lot is full and Burns said she frequently sees those posts as early as 11 a.m While it can be difficult even with paid parking to find a good While you’re driving here you look out at the water our shops are special: These are small-business owners The following are more examples of small beach towns and how they handle their parking problems: While Sanibel Island is considerably more congested than Gasparilla Island on a normal day there are aspects of the two places that are similar beach parking on Sanibel Island used to cost $5 a day but you had to be careful and make sure you read the fine print while visiting there Parking at one place could be quite different than at another and parking passes didn’t work across the board You would get a $100 fine if you were illegally parked which increased to $150 after 14 days of nonpayment pay stations were removed and most beaches were closed the president and CEO of Sanibel & Captiva Chamber of Commerce there are going to be about 800 dedicated parking spaces between the Sanibel Causeway All of them will open as free parking for a time Bathrooms and other facilities at these beaches are scheduled to open later in the year Ponce Inlet is a small town south of Daytona Beach in Volusia County It’s one of those places in Florida where you can still drive on the beach in many places throughout the county Countywide paid beach parking began on Jan 1 of this year – residents can apply for beach driving and off-beach parking for free Visitors pay a $30 daily fee to drive on the beach Off-beach parking for visitors is $20 a day or $100 a year with the purchase of an annual pass Daily passes for visitors to drive on the beach are $30 Volusia County uses license plate readers for their parking program and everything is virtual If you buy a new car or even have a rental car you can update the license plate on the app and still be good to go and that cost increases to $100 if it isn’t paid within 14 days Canaveral National Seashore is a barrier island in Volusia County with the longest stretch of undeveloped land on the Atlantic Ocean in Florida which ranges from $15 to $25 for a day pass and $45 for an annual pass If you have an “America the Beautiful” pass for national parks which is in Pinellas County and is considered to be part of the greater Tampa–St is also a smaller enclave where fewer tourists head Parking fees for the paid spots at the 18 beach accesses run an average of $2.50 an hour As of the 2025 official census they have 1,259 residents It is in the relative vicinity of Apalachicola and Panama City which is to say that there is nothing else around it They were hit hard by Hurricane Michael in 2018 but are coming back strong and their beaches are open and ready for the few tourists who love the beach It has no traffic lights or chain restaurants boating and going to the beach are the entertainment you will find there Mexico Beach is incredibly similar to Gasparilla Island in size and in the fact that they have several beach walkovers and parks they have public restrooms at almost every park While they had at one time flirted with the idea of adding paid parking to a few of their beach locations the This is in coordination with the passage of HB309 especially in areas that attract more than just hunters and anglers The new law addressed several wildlife-related items including a few related to wildlife management areas it redefined wildlife management areas as properties that "protect conserve and perpetuate wildlife resources" rather than just a piece of land owned by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources it also added a new requirement that anyone 18 or older must have a valid hunting or combination license to access a management area in a county of the "first or second class," which currently applies only to 30 properties along the Wasatch Front Hunting and fishing are considered the "primary recreational activities" at wildlife management areas but many have brought in people for other recreation Some of these areas then experienced an uptick in usage in recent years which led to more considerable challenges in managing the spaces they were loved to death," she told KSL.com we saw some littering (and) things like that in some of these wildlife areas." wildlife management areas are only acquired and maintained through hunting and fishing license fees and a tax tied to purchasing hunting or fishing equipment along with many other new laws passed this year the rule the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is proposing aims to clarify the new law so it's easier for everyone to understand and follow Since educational programs and education/visitor centers were among the exemptions the new rule wouldn't apply to the Eccles Wildlife Education Center or Hasenyager Reserve at Farmington Bay Wildlife Management Area in Davis County which also serves as a popular location for birdwatching "This area is closed to hunting and provides educational opportunities for the public; For example, if you’re working with a cloud service provider, this might include ensuring that multi-factor authentication (MFA) is enabled for all accounts or that data encryption is properly configured for both data at rest and in transit for vendors handling sensitive customer information you might need to verify that access controls are in place to restrict access to authorized personnel only and that audit logs are enabled to track all activity This includes maintaining visibility into required security configurations and verifying these controls are properly implemented in your environment Having automated checks to confirm these settings remain in place is essential The ideal solution to third-party risk management is implementing a centralized Third-Party Risk Management (TPRM) platform that can unite all critical functions under one roof Such platforms provide real-time visibility into your vendor ecosystem evaluating vendor security postures against predefined criteria Collaborative workflows enable teams to work directly with vendors through shared dashboards and communication tools while automated reporting provides clear insights into vendor compliance and performance metrics Organizations that adopt these comprehensive monitoring solutions will be better positioned to navigate the complexities of vendor risk The future of strong vendor risk management is about building collaborative and transparent relationships with vendors to help identify and mitigate the most important risks for your organization jadee-hanson has 7 posts and counting.See all posts by jadee-hanson Procurement has long sought a strategic seat at the table. Today, it has earned it — but at a cost. As the bi-annual Deloitte CPO Survey makes clear The modern procurement leader must manage risk deliver cost savings and enable innovation — often without additional headcount or budget a new model is emerging: procurement as Orchestrator of Value regulatory pressure and digital transformation It represents a capability shift that empowers procurement to coordinate across people platforms and partners to deliver enterprise value at scale Organizations today face pressure from two sides: internal complexity and external volatility siloed processes and disconnected stakeholder experiences erode procurement’s ability to deliver value supply chains are stretched and stakeholder expectations broaden This fragmentation is not just operational; it is strategic. Procurement teams are spread thin and have to manage everything from basic sourcing to board-level ESG compliance. Yet, according to Deloitte top-performing organizations (‘Orchestrators of Value’) are thriving despite this Because they are embracing orchestration capabilities to coordinate supplier facing processes across business units and functions and adding value within those orchestrated workflows platforms and ecosystems — building intuitive processes and unified supplier experiences that reduce friction and increase transparency Orchestration turns procurement into an agile partner As Bertrand Maltaverne noted during the webinar “Procurement has a peculiar and special spot in companies It’s between the inside and the outside It’s uniquely positioned to connect internal functions with the external ecosystem Orchestration is not just about processes and systems — it’s about helping procurement become the interface between internal stakeholders and a dynamic That’s how value gets delivered consistently.” As Pierre Mitchell of Spend Matters emphasized during the webinar orchestration is not a technology stack — it is a mindset The best procurement organizations think like conductors (the CPO is the ‘Chief Externalization Officer’) and shape demand early engage stakeholders proactively and dynamically adjust workflows based on context and risk Deloitte’s study reinforces this (Figure 1) Procurement must evolve into an Orchestrator of Value by building capabilities that support cross-functional collaboration stakeholder engagement and integrated value delivery.  Top-performing procurement teams are increasingly working with business unit leaders functional partners and suppliers to empower their teams to become Orchestrators of Value and have everyone play the same ‘score.’ This orchestration is built upon numerous capabilities that help drive improved performance and value ranging from operating model reconfiguration increased leveraging of hybrid delivery models to far higher rates of digital enablement and more advanced and sophisticated talent development strategies Several key imperatives drive this evolution: orchestration is how top CPOs elevate performance the moment a stakeholder initiates a request Smart intake routes work based on business intent It blends internal and external data to create context-aware decisions It also delivers a guided user experience that feels more like a platform than a process Suppliers are engaged automatically through intuitive Procurement becomes invisible to the user — but indispensable to the enterprise Deloitte’s survey found that Orchestrators of Value apply flexible automation twice as often as peers and they centralize policies while allowing decentralized execution enabling both control and agility (Figure 2) Source: Deloitte and Spend Matters, Chief Procurement Officer Study Nowhere is orchestration more visible than in supplier management Onboarding is more than a checklist; it is the first handshake between a company and its supply base it enables collaboration and compliance from day one supplier onboarding prompted transformation What began as a tactical fix for risk screening evolved into an enterprise-wide orchestration layer now handling over 90,000 requests per year “Our supplier onboarding process used to be fragmented and confusing,” said Piotr Pierzak Director of Strategy and Digital Procurement at Novartis we provide a unified experience across 30,000 users.” Novartis launched its “Supplier 360” initiative using ORO Labs’ no-code orchestration platform This replaced legacy SIM tools with an experience-driven solution designed to streamline onboarding and maintenance while reducing risk and operational burden business users submitted tens of thousands of supplier-related tickets handled manually by risk and vendor teams Supplier onboarding cycle times often exceeded 20 days and data stewards spent weeks on research per request the onboarding cycle takes less than five days Risk-related callbacks have dropped from 100% of updates to just 1%–2% User experience scores are now consistently above 4 out of 5 He emphasized that orchestration is not about layering new tools on top of legacy systems but designing workflows around real user needs “We stopped thinking in terms of systems and started thinking in terms of people and their journeys,” he noted Supplier onboarding is a foundational process encompassing supplier certification It often determines whether procurement gains credibility with internal stakeholders and whether suppliers experience the organization as a modern organizations can quickly demonstrate tangible transformation outcomes — such as faster onboarding cycles improved compliance and greater transparency — before expanding orchestration to other processes Orchestrated onboarding means suppliers can self-serve buyers get real-time status updates and governance is maintained globally Traditional procurement treated risk and ESG as separate tracks Orchestration weaves them into the workflow regulatory change or sustainability targets orchestrated systems flag risk in real time and adapt accordingly A significant megatrend is shaping the evolution of supplier onboarding: the need to qualify suppliers for risk and compliance reasons even before any sourcing process begins Supplier onboarding today is often driven by regulatory so it is a critical orchestration use case Although some consider ‘orchestration’ jargon or a buzzword it essentially manages and governs ‘on steroids.’ In this context ‘supplier orchestration’ becomes a necessary foundation not just for supplier relationship management (SRM) but for broader third-party risk management (TPRM) and supply is what [value] you get — so spend orchestration cannot succeed without supplier orchestration This supplier orchestration layer enables cross-functional integration of GRC supplier performance and contract compliance systems For large enterprises with fragmented tools TPRM represents a strategic orchestration opportunity which is why it was highlighted so prominently in the webinar Deloitte found that 83% of Orchestrators make risk core to sourcing — compared to just 30% of ‘Followers’ (its term for non-leading organizations) ESG has surged to a top enterprise priority with procurement playing a pivotal role in tracking emissions enforcing supplier criteria and supporting regulatory compliance It is embedded in how suppliers are selected contracts are awarded and performance is measured ORO Labs was created in response to an important realization Most of the most significant challenges experienced in procurement today long cycle times and low adoption rates by business users are symptoms of a single root cause: poor user adoption due to poor user experience and high-friction across business systems it was to solve what we saw as the root cause of friction in enterprise procurement: bad user experience,” said Sudhir Bhojwani ORO Labs does not replace existing systems It serves as the connective tissue between them Its orchestration layer uses intelligently configured UX dynamic workflows and integration-ready architecture to adapt to business needs systems and processes so employees get exactly what they need without frustration.  This is not about digitizing forms but about abstracting complexity API-driven validations and user-first design to drive adoption It is designed to enable procurement act with agility while maintaining control It also helps free procurement professionals from manually coordinating tasks and delivers visibility so everyone knows how long a process will take and the current status of a particular request This visibility helps identify and address bottlenecks on a no-code platform built for procurement Using our SolutionMap methodology, we have evaluated ORO Labs thoroughly Our criteria include core intake and orchestration concepts such as workflow configurability and integration support such as supplier onboarding that are usually supported by an orchestration solution (whether internally or via integration) Our analysis reveals that ORO Labs is a high-performing provider in the intake and orchestration market and it received top analyst scores among competitors in several of the areas relevant to the Novartis story including in supplier qualification (and onboarding) and supplier risk monitoring (Figure 3).  The Novartis transformation cited earlier also illustrates the transformative impact of having the right technology paired with the right implementation approach ORO Labs enabled Novartis to reframe how procurement is perceived across the enterprise — from a compliance checkpoint to an enabler of business outcomes The solution flipped the traditional paradigm: Supplier management is now initiated by the business user or relationship owner smart data triggers alert the right teams (from procurement and vendor management to risk and finance) to step in at critical steps heterogeneous data from multiple ERPs and systems while shielding end-users from that complexity This reduces friction for business users and eases the burden on data stewards and compliance owners who no longer need to navigate highly country-specific playbooks and Deloitte’s data paints a clear picture: As procurement leaders face mounting complexity and shrinking resources orchestration offers a path forward to efficiency and enterprise impact The top-performing CPOs are not doing more with less; they are doing better with what they have platforms and data to deliver value that transcends cost savings resilient and user-centric procurement operation by starting small solving real pain and expanding through modular orchestration “We didn’t start with a grand transformation plan,” Pierzak explained “We started by solving a real compliance need with sensitive payment validation and expanded from there.” And the gap between those who embrace it and those who do not will only widen The next era of procurement leadership will be defined not by tools but by the ability to orchestrate value at scale You can watch a recording of the webinar by following this
