Today Bois du Cazier has been restored for future memory and
the spaces of the old structure have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
66 years have passed since the tragedy in the Belgian coal mine of Bois du Cazier
It was 8.10 am on 8 August 1956 when a fire broke out in the mine which cost the lives of 262 miners
the Italians who emigrated to Belgium to work in the mines following the agreement signed between the two countries
in exchange for which our country would have received 200 kilograms of coal per day for each miner from Belgium
at the origin of the fire there was a misunderstanding about the start-up times of the elevators among the workers in the subsoil
who placed the wagons with coal on the hoists
and thus causing an explosion and then a fire that quickly spread to the whole mine
For almost all of the people working in the depths of the mine there was no escape
The mine had no fire exits and the rescue car was slow to activate
so the miners were trapped in the flames and suffocated by carbon monoxide
a team managed to enter the site of the tragedy
announcing that they had found only lifeless bodies and thus putting an end to all hope
In 1959 the trial on the catastrophe opened
it was an "involuntary error" and the first instance sentence thus saw everyone acquitted
who was sentenced to six months on probation
the old structure of the Bois du Cazier mine has been restored for future memory and
the spaces of the mine have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The site hosts the memorial ceremony for the 262 missing persons every year
As also recalled by the President of the Republic
in his message on the occasion of the anniversary
since 2001 the anniversary has been proclaimed "National day of the sacrifice of Italian labor in the world" so that
"in memory of what happened at the Bois du Cazier
may the memory of all Italians who have fallen on the job abroad be honored "
The Belgian accident is in fact the third most serious in terms of number of victims among Italian immigrants abroad after the disasters of Monongah and Dawson
which occurred respectively in 1907 and 1913
the Republic pays tribute to those sons of Italy
as it marks the National Day of Italian Labour Sacrifices in the World
This official day of commemoration was established in 2001 by the unforgettable Minister Tremaglia (with whom I had the honour of visiting Marcinelle) to remember and honour Italian workers who lost their lives in all corners of the world and the economic
social and cultural contribution their work made to the progress of the nations that welcomed them
a piece in the great mosaic that is the history of Italian emigration - a succession of enormous sacrifices but also of extraordinary successes and achievements
rediscovering the bond that links us to Italians abroad
who are ambassadors for Italy around the world and carry the Tricolour in their hearts”
