St RombaldoThe ideal starting point of the tour is St on which you can climb (a whopping 538 steps!) to enjoy a panorama that encompasses the entire city and its surroundings But it is inside the Cathedral that the real treasure is to be found: the Christ on the Cross by Antoon van Dyck and an incredible collection of Flemish sacred art with works by Michel Coxcie as well as Gaspard de Crayer and Abraham Janssens But above all is the 1665 high altar by Lucas Faydherbe a pupil of Rubens and a central figure in Flemish Baroque sculpture and architecture The tour then leads to the discovery of other extraordinary churches The Church of Our Lady beyond the Dijle holds a monumental triptych by Peter Paul Rubens The Miraculous Peach: the masterpiece was commissioned from him by the fishermen’s guild and survived destruction by an American bomb in World War II features the aforementioned Lucas Faydherbe: in addition to designing the church the artist created two stucco reliefs depicting theAdoration of the Shepherds and the Ascent to Calvary considered two true masterpieces of Baroque sculpture in the southern Netherlands Religious furnishings and textiles can also be seen in the church Then there is the polychrome statue of Our Lady of Mercy of Our Lady of Hanswyk to which an ancient legend is linked: it seems that the statue freed a fully laden ship that had run aground along the shore of the Dyle in the 10th century is one of the finest examples of Flemish Baroque absolutely a must-see is the carved pulpit by sculptor Hendrik Frans Verbruggen an artist who specialized in Baroque church furnishings the pulpit was conceived as one large sculptural work and was meant to convey to believers the faith that the Jesuits were spreading throughout the world But it does not end there: there are also the Church of St custodian of another masterpiece by Peter Paul Rubens and well-preserved frescoes from the 14th century; the Gothic-style Church of St which houses Pieter Valckx’s splendid carved pulpit inside; and the Church of the Beghinaggio which combines Italian influence with typical local architecture and houses a rich collection of paintings inside including theAdoration of the Magi by Theodoor van Loon theAssumption of Mary by Lucas II Franchoys and The Mystic Wedding of Catherine of Alexandria by Theodor Boeyermans a Burgundian-style palace now converted into a museum Here one breathes the intellectual climate of the Flanders Renaissance: indeed consider that its corridors were traversed by thinkers such as Thomas More and Erasmus of Rotterdam You can also admire well-preserved frescoes in typical Flemish Renaissance style probably done by Jan van Roome around 1508 There is one sound that accompanies this trip Mechelen is the world capital of bell music is the more than 100-year-old Royal School “Jef Denyn,” founded in 1922 by Jef Denyn himself The sound of bells accompanies city life every day Also not to be missed is the mobile specimen in the Sinte Mette garden And when it’s time to delight the palate we turn to the “Mond vol Mechelen”culinary itinerary inspired by the flavors of the 16th century Here the creativity of twelve local gastronomes reinterprets ancient recipes with a contemporary twist The vegan Renaissance burger at Funky Jungle restaurant or the spicy cream cheese with coriander seeds and figs served at Schockaert Or the shiny beetle-shaped praline created by maître chocolatier Pieter Vaes as a tribute to Margaret of Austria’s exotic cabinet of curiosities while at Broodbroeders you can enjoy Renaissance-style gingerbread apple and pear syrup and a secret 16th-century spice blend This is a perfect way to end the day with authentic flavors linked to the Flemish Renaissance tradition one of the most striking places in Mechelen for its typical Flemish architecture and buildings (it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site) where the famous Gouden Carolus is brewed: founded in 1471 it is one of the oldest breweries in Belgium and visiting it is an experience “The Masters of Mechelen and Beyond” is a trip to a city that has made art its renaissance where you can admire pictorial and sculptural masterpieces and visit spectacular Baroque churches The tout is part of the larger project “Flemish Masters in Their Own Land,” to show how many Flemish cities are still at the center of a dialogue with the Masters of the past in the very places where they lived and created masterpieces De Lijn will start emission-free public transport in the Belgian city of Mechelen in Plus proved to be no fluke as they claimed highest honour in the Grand Prix at the World Cup qualifier in Mechelen (BEL) on Saturday 28 December 2024 Verboomen and his 8-year old Portuguese bred Hanoverian Zonik Plus (by Zonik x Hohenstein) rode their second international at big tour level this month and were the ones to watch in Mechelen At the start of December they arrived in Kronenberg as totally unknown pair which resulted in the judges being conservative with their Grand Prix score (71.739%) They corrected it to what they truly saw in the Special This score was only a fraction less than the Belgian GPS record score of 74.149% ridding in the summer by Flore De Winne at the 2024 Olympics Verboomen and Zonik PlusVerboomen's excellent results at the CDI Kronenberg Indoor prompted Belgian selectors to invite him to the Christmas show in Mechelen  The draw for the Grand Prix for World Cup qualifiers is unfortunately based on an unfair reverse order of the FEI World Ranking (scientifically proven to create an unlevel field of play as scores go up towards the end of the class) This meant that for a second time in a row They produced a very convincing round and showed the world they are no flash in the pan The indoor arena in the Nekkerhallen exhibition center in Mechelen is a real challenge for some horses The electric atmosphere proved to be a hurdle for several horses in the class of 15 and tongue issues arose with several top combinations which pushed their score down a bit and opened the door for the Belgian duo to win on home turf Second international win for JustinAs first to go Justin Verboomen also had a slightly more tense horse in his hands passages to be a true natural collected trot and there was a lack of bending in the corners good extensions and the passage has much airtime and the transitions in and out of the piaffe are effortless In the extended walk there were two hooves overtrack but the horse needed to relax a bit more The second piaffe-passage showed great activity and willingness but in piaffe the hocks were a bit up instead of under In the ones the horse needs to stay a bit straighter in the body The pirouettes were small with the left one being the better one The final centreline was featherlight and fluent The horse tends to halt with the hindlegs a bit out and the final halt was not truly immobile All small details that can be worked on and if they improve the 75% marker will be cracked easily and Jacques van Daele rewarded the pair with 74.348% a high score at the start of the class which was not beaten by the other 14 combinations Verboomen trains with Belgian based German Claudia Kircheiss Zonik Plus at the World Cup in MechelenZonik Plus is only 8 years old In the sport right now many like to see the age ride a full Grand Prix test as soon as February when their horse is literally still 7 (turning 8 in the spring) Examples of early Grand Prix starters are Jovian They were all competing at GP level at the start of the year before they turned 8 Denmark recently lifted the age limit to 9 and is giving a clear sign to the FEI that this might be the future of the sport This age rule is meant to temper the impatience of horse trainers riders and dealers to quickly produce young horses to Grand Prix level at the cost of the horse's growth and health Justin's 74.348% Grand Prix result in Mechelen turned out to be a new Belgian record Grand Prix score Larissa Pauluis and FlambeauTo this date and to our information, the previous record was 74.100% achieved by Fanny Verliefden on Annarico almost ten years ago Unfortunately Den Bosch proved to be the mare's last as she injured herself and disappeared from the show scene Larissa Pauluis and Flambeau's highest Grand Prix score is 73.913 he finished second in the Mechelen Grand Prix with 73.783% Olympian Larissa Pauluis and the Lepage family's 14-year old KWPN gelding (by Ampere x Zeoliet) really seem to have found their stride and confidence in each other's abilities The pair is now fully coached by Eddy Swennen before they also got training from Norbert van Laak The pair rode very good trot extensions with plenty of elasticity although in the second one the horse was slightly on three tracks (hind to the right) The first passage needed the hindlegs come under the body a bit more but in piaffe Flambeau can really sit from behind If only the rhythm gets a bit more consolidated than the scores will soar there was a small hesitation in the second piaffe The two tempi changes were a highlight as well as the powerful the ones were big although he swung to the right and the pirouettes were well executed Dorothee Schneider and DaymanSince the retirement of her top horse Showtime as well as Faustus German Olympian Dorothee Schneider has no longer been a frequent face on the scene Her rising Grand Prix star First Romance needed a long break due to injury a Chinese owner 12-year old Westfalian by Daily Deal x Flovino which took her back across borders this year In Mechelen the bay stallion struggled with contact issues and had the tongue out in several movements on the left side despite Schneider's soft and consistent contact The bay was rather stiff in the half passes The highlight was probably the very engaged and properly collected passage Also in piaffe the horse has the correct sit although he crept a bit forward  The extended walk was a highlight with a very clear V-moment in the rhythm The rider had to give visible aids in the two tempi's that were not so straight Overall the test was soft footed and carefully ridden but Dayman was fidgety in the mouth throughout A week after competing Hartsuijker in London Dutch number one Dinja van Liere took her top horse Hermes to Mechelen Dinja van Liere and HermesTwo years ago the pair competed in Mechelen for the first time and the now 12-year old stallion (by Easy Game x Flemmingh) did not like the arena nor the decorations and gave her a very difficult ride He already refused and spun round while travelling the arena and even during the test there were heaps of tension especially flopping out on the final centreline Howeverever it must be said that Van Liere did a tremendous job piloting this stallion who gave her a difficult time Throughout the test she gave him the rein to let him stretch the neck and to make him feel comfortable In the trot half passes to the left he gaped but covered much ground truly collected and the piaffes were very smooth but one noticed they were executed in tension The horse kept looking in the extended walk but still achieved good overtrack The two's were tense but no mistakes were made even though he gets croup high particularly in the changes to the right There was a big mistake in the zig zag in which he tilted and changed early On the final centreline there was a very good rhythm World Cup ribbonToday the pair scored still a 72.348% for fourth place the high score was still miraculously 74.130% and one other judge even saw 73.587% in that tense test In 2022 Dinja fully recovered in the freestyle to win the 2022 World Cup qualifier and it will be interesting to see if she can repeat that feat in Mechelen again and settle the horse in that atmosphere A total of ten combinations qualified for the jump-off, five of them under the Belgian flag. This gave the home crowd a 50% chance of seeing a winner from their own country. However, Hans-Dieter Dreher and Vestmalle des Cotis (Balou du Rouet) flipped the odds and secured a German victory. Gilles Thomas had to settle for silver aboard his Olympic mount, Ermitage Kalone (Catoki), while Pieter Devos took bronze with his own bred Casual DV (Cornet Obolensky). "My horse jumped amazing and I could trust him 100%," Dreher said after winning the World Cup.  "Vestmalle is normally a very sensative horse. Today he was a bit nervous but we could handle it. To be honest, the course builder did a really good job and it was a very fair course to ride." "My main goal is now to go focus on Basel. Thanks to this win I'm qualified and will start my preparations for it," the German rider concludes. Pieter Devos (BEL) was close again. Last year he finished fourth. "I will have to come back competing in Mechelen until I win this World Cup," he smiled afterwards. Two riders remained. Before Pieter Devos could take the spotlight, Hans-Dieter Dreher entered the arena with Vestmalle des Cotis (Baloubet du Rouet). Having come close to victory in both 2022 and 2023, could he finally claim the win this time? With just eight-hundredths of a second, the German dethroned Gilles Thomas, securing at least a podium finish. Only Pieter Devos remained with a chance to bring the victory home. Riding the 9-year-old Casual DV Z (Cornet Obolensky), a horse of his own breeding, Devos delivered a spectacular performance. The top three finished incredibly close, but with a time of 36.26 seconds, Devos claimed the bronze medal. CategoriesCategoriesEnglishCULTURE, SOCIETYPainting by Jordaens stolen by Nazis returned to rightful owners in Mechelen5 February 2025 In 2022, the painting resurfaced in the cellar of a Dutch man who had relocated to the Ardèche before his death. He had long suspected it was stolen and confided in his nephew about it years earlier. His sister later inherited his estate, including the painting, and her son took steps to return it. "My uncle had told me years earlier that he had a painting in his possession that had probably been stolen, so after his death, we actively started looking for it," said Bart van Nieuwland. "We found the work hidden in a false ceiling of the cellar. I had no idea of its value, so I took it to the Dutch art dealer Art Dumay. Together, we discovered it was a genuine Jordaens and that it was listed among stolen artworks."  © BELGA PHOTO KATLEEN VASTIAUAfter contacting the rightful heirs the painting was carefully restored and returned nearly 80 years to the day after its theft FPS Economy officials detailed the process of tracing the descendants While the barracks are not directly linked to this case as Scheppers de Bergstein was a resistance fighter rather than a Jewish deportee his fate mirrored that of many who suffered under Nazi persecution The Scheppers de Bergstein family has a long history in the Mechelen region Joseph’s father served as mayor of Heindonk (now part of Willebroek) for 25 years and several family members were aldermen in Mechelen Monsignor Viktor Scheppers founded the renowned Scheppers Institute in the city #FlandersNewsService |Michel Scheppers de Bergstein Elisabeth van Nieuwland and Bart van Nieuwland pictured with Return of the Holy Family from the Flight into Egypt painting by Jacob Jordaens during a ceremony on Wednesday 05 February 2025 Copy linkGet updates in your mailboxYour email addressSubscribeBy clicking "Subscribe" I confirm I have read and agree to the Privacy Policy rapid and high-quality information 24 hours a day from Belgium and abroad to all Belgian media not to mention entertainment and lifestyle our journalists and press photographers produce hundreds of photos and news stories Since the end of March 2022 English has been added as a language businesses and various organisations that need reliable information Belga News Agency also offers a comprehensive range of corporate services to meet all their communication needs www.belganewsagency.eu Official Celtic FC Website Enter now for your chance to be a winner Our exclusive 'SIGN FOR CELTIC' competitions with the chance to win some fantastic prizes Sign InJoinThree main candidates on the list at KV Mechelen to replace Besnik Hasi | OneFootballGet Belgian & Dutch Football News Het Nieuwsblad are reporting that KV Mechelen have a three man shortlist as they look for a replacement for Besnik Hasi Former head coach Wouter Vrancken is on the list while former Antwerp and Westerlo head coach Jonas De Roeck is also there Another name on the list is current Charleroi head coach Rik De Mil In the past decade or so the sides best moments came during Vrancken’s tenure at the club He was sacked a few weeks ago despite securing a top six finish De Mil is the least likely of the three options being under contract with his current side Charleroi until 2026 He is only willing to leave if the project on offer is enticing which at the moment would rule Mechelen out Mechelen are likely going to have to wait until the summer Standard Liège v Charleroi preview: Charleroi look to compound further misery on Standard Liège in the Walloon Derby.
