Alvarado eeked out a small gap after making her way to the front of the five-rider lead group before a technical section on the penultimate lap
The former world champion kept up the pressure
building a five-second lead over Brand and Marie Schreiber (SD Worx-Protime) as the bell rang for the final lap
A bobble before the sand pit forced Alvarado to dismount and run while behind
narrowing the gap down to just two seconds
claiming her third consecutive win at the Aardbeiencross
Schreiber took third on a fast and windy course where group racing played a significant role throughout the race
using her road skills to get a small gap after the first lap as a chase group formed behind her
The Luxembourg champion was joined mid-race by Brand
Inge Inge van der Heijden (Fenix-Deceuninck)
and Annemarie Worst (Fenix-Deceuninck) midway through the six-lap race
Brand capitalised on a mistake by van der Heijen on a technical section to briefly break away
managed to close the gap to the Dutch champion and reclaimed control
Alvarado takes over the Superprestige leaderboard with 57 points

Toon Aerts second and Lars van der Haar third at Aardbeiencross
Laurens Sweeck (Crelan-Corendon) waited until the final lap to put in a big attack to claim his third win of the 2024-25 cyclocross season at the fourth round of the Superprestige in Merksplas
Sweeck overtook Toon Aerts (Deschacht-Hens-FSP) at the front of a 10-rider group to take the lead into the sand pit
building a two-second gap on his way to victory
Aerts held on for second place while Lars van der Haar edged out his Baloise Trek Lions teammate Thibau Nys for third.
Vanthourenhout came around Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin-Deceuninck)
a position he would occupy for most of the nine-lap race
Spanish champion Felipe Orts (Ridley Racing) attacked a few times
but the front group would come back together time and again
as Vanthourenhout’s teammate Eli Iserbyt tried to block a few times to the displeasure of Aerts in the final third of the race
forcing Nys to close the gap as Sweeck started to move up
Vanthourenhout was once again at the front
and Sweeck while Nys and Iserbyt were fighting for position just in front of Van der Haar
The fight for position before the sand and final turns were keys to winning the race with Sweeck bidding his time to finally overtake Vanthourenhout to take the victory
Vanthourenhout finished fourth and Vandeputte was fifth
Van der Haar and Vandeputte are tied atop of the Superprestige standings with 49 points
with a five-point lead on Vanthourenhout.

Joris Nieuwenhuis achieved the biggest win of his career by taking Saturday’s mucky fourth round of the Superprestige series
the “Strawberry cross” in Merksplas
The Baloise Trek Lion was the strongest on a brutal course
but the engrossing part of the race was the podium fight between other three riders
Going into Saturday’s race Eli Iserbyt led the series by 14 points over Laurens Sweeck, having won the first three rounds
seized the hole shot on Lap 1 before Nieuwenhuis took over for good
Iserbyt was in Position 3 in the muddy chaos
Vandeputte and Nieuwenhuis opted out of a bike change
although Nieuwenhuis whipped off his glasses at the pit
Gaps grew between Nieuwenhuis and Vandeputte and Vandeputte and Iserbyt
Spaniard Filipe Orts continued to pressure Iserbyt at the beginning of Lap 2
Nieuwenhuis carried on 10 seconds ahead of Vandeputte
while Iserbyt started to pull away from Orts
Vandeputte kept up his dogged pursuit on Lap 3 of 7
Sweeck was slowly making his way through the field
A mistake on Lap 4 allowed Orts to pass Iserbyt
On Lap 5 Orts started to yank Vandeputte closer
only Nieuwenhuis maintained his gap on the penultimate lap
Iserbyt passed Orts and had designs on Vandeputte’s runner-up position
The podium fight would come down to who would make the fewest mistakes
Iserbyt rounded Vandeputte in the middle of the bell lap and held tough

Brand and Norbert Riberolle complete women's podium
Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin-Deceuninck) fought through the mud and rain to win the Merksplas Superprestige race
extending her run of cyclocross victories to three.
Lucinda Brand (Baloise Trek Lions) challenged Alvarado as she continued her comeback but errors in the rain ultimately cost her precious seconds and she finished 26 seconds behind
Marion Norbert Riberolle (Crelan-Corendon) fought with Annemarie Worst (Cyclocross Reds) to finish third at 52 seconds.
not only due to the weather conditions but also about the race itself with the riders,” Alvarado said post race.
“I can be really happy about this victory because I fought hard for it
with Brand taking an early lead as Alvarado was forced to chase
Alvarado was six seconds down on Brand after lap 1 but she closed the gap as Brand struggled and lost speed on a technical
Alvarado surged past into the lead and opened a 15-second lead
Brand was able to reduce the gap on lap 3 but Alvarado accelerated on the fourth lap and to secure her third consecutive victory.
Norbert Riberolle and Worst fought hard for third
Worst appeared stronger but then Norbert Riberolle made a decisive late attack to take third place

'Pushing the limits would not be a good idea' say Jumbo-Visma
Marianne Vos shot out of the blocks at Saturday's Superprestige cyclocross race in Merksplas
but the world champion soon paid the price.
After slipping back through the field to finish down in 10th place
Vos has now pulled out of the weekend's main appointment
the World Cup event in Overijse on Sunday.
"[She] deduced that pushing the limits tomorrow would not be a good idea," read a statement from the Jumbo-Visma team.
"She will therefore pass up the World Cup race in Overijse."
sprinting from the front row to take pole position into the first corner
she put the hammer down and had soon broken up the field
with Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado the only rider able to stay on terms.
She had to let Alvarado through as she had problems clipping in
and then started to lose some ground in the second half of the circuit
but still crossed the line at the end of the first lap in clear second place
the writing was on the wall and she lost her way on the second lap
From there she ground her way to hang onto a top 10 but was clearly far from her best
I knew the first stretch was difficult and that riding your own lines has its benefits," said Vos
"I was really at my limit when Ceylin took over
Alvarado herself described Vos' scorching opening lap as "a good lead-out"
and it may simply be that she went too hard too early and failed to recover
There were no major incidents or crashes but she looked to be suffering from the second lap.

World champion will race Merksplas Superprestige but full 'cross calendar is still unknown
World cyclocross champion Tom Pidcock is set to make his racing return at the Superprestige round in Merksplas on Saturday
The 23-year-old hasn't raced since taking the points jersey at the abridged Tour of Britain back in early September and hasn't competed in cyclocross since winning the world title in Fayeteville in January
At last week's Tour de France route presentation, the Ineos Grenadiers star said that he hadn't yet decided on his calendar for the 2022-23 'cross season
instead working on getting rid of knee pain that had lingered since last February
Pidcock is set to return to cyclocross racing in just over two weeks' time
The race in Merksplas is the third round of the Superprestige trophy
It's followed the next day by the sixth round of the UCI World Cup in Overijse
and it isn't clear whether he'll defend his world title in Hoogerheide in February
"I haven't got a schedule yet," Pidcock told Cyclingnews last week
but I actually haven't had the conversation yet
My coach has COVID so we didn't have the conversation last week on the training camp."

All five 'cross World Cup events on American's schedule
There’s still red, white, and blue on the KFC Racing kit, but no stars and stripes for 15-time US national cyclo-cross champion Katie Compton (KFC Racing p/b TREK/Knight Composites) when she takes the start line at the elite women’s Superprestige in Merksplas this Sunday
bronze medalist at US nationals in January and fourth at the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in February
will begin her 2020-21 international campaign in Belgium and told Cyclingnews that she plans to race all five World Cup events in the coronavirus-abbreviated season
World Cup competitions were reduced from 14 to five because of the continued coronavirus outbreak
with three of those being held in Belgium: Namur
Compton arrived in Belgium earlier this week and plans to use it as her home base to take part in UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships at the end of January
"Doing the paperwork to get in to Belgium is a lot of work
You’ve got to really want it and also have a need to go there," Compton said
Mainly you need to be able to prove you need to be there to do your job
"Even with the proper paperwork and permission
it’s still a risk we decided to take and will do everything in our control to stay healthy and distance ourselves from people along the way
We don’t want to get other people sick
so we’re going to take all the safety precautions we can
"But it seems that the actual bike racing part has been fairly safe
There haven’t been that many confirmed COVID cases within the bike racing world after the races started up again
It seems like people are being smart and doing the right thing."
The 42-year-old American’s schedule will include four rounds of the Telenet Superprestige series
beginning with Urban Cross in Kortrijk on November 28
then Scheldecross in Antwerpen on December 12
There is no need to travel home for US nationals this year
live racing cancelled this summer and fall in the US for the pros
Compton found a few local cyclo-cross events near her home in Colorado to reintroduce her body and bike to the game-day experience
"I decided to just do some local races and have fun with it
I’ll at least have some racing in my legs
but it’s about the race effort and going hard
and being technically smooth," said Compton
who won four of the four races in Colorado in which she competed in October and early November.
This weekend’s C2 races will be held for elite men and women only
Organisers recently moved the event from Saturday to Sunday and are not permitting spectators
stating on their website: "Stay in your room
enjoy on TV and keep it all healthy." Broadcasts will be made available in Belgium on Telenet Play Sports and Proximus TV
and in the Netherlands on EurosportNL.
I was just really happy to be the first person to break the Dutch run of first through fifth," Compton told Cyclingnews about her performance at the last Worlds.
I got caught behind two crashes at the start
And then I was really happy to bring it back
If Ceylin [who is 22 years old] had raced in her category I would’ve been third
These young riders are getting super fast."
Compton’s set-up for racing continues the same as in past years
with major support from Trek and Knight Composites
and with Champion Systems as a new sponsor for 2020-21
Compton remains cautious about completing a full schedule
"I’m leaning on being a bit more realistic with racing and traveling right now since it is difficult to travel between countries based on current COVID restrictions," she said
you have to be smart enough to stay home and not see anybody."

Former world champion takes back-to-back Superprestige victories in pursuit to regain glory from two years ago
Back in the winner’s circle for a second consecutive Superprestige race this season, Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin-Deceuninck) won Saturday at Merksplas and snatched the overall lead in the series.
This time last year, the 2020 cyclocross world champion missed the start of the Superprestige and World Cup rounds due to health reasons
which her Alpecin team called “bad blood picture”
She was off the bike for an extended time.
The 21-month drought ended November 11 when she won the Superprestige stop in Niel

The back-to-back victories this week were against strong fields

At the next four World Cup races she has finished ninth or better
and earned the silver medal in Namur at the European Championships.
“You don't forget winning the first time
now I'm going through it,” Alvarado told Wielerflits after her win in Niel
But you are very happy when it comes out.”
Rainbow patterns on the seat tube and tyres
'It was maybe not the best race to start with' says World Champion
Tom Pidcock played down expectations ahead of his cyclocross season debut and he was proven accurate
crashing and finishing in seventh place at the Superprestige event in Merksplas on Sunday.
The multi-discipline star was making his first appearance since becoming world champion in the USA back in January
but had warned there might not be any immediate fireworks in the rainbow jersey
Noting that he usually takes a couple of weeks to get up to speed, Pidcock indeed appeared a little rusty on a cold and technical Merksplas course.
"It was beetje moeilijk," Pidcock said in his post-race TV interview
showing off his Flemish language skills in a phrase that means "a bit difficult".
riding much of the race in a stalwart group of contenders
Laurens Sweeck took flight early on and was never seen again
and Lars van der Haar went clear in pursuit
but Pidcock was part of a battle for third place for the first half of the race.
he started to lose ground on the fifth of eight laps
and any hope of a top result disappeared when he slid out on an innocuous-looking section ahead of a staircase.
"It was maybe not the best race to start with," Pidcock said of the technical Merksplas course. "On the corners I was losing so much time
but I was losing time in a lot of places."
calling it "a Laurens Sweeck presentatie" - or exhibition - before declaring himself content with his own showing.
and there were just a few too many mistakes
Pidcock got his cyclocross campaign underway with the rainbow jersey on his shoulders and a custom white and rainbow Pinarello underneath him.
All the public were supporting and that was nice
it was nice to be wearing these colours again after quite a few years
"To win in this jersey would be nice," he added.
He'll have another opportunity at the World Cup in Overijse on Sunday
after which his task is complicated by the return of four-time world champion Mathieu van der Poel next weekend
and three-time world champion Wout van Aert the weekend after that.
Pidcock was also debuting his new special-edition world champion's bike.
Pinarello developed its first performance cyclocross bike
last year ahead of Pidcock's first 'cross campaign with Ineos Grenadiers.
He rode a navy British champion's version last season but he now has a new paintjob to celebrate his status as world champion.
with rainbow flashes on the fork and seat tube
The colours appear in a jagged formation on the fork and at the rear between the stays.
The top tube also features a thin strip of rainbow colour
along with the motto 'play your cards right'
which once again accompanies an image of playing cards within his eye-line.
It appears Pidcock has made no major changes to his set-up
choosing Shimano Dura-Ace groupset and wheels
which are paired with Challenge Grifo tubular tyres that also feature a rainbow pattern on the tan wall.
Tom Pidcock made his 2022/23 cyclocross season debut on a custom Pinarello Crossista F
which commemorates his World Championship victory in January
The multi-discipline maestro finished seventh in the Superprestige Merksplas, his first cyclocross race since taking the world title in Fayetteville
The special edition of Pinarello’s first cyclocross bike is sprayed white with rainbow stripes down the fork and seat tube
Despite the filthy conditions (which were worse the following day at Overijse
The silhouette of Pinarello’s cyclocross frame could pass for the Pinarello Dogma F
Pidcock requested a number of cyclocross-specific features
The kinked top tube is supposed to make the bike easier to shoulder in order to carry it over cyclocross obstacles
The Tour de France stage winner on Alpe d’Huez ran an 11-speed, double-chainring Shimano Dura-Ace R9170 Di2 drivetrain in the weekend’s Belgium double-header
Before joining Team Ineos, who are sponsored by Shimano, Pidcock rode a Specialized S-Works Crux equipped with 1x SRAM Red eTap AXS groupset
but we don’t know the rotor size on the R9120 hydraulic discs
Shimano Dura-Ace C36 carbon tubular wheels were shod with Challenge Grifo 700 x 33mm tubular tyres
The Crossista uses Most Talon’s one-piece bar and stem, while Pidcock chose Shimano XTR pedals
His Fizik Arione 00 saddle looks to be set forward to the limits of the rails. This could be to place Pidcock on top of the front wheel for better control when performing cyclocross skills
Pidcock’s Ineos teammate Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, whose four off-road world titles this year include the inaugural Gravel World Championships
is also racing the Pinarello CX bike in her 2022/23 campaign
