exhibitions and events while also supporting tourism as a seaside resort
The project was designed and implemented by a multidisciplinary Dutch-Belgian collaboration known as the Nautilus Consortium, which consisted of the architectural firms ZJA, OZ and Bureau Bouwtechniek, alongside landscape architecture practice DELVA and several other collaborators
the project team first had to reinforce the existing sea wall and then integrate it into the event venue
they also sought to pedestrianise and expand the public space surrounding the plot near Epernay Square
which was previously interrupted by traffic from adjacent roads
Middelkerke was a fishing village at the centre of Testerep
an island that was home to similar settlements such as Ostend and Westende
these areas were connected to the West Flanders mainland through the construction of dikes and canals at an unconfirmed point in history
the sea wall used to halt the encroachment of the tides had assumed the image of a dull concrete barrier
which limited the available public space along the seashore and appeared disconnected from the rest of West Flanders
As a result, the hospitality design for Silt Middelkerke also had to address the rejuvenation of these site features
coastal protection angle and the programme were specified in the tender request
we decided to merge the public space with the building
The adjacent square was also made to extend over the roof of the event venue
effectively doubling the available public space in this location
This integration of building and public space maximises the project's connection to its surroundings.”
As Ten Wolde explains, “For the geometry of the sea wall, we built upon a study of the Middelkerke promenade, which developed details such as the slope, wave-overflow elements and storm walls. We designed these elements specifically to conform to the unique characteristics of this location and the language of our design
The use of natural lines and curves emphasise the integration between building and landscape and this is where the strength of our design lies.”
enhancing the visual dominance of the entire development along Middelkerke’s coastline
the entrance to the building is recessed beneath the arched profile of the public roofscape
which slopes down on either side with stairs leading to the ground level
an atrium with an oval plan form presents itself
A similarly shaped core at the centre of the foyer grants access to the hotel lounge and breakfast hall on the floor above
followed by five floors devoted exclusively to rooms for guests
to help cut down vehicular traffic near the public spaces above it
Silt Middelkerke is poised to redefine the relationship between the seaside
public space and the surrounding township along this stretch of the West Flanders coastline
Although it was constructed in rapid time over a period of less than two years
the road to arrive at this point was neither simple nor straightforward
“The specific location of the project was a challenge
high water levels had to be considered and the safety of the hinterland had to be guaranteed at all times
construction was not allowed during July and August
which is the tourist season in Middelkerke.”

Text description provided by the architects. Both inspiring and principled, venue building Silt Middelkerke is an asset to the Belgian coast in several respects
With a great love of the sea and the dunes
this new eye-catcher combines coastal reinforcement
The extraordinary design is a creation of architecture bureau ZJA and DELVA landscape architects
in collaboration with OZ and Bureau Bouwtechniek and a wealth of experts who together make up Bouwteam Nautilus
Reinforcement of sea embankment and enhanced public space. The requirements for a new venue building, Silt in Middelkerke, encompassed a wide array of objectives. The design had to accommodate a reinforcement of the sea embankment, a plan to enhance the quality of the public space by removing car traffic and also unify the boulevard and the Epernay square.
© Sebastian van DammeA rejuvenating impulse. The center of Middelkerke needed a rejuvenating impulse to create conditions for living and visiting the coast that met the contemporary requirements and preferences of residents and tourists alike
This called for a new layout of Epernay Square
becoming a car-free zone thanks to the planned underground parking garage
This connects it to the center and allows access by car while still giving most space to pedestrians and cyclists
At least as important as the casino itself was the need for a multipurpose building, that could serve as a social and cultural meeting point for Middelkerke; a new living room for the town, to host conventions, exhibitions and concerts. On top of that, the development of a hotel right on the beach would stimulate tourism.
In collaboration with OZ, DELVA Landscape Architects, and Bureau Bouwtechniek, ZJA produced a design that excels in integrating the casino, the hotel, and the multipurpose hall into the characteristic West Flemish dune landscape. This had disappeared behind the dead straight sea embankment and the wall of buildings made out of bricks and concrete.
© Stefan SteenkisteReviving history. This project offered the opportunity to call to memory the history of Middelkerke as a thriving town on the medieval island of Testerep
And so it does by creating a space in the center of town that creates a renewed relationship with the landscape of dunes
The Venue Building offers a contemporary way to experience the historic coastal landscape in the center of Middelkerke
The sea embankment is reconstructed more towards the sea
creating extra space that offers an open view and breaking the monotony of the straight embankment
This allowed for the Epernay square to be extended by a high artificial dune
on top of which a green square with ponds and fountains arises
This results in a natural and attractive place to linger
with views of the sea and direct access to the beach
© Sebastian van DammeThe dune and the eye-catcher. The artificial dune introduces the surrounding landscape and the gullies back into the center of town. This ‘landscraper’ combines a dune/square and the functions of the casino, multipurpose hall, and hotel with the open space of the beach. Inside and outside interact intensely on all levels. This design adapts to the landscape in a contemporary way, never becoming cheap or loud.
The design minimizes the use of energy and material in the building process
but the choice for more efficient production processes and the application of recycled material also make this a sustainable design
Sustainability and environmental criteria are not an afterthought but of the same crucial order as safety
The artificial dune and the awning part of it near the terraces of the hotel and the casino are an energy-saving element
By offering shadow in summer and insulation during the winter
because it is a renewable and circular material
What draws people to Middelkerke? Thanks to the parking garage underneath the dune, removing cars from the Epernay square and expanded public space towards the sea room has been created for what can safely be called a place of interest, a sight to be seen: the green dune-like square with ponds and fountains, leading to the beach. This is the experience that draws people to Middelkerke
The raw and open character of the sea is smoothly and invitingly fused with the landscape of beach and dune and entwined with the economic and cultural vital functions that give Middelkerke the reserved elegance that characterizes a contemporary seaside resort

‘Duincasino Middelkerke,’ envisioned along the coast of Belgium, has just won the prestigious International Architecture Award 2022. The project was created by DELVA Landscape Architecture & Urbanism and ZJA
under the direction and supervision of Debuild and in collaboration with OZ
and various experts from the Nautilus Consortium
The new venue complex on the coast of Middelkerke will host a casino
and an underground parking garage to ensure a car-free zone at street level
In addition to reinforcing the sea embankment and making it car-free
the design forms part of an improved public space where the boulevard and Epernay square meet
comments: ‘The integral design is a new chapter in the history of Middelkerke
which once originated as a fishing village after dunes were formed on the historic Testerep peninsula
The dunes offered protection against flooding
and the channel between the island and the mainland was directly connected to the North Sea
After a century of large-scale developments and infrastructure projects
the original landscape has largely disappeared under stone and asphalt
Our design will restore the dune landscape to its former glory.’
The teams at DELVA (see more here) and ZJA (see more here) envisioned the public space of ‘Duincasino Middelkerke’ to be integrated within the existing Epernay square
creating a harmonious weaving of fluid geometries
and the beach is a vast artificial dune in which the casino
the public hall for concerts and exhibitions
and sand gullies flowing towards the beach simulate a dune experience
with the climb to the green square on top of the dune
Attached to the open space is a beach hotel with its enigmatic sculptural silhouette
an understated icon with an open grid of curved beams in Accoya wood,’ shares DELVA.
This project was made possible through dedicated collaborations with the various services of the municipality of Middelkerke
the Environment department and the Agency for Maritime Services and Coast of the Flemish government
and production processes and applies recyclable materials where possible
concludes with the following. ‘The International Architecture Award is testimony that we made the right choice two years ago
was immediately drawn to the sober and intuitive design
This award has now validated the unanimous decision
We also had the feeling that the construction team had done its homework thoroughly and had come up with a stylish and sustainable design
This landmark for our town is being constructed now
We are eagerly awaiting the new Venue Building’s domino effect to boost the Middelkerke experience.’
AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
Architects ZJA has teamed up with Bouwtechniek
and landscape architects DELVA to create the Venue Building for the Municipality of Middelkerke—an urban renewal development that functions as a new icon of the city and public destination
The requirements for a new casino building in Middelkerke encompassed a wide array of objectives.
The design had to accommodate a reinforcement of the sea embankment
and a plan to enhance the quality of the public space by removing car traffic and unifying the boulevard and Epernay square
This describes the starting point for the design the architectural studio ZJA made
For its sustainable design that integrates landscape with architecture
Venue Building Middelkerke has recently been awarded a 2022 International Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies
The soul of the design resides in its intimate integration with the landscape
the transformation of the town center into one that is pedestrian-friendly
and the introduction of a landmark building that combines public space
All this while reinforcing the sea dike providing Middelkerke with needed security
A large public space is created by moving the dike further onto the beach
creating an extension of the existing Epernay square while integrating it into the landscape.
An underground parking garage ensures a car-free zone on the street level
and the beach is a huge artificial dune in which the casino
These functions are built underneath the extension of the public space
but all have transparent facades and spectacular views.
The event space serves as a social and cultural meeting point for Middelkerke
and sand gullies flowing towards the beach simulate a dune experience.
is a tourist attraction in its own right.
Attached to it is the beach hotel with its enigmatic sculptural silhouette
an understated icon with an open grid of curved beams in Accoya wood.

Vandeputte win X2O Trofee Lille with one round to go in series
One week after the world cyclocross championships
racing continued this weekend with the final event of the Superprestige series in Middelkerke on Saturday and the second-to-last round of the X2O Trofee in Lille on Sunday
Lucinda Brand soloed to win Superprestige Noordzeecross in Middelkerke(Image credit: Getty Images)Eli Iserbyt took the win at Superprestige Noordzeecross in Middelkerke(Image credit: Getty Images)The heavy rain turned the usually sandy Middelkerke course into a mud fest in the final event of the Superprestige on Saturday.
Lucinda Brand (Baloise Trek Lions) won by a wide margin
crossing the finish line 1:15 ahead of second place Laura Verdonschot
Ceylin Alvarado (Alpecin-Deceuninck) rounded out the podium in third place
Brand took control straight from the start
and a small mistake by Alvarado was enough for the Dutch rider to get a gap
Brand had 25 seconds on Alvarado and Annemarie Worst
Alvarado dropped Worst while Verdonschot was steadily moving forward through riders.
Brand was on her way to victory with Verdonschot in second place
Fire is inimitable. With two laps to go
she has almost doubled her lead over Verdonschot
who is currently in second place and Alvarado in third. Worst finished in fifth place
Alvarado won the final classification of the Telenet Superprestige for the third time in her career.
Eli Iserbyt claimed the 49th cyclocross victory of his career ahead of his Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal teammate Michael Vanthourenhout who was second
Joris Nieuwenhuis (Baloise Trek Lions) finished third
Nieuwenhuis accelerated off the front in the first lap and established a small gap to chasers which included Iserbyt
the Dutch champion only had 25 seconds on the chasers while Vanthourenhout was moving up with Lars van der Haar on his wheel
The Belgian champion made his move on the sixth lap
catching and passing riders until he connected and dropped Nieuwenhuis one lap later
European champion Vanthourenhout passed Nieuwenhuis to take second place
It was the fourth Superprestige victory for Iserbyt
and he also won the classification of the Telenet Superprestige for the second time
World champion Fem Van Empel wins X2O Trofee in Lille(Image credit: Getty Images)Niels Vandeputte celebrates as he crosses the finish line to win in Lille(Image credit: Getty Images)Fem van Empel (Visma-Lease a Bike) made it 19 wins for the season at the X2O Trofee Lille - Krawatencross on Sunday
The world champion soloed to victory in her final cyclocross race of the season
ahead of Lucinda Brand (Baloise Trek Lions) who finished second
with only Brand able to briefly hold her wheel
Van Empel took off solo and Brand then had to concentrate on the second podium spot
Verdonschot fought her way to the third spot after a poor start and was initially joined by Annemarie Worst and Leonie Bentveld
but Verdonschot's pace proved to be too high. The Deceuster-Bonache rider gradually closed the gap to Brand
Van Empel secured the overall title in the series even though she will miss the eighth and final round in Brussels.
Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin-Decueninck) claimed the first UCI C1 cyclocross victory of his career ahead of Joris Nieuwenhuis and Joran Wyseure
X2O Trofee leader Lars van der Haar (Baloise Trek Lions) finished fourth
Van der Haar had started well and formed the leading group together with five other riders until gradually
cracks started to appear in the front group under pressure by the work of Nieuwenhuis and Wyseure. Only Vandeputte could follow the duo
Nieuwenhuis crashed leaving Wyseure and Vandeputte at the front
Nieuwenhuis briefly joined Van der Haar in the chase group before once again catching the two riders in the front
The trio was together as they entered the bell lap
Vandeputte put in a strong attack and was able to hold it to the finish line.

Netherlands-based firm ZJA drew on a lost coastal dune landscape for inspiration with its mixed-use hotel and casino in Middelkerke
The project will overlook the North Sea and is envisioned as an artificial sand dune
as well as a restaurant and events hall situated inside the main dune-like building
On top of this will be the hotel and will feature a wooden latticed facade
The overall design is meant to recreate the local area's original landscape
"Inspiration for the design was found in the story of the town's origin," explains ZJA
"Middelkerke originated on the island of Testerep and was able to grow into an abundant fishing village through the natural protection of a dune and a direct connection to the North Sea via a natural canal
The dunes and water channels of Middelkerke disappeared as a result of urbanization over the last century
"The construction of the casino building in Middelkerke will function as a tool to renew this historic coastal landscape and give it a contemporary meaning
The building program nestles itself naturally in the landscape
restaurant and casino will be situated behind completely transparent facades under the dune
offering spectacular views of the beach and the sea
The volume of the hotel has a strong visual presence and yet a modest footprint
and stands like a boulder amidst this elevated landscape"
There's no word yet on when construction is expected to begin
but the project will make use of recycled materials
the cantilevered form of the dune building will help shade the interior and reduce active cooling requirements
Its interior will be focused on maximizing daylight and ventilation
Visitors will be able to walk on top of the roof of the casino to enjoy views of the North Sea and a new car-free public space will also be created
the project will bolster the local sea wall defenses
the firm is part of a larger consortium named Nautilus
Bureau Bouwtechniek and Furnibo and Democo

Designed with a great love for the sea and the dunes
this spectacular new building is a significant asset for the Belgian coast
This coming weekend an extraordinary venue building will be inaugurated in Middelkerke: Silt
and provides impetus to its context in several respects
The extraordinary design is a creation of architectural studio ZJA and DELVA landscape architects
in collaboration with OZ and Bureau Bouwtechniek and a wealth of experts who together make up the Nautilus Consortium
The architects have anchored the building to its location by integrating it into a new experiential landscape inspired by the former island of Testerep
characterized by dunes (coastal defences) and water channels (prosperity)
The fusion of the building with the landscape ensures that coastal defences
enhanced quality of life and sustainability merge harmoniously into the existing coastline
the hotel tower manifests itself like a new beacon on the coast
a multifunctional events space and underground parking
Integral Coherence as the Basis of an Extraordinary Design
The essence of the design lies in the integration of significant aspects
from the experience of the public to coastal reinforcement and economic impetus
With the once bleak Epernay Square as its centre
the sea embankment and coastal defences are now fused together
and an extensive new experiential landscape has arisen
Underground parking ensures this is a car-free zone
The ground level is thus dedicated as a public space
the dune basin and sand channels leading to the beach give back to Middelkerke the characteristic landscape it holds dear
The climb to the top of the new dune offers breathtaking views and becomes a tourist attraction in its own right
landscape architect and founder and partner at DELVA
“Skyscrapers determine the skyline of a modern city
For Silt the design team sought a ‘landscraper’
a new and unique dune landscape with a programme inside
We have deployed the characteristic landscape as a means of integrating all the tasks set us in a way that looks natural
The result is a new dune landscape to be experienced
a landscape in which residents and visitors can once again enjoy the view
the design team has produced an integral concept of high quality
this is a structure integrated into a landscape that in every respect has a sustainable relationship with its environment
A modest yet striking tower with an open lattice of curved beams of Accoya wood
it exudes not just the connection with its surroundings but sustainability as well
Because sustainability is just as central to the design as safety
The aim has been to optimize energy supply
“The design rewrites the historical relationship between the seaside resort and the sea
and with its modest hotel tower it adds a lot of new public space to the location while having a relatively small footprint
the hotel tower is an eye-catching building

Silt is unassuming while having maximum impact
The catalyst for a new vibrant centre of Middelkerke.”
as well as great love for the sea and the dunes
It is a project that perfectly reflects the character of the seaside resort
and that can mark the start of the creation of a new centre for Middelkerke
is particularly proud of the new landmark in his municipality
Silt will be given new sea defences that can withstand the worst storms expected in a thousand years
It can cope with extreme weather including extraordinarily high waves and water more than two metres above the present sea level
It makes Middelkerke the best protected place on the entire Belgian coast
“You immediately feel that Silt far transcends local ambitions
Whether it’s a matter of innovative and aesthetic coastal defences or the development of a fantastic tourist attraction
it will undoubtedly become an irresistible pull
To say nothing of the beautiful architecture we are gifting to our fixed
The project has been completely remarkably quickly
In February 2022 the building team began excavating the immense construction site
This is attributable to the close collaboration and dedication of all the parties involved
Guy De Meyer (responsible for the project on behalf of developer Debuild) says
This has proven of immense value several times over
the proprietors added several new elements to the programme
Because of our open and structured communication
we were quickly able to come to a unanimous decision and we succeeded in delivering the project on time even with those new elements
That is an achievement of which we are justly proud
We have executed a unique building project on the Belgian coast
dedication and tenacity of the combination of TM Furnibo-Democo
all its building partners and the entire site team.”

World Champion barely hangs on for overall series victory
Van der Poel and Van der Haar.(Image credit: Tim de Waele/TDWSport.com)The final series podium: Pauwels
it was world champion Mathieu van der Poel (BKCP-Powerplus) who captured the overall series victory
The second place from Van der Poel behind race winner and final rival Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Napoleon Games) was just enough to hold on to his series lead and the 27.500 euro bank cheque that comes along with it.
“It was very close but I’m very satisfied,” Van der Poel told Vier after the race
Van der Powel had to finish right behind him to hang onto the series lead
During the first half of the race Van der Poel seemed to have everything under control
Instead of riding behind Pauwels he rode in front
distancing a group that featured Pauwels but also Wout Van Aert (Vastgoedservice-Golden Palace) and Lars van der Haar (Giant-Alpecin)
The world champion made the difference by hopping the barriers and hopping a ditch just before the finish line
“A few times I created a gap but I twice got stuck in the sand
which cost me a lot of energy,” Van der Poel said
With three laps to go Van der Poel was once again leading the race until he went over the handlebars when hopping into a short sand section
While Van der Poel recovered he was passed by Wout Van Aert
During the penultimate lap Pauwels exploited a small mistake from Van der Poel to create a gap
Pauwels overtook Van Aert by hopping over the barriers and then sped away by hopping over the ditch
When hitting the bell lap Pauwels was the virtual winner of the Superprestige series since Van Aert rode in between Pauwels and Van der Poel
“When Kevin quickly created a gap and left Wout behind it was hard
I bridged back up with Wout and gave everything I had in the final lap
With the barriers and the ditch I had a few more cards to play but in the end I was wasted,” Van der Poel said
Pauwels rode his best passage of the sand section but behind him Van Aert rode his worst and saw Van der Poel riding away
Pauwels spotted that the situation had turned around in favour of Van der Poel
The gap was too big to close down for Van Aert
It’s great that I was riding well but it’s too bad Wout wasn’t a tiny bit stronger
I kept an eye on them but saw that Mathieu had dropped Wout,” Pauwels told Vier
Pauwels once again hopped the barriers and the ditch and headed for his third Superprestige victory of the season
When looking back Pauwels spotted Van der Poel and he realized the overall win wouldn’t be for him
He celebrated the race victory without a smile
“It’s too bad but the win adds glamour to my season
Next year it will be even harder,” Pauwels said
Pauwels clearly made him work hard for his money
Van Aert was third ahead of Lars van der Haar
Tom Meeusen and Jens Adams (Vastgoedservice-Golden Palace)
Sven Nys (Crelan-AA Drink) bounced back from a poor start to take seventh place ahead of Belgian champion Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Napoleon Games)
Vincent Baestaens (BKCP-Powerplus) and Tim Merlier (Sunweb-Napoleon Games)
Meeus second and Philipsen makes it an Alpecin-Fenix 1-3
Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Fenix) took hold of the second Belgian road race title of his career
with a sprint victory at the end of a chaotic race in Middelkerke.
who won a breakthrough title in 2019 before winning stages at the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia
got the better of Jordi Meeus (Bora-Hansgrohe) in the dash for the line.
Merlier's teammate Jasper Philipsen claimed the final spot on the podium as Alpecin-Fenix sprinted with two riders after playing both cards throughout the day.
made up of a long opening lap through windswept De Moeren and then six local laps of 13.6km
but there were plenty of riders not interested in a bunch sprint who wanted to rip the race up
In the absence of the defending champion and favourite Wout van Aert
there was a sense that anything was up for grabs
The early breakaway of 14 riders contained some big names
and they quickly opened a lead of six minutes
and a huge surge in pace saw the main bunches come roaring back
Most of the pre-race favourites were up in the front peloton
but Intermarché were caught out and spent the rest of the day on the back foot.
Merlier and Philipsen both crashed on the run-in to the local circuit as the race became increasingly chaotic
With the remnants of the early break caught
Sep Vanmarcke went on a solo attack and was soon joined by 10 riders: Philipsen
allowing Merlier and Alpecin-Fenix - the most represented team in the bunch - to sit back
Lotto Soudal then had shoulder responsibility for their leader Arnaud De Lie
that situation was turned on its head when Philipsen punctured and dropped from the group on the penultimate lap
Alpecin started to chase and the gap steadily dropped.
Remco Evenepoel tried to upset the order for a QuickStep team with no real sprint card
The youngster attacked from the bunch and made it over to the front of what was a fragmenting lead group
Evenepoel put them under serious pressure but was never able to drop them and go clear
the race then came back together for a sprint from a reduced and tired group
with Meeus running him very close to take the silver medal
De Lie could only manage a more distant sixth place.

Meeusen posts another strong result in elites

While temperatures dove under the freezing point and a cold wind tortured the crowds
the weather didn't seem to bother the Belgian champion
It's the eighth victory of the season for Nys
but more importantly it was also his third win in five days
boosting his morale just before the all important weeks after Christmas
"These are the heydays of 'cross and a lot of people came over to watch this race although it isn't included in any competition
Due to the absence of Albert and Stybar winning seems normal but it always feels good to do so
If I would have been training I'd have suffered just as much," Nys said
Nys accelerated during the third lap and the Belgian champion was joined by young Tom Meeusen and Klaas Vantornout
The latter had to let go of the leaders after going over the handlebars
Nys rode a steady pace and never worried about Meeusen
and halfway through the race the duo had a huge gap on the first chaser's group: Klaas Vantornout
Meeusen had to let go of Nys with three laps to go but the 21-year-old Belgian didn't fade completely and easily held on to second place
"I'm surprised that after my second place in Antwerp I'm on the podium again with the pro's
I benefitted because Nys caught all the wind and he allowed me to stay with him for a long time; he probably wasn't worried about me," Meeusen told Cyclingnews
Further back it was Vantornout who stormed away from the other chasers and the Sunweb Projob rider easily rode towards third place
"In Kalmthout I rode a perfect race on a similar course but here I made a mistake and went over the handlebars
On one occasion I tried to get back near the front and suddenly I had ten seconds on the others
There were twenty more seconds but to close down that gap on Nys on this course isn't possible," Vantornout told Cyclingnews
A group of five riders battled for fourth place and it was Dieter Vanthourenhout who won it
After a strong start in which he rode in second place for about a lap
"I ran out of gas towards the end of the race," Page told Cyclingnews
In previous years Page always did well in Middelkerke with a couple of second places and a fourth place last year
"Compared to those this is reasonably good
especially because it is the fifth day since I flew back from the US which is normally the worst day," Page said
There were many more US riders at the start in Middelkerke including the Canondale-Cyclocrossworld team's Jeremy Powers
who rode in second place during the first lap before fading back to seventeenth place
Teammate James Driscoll choose different tactics
The 23-year-old battled for tenth place with two younger Belgians and eventually claimed a solid eleventh place
when I crashed early on with Ryan Trebon," Driscoll told Cyclingnews
On Sunday Driscoll finished 38th in the World Cup of Kalmthout and his performance in Middelkerke surely boosted his confidence
Team-mate Powers opted not to race in Kalmthout in order to get used to the European clock
"My start was fantastic but suddenly they accelerated and off they went
In the US we ease off once in a while but here it's flat out all the time
I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world right now," Powers told Cyclingnews
Further back Daniel Summerhill rode a decent race
finishing just ahead of compatriot Brian Matter
At noon many former riders battled each other in an all-stars race
Coach of the Belgian national team Rudy De Bie won the event
besting his brother and former world champion of 1989 Danny De Bie and Johan Museeuw
The North Sea cross was organized for the 51st time
It began in February 1959 and is the oldest standing cyclo-cross race
Further details have emerged concerning the German bunker found during works ahead of the construction of a new casino building in the seaside resort of Middekerke (West Flanders)
The bunker forms part of Atlantic Wall defences and dates from the Nazi occupation of Belgium during the Second World War
The old casino building on the front in Middelkerke has been completely demolished
The bunker was discovered during preparations for the construction of the new building that will be erected on the same spot
VRT’s Tijs Mauroo was one of the first people to step inside the bunker in decades
He says most local people were aware that two bunkers had been constructed underneath the casino
but the main question concerned the state in which they would be found
The second bunker still needs to be localised
When he visited the first bunker together with archaeologists Tijs saw with his own eyes that all traces of ammunition
weapons and personal belongings had been removed
These were probably taken away at the end of the war or shortly after the Liberation by Canadian and British troops
The subterranean rooms are well-preserved and include several striking notices including one banning the use of electrical equipment (top)
The discovery of the bunker is unlikely to delay building work as it is not unique
It will be properly examined and studied before it is demolished
Demolition of the bunker will be no easy task given its concrete construction and 2-metre-thick walls
Mayor Jean-Marie Dedecker (right wing liberal) of Middelkerke is relieved a lengthy archaeological examination of the German construction will not be required
