Barcelona-based studio Barozzi Veiga takes to Belgium to design a new Town Hall in the coastal city of Nieuwpoort
The proposal is intended to harmonize with the city’s historic urban fabric and its traditional architecture
complementing the existing Town Hall and Stadshalle and its Belfry
the complex would create an urban ensemble of elements both old and new
The new addition is thoughtfully composed of both built and void spaces
weaving a private garden for the office spaces along with a more public garden opening onto the Army Plaza
providing an area for locals and visitors alike to relax and enjoy the surrounding area
The design of Barozzi Veiga’s Nieuwpoort Town Hall is a contemporary translation of the city’s traditional architecture
creates a connection with the existing environment through its materiality
sawtooth roof structure further stands as a modern abstraction of the pointed arcades and layered spires of its historic neighbors
as it hosts a series of elongated skylights which allow sunlight to flood the interiors
This creates an inviting atmosphere and counters the otherwise minimalistic space
layered silhouette that stands out from the other buildings in the town
The combination of classic and modern elements creates a building that is both visually striking and respectful of the city’s traditional architecture
The proposed Town Hall for Nieuwpoort is designed by Barozzi Veiga to balance the old and new
drawing on the site’s history and injecting new public and office spaces
The architects envision a contextual intervention
honoring the architectural heritage with a modest and measured proposal
respecting and strengthening the area’s past while also making an impact with its autonomy
with the architecture reflecting the area and the area being impacted by the architecture
the balance between the old and the new is maintained
creating a sense of harmony and continuity
The result is an architecture that is both of its place and distinct
adding to the environment while also paying homage to it
the high sawtooth roof hosts elongated skylights
the proposal would introduce both public and private gardens to Nieuwpoort

David Chipperfield Architects has unveiled his restoration plans for the Grand Hotel in Nieuwpoort, Belgium
the project converts the structure into a residential building
while seeking to reinstate its landmark status
the architecture will also take on an extension that underlines a “sensitive understanding of heritage value and entails reinterpretation and invention as well as restoration”
Commissioned by VDD Project Development and designed by David Chipperfield Architects London, the Grand residential building is set for completion in 2024. Adapting and extending the historic building, the project engages directly with the original fabric of construction.
© VDD Project DevelopmentThe new design will not impose a style or signature to the building, nor create a contrast between the historic fabric and its new additions, according to the architects. The intervention “seeks to restore the building’s grandeur while converting it into a residential building for private apartments with a restaurant, bar, and retail on the ground floor along with a residents’ pool at basement level”.
Regaining its status as a landmark on the beachfront, The Grand residential building allows a nuanced reading of the history of the Grand Hotel, designed originally by Belgian architect Apollon Lagache in 1924. Located at the seaside resort of Nieuwpoort, the building deteriorated as the city grew and as war ravaged the waterfront.

A pontoon carrying an enormous concrete threshold
Final destination: Nieuwpoort harbour channel
this is a major component of the storm surge barrier currently under construction by the Agency for Maritime Services and Coast (MSC)
This storm surge barrier will protect Nieuwpoort against extreme storm surges
42.1 metre long and five metre high – that is the size of this concrete threshold
It was under construction at Kallo over the past few months
This threshold will soon be installed in the harbour channel at Nieuwpoort between both abutments of the storm surge barrier
Director Civil Engineering Works at Jan De Nul Group
said: “Our Belgian coast is vulnerable to rising sea levels
The storm surge barriers being constructed by Jan De Nul in Nieuwpoort fit in a series of public measures aimed at protecting 67 km of coastline.”
“It is a unique hydraulic structure in which civil engineering and maritime technology know-how and expertise join forces
The Immersing the concrete threshold is a major milestone in this project
An exploit achieved by Jan De Nul in cooperation with Herbosch-Kiere.”

Sandvik strengthens its strategic presence in North America and increases production of tungsten powder using renewable energy
Tungsten is one of the hardest materials on Earth with an extremely high melting point and density
making it a critical metal in mining and manufacturing tools
“Not a day goes by when you don’t use an object containing tungsten or a product made by a tungsten tool,” says Alex Nieuwpoort
President of Wolfram Bergbau- und Hütten in Austria
tungsten powder producer and a part of Sandvik
Tungsten literally provides the cutting edge of tooling inserts and drill bits for machining and mining applications
To secure the supply of such a strategic material for both Sandvik and its customers across different industries
“Having a North American footprint is important to us and our customers as it reduces logistical challenges and enables shorter lead times
With the acquisition of BTI Sandvik also gains access to the technology of producing high-quality tungsten powder using electricity,” says Nieuwpoort
BTI uses electricity produced by hydropower at the nearby Niagara Falls power station
This is also used to produce hydrogen by electrolysis
which adds to the sustainability of BTI’s operations
The BTI acquisition also reduces the environmental impact since Sandvik can serve both customers and its own units in North America without the need for long-distance shipping
“This minimizes the risk of disruptions in our supply chain and ensures a steady
which is very important to Sandvik,” says Nieuwpoort
BTI specializes in tungsten powder in larger grain sizes
This means the two companies complement each other well
by offering different grain sizes to address diverse applications and industries
“Drilling into rock requires different material properties compared to drilling into steel
Larger-sized grains are best suited for tools used in rock drilling
as that requires hot hardness combined with shock resistance and toughness,” Nieuwpoort explains
“High-speed machining applications on the other hand
require submicron and uniform grain sizes to avoid cracking due to high stress and high temperatures during drilling.”
and the ways in which the companies complement each other
“Sharing our experiences and expertise
and learning from one another will greatly increase our capabilities
paving the way for new production methods and an extended powder portfolio
am very excited to see what the future holds.”
New York and a vision to become a leading producer of tungsten-based materials
The company uses the latest furnace and powder classification technologies
The furnaces change intermediate tungsten materials into pure tungsten powders of up to 99.999 percent purity
With over 30 years of experience and a sole focus on tungsten powder products
BTI produces high quality materials optimized for a wide range of commercial and industrial applications
BTI customizes powders to meet specifications for both physical and chemical properties including particle size
Critical characteristics are accurately measured at several steps in the manufacturing process to assure the consistent quality of finished tungsten powders

In the Nieuwpoort shipping channel and marinas
Jan De Nul Group recently carried out maintenance dredging works with cutter suction dredger Hendrik Geeraert and split barges Magellano and Verrazzano
are the CO2-reducing measures taken by Jan De Nul Group
An example for the industry and future dredging works in Europe
a specificity of this project is the CO2 reduction measures enthusiastically taken by JDN
encouraged by the Flemish Authority and the Maritime Services and Coastal Agency
One of the measures was to run the vessels on renewable biofuel
Jan De Nul kitted out its local office with its newest energy-efficient site office module that consumes 80 percent less energy than a standard site office
The maintenance dredging works in the marinas of Nieuwpoort on the Belgian coast got underway earlier this week
An example for the industry and future dredging works in Europe,” their official release stated
The maintenance dredging works in Nieuwpoort entail the dredging works in the port access channel and in the marinas
A large part of the dredging works are executed by means of the cutter suction dredger (CSD) Hendrik Geeraert and the split hopper barges Magellano and Verrazzano
Jan De Nul Group announced its commitment to emit 15% less CO2 on this project
the vessels Magellano and Verrazzano will be equipped with renewable biofuel from certified and sustainable waste flows
Jan De Nul Group now has three vessels in the Benelux sailing on sustainable biofuel
three Jan De Nul vessels in the Benelux are currently running on 100% sustainable fuel
our brand new trailing suction hopper dredger Sanderus will come to Belgium to execute maintenance dredging works on the river Scheldt and alongside the coast,” said Michel Deruyck
Head of the Energy Team of Jan De Nul Group
this new dredger is a ULEv (Ultra-Low Emission vessel)
It is equipped with a state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment system that extracts up to 99% of the nanoparticles from exhaust gases
Add to this the renewable fuel that will be used for this vessel and you’ll have a huge CO2 reduction and strongly decreased air emissions.”
measurements show that these vessels emit more than 90% less nitrous oxides
Jan De Nul Group also invests in the energy efficiency of its infrastructure and starts rolling out its ACT GREEN programme on the site in Nieuwpoort

To put together a new book of images of World War I, The First World War: Unseen Glass Plate Photographs of the Western Front, Carl De Keyzer restored original plates made by photographers whose work
was printed without fanfare and viewed at a much smaller size
De Keyzer’s book offers photographs of soldiers
and landscapes in a large format that represents the war with startling clarity
Some of the most striking images in the book are this series of photographs by Arthur Brusselle
the Belgian government commissioned Brusselle to go to the places where the war had hit hard and record what he saw
These plates are held by the archive of the City of Bruges
Two of the towns in the photographs below—Diksmuide and Nieuwpoort—were the sites of the Belgian Army’s final stand against the invading German Army
created a 22-mile defensive line from Nieuwpoort to a village named Zuidschote
during which the Belgians purposefully flooded part of this landscape in order to deter German advances
ended in defeat for the Germans and allowed Belgium to keep a small percentage of its land under its own control
Long Course Weekend Belgium is a unique festival of sport
part of the global series originating in Pembrokeshire
this one is split over three days with the swim on Friday
And to make it accessible to athletes of every level (and even children)
there are also multiple distances to choose from – specifically the run – which is anything from 5 kms to a marathon
For those training for a full or half distance triathlon
this is a great opportunity to test yourself on all three disciplines but in a slightly kinder environment
from the memorial dating back to the First World War to the monument of King Albert
As athletes bike and run their way around the city
they’re sure to go past at least one of these popular attractions
Flowing through the middle of the town is the river delta
Getting to Nieuwpoort should be fairly easy for most
with good links from from the nearby Oostende-Brugge or Brussels airports by train
it’s just over 1 hour and 30 minutes drive from Brussels to Nieuwpoort or just under 1 hour from Calais
perfect for an evening drink overlooking the sea
The beautiful thing about LCW Belgium is that it’s a real family friendly event
even if that means being a spectator and not taking part – there’s just so much to see and do
With the distances split up over three days
athletes can pick and choose what they’d like to participate in
It’s a great race for triathletes in training too
as they have the opportunity to really focus on each discipline separately
The swim is the first event of the weekend
Athletes will swim either one or two loops in the river delta
the water is calm but it can get a little chilly
Cycle Flanders Fields: All three distances start and finish in the city centre
with each route following the World War 1 front line towards Diksmuide
and passing historic monuments and cemeteries
all while following in your hero’s footsteps
If you’ve always wanted to walk (or run) the red carpet
the more of this beautiful city you’ll be able to see
from coastal landscapes and dunes to quaint local towns
which makes for a fantastic atmosphere for the athletes
The start and finish is in the same place of each discipline
and you can actually run or cycle along the whole swim course
where you can set up camp at one of the monuments or cafes and cheer the athletes as they race past
Nieuwpoort Bad is the best place to watch the run but make sure you head along the boardwalk in time for the finish
When you’re speeding along on the bike or running through the city
it’s quite hard to really take in the incredible monuments you’re passing
Belgium is incredibly proud of its history
and by spending a few extra days in the city after the race
you’ll be able to see the Menin Gate Memorial as well as many other key monuments
and don’t forget to walk along the port and visit The King Albert Memorial
About a 40 minute drive from Nieuwpoort is Bruges
which if you’ve never been to is a beautiful city to explore
quaint Belgium chocolate shops and of course plenty of bars and restaurants serving that delicious Belgium beer
You could spend hours meandering through the mediaeval streets or take a boat trip on the canal and see the city from a different perspective

a work of art by the Belgian artist Jan Fabre
is being removed from its location in Nieuwpoort on Tuesday
The work will be restored first and will receive a new location afterwards
The work is a bronze statue showing a giant turtle carrying the artist on its back
It will receive a thin layer of gold to protect it better against the harsh weather conditions at the coast
This will happen in an atelier in Oudenaarde (East Flanders) where it was created
the statue will be transferred back to Nieuwpoort
where it will be put in front of the cultural centre Ysara
The coastal resort of Nieuwpoort bought the work 10 years ago for the first edition of the art event Beaufort
windy weather and the salty air at the coast had an impact on the bronze
while at the same time the statue was a popular climbing spot for children
