Catholic schools in the suburbs are seeking other ways to fund scholarships

“It’s about affirming our commitment to Catholic education,” school officials said when they announced the program “Every donation to this fund directly supports students

The fund’s launch comes as Catholic and other private schools face the fallout from state lawmakers’ decision last year to end Invest in Kids Scholarship Tax Credit Program
The program offered tax breaks to private donors who provide funds for low-income children to attend private schools
At least two suburban Catholic schools that closed this year — St

According to the Illinois Department of Revenue
there were 15,075 student recipients of the scholarships during the 2023-24 school year
the program provided more than $25 million of aid to help approximately 5,000 low-income families send their kids to Catholic schools

I’m here in Orléans with my daughter Liz at the Ottawa launch of “inclusive dining” at St-Hubert Rotisserie
The Sunday afternoon program offers a welcoming space geared to the needs of autistic individuals and their families who might otherwise find a restaurant visit overwhelming

St-Hubert worked with the Quebec foundations Autiste & Majeure and Giant Steps to develop the inclusive dining program

They’re the experts and we were discussing with them and said
‘Maybe we could hire autistic people.’ They said

It includes ear protectors for individuals who might be sensitive to noise
fidget toys and stress balls to help relieve anxiety
a sheet of visual cues that can help an autistic person express their emotions
and a timer — an essential tool for many autism families that helps manage the waiting for food to come to the table
I’m irresistibly drawn to the multi-coloured silicone “push pop,” a satisfying substitute for popping bubble wrap
“It’s simple because it’s making sure that the staff is well trained in the reality that autistic individuals experience every day,” said Alain Bessette
Giant Steps’ project manager for inclusive employment initiatives
We’re not looking to stick families off in a corner somewhere

Bessette hopes that more restaurants will follow St-Hubert’s lead and begin offering inclusive dining
“It doesn’t really cost anything and I find it makes for better employees,” Bessette said
“And it brings in a whole group of customers that never had access before
but when we launched the project we had several families say
‘It’s the first time we’ve ever come to a restaurant
We’re comfortable coming to a restaurant now.’ The staff is trained so that
should an autistic individual become upset or have a meltdown
“But I’ve never heard of an autistic individual having a meltdown in a St-Hubert,” he continued
the chances of that happening are the same as with any other child
I know some autistic individuals who are a server’s dream

but the company doesn’t keep track of the numbers

An artist's rendering of the new terminal at Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport.
Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport (YHU) has started work on its new passenger terminal, which is being built in conjunction with Porter Airlines, with an opening planned for mid-2025.
Earlier this year, YHU and Porter said they were jointly developing a new nine-gate passenger terminal spanning 225,000 ft.² (21,000 m²). All building systems are being designed to be fully electric-powered.
Porter will utilize a combination of De Havilland Dash 8-400s and Embraer E195-E2s to operate domestic routes from YHU. Other airlines will also be able to use the new terminal.
Porter has partnered with Macquarie Asset Management to form the joint company Partenaires d’infrastructure YHU (Quebec) to manage terminal development. Porter and Macquarie have said the terminal will have “an overall modern design aesthetic,” featuring “lounge-style seating for all passengers and access to food and beverage concessions, as well as retail vendors.”
Preparatory construction work that started Aug. 16 “confirms [the airport’s] shift towards establishing itself in commercial aviation,” YHU says in a statement.
The airport says it is now focusing on “excavation and leveling of the grounds,” noting that safety fences will be installed around the construction site.
Yanic Roy, CEO of the airport, adds: “The YHU transformation will increase the airport capacity of the greater Montreal area and consolidate regional air service in Quebec. With this major infrastructure, travelers can expect a better experience, while the region receives significant economic return.”
While a mid-2025 opening is being targeted, more specific details will be coming, according to the airport. YHU says it will provide a complete schedule and more information on terminal construction this autumn.
Porter has cited 11 potential domestic airports to be served from YHU: Calgary, Charlottetown, Edmonton, Halifax, Moncton, Quebec, St. John’s, Vancouver, Winnipeg and both Toronto airports—Billy Bishop and Pearson.

2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today marks the beginning of preparatory construction works for the new terminal at Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport
The next phase of the project focuses on excavation and levelling of the grounds
At no time the operation of the airport will be compromised
as safety fences will be installed around the construction site to isolate the works
Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport announced its partnership with Porter Airlines for the construction of a new terminal covering an area of 21,000 m²
YHU firmly confirms its shift towards establishing itself in commercial aviation
“The YHU transformation will increase the airport capacity of the Greater Montréal Area and consolidate regional air service in Québec
while the region receives significant economic return
We thank Porter for their profound contribution to the airport developments
as well as the regional stakeholders for their crucial collaboration on this infrastructure project,” stated Yanic Roy
It is worth mentioning that a Development Committee has been established to involve elected officials from the region and stakeholders from the ecosystem in the development of this ambitious project
the YHU Committee has recently announced the creation of four working groups that will focus on mobility
The Montreal office of the general contractor PCL has been entrusted with the execution of the works
They have a well-recognized expertise in the airport sector
having completed more than 30 construction or expansion projects at airports in North America
they have notably distinguished themselves with the construction of the Deloitte Tower in downtown Montreal and the Storage and Preservation Building of Library and Archives Canada located in Gatineau
An official announcement will be made in the fall to provide a detailed schedule and more information about the upcoming construction works leading to the delivery of the new terminal
we can confirm that the new terminal will be fully operational by mid-2025
Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport (YHU) is managed by a non-profit organization established in 2000
which has owned the airport and its grounds since it was transferred by Transport Canada in 2004
YHU aims to enhance and fully utilize the potential of this critical infrastructure for the city and the region
while adhering to the best airport practices and considering the well-being of the neighbouring residents
In a bold move to revitalize and expand Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport (YHU)
Porter Airlines is investing in a commercial air service terminal
This project aims to turn the general aviation airport into a bustling commercial hub
catering to the needs of both the local community and the broader region
Set to encompass an expansive 21,000 square meters with nine bridged gates
the new terminal at YHU is designed to mirror the comfortable and lounge-like experience that passengers have enjoyed at Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ)
creating an environment that will streamline passengers' journey and save them precious time
the facility is designed to accommodate up to 4 million passengers annually
born out of extensive community consultations
aims to bring forth a bustling terminal that not only caters to the demands of modern air travel but also encapsulates the rich history and aspirations of the community
"The transformation of Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport is a unique and collaborative endeavor,” said CEO of YHU Yanic Roy
“From community engagement to sustainable initiatives
we're confident that this project will usher in a new era of aviation for the region.”
Once a major player on Canada's aviation landscape
the airport's importance waned over the years
the airport has primarily served general aviation purposes
hosting flight schools and maintenance operations
The pivotal partnership with Porter Airlines is expected to reinvigorate the airport and provide the necessary impetus for its transformation
"Porter is bringing a lot of experience in airport development,” Roy said
“We’ve seen the impressive results at Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto
along with their commitment to cooperating with regional airlines
Construction of the terminal started in August
"Montreal is a key focus for our future expansion plan,” said President and CEO of Porter Aviation Holdings Inc
“Having a unique and differentiated offering at YHU will allow us to grow at a faster pace."
Deluce emphasizes that while the YHU terminal will follow the theme and concept of Billy Bishop
but the theme and concept of a comfortable lounge environment complemented by internet access
and ample space will be carried forward," he said
The new terminal will serve as a hub for Porter's operations
with plans to deploy their E195-E2 aircraft and Dash aircraft to offer a range of domestic destinations across Canada
The project will not only cater to Porter's expansion but will also facilitate regional air service
Porter will collaborate with regional carrier Pascan through a code-share agreement
This partnership will allow Pascan to tap into state-of-the-art facilities and expand its network across the region
“Porter will be the only carrier offering a convenient service from both YUL and YHU,” Deluce said
“We'll be well-positioned to capture the widest range of traffic from the Montreal marketplace."
The project involves a comprehensive partnership between Porter and Macquarie Asset Management (MAM)
an experienced airport asset operator and investor
MAM is one of the world’s largest infrastructure managers
The investment in YHU adds to its global airport and airport-related infrastructure experience
which includes current investments in the operators of Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Ecuador; El Dorado International Airport in Colombia; Aberdeen
Farnborough and Southampton Airports in the United Kingdom; and North Queensland and Perth Airports in Australia
building a 21,000-square-meter terminal and associated equipment,” Deluce said
which brings operational expertise and financial capital to the project."
YHU leadership established a development table that includes elected officials
innovation and tourism were organized to address key elements of adding a commercial service airport to the region
Roy underscored that the project isn't just about physical changes; it's about aligning with the community's aspirations
"The project reflects the needs and desires of our community,” he said
we've learned that the public seeks increased flight options during the day
Roy said the anticipated economic benefits of the project are substantial
Aside from the revenues generated through landing fees and terminal activities
the project is expected to stimulate real estate development around the airport
more than 3.5 million square meters of space and is less than 10 kilometers from downtown Montreal
which makes it accessible to a significant portion of the population
“The airport's economic contribution is set to soar
with projected annual revenue increasing significantly."
Sustainability is also a crucial aspect of the project
as Porter is committed to being net carbon-zero
Electric ground equipment and renewable energy sources will minimize the environmental footprint of the terminal
The airport's commitment to a greener future aligns with the province's hydroelectric focus
a province that heavily relies on clean and affordable hydroelectric energy
Our plan includes adopting electric ground support equipment
and we're even exploring the possibility of integrating solar panels," Roy explained
“This commitment to sustainability extends to the airport's new electric shuttle system
enhancing accessibility and reducing environmental impact.”
"While Porter Airlines is the anchor carrier
the financial and operational conditions will be the same for all airlines
We're actively engaging with multiple carriers to ensure a thriving aviation ecosystem," Roy said
Note: The Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport project is expected to be fully operational by the summer of 2025
