Former Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais has found a landing spot ahead of the 2025 season
Padres farm director Ryley Westman and assistant farm director Mike Daly overlapped with Servais as members of the Rangers organization
Preller interviewed Servais in late 2015 for the Padres’ managerial vacancy before San Diego hired Andy Green and Seattle hired Servais in the same role
Servais led the Mariners to a 680-642 record and
their first playoff appearance in 21 years
The Mariners failed to return to the postseason each of the next two years, which included a collapse in the standings last summer. After the Mariners watched a 10-game lead in the American League West turn into a five-game deficit, president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto fired Servais
a former Mariners catcher who had been working as a coordinator in the organization’s farm system
Servais, 57, is not the first former big-league manager to join the Padres’ minor-league system in recent years. In 2022, months after being fired by the St. Louis Cardinals
Mike Shildt was hired by San Diego as a player development consultant
who succeeded Bob Melvin as Padres manager last offseason
received a contract extension through 2027 in November

Scott Servais is back in the big leagues just months after his tenure as Seattle Mariners manager came to an end
And it’s with a team that has an interesting relationship with the M’s
Mariners reach deals with seven arbitration eligible players
The 57-year-old Servais is joining the San Diego Padres as a special assistant in player development, as reported Saturday by The Athletic and confirmed by the San Diego Union-Tribune
Servais was let go by the Mariners in August
just over a month before the end of what was his ninth season as the team’s manager
He went 680-642 as Seattle’s skipper
finishing with a winning record five times and leading the Mariners in 2022 to their only playoff appearance in the past 23 years
Only Lou Piniella lays claim to a better tenure as manager in Mariners history
What makes Servais’ new franchise interesting is the fact that the Mariners and Padres share a spring training complex in Peoria
and the teams play each other annually as each other’s “natural rival” in interleague play
Servais is returning to his roots in a sense with his new job
as he worked in player development for the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angeles prior to joining the Mariners ahead of the 2016 season
He was the Rangers’ senior director of player personnel from 2004-10
working in the Texas front office at the same time as current Padres general manager A.J
farm director Ryley Westman and assistant farm director Mike Daly
Servais was assistant general manager under current Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto
Dipoto resigned from the Angels during the 2015 season and took the GM role with the Mariners later that year
and soon after he hired Servais as a first-time manager
played 11 MLB seasons from 1991 to 2001 as a catcher with the Houston Astros
The Mariners replaced Servais last season with another former MLB catcher from the same era and first-time manager
Seattle had fallen from a 10-game lead in the AL West in mid-June to a 64-64 record and five games back of a playoff spot at the time of the change
The M’s went 21-13 in the remaining 34 games under Wilson but finished 85-77
which was 3 1/2 games behind Houston for the AL West title and just a game out of making the playoffs in the wild card race

The Padres have hired Scott Servais as a special assistant in their baseball operations and player development departments, The Athletic’s Dennis Lin reports
It represents Servais’ first job since he was fired as the Mariners’ manager back in August
While Servais is best known for his nine seasons as Seattle’s manager and his 11-year playing career
Servais also has a lot of front-office experience
His Mariners tenure was preceded by four seasons as the Angels’ assistant GM
and was the Rangers’ assistant of player development from 2006-10
Padres president of baseball operations A.J
Preller also worked in the Texas front office when Servais was there
plus Preller interviewed Servais as a managerial candidate during the 2015-16 offseason before Servais took the job in Seattle
Servais said in August that he hoped to keep managing in the future
though his name apparently wasn’t linked to any of the managerial vacancies that arose this past fall
This position in San Diego doesn’t necessarily change Servais’ goal of getting back into a big league dugout
as it allows him to stay connected to the game in another capacity
and mentioned in his retirement statement that he was looking to “seek out opportunities in coaching.”
San Diego Padres Matt Adams Scott Servais
And I don’t think you want it to be servais
In what ways did he put the team in position for success
“fine” isn’t what I’m looking from a leader
The environment he created for the younger players and the way he handled the pitching put them in position for as much success as was possible for a half-assed roster and analytical team with a hitting strategy that complicated everything and confused everybody
It wasn’t until after Edgar (apparently) convinced the Jerry to put out consistent lineups and forget the microscopic splits that the offense came to life
Shildt is not going anywhere for awhile and Servais will be another set of eyes in regards to roster construction
AJ is good at getting good people around him so this is a positive move
He’s signed to give Servais to the organization
I don’t think a manager that guided them to a 93 win season
finished second in NL manager of the year voting
and was just extended for two more years has Scott Servais to worry about
Schildt won that Padres clubhouse last season
“Just some dudes playing baseball.”
I loved the way he handled the pitching staff
What he did with a team that went into the season with really only one outfielder was impressive
Scott Servais should not worry anyone about their job
You’ve listened to one too many Joe Rogan podcasts
We’ll see how Shildt does in year two but he was the first Padre Mgr to get them to 90Ws since Black and before him Bochy
Second winningest team in their 55 year history
Accomplishing that after easily the most disappointing season in their history all while having payroll reduced by 80m with guys like Soto
and Hader being dealt or walking as FA’s
Schildt seems like the perfect skipper in SD
@wallabeechamp Why is it so difficult for you to accept events for face value
Not everything needs to have an ulterior motive and be mental gymnastics
Embarrassed and disappointed losing the WS
But I’ve moved passed those events quickly
Will enjoy the ups and downs of it just like I did last season and every season before that
The Padres will end up like the Tigers after Mr ilitch death
Owners like Seidler and ilitch are the exception
A good man who was a good leader in Seattle
It’s a successful season here when we win 88 games and miss the playoffs
John Stanton won’t authorize a penny over 51%
seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/mariners-placing-…
Loyal company man that got shafted by Seattle by the way they fired him
He lasted 2 years longer than he should have
Heard Brad Hand might be invited to ST…
He’ll forever be known in Seattle as the Mariners manager who ended the playoff drought and helped lead the Mariners to 4 straight winning seasons
to face Yordan Alvarez (who happens to crush lefties) who ended that brief playoff appearance
Adding a great baseball guy to the brain trust
Preller is so good at bringing smart baseball minds into the fold when they are available

former Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais has landed as a special assistant with the San Diego Padres
Dennis Lin of The Athletic had the report on Saturday afternoon:
The San Diego Padres hired Servais as a special assistant for baseball operations and player development
possesses relevant experience for his new role
Former Mariners manager Scott Servais has landed with the Padres: https://t.co/7VQSMQMF0g
and has worked in player development with the Texas Rangers
He was the manager of the Mariners for 9.5 years before being fired this past August as the team was in the midst of a dreadful two-month stretch that saw them go from 10.0 games up in the American League West to out of the playoffs entirely
The M's hired former team catcher Dan Wilson in his place
Servais took the M's to the playoffs in the 2022 season and is the second-winningest manager in team history (after Lou Piniella)
Well regarded as a nice man with a good clubhouse presence about him
Servais could use the Padres job as a springboard to another managerial position later in his career
The Padres are coming off a season in which they finished second in the National League West
They then lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS
the Padres are one of the most dangerous teams in baseball
They are also a favorite for Japanese sensation Roki Sasaki

India and France on Monday signed a key deal to procure 26 naval variants of Rafale fighter jets at a cost of around ₹63,000 crore for the Indian Navy
A French multirole fighter aircraft Rafale takes part in a practice session for a simulated landing on a aircraft carrier at the French Navy airbase of Landivisiau in Saint-Servais.(AFP) India is procuring the jets from French defence major Dassault Aviation for deployment on board aircraft carrier INS Vikrant
The Cabinet Commitee on Security (CCS), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared the government-to-government deal for 22 single-seat Rafale M fighters and four twin-seat trainers this month, Hindustan Times had earlier reported
manufactured by French plane maker Dassault Aviation
is being imported as an interim measure to meet the navy’s urgent requirements until India develops its own twin-engine deck-based fighter
The Rafale M procurement will include weapons
crew training and logistics support for the Indian Navy from the French government
approved the navy’s proposal to buy 26 Rafale M fighters to sharpen its operational capabilities
The fighter jet is known to be a sturdy aircraft and comes with a raft of design features that enhance its survivability in aircraft carrier operations that are demanding and expose deck-based assets to a highly corrosive environment
It has been specifically designed to operate from 40,000-tonne class aircraft carriers
The aircraft is deployed on the French Navy’s Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier
Servais will serve as a special assistant in player development
the 57-year-old manager only made one postseason appearance with the Mariners and was dismissed after the team lost the AL West lead and fell from a 13-game advantage over .500
Servais was just the second manager in Mariners history
he was let go following a 1-8 record on a nine-game road trip that included losses to the Detroit Tigers

Servais brings valuable experience to his new role
The former major league catcher served as the Texas Rangers’ senior director of player development from 2006 to 2011
where he worked alongside current Padres president of baseball operations A.J
He then spent four seasons as an assistant general manager for the Los Angeles Angels
Servais also worked with Padres farm director Ryley Westman and assistant farm director Mike Daly with the Texas Rangers organization
This isn't the first time the Padres have hired a former manager in a less important role
Mike Shildt joined the San Diego Padres as a player development consultant
who took over as the Padres' manager from Bob Melvin last offseason
was given a contract extension through 2027 in November
Servais expressed his desire to continue managing in the future
though his name wasn't connected to any of the managerial openings that came up last fall
This new role in San Diego doesn’t alter his goal of returning to a major league dugout
but it offers him an opportunity to stay involved in the game from a different perspective
had an 11-season MLB career from 1991 to 2001
playing as a catcher for the Houston Astros
Servais will now be the special assistant for baseball operations and player development with the Padres
Former Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais has officially found a new home with the San Diego Padres. According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic
Before coming to Seattle, Servais had experience working in various front-office roles with two other American League franchises
he was the assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Angels
Servais was the senior director of player development with the Texas Rangers
he worked with the current Padres president of baseball operations A.J
Servais was a candidate to manage the Padres before the 2016 season before he ultimately took the Mariners position
Under Servais’ tenure from 2016 to August 2024
Those 680 wins rank second all-time in franchise history for any manager behind Lou Pinella
Servais led the Mariners to a 90-win season
the first time the franchise had reached those heights since 2003
the Mariners made their first postseason berth since the incredible 2001 season
The Mariners defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL Wild Card round before being swept by the eventual World Series champion Houston Astros
A change needed to happen for the Mariners
but Servais’ leadership was paramount to getting the M's back to their status as a competitive ball club in the American League
After being unable to land a managerial job this offseason
Servais lands on his feet with a Padres team looking to build off their 93-69 season under Mike Shildt
We don’t know what the future holds for Servais regarding his managerial career
but his successful tenure with the Mariners should get him opportunities with other ball clubs after 2025

The Seattle Mariners’ stunning collapse has prompted a change in leadership
with the club replacing manager Scott Servais with Dan Wilson
The team also announced Thursday afternoon that they have let go hitting coach Jarret DeHart
“We believe that we need a new voice in the clubhouse,” Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said in a statement
“Dan knows our team and has been a key member of our organization working with players at every level over the past 11 years
He is well respected within and outside of our clubhouse and we are confident he will do a great job in leading our group over the final six weeks of the season and moving forward
“I do want to thank Scott for all his efforts here in Seattle over the past nine seasons”
“He has poured his passion into the team and our community and I know I speak for the entire Mariners organization in thanking him for his hard work.”
The Mariners have turned a 10-game lead in the American League West into a five-game deficit in the standings
jeopardizing what seemed to be a march toward the postseason for a franchise that is still in search of its first pennant
Servais presided over a frustrating situation — the performance of the Mariners’ elite pitching staff has been consistently wasted by a sagging offense that ranks at the bottom of the league by multiple measures

the playoff appearance ended a 21-year postseason drought that at the time had been the longest in North American professional sports
But the Mariners missed the playoffs in 2023 and are now in danger of doing so once again in 2024
Servais released a statement Thursday night
you embraced my family and me and we are forever grateful for your support,” Servais said
I leave with pride in what we’ve accomplished together and excitment for what the future holds.”
He has also filled in as a broadcaster for the team’s ROOT Sports affiliate and was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame in 2012
Justin and the Mariners organization have placed in me” Wilson said in a statement
I believe this team is capable of playing great baseball this season and look forward to the opportunity to work with this group of players and coaches.”
Wilson takes over a club that is 64-64, five games out of a playoff spot, and on a three-game losing streak. The move will place added scrutiny on Jerry Dipoto, who took over as general manager in Sept. 2015. The Mariners begin their next series on Friday versus the San Francisco Giants in Seattle.

As the Reds look to replace Bell, Servais will be looking to get back on his feet and the Reds seem like the perfect opportunity
who covers the Reds for the Cincinnati Enquirer
went as far to suggest Servais as a potential replacement for Bell
Cincinnati, like Seattle, has their superstar in De La Cruz, along with a few other exciting offensive players. The team looks like they have found their ace in former top pick Hunter Greene and they have a few other interesting options to fill out the rotation
The Mariners and Reds have been familiar trade partners over the years
so Servais might be relatively familiar with the team
The NL Central used to be dominated by the Cardinals but has since become a lot more competitive with three different division champions in the last four years
The Brewers were a surprisingly good team this year
while the Cubs were a major disappointment
and the Cardinals are in limbo...and just old
are both full of young talent and look to continue the NL Central carousel in the near future
Scott Servais was able to help end the longest playoff drought when the Mariners clinched a 2022 postseason spot
and he could look to help the Reds make just their second playoff appearance since 2013

Scott Servais is getting a chance to stay in the same time zone
Dennis Lin of The Athletic reported Saturday that the ex-Seattle manager Servais has landed a job with the San Diego Padres
Servais will be a special assistant for baseball operations and player development
The 57-year-old Servais managed the Mariners from 2016-24 and had a respectable overall record of 680-642 (.514). He also led the team in 2022 to their first playoff berth in over two decades. But Seattle decided to part ways with him in August of last season after blowing a 10-game lead atop their division. Servais also learned of his firing in a particularly brutal way

The team announced Thursday that manager Scott Servais has been fired
It also announced that Dan Wilson will replace him as the club's new manager
While Wilson has never managed at any level
he was a catcher for the Mariners during his playing days and was a special assignment coordinator for the team in spring training
This is the next step in a roller-coaster season for the Mariners
They seemed to be cruising toward just their second playoff appearance since 2001 when they built a 10-game lead in the American League West
they are an ugly 1-8 in their last nine games and have fallen to .500 at 64-64
Seattle is now five games behind the Houston Astros in the division and 7.5 games behind the Kansas City Royals for the final AL wild-card spot
so the front office made a move with the hope of inspiring the club down the stretch
Hiring someone with no managerial experience is quite the drastic step
but Wilson will be a familiar name to the team's fanbase
He was a catcher for Seattle from 1994 to 2005 and was a member of some of the franchise's iconic teams that also featured the star power of Ken Griffey Jr.
The Mariners reached three American League Championship Series during Wilson's playing career
although they were unable to take the next step and advance to the World Series
Seattle still does not have a pennant in franchise history but would surely love to restore some of the consistency from those Wilson teams
he slashed .262/.309/.384 with 88 home runs and 508 RBI
He was an All-Star during the 1996 campaign when he finished with career-best totals in home runs (18) and RBI (83)
But playing and managing are two entirely different things
and he will be tasked with improving on Servais' time
Servais was the manager from 2016 until this season and finished with a 680-642 record
While Seattle advanced to the playoffs just once during his tenure
it finished with a winning record in five of his eight full seasons

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners reportedly fired manager Scott Servais on Thursday with the team in the midst a two-month long collapse having blown a 10-game lead in the division and tumbling to the fringes of playoff contention in the American League
The Athletic reported the decision by the Mariners
The report said former catcher Dan Wilson would be taking over
The decision to move on from Servais during his ninth season in charge came on the heels of a disastrous 1-8 road trip that dropped the Mariners back to 64-64 after sitting 13 games over .500 at one point in mid-June
The Mariners trail Houston by five games in the AL West and are 7 1/2 back in the wild-card standings
But nothing in the way Seattle has played since leading the division by 10 games on June 18 has provided optimism there will be a turnaround over the final five weeks of the regular season
Servais arrived in Seattle before the 2016 season
brought on in lockstep with executive vice president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto
Servais was 680-642 during his time with Seattle
going through a significant rebuild midway through his tenure that ultimately made the Mariners competitive but not good enough
For 8.2 innings, everything was going so swimmingly for the Mariners. They got to Astros ace Justin Verlander

Alvarez's walk-off blast gave the Astros a 1-0 lead in the ALDS
It also left many an onlooker wondering if M's manager Scott Servais made the right move putting Ray in the game

It's not as if Ray zipped through his last outing; he lasted just three innings against the Jays
Servais had righties Matt Boyd and Erik Swanson in the bullpen
Swanson was electric in the regular season
He also gave up just three homers in 53.2 innings
That amounts to a .5 home run per nine inning rate
three times better than Ray's rate in 2022 (1.5).
Boyd represented a slightly riskier option — he only totaled 13.1 innings in 2022
giving up just two earned runs in that span

Servais went with Ray, though, a player who had made just two relief appearances since 2014, per The Athletic's Corey Brock
And as the ball soared through the brisk Houston sky
it seemed he immediately came to regret his move
The look on Scott Servais’ face as he watched Yordan Alvarez physically melt that baseball into the upper deck - knowing it was his decision to bring in Robbie Ray that has single-handedly cost the Mariners the game - is something I would spend 10 lifetimes of work to see. pic.twitter.com/dwBxTw4vzW

PT on Friday against the San Francisco Giants
Thursday was one of the most eventful days in recent team history
Nine-year manager Scott Servais was fired after helping lead the the team to its first playoff appearance in 21 years in 2022
a former catcher and team Hall of Famer who was on all four playoff teams prior to Servais' tenure
But Thursday was also a day off for the players
On top of giving the team a day to digest the news that their skipper would no longer be in the clubhouse
it also gave the team a break after a disastrous 1-8 road trip in which they got swept twice
Seattle will begin a six-game homestead against the Giants with the top of the starting rotation lined up
And there will be a couple familiar faces from San Francisco's side of the dugout that will also be on the mound

He bounced back in his latest appearance on Aug
He allowed two earned runs off four hits and fanned five batters in six innings pitched
His start was the only one that the Mariners won during their road trip
Kirby will go against Seattle native and fan-favorite Blake Snell
Snell has been lights out for the Giants since being activated off the IL on July 9
He's rattled off quality starts in seven of his last eight appearances and has four starts with 10 or more strikeouts over that stretch
Seattle will wrap up its series against San Francisco against former Mariners starter Robbie Ray
The former Mariners starter has started five games since being activated off the 60-day IL on July 24
His most recent start was his best of the season
He struck out nine batters and allowed one earned run off three hits in 6.2 innings pitched

There's going to be a lot of potential distractions for the team with Wilson coming in and Servais being let go
But Julio is Rodriguez is nearing a return to the outfield and JP Crawford is reportedly progressing in his return from injury
Seattle has 34 games left in the season and is 5.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West
The Mariners will hope that a favorable start to a homestead and Wilson's addition will give the team the spark it needs for a postseason push

Jacques Servais, S.J., is a Belgian theologian who taught systematic spiritual theology at the Gregorian University and has directed the Casa Balthasar
a school of discernment and formation for young lay Christians
since its foundation in Rome in 1990.He also serves as president of the Lubac-Balthasar-Speyr Association
established by disciples of Henri de Lubac
the Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar and the spiritual writer Adrienne von Speyr under the patronage of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger
Arguably the world’s leading authority on the Ignatian spirituality of Balthasar
he has published various works and articles on the spiritual sources of his thought—in particular St
Recently, Father Servais finished editing a new anthology of von Balthasar’s writings on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius as an aid to people making or giving them, released in the U.S. under the English-language title Hans Urs von Balthasar on the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises: An Anthology. On May 20
Although Hans Urs von Balthasar has enjoyed a resurgence in academic circles
many ordinary Christians and even Catholics going on retreat might not know his name
Who was Balthasar and why should non-theologians care about his writings
he remained director of the publishing house Johannes Verlag
and editor of a “bibliotheca”curated to help Christians living and acting in the secular world
He did not consider his theological writings to be his most important work
his doctoral thesis was in German literature
He distrusted the rationalist approach to knowledge taken up by the theology of his time
His way of handling the subject of theology—the triune God and his revelation to mankind—was more in line with Bonaventure or Pascal
One could perhaps characterize his standpoint in the words of the poet Petrarch to Giovanni Colonna: “Philosophy must become for us nothing but the love of wisdom; God’s wisdom
we must love him in order to become true philosophers.”
Both Henri de Lubac and Karl Rahner considered Balthasar a genius
but his genius was more that of a musician
people often feel surprised to learn that Balthasar spent 21 years as a Jesuit
leaving the Society of Jesus in 1950 only because his work to co-found a secular institute with the lay mystic Adrienne von Speyr diverged from the order’s priorities
In what ways did Balthasar remain a “Jesuit at heart” and great friend of the Society throughout the last 38 years of his life
Balthasar was convinced that the Society of Jesus in our day has received the mission to spread the Ignatian heritage to a secularized modern society and that in order to fulfill this mission
complementary fellowship of lay men and women capable of penetrating into the world like leaven in dough
He envisioned a community of Christians living under vows and acting not so much with the traditional apostolic methods (which seem to become more and more ineffective in our age)
This vision required him to revisit the Ignatian Exercises’ “Call of the Eternal King”—so decisive for traditional
such as that of Francis Xavier—and interpret it in light of a more explicit theology of the cross
In his book The Moment of Christian Witness
Balthasar proposes a criterion clearly measured against the Gospel: “to attempt to shape one’s life into a loving response to the crucified trinitarian love of God and thus to place oneself at the disposal of Jesus’ work of establishing God’s kingdom of love among men.” Ignatius wanted the Jesuits to follow this counsel in all its radicality
But when a Jesuit can no longer personally hold a secular position among his most agnostic contemporaries
this becomes a place a consecrated lay person may occupy — a place of hope for a new kind of fruitfulness
probably more tied with the mystery of Holy Saturday than with Jesus’ public ministry
the Jesuit priest would then be one who kindles among lay people Ignatian missions that ultimately have complete independence from the society
in accordance with the true autonomy of a fully lay vocation
We tend to classify Balthasar as a “mystical theologian,” even describing him as a 20th century Bonaventure who complemented the Canadian Jesuit theologian Bernard Lonergan as a sort of 20th century Aquinas
In what ways does the phrase “mystical theologian” describe Balthasar
Balthasar was certainly not a speculative thinker like Lonergan
He never became a professor or taught in a university faculty
He did teach some short courses sponsored by Catholic groups at Swiss universities and other educational forums
and young German-speaking men interested in cultural education and spiritual life often sought his wisdom and counsel
His attention was not set on systematic theology
In this regard he was more similar to another Jesuit theologian
a musician and poet who was very close to the spirituality of the Carmelites
Adrienne von Speyr played a central role in Balthasar’s life and mission
but I would hesitate to speak simply of Christian “mysticism.” We cannot deny that Adrienne
had extraordinary experiences right there in Balthasar’s presence—experiences that truly do deserve the adjective “mystical.” But he considered them as they should be: a grace given through her to the people of God
in order that they might thereby better live in a vital and hope-filled faith and obey more closely the promptings of the Holy Spirit
Balthasar freely used von Speyr’s insights in unfolding a theory of theological knowledge (his Trilogy)
which he applied not only to Scripture and Tradition
but also to the broad world of ancient and modern culture
How has Balthasar’s reputation among Catholics evolved since he died in 1988
a few days before the ceremony where Pope John Paul II planned to give him the cardinal’s red hat
He was very reluctant to accept an honor Ignatius wanted Jesuits to refuse
Yet he saw in the pope’s gesture an attempt to let his and Adrienne von Speyr’s work be received in the church
all kinds of insults from people afflicted with what he called “a deep-seated anti-Roman attitude within the Catholic Church.” Providentially
he was able to die as the poor priest he wanted to be
You have pitched this book toward people who make and give retreats based on the Spiritual Exercises
Ignatius that guides people through a mystical retreat experience in various forms
What specific contribution do you see Balthasar making in this book to Ignatian retreat directors and retreatants
I would stress the underlying Johannine dimension that Balthasar emphasizes when describing the most fruitful attitude for approaching the Exercises
He interprets the Ignatian way as a method for entering into friendship with the Lord
and for gaining an understanding of God’s will by following in his footsteps
This comes out clearly where Ignatius gives meditations on the life of Jesus from scenes in the Gospel
This anthology’s choice of excerpts offers—or aims to offer—a running gloss on the classic Ignatian text
the book will not only be a service to [spiritual] directees and directors but lead any interested reader to a vivid understanding of Ignatius’s charism and to the main theological insights of the Swiss theologian
who clearly appears here as a disciple of the saint
Pope Francis has asked his fellow Jesuits to share the gift of Ignatian discernment with the whole church, a ministry you practice as director of the Casa Balthasar, a house of discernment in Rome for young people from around the world
what can you say about the challenges young people face today and how Ignatian-Balthasarian tools can help them
contributing to the apprenticeship in discernment Francis asks our society to foster
Balthasar’s book-length interview Test Everything: Hold Fast to What Is Good was addressed primarily to young men and women like those I am responsible for at the Casa Balthasar
Having spent a good deal of time with Balthasar
I was able to learn the skill of discernment from him personally
which revolves primarily around the dramatics of the battle that has been going on from the earliest years of Christian history (“Meditation on the Two Standards”)
The Spiritual Exercises are valuable not primarily for their content
but for their method; not so much for what they give directly
as for what they are able to help produce in man through God’s grace and man’s openness
Nobody can lead an apprenticeship in discernment without first being formed in the practice of the rules himself
It is hard for young people today to make an immutable election
The temptation is to remain in the abstract sphere of intelligence or of bare will
best way to proceed is to discern and desire God’s own concrete
singular plan for us: ut voluntas Dei apud me fiat integer
highlighted this central aspect of the Ignatian method: the search for consonance between God’s utterly free offer of a mission and man’s utterly free acceptance of it
the Exercises also remind us that we are engaged in the human and divine tradition that has brought us to the point where we are
and nobody can lead an apprenticeship in discernment without first being formed in the practice of the rules himself
Pope Francis indeed challenges Jesuits to provide a better personal education
This is in fact the most essential presupposition for a revival of active faith among young people
RELATED STORIES What I learned about prayer from Hans Urs von Balthasar Edward T. Oakes Rahner, Balthasar and High School TheologyRandall S. Rosenberg
what does Balthasar contribute to our understanding of prayer
his main contribution is in leading us toward the right interior attitude
without which prayer easily remains superficial
“Bereitschaft,” which translates to “readiness” but in fact means much more
an American alumnus of the Casa Balthasar discovered the word “disponibility,” which has since fallen into disuse
It comes from “to dispose” and corresponds with Ignatius’ own sense of the verb “disponer,” a putting oneself at disposal
This concept points us to the heart of von Balthasar’s and von Speyr’s understanding of Ignatian “indifference”: the willingness to be drawn in any direction for the greater praise
Disponibility is what characterizes the Christian who allows himself to be formed however God wishes
One could compare disponibility to the attitude of a ballroom dancer moving in perfect rhythm with another who leads
The body remains poised and ready to move in any direction
following the slightest indications from the lead
God always takes the lead in his dealings with us
ready to move in whatever direction God chooses
This notion is likely the antidote to modern culture's emphasis on self-assertion and self-fulfillment
It fleshes out Jesus’ central teaching that to find oneself
one must lose oneself in love—which is the core of true Christian prayer

Every single minute of the 70-minute class should be used that efficiently
IDEA San Antonio Superintendent Rolando Posada said
Centered across the top of the wall above Servais were the public charter network’s tenets — “NO excuses.” “100% Every Day.” “Whatever it takes.” — backing its mission of preparing kids for college
The same messages are displayed in each classroom from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade at IDEA Carver College Prep across the street

“We still wanted to make sure that we’re paying attention to how our schools are doing so that we’re paying attention to how our kids are doing,” said Jodi Moon
director of the Center for Social Measurement and Evaluation
who was part of the Children at Risk research team
Children at Risk ranked 550 schools and determined 133 were high performing
San Antonio ISD’s Young Women’s Leadership Academy topped the lists of both high schools and middle schools and Hoffman Lane Elementary School in Comal ISD was ranked the best elementary school
the nonprofit also ranked “Pace Setters,” schools that were clearly growing before the pandemic hit and are likely future “Gold Ribbon” schools
It also compiled lists of “Top Performers in Racial Equity” to evaluate how schools are serving students of color
Pandemic Proof Schools are those that received A or B grades for three consecutive years with enrollments that are 75 percent or more economically disadvantaged kids
“If schools have been performing consistently and positively for students
then those students are better conditioned to weather what we know is going to be a loss for most children just because of the extreme situation that we’ve been in,” Moon said
about 37 percent of second-graders at Carver Academy are reading at the level they should be
indicating a pandemic-caused learning slide
like just about all schools across the state

On ExpressNews.com: Former IDEA leader wants 150,000 charter students in San Antonio by 2030
Superintendent Posada admits that his high expectations for his teachers are “a little bit on the crazy side.” His teacher retention rate in the 28 schools in San Antonio last year was 82 percent
usually principals and assistant principals
more reflective of a college than traditional elementary school models where one teacher might teach all subjects to the same kids all day
Posada acknowledges he’s able to pay teachers more than many public school districts can
The starting annual salary for a teacher is $54,000
A lot of teacher-driven structure should be found in kindergarten
there’s a gradual release so children drive classroom discussion
By the time the kids make it to Carver College Preparatory
About 90 percent of students stay with the school year over year
That’s not to say the College Preparatory campus isn’t without its own challenges
About 86 percent of students are economically disadvantaged and 15 percent receive special education services
Those students that are behind receive critical intervention services
The first week of each year is reserved for “Culture Camp,” much like student orientation in college
The two schools have their roots in a private academy founded about 20 years ago by Spurs legend David Robinson
the TEA deemed it “improvement required.” Yu turned it around to “met standard” in one year
getting all state distinctions available at the time

He and the two Carver principals have backgrounds in traditional public school districts and they said they can relate to their teachers

Edwin Diaz made his manager pay up on a bet for earning his 50th save
And Mariners manager Scott Servais honored it Tuesday afternoon at Petco Park
getting his hair cut into the same style as his closer
“I’m just happy,” Diaz said
I think he was a little bit scared.”
Servais made the arrangement in early April when Diaz had just three saves on the season
He told his young closer that if he reached 50 saves
he would get the lines shaved into the side of his head that Diaz has been sporting since the beginning of the season
it was pretty much a given that Servais would lose eventually lose the bet
who owns Joel’s VIP Barber Salon in Tacoma
“I told him to be ready for when I get that 50th save because I want you to fly wherever we are to do the haircut to Scott,” Diaz said
The Mariners didn’t allow media in the clubhouse when it was happening — just the club’s social media team
But Diaz live streamed it to his instagram account
“I think he looks good,” Diaz said
“He looks like the best swaggered manager in the league right now.”
Servais bought caps that read: “Electric Eddie’s Barber Shop” for the occasion and was wearing one post haircut in his pre-game media session
The team is also doing a promotion with t-shirts featuring that name for Monday’s game vs
“We had a little bit of fun with it today,” Servais said
“I had no idea how white my scalp is and the gray is just that’s it.”
Diaz felt like Servais’ gray hairs weren’t allowing the true work of Joel to be displayed
“We are trying to put some Just for Men on his head to make it look better,” Diaz said
Servais received a fair amount of feedback in the hours after it went social media viral
“Oh my phone is just blowing up,” he said
We’ve got friends from all over the place.”
Will this force Servais to rethink wagering with his players wear his personal appearance is affected
“I made the comment as (Kyle) Seager as he is looking at me and laughing at me
‘I said Kyle if you go for two homers and 4 for 4 tonight
I will go with the Seager tomorrow,'” Servais said
“But I quickly stopped that because it may happen
