and Bianka Velovic to make a layup during a basketball game in Averill Park on Dec A state lawmaker is proposing to divide public and private high schools into different playoff categories State lawmakers often can’t leave well enough alone They insist on fixing problems that don’t exist For one recent example, I direct your attention to a proposal to divide public and private high schools into different playoff categories. As detailed by the Times Union’s Lucy Hodgman the tired debate over whether private and public schools should compete has been revived by new legislation from Assemblyman Matt Slater Slater and other proponents argue that private schools, sometimes dubbed schools without boundaries have an unfair competitive advantage over their public counterparts That argument falls apart when you learn that about 10% of New York State Public High School Athletic Association members are nonpublic schools and that those schools win about 10% of the association’s state championships But Slater points to the incredible injustice wrought upon the Somers High School varsity football team which won Class A state championships in 2022 the team lost by one point to the Christian Brothers Academy near Syracuse “That’s really what brought it to my attention,” Slater said “Parents over in the town of Somers and the Somers football program said We’re playing a private school for the state championship.' They almost beat them If Somers doesn’t win the state championship every year public schools also won the 10 prior Class A football championships Do private schools sometimes have an advantage but certain private schools have strong reputations in certain sports and attract students who excel in those sports Those schools might even give out scholarships since they charge tuition for most students private schools are by some measure a privileged group They benefit from youth recreation leagues that often serve as feeder programs for the local high school and they are helped by having the great majority of local students arrive at their doors even if those students might prefer to go elsewhere Here’s where I quickly note that this supposed problem could be somewhat addressed by building more school choice into the system and by not forcing students especially from impoverished neighborhoods to attend a school based on the random fact of geography public schools could soften their own borders do charge tuition for out-of-district kids teams face advantages and disadvantages that have nothing to do with whether a school is private or public is a wealthy town with top-notch facilities which gives its teams an edge over poorer public districts So I guess we should also divide playoff groups by income level city kids with access to competitive games at neighborhood courts might have an advantage over kids stuck in suburbia So we should probably divide districts by residential density downstate athletes in sports such as softball benefit from warmer weather and more time outside we must divide districts by geography and annual mean temperature dividing schools into smaller and smaller categories until we have playoff subgroups that consist of only a handful of teams rural district with lake-effect snow and limited access to supermarkets champions Alas, kids aren’t dumb, so the athletes will know their trophies have been devalued, especially since, under Slater’s pending bill nearby private and public schools will keep competing during the regular season and will only duck each other during the playoffs If the East Lathamville Rams baseball team gets slaughtered in a regular season game by a nearby private school but wins the public school state title Maybe we should acknowledge that no competition can be perfectly fair and that life away from high school sports is also unfair Maybe students should understand that sometimes you lose simply because you weren’t the best but there’s something about Slater’s bill that conjures our continued civilizational decline Slater and other lawmakers should let the imaginary ones rest I agree to the use of cookies and similar technologies to serve relevant advertising and improve my service Pay to read The Race without adverts or cookies used for personalised ads By logging in, you agree to our use of third-party and analytics cookies to enhance your experience and improve our services. Max Verstappen has dismissed “silly” speculation that becoming a father could slow him down as a Formula 1 driver, as his Miami Grand Prix pole means “we can throw that out of the window”. Verstappen’s partner Kelly Piquet gave birth to their daughter Lily earlier this week. Staying at home to be present meant Verstappen missed the first day of media activities in Miami but arrived in time to be at the track on Friday. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Max Verstappen (@maxverstappen1) The news triggered several lines of questioning to drivers and team personnel over the course of Thursday and Friday about whether it could impact Verstappen as a driver. Verstappen clearly noticed that and rejected the notion after qualifying quickest in Miami on Saturday, while answering a question about how this week has been for him. “It’s been good to be able to spend a few days at home before coming here,” Verstappen said. “When she’s just born, you want to make sure everything is OK. “Clearly it didn't make me slower as well, being a dad, so that’s a positive, we can throw that out of the window for people mentioning it. “And when I was here, I am in contact a lot with my girlfriend anyway throughout the day, getting pictures and Facetime a bit here and there - it’s always there but now, one more member in the family.” Although Verstappen was aware that this had been a talking point in the paddock, he said “I don’t really listen to these kinds of silly things” and just wanted to dismiss it. “I just do my thing,” he said. “I think there are enough racing drivers in the past that have been world champions after having kids. “Honestly I don’t even know where that comes from.” Verstappen’s rival and friend Lando Norris, who said “Max did a Max lap once again and I cannot fault him” after claiming pole ahead of Norris by 0.065s, joked that “I was hoping becoming a dad would slow Max down but it clearly didn’t!”. Nico Hulkenberg, the only other active driver who is a father, had also dismissed the notion on Thursday: “I don't feel that's the case. "I feel once we step in the car – visor down, go out – even for me, I tend to forget what goes on outside because we're just so focused and so driven to perform and maximise. “I just feel it's added benefit because it’s giving me so much outside of work and outside of being in Formula 1. “I would even say it’s kind of been helpful for me, if anything.” Several other drivers and paddock figures have only spoken warmly about Verstappen’s news. Lewis Hamilton said “I just wish him all the best, it's such an amazing, special thing” having spoken to Verstappen at the previous race in Saudi Arabia and seen “how excited he was”. George Russell said: “As Nico says, I think for many people it probably brings things to your life. I know what it's like when I see my nieces and nephews – they're not my kids, but they bring me so much joy when I spend time with them. “And you've seen drivers in the past win championships and races who’ve got kids, so I don't see it changing anything on his professional level.” Verstappen’s team boss Christian Horner pointed out that while it will make home life different for Verstappen, he has already been increasingly family-focused as Piquet has a daughter already, Penelope, who Verstappen has a very good relationship with. Asked if it would likely impact Verstappen in the car, Horner said: “I don’t think so. He’s just very measured. He enjoys family life and for him it’s business as usual. “He’s proud, of course. It's a great thing for him and Kelly to welcome a baby girl, it's great for him and for his family. “He’s going to be a very present father, I’m sure. You’ve got to get involved with the nappies, in the middle of the night, all of that. “It’s the most wonderful thing, welcoming a new addition to any family. Life will be very different for him now, in many respects, as a parent. “But I’m just thinking – the genes of that child are quite incredible. When you think of Verstappen and Piquet – if it was a racehorse, it’d be worth a fortune! “But it’s going to make life a little different for him.” Please accept marketing cookies to enable YouTube videos. cannabis brand was officially recognized among New York’s Top 150 cannabis brands a meaningful achievement in a landscape still defining its identity This recognition highlights how grassroots small-batch producers are not only surviving but thriving as they carve out their space in one of the most closely watched cannabis markets in the country Read the full OCM Market Report here: 2024 OCM Market Report (PDF) The report, available via the Office of Cannabis Management It delivers a blueprint for how New York aims to distinguish itself from the corporate-heavy cannabis models seen in states like California and Colorado the report emphasizes the crucial role that independent brands and equity licensees are playing in shaping the industry the OCM gave spotlight to brands that have excelled in both consumer traction and product quality—and Silly Nice made the list Silly Nice didn’t rise to the top through massive funding rounds or aggressive national rollouts and an unwavering commitment to product integrity With products available in over 100 licensed dispensaries across New York Silly Nice has quickly become synonymous with potent Their Diamond-Frosted & Live Resin Infused Flower remains one of the most talked-about products in the state boasting 47.75% THC and handcrafted with premium Papaya Wine flower The brand has captured a growing base of loyal consumers and budtenders alike—proving that authenticity and craftsmanship resonate deeply with New York weed lovers The report’s data shows a notable shift in consumer behavior craft products instead of settling for mass-market offerings from large multi-state operators (MSOs) small brands that emphasize full-spectrum experiences and elevated terpene profiles are gaining traction much faster than expected Silly Nice checks all these boxes and more The brand’s approach—focusing on fewer SKUs executed at the highest level—has helped it outperform better-funded competitors and growing demand across boroughs and beyond One of the central themes of the 2024 report is the need to protect and uplift the backbone of the market: equity licensees The inclusion of Silly Nice is a validation of the state’s push to champion smaller community-driven ventures over the cookie-cutter approach seen in more corporate-dominated states lies in allowing shelf space and market power to become concentrated in the hands of MSOs and consumers to make intentional choices about who they support Being named one of New York’s Top 150 brands is more than a headline This recognition also underscores the importance of data transparency and OCM-led accountability in helping level the playing field With dispensaries opening at a faster pace and consumer education improving The 2024 OCM opening the market to small businesses and social equity licensees Silly Nice is part of this new wave of grassroots cannabis companies that are defining quality not by corporate margins but by consumer satisfaction and cultural relevance consumer loyalty in New York leans heavily toward brands that are transparent these qualities aren’t buzzwords—they’re foundational principles The OCM provenance Infused pre-rolls and potent concentrates have grown sharply in popularity driven in part by more informed and experienced consumers whose infused flower clocks in at over 47% THC delivers exactly what this evolving market is asking for: clean heady highs with no compromise on flavor or burn quality The report doesn’t shy away from highlighting the risks ahead It explicitly mentions the need to safeguard the integrity of New York’s cannabis market by resisting the influx of large corporate-owned multi-state operators who often undercut pricing Silly Nice’s inclusion in the Top 150 is a clear example of what New York has to gain by nurturing homegrown brands Their success reflects not just smart business but a deep understanding of New York consumers many of whom have long histories with legacy weed culture and value authenticity OCM’s transparency is a breath of fresh air Making market data publicly available allows stakeholders to build better businesses and advocate for a healthier cannabis economy The 2024 report is not just a snapshot; it’s a tool One that levels the playing field and brings accountability to an industry that often lacks it it also provides insight into how their dollars shape the future of weed in New York Supporting independent brands like Silly Nice is a direct way to help maintain diversity As more dispensaries open and operators find their footing the state’s cannabis ecosystem is maturing quickly and consumer trust must remain front and center The OCM’s 2024 Cannabis Market Report suggests that these values are not just Ravindra Jadeja took the "catch" in front of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) dugout Until Chahal stopped them in their tracks with his crafty legspin which precipitated a collapse that saw CSK lose their last five wickets for six runs in the space of seven balls After Dhoni had hit that six off the first legal ball of the over ESPNcricinfo's forecaster projected a total of 203 When Chahal came onto bowl that over, the odds were stacked against him. He had bowled just two overs until that point, with Sam Curran having dumped him out of the attack with a brace of fours and a six The dew was setting in; eight members of the groundstaff had just gone out Chahal also had to contend with just four men outside the circle CSK's spin basher Shivam Dube was at the crease. When the two teams had met in New Chandigarh in early April Dube's presence kept Chahal away from the attack until his dismissal in the 16th over He beat all the odds and changed the game in just one over deathly silence in the stands when Chahal completed his hat-trick and slipped into his meme-inspired signature pose After an advancing Dhoni had lofted a middle-stump ball over long-on Chahal shifted his line wide of off and had the CSK captain holing out to long-off Chahal's wide lines and cunning pace variations played a big role in the hat-trick that came later in the over as well Yuzvendra Chahal slips into his meme position completing taking his hat-trick Getty Images"It felt good," Chahal said of his hat-trick at the break between innings "It was the 19th over and Mahi [Dhoni] bhai [was there] so I was just ensuring the batters don't get settled It's for these wicket-taking skills and smarts that Punjab Kings (PBKS) outlaid INR 18 crore for him at the mega auction last November "Well, it didn't look like he was going to take 4 for 30 today - did it - at one stage? Two overs for 30 [23], and then he comes on for the hat-trick and four wickets in an over," PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting said at his post-match press conference that actually put the brakes right on them [CSK] They could have got away and got sort of 220 or 210 at the end there they start to form the backbone of a nice-looking team and he will be more of a part of that as the tournament goes on We're not exactly sure what sort of surface we'll get there it hasn't been a wicket that's aided spin a lot but when you've got a quality legspinner like him it doesn't matter what surface you play on." Chahal has the knack of taking wickets in clusters This was the second time he had picked up four wickets in an over in the IPL Only two other bowlers have achieved this feat he has taken two or more wickets in an over 18 times in the IPL play2:10Is CSK losing five times at home IPL's biggest shocker?Jaffer and Ganga talk about Iyer's innings Chahal had missed the 2021 T20 World Cup because the selectors wanted another spinner who could "deliver with more speed" But that hasn't deterred Chahal from tossing the ball up in the mid-70kph range and hiding it away from the swinging arc of six-hungry batters but his control over his pace and line variations sets him apart He can even push his pace up to 90kph and keep batters guessing CSK's guesses were all wrong in the 19th over and Chahal made them look very silly When it comes to elevating the everyday cannabis ritual in New York few products are making waves quite like Silly Nice’s 1G Bubble Hash As the legal weed scene continues to flourish across the Empire State discerning smokers are moving beyond flower alone—and turning to high-quality concentrates that bring depth Crafted using a precise ice-water extraction method Silly Nice’s 1G Bubble Hash isn’t just potent—it’s pure Testing at 52.10% THC and 61.93% total cannabinoids this full-spectrum hash offers a well-rounded terpene-rich experience that enhances any joint Silly Nice’s Bubble Hash is changing the way New Yorkers get high Bubble Hash is a solventless concentrate made by using ice water to separate trichome heads from cannabis flower Silly Nice elevates that traditional method by using premium input flower and meticulous processing to preserve maximum potency and flavor resinous hash that crumbles perfectly into joints and bowls delivering a stronger and cleaner hit than flower alone But this isn’t just about potency—it’s about the full experience The natural terpene profile is preserved throughout the process aromatic smoke that’s smooth on the throat and heavy on flavor From earthy undertones to subtle citrus notes smokers are upgrading their sessions by adding Bubble Hash to their favorite rolls and packs Whether you’re crafting a hand-rolled joint in Queens or enhancing a blunt before a night out in Manhattan a sprinkle of Bubble Hash takes things up a notch Its malleable texture makes it easy to break apart and distribute evenly helping you stretch your flower further while intensifying the overall high It’s not just about recreational buzz either—full-spectrum concentrates like Silly Nice Bubble Hash are often preferred by medical patients for their balance of cannabinoids and terpenes offering more therapeutic effects without synthetic additives or solvents One of the standout features of this product is its flexibility Silly Nice Bubble Hash works beautifully across a range of consumption methods Add a pinch of hash on top of your flower for a smooth slow burn that lasts longer and hits harder Fans of dabbing and vaporizing will also find that the hash melts cleanly offering a terpene-rich cloud with a mellow yet intense onset one thing is consistent—Silly Nice Bubble Hash delivers a robust and full-spectrum experience that reflects the brand’s commitment to quality With over 50% THC and nearly 62% total cannabinoids, this is not your average hash. The film revisits the infamous Saturday Night Live character ‘Pat’ from the 1990s, a punchline based entirely on gender ambiguity It reflects on the legacy of that character and what it means for today’s trans comedians But don’t get it twisted: Roz isn’t setting out to be anyone’s role model silly b***h who loves to talk about sex and make fun of stuff,” she laughs And her paranormal side hustle is still very much alive. On Ghosted Roz has interviewed the likes of Kritsen Stewart, TS Madison, Bob The Drag Queen, Margaret Cho and Sasha Colby “You don’t have to believe in ghosts to enjoy it community and camp.” Meanwhile The Haunted Doll gives ghost hunting a queer lens an allegedly haunted hotel and some spooky happenings While Roz is often communicating with the dead Roz Hernandez does Comedy in a Gay Bar runs until August. But maybe none more so than Hunter, Sanders and No. 1 pick Cam Ward NFL analyst Brad Gagnon had one word to describe the Browns' draft experience “Extreme,” Gagnon wrote “This draft will be defined by how two former Colorado teammates pan out If Travis Hunter excels and Shedeur Sanders does not The Browns look like geniuses for trading out of the No 2 spot (where Hunter went) and safely gambling on Sanders in Round 5.  "Few other factors are likely to make a difference unless Mason Graham really blows up or goes bust in a major way.” as the success of the draft hinges on those players selected But to say the whole draft class hinges on a fifth-round selection at quarterback seems far-fetched.  I'd grade this more on how Graham and second-round pick perform early in their careers and how quickly running back Quinshon Judkins just for our kinSave on the litter with color-changing tech that helps you better care for your cat “It’s a way of entering into the animal’s perspective or experience, into their world,” explains Dr. Robert Mitchellopens in a new tab foundation professor of animal studies and psychology at Eastern Kentucky University Beyond an attempt to flesh out your pet’s inner life giving them a voice can also be a harmless way to entertain yourself like you’re simultaneously writing and watching a talking-dog feature we grew up on cartoons and movies like Homeward Bound maybe the fantasy imprinted on us.) authors’ new research “proving” that the world would be $28 trillion richer today but for carbon emissions from fossil fuels over a 30-year period Ignoring the emissions from developing countries which today accounts for one-third of all energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions the authors focus instead on oil companies which they call the “carbon majors” – especially Saudi Aramco according to the authors Chevron has caused an estimated $2 trillion in damages Exxon Mobil is right behind at $1.9 trillion Saudi Aramco and Gazprom are each responsible for $2 trillion in damages which greatly exceed these companies’ market values While the authors may consider such an outcome a “win,” bankrupting these companies would not change the physical and economic realities that the world depends on fossil fuels and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future it is not clear who would levy the fines and who would receive the monies received – other than trial lawyers.) The approach used by these authors is a form of “attribution science,” which attempts to link specific weather-related events to GHG emissions. That approach, which was first developed about two decades ago to attribute a 2003 European heat wave to climate change is statistical legerdemain that depends on counterfactual models the authors acknowledge the benefits of fossil fuels stating that “fossil fuels have also produced immense prosperity.” Yet they purposefully ignore those benefits because “these companies have already been handsomely paid.” This latter statement reveals further economic ignorance The benefits of fossil fuels to modern society are probably incalculable but they far exceed the profits these companies have made and far exceed the damage estimates the authors calculate The authors claim that fossil fuel damages are what economists call an “externality” and that “Courts may need to consider how the benefits of energy use are balanced against its externalities and the potential duty of care these companies have to the public.” (They also raise the discredited claim that oil companies “knew” about climate change and hid the evidence from the public.) Externalities are a real phenomenon of energy development and use But in this case the externalities are unobservable and instead estimated based on theoretical models having little accuracy levying penalties to “internalize” an externality that would cause far greater economic losses is unjustified this article is simply an advocacy piece for specious lawsuits against oil companies with deep financial pockets Nature should be ashamed of itself for publishing it Jonathan Lesser is a Senior Fellow with the National Center for Energy Analytics.
