the one-room Hotel Casanus is a giant intestinal model that allows guests to spend a cozy night inside a massive colon
Resting in the Verbeke Foundation Art Park near Antwerp
the cozy anatomical model was the work of Dutch designer Joep van Lieshout
curved interior of the furnished anus features a double bed
The exterior of the room is sculpted with bulging veins and a giant puckered sphincter (non-functional) on one end
and painted the visceral red of exposed organs
The colossal muscle tube almost seems out of place in the idyllic art park
visitors still flock to the site to spend the night in the big colon which is also surrounded by such wondrous sites as black swans and an unobstructed view of the night sky
Hotel Casanus is somewhere between theme bed and breakfast and gross-out stunt tourism
Breakfast and access to the museum are included in the price

A Latvian collaborator kicks the bodies of Jewish women and children into a ditch after their execution
Update (October 2022): The Zedelgem monument was removed in June 2022. See coverage in Het Nieuwsblad (Google translation here)

Zedelgem — Update: This monument was removed in June 2022
A monument to the Waffen-SS in the middle of Western Europe
The Legion was composed of the 15th Waffen Grenadier (1st Latvian) and the 19th Waffen Grenadier (2nd Latvian) divisions of the SS. The Anti-Defamation League shows the 15th Division’s insignia as an example of hate signs used by neo-Nazis
Today, Latvia itself hosts annual marches celebrating Latvian Legionnaires
where hundreds of SS veterans are cheered as heroes
now has a monument celebrating the Waffen-SS

Verschaeve’s defenders often claim he’s being honored as a poet and author, not a Nazi collaborator. It’s a common tactic used to whitewash collaborators with literary backgrounds. A good response to this came from Herman van Goethem, historian and rector of the University of Antwerp. “Cyriel Verschaeve – writer. That is correct,” van Goethem quipped
Thanks to the efforts of historians like van Goethem and Koen Aerts as well as activists, six Belgian towns have renamed their Verschaeve streets over the past five years. That’s a rare trend, considering nearly everywhere else, monuments to collaborators are on the rise. Verschaeve’s only other honor is a plaque on his birth house in Ardooie which says nothing about his Nazi past

we have seen an alarming increase in invasive non-native crayfish in recent years
including the infamous marble crayfish and the red American crayfish
are a serious threat to our aquatic ecosystems
Their behaviour leads directly and indirectly to loss of biodiversity
degradation of water quality and damage to banks and dykes
we need more information on the species present and their distribution
which is why we need the help of citizen scientists
Would you like to actively contribute to INBO research on invasive alien crayfish
And do you have half an hour of your time for 5 consecutive days between 15 June and 15 October
the citizen science project mapping the current distribution of these exotic crayfish in Flanders

has launched its first Comenius project together with five other schools from Scotland
The new project is entitled "Developing Health and Welfare Education in the European Primary School"
The aim of this project is to instil awareness about the practical and different issues reflecting students' and teachers' everyday lives - health and welfare education in European countries
Our first task was to prepare a presentation on the national and local structure of the educational system
together with our school structure and main teaching methods
All our schoolchildren are involved in this project
A few students sent e-mails to their counterparts directly from their school e-mail accounts
This was done from the school's computer laboratory
Others sent various greeting cards and letters by post with the help of their class teacher
The enthusiasm was great and the children's faces spoke for themselves
A group of 14 - mostly head teachers and teachers from the six schools - met at Toermalyn Primary School in Stekene
Most of us already knew each other from the preparatory visit which was held the year before
a lot of work has been done by the partner schools
gave us a warm welcome and introduced us to most of the school staff
It was also a joy to see and hear the Belgian children happily singing and dancing to welcome us
We were also welcomed by the nursery school-children
second and third classes of the primary school
Here we could observe and discuss with the teachers the various teaching methods used
We also observed children in the playground
entering their classroom and during their lunchtime break
It was a great experience to see how other countries run their daily classroom lives without being stressful
After the class visits we usually discussed the project
Everyone had the chance to speak about their school methods and following a lengthy discussion
each country representative delivered a presentation on the national and local structure of the educational system
Present were members from the Belgian Education Department
parents and teachers from Toermalyn School
The children of the fourth classes welcomed us by singing It's a small world and by giving us some of their delicious Belgian chocolate
we discussed how we were going to pass on information to each other about staff and the children's healthy diary
We also decided to set up a school Website with links to each partner school to foster good communication
Other activities were planned for the coming three years
We were also invited by the mayor at Stekene City Hall
After a warm welcome and a long chat about our countries we had a delicious Flemish dinner typically known as breughel-meal
An excellent relationship developed between us and for some of us it was very hard to say goodbye
We all look forward to another project meeting in May
This was an excellent opportunity for our children to feel closer to and learn from other European children
We thank the Socrates National Agency for its financial support
Mr Ferket for his kind hospitality and support towards the delegation
the teachers at our school who are actively involved in the project
and also all the parents for their excellent work
