1944 he spent much of his childhood in the mountains in beautiful Mountain Park
He cherished that time of life when he and his friends ran freely and safely through the hills and the community until dark
Playing ball or hockey consumed his days and evenings
We loved hearing his stories of playing hockey on the outdoor rink with moose or deer climbing the snowbank to watch
Gary and his family later moved to Edmonton where he continued his schooling
attending NAIT and graduating in Business Administration
his beloved soulmate who became his wife and his partner
A few years later he became the happy Dad of two daughters
Laurel “Lolo” (Chris) and Lindsey “Linny” (Jason)
He was so proud of them as children and even prouder when they became successful adults
a new chapter of fun and pride of his family unfolded...and of course
more nicknames… “Papaya” (Maya)
“The Rubenator” (Ruben) and “McGasha” (Sasha)
Gary took a genuine interest in the people he met
quirkiness and kick ass humour endeared him to many
His family is so thankful for the fun person he was but also thankful for all the other sides of Gary
He believed in all of us and stressed the importance of persevering through life’s highs and lows
and all those who had the privilege of having Gary in their company whether it was for a few seconds
I think we could all agree that Gary always left too soon
we simply could not get enough of his company
we find it quite fitting when we say we all wish he would have stuck around a little bit longer..
A Celebration of Life will be held in Gary’s honour at the Lacombe Golf and Country Club in Lacombe
All are welcome to join friends and family in honouring his exceptional life
the family has requested donations be made to MS Canada

and Hermann Stene’s latest Real pro graphic is a perfect example of that connection
His new board proudly features original artwork created by his mom
"That moment your Mom’s artwork is your new pro graphic," Real mentioned in the caption. "Brought to you by Hermann & Inger Stene, Hermann’s ‘A Thousand Suns’ [graphic] is now available at local skate shops, including Inger’s (Hermann's mother) in Larvik, Norway, Mammas Skate Shop."
The fact that Hermann's mom has a skate shop in Norway made this already incredible collaboration that much cooler.
add the fact that Real tacked on the ultimate teaser at the end of the post: "And stay tuned for a new video part from Hermann dropping soon!" and yeah
there's a lot to be stoked on here.
the attention to detail is insane and at first glance
you're going to have to buy two—toss one on the wall (it is art
Especially if you're a fan of Real's 'True Fit' shape.
I'm also a huge fan of Hermann's skating and can't wait to see what he brings to the table this year
Hit your local shop and get your hands on one before they're gone.

A new school has made its way to Joliet and it's housed in a familiar spot
The balcony at Joliet Christian Church is an add-on and some of the original pews are still used
Membership has gone down through the years, so it was decided to give the church building over to the Yellowstone Classical Christian Academy
has been a music teacher for almost 50 years and music will be a key part of the curriculum at the new school set to open on Sept
“We will be singing every day,” Stene Raines said
“Music is a big part of a classical education.”
The Christian school will operate under a classical curriculum model
used by many faith-based schools across the country
Stene Raines has been looked at the Herzog Foundation and the Baldwin Christian School in Wisconsin
Joliet students will learn Latin and study classic literature with a focus on developing skills with a approach using grammar
“We believe everyone has the potential to be able to think and to discern on their own,” Stene Raines said
We're raising people that can think and be great members of their community.”
The building itself is a fitting setting. The Victorian style church is on the National Register of Historic Places
Stene Raines and her school board recently received the deed and the keys to the church
“Over 100 years worth of people coming to this church,” said Rick Bischoff
wanted to honor that history and that memory already.”
Families in Carbon County are showing interest in the school is expecting around 30 students initially for kindergarten through fourth grade
“The Christian aspect is probably the main focus for our family along with the classical,” said Danielle Hall
Hall currently homeschools her second-grade daughter but plans to enroll her here
“The rhetorical side of things that teaches these kids more of how to think and problem solve rather than what to think and problem solve,” Hall said about what she likes about classical education
that excite music teacher Virginia Stene Rain who is already giving her first lessons on the piano
which has been at the church first started
“With the acoustics in the room as beautiful as they are
The church is now set to be a school but one still connected to its roots
“Wednesday is chapel day,” Stene Raines said
And it begins its next chapter as a place for both prayer and now Christian education
we've been here for over 40 years,” Bischoff said
Bischoff says many other families also have a long connection with Joliet church
He says it was difficult decision and sad to have to close it
but the school is they're happy the school will use the building
"It's kind of like the Phoenix from the ashes to see the possibility of the ministries that started in this church to continue," Bischoff said

Authorities have now formally filed charges against a man accused of setting a fire in Chisago County last weekend that left a man dead and a woman severely injured
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday that 69-year-old Charles Alvin Stene died from complications of injuries he received during the June 4 fire
His death has been classified as a homicide
Stene died on Sunday afternoon at Hennepin County Medical Center
was taken to Regions Hospital for severe injuries
A criminal complaint filed Thursday only identifies her as A.C.N.
and says she suffered injuries “consistent with third-degree burns.”
As previously reported by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, deputies were called to the 400 block of Cambridge Drive in Fish Lake Township around 3:30 a.m
Sunday for a fire that was reported as being intentionally set
and both of them had significant burn injuries
of Albertville has been charged with one count of second-degree unintentional murder and one count of first-degree assault causing great bodily harm for allegedly setting the fire
A criminal complaint states Stene told deputies at the scene that he had been sleeping
and claimed he heard Evenstad come into the room
the complaint states Stene had no hair left on his head due to the fire and had severe burns
doctors noted the burns were on 80-90% of Stene’s body
Stene’s daughter said she had been threatened by Evenstad previously
The document says another man identified in the complaint by the initials of M.N
told Crosby police that Evenstad came to his house around 5 a.m
That’s when Evenstad asked if he could crash on M.N.’s couch “for a while.” He added that Evenstad wasn’t wearing a shirt at the time
Evenstad was arrested for charges of receiving stolen property out of Crow Wing County after a deputy there found a vehicle that was reported stolen from Waite Park outside of the apartment Evenstad was at
deputies found a lighter as well as a shirt that smelled like gasoline
told police she knew Evenstad had threatened Stene’s daughter previously
She also stated that when the fire was being set
she asked out loud if someone was dumping gas on her and claims Evenstad flicked a lighter before running out of the room
She then drove to a neighbor’s house for help
His next court date is currently scheduled for June 22
Evenstad could face up to 60 years in prison and a $30,000 fine

John Stene demonstrates how Travis Carothers pointed a gun at his head before Stene shot Carothers to death in this frame grab from a video taken during Stene's interview by Mesa County Sheriff's Office investigators
Travis Carothers died of gunshot wounds on June 17 after an altercation with John Stene
Authorities determined the shooting was self-defense
Mesa County prosecutors will not file murder charges against the man who killed 36-year-old Travis Carothers last month
based on evidence that the shooter was acting in self-defense during an armed robbery attempt
Citing an interview that shooting suspect John Daniel Stene
gave law enforcement as well as physical evidence collected at the crime scene and through Carothers' autopsy
Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein said prosecutors believe they wouldn't be able to prove to a jury that Stene was not acting in self-defense when he fatally shot Carothers in the 2900 block of N
he's going to convince the jury he is," Rubinstein said
"There is no way we can disprove self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt."
Deputies who responded to a shooting report on N
View Drive several minutes after 10:30 p.m
June 17 found Carothers on the ground with gunshot wounds
according to a memorandum of the incident to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office released by the Mesa County District Attorney's office that outlines the investigation
Carothers was "conscious and breathing and moaning" but unable to answer when deputies asked who had shot him
A neighbor told deputies that when he heard shots and came to help
he saw a gun under Carothers and moved it onto the hood of a nearby car
The .22 caliber pistol was loaded with six live rounds
He was arrested three days later near the Cameo exit off Interstate 70
Chief Deputy District Attorney Mark Hand said in an interview that law enforcement was able to track Stene in part because he continued to charge his court-ordered ankle monitor while on the run
He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder
Stene agreed to give an interview to investigators without the promise of immunity
Stene said he shot a man he didn't recognize who was robbing him at gunpoint
Stene said he had been visiting a woman who lived on N
who was also interviewed by law enforcement
both said they spoke about Stene selling his 1997 Honda Accord
While the two men's versions of the conversation had small discrepancies
they both told deputies they discussed buying or selling drugs and assault-style weapons
Stene said that while the two men were talking
"He said Justin Edwards observed the money," Rubinstein wrote in the report
adding that the two men parted ways after Stene said he needed to obtain the Honda's title before he sold the car to Edwards
Edwards told deputies he intended to buy the car for Carothers
who was getting ready to move to Texas for a job
Stene and Edwards both told investigators that Edwards intended to buy the Honda
but said he needed to drop his son off somewhere first
"Edwards reported that he told Travis Carothers about John Stene trying to sell him his car and also that John Stene claimed to be able to get a half-pound of methamphetamine for $1,500," the report said
Edwards said Carothers told him Stene owed Carothers money for marijuana
"Justin Edwards said he told Travis Carothers he could probably go get the money from (Stene) while he was there," the report said
"He said that he warned Travis Carothers that John Stene said he had a gun he was trying to sell."
Edwards told law enforcement that Carothers told him he wasn't worried about Stene having a gun
investigators who searched his phone found a string of texts they believe Edwards initiated around the time he saw cash in Stene's pocket
"If you got any kind of balls I got something for you," said a message from Edwards' phone near 4 p.m
Stene told law enforcement he waited around at his friend's house for Edwards to get back from dropping off his son
He said he was sitting in the driver's seat
reaching for his keys when the driver's side door opened and a pistol was pressed against his head
Stene said he didn't recognize his assailant
who was wearing a mask with a skull over his face
'Just be very quiet,'" Stene recalled during the recorded interview with law enforcement released by the District Attorney's Office
Stene said as his assailant alternately held the gun to his head and his side
he reached between his seat and shifter for his own pistol
he put it back toward my head and that's when I felt like I was going to die
I felt like this is my only chance," Stene can be heard explaining tearfully
"So I picked up my pistol and I shot him."
Rubinstein noted in his memorandum an autopsy that described two rounds hitting Carothers
He said the angle and apparent proximity of the two gunshot wounds appear to back up Stene's story
Deputies also found a tube mask with a skull on it wrapped in Carothers' T-shirt found on scene
"It is believed at this time there is no information that directly contradicts what is described in this summary," Rubinstein wrote
"The fact that (Stene's) recount of events actually occurred … is corroborated by the existence of (the) face mask described
the text messages which appear to give explanation for how Travis Carothers knew of the situation
and the number and angle of the bullet trajectories which corroborates the body positioning of Travis Carothers leaning into the vehicle of John Stene."
Rubinstein wrote Stene believed he was in "imminent danger of being killed."
I find that the shooting was a lawful act under Colorado law," he wrote
he doesn't believe law enforcement erred in arresting Stene
law enforcement certainly had probable cause that he was responsible for the shooting," Rubinstein said
Hand said investigators knew from early on that self-defense might have been an issue
"If you get a person who was shot and he has a gun laying next to his body
I have self-defense chiming in my head just from the very second I'm looking at it," Hand said
Defense attorney Steve Laiche — who Rubinstein said agreed early on to have his client give an interview to law enforcement — said Wednesday he thought the decision not to file murder charges was "totally justified."
It would have been a hard case for them to prove especially when they found Mr

Archaeologists in Norway unearthed dozens of tiny gold-foil figures at a former pagan temple
Archaeologists have discovered 35 miniature gold-foil depictions of Norse gods tucked inside the remnants of a pagan temple in Norway
The foils may have been used as sacrificial offerings
so it's unlikely that they were worn as jewelry
The first gold foils were discovered in Scandinavia in 1725 and were eventually labeled as "gullglubber," which translates to "golden old men."
"This is a very special find," Kathrine Stene
the archaeologist who led the excavation this summer
"Each foil is quite small and measures about the size of a fingernail."
Several of the roughly three dozen gold foils were packed inside postholes that once contained support beams for the building in Hov
while others were found where the structure's walls once stood.
Archaeologists originally discovered the small building back in 1993 along with two gold foils
Additional excavations in the 2000s revealed 28 more gold pieces

Although similar foils have been found in Norway and across Scandinavia — including in similar pagan buildings in Bornholm
Sweden — this is the first time that archaeologists have discovered the foils in a smaller structure
an archaeologist at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo
"Either through excavation or with metal detectors
more could pop up in various places in Norway as well."
archaeologists discovered 30 similar foils elsewhere in Hov
"Normally we find these in special buildings that were once used for religious purposes," Stene said
"We were surprised to find them in such a small building."
researchers could measure the structure's footprint and determined that it was roughly 49 feet (15 meters) in length
most homes during that time period were between 66 and 98 feet (20 to 30 m) long

—Viking sword from warrior's grave unearthed in family's yard in Norway
There's been some speculation about how the foils got there
While some researchers have suggested the gold pieces were used as an admission fee to enter the building
Stene said it's more likely that the foils were placed there during construction
"Based on where we found them where the walls once stood and inside the postholes
they couldn't have been used as tickets to enter into the building," Stene said
"It's more likely that they were used as more of a sacrifice so that this special building would have a good life
"We're happy that we found them," she added
"This was considered a sacred place to pagans."

Boredom during the COVID-19 pandemic launched a new opportunity for one Lake Mills teenager.
Anna Stene, daughter of Andy and Kendra Stene, is 16 years old and is going into her sophomore year of high school.
Anna said she made a coloring book inspired by her interest while she was bored.
“I like the outdoors and I was bored during COVID so I started drawing stuff,” Anna said.
She drew things she was interested in and said the drawings just came together.
“There are tree houses, outside activities and campers,” Anna said.
“It’s all nature based,” her mom added.
The teenager said it was her mom that sparked the idea for the coloring book.
“I have always liked art and I really like painting,” Anna said.
“Her father’s family is all very artistic — that’s who she gets it from,” Kendra Stene said.
The book includes 11 coloring pages put together with a spiral binding, which makes it easier to use, along with a plastic cover and a cardstock back page, the mom said.
She said if people are interested in ordering one, they can send her a message on Facebook at Kendra Stene.
The teen’s coloring books are also helping raise money for the Humane Society of Northern Iowa, and for each book sold, $2 is donated to the organization.
Though they started the book as something fun to do, Anna said right now they don’t have any other plans with it, and art remains a hobby.
“We just started this as a fun thing but a lot of people have been interested in it,” Kendra Stene. “It’s a children’s coloring book because of how big the drawings are, but we’ve had some adults order them for themselves.”

Former TRISTANIA singer Vibeke Stene has teamed up with ex-BORKNAGAR drummer Asgeir Mickelson in a new doom metal band
is set to be released on CD and vinyl through Crime Records this coming fall
"Dead Poetry" was recorded by Mickelson and mixed by Børge Finstad at Toproom Studio
The cover illustrations were painted by Kjell Åge Moland
The album is currently being mastered at Dub Studio by Endre Kirkesola
Stene comments: "After some years with no music production or dissemination
I strongly felt an inner longing to create and feel alive through music
"When Asgeir contacted me for the project GOD OF ATHEISTS
which led to a satisfying process of expressions
"I've taken the chance to believe that my words
could have any value combined with my inner tones
"The composing process of' 'Dead Poetry' was deeply founded on honesty and trust
and therefore I'm very proud to finally share VEIL OF SECRETS."
Mickelson comments: "Most people know me as a drummer
but I started originally out as a guitarist
I quickly started writing doom metal riffs
which are the CANDLEMASS classics 'Epicus Doomicus Metallicus' and 'Nightfall'
so that style is my starting point when it comes to writing slow-paced metal — meaning guitar-driven songs with melancholic and somber melodies
I wrote riffs on and (a lot more) off without a real plan
so when Vibeke expressed interest in the songs
it made sense to use them as the basis for a new band
and made some final adjustments before Vibeke breathed new life into them
Then Sareeta lifted the songs even further with her violin melodies
It's not become symphonic — it's still pure doom metal — and I cannot wait to let you finally hear it!"
