As planting season ramps up, nutrient efficiency is top of mind. Tessenderlo Kerley is stepping up with expanded operations in Ohio and innovative sulfur-based fertilizers that protect nitrogen investments.
In this interview, Ohio Ag Net’s Joel Penhorwood chats with Dr. Zach Ogles, manager of agronomy, about their new production facility in Defiance, how sulfur plays a key role in crop nutrition, and how their products help reduce nitrogen loss—boosting both yields and profitability.

confirming his potential as a top time trial prospect at WorldTour level in the race against the clock in Tessenderlo
The 21-year-old Belgian took the lead with a blistering average speed of 54.4kph and the only time under 17 minutes from ITT specialist Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-EasyPost)
who set the early benchmark time of 17:09 as only the 18th rider of the start ramp
Segaert punched the air after setting a time of 16:59 and did the same in the hot seat when Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) crossed the line seven seconds slower than him to take second ahead of Bissegger and former time trial world champion Tobias Foss (Ineos Grenadiers)
Race leader Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) tried his best to hold onto his 10-second race lead but what was a six-second deficit to the Belgian Segaert at the first time check quickly grew to a 24-second deficit at the second intermediate point
Milan eventually crossed the line 43 seconds behind the two-time under 23 European ITT champion
also ceding the race leader's jersey to him heading into the final three stages
If you see who's on the start here and see the top 10 here
it's unbelievable," said Segaert who took only his second professional victory and first at WorldTour level on stage 2
There's nothing I could have done better and right away I knew I was doing well
I kept focus and this outcome is fantastic."
Segaert now holds a 12-second lead over Foss and 16 seconds on Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates) heading into stage 3 which runs over 185.5km from Blankenberge to Ardooie
Action on stage 2 of the Renewi Tour started even before Alex Edmondson (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) rolled down the start ramp first in Tessenderlo
with time trial specialist and likely pre-stage favourite Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) pulling out of the race due to fatigue
the first big benchmark of the day was set by Swiss TT specialist Bissegger
who stormed to the line in a time of 17:09
knocking Julien Vermote (Visma-Lease a Bike) out of the hot seat by exactly a minute
Other strong time trial riders Josef Černý (Soudal-QuickStep) and Ryan Mullen (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) set respectable times with speeds averaging more than 52kph
they were still 28 and 30 seconds down on Bissegger's time at the finish
Polish national champion in the discipline
Filip Maciejuk (Red Bull-BORA-Hansgrohe) went second fastest with an impressive 17:25
holding a near-16-second gap to the Swiss rider throughout the 15.4km course
The first big threat to Bissegger came in the form of former World Champion Tobias Foss (Ineos Grenadiers)
despite being seven seconds down on the Swiss rider at the first immediate time check
managed to close this gap down to below a second at the second and third time checks
with the Norwegian stopping the clock eight-tenths of a second slower than Bissegger and missing out on a chance at his first time trial victory since Wollongong in 2022
Top young time trial prospect Segart then went into the lead ahead of Bissegger at the first time check by a narrow 1.5 seconds
besting the Swiss rider by 10 seconds at the line in Tessenderlo with the first time under 17 minutes
With most of the specialists already finished and beaten
Segaert's key challenger remaining was Sheffield
the young American couldn't get closer than four seconds down on the Belgian's time
eventually crossing the line seven seconds slower for second
The win looked certain for Segaert but Milan still had to go in the race leader's jersey
with his track prowess giving him hope against the clock
this effort was just too long for the powerful sprinter
losing 37 seconds to the stage winner from the first time check to the finish
Segaert takes the lead of the race with three stages left to race
with the top 20 all within 20 seconds of his lead
he and Lotto Dstny will have their work cut out to defend the jersey all the way to the race's conclusion in Geraardsbergen on Sunday

CategoriesCategoriesEnglishGENERAL, ECONOMYTessenderlo and Picanol to merge into single industrial group7 September 2022
Chemical company Tessenderlo Group and loom manufacturer Picanol Group are set to merge into one company
Tessenderlo launched an exchange offer for Picanol in July
A first attempt to bring together both companies controlled by entrepreneur Luc Tack dates back to the end of 2015
reference shareholders Luc Tack and Patrick Steverlynck will contribute their shares in Picanol Group through a voluntary public exchange offer by Tessenderlo Group
The other Picanol shareholders - there is a free float of 10.66% - were given the opportunity to become direct shareholders of Tessenderlo at the same exchange ratio of 1 Picanol Group share per 2.43 Tessenderlo shares
Wednesday morning it was announced that this exchange rate would be adjusted to 2.36 shares of Tessenderlo Group for 1 share of Picanol Group
The valuations of both companies were revised in light of the published half-yearly reports and an analysis of the long-term outlook based on the most recent market developments
The intervention should make the group structure of both Belgian companies simpler and more transparent
with the intention of combining them into one industrial group with one stock exchange listing and one board of directors in the long term
the merger is expected to take place by January 1

EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. -- More than five months after plans for a $20 million fertilizer plant in rural East Dubuque were announced, a firm timetable for the project has not been established.
But that hasn't dampened the excitement of local economic development officials over the potential impact.
"This is definitely one of the largest projects we've had in recent memory," said Lisa McCarthy, executive director of the Tri-County Economic Development Alliance. "This is a great opportunity for residents in the area."
Rentech Nitrogen Partners and Tessenderlo Kerley Inc. announced a long-term agreement in October, through which Rentech would supply TKI with ammonia produced at its facility near East Dubuque. As part of this project, TKI plans to construct a new fertilizer plant adjacent to Rentech's facility.
Tessenderlo Kerley committed to create 16 jobs at the new facility, a figure mandated through an economic development agreement with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Opportunity. In addition, TKI officials estimate as many as 60 contractors will be hired during construction of the plant.
Precisely when the project will begin remains a mystery, however.
McCarthy said TKI had initially planned on beginning construction in June, but she is unsure if that is still the company's goal.
In an email statement to TH Media, TKI officials did not commit to a specific timetable.
"Construction will begin immediately upon receiving approval of necessary permits," the email said.
Jo Daviess County Zoning Administrator Linda Delvaux said TKI has been in close contact with the county but has not submitted a permit application.
"A project of this magnitude is time-consuming, and all wheels have to turn at the same time," Delvaux said.
Illinois Environmental Protection Agency spokeswoman Kim Biggs said TKI has been in discussions with the agency but no permit application has been submitted.
Julie Cafarella, vice president of investor relations and communications for Rentech, did not return calls and emails from TH Media for comment on this story.
In February, Rentech announced the initiation of a process to "explore and evaluate potential strategic alternatives" for its future. A Rentech spokesperson said at the time that the outcome of this process could include sale of the partnership or merger with another party.
TKI declined comment on whether Rentech's announcement has affected plans for the new fertilizer facility, stating that it "does not disclose proprietary information."
East Dubuque City Manager Geoff Barklow said the new facility would not directly benefit the city's tax base, but he emphasized the entire region would see economic benefits from the development.
"The indirect economic impact it will have for the community will be tremendous," Barklow said. "I wish there were more things like this happening."

CategoriesCategoriesEnglishPOLITICS, CLIMATENuclear exit: Only one candidate left to build gas-fired power plant22 September 2023
Eneco is no longer a candidate to invest in a large gas-fired power plant outside Charleroi
The withdrawal of the Dutch company leaves only Tessenderlo Chemie to provide the necessary gas plant
Although the permitting process for a gas-fired power plant at Manage in Hainaut is ongoing
Eneco is no longer a candidate to build it
The plan is no longer compatible with the company's ambition to supply only carbon-neutral electricity to its customers by 2035
The Dutch producer and supplier of natural gas
electricity and heat wants to focus on renewable energy or flexible solutions with green hydrogen or battery farms on site
The decision could significantly impact how Belgium's electricity supply will look. Last summer, the federal government agreed with French energy group Engie to keep the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 nuclear power plants open for another 10 years after 2025
But this 2 gigawatts of nuclear capacity will not be enough to meet Belgium's energy needs
Experts believe another sizeable gas-fired power station will be needed in addition to the two gas-fired power stations that energy suppliers Engie and Luminus are building near Liège
Nine projects were ready to replace nuclear power three years ago
The chemical company wants to build a 900-megawatt gas-fired power station
As Tessenderlo Chemie is the only one left
"If it is almost certain that it is the only one that wants to build a gas power plant and that this capacity is needed
then it can raise its price," said Bram Claeys
which says that fossil gas power plants are not compatible with Europe's climate trajectory after 2035
you are at the mercy of the supplier's goodwill
We will then pay the price for inadequately preparing for the nuclear phase-out," Claeys said

A Belgian trade union says 35 lorry drivers from Bulgaria have been left stranded after their vehicles were all seized during an inspection conducted by the police and public prosecutor's office. The BTB-ABVV union writes that all of the drivers were working for Kumas Trans
who have a base in the Belgian town of Tessenderlo
According to a press release from the union
the seizure the vehicles was undertaken following a full day of “interrogations”
BTB-ABVV said it had learned about the case after being contacted on Sunday afternoon by some of the aforementioned 35 drivers
One driver reportedly explained of how the inspection services and police had raided Kumas Trans’ Tessenderlo base
Although the lorry drivers have been placed in a nearby hotel
they are at their wits’ end according to BTB-ABVV chairman Frank Moreels
who revealed the truckers have no cash nor transport to return home:
“All the drivers who were taking their weekend rest in Tessenderlo are stranded
Their trucks were impounded and they can no longer operate
They are at their wits’ end because they have no money or vehicle to work or return to Bulgaria
They will be given the opportunity to remove their personal belongings from their vehicle on Monday.”
All the drivers who spoke to the trade union are said to have told the same story – they came to Belgium in their Bulgarian truck or their own car
They worked on Bulgarian work contracts despite their employer being more active in Belgium and having only one registered address in Bulgaria
The authorities determined that the drivers were entitled to Belgian wages and working conditions given that they were almost exclusively working in the country
In addition to the drivers being paid according to Bulgarian wage standards and labour conditions
all of the drivers had not received their wages for two months
exploitation and fraud in which drivers are exploited by a rogue Belgian employer who is fiercely competing with genuine fellow-road-transport firms by dumping rates
These are rates that can only be offered because of the organisation of this social dumping and fraud,” writes the BTB-ABVV
The union now says it will assist the stranded drivers by either trying to them find a job in Belgium
or helping them to return to their homeland
Frank Moreels also confirmed that it shall refer the matter to the European Labor Auditor (ELA)
who can ensure that the Bulgarian inspection services can make claims against the company in Bulgaria
The case appears to be rather similar to the one we reported last week
whereby cooperation between the Bulgarian and Dutch authorities saw a rogue haulage association taken down
